The filter paper (FP) method, a cost-effective, versatile, and convenient approach, has found extensive application in analyzing fine-grained soils, enabling the successful measurement of a broad spectrum of total and matric suctions. However, using the FP method in sand with a limited range of suction profiles has been notably underrepresented in the existing literature. Therefore, this study investigated the applicability of the contact FP method in establishing soil water retention curves (SWRCs) using five distinct FP calibration curves for 10 poorly graded sands. Among these calibration curves, the one presented by Chandler yielded the highest suction values, which were followed by those of ASTM. Furthermore, the FP results were subjected to fitting with a mathmatical model, which led to the observation that the overall trends in the obtained SWRCs displayed smooth sigmoidal shapes, resulting in a complete and coherent SWRCs. The SWRC results of five sand samples were assessed through validation against the hanging column technique (HCT) results, indicating a high degree of concordance and affirming the suitability of the FP method for sands characterized by a limited suction profile. Notably, the entire range of suction values fell within the 0.01–20 kPa range based on the calibration curves presented by Chandler and ASTM for all the examined sand samples, except sands 9 and 10. Furthermore, the suction values were unobtainable using the two aforementioned calibration curves within the ranges of 0.01–1.47 kPa and 0.01–0.172 kPa. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Mulch has been considered effective for saving water and promoting plant growth. However, little has been investigated about the effect of mulch from recycled shredded paper under different soil moisture conditions on spinach growth. A pot-grown Komatsuna spinach experiment with a factorial design was conducted under two main conditions, with and without shredded paper mulch. Each of these conditions was treated with three different soil moisture levels (SWC) 20%, 25%, and 30%. The smallest evapotranspiration amount was in the mulch-only, no-plant treatment with SWC 20% (92.88 mm), and the largest was in the plant-only, no-mulch treatment (226.19 mm). All biomass yield attributions were negatively influenced by increasing the frequency of irrigation and SWC levels. SWC 20% with shredded mulch resulted in the largest dry matter, although it was statistically non-significant. But it resulted in taller plant heights and a larger leaf area index (LAI) compared to soil with no shredded mulch (p < 0.05). For SWC 25% and 30% treatments, Komatsuna spinach with no shredded mulch resulted in slightly superior plant dry matter and plant height, compared to mulched plants. These results suggest that SWC 20% with shredded paper mulch has the highest potential for saving water among all treatments for growing spinach under limited water availability. There is an increasing need for accessible methods to monitor soil health. Our primary objective was to evaluate an accessible, do-it-yourself method for measuring the maximum water holding capacity – we call this the funnel, filter paper, and drainage (MWHCFFPD) method. First, we compared MWHCFFPD to the water desorption method via pressure cells (WHCPC), routinely used for generating soil water retention curves, using 10 soils from a wide range of textures (4–55% clay). Second, we tested the sensitivity of the MWHCFFPD to methodological variations likely encountered by citizen scientists. The two methods were quite comparable in precision, with mean coefficient of variances of 3.5% and 4.4% for the FFPD and water desorption method, respectively. The MWHCFFPD and WHCPC methods were comparable, with MWHCFFPD best correlating to WHCPC at −2.45 kPa (R2 = 0.98). The MWHCFFPD method is somewhat sensitive to some methodological modifications, most notably variation in water source, but with standardized protocols could be scientifically robust. Overall, MWHCFFPD can be used as a simple and affordable test of sieved soil structure and organic matter, and thus has potential to expand soil health monitoring. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

To investigate the soil hydraulic characteristics across a wide range of suctions (0-10 MPa) of Benggang soil, the soil water holding capacities of different soil layers in Benggang was determined using the pressure film meter and the filter paper methods. Traditional and modified Van Genuchten-Mualem (VG) models were used to fit the soil moisture characteristics curves. The results showed that the water-holding curves determined by the pressure film meter and filter paper methods intersected and tended to overlap. This observation suggested combining the two measurement methods to obtain soil moisture characteristic curves over a wide suction range. Further, within the wide suction range, the water-holding capacity of the sandy soil layer was higher than that of the red and detritus soil layers in the low suction stage (h<0.1 MPa). However, in the high suction stage (h>0.1 MPa), the red soil layer had the highest water-holding capacity. Both the traditional and modified VG models were able to fit the soil moisture characteristics of each soil layer of the Benggang wall with a root mean square error of less than 0.021 5. The Nash efficiency and correlation coefficients were greater than 0.926 6 and 0.899 1, respectively. Noticeably, the modified VG model was more suitable for describing the soil moisture characteristic curves of the Benggang wall across a wide suction range. The residual values of the soil moisture characteristic curves for the red, sandy, and detritus layers were 378 kPa (corresponding to a water content of 18.82%), 173 kPa (corresponding to a water content of 18.95%), and 92 kPa (corresponding to a water content of 18.41%), respectively. Finally, the form of the segmental function (with the residual value as the inflection point) was more suitable for describing the unsaturated hydraulic conductivity over a wide suction range of Benggang soils than the conventional VG model. Sources of pulping red liquor, which is produced by acidic sulfite cooking in paper industry, consisted of lignosulphonate and polysaccharide, commonly considered as waste or byproducts and used in low value, such as surfactant and adhesive are wide and its price is low. Here a novel method for high value-added utilization of the pulp and paper industry waste for fabricating super-swelling biopolymer hydrogels is introduced. In contrast to other costly utilizations, which are needed to separate red liquor or purify hemicellulose and lignin before using, it is first time to directly utilize red liquor to prepare hydrogels without pretreatment. FT-IR, SEM, TGA and XRD are used to determine structure and morphology of hydrogels. It is excited the hydrogels fabricated from acrylic (AA) and industry waste exhibit super-swelling and slow release behaviors in water. Numerous recent studies have argued that moisture limitation is leading to growth declines and mortality of black spruce (Picea mariana) and white spruce (Picea glauca) in the North American boreal forest. A parallel line of research suggests that increasingly common severe wildfires are altering successional pathways and leading to long‐term replacement of spruce forests with those dominated by paper birch (Betula papyrifera, Betula neoalaskana) and trembling aspen (Populus tremuloides). When both conifers and deciduous trees establish after fire, this biome shift hypothesis implicitly assumes that deciduous species will outcompete the conifers, owing to their more rapid vertical growth and because they might be less sensitive to warm and dry conditions.We established a research site in a white spruce‐paper birch forest on an east‐facing slope in interior Alaska and tested the hypothesis that Alaska paper birch are better adapted to warm and dry conditions than white spruce. Over 6 years (2013–2018), we made hourly measurements of microclimate and xylem sap flux of both species. We also collected increment cores and conducted climate‐growth analyses for both species.During our 6‐year study, growing seasons with low volumetric soil water content (SWC) were those that followed shallow winter snowpacks and had limited summer rainfall, not necessarily those with warm air temperature. Both species were sensitive to moisture limitation. The tree‐ring data revealed significant positive effects of cumulative water year precipitation on radial growth, with a steeper slope for paper birch than for white spruce. Radial growth of both species was also positively related to mean water year air temperature. Sap flux density declined progressively for white spruce over the range of observed SWC and abruptly for paper birch when SWC fell below ~15%.Synthesis. Our results show that, while paper birch might be less sensitive to mild drought than white spruce, it may be more sensitive to severe drought, raising questions about the ability of paper birch to outcompete co‐occurring white spruce in a drier climate. A variety of routine methods are available for the detection of silver (I) (Ag+) ions, but most of them rely on expensive, sophisticated and desktop instruments. Herein, a low-cost, instrument-free and portable Ag+ biosensor was described by initially designing a new class of 3D origami microfluidic paper-based analytical devices (μPADs) into each of which one piece of reagent-loaded nanoporous membrane was integrated. It combines analyte-triggered self-growing of silver nanoparticles to block the membrane's pores in situ for rapid yet efficient signal amplification with a handheld personal glucose meter for a portable and sensitive quantitative readout based on the biocatalytic reactions between the glucose oxidase and glucose. Its utility is well demonstrated with the specific detection of the analyte with a limit of detection as low as ∼58.1 pM (3σ), which makes this new biosensing method one of the most sensitive Ag+ assays in comparison with many other typical methods recently reported. As the slip zone is the weak zone in the landslide, it is the key part to control the stability of the landslide. The study on the change of unsaturated mechanical properties of the sliding zone soil during the drying-wetting cycle is of great significance to understand the change of shear strength of the sliding zone soil with periodic fluctuation of reservoir water and the resulting landslide deformation and even instability process. The sliding zone soil of a talus landslide in Three Gorges reservoir area was used as the research target. Through the simulation of 0-5 drying-wetting cycles, the direct shear and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) tests were carried out on the remolded samples of the sliding zone soil, and the matric suction of the samples after shear was measured by filter paper method. Further, the variation characteristics of pore structure, matric suction, soil water characteristic curve (SWCC) and shear strength of unsaturated sliding zone soil during drying-wetting cycle were analyzed, and the prediction model of unsaturated shear strength under drying-wetting cycle was established based on the test results. The results show that the connection between particles in the soil is constantly damaged and destroyed by the drying-wetting cycle, causing the continuous development and expansion of small pores in the sample to evolve into large pores, and the overall porosity increases because the number of pores in the soil increases; meanwhile, the air intake value and the residual water content of soil gradually decreases with the increase of drying-wetting cycles, which means that the water is easier to penetrate and overflow into the soil pores, and the water holding capacity of soil gradually decreases; besides, the degradation of shear strength of slip zone soil is very obvious under drying-wetting cycle; the cohesion and internal friction angle of slip zone soil decrease gradually with the number of drying-wetting cycles, and the degree of weakening of the cohesion by drying-wetting cycle is greater than that of internal friction angle. Finally, the prediction model of unsaturated shear strength of slip zone soil based on direct shear test and matric suction measurement by filter paper method provides a useful reference for the prediction of shear strength of slip zone soil under drying-wetting cycle. Plastic mulch films are often used in agriculture to conserve soil moisture. Most of the plastic mulch currently used worldwide is made of non-biodegradable polyethylene, which has to be removed and disposed after harvest, incurring significant environmental costs. Biodegradable paper or plastic mulch could offer a valuable alternative to polyethylene. The objective of this study was to compare the effects of biodegradable mulches and standard polyethylene mulch on soil moisture dynamics during a growing season. A field experiment was carried out with pumpkin ( Cucurbita pepo ), which were irrigated and grown on raised beds covered with the following mulch treatments: no mulch, biodegradable paper, biodegradable plastic, and polyethylene. Soil moisture was measured at 10- and 20-cm depths. A numerical model (HYDRUS-2D) was used to simulate the moisture dynamics under the different mulch treatments, each represented by different boundary conditions at the soil surface. Polyethylene mulch, which created an impermeable surface layer, effectively reduced evaporation and maintained highest water content among the treatments. Biodegradable paper mulch, which was partially permeable to evaporation and rainfall throughout the growing season, resulted in soil moisture that was intermediate between that obtained for no mulch and polyethylene. Biodegradable plastic mulch, which was similar to that of polyethylene mulch initially in terms of effects on soil moisture, disintegrated during the growing season and allowed rainfall to penetrate and water to evaporate from the soil surface. Abstract Plastic film (PF) is a common soil mulching material used worldwide in crop production. In recent years there is an increasing demand for reducing the use of PF because of potential environmental- and ecological-risks. Although biodegradable paper (BP) and bio-based film (BB) have been used as alternatives to PF, little information is available regarding their efficiency in summer crop production, which is often restricted by the combination of heat stress and drought stress. To meet this need, PF (silver-gray plastic film made from polyethylene), BP (biodegradable paper made from plant straw) and BB (bio-based film made from plant straw combined with decomposed coal) were used as soil mulching materials to investigate their influence on soil properties (temperature, moisture, pH, electricity conductivity (EC), nutrients and enzymes), plant growth (root morphology, the relative growth rate (RGR), plant biomass and the root/shoot ratio), fruit yield and fruit quality. The un-mulched soil served as control. The trial was conducted in a five-year-old commercial greenhouse located in Helan county, Ningxia, China, with the mean air temperatures of about 32 °C and 31 °C during the summer season in 2016 and 2017, respectively. In general, although PF mulching increased soil moisture, it increased soil temperature, pH and EC and decreased available P, resulting in the reduction of plant growth (root length and diameter, the RGRs of plant height and leaf area, and shoot and root biomass) and fruit yield. The BB mulching decreased soil temperature, however, it decreased soil moisture and invertase and increased soil EC, leading to reduced root growth (root diameter and biomass, and the root/shoot ratio). The BP mulching not only decreased soil temperature, but also increased soil moisture. As a result, it showed several advantages such as decreasing soil EC, increasing soil enzyme activities, improving plant growth (root length, the RGRs of plant height and leaf area, plant biomass and the root/shoot ratio) and increasing fruit yield. Moreover, the fruit quality was partly improved by BP mulching due to reduced nitrate but increased vitamin C. The two most important abiotic plant stressors that impact plant development and crop yields are water stress and salinity stress. These issues are particularly important in arid and semi‐arid regions. According to a 2019 research paper, “thirty crop species provide 90% of our food, most of which display severe yield losses under moderate salinity.” Moderate salinity is defined as extracted pore‐water salinity in the range of 4–8 dS m−1. Currently, commercially available soil moisture and bulk soil electrical conductivity sensors can estimate in situ soil pore‐water electrical conductivity with suitably calibrated soil moisture and electrical conductivity models for a wide range of soil types and growing media. With knowledge of the pore‐water electrical conductivity it is possible to estimate osmotic tension. Furthermore, there are commercially available dielectric tensiometers that provide soil water tension measurements from the water content of a porous matrix component that is in equilibrium with the water capillary forces in the surrounding soil or growing media. Combining soil moisture and soil water tension measurements enables water retention curves and the hydraulic properties of a soil to be determined. However, the overall ability of a plant to extract water from a soil or substrate is typically dominated by water tension and osmotic tension. Currently, while the technology blocks exist in different commercial offerings, the combination of a water tension and osmotic tension in an integrated sensor does not exist. A key benefit of the porous matrix in a dielectric tensiometer is that electrical measurements include a component of extracted water from the soil or growing media. With the appropriate dielectric characterization of the porous matrix, there should be no need for soil‐specific calibrations. This paper presents a new analytical solution to predict the ultimate depth and holding capacity of plate anchors based on an integrated analysis of the anchor and mooring system. The configuration equations of the mooring line, both in soil and water, have been solved to obtain the complete line profile. A key advancement is that the mooring line angle at mudline varies compatibly with the whole anchor–mooring system. This is different from the solutions available in literature that neglect the mooring line segment in water and only assume a constant mooring line angle at the mudline. The system of equations is solved by using an iteration scheme, and parametric studies are demonstrated. The effects of line length, water depth, and seabed strength profile are explored by demonstrating the performance of a commercial plate anchor. It is found that neglecting the mooring line in water can significantly overestimate the ultimate embedment and capacity, especially when the mooring line length is relatively short. Soil moisture (SM) is a key variable driving hydrologic, climatic, and ecological processes. Although it is highly variable, both spatially and temporally, there is limited data availability to inform about SM conditions at adequate spatial and temporal scales over large regions. Satellite SM retrievals, especially L-band microwave remote sensing, has emerged as a feasible solution to offer spatially continuous global-scale SM information. However, the coarse spatial resolution of these L-band microwave SM retrievals poses uncertainties in many regional- and local-scale SM applications which require a high amount of spatial details. Numerous studies have been conducted to develop downscaling algorithms to enhance the spatial resolution of coarse-resolution satellite-derived SM datasets. Machine Learning (ML)-based downscaling models have gained prominence recently due to their ability to capture non-linear, complex relationships between SM and its driving factors, such as vegetation, surface temperature, topography, and climatic conditions. This review paper presents a comprehensive review of the ML-based approaches used in SM downscaling. The usage of classical, ensemble, neural nets, and deep learning methods to downscale SM products and the comparison of multiple algorithms are detailed in this paper. Insights into the significance of surface ancillary variables for model accuracy and the improvements made to ML-based SM downscaling approaches are also discussed. The main objective of this paper is to reduce the dimensionality of unknown coefficient vectors of finite-element (FE) solutions in two-grid (CN) FE (TGCNFE) format for the nonlinear unsaturated soil water flow problem by using a proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) and to design a new reduced-dimension iteration TGCNFE (RDITGCNFE). For this objective, a new time semi-discrete CN (TSDCN) scheme for the nonlinear unsaturated soil water flow problem is first designed and the existence, stability, and error estimates of TSDCN solutions are demonstrated. Subsequently, a new TGCNFE format for the nonlinear unsaturated soil water flow problem is designed and the existence, unconditional stability, and error estimates of TGCNFE solutions are demonstrated. Next, a new RDITGCNFE format with the same FE basis functions as the TGCNFE format is built by the POD method and the existence, unconditional stability, and error estimates of RDITGCNFE solutions are discussed. Ultimately, the rightness of theory results and the superiority of the RDITGCNFE format are verified by two sets of numerical tests. It is worth noting that the RDITGCNFE format differs completely from all previous reduced-dimension methods, including the authors' previous works. Therefore, the study of this paper can not only provide a new theoretical method for the dimensionality reduction of numerical models for nonlinear problems but also provide an algorithm implementation technology for the numerical simulation of practical engineering problems. Petroleum contamination is considered as a major risk to the health of humans and environment. Biochars as low-cost and eco-friendly carbon materials, have been widely used for the removal of petroleum hydrocarbon in the environment. The purpose of this paper is to review the performance, mechanisms, and potential environmental toxicity of biochar, modified biochar and its integration use with other materials in petroleum contaminated soil and water. Specifically, the use of biochar in oil-contaminated water and soil as well as the factors that could influence the removal ability of biochar were systematically evaluated. In addition, the modification and integrated use of biochar for improving the removal efficiency were summarized from the aspects of sorption, biodegradation, chemical degradation, and reusability. Moreover, the functional impacts and associated ecotoxicity of pristine and modified biochars in various environments were demonstrated. Finally, some shortcoming of current approaches, and future research needs were provided for the future direction and challenges of modified biochar research. A biodegradable mulch paper (BMP) was made from pea starch and brown kraft paper. Brown kraft paper (KP) was brushed with pregelatinized starch solution on one side evenly at 0.095 kg starch solution per square meter and dried at room temperature for 48-72 h. The BMP, uncoated KP, and commercial plastic weed barrier (WB) had similar thicknesses, from 0.15 to 0.22 mm. However, the tensile strength (TS) of KP was much higher than BMP and WB, whereas the tensile strengths of BMP and WB were similar. The KP had the highest values in elastic modulus (EM), indicating brittleness and rigidity. The WB had the lowest elastic modulus value. Water vapor permeability (WVP) of BMP was lower than that of KP, resulting in 4.57 and 10.28 g mm kPa-1h-1m-2, respectively. Both the BMP and KP could keep the soil more humid than the WB did. Soil temperature under BMP and KP was lower than those of WB and bare soil. The field experiment results also showed that BMP and KP prevented the growth of weeds. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Soil moisture monitoring is a research hotspot in the application of navigation satellite reflected signals. In order to retrieve soil moisture in any period with high precision and solve the problem that soil moisture cannot be retrieved when satellite observation data is partially missing, the principle of generalized extension in engineering science is applied to GNSS-IR technology in the paper. Firstly, the generalized extension approximation method is used to interpolate the precise ephemeris to obtain the altitude angle information of each satellite in each epoch. Then, the generalized extended interpolation and extrapolation models were used to supplement the initial phase of the reflected signal corresponding to the missing data as the input of the inversion model to predict soil moisture. The soil moisture inversion experiment was completed according to the observation data provided by PBO. The results show that the generalized extension method can cope with the missing data of different lengths and distributions in GNSS-IR soil moisture retrieval, When the data were confirmed for 15 days, the correlation coefficient of inversion results was 0.916, RSME was 0.03358 cm3/cm3, and MAE was 0.02912 cm3/cm3, and the correlation coefficient of more than 0.85 can be maintained when the amount of missing data reaches 60 % of the test set. This paper presents an integrated simulation of future hydrological droughts using different climate scenarios for the Piancó River basin. Streamflow and sediment yield are estimated using the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) model, and hydrological droughts are calculated using the Streamflow Drought Index (SDI). The study incorporates two future climate scenarios: RCP 4.5 (optimistic) and RCP 8.5 (pessimistic). The SDI is determined based on a series of simulated future flows to identify drought events within the basin. The results show that the model calibration and validation demonstrated excellent agreement with observed data (R² = 0.83, NSE = 0.82 for calibration and R² = 0.89, NSE = 0.77 for validation). When comparing the scenarios, reductions in flow volume by −75.86% and sediment yield by −86.5% are noted, indicating a significant decrease in sediment contribution to the outlet. Interestingly, the most critical years related to drought events, as determined by the SDI, do not coincide across the pessimistic and optimistic scenarios. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Freeze-thaw effects can significantly alter the volume of expansive soil due to the water-phase change and soil expansion. The montmorillonite content was an important factor influencing the expansibility of expansive soil. This paper investigated the micropore structure characteristics of expansive soil under freeze-thaw cycles with various montmorillonite contents. In addition, the micropore evolution of expansive soils and relationship between the unfrozen water content and temperature were also examined via X-ray diffraction (XRD) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). The results indicated that: (1) the montmorillonite content affected the pore size distribution of expansive soil, and with increasing montmorillonite content, the relaxation time (T2) distribution curves changed from single-peak into double-peaks; (2) after multiple freeze-thaw cycles, the macropores in expansive soil increased and mesopore pores decreased; (3) considering the freezing point and capillary adsorption, the soil freezing characteristic curve (SFCC) could be divided into four stages, namely, unfrozen water, free water, freezing-capillary water, freezing-hydroscopic water; (4) the montmorillonite content only affected the unfrozen water content from 0°C to −5°C, while at temperatures lower than −5°C, the effect of the montmorillonite content on the unfrozen water content was negligible. Soil moisture data with both a fine spatial scale and a short global repeat period would benefit many hydrologic and climatic applications. Since the radar transmitter malfunctioned on NASA's Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP) in 2015, SMAP soil moisture has been downscaled using numerous alternative fine-resolution data. In this paper, we describe the creation and validation of a new downscaled 3 km soil moisture dataset, which is the culmination of previous work. We downscaled SMAP enhanced 9 km brightness temperatures by merging them with L-band Cyclone Global Navigation Satellite System (CYGNSS) reflectivity data, using a modified version of the SMAP active–passive brightness temperature algorithm. We then calculated 3 km SMAP/CYGNSS soil moisture using the resulting 3 km SMAP/CYGNSS brightness temperatures and the SMAP single-channel vertically polarized soil moisture algorithm (SCA-V). To remedy the sparse daily coverage of CYGNSS data at a 3 km spatial resolution, we used spatially interpolated CYGNSS data to downscale SMAP soil moisture. 3 km interpolated SMAP/CYGNSS soil moisture matches the SMAP repeat period of ~2–3 days, providing a soil moisture dataset with both a fine spatial scale and a short repeat period. 3 km interpolated SMAP/CYGNSS soil moisture, upscaled to 9 km, has an average correlation of 0.82 and an average unbiased root mean square difference (ubRMSD) of 0.035 cm3/cm3 using all SMAP 9 km core validation sites (CVSs) within ±38° latitude. The observed (not interpolated) SMAP/CYGNSS soil moisture did not perform as well at the SMAP 9 km CVSs, with an average correlation of 0.68 and an average ubRMSD of 0.048 cm3/cm3. A sensitivity analysis shows that CYGNSS reflectivity is likely responsible for most of the uncertainty in downscaled SMAP/CYGNSS soil moisture. The success of 3 km SMAP/CYGNSS soil moisture demonstrates that Global Navigation Satellite System–Reflectometry (GNSS-R) observations are effective for downscaling soil moisture. This paper addresses the challenge of testing the hypothesis of what the authors call a nested block circular‐compound symmetric (NBCCS) covariance structure for the population covariance matrix. This is a covariance structure which has an outer block compound symmetric structure, where the diagonal blocks are themselves block circular matrices, while the off‐diagonal blocks are formed by all equal matrices. The NBCCS null hypothesis is decomposed into sub‐hypotheses, allowing this way for a simpler way to obtain a likelihood ratio test and its associated statistic. The exact moments of this statistic are derived, and its distribution is carefully examined. Given the complicated nature of this distribution, highly precise near‐exact distributions were developed. Numerical studies are conducted to assess the proximity between these near‐exact distributions and the exact distribution, highlighting the performance of these approximations, even in the case of very small sample sizes. This review, systematically examines 92 papers, focusing on progress in satellite solutions over time, and (pre)processing improvements of spatio-temporal and spectral resolution. The importance of the integration of satellites with ground truth data is highlighted. The results provide precise on-field adaptation strategies through the generation of prescription maps and variable rate application. This enhances sustainability and efficiency in vineyard management and reduces the environmental footprint of vineyard techniques. The effectiveness of different vegetation indices in capturing spatial and temporal variations in vine health, water content, chlorophyll levels, and overall vigor is discussed. Anchor reinforced vegetation system (ARVS) comprises high performance turf reinforcement mats (HPTRM), vegetation and anchors. It is a new attempt to apply the system in expansive soil slope protection. The goal of this paper was to evaluate the effectiveness of ARVS in protecting newly excavated expansive soil slopes. The field tests on the bare slope, grassed slope and ARVS protective slope were carried out, including natural and artificial rainfall. During the test, the soil water content, soil deformation, and anchor axial force were monitored, and then the slope protection mechanism of ARVS was analyzed. It was found that ARVS can effectively protect expansive soil slopes compared with bare slopes and grassed slopes. The vegetation and HPTRM form a reinforced turf, and the anchors fix it to the slope surface, thus restraining the expansion deformation. The axial force on the anchor of ARVS includes frictional resistance and tensile force transmitted by HPTRM, which is maximum at the early stage of support. The soil–anchor interface mechanical behavior is of practical importance for the bearing performance of ground anchors. Element-scale pullout test is a simple, reliable, and economical technique to investigate the interface shear stress–displacement response of anchors. However, the influence range of boundary effect for the anchoring element-scale pullout specimens is poorly understood, particularly under the actual stress and construction conditions. In addition, there is still a lack of study on the mechanical behavior of soil–anchor interface subjected to ground pressure via element-scale pullout test. In this paper, an element-scale pullout test setup that can simulate ground pressure and construction method of ground anchors was specially developed, with details introduced carefully. A response surface function-based soil dry density prediction model was proposed for the test design. Comparison with the soil consolidation test results indicates that this model equipped with high fitting and prediction accuracy. Twenty groups of element-scale pullout tests with different ground pressures and anchor diameters were conducted. Based on the test design of the proposed model, the soil density and moisture content were almost the same for all specimens after consolidation. The shrinkage of anchor hole, interface shear stress–displacement response, and interface shear strength were discussed adequately. It is shown that the soil–anchor interface shear strength is hardly dependent on ground pressure under the actual construction method of anchors. Unsaturated soils with bimodal pore structures, such as many residual and colluvial soils, are widespread in nature. Bimodal pore structures can noticeably influence their soil–water retention behaviour. Estimating the bimodal soil–water retention curve (SWRC) accurately has become critical in both theoretical research and engineering practice. In this paper, a novel equation to simulate the bimodal SWRC of unsaturated soils is proposed. The proposed bimodal SWRC equation not only provides higher simulation accuracy for bimodal SWRCs compared to other equations, but it also shows good agreement with experimental data from different types of soils. Moreover, the relationships between bimodal SWRC variables (i.e., air entry value, inflection point, and slopes at transition zone) and the best fitting parameters are presented. Finally, a practical approach is developed to estimate the bimodal relative permeability of unsaturated soils based on the proposed bimodal SWRC equation. The results are convincingly demonstrated that there is good agreement between the predicted and measured relative permeability coefficients of unsaturated soils in the literature. Accurately calculating the characteristics of impulse-dispersed currents in cross-river tower grounding devices is a fundamental work. This paper presents the dynamic model of impulse characteristics of grounding device considering the coupling of river seepage, water velocity and current dispersion. Firstly, a finite-element model is established for the flow field, taking into account the dynamic process of river seepage to surrounding soils, and which calculates the distribution of soil water saturation. Next, an electrical finite-element model is established to calculate the impulse-dispersed current process. To simulate the effects of river water seepage and soil ionization on soil parameters, a dynamic function for soil resistivity with changes in electric field strength and soil water saturation is suggested. The influence of water velocity on seepage was quantitatively simulated by Bernoulli's principle. Finally, based on the proposed method, a model for a representative tower grounding device located near a river is developed to analyze the impact of seepage and soil structure on soil resistivity, current density, and electric field strength distribution. The findings indicate that the seepage of river water into the surrounding soil significantly changes the soil's resistivity and its spatial distribution characteristics. Additionally, the dispersion current tends to dissipate in areas underneath the river, thus changing the distribution of electric field strength within the soil. The aquifuge has a significant impact on groundwater seepage. However, if the aquifuge is situated more than 90 m below the ground, its effect can be ignored. In contrast, soil structure without an aquifuge can closely approximate a vertically structured soil. In practical engineering, appropriate models should be selected based on the specific characteristics of the soil structure and water velocity to ensure the pre-work accuracy of lightning protection optimization design. Norfloxacin (NOX), a broad spectrum fluoroquinolone (FQ) antibiotic, is commonly detected in environmental residues, potentially contributing to biological drug resistance. In this paper, an aptamer recognition probe has been used to develop a label-free liquid crystal-based biosensor for simple and robust optical detection of NOX in aqueous solutions. Stimuli-receptive liquid crystals (LCs) have been employed to report aptamer–target binding events at the LC–aqueous interface. The homeotropic alignment of LCs at the aqueous–LC interface is due to the self-assembly of the cationic surfactant cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB). In the presence of the negatively charged NOX aptamer, the ordering changes to planar/tilted. On addition of NOX, the aptamer–NOX binding causes redistribution of CTAB at the LC–aqueous interface and the homeotropic orientation is restored. This results in a bright-to-dark optical transition under a polarized optical microscope (POM). This optical transition serves as a visual indicator to mark the presence of NOX. The devised aptasensor demonstrates high specificity with a minimum detection limit of 5 nM (1.596 ppb). Moreover, the application of the developed aptasensor for the detection of NOX in freshwater and soil samples underscores its practical utility in environmental monitoring. This paper presents an analysis of the relationships between soil moisture, cloud cover, solar radiation, air temperature and humidity, and precipitation during the warm half of the year in East‐Central Europe over the years 1971–2020. The temporal and spatial variability of these meteorological elements is presented in association with the occurrence of anticyclonic blocking events over the study area. It demonstrates that changes in soil moisture in East‐Central Europe point to the combined influence of many meteorological factors resulting from the atmospheric circulation, and are an indicator of the comprehensive relationships among those factors. The main factors affecting soil water content are precipitation and evapotranspiration, which in turn depend on air humidity, cloudiness, intensity of solar radiation and air temperature. The increase in the frequency and duration of sequences of days with blocking events in East‐Central Europe has contributed to an increased probability of longer periods with soil moisture negative anomalies. Interannual fluctuations in average summertime temperatures across the western United States are captured by a leading empirical orthogonal function that explains over 50% of the total observed variance. In this paper, we explain the origins of this pattern of interannual temperature variability by examining soil moisture–temperature coupling that acts across seasons in observations and climate models. We find that a characteristic pattern of coupled temperature–soil moisture climate variability accounts for 34% of the total observed variance in summertime temperature across the region. This pattern is reproduced in state-of-the-art global climate models, where experiments that eliminate soil moisture variability reduce summertime average temperature variance by a factor of 3 on average. We use an idealized model of the coupled atmospheric boundary layer and underlying land surface to demonstrate that feedbacks between soil moisture, boundary layer relative humidity, and precipitation can explain the observed relations between springtime soil moisture and summertime temperature. Our results suggest that antecedent soil moisture conditions and subsequent land–atmosphere interactions play an important role in interannual summertime temperature variability in the western United States; soil moisture variations cause distal temperature anomalies and impart predictability at time scales longer than one season. Our results indicate that 40% of the observed warming trend across the western United States since 1981 has been driven by wintertime precipitation trends in the U.S. southwest. Significance Statement: Year-to-year fluctuations in summertime temperatures have a large impact on drought, wildfire, and extreme heat across the Western United States. We find strong evidence that soil moisture deficits in the preceding spring may be the primary driver of higher-than-average summer temperatures in this region. Our results suggest that memory in the water cycle may lead to greater predictability in the climate system from season to season and that trends in southwest precipitation have exerted a considerable influence on observed warming over the past 40 years. The geotechnical tube technology has been widely used in the dewatering treatment of high-water-content slurries, such as engineering waste muds, mine water sludges, and dredging slurries. However, the existing engineering practice adopting the traditional geotextile tubes is characterized by low efficiency and difficult quality control. To address these issues, a new approach was developed by combining the geotextile tubes and vacuum preloading technology. In this method, several plastic drain boards were embedded in a geotextile tube as prefabricated horizontal drains (PHDs), and a vacuum was applied to promote drainage. The effectiveness of the proposed method was verified by a comparison test. A two-dimensional plane-strain analytical consolidation problem with a distributed drainage boundary was then formulated and solved to predict the consolidation process of soil in a vacuum preloaded geotextile tube. The analytical solution was validated against the results of a pilot field test, and then the influence of PHD spacing on the consolidation process was also discussed. Compared to the traditional geotextile tubes, the approach proposed in this paper promises good applicability and can effectively shorten the treatment time by 73.3% and reduce the water content of treated soils by 51.9%. Flash drought is characterized by rapid onset and short-duration drought conditions caused by a combination of factors, including high evaporation, high temperature, and prolonged periods of little to no precipitation, leading to a sudden and severe decrease in soil moisture levels. In comparison to conventional drought, it is more susceptible to the effects of global warming and has the potential to become a common drought phenomenon in the coming years, necessitating further research. In this paper, we focused on flash drought events, specifically in forest parts of northeastern China that are included within the Greater Khingan Mountains (GKM), Lesser Khingan Mountains (LKM), and Changbai Mountains (CM), using daily soil moisture data as well as SPOT- VEGETATION NDVI satellite data from 2000 to 2020 and determined their impact on the forest NDVI. Our major findings are as follows. (1) The forest within GKM had the maximum area being affected by flash drought events. (2) The frequency ranged from 1 to 2 times, whereas the total duration varied between 20 and 55 days over the study area in a 21-year period. (3) Flash drought was most common in the plant-growing seasons. (4) The flash drought events had a negative influence on the forest NDVI. Our study contributes to a deeper understanding of the flash drought dynamics in forest areas of northeast China for flash drought monitoring, prediction, and management strategies in this region. Infrastructures are mostly built on unsaturated soil in the tropical region such as Nigeria, yet soil investigations and designs are based on saturated soil mechanics owing to difficulties associated with soil suction measurements using direct methods such as pressure plate extractor, triaxial testing equipment for testing unsaturated soil, etc. Soil water characteristic curve is an important parameter for estimating unsaturated soil property function. This research considered an indirect method (filter paper) of laboratory soil suction measurement (which is relatively simple, fast and inexpensive) and predictive correlation equations for estimating soil water characteristic curve from index properties of soil for four unsaturated tropical soils of Nigeria, three predictive correlation equations were used in this research namely; Navid et al model (2012), Zapata et al model (2000) and Witczak model (2006), the soil water characteristic curve constant parameters computed from these models were fitted through either Van Genuchten model (1980) or Fredlund & Xing model (1994). Results of air entry values of soils from experimental work and predictive correlation equations were in close range which indicated that in spite of the difficulties experienced in performing laboratory suction test, the predictive correlation equations such as the ones used in this research were found to be proper for estimating soil water characteristic curve. As the most dynamic component of terrestrial water cycling, soil moisture plays a pivotal role in the formation, transformation, and consumption of surface water. Simultaneously, it serves as a crucial parameter influencing hydrological processes, vegetation status, and climatic conditions. Therefore, highprecision, high spatiotemporal resolution soil moisture data holds significant importance across various fields, including agriculture, forestry, and meteorology. Presently, traditional methods such as the timeconsuming and labor-intensive drying-weighing technique are inadequate for large-scale monitoring demands, highlighting the advantages of remote sensing methods. However, optical sensors are susceptible to cloud cover and vegetation obscuration, while microwave remote sensing technology faces challenges in balancing spatial and temporal resolutions. The space-borne global navigation satellite system-reflectometry (GNSS R) technology, characterized by short revisit cycles and pseudo-random sampling, presents a new opportunity for soil moisture retrieval. This paper begins by introducing the fundamental theory of soil moisture retrieval using GNSS-R and analyzes error sources during the retrieval process. This includes the scattering and attenuation effects of surface factors such as vegetation and surface roughness on reflected signals, as well as the impact of water bodies on reflectivity. Existing error correction methods and their limitations are summarized, and potential avenues for improvement are discussed. Subsequently, the research progress in recent years regarding space-borne GNSS-R soil moisture retrieval is analyzed from three perspectives: (1) The development status of space-borne GNSS-R constellation. (2)An overview of algorithms for space-borne GNSS-R soil moisture retrieval, including empirical models, semi-empirical models, and machine learning methods. (3) Advancements and directions in integrating GNSS-R with other data for soil moisture retrieval. In conclusion, based on the scattering mechanism of reflected signals, the selection of auxiliary data, and the utilization of incident angle information, this paper discusses the technical challenges faced in current soil moisture retrieval using space-borne GNSS-R technology and provides insights into future research directions. The application of organic materials is an environmental practice in soil restoration, but the use of sugarcane pith, a by-product of the paper industry, as an amendment in soil reclamation has not been tested so far. The objective of this study was to quantify the effects of the application of sugarcane pith on various hydrophysical properties of saline-sodic soil. A 4-month incubation pot trial under stagnant water and leaching conditions was carried out. Application of 5, 10 and 20 t ha−1 pith led to a decrease in bulk density by 19, 41 and 42%, respectively, and a corresponding increase in drainable porosity. Likewise, soil structure expressed in terms of aggregate stability was enhanced substantially from 0.5 to 0.9. Water-saturated hydraulic conductivity ( Ks) and available water content were also positively affected by the amendments with pith; these changes were attributed to its spongy nature and the increase in organic matter with its decomposition. The doubling of Ks to 1.4 cm hour−1 with the application of 20 t ha−1 pith was considered crucial because it resulted in larger rates of leaching of salt. The fast decomposition of pith released Ca2+, Mg2+ and K+ ions, which accelerated the leaching of Na+. We recommend that saline-sodic soil of the type that we investigated in this study should be amended with sugarcane pith powder up to a rate of 10 t ha−1. Future work should investigate the effects of pith amendments in field trials on a wide range of types of saline-sodic soil. This study presents a series of model experiments conducted on single pile embedded in saturated and unsaturated expansive soil. A soil composed of 70% bentonite and 30% sand which represents a very high expansive soil is employed in this study. Soil suction (total and matric) was measured using the filter paper technique and calibrated electrical resistance gauges to study the behavior of the soil water retention curve (SWRC) and initial suction and their influence on the results. The results showed that the ultimate skin resistance is increased about 49% when the initial degree of saturation decreases from 90 to 70%. However, the adhesion factor (α, used in calculating the skin friction) increases as the unconsolidated undrained cohesion decreases and as the initial matric suction decreases. The adhesion factor reached a value of 1.3 when the undrained cohesion is 36 kPa, initial degree of saturation of 100% and initial matric suction of 10 kPa. Iron oxide-coated filter paper (Pi) can estimate labile phosphorus (P) in soil by acting as a P sink. The mechanism of Pi extraction may be more analogous to P sorption by plants than extraction with chemical extractants. The objective of this work was to compare strips of paper prepared by the Chardon method with Olsen, ammonium bicarbonate-diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (AB-DTPA), Bray 1, and Mehlich 1 methods in determining available P in alfalfa (Medicago Sativa) and surface samples of 15 soils of the Hamadan province, western Iran. A pot experiment was carried out in a randomized block design with two P levels (0 and 200 mg P kg-1) and three replications. Plants were harvested in three cuttings in a period of 25 weeks and were used to measure plant-available soil P. The following soil tests for P had increasingly higher average amounts of P: paper strips, Bray 1, Olsen, AB-DTPA, and Mehlich 1. The P extracted by paper strips was significantly correlated with P extracted by Olsen and AB-DTPA. In the first cutting, P uptake was not significantly correlated with the P extracted by the three methods. In the second and third cuttings, plant indices were significantly correlated with P extracted by paper strips, Olsen, and AB-DTPA. Abstract: The preparation and evaluation of a simple paper-based device for the determination of reactive phosphate in natural and soil waters based on the formation of phosphomolybdenum blue is reported. Hydrophilic reagent zones were defined by printing filter paper with a hydrophobic paper-sizing agent using an inkjet printer. The molybdate/potassium antimony(III)-tartrate reagent and ascorbic acid reductant merged together from adjacent hydrophilic zones after spotting the liquid sample onto the paper. The colour intensity of the phosphoantimonylmolybdenum blue complex produced was measured using a flat bed scanner. Under optimal conditions, the paper-based device is characterised by a working range of 0.2–10mgL−1 P, limits of detection and quantitation of 0.05 and 0.16mgL−1 P, respectively, and repeatability of less than 2% RSD at 1 and 5mgL−1 P (n=10 and 8). There was no significant difference between the results obtained using the paper-based device and reference methods (t=0.0135, P (T≤t) two-tail=0.9892, df=38). In its optimum form, the paper-based device was stable for up to 15 day under ambient conditions, and up to 122day when stored at ≤−20°C. The small dimensions, minimal reagent consumption, low cost (a few cents), ease of operation and favourable analytical performance make the proposed paper-based device attractive for on-site environmental monitoring and analysis. This paper deals with the problem of predetermining the spray angle and uniformity of the flat fan sprayer with a semicircular impact surface for the intra-soil application of liquid mineral fertilizers. The jet impact on a round splash plate and radial atomization properties are investigated theoretically, the formation features of the spray with an obtuse angle are studied in a geometrical way, and the design search of the nozzle shape and optimization calculations are performed using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations and then verified experimentally. It was revealed that the spray rate and spray angle can be adjusted by changing the parameter s, and when the spray angle is within s = 0–0.2 mm, it forms spray angles with range of 140°–175°. The spraying angle, in turn, shows the potential length of the tillage knife in accordance with the undersoil cavity dimensions. A spray uniformity of up to 74% was achieved, which is sufficient for applied studies and for intra-soil application operations. According to the investigations and field experiments, it can be concluded that the designed nozzle is applicable for the intra-soil application of liquid mineral fertilizers. The use of flat fan nozzles that form a spraying band under the soil cavity and along the entire length of the tillage knife ensures a highly efficient mixing process, the liquid mineral fertilizers with treated soil (particles) positively contributing to plant maturation. Soil moisture is an essential climate variable of the Earth system. Understanding its spatiotemporal dynamics is essential for predicting weather patterns and climate variability, monitoring and mitigating the effects and occurrence of droughts and floods, improving irrigation in agricultural areas, and sustainably managing water resources. Here we review in depth how soils can remember information on soil moisture anomalies over time, as embedded in the concept of soil moisture memory (SMM). We explain the mechanisms underlying SMM and explore its external and internal drivers; we also discuss the impacts of SMM on different land surface processes, focusing on soil‐plant‐atmosphere coupling. We explore the spatiotemporal variability, seasonality, locality, and depth‐dependence of SMM and provide insights into both improving its characterization in land surface models and using satellite observations to quantify it. Finally, we offer guidance for further research on SMM. It affects everything from the air to the way our landscapes respond to disasters like droughts, wildfires, and floods. We also studied how this phenomenon affects the balance of water and energy in our environment, the health of our plants, and even how it communicates with the atmosphere. We show how it can change depending on where you are on the planet, the time of year, and how deep you dig into the soil. We offer scientists insights into how weather and land surface models can become more accurate by accounting for soil moisture memory. Its understanding not only helps us predict and manage our environment, but also provides opportunities for exciting scientific discoveries. Permafrost-affected ecosystems of the Arctic–boreal zone in northwestern North America are undergoing profound transformation due to rapid climate change. NASA's Arctic Boreal Vulnerability Experiment (ABoVE) is investigating characteristics that make these ecosystems vulnerable or resilient to this change. ABoVE employs airborne synthetic aperture radar (SAR) as a powerful tool to characterize tundra, taiga, peatlands, and fens. Here, we present an annotated guide to the L-band and P-band airborne SAR data acquired during the 2017, 2018, 2019, and 2022 ABoVE airborne campaigns. We summarize the ∼80 SAR flight lines and how they fit into the ABoVE experimental design (Miller et al., 2023; https://doi.org/10.3334/ORNLDAAC/2150). The Supplement provides hyperlinks to extensive maps, tables, and every flight plan as well as individual flight lines. We illustrate the interdisciplinary nature of airborne SAR data with examples of preliminary results from ABoVE studies including boreal forest canopy structure from TomoSAR data over Delta Junction, AK, and the Boreal Ecosystem Research and Monitoring Sites (BERMS) area in northern Saskatchewan and active layer thickness and soil moisture data product validation. Background and aims: The frequent occurrence of extreme rainfall events results in soils experiencing drying–rewetting (DRW) cycles. Such rewetting can lead to a surge in soil CO2 emissions; however, the main regulatory factors involved in this priming effect are unclear. Methods: In this study, we conducted a meta-analysis using data extracted from 43 published papers, to determine the direct regulatory factors involved in the priming effect of soil CO2. Results: The results indicated that the priming effect of rewetting on soil CO2 emissions was influenced by ecosystem type, soil properties, climatic factors, and the number of DRW cycles. The priming effect was the highest in cropland but the lowest in grassland when taking flux values observed before rewetting as the control group. It was also greater in acidic soils (pH < 6.5) and soils with a high clay fraction (clay ≥ 30%) than in other soils. The effect size (lnRR) of soil CO2 emissions was exponentially related to the mean annual precipitation (MAP), and decreased with increases in MAP. In DRW experiments, the priming effect of the first rewetting on soil CO2 emissions was the largest, an effect that gradually decreased with the number of DRW cycles, before disappearing completely. Most importantly, soil moisture influenced the peak time and the pulse time of the priming effect: the greater the change in soil moisture, the longer the peak time duration; the higher the maximum soil moisture content after rewetting, the longer the pulse time duration; and the lower the initial soil moisture content, the bigger the priming effect. Conclusion: Generally, physical mechanisms, especially soil moisture, directly regulate the CO2 priming effect during DRW cycles. Thus, this study provides a theoretical basis for assessing and predicting the impact of future precipitation changes on soil carbon cycling. Future studies should also carefully monitor any changes in soil microorganisms in response to changes in soil moisture during DRW cycles, because these appear to be significantly involved in CO2 release from soils. Drought is a disaster that seriously constrains economic development and endangers human life. This paper explores the potential of Global Navigation Satellite System Reflectometry (GNSS-R) for drought monitoring, using Cyclone Global Navigation Satellite System (CYGNSS) data to monitor drought in Jiangxi and Hunan Provinces, China, in 2022. This study applies the Random Undersampling Boosting (RUSBoost) algorithm to detect waterbodies and linear regression to retrieve soil moisture (SM). Result shows that drought in September was heaviest, with the area of Poyang Lake in Jiangxi and Dongting Lake in Hunan decreasing by 70.2% and 76.9%, respectively, compared to that in June. The variation in retrieved SM shows that the Poyang Lake Plain and Jitai Basin in Jiangxi and the Dongting Lake, Yuanjiang River, and Xiangjiang River basins in Hunan suffered from the most serious drought. The variation in retrievals shows high consistency with various reference datasets, including Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP) SM data and vegetation condition index (VCI). The correlation coefficient between retrieved SM and VCI is 0.93 in Jiangxi and 0.94 in Hunan. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Using polyaspartic acid (PAsp) and bentonite (BT) as the main raw materials, a new type of degradable soil water retaining agent (PAsp-AA/BT) was synthesized by microwave radiation. The optimum synthesis conditions and comprehensive properties of PAsp-AA/BT were discussed and the structure and surface characteristics of PAspsp-AA/BT were characterized by FTIR, SEM, XRD and TGA in the paper. The results showed that the optimum synthesis conditions of PAsp-AA/BT were as follows: the dosages of polyaspartic acid (PAsp), bentonite (BT), initiator potassium persulfate, crosslinking agent N,N′-methylene bisacrylamide was 5, 3, 0.3, 0.03%, respectively, the neutralization degree of acrylic acid was 75%, and the microwave power was 490W. Under this condition, the absorption ratio of the synthesized PAspsp-AA/BT in deionized water and 0.9% NaCl solution was 953 and 164 g/g, respectively. The synthesized PAsp-AA/BT had a high water absorption rate, good water retention and repeated water absorption, and the degradation rate in soil within 30 days reached 32.75%, with good degradation effect. The analysis of SEM, FT-IR, XRD and TGA showed that: the surface of PAsp-AA/BT was rough and had obvious pore structure, which was conducive to the diffusion of water molecules; polyaspartic acid, bentonite and acrylic acid were polymerized; the cross-linking structure was formed between polyaspartic acid, bentonite and acrylic acid; the product of PASP-AA/BT had good thermal stability.
