Intersubjectivity is the proposition that human experience occurs in a world of shared and embodied understandings, mediated by culture and language. Nursing is fundamentally relational, and nursing research stems from an exchange between participants and researchers and indeed around the transaction of the patient and the nurse in the intersubjective space of clinical settings. Through the philosophical standpoints of Husserl, Merleau‐Ponty, Heidegger, and Gadamer we examine these differing philosophical constructs of intersubjectivity and the contribution of these positions to phenomenological nursing inquiry. Particular framings of intersubjectivity should influence the way researchers interact with their participants and data so that the chosen philosophy sits coherently within a research plan and methodology. This exploration of philosophical standpoints is extended through examples of, and reflections upon, the authors' experiences of intersubjectivity in our published phenomenological nursing studies and through dynamic interactions that characterise interpretive activities within a research team. Background: Endovascular clot retrieval (ECR) is known to reduce global disability at 3 months post stroke however limited research exists regarding the trajectory of specific clinical impairments including language, swallowing and cognitive deficits between onset and 3 months. Aims: To assess language, swallowing, and cognitive performance following ECR and explore whether impairment severity is correlated with modified Thrombolysis in Cerebral Infarction score (mTICI), stroke severity or quality of life (QoL). Methods: Assessment was completed within 7 days (T1), 1 month (T2) and 3 months (T3) post‐stroke. Performance was measured with the Functional Oral Intake Scale (FOIS), Repeatable Battery for Assessment of Neuropsychological Status (RBANS), Trail Making Test (TMT A and B) and Brixton Spatial Awareness Test. The Western Aphasia Battery (WAB) was used for left hemisphere stroke. QoL was measured with the Stroke and Aphasia Quality of Life Scale. Results: Twenty‐five participants (median 72 years; 64% male) were prospectively recruited following ECR. High reperfusion success (68% mTICI 3) and low stroke severity post ECR (median 24 h NIHSS = 3, IQR 7–18) were noted. At T1, 10 participants presented with aphasia, eight required a modified diet and 20 had impaired cognition. At T3 all had recovered to a normal oral diet, 39% had persistent cognitive impairment and 45% of patients with left hemisphere stroke remained aphasic. Performance on the WAB, FOIS, RBANS and TMT changed significantly over time (all p < 0.05). The severity score at T1 for all measures, excluding TMT B and Brixton, was significantly correlated with 24 h NIHSS. WAB scores at T3 were correlated with QoL (r = 0.618; p = 0.043). Conclusion: This exploratory study found the longitudinal performance of language, swallowing and cognition significantly improved over time and severity in the first‐week post‐ECR was correlated with 24 h NIHSS rather than the degree of reperfusion. Limited research exists regarding the trajectory of specific clinical impairments including language, swallowing and cognitive deficits. What this paper adds to existing knowledge: This prospective study is amongst the first to explore the longitudinal trajectory of language, swallowing and cognitive impairment using a standardised assessment battery. Twenty‐four‐hour NIHSS was significantly correlated with language, swallowing, global cognition and some measures of executive function. Language performance post ECR was correlated with domain‐specific cognitive assessment of attention, immediate memory and delayed memory, which differed from swallowing performance post ECR that correlated with measures of executive function. Introduction: There is growing scientific and policy recognition that optimising health before a potential pregnancy (preconception health) improves reproductive outcomes and the lifelong health of future children. However, public awareness on this topic is low. We conducted a public consultation to develop language recommendations and identify and prioritise approaches to inform research and improve public awareness of preconception health. Methods: A public consultation was undertaken with people of any gender aged 18–50 years living in the United Kingdom who were not currently expecting a child. Public contributors were recruited through patient and public involvement, community and support groups, an existing cohort study, and an LGBTQ+ charity. An initial round of online group discussions (February/March 2021) explored public contributors' knowledge of preconception health, their recommendations for appropriate language, and ideas about public health approaches. In a subsequent discussion round (May 2021), language recommendations were refined and suggested approaches prioritised. Discussions were summarised based on notes taken by two researchers. Results: Fifty‐four people joined the initial discussion round (66% women, 21% men, 13% nonbinary or transgender; 55% aged 18–30 years, 30% 31–40 years, 15% 41–50 years). Of these, 36 people (67%) participated in the subsequent round. Very few had heard the term 'preconception health', understood what it means, or why and for whom it is important. They recommended avoiding unfamiliar terms without further explanation (e.g., preconception health, medical terms), using language that is positive, encouraging and gender‐sensitive where possible, and using messages that are specific, nonjudgmental and realistic. The phrases 'health and well‐being during the childbearing years', 'health and well‐being before pregnancy and parenthood' and 'planning for parenthood' resonated with most public contributors. School‐based education, social media campaigns and the National Health Service emerged as priority approaches/settings for raising awareness. Conclusion: This public consultation produced recommendations from a diverse group of people of reproductive age in the United Kingdom to improve language and prioritise approaches that increase public understanding of preconception health in ways that are relevant and appropriate to them. This should begin in schools and will require adaptation of curricula, alongside co‐development of public awareness campaigns and guidance for healthcare professionals. They were not involved in the original design of the project, but following the initial round of online group discussions, they contributed to the interpretation and refinement of the emerging concepts in a subsequent round of group meetings. Currently, self-report measures are the primary assessment tool for anxiety disorders. Since they have some limitations, alternative measurements, such as language-based measures, are worth investigating. This paper explores which language markers signal anxiety in fictitious stories written in response to four Thematic Apperception Test (TAT) cards. Participants (n = 492) from a non-probabilistic convenience sample were asked to write a short story next to each TAT card after completing the Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7. We used RoLIWC2015 to conduct the text analysis and applied the LASSO method to identify which language markers predict anxiety. The results showed that the respondents scoring high on anxiety also tend to use more words expressing negative emotions, and fewer words expressing positive emotions. Moreover, their language contained a higher frequency of words that implied semantic differentiation (i.e., but, else) and a lower frequency of words indicating leisure. In conclusion, this paper aims to shed new light on the multimethod assessment of anxiety, mainly focused on specific language signatures as reliable predictors of anxiety symptoms. In less than three decades, the concept 'cerebellar neurocognition' has evolved from a mere afterthought to an entirely new and multifaceted area of neuroscientific research. A close interplay between three main strands of contemporary neuroscience induced a substantial modification of the traditional view of the cerebellum as a mere coordinator of autonomic and somatic motor functions. Indeed, the wealth of current evidence derived from detailed neuroanatomical investigations, functional neuroimaging studies with healthy subjects and patients and in-depth neuropsychological assessment of patients with cerebellar disorders shows that the cerebellum has a cardinal role to play in affective regulation, cognitive processing, and linguistic function. Although considerable progress has been made in models of cerebellar function, controversy remains regarding the exact role of the 'linguistic cerebellum' in a broad variety of nonmotor language processes. This consensus paper brings together a range of different viewpoints and opinions regarding the contribution of the cerebellum to language function. Recent developments and insights in the nonmotor modulatory role of the cerebellum in language and some related disorders will be discussed. The role of the cerebellum in speech and language perception, in motor speech planning including apraxia of speech, in verbal working memory, in phonological and semantic verbal fluency, in syntax processing, in the dynamics of language production, in reading and in writing will be addressed. In addition, the functional topography of the linguistic cerebellum and the contribution of the deep nuclei to linguistic function will be briefly discussed. This paper focuses on Indonesia's efforts to tackle peacerelated climate change, which shows the ASEAN style of multilateralism. The multilateralism style of this Southeast Asian Regional Organization (ASEAN) highlights passivity and ineffective collaboration in the area. By studying the United Nations General Assembly plenary sessions between 2016 and 2021 and the formal documents from both the ASEAN and the Indonesian government, the paper shows that commitment to the discussion at the global and international levels is not moved beyond the meetings or implemented at the local (country) level. With such normative terminologies used in the documents and the employment of its language usage, Southeast Asian multilateralism shows the practice of upholding principles/norms in discussing climate change, but not as an outcome or action. Microaggression has recently gained prominence. It is a psychological construct that examines everyday slights experienced by marginalized groups. While much of the research has stemmed from the United States and has focused on race, gender, and sexuality, very few studies have investigated ways in which complex and overlapping identities involving language, religion, and caste/class intersect in cross-cultural workplace settings in the Global South. This study fills this gap by exploring a minoritized group carrying a 'double discrimination' burden due to their religion and socio-economic historical class background. It examines in what ways, if any, Indian Meos experience microaggressions in cross-cultural workplace settings. In doing so, it extends research that remains understudied. One of the criticisms against microaggression studies is their reliance on self-reporting and recall of past instances, thus lacking validity. To date, cerebellar contribution to language is well established via clinical and neuroimaging studies. However, the particular functional role of the cerebellum in language remains to be clarified. In this study, we present the first systematic review of the diverse language symptoms in spoken language after cerebellar lesion that were reported in case studies for the last 30 years (18 clinical cases from 13 papers), and meta-analysis using cluster analysis with bootstrap and symptom co-occurrence analysis. Seven clusters of patients with similar language symptoms after cerebellar lesions were found. Co-occurrence analysis revealed pairs of symptoms that tend to be comorbid. Our results imply that the "linguistic cerebellum" has a multiform contribution to language function. The most possible mechanism of such contribution is the cerebellar reciprocal connectivity with supratentorial brain regions, where the cerebellar level of the language network has a general modulation function and the supratentorial level is more functionally specified. There is extensive use of humour in Chinua Achebe's Arrow of God. In the heart of very engaging plots and sub-plots bordering on the colonial tremor in Africa, Achebe still finds time and space to infuse humour into his narrative of culture contact and conflict. This paper analyzes the stylistic use of humour in realizing Achebe's overall artistic vision in Arrow of God. As it is, humorous usages dot discourses in the narrative, even in the midst of very severe or intense circumstances. The paper examines the role of humour and the language in which humour is couched to enrich the narrative of culture contact and conflict in an African society. The language of humour in the text under study is found to be sometimes metaphoric, sarcastic, ironic, satiric, hyperbolic and euphemistic. It is therefore concluded that Achebe's deployment of linguistic resources to create humour with which serious communal concerns are attended to is a significant contribution to the development of African storytelling technique, elevating humour as an integral part of the tools of an African oral artist-cum-novelist. In this editorial introduction, we introduce the special section on Geopolitics and Language. We provide a brief overview of some of the ways in which geopolitical scholarship has engaged with themes of language to date, noting in particular the legacy of critical geopolitics – and indeed work that has emerged from its foundation. Further we discuss language itself, a concept we suggest is often implicit but rarely explicitly considered in geographical work. That is, despite rich bodies of work on, for example, the textual and discursive, there is still much to explore in the broader sense of the linguistic. This includes a growing body of work on speech and sound, translation, and decolonisation – all of which also point to the need to go further in geographical and geopolitical engagement with language. The aim of the paper, however, is finally to introduce the section's papers and their specific theoretical and empirical concerns. And this, we argue, is more than words of introduction but also an invitation – to further engagement and geopolitical curiosity. This editorial introduction outlines the journal special section on Geopolitics and Language. It introduces the four contributing papers and situates these in the conceptual concern of the section. It discusses the role of language in geography, and specifically the study of geopolitics, and calls for further engagement with the concepts of language and language‐use – also beyond the ways in which they have been approached to date. Language as an essential factor in human life can be said to be born together with the human. But how does it develop further and how is it acquired by the individual? The issues that will be treated in this paper belong to the psycholinguistic field, a research discipline which is really in the first steps of its development, but considering that without acquisition, language cannot be realized and that its acquisition starts from birth, it turns out to be an interesting issue to be treated. The human with a sound mental and social mechanism acquires language from birth, the first stages of childhood to the age that is considered as the age of almost complete acquisition of language and onwards. In this paper, as well, we will address the topic of speech acquisition by children, who initially use and speak the language as they hear it without their full consciousness, and later to influence to an older age and conscious way in it, by giving it a broader semantic meaning. This research paper explores the linguistic profile of a six-year old autistic boy who acquired the English language without receiving formal instruction. The study tries to shed light on the child's linguistic abilities in the light of Chomsky's innateness theory. This paper uses participant observations and informal questioning to collect data covertly in a naturalistic setting which is the school. The findings of the study revealed that school boy has a functional and communicative use of the English language, which exceeds basic knowledge. His early exposure to YouTube videos in English made him fully conversational, even verbose, contrary to his state when he is using the Moroccan dialect, a fact that implies that English might be his L1 language. The vast majority of work on language and landscape in Geography focuses on the linguistic landscape, which studies the presence or absence of certain languages or dialects on the landscape. This paper goes beyond linguistic landscape to explore language as representation of landscape imaginary. Landscape acts as a powerful symbol, and can work to strengthen territorial identities, solidifying nations as separate entities, intimately connected to the land that they inhabit. This is true of the nation of Galicia, an historic community in the northwest of Spain, where the national landscape and language have come to be inextricably linked in the Galician imagination. In conducting interviews with Galician educators about the nature of their language and its meaning to them personally, an unprovoked link emerged between the language and the landscape, painting the two as essential foundations of Galician identity. Language and landscape are seen as linked foundational symbols in a display of difference between Galicia and Spain. This paper uses themes that emerged from these interviews to elaborate how the Galician language can be seen as a representation of a landscape imaginary. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Languages have undergone a wide variety of evaluations, which have triggered many value-judgements about their worth, i.e. about the better or worse nature of some languages as opposed to others. Currently, this situation still persists, in such a way that the thesis of linguistic egalitarianism is being challenged by several proposals. This paper critically discusses the task of evaluating languages, and it argues that any scientific attempt to rate languages from a linguistic approach should fulfill the basic condition of bringing objective criteria to the fore. However, the paper contends that this condition is not met, and it analyzes four different problems language evaluation is endowed with. The problems convert the proposals of rating languages according to their different worth into arbitrary and decontextualized. We conclude that to construct language rankings (through very different parameters) based on the different worth of languages adds nothing to the scientific knowledge of languages, and, in most cases, it expresses or promotes linguistic prejudice. Since the beginning of the twentieth century, a frequent claim among speakers of local Chinese languages (called fangyan in Chinese) is that their native languages preserve the language of antiquity better than the Beijing-based national language, Mandarin. This paper explores the origin of these claims and probes their significance in the making of the Han ethnoracial collective identity. I argue that claims of linguistic proximity to the imagined ancient origins of Chinese civilization represent a form of "hegemonic Han-ness"—an idealized form of the Han collective identity that was both internally hegemonic, in that it was meant to supersede other expressions of Han-ness, and externally hegemonic, in that it was meant to uphold the superiority of the Han people over other ethnoracial groups. From Zhang Taiyan, whose work provided a model for drawing linguistic connections between contemporary local languages and the language spoken at the dawn of Chinese civilization, to local gazetteer authors, who used linguistic data to prove their mother tongues directly had preserved the language of antiquity without being adulterated by the languages of non-Han peoples, this paper explores how various groups drew upon the cultural power of an idealized Han-centered past to challenge the authority afforded to the national language by the state. This paper draws on 3 years of ethnographic research with young children and their families in a northern English town, employing a more‐than‐human lens to pay attention to what, beyond humans, might be involved in the emergence of children's literacies. The paper focuses on the role of the body and place in the emergence of young children's vocalisations and talk. In particular, the paper rethinks the dominant assumption that children's language is primarily for the purpose of transparently conveying meaning. It does this by drawing on posthuman and decolonial scholarship on childhood and language, and particularly on the work of Glissant on opacity and difference, in order to interrogate the relationship between expression, understanding and power. Thus, the paper outlines how an understanding of the relationship between body, place and talk might inform pedagogy by highlighting the need for space to embrace divergent, complicated, irrational, playful and non‐functional language practices in early childhood, rather than looking for rapid, straight line development. Currently, one of the most important points of contention in defining contemporary pragmatistm arises from the challenge posed to pragmatism's traditional naturalist orientation by Robert Brandom's rationalist pragmatism. This paper compares the two positions, suggesting that the argument between them revolves around the role of language (rather than experience, as is frequently asserted)—more specifically, around the role of systematicity and formal analysis in our conceptions of rational inquiry and discourse. The paper suggests that Brandom's approach may be more suited to a retrospective integration and assessment of the rational learning processes, as opposed to the anticipation of their prospective dimension usually emphasized by the naturalist pragmatism; moreover, that it seems most appropriate in learning contexts that depend on the continued transmission of epistemic authority open to rational correction, and may not be suited for the conceptualization of the less formally structured domains of discourse. The paper seeks to provide an immanent reading of Saussurean corpus having the Course in General Linguistics (CGL and Saussure's manuscripts sources) replacing this theory in Saussure's reflection again. The study will count on the influence of the American linguist - of whom thesis Saussure states that had been taken. The book Life and Growth of Language was also used to explain Saussure's thesis of linguistic change, and here the author can analyze how the comparison between language and social institutions has become meaningless. Luis Buñuel's notable Mexican film El ángel exterminador (1962) and his less familiar Mexican–French film La Mort en ce jardin (1956) coincide in their interest in portraying overbearing spaces of entrapment within which customs and rules of order reach points of exhaustion. With readings informed by elements of Lacanian thought, this paper explores the emergence of a messy, defective law and its implications for the mediatory qualities of language and the experience of subjectivity. I begin by arguing that the films make use of failures in communication to disrupt the paternal myth and the law of the signifier as these concepts are discussed in Lacanian thought. I then examine how these same disorienting forces also affect the imaginary support of the unified subject: Buñuel's camera often reduces the prefigured image of subjects into piecemeal assemblages of partial objects or blends these images with surroundings. This paper concludes with a discussion of how El ángel generates visual lacunae that respond to this disorder. Unlike in La Mort, which portrays an authority that attempts to impose order in response to these gaps, El ángel produces sense through them, in a function understood by the term "extimacy." This concept describes a foundation that is simultaneously intimate and exterior, and it is crucial to affirm the singularity of the subject before the mechanical operations of the signifier. Background: There is growing understanding of the potential benefits of a multi‐method approach to accurately capture language skills of children on the autism spectrum. Tools such as Language ENvironment Analysis (LENA) provide an efficient means of capturing and analysing early child vocalizations (CVs) and the language learning environment. While developed to capture whole‐day recordings of child language in naturalistic settings, there is potential utility in capturing, but little knowledge about, primary LENA metrics—including CVs and conversational turns (CTs)—and novel metrics, such as vocalization ratios (VRs), sampled in clinical practice settings where children are often seen. Moreover, recent research indicates that the novel VR may offer a broad indicator of children's developmental level, beyond just their language abilities, a hypothesis yet to be investigated in a large sample of children for whom the LENA was designed (i.e., pre‐schoolers). Aims: To explore the extent to which primary and novel LENA metrics collected during brief one‐to‐one clinical interaction was a useful indicator of developmental outcomes for children on the autism spectrum. Methods & Procedures: Participants were recruited as part of an on‐going research programme evaluating early intervention outcomes (n = 99; age 14–47 months). Language samples were collected at intake (T1) using the wearable LENA Digital Language Processors during a one‐to‐one, play‐based assessment with a clinician. Direct (Mullen Scales of Early Learning—MSEL) and parent‐report (Vineland Adaptive Behavior Scales—VABS) measures of verbal and non‐verbal skills were also collected at intake (T1) and again at exit (T2), approximately 12 months later. Outcomes & Results: Few correlations were observed between child measures and CVs, a primary LENA metric. The novel VR metric was associated with concurrent direct assessment (MSEL) (and to a lesser extent parent report; VABS) measures of verbal and non‐verbal skills, with moderate positive correlations found between VRs and all directly assessed subscale scores. However, VRs did not uniquely contribute to the prediction of child outcomes when baseline skills were also considered. Conclusions & Implications: The novel VR may provide an insight into autistic children's overall development in addition to their language ability, suggesting that even when collected in a short recording format, LENA might be a useful component of a multi‐method assessment approach. This paper explores aspects of GPT-3 that have been discussed as harbingers of artificial general intelligence and, in particular, linguistic intelligence. After introducing key features of GPT-3 and assessing its performance in the light of the conversational standards set by Alan Turing in his seminal paper from 1950, the paper elucidates the difference between clever automation and genuine linguistic intelligence. A central theme of this discussion on genuine conversational intelligence is that members of a linguistic community never merely respond "algorithmically" to queries through a selective kind of pattern recognition, because they must also jointly attend and act with other speakers in order to count as genuinely intelligent and trustworthy. This presents a challenge for systems like GPT-3, because representing the world in a way that makes conversational common ground salient is an essentially collective task that we can only achieve jointly with other speakers. Thus, the main difficulty for any artificially intelligent model of conversation is to account for the communicational intentions and motivations of a speaker through joint attention. These joint motivations and intentions seem to be completely absent from the standard way in which systems like GPT-3 and other artificial intelligent systems work. This is not merely a theoretical issue. Since GPT-3 and future iterations of similar systems will likely be available for commercial use through application programming interfaces, caution is needed regarding the risks created by these systems, which pass for "intelligent" but have no genuine communicational intentions, and can thereby produce fake and unreliable linguistic exchanges. In breaking out from the analytic paradigm of certainty, St John Henry Newman is credited with keeping channels open for new streams of thought to irrigate philosophy in the century after his. Contemporary commentators sometimes see themes in Newman that anticipate ones taken up by Wittgenstein after him. This paper explores some simple convergences and divergences between Newman's and Wittgenstein's tendency of thought. It draws mainly on Newman's philosophical writings, in such as the Oxford University Sermons and the Grammar of Assent, and from Wittgenstein's mid to later writings, from such works as The Blue Book, Philosophical Investigations and, of course, On Certainty. It argues that Newman's attention to speech as distinct from the rest of what might be called language is critical. This paper eventually challenges the assumption that Wittgenstein has provided the last word on approaches to knowledge such as Locke's. Instead, it proposes that within Newman there is already a more powerful critique, one that would cast Wittgenstein as the last protesting exemplar of an approach he is thought to have dismantled. The negative discourse that is represented in the works of Jacques Derrida, as well as in the works of Dionysius the Areopagite, is the reason why certain authors claim that deconstruction can be interpreted as equal to apophatic. In this paper, we will consider the relationship between these ideas. On the one hand, we will agree with the thesis that there is a certain similarity between them, which refers to the examination of language boundaries. In this paper, using a hermeneutic approach, I discuss G. G. Byron's use of language in describing the socio-political and geographical issues of the countries he visited during his travels in Europe, primarily with regard to Albania. I show that in Childe Harold's Pilgrimage, Byron depicted Albanian scenery in an attempt to create homophily. I also analyse the Albanian reception of the English poet's vision. I justify the relevance of incorporating Byron's position on Albania into the consciousness of the Albanian people, as well as supplementing the Albanian language with the oriental vocabulary he used. One of the purposes of subtitling is to provide effective communication in a desired language. As subtitles are made to convey storyline and dialogue of a film to the (native and non-native) audience, it is crucial to understand that a filmmaker who truly desires to globalize the local and localize the global would engage the use of subtitles to achieve his vision. This paper seeks to pinpoint the essence of subtitling as a communication medium in Yoruba video-films. While developing a conceptual understanding of „language", cultural elements that aid effective communication is also analyzed as well as identifying the distinguishing feature between the dual concepts of translation and transliteration. It is generally assumed that what we hear in our head is what we think and that, when we tell a thought to somebody else, the other person understands what our thought has been. This paper analyzes how we think and what happens when we communicate our thoughts verbally to others and to ourselves. The assumption that we become conscious in language is erroneous: verbal communication is only an intermediary. The conscious experience of verbal communication is a sensory phenomenon. We think through sensory images (see Part I). This natural way of thinking, is a very refined and accurate method of translating thought into consciousness. It expresses our essentially unconscious neural cognitive activity in conscious sensory images: visual thinkers 'see' what they have thought. Why humans use verbal communication to express their thoughts to themselves is difficult to understand as the verbal way is extremely limited. The complex parallel cognitive activity has to be encoded into language tokens which are positioned sequentially as a string of symbols which somehow must express something comparable. Talking to oneself is directed to an imaginary person who is assumed to be the talking person himself. This imaginary person develops with the inner voice in infants and when the child grows up, that imaginary person remains there, somebody he talks to when he thinks and to which he attributes his feelings and his actions. This paper examines the effects of interaction with metaphors on a measure of creative potential: ideational fluency. For this purpose, 150 Mexican college students were selected. They were assigned to two experimental conditions (major and minor interaction with metaphors) and a control group. The CREA Creative Intelligence Test was used as a measure of ideational fluency and two instruments were developed for the presentation of metaphors. As a control measure, an instrument for the presentation of synonyms was developed. All instruments were designed and presented in Superlab. The analysis of covariance showed statistically significant differences (p <.001) between the means of the three groups, where high scores were consistent with the groups with the greatest exposure. This paper constitutes an introduction to our special issue on Transcending circulations of southern and northern concepts: Towards mobile and dialogic perspectives on language puts the spotlight on the hegemonies and marginalizations of mainstream academic productions and the circulations of concepts in the contemporary fields that are labelled Multilingualism, Applied Linguistics, Sociolinguistics, etc. Transcending the demarcations that have emerged in the Language Sciences broadly conceptualized across time, it particularly attempts to illuminate, through different scholars' engagements, the circulations of concepts inside and across academic circles located in various places on the planet, identified as central or marginal places of production of academic norms, including what is understood as global epistemic circuits. The decline of language and communication abilities is common among people living with dementia and impacts on many areas of everyday life, including active participation in social activities and decision‐making. Despite a growing body of supporting evidence for approaches that address language and communication decline in dementia, the concept of communication rehabilitation is largely neglected in this population. This paper reports on the content validation of a novel tool, the Communication Support Needs Assessment Tool for Dementia (CoSNAT‐D). The tool has been developed to assist in the initial identification of communication difficulties and related support needs of people living with dementia. Importantly, the CoSNAT‐D is the only available tool that takes a three‐way informed approach, considering the view of the person living with dementia, their carer and an administering healthcare professional. Content validity was established between September and December 2018 using a modified Delphi approach. An international expert panel rated 32 items of a face‐validated item pool regarding their importance and relevance through an iterative feedback process. Consensus was pre‐determined at 70% of agreement for both importance and relevance of an item. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics and qualitative content analysis of comments provided in each round. Twenty‐eight experts working in dementia, language and communication participated in the Delphi survey. Qualitative analysis resulted in the addition of five items, of which three reached the required consensus in Round 3. Consensus was established for 35/37 items in three rounds. The pilot version of the CoSNAT‐D demonstrates adequate content validity and face validity. The use of the CoSNAT‐D may assist a range of healthcare professionals in the decision‐making process about appropriate next management steps, and thereby improve the care path for people with dementia and language and communication impairment. In order for language to be fully accepted as a goal of communication, it is necessary that “participants have the same code, ie. a system of signs or symbols on the basis of which they compose messages. “Communication flows smoothly when all parties in the process know equally well the code that is used in communication. Sometimes, the code used in the preparation of messages differ from the code known to other participants on the other side of the communication process. Communication becomes fuzzy and one-way and must be brought to a state of unambiguous code used for both preparing and receiving messages. In the process of writing regulations, different language codes are used: the one known to everyone, that is, mostly known to everyone, and the other, which is composed of professional terms and terms from foreign languages. The terms from this second code must necessarily be explained by the terms from the first code, that is better known and more frequently used code, since the regulations are also written for a wider circle of people, not only for lawyers who know the second code better. Due to linguistic, but also structural and logical challenges that arise in the process of writing regulations, in 2010 the Unified Methodological Rules for Writing Regulations were adopted. This act regulated in the most precise way, the way of writing regulations so far, their internal structure, and also insisted on determining a unique writing style and terminology that will be used when writing legal acts because of the variety of addressees to which the regulations refer. In our paper, we consider the possible need for change, ie even greater linguistic specification of some provisions of this regulation, in the context of the role and significance of language in law. On Bernard Suits's celebrated analysis, to play a game is to engage in a 'voluntary attempt to overcome unnecessary obstacles'. Voluntariness is understood in terms of the players having the 'lusory attitude' of accepting the constitutive rules of the game just because they make possible playing it. In this paper I suggest that the players in Netflix's hit show Squid Game play the 'squid games', but they do not do so voluntarily; they are forced to play. I argue that this means that we should rethink Suits's analysis by claiming that all that is needed for players to play is that someone has put the rules in force for them for the reason that it makes playing the game possible. I then illustrate the virtues of the revised analysis by showing how it helps us to defuse Hurka's recent counterexamples to Suits's view. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper aims to prepare a broad discussion with general linguistics that would be articulated in the form of a critique (in the Kantian sense). The framework of this preparation will be the implicit dialogue that arguably took place between Heidegger and late modern linguistics. To carry out this preparation, I provide a brief definition of what is understood by late modern linguistics. I also present its constitutive features and what internal problems can be observed in it from Heidegger's perspective. Finally, I deal with one of its fundamental features, namely, the problem of the distinction between the linguistic and the extralinguistic, which is discussed from the perspective of an interpretation of the Heideggerian analysis of some verses by Hölderlin. The main objective of this work is to contribute to the literature on memory in post-conflict societies by considering how the choice of an official language is entangled in memory politics. Particularly, in Timor-Leste, the choice of Portuguese as the official language reflects an effort to create a narrative of the heroism of the 'Generation of 75' whilst silencing the efforts and memories of the 'Geração Foun' (young generation)' during the fight for independence. Therefore, in the constituency of the new state, language plays a crucial role in post-conflict efforts to (re) establish political foundations for the state and define how individuals will be remembered. Despite a surge in research on post-conflict reconciliation, the specific factors which promote reconciliation remain a subject of debate. In particular, the possible role of shared language in fostering reconciliation has received little scholarly attention. This paper examines two possible channels through which shared language may facilitate reconciliation, and tests these using a new survey dataset of 446 individuals from Serbia. As expected, the results indicated that shared language reduces the negative effect of conflict on intergroup trust and friendship, two crucial components of reconciliation. Furthermore, the results suggest that in the former Yugoslavia this effect is generated by the communication-enabling aspects of a shared language, rather than its other properties such as acting as a marker of ethnic or cultural identity. Background: Adolescents in contact with youth justice are a vulnerable and marginalized group at high risk of developmental language disorder (DLD) and other communication difficulties. Though preliminary studies have demonstrated the benefits of speech and language therapy (SLT) services in youth justice, limited research has empirically tested the efficacy of intervention in these settings. Aims: To evaluate the extent to which intensive, one‐to‐one language intervention improved the communication skills of incarcerated adolescents with below‐average (> 1 SD below the mean) language and/or literacy skills. Methods & Procedures: A series of four empirical single case studies was conducted, using multiple baseline intervention design. Individualized intervention programmes were administered, and progress on outcome measures (probes) was evaluated throughout the baseline, intervention and maintenance phases using Tau‐U, a non‐parametric distribution‐free statistic. Additional measures were used as secondary outcomes of the intervention, including standardized language subtests, subjective rating tools by participants and their teachers collected pre‐ and post‐intervention, and a brief structured participant interview, independently administered by youth justice staff. Outcomes & Results: Medium‐to‐large effect sizes, the majority of which were statistically significant, were detected on the primary outcome measure across the four cases, indicating improvements in the targeted communication skills. Positive results were also evident in comparisons of pre‐ and post‐measures on standardized language subtests, subjective self‐ and teacher ratings of communication, and the participants' impressions of the interventions. For those participants who could be followed up, gains in language skills were generally maintained at 1 month post‐intervention. Conclusions & Implications: This study provides further evidence of the efficacy of one‐to‐one SLT intervention for adolescents in youth justice in order to address language and literacy difficulties. These findings inform future SLT service provision for adolescents in these settings, with clear policy and practice implications. Future research should investigate the wider benefits to individuals' engagement in youth justice intervention and recidivism, as well as assessing maintenance of gains over a longer period. The field of psychology is relatively Western-centric, with its discourse and theorising mainly in English, which influences how it conceptualises its subject matter. However, English itself is a complex product of multiple cultural influences, including widespread 'borrowing' of words from other languages. To shed light on this phenomenon, this paper reports on an etymological analysis of a sample of words in psychology – focusing as a case study on well-being, and specifically a seminal article in positive psychology. The analysis identified 1333 lexemes, of which more than 60% can be regarded as loanwords. The analysis shows the great cultural influences that have combined to form English, and hence psychology, yet also the extent to which this influence has been limited to certain cultures. The paper thus illustrates how psychology has benefited from insights articulated in other languages, but moreover how it might continue to do so through more systematic and comprehensive forms of cross-cultural engagement. This paper describes a case study of a 60-year-old Peruvian refugee in some detail, focusing on the importance of building emotional resilience in a patient in Spanish in order to create a space for learning the English language - the patient did not speak English after 20 years of living in Britain. The work was carried out with an interpreter and some of the literature on working with interpreters is referred to. The paper also briefly outlines the refugee journey in broad terms, which is a journey from the culturally known to the culturally unknown. The question of how well the literature on resilience, which sits firmly within a Western developmental perspective, can be applied to refugees, most of whom come from group and family-based cultures dominated by ideas of honour and shame, is discussed. The paper also touches on the importance of the receiving country enabling or not, as the case may be, a transitional space for refugees who have lost their home and are seeking to find a safe haven in a strange culture. After decades of going beyond the linguistic and textual concerns of early critical geopolitical scholarship, literatures in political geography are today offering rich engagements with the affective, material, embodied, and technological world. However, this paper argues that despite pressures to continually break new intellectual ground, political geography needs not and should not move wholly past concerns with language and language use. Instead, there is at present a need to reassess the value of language as both analytical topic and academic practice; not as alternative, but additive to new insights and conversations. The paper sketches how attention to language has been foregrounded and backgrounded in political geographical endeavours, using the examples of "new Cold War" claims and cybersecurity to show what some consider dichotomous approaches may be brought into conversation. A new research agenda is broadly outlined in order to diversify the discipline. This call for engagement with the linguistic extends not just to the empirical and methodological, but also the academically political: in efforts to diversify the academy, language is a key topic to be grappled with. In reconsidering academic practices, the argument thus extends to writing, publishing, and research writ large: through language and language use, political geography too may be re‐articulated. This paper argues that there is a need to engage more with language and language practices in Political Geography. It notes lessons from early Critical Geopolitics and how they relate to contemporary politics, including language of a "new Cold War," and to cybersecurity. The problem of names of illnesses is both a problem of words and values that should address not only the classification of disorders, but also a fundamental question both for medical sciences and humanities: can psychiatric nosology and classifications fit with the ontological constitution of human beings? This paper aims to discuss the so-called "psychiatric object" and its language and it intends to provide a hermeneutical-phenomenological account to mental health. In doing so, the paper will firstly examine the "psychiatric object" and its language; secondly, it will show the difference between taxonomy and ontology, both of interest for the psychiatric object; third, it will insist on the critique of the epistemological status of psychiatry conceived from a natural point of view following three main paths: a metaphysical one (Heidegger, Jaspers), a social one (Szasz, Foucault, Basaglia), and an ethical one (Laing). Finally, it will clarify why phenomenology and in particular hermeneutical-phenomenology can illuminate the understanding of the psychiatric object and its implications in a cultural context, in order to achieve a more humanistic psychiatry. The empirical turn, understood as a turn to the artifact in the work of Ihde, has been a fruitful one, which has rightly abandoned what Serres and Latour call "the empire of signs" of the postmoderns. However, this has unfortunately implied too little attention for language and its relation to technology. The same can be said about the social dimension of technology use, which is largely neglected in postphenomenology. This talk critically responds to Ihde (mainly) and Stiegler, and sketches a Wittgensteinian inroad to a more holistic and transcendental revision of postphenomenology which does not turn away from the artifact but places it in a wider social context and asks the question regarding the relation between language and technology. Finally, since the earth may be the ultimate condition of possibility, it is asked what this language-sensitive and transcendental approach may imply for rethinking our human position and agency in the Anthropocene. Background: Speech and language acquisition can be a challenge for young children with Down syndrome (DS), and while early intervention is important, we do not know what early interventions exist and how effective they may be. Aims: To systematically review existing early speech, language and communication interventions for young children with DS from birth up to 6 years, and to investigate their effectiveness in improving speech, language and communication outcomes in children with DS. Other outcomes are changes in parental behaviour and their responsiveness Methods & Procedures: We conducted a systematic search of relevant electronic databases to identify early intervention studies targeting speech, language and communication outcomes in children with DS published up to May 2020. A total of 11 studies that met the inclusion criteria were synthesized and appraised for quality using the PEDro‐P scale. There were a total of 242 children. We identified three types of intervention: communication training and responsive teaching, early stimulation programme, and dialectic–didactic approach. Main contribution: The findings from nine out of the 11 studies reported positive outcomes for children's language and communication up to 18 months following the intervention. All nine studies reported interventions that were co‐delivered by parents and clinicians. However, there was also a de‐accelerated growth in requesting behaviours in the intervention group reported by one study as well as a case of no improvement for the intervention group. Three studies provided some evidence of improvements to parent outcomes, such as increased parental language input and increased responsiveness. However, there was a moderate to high risk of bias for all studies included. Conclusions: The findings from this review suggest that interventions that have high dosage, focus on language and communication training within a naturalistic setting, and are co‐delivered by parents and clinicians/researchers may have the potential to provide positive outcomes for children with DS between 0 and 6 years of age. Due to the limited number of studies, limited heterogeneous data and the moderate to high risk of bias across studies, there is an urgent need for higher quality intervention studies in the field to build the evidence base. WHAT THIS PAPER ADDS: What is already known on the subject: Speech and language acquisition is usually delayed in children with DS, yet there are currently no standard interventions for children under 6. A number of research‐based interventions exist in the literature, yet it is unknown how effective these are. What this study adds to existing knowledge: This is the first systematic review that specifically and exclusively focuses on parent‐ and non‐parent‐mediated speech, language and communication interventions for children with DS between 0 and 6 years of age. It complements three existing recent reviews, each of which has a slightly different focus. The previously published reviews have covered only parent‐mediated interventions, excluding interventions not mediated by parents, have reviewed interventions including children and adults, without any mention of what early interventions may be like or how effective these may be for young children with DS, have not always assessed risk of bias or have focused specifically on language interventions excluding those focusing on speech articulation or pre‐linguistic skills. The findings from the current review suggest that interventions that have high dosage focus on language and communication training within a naturalistic setting and are co‐delivered by parents and clinicians/researchers may have the potential to provide positive outcomes for children with Diwn syndrome from 0 to 6. We acknowledge that the current evidence base comes from studies with moderate to high risk of bias, hence our conclusions are not definitive. What are the potential or actual clinical implications of this work?: Speech and language therapists will have synthesized information and a quick reference point on what type of interventions exist for children with DS under the age of 6, and evidence of which intervention approaches may be promising in terms of providing positive outcomes. This study explores the ways in which African Caribbean families communicate with each other and the outside world in the context of post migration. The Big and Small Story in narrative inquiry was used to make sense of the data as it pays attention to the manner and style in which this story is told, and what identities are being claimed post migration. The key findings are set out using three archetypal positions: the trickster, passer/conformer and resister/revolutionary. These were used to capture different ways people responded to power and identities claimed within their daily life. Findings in part of reflect Du Bois' concept of double consciousness to consider the way black people carry out their negotiations with power. These African Caribbean participants were having to think about what is acceptable to the power base and how can this be negotiated. Although researchers often rely on group-level fMRI results to draw conclusions about the neurobiology of language, doing so without accounting for the complexities of individual brains may reduce the validity of our findings. Furthermore, understanding brain organization in individuals is critically important for both basic science and clinical translation. To assess the state of single-subject language localization in the functional neuroimaging literature, we carried out a systematic review of studies published through April 2020. Out of 977 papers identified through our search, 121 met our inclusion criteria for reporting single-subject fMRI results (fMRI studies of language in adults that report task-based single-subject statistics). Of these, 20 papers reported using a single-subject test-retest analysis to assess reliability. Thus, we found that a relatively modest number of papers reporting single-subject results quantified single-subject reliability. These varied substantially in acquisition parameters, task design, and reliability measures, creating significant challenges for making comparisons across studies. Future endeavors to optimize the localization of language networks in individuals will benefit from the standardization and broader reporting of reliability metrics for different tasks and acquisition parameters. • Brain imaging benefits from accurate estimates of activity in individual people. • We conducted a systematic review of single-subject results. • A small number of studies quantified the reliability. This paper is an exploration of my experience of multilingualism in light of existential philosophy and therapeutic practice.
