1. Determinants of Investment Decisions among Retirables: Towards an Investment Planning Model.

Abstract

This study is about the determinants of investment decisions among retirables to evaluate their preparedness of retirables in terms of investment before they retire, the perceived factors that influence them to invest, and their knowledge and education in financial management. It also creates an investment planning model that will fit the needs of the individual depending on their income and risk appetite to invest. The study uses a descriptive correlational method, and the results revealed no significant difference between the respondents according to the three determinants (Investment Behavior, Financial Preparedness, and Investment Influencers). Therefore, they do not differ in terms of determinants in making decisions. However, there was a significant relationship between investment determinants of retirables and investment influencers. The correlation of 0.864 between investment determinants and investment influencers for the retirables was highly correlated and statistically significant. The investment determinants influence investment decision-making; thus, it is claimed that determinant factors are extremely important to implement their investment plan for retirement preparedness. Consequently, knowing the investment determinant behavior is the key to practicing Investment planning. It is recommended, therefore, to strengthen the level of financial preparedness and education of employed people at an early age to raise awareness and improve their understanding of financial risks when they are no longer earning (retired) and make necessary investments. Abstract

The aim of the present study was to examine the impact of professional financial experience on the relationships between financial knowledge and beliefs on financial planning for retirement (FPR) in young adults. We designed a domain-specific personal belief inventory comprising all important components involved in FPR. Financial professionals (n = 145) demonstrated greater knowledge of the financial retirement system compared with non-professionals (n = 382). The two groups, however, differed neither in objective nor self-rated general financial literacy. In non-professionals, higher financial literacy was positively linked to trust in the 2nd pension pillar, self-assessed competence in FPR, personal engagement in FPR, perceiving FPR as less emotionally loaded and FPR task as less complex. These predicted relationships were not found among professionals. Thus, professional experience in financial domain seems to bring a deeper and particularized insight into the pros and cons of the pension system, and consequently vacillates beliefs about FPR. Abstract

Retirement counselors, financial service professionals, and retirement intervention specialists routinely emphasize the importance of developing clear goals for the future; however, few empirical studies have focused on the benefits of retirement goal setting. In the present study, the extent to which goal clarity and financial planning activities predict retirement savings practices was examined among 100 working adults. Path analysis techniques were used to test two competing models, both of which were designed to predict savings contributions. Findings provide support for the model in which retirement goal clarity is a significant predictor of planning practices, and planning, in turn, predicts savings tendencies. Two demographic variables—income and age—were also revealed to be important elements of the model, with income accounting for roughly half of the explained variance in savings contributions. The results of this study have implications for the development of age-based models of planning, as well as implications for retirement counselors and financial planners who advise workers on long-term saving strategies. Financial preparation for retirement is key to positive outcomes for future cohorts. Studies suggest that insufficient preparation is occurring among Baby Boomers. Data from community-dwelling adults (N = 1508, ages 40-70) show that most respondents (22-75%) had taken four specific preparation steps, and few reported negative attitudes toward planning. Five correlates (gathering information, locus of control, self-definition as household planner, financial worries, and negative attitudes) and demographic variables tested in bivariate analyses showed most having associations with preparation. In multivariate analyses, however, only two correlates (gathering information and negative planning attitudes) and demographics (race/ethnicity, education, income, health, age, and education) explained planning behavior.
