Summary: The modular multilevel converter (MMC) is a novel prospective multilevel converter topology for high‐voltage or high‐power applications. This paper presents the 3‐ Φ model integrated into a linear model in transient analysis and the design of current controller for MMC. This paper analyzes the control interactions of MMC on nearby turbine generator. The eigenvalue analysis is used to evaluate the impact of different controller modes of MMC. The impact of converter control with nonlinear switches is analyzed through the transient simulation. The eigenvalue analysis and controller design are carried out on a linear model, and the transient simulation analysis is performed on both the D‐Q model and a three‐phase model of MMC using MATLAB‐Simulink. The results show that the transient simulation of three‐phase model on the proposed approach is consistent with the transient simulation of D‐Q model. Also, the transient simulation results show a satisfactory response with the current controller parameters of the MMC at various operating cases. To validate the results of MATLAB‐Simulink model, the proposed system is implemented in hardware‐in‐the‐loop (HIL) simulation with an integrated subsystem built in two real‐time simulators. The subsystem of mathematical model is implemented in dSPACE, and the subsystem of 3‐ Φ MMC with controller is implemented in Typhoon. Summary: As the share of wind power keeps on increasing, the interaction between synchronous and wind generators pose a challenging issue on power system stability. In order to investigate the impact of wind penetration on stability of power system, appropriate modeling of wind energy conversion systems (WECSs) is necessary. Moreover, it is needed to comprehensively study the impact of wind penetration on power system oscillations. This paper presents a didactic approach for integrating a doubly fed induction generator (DFIG)‐based wind farm from SimPower Systems library to a five‐area 68‐bus power system modeled in Simulink. Inter‐area oscillations with and without wind power penetration are investigated for their characteristics. Renewable energy sources are connected to the grid via power electronics converters at the cost of a reduction in inertia. The concept of virtual synchronous generator (VSG) produces virtual inertia by exchanging active power with the power system. The impact of superconducting magnetic energy storage (SMES) and DFIG on enhancing damping performance of inter‐area is investigated. The increase in damping ratios of inter‐area oscillatory modes verifies the enhancement in small signal stability by connecting SMES and DFIG to the power system. The usage of SMES operating in VSG mode to improve the dynamic stability with highly erratic wind profile is also investigated. The developed MATLAB/SIMULINK‐based DFIG model is simple to use and can be expanded to build efficient controllers. This paper provides an H∞ robust control strategy for a permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG)-based wind farm to realize subsynchronous resonance suppression (SSR) subject to uncertain system distortions and parameter perturbation. Firstly, an eighth-order state space mathematical model of a PMSG-based wind farm is established, including the grid-side converter (GSC), GSC controller, and phase-locked loop (PLL) model. Secondly, the SSR characteristics of a PMSG-based wind farm are analyzed through eigenvalue analysis. Thirdly, a robust subsynchronous damping controller is designed based on eigenvalue analysis of SSR. Finally, the designed robust subsynchronous damping controller is validated with case studies of wind farms. In the redundancy analysis of truss bridges, the calculation of the dynamic response caused by member damage requires accuracy. This paper presents a practical method of calculating the dynamic responses of truss bridge due to member damage considering its vibration characteristic, using eigenvectors instead of using dynamic amplification factor of one-degree-of-freedom system. A steel Pratt-truss bridge of long three-span with multiple influential vibration modes was the object of this research. The investigation of the dynamic response waveform due to member damage showed that there were multiple frequency peaks close to natural frequencies of the damaged truss bridge, and that the constant term of the Fourier transform was same as the result analyzed for the member damage using static analysis. Based on these results, a method for calculating the dynamic response by adding the cross-sectional force obtained by static analysis and by eigenvector was proposed. The range of vibration modes was set using the total modal participating mass ratio as an index, and the eigenvector that most affected the dynamic response of each member was selected for each member. Suppression of noise and vibration in machine products is an important problem, and many methods have been studied. In particular, structural–acoustic coupled effects due to the weight reduction of machines cannot be ignored. In structural–acoustic coupled analysis, the finite-element method in which the acoustic space is described by sound pressure and the structure is described by displacement is often used. However, the eigenvalue analysis in that method takes a great deal of computational time because the mass and stiffness matrices are asymmetric. Instead, in this paper, we propose an efficient coupled analysis method for a three-dimensional acoustic space and a two-dimensional thin plate using a lumped-mass model. The proposed modeling method is derived systematically using Raviart–Thomas elements. In addition, we propose a coordinate transformation method that accelerates the calculations by reducing the number of degrees of freedom (DOF). In this way, a symmetric eigenvalue problem with no extra DOF is derived. The effectiveness of the proposed method is confirmed by numerical calculations. This analysis method is particularly effective for systems in which the acoustic space contributes to the majority of the DOF, since the acoustic space is sparse owing to the adoption of edge elements. Construction of the linearized state-space model is the key step of eigenvalue analysis for SSO study of power systems with large-scale renewable power generation (RPG) integrated. This paper proposes a novel method to construct the state matrix of the AC/DC hybrid power system with RPG within the discrete-time domain. The continuous-time state-space model of each AC/DC component as well as RPG units in the power system, is discretized together with their corresponding control. The discretized equation of each component is then represented by an equivalent circuit consisting of parallel historical current and conductance. According to the power system configuration, the discrete-time equivalent circuit of the whole AC/DC hybrid system is established, and the nodal analysis method is applied for the construction of the discrete-time state-space model of the power system. In this way, the state matrix can be acquired much more conveniently than that of continuous-time state-space method, which needs topology analysis to find independent state variables of the network from the proper tree. The proposed method has been applied in the eigenvalue analysis for the SSO study of a case system adapted from the AC/DC hybrid transmission system in northwest China. • New operators for splitting degenerate subspaces of symmetry group C 6v are proposed. • The operators are applied to the eigenvalue vibration analysis of two structural systems. • The computation of repeating frequencies of C 6v -symmetric systems is greatly simplified. • Obtained results for natural frequencies agree exactly with existing results in the literature. • New insights on the symmetries of vibration modes in degenerate subspaces are revealed. In considerations of the linear vibration of symmetric systems, group theory allows the space of the eigenvalue problem to be decomposed into independent subspaces that are spanned by symmetry-adapted freedoms. These problems usually feature one or more degenerate subspaces (i.e. subspaces that contain repeating solutions). For such subspaces, the associated idempotents, as calculated from the character table of the symmetry group, are not capable of full decomposition of the subspace. In this paper, and based on group theory, simple algebraic operators that fully decompose the two degenerate subspaces of structural problems belonging to the C 6v symmetry group are proposed. The operators are applied to the vibration of a spring-mass system, for which the results for natural frequencies are found to agree exactly with results from the literature. Their application to the vibration of a hexagonal plane grid reveals new insights on the character of the modes of degenerate subspaces. The overall conclusion is that, for problems belonging to the C 6v symmetry group, the proposed operators allow the mixed modes of degenerate subspaces to be separated into two distinct symmetry categories, and are very effective in simplifying the actual computation of the repeating eigenvalues of these subspaces. Physical systems exhibiting symmetry properties may be conveniently studied using the mathematics of group theory. In structural mechanics, group theory has been successfully employed to simplify problems of the bifurcation, stability, statics, kinematics and vibration of symmetric configurations of space frames, space truss domes, double-layer and triple-layer space grids, plates and cable-net systems. Besides significantly reducing computational effort, group theory affords deeper insights on structural behaviour, and a better understanding of complex structural phenomena. The key to group-theoretic simplification is the decomposition of the space of the problem into independent subspaces that are spanned by symmetry-adapted variables obtained by applying idempotents of the symmetry group on the normal variables of the problem. However, for degenerate subspaces of a symmetry group (i.e. subspaces associated with repeating solutions), the associated idempotents do not sufficiently decompose the problem. The aim of this paper is to present, for the C 3 v symmetry group describing the symmetry of a regular 3-sided polygon, a pair of algebraic operators that fully decompose such subspaces. Compared with existing group-theoretic formulations, these operators offer an alternative approach that is simpler and more suited to practical engineering computations, and that affords clearer insights on the physical characteristics of the structural system (such as type of symmetries within the degenerate subspaces). In this paper, we design a new kind of high order inverse Lax-Wendroff (ILW) boundary treatment for solving hyperbolic conservation laws with finite difference method on a Cartesian mesh. This new ILW method decomposes the construction of ghost point values near inflow boundary into two steps: interpolation and extrapolation. At first, we impose values of some artificial auxiliary points through a polynomial interpolating the interior points near the boundary. Then, we will construct a Hermite extrapolation based on those auxiliary point values and the spatial derivatives at boundary obtained via the ILW procedure. This polynomial will give us the approximation to the ghost point value. By an appropriate selection of those artificial auxiliary points, high-order accuracy and stable results can be achieved. Moreover, theoretical analysis indicates that comparing with the original ILW method, especially for higher order accuracy, the new proposed one would require fewer terms using the relatively complicated ILW procedure and thus improve computational efficiency on the premise of maintaining accuracy and stability. We perform numerical experiments on several benchmarks, including one- and two-dimensional scalar equations and systems. Multigrid is one of the most efficient methods for solving large-scale linear systems that arise from discretized partial differential equations. As a foundation for multigrid analysis, twogrid theory plays an important role in motivating and analyzing multigrid algorithms. For symmetric positive definite problems, the convergence theory of two-grid methods with exact solution of the Galerkin coarse-grid system is mature, and the convergence factor of exact two-grid methods can be characterized by an identity. Compared with the exact case, the convergence theory of inexact twogrid methods (i.e., the coarse-grid system is solved approximately) is of more practical significance, while it is still less developed in the literature (one reason is that the error propagation matrix of inexact coarse-grid correction is not a projection). In this paper, we develop a theoretical framework for the convergence analysis of inexact two-grid methods. More specifically, we present two-sided bounds for the energy norm of the error propagation matrix of inexact two-grid methods, from which one can readily obtain the identity for exact two-grid convergence. Interactions of identical inverters in weak grids have received wide attentions. However, in a practical wind farm, parameters of grid-side inverters and lengths of collecting lines are not completely the same. In this case, a multi-inverter system is not symmetric, and thus the interaction mechanism could be more complicated than that of identical inverters. To investigate the interaction mechanism of differently parameterized inverters, this paper proposes a clustering-based modeling method, in which inverters with identical parameters are classified as one group. The clustering-based model allows for efficient stability assessment using three low-order transfer function matrices, instead of a full-order dynamic model. The root locus analysis is applied in the clustering-based model for stability analysis. Results show that the interconnection of distinct groups of inverters deteriorates common current stability, but has no impact on interactive current stability. This paper develops an accurate small signal model for line commutated converter based HVDC (LCC-HVDC). The overall process of the model establishment is demonstrated from five parts: AC system, DC system, control system, phase-locked loop (PLL) and the converter. Considering the limitations of the traditional converter equations, the proposed small signal model takes the commutation process into account so that the overlap angle and AC current are calculated with the actual value rather than the estimated value. The accuracy of the proposed model is verified both in the time-domain simulation in PSCAD/EMTDC and by eigenvalue analysis. One of the major ways of delivering renewable energy generation from large-scale energy bases in northeast, northwest, and northern China, is to bundle the power from wind-photovoltaic-thermal units and then transmit it by alternating current/direct current (AC/DC) systems. The interactions among wind power units, photovoltaic (PV) power units, and high voltage direct current (HVDC) systems make the stability of the interconnected power system more complicated. In this paper, a framework model of wind-PV-thermal-bundled power transmitted by AC/DC systems is constructed based on the mathematical models of thermal power units, wind power units, PV power units, and HVDC transmission systems. Considering the fluctuations of wind power outputs and PV power outputs, a small-signal stability model of an interconnected power system with wind-PV-thermal-bundled power transmitted by AC/DC systems is established based on an existing stability theorem. The interactions among various forms of energy and their impacts on wind-PV-thermal-bundled power transmitted by AC/DC systems are studied through theoretical analysis and dynamic simulation. A sample interconnected power system is used to demonstrate the proposed method. It is shown by simulation results that the wind-PV-thermal-bundled power transmission distance; the electrical distance among wind power units, PV power units, and thermal power units; the grid-connected capacities of wind, PV, and thermal power units; and the power loading ratios of AC lines over DC lines all have various degrees of impacts on the stability of the interconnected power system. Oscillatory instability in modern power system has increased due to increasing complexity and integration of dynamic loads. Stability analysis of such interconnected power system is very prominent in the presence of uncertain load/generation. In this paper, a power system stabilizer (PSS) design approach, which aims at enhancing the oscillatory stability of the multi-machine power system over the specified uncertainty range in forecasted load/generation, is presented. With non-statistical uncertainty, problem of selecting design parameters of the PSS is formulated as an optimization problem with minimization of eigenvalues and damping ratios based multi-objective function. In order to account the non-statistical uncertainties, a boundary active power loss (BAPL) based objective function is proposed. This non-linear BAPL objective function is minimized for determining the optimal setting of the generators voltage and taps of the online tap changing transformers (OLTC) under various power system constraints. In this paper, both the objective functions are solved by a new metaheuristic technique known as gray wolf optimization (GWO). Boundary value-based approach is used to minimize the repeated load flows under uncertain load/generation scenarios. Improved small-signal stability (SSS) is achieved with optimal active power loss of uncertain power system. The static series synchronous compensator (SSSC) has demonstrated its capability in providing voltage support and improving power system stability. The objective of this paper is to analyze the dynamic interaction stability mechanism of a hybrid renewable energy system connected with doubly-fed induction generators (DFIGs) and solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) energy with the SSSC. For this purpose, a linearized mathematical model of this modified hybrid single-machine infinite-bus (SMIB) power system is developed to analyze the physical mechanism of the SSSC in suppressing oscillations and the influence on the dynamic stability characteristics of synchronization. Typical impacting factors such as the series compensation level, the SOFC penetration and tie-line power are considered in the SMIB and two-area systems. The impact of dynamic interactions on enhancing damping characteristics and improving transient performance of the studied systems is demonstrated using eigenvalue analysis and dynamic time-domain simulations, which validates the validity of the proposed physical mechanism simultaneously. This paper explores the potential of hydrogen as an energy carrier for deep-sea applications. Finite element analysis of a type III pressurised cylinder to the intended working pressures of 300 bar internal and up to 600 bar external were carried out for different designs and safety factors. Design parameters such as helical angle, liner, helical, and hoop thicknesses were studied and optimised. A buckling analysis was carried out for the optimised designs and recommendations to increase the maximum allowable external pressure are given. Wind power integration through the voltage source converter-based high-voltage direct current (VSC-HVDC) system will be a potential solution for delivering large-scale wind power to the "Three-North Regions" of China. However, the interaction between the doubly-fed induction generator (DFIG) and VSC-HVDC system may cause the risk of subsynchronous oscillation (SSO). This paper establishes a small-signal model of the VSC based multi-terminal direct current (VSC-MTDC) system with new energy access for the problem, and the influencing factors causing SSO are analyzed based on the eigenvalue analysis method. The theoretical analysis results show that the SSO in the system is related to the wind farm operating conditions, the rotor-side controller (RSC) of the DFIG and the interaction of the controller in the VSC-MTDC system. Then, the phase lag characteristic is obtained based on the signal test method, and a multi-channel variable-parameter subsynchronous damping controller (SSDC) is designed via selecting reasonable parameters. Subsynchronous control interaction (SSCI) is the interaction between the power-electronics control and the series-compensated transmission system that occurs at frequencies below the system nominal frequency. SSCI may occur between the doubly-fed induction generator (DFIG) control system and the series-compensated transmission line, to which the wind park (WP) is connected. Not only do the DFIG control system parameters, but also the WP operating conditions have a significant impact on SSCI. In this paper, the impact of WP operating conditions and DFIG control system parameters on SSCI is analyzed in detail. Guidelines are presented for modifying the DFIG control system parameters to ensure safe operation and acceptable transient responses due to faults. This paper also examines the accuracies of various analytical tools used for SSCI problem identification and proposes a new frequency scan analysis approach for accurate prediction of potential SSCI problems. This paper presents a method for small-signal dynamic studies of power systems including utility-scale PV energy systems considering the effects of dc-side components. Existing methods commonly model a PV energy system as a dc source connected to a grid-tied inverter. This paper shows that the dc components of a PV energy system can also contribute in the dynamics of the power system in the range of small-signal studies. The paper first develops the model of a PV energy system by merging the submodels of dc- and ac-side components. Then, a method to obtain the augmented model of the power system including a PV energy system will be explained using a study system. The study system consists of a PV energy system in parallel with a synchronous generator connected to a grid. Then, based on eigenvalue analysis, verified by time-domain simulations, it is shown that the dc-link capacitor, front-end converter, and its controller can introduce oscillatory modes in subsynchronous range of frequencies. In this paper, we present a family of Perry conjugate gradient methods for solving large-scale systems of monotone nonlinear equations. The methods are developed by combining modified versions of Perry (Oper. Res. Tech. Notes 26(6), 1073–1078, 1978) conjugate gradient method with the hyperplane projection technique of Solodov and Svaiter (1998). Global convergence and numerical results of the methods are established and preliminary numerical results shows that the proposed methods are promising and more effective compared to some existing methods in the literature. Summary: The traditional droop control method in a DC microgrid (DCMG) fails to achieve accurate current sharing among parallel‐connected dispatchable units when the connecting feeders have unequal resistances, or when the units supply local loads apart from loads at the common dc bus. In this paper, a novel modification of the droop control strategy (additional feedback term in the outer control loop) is suggested to overcome the above limitations. The proposed method is robust, noise‐resilient, amenable to the "plug and play model", and employs local measurements, thereby, dispensing with the need for communication between remote nodes. A small‐signal model of the system with the proposed control strategy is derived for carrying out eigenvalue and participation factor analysis. A sensitivity analysis is also carried out to inspect the impact of variation of system parameters on small‐signal stability. The effect of time delay and noise on system small‐signal stability is also studied. A robust stability analysis is also carried out. The proposed control strategy is easily implementable on digital hardware. Time domain simulations using PSCAD (Power System Computer Aided Design)/EMTDC(Electromagnetic Transients including DC) is carried out to validate and compare the performance of the proposed technique vis‐a‐vis other existing methods. This paper presents the modal analysis of different HVDC cable bundles. Using modal theory, specific transformation matrices are presented, and the modal equivalent circuits are illustrated. The behavior of the resulting modes is studied in a wide frequency range, the impact of different cable parameters and burial configurations on the modal characteristics are analyzed. A concept for online fault localization in HVDC cable transmission based on the difference between the modal velocities and consequently the arrival times of the modal traveling wave initial peaks is presented. In this method, modal voltages and currents are used instead of direct measurements and the proposed concept uses one-sided measurement without needing to detect the second TW reflections. Multiple faults are applied to CIGRE HVDC models in PSCAD/EMTDC and the modal analysis is obtained in MATLAB. The impact of different sampling frequencies, fault resistance, fault location and different grounding schemes on the proposed modal fault location principle is analyzed. This paper is concerned with polynomial approximations of the spectral abscissa function (defined by the supremum of the real parts of the eigenvalues) of a parameterized eigenvalue problem, which are closely related to polynomial chaos approximations if the parameters correspond to realizations of random variables. Unlike previous work, we highlight the major role of this function smoothness properties. Even if the eigenvalue problem matrices are analytic functions of the parameters, the spectral abscissa function may not be differentiable, and even non-Lipschitz continuous, due to multiple rightmost eigenvalues counted with multiplicity. This analysis demonstrates smoothness properties not only heavily affect the approximation errors of the Galerkin and collocation based polynomial approximations, but also the numerical errors in the evaluation of coefficients in the Galerkin approach with integration methods. This paper presents two modified Hager–Zhang (HZ) Conjugate Gradient methods for solving large-scale system of monotone nonlinear equations. The methods were developed by combining modified forms of the one-parameter method by Hager and Zhang (2006) and the hyperplane projection technique. Global convergence and numerical results of the methods are established. Preliminary numerical results show that the proposed methods are promising and more efficient compared to the methods presented by Mushtak and Keyvan (2018) and Sun et al. (2017). Integration of energy storage systems (ESSs) to microgrids (MGs) due to the growing penetration of intermittent energy resources is a great motivation to develop studies in the context of optimal sizing and placement of these systems. In this paper, a multi-objective bi-level optimization problem is addressed based on the stochastic nature and dynamic model of power system elements. As a preliminary step, the optimal size and capacity of the battery energy storage system (BESS) are determined to minimize frequency fluctuations. This level has been performed based on three approaches considering the daily intra-hour stochastic data. In the secondary level, the dynamic behaviour of all MG elements has been considered and correspondingly a dynamic objective function based on system eigenvalues and voltage sensitivity index (VSI) has been developed. According to the proposed objective function, the secondary step for sizing and placement of the battery units has been performed by adaptive particularly tuneable fuzzy particle swarm optimization (APT-FPSO) algorithm to reduce power losses, improve the voltage profile/ stability, and mitigate low-frequency fluctuations. High-frequency oscillation is one of the critical issues threatening the stability of modular multilevel converter (MMC) based high-voltage direct current (HVDC) system. A new 2 kHz high-frequency oscillation has occurred in the wind farm-side MMC station of Rudong wind farm integrated MMC-HVDC project of China during no-load charging process. The mechanism of this high-frequency oscillation is different to previous ones. Apart from the time delay of MMC, the stray capacitance of converter transformer makes a significant contribution to the high-frequency oscillation. This paper investigates the high-frequency oscillation mechanism of wind farm-side MMC station during no-load charging process. First, the harmonic state space (HSS) model of a wind farm-side MMC station is established. In addition to the leakage inductance, the stray capacitance is considered in the converter transformer model. To reveal the significance of the converter transformer stray capacitance in this new high-frequency oscillation, the root loci of the system are calculated with varying stray capacitance. Then, the state variables with high degree of participation in the high-frequency oscillation modes are determined by the participation factor analysis. A reduced-order model suitable for the high-frequency oscillation analysis is further established based on the participation factor analysis results. Next, the high-frequency oscillation mechanism is revealed by impedance analysis. Finally, the effects of system parameters are analyzed by the combination of eigenvalue analysis and impedance analysis. This paper proposes a new type of generalized droop-based proportional power sharing scheme during load change for parallel inverter-interfaced islanded microgrids, which is an automatic strategy and is independent of any particular nature of transmission lines, i.e., resistive or inductive. Real and reactive powers are shared in proportion to the droop gains by implementing the voltage control law proposed in this paper; in which the inverter-interfaced voltage-sources are kept at equal reference values. The control gains are chosen based on eigenvalue analysis in a way that the system stability is ascertained. The performance of the designed controller is simulated under different microgrid structures such as load variation and various types of transmission lines; in which the results show superior dynamic performance in comparison to the conventional droop-based control strategy. The purpose of this paper is to develop a framework in which one can identify and predict the numerical instability of the steady state solution due to the solution reconstruction for cell-centered finite volume methods on unstructured meshes and to stabilize the problem by optimizing the reconstruction stencil. In this work, we first develop and extend a mathematical method, introduced by Haider and his colleagues, to measure the stability impact of the reconstruction phase for both linear and nonlinear problems regardless of the solution. Second order and third order accurate advection and Burgers problems as well as second order Euler problems are used to present detailed practical results and discussion around the use of the local reconstruction map for stability analysis. This method shows that for a range of different physical problems, increasing the stencil size will usually lead to more stable problems. Additionally, an empirical study is performed which sheds light on connections between the mesh properties and the stability of the reconstruction, which in turn helps choose the reconstruction stencil more wisely. Secondly, we propose a systematic approach to optimize both the shape and the size of the reconstruction stencil for better numerical stability through eigenvalue analysis. In this approach, one can directly optimize the solution reconstruction stencil for every control volume to obtain better numerical stability and convergence properties for steady state problems. In this paper, we propose an improved sub-synchronous resonance (SSR) damping controller (SSRDC) and a related control strategy to mitigate the SSR in a capacitive series-compensated double-fed induction generator based wind farms, based on the damping torque analysis. The proposed strategy is utilized for enhancing the system stability. Compared with the traditional damping controller, the proposed SSRDC is simultaneously embedded into the $d$ -axis and $q$ -axis control channels in the inner current loop of the rotor-side converter. On this basis, combined with the eigenvalue analysis and improved particle swarm optimization algorithm, the optimum gain coefficients of the SSRDC can be determined for maximizing the mitigation effect under different operation conditions of the series compensation levels and wind speeds. Moreover, the effect of the weight coefficients in the objective function on the SSR suppression is also investigated. This paper addresses modeling, stability analysis and control of the doubly fed induction generator (DFIG) for wind turbines (WTs). In the present work, imperialist competitive and artificial bee colony algorithms are used for optimizing parameters of controllers of a WT with DFIG. Algorithms for optimizing the controllers' parameters are described. Based on this, an eigenvalue-based objective function is utilized to optimize the parameters. To evaluate the optimized gains, simulations are performed on a single machine-infinite bus system, and the dynamic responses of system with parameters obtained from two optimization techniques are compared. This paper focuses on the stability analysis of systems modeled as neutral delay differential equations (NDDEs). These systems include delays in both the state variables and their time derivatives. The proposed approach consists of a descriptor model transformation that constructs an equivalent set of delay differential algebraic equations (DDAEs) of the original NDDEs. We first rigorously prove the equivalency between the original set of NDDEs and the transformed set of DDAEs. Then, the effect on stability analysis is evaluated numerically through a delay-independent stability criterion and the Chebyshev discretization of the characteristic equations. Abstract Curve squeal noise is a severe railway noise problem that can occur when a railway vehicle negotiates a sharp curve. It is usually characterised by a very loud tonal noise and can be very annoying for people in the vicinity. It is generally attributed to friction-induced instability, either due to a falling friction characteristic with increasing sliding velocity or to a mode coupling mechanism which can lead to instability even for a constant friction coefficient. The squeal frequency is usually associated with one or more wheel modes. However, the wheel is coupled dynamically to the track and insufficient attention has been paid in previous research to the role played by the rail dynamic behaviour. In this paper, the effect of the rail dynamics on curve squeal under constant friction conditions is investigated by means of different modelling approaches. The rail is firstly modelled using a waveguide finite element (WFE) model and it is found that the inclusion of the rail dynamics in the model can lead to squeal in some situations where it would otherwise not occur. Various effects are then considered that may introduce additional resonant behaviour into the rail dynamics. These include the effect of the rail cross mobility, rail cross-section deformation, the influence of the periodic support of the rail and reflections between multiple wheels on the rail. The effect of the rail pad stiffness is also explored. However, the results show that all these factors have little influence on the predicted curve squeal instabilities. By means of a reduced model, the main characteristics of the rail dynamics that can result in squeal are then assessed. It is shown that the mass and damping-like behaviour of the infinite rail are at the origin of the instabilities rather than any modal behaviour of the track. Curve squeal may occur for a single wheel mode even if the rail is represented by a damper, which is a close approximation to the vertical mobility of the track at high frequencies. Abstract The ITER large power supplies of the superconducting magnets and heating and current drive systems, fed by the Pulsed Power Electrical Network, can absorb from the grid active and reactive power up to 500 MW and 950 Mvar respectively. In this paper, a new analytical approach based on the state space formulation is proposed to investigate the dynamic stability of such complex system, including the main power components and their control, with the aim of identifying possible instability phenomena due to interactions among the ac/dc converters, reactive power compensation systems and related controllers. This model describes the dynamics of the main components of the ITER pulsed power supply systems and it is based on small signal approach to tackle the non linearity of the ac/dc conversion and reactive power compensation systems; the discrete phenomena have been approximated by continuous transfer functions, so the linear control theory can be applied for the stability analysis, making this method very effective and fast. In this paper, some issues related to the impedance-based stability criterion, such as RHP poles in the minor-loop gain, how to specify source and load impedances, and node-dependent stability margins are discussed and the vector fitting method is used to improve the method. This results in an eigenvalue analysis of the system instead of using the Nyquist diagram, and leads to obtain more information about the system. Furthermore, a participation factor analysis can be used to identify the problematic subsystem. This paper shows the effects of microgrid (MG) integration, location, penetration and load levels on the power systems oscillating stability. The analysis work was carried out in the IEEE 14 bus test system which is widely used in stability studies. Stability studies were carried out with the help of eigenvalue analysis over linearized system models. HOPF bifurcation point detection was performed to show the effect of MGs on the system loadability margin. In the study results, it is seen that MGs affect system stability positively by increasing system loadability margin and has a damper effect on the critical modes of the system and the electromechanical local modes, but they reduce the damping amount of the electromechanical interarea modes. In this paper we study the performances of generalized minimal residual method (GMRES) preconditioned with geometric multigrid (GMG), applied to steady and unsteady buoyancy driven flow problems, discretized with the finite element method. For the unsteady case, the second order Crank–Nicolson method is used for the temporal discretization. At each geometric multigrid level, we use Richardson iterative solvers preconditioned with different combinations of physics-based and domain decomposition preconditioners. Three different preconditioners are considered: incomplete LU decomposition (ILU), overlapping Vanka-type domain decomposition for additive Schwarz method (ASM), and field split (FS) physics-based decomposition. We also analyze the effect on the smoother of how the variables are ordered, and in particular whether the leading variable is the velocity or the temperature, resulting in six classes of preconditioners: ILU_VT, ILU_TV, ASM_VT, ASM_TV, FS_VT and FS_TV. The eigenvalue analysis for the six preconditioners is conducted to study the rate of GMRES convergence under several Prandtl numbers. The numerical performances of nested combinations of the above preconditioners are compared. Numerical results show that the pair of FS_VT and FS_TV preconditioners works better than the other two pairs, and that the FS_TV preconditioner always performs the best in terms of the computational time for all the steady and unsteady cases. This paper focuses on the impact of control system on small‐signal stability of the Hybrid Multi‐Infeed HVDC(H‐MIDC) system, in which the Line‐Commutated‐Converter based HVDC (LCC‐HVDC) and Voltage‐Sourced‐Converter based HVDC (VSC‐HVDC) links feed into an AC system in close mutual proximity. A comprehensive linearized small‐signal model is developed for an H‐MIDC system. Based on the eigenvalue analysis and participation factor analysis, the inherent oscillatory modes of the H‐MIDC system are revealed. Then, the impact of the most sensitive control system parameters on the least‐damped modes are investigated. The studies show that (i) the proportional gains of PLL functions of LCC and VSC stations, and AC voltage outer loop controller of VSC station are highly coupled, and presents the most sensitivity to the least damped modes; (ii) parameters of PLL in LCC station, and outer loop of AC voltage control and PLL in VSC station can highly impact the damping of the oscillatory modes and even cause instability, and (iii) smaller PLL gains in LCC and VSC stations, and smaller proportional gain of AC voltage control of VSC station are preferable and can enhance damping of dominant modes. This paper analyzes the influence of non-dispatchable energy sources on the dynamic stability of stand-alone MicroGrids (MGs) with autonomous control of frequency and voltage based on inverters. The analysis considers the use of eigenvalue techniques. Although this methodology is well known, the contribution of this paper is twofold. First, it proposes an algorithm for designing the inverter interface to meet the requirements associated with the harmonic distortion (THD) and dynamic performance of the inverter. Second, it provides an analysis of the dynamic stability of MG considering different levels of penetration of non-dispatchable energy sources, variations in the network parameters and the presence of dynamic loads (i.e., induction motors). In this paper, we investigate a frequency domain approach for eigenvalue-based detection of a primary user, based on equal gain combining (EGC) and spectrum estimation with Bartlett’s method. This paper considers two techniques for eigenvalue detection which are Maximum Eigenvalue Detection (MED) and the Maximum-Minimum Eigenvalue (MME) detector. We exploit the eigenvalues that are associated with the Hermitian form representation of Bartlett’s estimate to assess the performance of the aforementioned eigenvalue techniques in the frequency domain. For each case, we quantify the performance based on the probabilities of false alarm and missed detection over Rayleigh and Rician fading. A bivariate Mellin transform approach is employed to obtain the probability distribution function for the ratio of the extreme eigenvalues under each hypothesis. All obtained formulas are validated via Monte-Carlo simulations, and the results give a clear insight into the performance of the investigated methods. In frequency domain, MED outperforms both the MME detector and Periodogram-based energy detection even in a worst case scenario of noise uncertainty, while the MME detector exhibits heavy-tailed statistical characteristics and thus its receiver operating characteristics tend to stay on the line of no-discrimination. As an important manufacturing process, mechanical assembly affects directly product quality. Conventional quality inspections and estimations of mechanical assembly are primarily concentrated in "static quality", such as size coordination, shaping and positioning tolerances, etc. However, mechanical assembly actually has its own dynamic quality, which contributes to that of whole product. Inspecting only static quality is thus incomplete for quality estimation of the assembly. On the basis of substructuring method, this paper at first applies eigenvalue analysis to investigate the effects of assembling process on the dynamic transfer-functions, expressed by spectral-based frequency response functions (FRFs), of substructural components involved in the process. Eigenvalue modules of FRF-matrix-ratios of FRF before assembling to that after assembling are analyzed to quantify the effects, which are consequently indicated by the mean module. Then, according to the explicit definition of "dynamic quality of mechanical assembly" introduced in this paper, dynamic quality matrix of mechanical assembly and its mean eigenvalue module are worked out and chosen to be the right quantitative measure and indicator for dynamic quality estimation of assembly system. Meanwhile, a lumped-parameter model and its experimental counterpart are employed to validate effectiveness of the analytical outcomes obtained and the quality estimation method established in the study. This paper deals with the stability analysis of a rotary power flow controller (RPFC). RPFC is a newly presented flexible alternating current transmission system device based on the rotary phase shifting transformer (RPST) configuration. This device comprises a shunt and a series transformer and two RPSTs. In this paper, a linear model is developed for RPFC in the dq-reference frame. The model includes two RPSTs, shunt, and series transformers. Stability of the device is studied using eigenvalues of the state matrix. Effects of system parameters such as resistance, reactance, and phase difference of the shunt and series transformers and RPSTs on stability are investigated using eigenvalue sensitivity analysis. Simulation results using PSCAD/EMTDC software and analytical results based on eigenvalue analysis are presented to evaluate effects of different parameters on stability of RPFC. A surface-wave-based endfire antenna with an enhanced impedance bandwidth is presented in this paper. The antenna consists of a surface-wave guide (SWG) and five strips printed on the SWG. The endfire radiation benefits from the surface-wave diffraction of the SWG which is investigated with the Snell's law, effective surface impedance and eigenvalue analysis. A prototype is fabricated and measured, and the measured results indicate that the antenna has two resonances and its bandwidth is enhanced up to 16.1% (4.0-4.73 GHz). In this paper, we apply the augmented Lagrangian (AL) approach to steady buoyancy driven flow problems. Two AL preconditioners are developed based on the variable’s order, specifically whether the leading variable is the velocity or the temperature variable. Correspondingly, two non-augmented Lagrangian (NAL) preconditioners are also considered for comparison. An eigenvalue analysis for these two pairs of preconditioners is conducted to predict the rate of convergence for the GMRES solver. The numerical results show that the AL preconditioner pair is insensitive with respect to the mesh size, Rayleigh number, and Prandtl number in terms of GMRES iterations, resulting in a significantly more robust preconditioner pair compared to the NAL pair. Accordingly, the AL pair performs much better than the NAL pair in terms of computational time. A small signal model of a multi-infeed high-voltage direct current (HVdc) transmission system containing a line commutated converter (LCC) and a voltage source converter (VSC) is developed. This model represents the LCC and VSC converters as operational impedances as seen from the converter ac busbar. This permits the converters to be included in the effective short-circuit ratio (ESCR) calculations. The resulting ESCR is referred to in this paper as the “Impedance based Effective Short Circuit Ratio” (IESCR). It is shown that the maximum power transfer limit (referred to as the maximum available power or MAP) of the converters is better predicted by this index compared to the conventional ESCR which ignores the operational impedances of the converters. The question also arises as to how close to this theoretical maximum power transfer limit can the HVdc system operate. Using the small-signal model, it is shown that with commonly used control strategies, the predicted MAP can only be achieved by reducing the controller gains. This paper is concerned with the temperature effect on the vibration of a cable-stayed beam. The thermal effect is considered by using two non-dimensional factors for the cable tension force and sag. The nonlinear in-plane and out-of-plane vibration equations of motion of the cable-stayed beam with thermal effect are derived by using the extended Hamilton's principle. Eigenvalue analysis is performed to obtain closed-form eigenvalue solutions. It is shown that the effect of temperature variation plays a dominant role on the vibration behavior of the cable-stayed beam, and the effect is closely related with the initial tension force and the stiffness ratio. As to the in-plane motion, both positive and negative correlations between the temperature variations and natural frequencies are found, which depend on the mode order and the stiffness ratio of the cable-stayed beam. However, as to the out-of-plane motion, there only exist negative correlations between the temperature variation and natural frequencies, and the effect of temperature dropping condition seems more obvious. Moreover, both for the in-plane and out-of-plane motions, the locations of veering points between two natural frequencies are shifted under the thermal effect, which can significantly affect the internal resonance between different modes of the cable-stayed beam. Presence of flaws or cracks may cause substantial decrease in the strength of a component or structure. This kind of structural damage will accumulate over time, leading to significant decrease in ultimate load carrying capacity of structural members and premature brittle failure. In this paper, a coupled analytical and numerical study is implemented in order to evaluate buckling load of cracked cylindrical shells which is often encountered in the fields of civil engineering, offshore engineering and mechanic engineering. In the first phase of the study, buckling load of cylindrical shells with circumferential crack is investigated by treating the symmetric model as a cracked rectangular beam-column on an elastic foundation. The cracked beam-column is modelled as two beam elements on elastic foundation connected by an equivalent rotational spring and governing characteristic equation is obtained. Finite element models are used to verify analytical results and assess their accuracy, based on which good agreement is observed between analytical and numerical results. Effect of different parameters such as the length of cylinder, radial stiffness of cylinder, crack location and crack severity is studied on the axial load carrying capacity of such members. A simplified equation is proposed in order to calculate buckling load of tall cylindrical shells with a circumferential crack. In the second phase, the buckling load of cylindrical shells with a partial crack is studied using the results of finite element analysis on models with varying crack length. Based on the results of numerical analysis, an empirical equation is proposed to interpolate buckling load of these members between two limiting values, namely the buckling loads of same uncracked cylinder and the cylinder with circumferential crack. In this paper, we propose a dynamic bandwidth selection method for thinning noisy point clouds into curves. Due to the nonhomogeneous distribution of noise or varying curvature of the data, the thinning procedure requires a dynamically adjusted bandwidth along the curve. On the other hand, the selected local region must be sorted along a suitable direction vector for local curve fitting purposes. The contribution of this paper to the field is 2-folded: first, a normalized eigenvalue analysis-based method is used to determine the best local bandwidth. The second task is getting a good regression line of the local region for ordering the data. In this step, a feature that is based on the Euclidean distances between points is used to determine the best regression line in the search space. Finally, a third-order parametric polynomial is fitted to the local data using the least squares method. We adapt and test our algorithm on the widely used k-nearest neighbor and constant radius methods. Our experiments show that the proposed methods automatically produce comparable results with these methods at their best parameter, which is empirically determined. Our methods also do not require any empirically determined parameter to adjust the best bandwidth or to select a good regression axis. This paper studies the specific R & D process of a novel external coupling type SC (ECSC), which is based upon current source injection (CSI-ECSC) for improving the dynamic characteristics of ADN. The SC current signals are coupled to the current sampling loop from outside the converter controller. And the employment of the existing current sample makes it unnecessary to redesign the internal physical structure of the existing controller. As a result, the SC assembling is simplified and its workability is improved. In this paper, a detailed exemplary ADN with direct-drive permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG) is firstly set up in math for full eigenvalue analysis. Then, the CSI-ECSC is designed with its control loop, interface circuit, and parameter setting. Furthermore, by using PSCAD/EMTDC, groups of case studies are conducted in ADNs where photovoltaics (PVs) and energy storage (ES) are included.
