Borregaard Industries Ltd. is a woodpulp factory producing cellulose, paper and rayon, combined with a chemical industry plant producing lye, chlorine, sulphuric acid and organic chemicals. Acids, alkalis, detergents and solvent known skin irritants, are used in manufacture and a survey of occupational dermatitis was performed to establish the magnitude of the problem. Most of the workers with a positive history of an eczematous reaction had no lesions at the time of examination. Chronic occupational dermatitis is therefore a relatively mild problem in this industry. In the cellulose production department there is a slight excess of occupational dermatitis compared to the other production areas, probably due to the more manual type of work.
