District heating and cooling (DHC) networks, and in particular, the fifth generation of DHC networks, offer great potential in increasing the overall system efficiency and reducing CO2 emissions in the heating and cooling of urban districts. Due to the growing complexity of these energy systems, the use of new planning methods, such as the use of dynamic simulation models based on Modelica, becomes more important. However, especially with large, complex thermal networks, there is a high effort for manual model construction and parameterization. For this reason, we present a framework for automated model generation of DHC networks based on simulation models in Modelica written in Python. The core function of the Python framework is to transform a graph representation of a district heating network into a dynamic simulation model. The authors briefly describe the workflow and demonstrate its applicability with three different use cases. We investigate the impact of different design decisions, e.g., comparing the difference between central and decentral pumps as well as a combination of both in one network. In addition, we present the results of evaluating the impact of different network temperature levels or pipe insulation compared to the overall energy supplied to the network, leading to the conclusion that the presented framework is capable of reducing the manual effort for performing DHC network simulations with Modelica and allows to easily perform parameter studies in an early planning phases in the future. Among the various heating technologies that can be applied to urban areas district heating is recognized to allow significant reduction in primary energy consumption, provided that the system is properly designed and operated. Thermo-fluid dynamic simulation tools can be of extreme importance in order to achieve this objective. This paper aims at presenting a thermo fluid dynamic model for the detailed simulation of large district heating network and showing how it can be usefully applied to examine options for the reduction of primary energy consumption. The model is tested using experimental data and then applied for analyzing transient operations of the Turin district heating network, which is the largest network in Italy and one of the largest in Europe. A comparison between simulations and experimental results shows that the model is able to predict the temperature in the nodes of the network with good accuracy. The thermal power required to each plant is also calculated with a good level of accuracy. The model can be used for the simulation of operational strategies, thus representing a versatile and important tool for the implementation of advanced management such as the installation of local storage units or the variation of user request schedules. • A thermo-fluid dynamic model for the detailed simulation of large DHNs is proposed. • The model receives data from the substations as the input. • The transient simulation of the Turin DHN is compared with measurements. • The model can be applied to implement advanced management strategies. To this aim, several design and operating parameters (e.g.: weather conditions, heat selling price for users, national unitary price of electricity, etc.) are dynamically taken into account. The heating and cooling demands and loads of the buildings to be fed by the network working fluid are dynamically calculated. The system pipeline network is modelled through a suitable plug-flow approach. Fluid temperatures are calculated in each network node. The optimization of several system design and operating parameters is achieved for different objective functions. A suitable analysis is considered for selecting the most convenient urban zones for system application. The whole simulation model is implemented in a suitable computer code written in MatLab. By such tool useful design criteria and feasibility analyses can be obtained. To show the capabilities of the presented simulation tool, a novel case study, referred to a district heating system supplied by an existing thermoelectric power plant, was developed. The conducted analysis is based on system optimizations focused on the number of users, the selling heat/electricity prices and system geometric features. As for example, for minimizing the system payback to about 14.0 year, the optimal number of users and network length are 5 × 103 and 2.7 km, respectively. In this case the primary energy savings and the avoided carbon dioxide emissions are about 11.0 GWh/y and 16.1 kt CO2 /y, respectively. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Biomass combined heat and power plants (CHPPs) can operate target-specifically because of their controllability while supporting decarbonization in district heating. The transition from the German Renewable Energies Act funding, which has promoted biomass CHPPs but is now about to expire, to direct marketing, is a major economic challenge for many biomass-heating grids. To successfully accomplish it, the flexible operation of biomass CHPPs, compared to the previous baseline-operation, is becoming an increasingly important requirement if participation in the electricity markets is to remain profitable. This paper presents a techno-economic assessment of flexible CHPP operation in a modeled district heating system with a CHPP, a peak load boiler and a thermal heat storage. The simulation model compares two cases - a natural gas and a wood-chip gasifier CHPP. The analysis of the results investigates the parameters that need to be adapted to make biomass-fired CHPP heating grids more efficient compared to fossil-fired CHPP heating grids in a flexible operating scenario. It highlights the technical and economic superiority of a fossil-fired CHPP in flexible operation in comparison to the wood gasifier system.
