Aims Provide an overview of remote motivational interviewing (MI) interventions for chronically ill patients, and understand their degree of effectiveness on different health outcomes. Methods and results A systematic review with meta-analysis was conducted using the following databases: PubMed, CINAHL, PsychInfo, and Web of Science. Eligibility criteria included studies that administered remote MI alone or in combination with other remote approaches. A narrative synthesis and two meta-analyses were performed. Fifteen studies met the inclusion criteria. MI administration almost exclusively occurred by telephone and individual sessions. Eight studies reported treatment fidelity aspects, and four declared adopting a theoretical framework. Most targeted outcomes were therapeutic adherence, physical activity, depression, quality of life, and mortality. Risk of bias varied markedly, with the largest source resulting from selection process and intervention performance. The two meta-analyses indicated a significant effect of MI on depression [standardized mean difference = –0.20, 95% confidence interval (CI): –0.34, –0.05, Z = 2.73, P = 0.006, I 2 = 0%], and no effect of MI on glycosylated haemoglobin (mean difference = –0.02, 95% CI: –0.48, 0.45, P = 0.94, I 2 = 84%). Conclusion Remote MI can be a promising approach for improving depression in chronic disease patients. However, studies are inconclusive due to risks of bias, heterogeneity, and lack of reporting of interventionist's training, treatment fidelity, and theoretical frameworks' use. Caregivers promote heart failure self-care, yet little is known about how relationship quality and dyad gender influences self-care. The purpose of this study was to evauluate the contribution of dyad gender and relationship quality on heart failure self-care. The study was a secondary analysis from a heart failure self-care intervention. Dyad gender was categorized by patient-caregiver gender as Male-Male (M + M), Female-Female (F + F), Female-Male (Fp + Mc), and Male-Female (Mp + Fc). The Self-Care of Heart Failure Index v.6.2 measured self-care. The Mutuality Scale assessed relationship quality. Univariate linear regression identified determinants of patient self-care maintenance and self-efficacy. The sample (n = 503) was 48% Mp + Fc, 27% F + F, 15% Fp + Mc, and 10% M + M. Better caregiver mutuality in M + M dyads was associated with lower self-care maintenance (b = −7.45, 95% CI [−13.80, −1.11]) and self-efficacy (b = −18.07, 95% CI [−29.11, −7.04]). Better patient mutuality was associated with higher self-efficacy for M + M dyads (b = 12.63, 95% CI [2.18, 23.09]). Mutuality and dyad gender appear important for self-care. Background: Self‐employment represents a new work opportunity for new nursing graduates; however, little is known about nursing students' Intention to meet this new demand from the labour market. Aims: To develop a theory‐driven questionnaire to assess students' Intentions for self‐employment and psychometrically test this scale. Method: A cross‐sectional study was conducted investigating 344 nursing students in their final year in an Italian university. The content, face, construct, convergent and discriminant validity, and reliability were evaluated. We also tested the theory of planned behaviour. Results: The Planned Self‐Employment Scale demonstrated satisfactory validity and good reliability. A moderate Intention to be self‐employed emerged among nurses (3.6 ± 1.5 out of 7). This level of Intention was predicted by the Attitudes and Perceived Behaviour Control dimensions. Conclusion: The Planned Self‐Employment Scale exhibited good validity and reliability and can thus be used with nursing students. Implications for Nursing Management: Educators need to design a curriculum to improve students' decision‐making and autonomy. At the central level, there is a need to produce guidelines that offer guidance to both nurses and patients, as well as the system as a whole with regard to this new form of nursing service. Mutuality in patient–caregiver dyad may improve heart failure (HF) patient self-care and caregiver contribution to self-care, but literature is scarce. We evaluated the influence of mutuality and its dimensions on patient–caregiver dyad self-care. A sample of 366 HF patient–caregiver dyads was enrolled. The Actor–Partner Interdependence Model was used to identify the influence of individual patient and caregiver mutuality on their own self-care (actor effect) and on partner self-care (partner effect). The total mutuality score had an actor effect on patient self-care maintenance (i.e., behaviors aimed at maintaining HF stability) and on patient and caregiver self-care confidence. Total score of patient mutuality also had a partner effect on caregiver self-care management (i.e., responses to symptoms of HF exacerbation). Specific mutuality dimensions had different actor and partner effects on patient and caregiver self-care. Background: Preventing hospitalization and improving event-free survival are primary goals of heart failure (HF) treatment according to current European Society of Cardiology guidelines; however, substantial uncertainty remains in our ability to predict risk and improve outcomes. Although caregivers often assist patients to manage their HF, little is known about their influence on clinical outcomes. Aims: To quantify the influence of patient and caregiver characteristics on patient clinical event risk in HF. Methods: This was a secondary analysis of data using a sample of Italian adults with HF and their informal caregivers (n = 183 patient–caregiver dyads). HF patients were followed over 12 months for the following clinical events: hospitalization for HF, emergency room visit for HF or all-cause mortality. Influence of baseline caregiver- and patient-level factors (patient and caregiver age; dyad relationship type; patient New York Heart Association (NYHA) Class, cognition, and comorbidities; and caregiver strain, mental health status, and contributions to HF self-care) on patient risk of death or hospitalization/emergency room use was quantified using Cox proportional hazards regression. Results: Over the course of follow up, 32.8% of patients died, 19.7% were hospitalized for HF and 10.4% visited the emergency room. Higher caregiver strain, better caregiver mental health status and greater caregiver contributions to HF self-care maintenance were associated with significantly better event-free survival. Worse patient functional class and greater caregiver contributions to patient self-care management were associated with significantly worse patient event-free survival. Background: Caregivers play an important role in contributing to heart failure (HF) patients’ self-care but no prior studies have examined the caregivers’ contributions to HF patients’ self-care and no prior studies have examined potential determinants of the caregivers’ contribution to HF patients’ self-care. Aims: The purpose of this study was to describe the caregivers’ contribution to HF patients’ self-care and identify its determinants. Methods: The study design involved a secondary analysis of cross-sectional data. Caregivers’ contributions were measured with the Caregiver’s Contribution to Self-care of HF Index (CC-SCHFI) which measures the caregiver’s contribution to self-care maintenance and management and caregiver confidence in contributing to HF patient’s self-care. Potential determinants were measured using a socio-demographic questionnaire completed by caregivers and patients, and patient clinical data was obtained from the medical record. Results: Data from 515 caregiver/patient dyads were analyzed. Most (55.5%) patients were male (mean age 75.6 years) and most (52.4%) caregivers were female (mean age, 56.6 years). The caregivers’ contribution to patients’ self-care maintenance was low in weight monitoring and physical activity but higher in checking ankles, advising on low-salt foods and taking medicines. The caregivers’ contribution to patients’ self-care management was low in symptom recognition. When symptoms were recognized, caregivers advised patients to reduce fluids and salt and call the provider but rarely advised to take an extra diuretic. Caregiver confidence in the ability to contribute to patient self-care explained a significant amount of variance in the caregiver’s contribution. Conclusion: These findings suggest that caregivers in this sample did not contribute meaningfully to HF self-care. Providers should educate both HF patients and caregivers. Aim To test the situation-specific theory of heart failure self-care with structural equation modelling. Background Several authors have proposed theories on heart failure self-care, but only the situation-specific theory of heart failure self-care by Riegel and Dickson is focused on the process that patients use to perform self-care. This theory has never been tested with structural equation modelling. Design A secondary analysis of data from a cross-sectional study. Methods Patients with heart failure were recruited in 21 cardiovascular centres across Italy during 2011. Data were collected with a sociodemographic questionnaire, chart abstraction for clinical data and the Self- Care of Heart Failure Index v.6·2. Results A sample of 417 participants was enrolled in the study (59% males, mean age 72 years). The following propositions were tested and supported: Symptom monitoring correlates with treatment adherence; symptom monitoring and treatment adherence have a direct, positive relationship with symptom recognition and evaluation that in turn have a direct, positive relationship with treatment implementation; treatment implementation has a direct, positive relationship with treatment evaluation. In addition, the following three relationships were found: Symptom monitoring has a direct, positive relationship with treatment implementation; symptom recognition and evaluation have direct, positive relationships with treatment evaluation and symptom monitoring correlates with treatment evaluation. Aims: Explore the self‐care experiences of patients with multiple chronic conditions (MCCs) and caregivers' contributions to patient self‐care during COVID‐19 pandemic. Design: A descriptive qualitative design was used. The COREQ checklist was used for study reporting. Methods: Individual semi‐structured interviews were used to collect data from patients with MCCs and caregivers selected from the dataset of an ongoing longitudinal study. Data analysis was performed through deductive thematic analysis. The middle‐range theory of self‐care of chronic illness, which entails the three dimensions of self‐care maintenance, monitoring and management, was used as a theoretical framework to guide data collection and analysis. Results: A total of 16 patients and 25 caregivers were interviewed from May to June 2020. The participants were mainly women, with a mean age for patients of 76.25 years and caregivers of 45.76 years; the caregivers were mainly the patients' children (72%). During the pandemic, some patients reported remaining unchanged in their self‐care maintenance, monitoring and management behaviours, others intensified their behaviours, and others decreased them. Caregivers played an important role in protecting patients from the risk of contagion COVID‐19 and in ensuring patients' self‐care of chronic diseases through direct and indirect interventions. Conclusions: Critical events can modify the self‐care experiences of chronically ill patients and caregivers' contributions, leading to maintenance, increase or decrease of self‐care and contributions to self‐care behaviours. Impact: Patients with MCCs and their caregivers can react in different ways in their performances of self‐care and contribution to patients' self‐care behaviours when ordinary daily life is disrupted; therefore, nurses should assess such performances during critical events to identify the individuals at risk of reduced self‐care and promote the most suitable healthcare services (e.g. eHealth) to implement individualised interventions. Background and Aim: Mutuality is a process in which the patient participates and is involved in decision‐making and care interventions. The aim of this study was to measure mutuality in the relationship between nurses and chronic illness patients. Methods: This study had a cross‐sectional design; the sample included 249 patients and 249 nurses. Mutuality was measured with the Nurse–Patient Mutuality in Chronic Illness scale. Results: Patients had higher scores in almost all items (p < 0.001). Patients demonstrate high reciprocity towards nurses and the ability to express and share their emotions. Patients consider nurses their point of reference and share with them their health goals. Nurses show more difficulty in being mutual with the patient, especially in the aspects related to the sharing of emotions, objectives, and planning. The egalitarian relationship score was low in both patients and nurses. Conclusion: These findings are important to consider at clinical, educational, organisational, and policy levels. Nurse education and organisation must push towards respect for the wishes of patients, the possibility of expressing their choices, and their involvement in the care plan. Practice Implications: In clinical practice, it is necessary to put the patients more at the centre, involving them in the identification of objectives and in making decisions. Aim: Patients with heart failure experience multiple co-occurring symptoms that lower their quality of life and increase hospitalization and mortality rates. So far, no heart failure symptom cluster study recruited patients from community settings or focused on symptoms predicting most clinical outcomes. Considering physical and psychological symptoms together allows understanding how they burden patients in different combinations. Moreover, studies predicting symptom cluster membership using variables other than symptoms are lacking. We aimed to (a) cluster heart failure patients based on physical and psychological symptoms and (b) predict symptom cluster membership using sociodemographic/clinical variables. Design: Secondary analysis of MOTIVATE-HF trial, which recruited 510 heart failure patients from a hospital, an outpatient and a community setting in Italy. Methods: Cluster analysis was performed based on the two scores of the Hospital Anxiety-Depression scale and two scores of the Heart-Failure Somatic Perception Scale predicting most clinical outcomes. ANOVA and chi-square test were used to compare patients' characteristics among clusters. For the predictive analysis, we split the data into a training set and a test set and trained three classification models on the former to predict patients' symptom cluster membership based on 11 clinical/ sociodemographic variables. Permutation analysis investigated which variables best predicted cluster membership. Results: Four clusters were identified based on the intensity and combination of psychological and physical symptoms: mixed distress (high psychological, low physical symptoms), high distress, low distress and moderate distress. Clinical and sociodemographic differences were found among clusters. NYHA-class (New York Heart Association) and sleep quality were the most important variables in predicting symptom cluster membership. Conclusions: These results can support the development of tailored symptom management intervention and the investigation of symptom clusters' effect on patient outcomes. The promising results of the predictive analysis suggest that such benefits may be obtained even when direct access to symptoms-related data is absent. Implications: These results may be particularly useful to clinicians, patients and researchers because they highlight the importance of addressing clusters of symptoms, instead of individual symptoms, to facilitate symptom detection and management. Knowing which variables best predict symptom cluster membership can allow to obtain such benefits even when direct access to symptoms-data is absent. Impact: Four clusters of heart failure patients characterized by different intensity and combination of psychological and physical symptoms were identified. Aims and objectives: To examine nursing students' health habits. More specifically, the objectives were to determine whether there were any changes in their health habits during their course of study, and to understand whether the students' perceptions about good health conditions cohered with their health‐related behaviour. Background: The transition from high school to university has an undesirable effect on students' health habits, and nursing students' unhealthy behaviours may prevent them from helping patients improve their poor health habits. Design: A longitudinal design was used. The study followed the recommendations of STROBE (Strengthening the Reporting of Observational studies in Epidemiology). Methods: All students were recruited from a nursing science degree course in an Italian university. The sample consisted of 351 nursing students. Data were collected at the baseline during their entrance into the university (T0) and at the end of their third year of coursework (T3). We developed the Nursing Student Health Habits Scale, which was administered by a trained researcher. The McNemar test and the Wilcoxon signed‐rank test to evaluate the differences in health habits between T0 and T3, and a logistics model to assess the factors influencing students' good health perceptions were used. Results: From T0 to T3, there were decreases in the number of students who requested physician consultations (p =.01) and increases in those who exercised daily (p =.003). There was also a change in the nutrition model (p =.018). In the multivariate model, physician consultations for medical problems and performing physical exercise were factors influencing good health perceptions. Conclusions: Future research is needed to illuminate other aspects of students' health habits. Relevance to clinical practice: Universities are advised to address these problems by reflecting on undergraduate and postgraduate curriculum content concerning health management and disease prevention. PURPOSE: To evaluate if nursing diagnoses, interventions, and outcomes, as recorded by nurses in Italian hospitals, were semantically equivalent to the NANDA‐I, NIC, and NOC (NNN) terminology. METHODS: A cross‐mapping study using a multicenter design. Terms indicating nursing diagnoses, interventions, and outcomes were collected using the D‐Catch instrument. Cross‐mapping of these terms with NNN terminology was performed. FINDINGS: A sample of 137 nursing documentations was included. Over 80% of nursing diagnostic terms, interventions, and outcomes were cross‐mapped into NNN terminology. CONCLUSIONS: The study showed that most of the natural terms used by nurses were semantically equivalent to the standardized terms of NNN terminology. Background. Caregivers are crucial in ensuring that their relatives with heart failure (HF) reach proper self-care levels. Despite this, the demanding nature of caring for others can lead to poor outcomes and the compromise of own needs, which raises the need for perceived social support. Prior research does not offer a thorough knowledge of how caregivers of people with HF regarded social support and the characteristics that went along with it. Purpose. The aim of this study was to develop a comprehensive understanding of perceived social support and its associated factors among caregivers of individuals with heart failure. Methods. This is a secondary analysis of a convergent mixed-methods design study. The perception of social support, mutuality, anxiety, depression, and quality of life were assessed in 158 heart failure patients and their caregivers (physical and mental dimensions). In 50 caregivers, we also performed semistructured interviews. Results. The mixed analysis and integration of qualitative and quantitative inferences revealed two main factors affecting perceived social support. First, caregivers with strong familial network and greater number of caregivers available for tangible caregiving support and moral support perceived increased sense of social support. Second, caregivers with enhanced mental health had increased sense of social support. Conclusions. Caregiver perception of social support might be influenced by mental well-being status. To improve caregivers' perceptions of social support and community belonging, it is necessary to create and assess community- and individual-based mental health promotion interventions. Aims and Objectives: To explore the association between patient and caregiver depression and patient self‐care and caregiver contribution to self‐care in the context of ostomy care. Background: Self‐care is essential for ostomy patients and their caregivers. The ostomy self‐care process can be considered a dyadic phenomenon in which the patient and the caregiver interact together and work as a team. The presence of depressive symptoms may limit the patient's ability to perform self‐care and caregivers' abilities to engage in caregiving tasks. Research into the dyadic influence of depression on self‐care behaviours from the perspective of ostomates and their caregivers is still in its infancy. Design: Secondary analysis of a multicentre, cross‐sectional study. The STROBE checklist was used to report the present study. Methods: Patient–caregiver dyads were recruited from eight ostomy outpatient clinics from February 2017 to May 2018. Depression was assessed with the nine‐item Patient Health Questionnaire in both patients and caregivers. Patient self‐care was evaluated with the Ostomy Self‐Care Index, and caregiver contribution to self‐care was assessed with the Caregiver Contribution to Ostomy Self‐Care Index. Both instruments measure the dimensions of maintenance, monitoring and management. The actor–partner interdependence model was performed for the dyadic analysis. Results: In total, 252 patient–caregiver dyads (patients: 69.8% male, mean age 70.05; caregivers: 80.6% female, mean age 58.7) were enrolled. Patient depression was positively associated with caregiver contribution to self‐care maintenance. Caregiver depression was negatively associated with self‐care management. Relevance to Clinical Practice: These findings add a better understanding of the reciprocal influence of dyadic depression on patient and caregiver contributions to self‐care in ostomy contexts was found. Patient and caregiver depression influence patient self‐care and caregiver contribution to self‐care. In recent years, the increase in textual data production has meant that researchers require faster text analysis techniques and software to reliably produce knowledge for the scientific–nursing community. Automatic text data analysis opens the frontiers to a new research area combining the depth of analysis typical of qualitative research and the stability of measurements required for quantitative studies. Thanks to the statistical–computational approach, it proposes to study more or less extensive written texts produced in natural language to reveal lexical and linguistic worlds and extract useful and meaningful information for researchers. Aims: Given the complexity of heart failure (HF) management, persons with HF and their informal caregivers often engage in dyadic illness management. It is unknown how congruent appraisal of dyadic HF care type is associated with dyadic health. Our aim was to examine how congruence in and satisfaction with appraisal of dyadic HF care type contribute to quality of life (QOL) for dyads. Methods and results: This is a secondary analysis of cross-sectional data on 275 HF care dyads (patients 45.1% female, caregivers 70.5% female). Congruent appraisal and satisfaction were assessed using the Dyadic Symptom Management Type instrument. Quality of life was measured using the Short Form-12. Multilevel dyadic models were estimated to examine the contribution of congruence and satisfaction with dyadic care type to physical and mental QOL. Congruent appraisal of dyadic care type was positively associated with caregivers' mental QOL (B = 2.69, P = 0.026). Satisfaction with dyadic care type was positively associated with physical and mental QOL for persons with HF (B = 1.58, P = 0.011 and B = 2.09, P = 0.002, respectively) and informal caregivers (B = 1.70, P = 0.004 and B = 2.90, P < 0.001, respectively), while controlling for age, New York Heart Association class, daily hours spent together, relationship type, and congruence with dyadic care type. Conclusion: Satisfaction with dyadic care type appraisal was a stronger contributor to QOL for HF care dyads, compared with congruent appraisals. Qualitative research is fundamental to understanding the nature and complexity of human phenomena. While cultural and psychometric validations exist for quantitative tools, the same cannot be said of qualitative ones. There are other many challenges when conducting a multinational qualitative study, which includes different cultural and linguistic 'biases'. This paper presents some key issues that researchers may encounter when designing and developing multinational and multicultural qualitative studies, and also provides some strategies to overcome difficulties and ensure rigour. Aims Caregiver characteristics and behaviours are associated with patients' and caregivers' outcomes. However, there is scarce evidence on interventions aimed at improving caregiver contribution (CC) to patient self-care, caregiver self-efficacy, and caregiver preparedness in heart failure (HF). This study aims to evaluate the effect of Motivational Interviewing (MI) on CC to patient self-care, caregiver self-efficacy, and caregiver preparedness in HF. Methods and results This is a secondary outcome analysis of MOTIVATE-HF randomized controlled trial. Caregivers of patients with HF were randomized into three arms: Arm 1 (MI for patients), Arm 2 (MI for patients and caregivers), and Arm 3 (standard care). The intervention consisted of one MI session plus three telephone contacts. Data were collected at baseline and after 3, 6, 9, and 12 months. A total of 510 patient and caregiver (median age 54 years, 76% females) dyads were enrolled, 235 caregivers and 238 patients completed the study until 12 months. Caregiver contribution to self-care maintenance and management and caregiver preparedness significantly improved over time, but without significant differences among the three arms. At 9 months, caregiver self-efficacy improved more in Arm 2 than Arm 3 [difference: 8.36, 95% confidence interval (CI) (3.13; 13.59), P = 0.001]. This improvement remained significant also at linear mixed model [ β ^ = 1.39, 95% CI (0.02; 2.75), P = 0.046]. Conclusion Motivational Interviewing did not improve CC to patient self-care and caregiver preparedness. Aim: To test the mediating role of burnout in the relationship between self‐efficacy and academic success in nursing students. Design: This was a cross‐sectional secondary analysis of longitudinal research aimed at exploring the academic success of nursing students. Methods: We enrolled a convenience sample of nursing students attending 21 Italian baccalaureate nursing degree programmes. Data were collected from 2014 to the 2018–2019 academic year. We analysed the wave of data collected during the third year of the programme. The measurements were the Academic Nurse Self‐Efficacy scale (ANSEs) and the Scale of Work Burnout (SWEBO). A mediation analysis with a counterfactual approach was performed. Results: The participants (n = 556) had a median age of 20 years (IQR 19–22) and the majority was female [70.5% (392/556)]. Academic success was reached by 51.97% (289/556) of the students. The findings reveal a significant direct effect of self‐efficacy on academic success and also a significant indirect effect of this relationship via burnout. Conclusion: The mechanism by which self‐efficacy influences academic performance in nursing students is more complex than a simple direct relationship. Universities should consider screening students for variables affecting academic success to decrease academic costs and increase ranking systems classification. Impact Nurses' professors should be engaged in strategies to promote self‐efficacy. Aims: To explore caregivers' needs and problems in three European countries and associate the clusters of caregivers' needs with their sociodemographic characteristics. Design: A qualitative focused mixed methods design was used. Methods: In total, 52 caregivers of heart failure (HF) people were interviewed in three European countries between March 2017 and December 2018. Transcripts were analysed using the seven‐phase method of the exploratory multidimensional analysis according to Fraire with Reinert lexical classes findings were organized in dendrograms. Mayring's content analysis was also performed. Results: Three clusters of caregivers were identified: spouses, adult children and non‐family members. Caregivers not only provide HF patients with vital unpaid support for their physical and emotional needs, but they are continually trying to cope with their social isolation and deteriorating health. Conclusions: Informal caregiving emerged as a complex process influenced by various sociodemographic factors. Gender, relationship type and economic status are the important factors to be considered planning to develop approaches to address the needs of caregivers serving people with heart failure. Impact A comprehensive understanding of the nature of informal caregiving of individuals with heart failure, the complexity of the real‐world sociodemographic and cultural factors is warranted. The use of the EMDA method gave us the possibility of processing large masses of qualitative data through rapid, complex calculations. In detail, AATD allowed us to study in deep the significant fuzziness of what caregivers expressed and to analyse the content of the entire interviews and to produce global knowledge by using multi‐dimensional statistical methods to grasp the fundamental sense of the interviews, beyond the simple words. Three clusters were identified in the samples, including spouses, adult children and non‐family members. This study demonstrated that some sociodemographic characteristics could lead to everyday needs. Therefore, these demographic characteristics should be considered in developing targeted interventions. The research was conducted in Europe, but the technique shown can be replicated everywhere. The findings not only impact nursing but can be extended to all those stakeholders who concur with a public health educational mission. This study was a retrospective analysis of prospectively collected data that aimed to map patients' care transitions following admission to a specialist palliative care service in Italy called Antea Centre. Patients' data was extracted from the Antea local database from 2007 to 2011. External transitions were defined as a change in the setting of care, with the patient no longer being cared for by Antea staff. Internal transitions were defined as a change in the setting of care, with the care still being provided by Antea staff. A total of I 123 patients out of 5313 admitted to the palliative service (21%) experienced transitions. Patients who experienced no transitions after their admission to the palliative care service were more likely to have a Karnofsky Performance Scale Index ≤30, to have been referred by a hospital physician, to have a shorter survival time, and to have home as their place of death (P<0.001).Although the patients with no transitions had worse clinical conditions, organisations should pay attention to reducing the possible negative effects of transitions, such as discontinuity of care and poor coordination. Aim: To develop a comprehensive understanding of resilience and its associated factors among informal caregivers of people with heart failure. Design: Transnational multicentre convergent mixed methods approach. Methods: This study was conducted in three European countries: Italy, Spain and the Netherlands; during February 2017 and December 2018. In total, 195 caregivers completed the Connor–Davidson Resilience Scale, Caregiver Burden Inventory and Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale. From a nested sample 50 caregivers participated in semi‐structured face‐to‐face interviews. Data were analysed using qualitative content analysis, multiple regression and joint displays. Results: The caregivers' mean age was over 60 years. The quantitative results showed that caregivers experienced anxiety and depression regardless of a good score of resilience and moderate level of burden. Regression analysis showed that the resilience was associated with caregiver depression. From qualitative findings three resilience inhibiting (psychological outlook, physical weariness and affective state) and two promoting factors (community interconnectedness and self‐comforting activities) were generated. Mixed analysis confirmed that depression decreased caregivers' resilience. Conclusions: Caregivers of people with heart failure experience continuous stress and anxiety resulting in reduced resilience. Collaborative efforts are needed to build multifaceted interventions and programs to enhance caregivers' resilience by targeting the factors identified in this study. Impact: The quality of informal caregiving is affected by the resilience of caregivers. No research has explored the resilience levels and its factors in this population. Depression, psychological outlook, physical weariness and affective state are negative factors of caregivers' resilience. Personal strategies combined with social and community support and belongingness enhance caregivers' resilience. Aims and objectives: To describe caregiver contribution (CC) to ostomy self‐care and identify its associated variables among caregivers of ostomy patients. Background: Self‐care is essential for ostomy patients, but it can be difficult to perform. In these cases, caregivers play a key role in promoting self‐care behaviours. So far, the CC to ostomy self‐care has not been investigated thoroughly. Design: This is a cross‐sectional and multicentre study conducted at seven outpatient clinics of two Italian regions. Methods: We recruited 252 caregivers between February 2017–May 2018. The Caregiver Contribution to Ostomy Self‐Care Index (CC‐OSCI) was used to measure CC to ostomy self‐care. Three multivariable linear regression models were fitted to identify variables associated with CC dimensions (maintenance, monitoring and management). The STROBE checklist was used to report the present study. Results: The sample (mean age = 58.73, SD = 13.98) was mostly female (80.60%), unemployed (58.70%) and resided with the patient (81.00%). Caregivers being employed and those declaring more hours of contribution per week were associated with a significantly lower contribution to self‐care maintenance. Caregivers with lower levels of education and those residing with the patient were less likely to contribute to CC to self‐care monitoring. Spousal caregivers and those with higher preparedness contributed significantly lower to CC to self‐care management. Conclusions: We found a variety of sociodemographic factors associated with CC to ostomy self‐care. Relevance to clinical practice: Sociodemographic variables associated with CC to ostomy self‐care can help clinicians develop more tailored educational interventions for caregivers who find their contribution challenging. Aims and objectives: To describe the sociodemographic and academic characteristics of nursing students who report academic failure and to identify the determinants of academic failure (no degree on time) in a population of nursing students. Background: Although prior studies have shown that academic failure is influenced by multiple factors, the studies mentioned have mostly focused on specific single variables associated with academic failure, and they have reported inconsistent results. Design: A prospective follow‐up study design was used in an Italian Baccalaureate Nursing Degree program. A total sample of 2,040 at baseline and a random subsample of 753 students were considered for academic failure determinants. The study followed the recommendations of STROBE (Strengthening the Reporting of Observational studies in Epidemiology). Methods: We included in the model academic background, self‐efficacy, sociodemographic variables and self‐efficacy in psychomotor skills and motivation. We used the Academic Nurse Self‐Efficacy Scale (ANSEs), the Nursing Self‐Efficacy in Psychomotor Skill Scale (NSE‐PS) and the Motivation Nursing Students' Scale (MNSS) which have been validated on nursing students. For the assessment of predictors of academic failure, a two‐stage hierarchical logistic regression analysis was performed. Results: Students who had academic failure were 69.4% of the sample. Predictors of academic failure were the secondary school certification grade, the university pre‐admission test score; the academic self‐efficacy, self‐efficacy in psychomotor skills and clinical training examination grades were additional predictors. Conclusions: The secondary school certification grade, the University pre‐admission test score, low academic self‐efficacy, low self‐efficacy in psychomotor skills and low clinical training examination grades were predictors of academic failure in nursing students. Relevance to clinical practice: Our findings suggest that the universities could consider a cut‐off in the pre‐admission test score as a critical value for identifying students who are likely to fail. Aim and objectives: To assess the prevalence of anxiety, sleep disorders and self‐efficacy and their predicting factors among nurses facing COVID‐19. Background: The spread of COVID‐19 throughout the world determined a series of modifications of several National Health Service organisations, with a potential series of psychological consequences among nurses, who were particularly afflicted by this situation of changes and precariousness. Design: A cross‐sectional study was carried out from February–April 2020. Methods: A total of 1,005 nurses employed in different Italian hospital wards, during the COVID‐19 pandemic, were recruited. Analyses were based on descriptive statistics and multivariate logistic regression. The STROBE checklist for cross‐sectional studies was used in this study. Results: The prevalence of sleep disturbances, moderate anxiety and low self‐efficacy was 71.4%, 33.23% and 50.65%, respectively. We found a positive correlation between anxiety and sleep quality (0.408; p <.0001) and negative correlations between self‐efficacy and anxiety (−0.217; p <.0001) and sleep quality and self‐efficacy (−0.134; p <.0001). The factor independently associated with all variables was gender. Females were more prone to sleep disturbances, anxiety and low levels of self‐efficacy than males (p <.05). Conclusions: The prevalence of anxiety, sleep disorders and low self‐efficacy among Italian nurses during the COVID‐19 pandemic was high. Healthcare managers should recognise and consider these results to reduce the risk of the onset of major mental problems that could result in post‐traumatic stress disorder. Relevance to clinical practice: Nurses facing major incidents as COVID‐19 pandemic are among healthcare personnel exposed to a high risk to develop psychological disturbance that should be assessed and recognised, in order to find helpful coping strategies to inform support services and avoid to hesitate in post‐traumatic stress disorders. Aim: The Self‐Care Self‐Efficacy Scale (SCSES) was newly developed as a self‐report measure for self‐care self‐efficacy for chronic illness. This study investigated its measurement equivalence (ME) in different cultural groups, including United States, China (Hong Kong), Italy, and Brazil. Design: A multi‐national study for cross‐cultural validation of the Scale. Methods: From January 2015 ‐ December 2018, investigators recruited 957 patients (United State: 200; Hong Kong: 300; Italy: 285; and Brazil: 142) with chronic illness from inpatient and outpatient settings. The SCSES was administered and clinical and demographic data were collected from participants. Based on the Meredith framework, multi‐group confirmatory factor analysis evaluated the configural, metric, scalar, and strict invariance of the scale across the four populations through a series of nested models, with evaluation of reliability and coherence of the factor solution. Results: The mean ages of the groups ranged from 65–77 years, 56.4% was male. The Cronbach's alpha coefficients of the single‐factor SCSES were 0.93, 0.89, 0.92, and 0.90 for the United States, China (Hong Kong), Italy, and Brazil, respectively. Three of the four levels of ME were partially or totally supported. The highest level achieved was partial scalar invariance level (χ2 [52] = 313.4, p < 0.001; RMSEA = 0.067; 95% CI = 0.056–0.077; CFI = 0.966; TLI = 0.960, SRMR = 0.080). Conclusion: Patients from the four countries shared the same philosophical orientation towards scale items, although some of the items contributed differently to represent the concept and participants shared the same schemata for score interpretation. Impact: Self‐efficacy is important in producing effective and sustainable self‐care behavioural changes. Cultural ideation shapes the ways individuals interpret and report their self‐care self‐efficacy. Background: Because of the importance of a dyadic approach, it is necessary to conduct a systematic review to identify which dyadic intervention could be implemented for stroke survivor–caregiver dyads after discharge from the rehabilitation hospital to improve outcomes. Aims: The aims were to systematically review the evidence to identify which dyadic interventions have been implemented in stroke survivor–caregiver dyads to improve stroke survivor–caregiver dyads' outcomes and to analyse, through a meta-analysis, which intervention was found to be the most effective. Methods: A systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted using the following electronic databases: PubMed, CINAHL and PsycInfo. Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and quasi-RCT studies published within the last 10 years were included. Quantitative data were extracted from papers included in the review using the standardized data extraction tool from JBI-MAStARI. Pooled effects were analysed between the experimental and control groups for each outcome. Results: Sixteen studies involving 2997 stroke survivors (male gender=58%) and 2187 caregivers (male gender=25%) were included in this review. In 16 studies, which were subdivided into three quasi-RCTs and 13 RCTs, the application of dyadic interventions for stroke survivors and caregivers was systematically reviewed, but only a few of these identified a significant improvement in the stroke survivors' and caregivers' outcomes of its intervention group. Dyadic interventions showed a significant effect on stroke survivors' physical functioning (p =0.05), memory (p <0.01) and quality of life (p =0.01) and on caregivers' depression (p =0.05). Conclusions: This study provides moderate support for the use of a dyadic intervention to improve stroke survivors' physical functioning, memory and quality of life and caregiver depression. Background: An increasing number of patients worldwide are living with an ostomy. Among them, self-care management skills and stoma self-care abilities are associated with better quality of life. Aims: To identify the sociodemographic and clinical characteristics of Italian ostomy patients and investigate their knowledge of stoma management. Methods: A questionnaire was used to gather the sociodemographic and clinical data of 433 adult patients. Participants responded to a nine-item survey assessing their knowledge of stoma management. Findings: Respondents reported having received extensive or adequate information in 64.4% of cases, and the remaining 35.6% reported receiving little or no information at any time. The health professional who imparted at least adequate information was a stoma nurse specialist in 32.1% of cases, usually during admission (24.0%) or before and during admission (19.6%). Introduction: Although preventive health and therapeutics have benefited from advances in drug development and device innovation, translating these evidence-based treatments into real-world practice remains challenging. Aim: The current integrative review aims to identify facilitators and barriers and perceptions in delivering and managing injectable therapies from patient perspectives. Methods: An integrative review was conducted in the databases of PubMed, CINAHL, PsycINFO and Cochrane. Keywords were used "Injectable therapy", "IV therapy", "SC therapy", "long term injectable therapies", "self-administered injectable therapy", "patients", "caregivers", "family", "carers", "facilitators", "barriers", "perspectives", "needs", "expectations", "chronic disease", "cardiovascular disease" linked with the words "OR" and "AND". The search was limited from January 2000 to July 2019. Inclusion and exclusion criteria were used. Results: Twenty studies were identified from the literature search. Studies followed qualitative, quantitative methodology and mixed methods. Facilitators included: health improvement, prevention of disease complications, taking control of their disease, effectiveness of the medication and convenience in management. Barriers included: fear of needles, insulin will cause harm, poor perception of the benefits of injectable therapies on their quality of life, inconvenience in self-management, social stigma, impact on daily living, financial barriers, lack of education. Perceptions included: 'treatment of last resort', 'life becomes less flexible', 'injectables were punishment/restriction', 'personal failure of self-management'. Conclusion: Evidence shows how to create effective communication and shared decision-making relationships to provide best possible care to patients who need injectable therapy and support for self-management. Aims: To describe self‐care in ostomy patients, to identify socio‐demographic and clinical variables associated with self‐care and to identify the association between self‐care self‐efficacy and self‐care over and above the variables associated with self‐care. Design: Longitudinal and multicentre study. Data were collected between February 2017‐May 2018. Methods: In this study, 523 ostomy patients were enrolled at baseline (T0) and 362 were followed‐up after 6 months (T1). The Ostomy Self‐Care Index was used to measure self‐care maintenance, monitoring, management, and self‐efficacy. Correlations between self‐care dimensions and patient socio‐demographic and clinical characteristics were performed with Pearson's or Spearman's correlations. Three separate two‐step hierarchical regression analyses were performed to identify variables associated with self‐care maintenance, monitoring, and management. Results: Participants' mean age was 69 years (SD 12.4); 63.9% were male and most had enterostomies (38.8% colostomies, 29.3% ileostomies) and permanent ostomies (72.5%). Patients had adequate self‐care maintenance and monitoring at T0 and T1, while they had lower self‐care management and self‐efficacy at baseline. Significant variables associated with better self‐care maintenance and self‐care monitoring were female gender, more information received during hospitalization and better autonomy in stoma management, while a better level of education was an additional variable associated with self‐care monitoring. Self‐care self‐efficacy produced a significant increase in the explained variance of self‐care maintenance and self‐care monitoring. None of the selected variables were significantly associated with self‐care management. Conclusion: Middle‐high levels of self‐care maintenance, monitoring, management, and self‐efficacy were found. The variables associated with ostomy self‐care and the role of self‐care self‐efficacy identified in this study can help in developing tailored nursing interventions. Aims: To investigate the relationship between depression and self‐care behaviours in older individuals with multimorbidity. Design: Cross‐sectional study. Data were collected between April 2017 – June 2019. Methods: Patients were enrolled from community and outpatient settings and included if they were ≥65 years, affected by heart failure, diabetes mellitus or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and at least another chronic condition. They were excluded if they had dementia and/or cancer. Patient Health Questionnaire‐9 was used to measure depression and Self‐Care of Chronic Illness Inventory was used to measure self‐care maintenance, monitoring, and management. The relationship between depression and self‐care was evaluated by performing two sets of univariate analyses, followed by multivariate and step‐down analyses. The second set was performed to control for the number of chronic conditions, age, and cognitive function. Results: The sample (N = 366) was mostly female (54.2%), with a mean age of 76.4 years. Most participants (65.6%) had mild to very severe depressive symptoms. Preliminary analysis indicated a significant negative association between depression and self‐care maintenance and monitoring and a significant negative association between depression and multivariate self‐care. Step‐down analysis showed that self‐care maintenance was the only dimension negatively associated with depression, even after controlling for the number of chronic conditions, age, and cognitive function. Conclusion: In multimorbid populations, depression is more likely to be associated with self‐care maintenance than the other self‐care dimensions. Therefore, self‐care maintenance behaviours (e.g., physical activity and medication adherence) should be prioritized in assessment and focused on when developing interventions targeting depressed older adults with multimorbidity. Impact: The results of this study may help guide clinical practice. Background: The burden is high in caregivers of heart failure patients, but the literature on patient and caregiver predictors of caregiver burden is inconsistent. Also, it is unknown if caregiver contribution to heart failure self-care maintenance (i.e. helping patients to maintain heart failure stable) and self-care management (i.e. helping patients to act in case of heart failure worsening) increases caregiver burden. Aims: To identify caregiver and patient predictors of caregiver burden in heart failure; and to evaluate if caregiver contribution to heart failure self-care maintenance and management increases caregiver burden. Methods: A cross-sectional study with the enrolment of 505 caregivers of heart failure patients. We used the caregiver burden inventory and the caregiver contribution to self-care of heart failure index. We analysed the data using hierarchical regression. Results: Heart failure caregivers, mostly women (52.5%), with a mean age 56.5 (±14.9) years, cared for heart failure patients, mostly men (55.2%), with a mean age of 75.9 (±10.4) years. Caregiver predictors of higher caregiver burden were older age, female gender, fewer caregiving hours and poor social support. Patient predictors of higher caregiver burden were older age, better education, taking fewer medications and higher quality of life. Caregiver contribution to self-care maintenance and management were not significant predictors of caregiver burden. Conclusions: Our results could help providers to identify heart failure caregivers who are more exposed to burden. As caregiver contribution to heart failure self-care improves patient outcomes and seems not burdensome for caregivers, providers may consider educating caregivers about self-care as a viable option for improving patient outcomes without increasing caregiver burden. Background: The Heart Failure Somatic Perception Scale (HFSPS) is a four-factor instrument used to assess how bothersome are 18 physical signs and symptoms of heart failure. To date, construct validity and reliability of the HFSPS have been evaluated in only one American study and never in a European population. Aim: To evaluate psychometric properties (validity and reliability) of the HFSPS in a European heart failure population. Methods: This was an Italian multicentre study in which the HFSPS factorial structure was assessed using confirmatory factor analysis. Criterion related validity of the HFSPS was evaluated by correlating its factor scores with the Kansas City Cardiomyopathy Questionnaire (KCCQ) scores using Pearson's r. The HFSPS internal consistency reliability was evaluated using the factor score determinacy coefficient, Cronbach's α and model-based internal consistency index. Results: Most of the participants (n =321) were male (56.6%), with a mean age of 71.48 years (SD, 12.75) and in New York Heart Association class II (61.8%). The confirmatory factor analysis, testing the original HFSPS four-factor structure (dyspnoea, chest discomfort, early and subtle, and oedema), resulted in the following supportive fit indices: χ2 (126, N =321)=337.612, p <0.001, comparative fit index =0.920, Tucker–Lewis index =0.903, root mean square error of approximation =0.072 and standardized root mean square residual =0.045. With regard to the criterion related validity, all the correlations with the KCCQ were statistically significant. The HFSPS reliability resulted in factor score determinacy coefficients ⩾ 0.87 and Cronbach's α ⩾ 0.75, with the exception of the two-item chest discomfort subscale; the model-based reliability coefficient was 0.914. Conclusion: The validity and reliability of the HFSPS were supportive in this European sample. Abstract: Aims: To identify clusters of nurses in relation to their beliefs about nursing diagnosis among two populations (Italian and Spanish); to investigate differences among clusters of nurses in each population considering the nurses' socio‐demographic data, attitudes towards nursing diagnosis, intentions to make nursing diagnosis and actual behaviours in making nursing diagnosis. Background: Nurses' beliefs concerning nursing diagnosis can influence its use in practice but this is still unclear. Design: A cross‐sectional design. Methods: A convenience sample of nurses in Italy and Spain was enrolled. Data were collected between 2014‐2015 using tools, that is, a socio‐demographic questionnaire and behavioural, normative and control beliefs, attitudes, intentions and behaviours scales. Results: The sample included 499 nurses (272 Italians & 227 Spanish). Of these, 66.5% of the Italian and 90.7% of the Spanish sample were female. The mean age was 36.5 and 45.2 years old in the Italian and Spanish sample respectively. Six clusters of nurses were identified in Spain and four in Italy. Three clusters were similar among the two populations. Similar significant associations between age, years of work, attitudes towards nursing diagnosis, intentions to make nursing diagnosis and behaviours in making nursing diagnosis and cluster membership in each population were identified. Conclusion: Belief profiles identified unique subsets of nurses that have distinct characteristics. Categorizing nurses by belief patterns may help administrators and educators to tailor interventions aimed at improving nursing diagnosis use in practice. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Self-care is essential for patients with diabetes mellitus. Both clinicians and researchers must be able to assess the quality of that self-care. Available tools have various limitations and none are theoretically based. The aims of this study were to develop and to test the psychometric properties of a new instrument based on the middle range-theory of self-care of chronic illness: the Self-Care of Diabetes Inventory (SCODI). Methods: Forty SCODI items (5 point Likert type scale) were developed based on clinical recommendations and grouped into 4 dimensions: self-care maintenance, self-care monitoring, self-care management and self-care confidence based on the theory. Content validity was assessed by a multidisciplinary panel of experts. A multicentre cross-sectional study was conducted in a consecutive sample of 200 type 1 and type 2 diabetes patients. Dimensionality was evaluated by exploratory factor analyses. Multidimensional model based reliability was estimated for each scale. Multiple regression models estimating associations between SCODI scores and glycated haemoglobin (HbA1c), body mass index, and diabetes complications, were used for construct validity. Results: Content validity ratio was 100%. A multidimensional structure emerged for the 4 scales. Multidimensional model-based reliabilities were between 0.81 (maintenance) and 0.89 (confidence). Significant associations were found between self-care maintenance and HbA1c (p = 0.02) and between self-care monitoring and diabetes complications (p = 0.04). Self-care management was associated with BMI (p = 0.004) and diabetes complications (p = 0.03). Self-care confidence was a significant predictor of self-care maintenance, monitoring and management (all p < 0.0001). Aims To describe the prevalence of nursing diagnoses on admission among inpatient units and medical diagnoses and to analyse the relationship of nursing diagnoses to patient characteristics and hospital outcomes. Background Nursing diagnoses classify patients according to nursing dependency and can be a measure of nursing complexity. Knowledge regarding the prevalence of nursing diagnoses on admission and their relationship with hospital outcomes is lacking. Design Prospective observational study. Methods Data were collected for 6 months in 2014 in four inpatient units of an Italian hospital using a nursing information system and the hospital discharge register. Nursing diagnoses with prevalence higher or equal to 20% were considered as 'high frequency.' Nursing diagnoses with statistically significant relationships with either higher mortality or length of stay were considered as 'high risk.' The high-frequency/high-risk category of nursing diagnoses was identified. Results The sample included 2283 patients. A mean of 4·5 nursing diagnoses per patient was identified; this number showed a statistically significant difference among inpatient units and medical diagnoses. Six nursing diagnoses were classified as high frequency/high risk. Nursing diagnoses were not correlated with patient gender and age. A statistically significant perfect linear association (Spearman's correlation coefficient) was observed between the number of nursing diagnoses and both the length of stay and the mortality rate. Conclusion Nursing complexity, as described by nursing diagnoses, was shown to be associated with length of stay and mortality. These results should be confirmed after considering other variables through multivariate analyses. The concept of high-frequency/high-risk nursing diagnoses should be expanded in further studies. Background: A better understanding of caregiver burden and its determinants is essential to support caregivers. Many instruments have been developed to measure caregiver burden in various illness contexts, but few have been psychometrically tested for caregivers of heart failure patients. Aims: The aim of this study was to test the validity (factorial and concurrent validity) and reliability (internal consistency) of the caregiver burden inventory (CBI) in a cohort of caregivers of heart failure patients. Methods: This was a secondary analysis from a cross-sectional study on heart failure patients and their caregivers enrolled from various Italian outpatient centres. The factorial validity of the CBI was tested with confirmatory factor analysis, and concurrent validity was tested correlating CBI scores with the short form-12 health survey scores. The internal consistency reliability was assessed with Cronbach’s alpha. Results: In total, 505 caregivers of heart failure patients (52.2% women, mean age 56.59±14.9 years) were enrolled. Confirmatory factor analyses confirmed the original five-factor model: time-dependence, developmental, physical, social and emotional burden. This model fits the data better than the single-factor model, and the dimensions showed high internal consistency reliability (Cronbach’s alpha 0.91 for time-dependence burden, 0.92 for developmental burden, 0.88 for physical burden, 0.89 for social burden and 0.93 for emotional burden; 0.96 for the total score of burden). Conclusion: The CBI proved to be a good multidimensional instrument for evaluating the burden in caregivers of heart failure patients and can be used in clinical practice and research. Purpose To evaluate the psychometric properties of the D-Catch instrument. Methods A cross-sectional methodological study. Validity and reliability were estimated with confirmatory factor analysis ( CFA) and internal consistency and inter-rater reliability, respectively. Findings A sample of 250 nursing documentations was selected. CFA showed the adequacy of a 1-factor model (chronologically descriptive accuracy) with an outlier item (nursing diagnosis accuracy). Internal consistency and inter-rater reliability were adequate. Conclusions The D-Catch is a valid and reliable instrument for measuring the accuracy of nursing documentation. Caution is needed when measuring diagnostic accuracy since only one item measures this dimension. Implications for Nursing Practice The D-Catch can be used as an indicator of the accuracy of nursing documentation and the quality of nursing care. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aim To test an explanatory model of nurses' intention to report adverse drug reactions in hospital settings, based on the theory of planned behaviour. Background Under-reporting of adverse drug reactions is an important problem among nurses. Methods A cross-sectional design was used. Data were collected with the adverse drug reporting nurses' questionnaire. Confirmatory factor analysis was performed to test the factor validity of the adverse drug reporting nurses' questionnaire, and structural equation modelling was used to test the explanatory model. Results The convenience sample comprised 500 Italian hospital nurses (mean age = 43.52). Confirmatory factor analysis supported the factor validity of the adverse drug reporting nurses' questionnaire. The structural equation modelling showed a good fit with the data. Nurses' intention to report adverse drug reactions was significantly predicted by attitudes, subjective norms and perceived behavioural control ( R² = 0.16). Conclusions The theory of planned behaviour effectively explained the mechanisms behind nurses' intention to report adverse drug reactions, showing how several factors come into play. Implications for nursing management In a scenario of organisational empowerment towards adverse drug reaction reporting, the major predictors of the intention to report are support for the decision to report adverse drug reactions from other health care practitioners, perceptions about the value of adverse drug reaction reporting and nurses' favourable self-assessment of their adverse drug reaction reporting skills. Aim To describe a research protocol designed to formulate a conceptual framework of informal caregiver resilience in palliative care. Background Resilience is the ability to adapt or to improve one's own conditions following experiences of adversity. The end-of-life care provided by informal caregivers is a form of adversity because it entails objective difficulties, emotional involvement and deep levels of introspection that have been stimulated by the death event. Resilience has not yet been addressed in association with end-of-life care. Design This is a multicentre cross-sectional study. Methods We will administer a questionnaire to a sample of informal end-of-life caregivers to collect data about the main psychological, behavioural and healthcare factors that impact resilience. Data analysis will include descriptive and correlational statistical techniques, multiple linear regressions and structural equation modelling. Data will be collected in multiple palliative care centres and statistical analysis will be carried out using software: SPSS version 19.0 and MPlus version 7.3. The study is supported by a grant from the Centre of Excellence for Nursing Scholarship in Italy (Research Grant number 2.13.10) that was awarded in March 2013. Discussion The study seeks to identify the predictive, mediating and moderating roles of select variables: caregivers' self-efficacy, burdens of caregiving, depression and resilience. The results of this analysis will impact the theoretical study of resilience in palliative care and will have practical implications for interventions aimed at supporting caregivers through healthcare teams.
