The article presents information on the 1970 Fall Joint Computer Conference that will be held in Houston, Texas, on November 17-19. The conference will have a truly Texas-sized setting, the Astrohall, the world's largest convention and exhibit structure. The technical program may also appear to be Texas-sized in view of its size and diversity. However, it is not so much the program that has grown as the computer industry. The program has therefore been expanded to reflect new developments in computer usage and technology while maintaining its emphasis on various subjects of continuing importance. One of the chief areas of interest is computer software, its present problems and future promises. Two sessions will be devoted on it. Session 21, chaired by M.A. Melkanoff, University of California at Los Angeles, is devoted to the three principal and self-excluding approaches to long-range programming language development being advocated today. A distinguished panel will present a position paper on each of the three approaches and a fourth position paper on relevant research problems.

A conference specific to the education and training of clinical neuropsychology was held in 1997, which led to a report published in the Archives of Clinical Neuropsychology (Hannay, J., Bieliauskas, L., Crosson, B., Hammeke, T., Hamsher, K., & Koffler, S. (1998). Proceedings of the Houston Conference on Specialty Education and Training in Clinical Neuropsychology. Archives of Clinical Neuropsychology, 13, 157–250.). The guidelines produced by this conference have been referred to as the Houston Conference (HC) guidelines. Since that time, there has been considerable discussion, and some disagreement, about whether the HC guidelines produced a positive outcome in the training of neuropsychologists. To explore this question and determine how widely the HC guidelines were implemented, a meeting was held in 2006. Present and past leaders of the American Psychological Association Division 40 (Clinical Neuropsychology), the National Academy of Neuropsychology, and the Association of Postdoctoral Programs in Clinical Neuropsychology met to discuss the possible need for an Inter-Organizational Summit on Education and Training (ISET). A decision was reached to have the ISET Steering Committee conduct a survey of clinical neuropsychologists that could address the extent to which HC guidelines were present in the specialty and whether the influence of the HC guidelines was positive. An online survey was constructed, with data gathered in 2010. The current paper presents and discusses the ISET survey results. Specific findings need to be viewed cautiously due to the relatively low response rate. However, with some direct parallels to a larger recent survey of clinical neuropsychologists, the following general conclusions appear well founded: (a) the demographics of respondents in the ISET survey are comparable with a recent larger professional practice survey and thus may reasonably represent the specialty; (b) the HC guidelines appear to have been widely adopted by training programs, in that a large proportion of younger practitioners endorsed having had HC-adherent training; and (c) HC-adherent training is associated with a higher frequency endorsement of being well prepared to engage in key professional activities subsequent to the completion of training when compared with those not having HC-adherent training. Overall, the ISET Steering Committee has concluded that the HC guidelines have been widely adopted and that trainees associate participation in HC-adherent training as advantageous. A potential revision based on unfavorable outcomes is deemed unnecessary. Nonetheless, the ISET Steering Committee recognizes that training needs change as a function of the broadening of our field and the introduction of related new technologies, which may prompt updates. The ISET Steering Committee supports the idea that periodic review and updating of training models may be is prudent. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article discusses a paper selected for presentation at the 2010 Offshore Technology Conference (OTC) which was held in Houston, Texas, on May 3-6, 2010. The paper focuses on the development of the Azurite marine field, which was installed in the Republic of Congo, as a way of providing context for evolution of the Floating, Drilling, Production, Storage and Offloading (FDPSO) concept and also highlights other applications for FDPSOs. The Azurite field started producing offshore and employed the industry's FDPSO vessel to develop the field.

This article reports that the 1982 National Computer Conference (NCC) lived up to its theme of "Advancing Professionalism" as a record-breaking crowd of over 93,000 jammed the Astrohall and Astroarena in Houston, Texas to attend the technical sessions led by well-known experts and to see the latest in computer products, services, and publications. According to general chairman Russell K. Brown, the conference was designed to be of interest to everyone in academia industry, and government users and designers, professionals and hobbyists. The 86 technical sessions were organized into eight tracks: hardware and computer architecture; software engineering; personal computing; social and organizational implications; office systems; decision support and management issues; language and database processing; and applications. Howard L. Morgan, NCC program chairman, noted that the wide spectrum of sessions, panels, and papers provided coverage of all major aspects of the field.

This article presents information on the technical meetings and workshops held by a number of Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) Special Interest Groups and Committees during the Fall 1970 Joint Computer Conference in Houston, Texas. Among the more ambitious ACM-related events held in Houston was an evening panel session on Social Implications of Computer Technology. Sponsorship support came jointly from the ACM Special Interest Committee on Computers and Society, the Social Implications Committee of the IEEE Computer Group, and the AFIPS Social Implications Committee. The high caliber of the panelists was matched by that of the discussion which took place during the session. Shortly before the ACM Council authorized its conversion into a Group, the Special Interest Committee on File Description and Translation brought together representatives from commerce, industry, government and universities, meeting to exchange technical information on data description and access. Papers and discussions alike reflected interests going from the theoretical to the practical, and efforts ranging from individual projects to large committee undertakings.

Information about several papers discussed at the Lunar and Planetary Science Conference, held from March 13-17, 2006, in Houston, Texas, is presented. In all their excitement over a watery geyser on Saturn's little satellite Enceladus, the media overlooked a geophysical oddity. At the meeting, two planetary scientists suggested an answer: An imbalance in Enceladus's innards may have rolled the moon over to bring the geysering down there. If so, they may have found a solution to a 25-year mystery on Uranus as well. Contrary to intuition, spinning planetary bodies need not spin like a perfect top forever.

Information about several papers discussed at the Lunar and Planetary Science Conference, held from March 13-17, 2006, in Houston, Texas, is presented. Deep Impact scientists have figured out why they couldn't see the crater formed last July when they smashed a nearly half-ton "bullet" into comet Tempel l. Team members compared the plumes of debris blown off Tempel 1 with ejecta from laboratory impact experiments, and they simulated debris trajectories under a comet's feeble gravity. Both approaches indicate that the dirty snowball at the heart of Tempel 1 is mostly empty space.
