This study analyzed the use of fifteen groups of digital tools that 197 active teachers made during the sudden shift to remote instruction due to the COVID-19 quarantine orders placed by various health departments in Spain and the United States. The study also examined the impact that the use of digital tools had on teachers' perceived self-efficacy. A quantitative research design was used, supported by an exploratory descriptive approach that materializes in the application of an online questionnaire during the spring of 2020. The results indicate that perceived self-efficacy differs from country of origin and is conditioned by sociodemographic variables such as the training received and type of center. It is noted that teachers in Spain prefer the use of Moodle or Escholarium over that of teachers in the United States that opted for Google Classroom as a primary platform for teaching online, and the frequency of use of digital tools analyzed does not guarantee that their implementation is effective. Inactive carrier phases in chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection present minimal liver disease and HBV replication activity suggesting partial immune reconstitution, although the mechanisms responsible remain elusive. Moreover, hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) production-hypothesized to modulate the immune response-is unaltered. In the current study, we assessed the intrahepatic transcriptome in inactive carriers of HBV versus healthy liver donors, including in the context of diverse HBsAg levels (serum and liver), to better understand the phenomenon of immune control. We found a deregulated liver transcriptome in inactive carriers compared with healthy controls, despite normal liver function. Moreover, diverse HBsAg levels have minimal impact on the liver transcriptome in inactive carriers, although gene correlation analysis revealed that leukocyte activation, recruitment, and innate responses genes were correlated with liver HBsAg levels. These findings provide more insight into the mechanisms underlying anti-HBV strategies currently under development, aimed at interfering with HBsAg production or inducing a state of immune control. Patients with a dementia diagnosis and COVID-19 sometimes manifest an atypical clinical picture. However, differences between elderly COVID-19 patients having dementia and those not having dementia have not been described yet. The in-hospital mortality and out-of-hospital mortality from both groups has not been reported. The primary aim of this study is to determine if there is a significant difference in-hospital and out-of-hospital mortality in the elderly patients admitted for COVID-19, comparing those with dementia and those without dementia. A secondary aim is to determine whether there are significant clinical and laboratory differences between elderly COVID-19 patients with dementia and without dementia. Data collection of hospitalizations of elderly patients aged 70 years old or older admitted for COVID-19 in 2020 at the Hospital de San Juan de Alicante. In-hospital mortality in a context of admission for COVID-19 is significantly higher in patients with out dementia. However, post-discharge out-of-hospital mortality is significantly higher in patients with dementia. The out-of-hospital mortality of elderly patients with dementia appears to be significantly higher than those who do not. Objective: To assess whether higher adherence to the traditional Mediterranean diet (MedDiet) was associated with lower consumption of ultra-processed foods (UPF) and lower free sugar intake.Design: Cross-sectional analysis of baseline information among participants in the SENDO project, a Spanish paediatric cohort. Dietary information was collected through a semi-quantitative FFQ. Food items were classified according to the NOVA classification. Adherence to the MedDiet was evaluated through the KIDMED index.Setting: Spain.Participants: Three hundred eight-six children (52 % boys) with a mean age of 5·3 years old (sd 1·0) were included in the analysis.Results: 74·4 % of the children had moderate adherence to the MedDiet (mean KIDMED score: 5·9 points; sd 1·7) and overall, 32·2 % of the total energy intake came from UPF. Each two additional points in the KIDMED score was associated with 3·1 % (95 % CI 2·1, 4·0) lower energy intake from UPF. Compared to those with low adherence to the MedDiet, children with medium and high adherence reported 5·0 % (95 % CI 2·2, 7·7) and 8·5 % (95 % CI 5·2, 11·9) lower energy intake from UPF, respectively. We also found that 71·6 % of the variability in free sugar intake was explained by the variability in UPF consumption.Conclusions: Adherence to the traditional MedDiet was inversely associated with energy intake from UPF. Furthermore, most of the variability in free sugar intake was explained by the variability of UPF consumption. Background: Circadian rhythm disturbance is commonly observed in Alzheimer's disease (AD). In mammals, these rhythms are orchestrated by the superchiasmatic nucleus (SCN). Our previous study in the Tg2576 AD mouse model suggests that inflammatory responses, most likely manifested by low GABA production, may be one of the underlying perpetrators for the changes in circadian rhythmicity and sleep disturbance in AD. However, the mechanistic connections between SCN dysfunction, GABA modulation, and inflammation in AD is not fully understood.Objective: To reveal influences of amyloid pathology in Tg2576 mouse brain on metabolism in SCN and to identify key metabolic sensors that couple SCN dysfunction with GABA modulation and inflammation.Methods: High resolution magic angle spinning (HR-MAS) NMR in conjunction with multivariate analysis was applied for metabolic profiling in SCN of control and Tg2576 female mice. Immunohistochemical analysis was used to detect neurons, astrocytes, expression of GABA transporter 1 (GAT1) and Bmal1.Results: Metabolic profiling revealed significant metabolic deficits in SCN of Tg2576 mice. Reductions in glucose, glutamate, GABA, and glutamine provide hints toward an impaired GABAergic glucose oxidation and neurotransmitter cycling in SCN of AD mice. In addition, decreased redox co-factor NADPH and glutathione support a redox disbalance. Immunohistochemical examinations showed low expression of the core clock protein, Bmal1, especially in activated astrocytes. Moreover, decreased expression of GAT1 in astrocytes indicates low GABA recycling in this cell type.Conclusion: Our results suggest that redox disbalance and compromised GABA signaling are important denominators and connectors between neuroinflammation and clock dysfunction in AD. Psychology Doctoral Students (PDS) have to deal with highly emotional situations with their clients and academic demands that can cause stress. However, there is limited research examining stress and burnout in PDS. This study aimed to examine levels of stress in PDS students compared to the general population and to analyze levels of stress and burnout per year in the program. An online survey was distributed among both PDS currently enrolled in APA-accredited clinical and counseling psychology doctoral programs and individuals in the general population. A total of 204 (67.3%) participants were PDS and 99 (32.7%) were from the general population. There were no significant differences in levels of stress between the PDS and participants from the general population. Third- and fourth-year students (grouped together) reported a significantly higher level of stress than PDS in other years (p=.00). Similarly, third- and fourth-year students (grouped together) reported significantly higher scores in the burnout emotional exhaustion subscale, than the rest of the students (p=.04). Stress levels in PDS were similar to those in the general population. Objective: To compare response to rituximab (RTX) between adult patients positive for myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein (MOG) and aquaporin-4 (AQP4) antibodies.Methods: We prospectively studied adult patients with MOG or AQP4 antibodies who received RTX under an individualized dosing schedule adapted to the biological effect of RTX monitored by memory B-cell measurement. Memory B cells were counted monthly and when relapse occurred. The biological effect of RTX was considered significant with <0.05% memory B cells in peripheral blood lymphocytes.Results: In 16 patients with MOG antibodies and 29 with AQP4 antibodies, mean follow-up was 19 (range = 9-38) and 38 (13-79) months. Under RTX, 10 relapses occurred in 6 of 16 (37.5%) patients with MOG antibodies, and 13 occurred in 7 of 29 (24%) with AQP4 antibodies. The median time of relapse after the most recent infusion was 2.6 (0.6-5.8) and 7 (0.8-13) months, respectively (p < 0.001). Memory B cells had reemerged in 2 of 10 (20%) relapses in patients with MOG antibodies and 12 of 13 (92.5%) with AQP4 antibodies (p < 0.001).Interpretation: In AQP4 antibody-associated disorder, relapse mostly occurs when the biological effect of RTX decreases, which argues for treatment efficacy. In MOG antibody-associated disorder, the efficacy of RTX is not constant, because one-third of patients showed relapse despite an effective biological effect of RTX. In this subpopulation, memory B-cell depletion was unable to prevent relapse, which was probably caused by different immunological mechanisms. Purpose: The aim of the current study is to assess, using new technologies, the interaction of four monthly silicone hydrogel contact lenses on the ocular surface and the comfort over 15 days of use.Methods: Prospective cross-over, randomized and double-masked study including four materials (lotrafilcon-B, samfilcon-A , comfilcon-A and filcom-V3). Clinical examination was performed in the following order: tear meniscus height, first break-up of the tear film, the average time of all tear film breakup incidents, bulbar redness, limbal redness (Keratograph 5M ,Oculus, Germany); central corneal thickness (Pentacam, Oculus, Germany), thermography values (FLIR A325; FLIR Systems Inc., USA), and slit-lamp evaluations, including ocular surface staining. Finally, subjective comfort was obtained from Contact Lens Dry Eye Questionnaire-8.Results: The impact of contact lens wear on the ocular surface didn't show statistically significant changes over time except for corneal and conjunctival staining grades on day 15 compared to day 1 for the comfilcon A group (P = .003 and P = .01, respectively). Contact lens stability and impact on the ocular surface during contact lens wear didn't show statistically significant changes over time except in the case of the comfilcon A material with respect to the irritation item (P = .01).Conclusions: These results suggest that the impact of monthly silicone hydrogel contact lens materials on the ocular surface after and during contact lens wear, contact lens stability over time, and subjective comfort did not reveal any significant changes over 15 days of use for any of the materials. This text presents a research work about the dominant metaphors of diseases in Western society, from the end of the 20th century to the present; we start from the study of the visual artistic practices that have approached this problem. For this, we have developed a critical and comparative analysis of a selection of artistic strategies, and we contrast them with the theoretical contributions of the main experts in the matter. This has allowed us to locate and systematize the main processes of metaphorization in this period; all of them will be defined and encompassed from the otherness. The results achieved have been possible to prove a further strengthening of negative metaphors of the diseases; they are enhanced by the rise of the cult of the healthy body in our society. Background: Increased plasma free fatty acids (FFAs) impair insulin sensitivity in dairy cows via unknown mechanisms. In nonruminants, saturated FFAs upregulate the hepatic synthesis and secretion of ceramide, which inhibits insulin action.Objective: We aimed to determine whether an increase in plasma FFAs promotes hepatic and plasma ceramide accumulation in dairy cows.Methods: Six nonpregnant, nonlactating Holstein cows were used in a study with a crossover design and treatments consisting of intravenous infusion of either saline (control) or triacylglycerol emulsion (TG; 20 g/h) for 16 h. The feeding level was set at 120% of energy requirements. Blood was collected at regular intervals and liver was biopsied at 16 h. Ceramides, monohexosylceramides (Glc/Gal-Cer), lactosylceramides (LacCer), and sphingomyelins (SMs) in plasma and liver were profiled. Hepatic expression of ceramide synthases was determined. Data were analyzed with the use of mixed models, regressions, and Spearman rank correlations.Results: After 16 h of infusion, plasma FFA concentrations were >5-fold and liver triacylglycerol concentrations were 4-fold greater in TG cows, relative to control. Plasma total and very long-chain ceramide (e.g., C24:0-ceramide) concentrations increased ∼4-fold in TG over control by hour 16 of infusion, while C16:0-ceramide were not modified by TG. Infusion of TG increased plasma Glc/Gal-Cer (e.g., C16:0-Glc/Gal-Cer, 4-fold by hour 16) relative to control, but did not alter LacCer or SM concentrations. Hepatic ceramide concentrations increased with TG relative to control (e.g., C24:0-ceramide by 1.7-fold). Hepatic expression of ceramide synthase 2 was 60% greater after TG infusion compared with the control. Circulating ceramides were related to circulating FFA and hepatic triacylglycerol concentrations (e.g., C24:0-ceramide, ρ = 0.73 and 0.80, respectively; P < 0.001).Conclusion: Hepatic ceramide synthesis is associated with elevations in circulating FFAs and hepatic triacylglycerol during the induction of hyperlipidemia in dairy cows. Background: Lightly touching the tip of the index finger on an external surface reduces the postural sway during upright standing due to the additional somatosensory information provided by the touch to the postural control system. But when the individuals apply more force, it provides more mechanical support. However, because most of the studies investigated only two levels of force, whether the control mechanisms of postural sway are affected by the different force levels was unknown.Research Question: To examine the influence of the magnitude of force (up to 1, 2, 4, 6 or 8 N) applied to the touch bar on the mechanisms used to control the postural sway during quiet standing with eyes open or closed.Methods: Ten young right-handed adults stood for 35 s on a force platform, with feet apart, while touched a rigid bar with different force levels with eyes open or closed. The amplitude and velocity of the center of pressure and its components, Rambling and Trembling trajectories, respectively, related to more supraspinal and spinal control mechanisms, were assessed.Results: The touch reduced all trajectories, mainly of the Rambling component and with closed eyes. There was a floor effect of the touch force as amplitudes and velocities were minimal at 4 N of force.Significance: The component of postural sway under the supraspinal neural control is more affected by different force magnitudes applied to the touch bar. Chelidonium majus L. (Papaveraceae) latex is used in traditinonal folk medicine to treat papillae, warts, condylomas, which are visible effects of human papilloma virus (HPV) infections. The aim of this work was to provide new insights into the biology and medicinal use of C. majus milky sap in the flowering and fruit ripening period of the plant by comparing the protein content between samples collected on respective developmental stages using LC-MS-based label-free proteome approach. For quantification, the multiplexed LC-MS data were processed using comparative chemometric approach. Progenesis LC-MS results showed that in green fruit phase (stage IV), comparing to flowering phase (stage III) of plant development, a range of proteins with higher abundance were identified as stress- and defense-related. On the other hand at stage III very intense protein synthesis, processes of transcription, protein folding and active transport of molecules (ABC transporters) are well represented. 2-DE protein maps showed an abundant set of spots with similar MWs (about 30–35 kDa) and pIs (ca. 5.5–6.5), which were identified as major latex proteins (MLPs). Therefore we suggest that biological activity of C. majus latex could be related to its protein content, which shifts during plant development from intense biosynthetic processes (biosynthesis and transport of small molecules, like alkaloids) to plant defense mechanisms against pathogens. Further studies will help to elucidate if these defense-related and pathogenesis-related proteins, like MLP, together with small-molecule compounds, could inhibit viral infection, what could be a step to fully understand the medicinal activity of C. majus latex. In times of global change and intensified resource exploitation, advanced knowledge of ecophysiological processes in natural and engineered systems driven by complex microbial communities is crucial for both safeguarding environmental processes and optimising rational control of biotechnological processes. To gain such knowledge, high-throughput molecular techniques are routinely employed to investigate microbial community composition and dynamics within a wide range of natural or engineered environments. However, for molecular dataset analyses no consensus about a generally applicable alpha diversity concept and no appropriate benchmarking of corresponding statistical indices exist yet. To overcome this, we listed criteria for the appropriateness of an index for such analyses and systematically scrutinised commonly employed ecological indices describing diversity, evenness and richness based on artificial and real molecular datasets. We identified appropriate indices warranting interstudy comparability and intuitive interpretability. The unified diversity concept based on 'effective numbers of types' provides the mathematical framework for describing community composition. Additionally, the Bray-Curtis dissimilarity as a beta-diversity index was found to reflect compositional changes. Purpose. To compare the ocular surface symptoms and signs in an adult population of silicone-hydrogel (Si-Hy) contact lens (CL) wearers with another modality of CL wear, overnight orthokeratology (OK). Materials and Methods. This was a prospective and comparative study in which 31 myopic subjects were fitted with the same Si-Hy CL and 23 underwent OK treatment for 3 months. Dry eye questionnaire (DEQ) was filled in at the beginning of the study and then after 15 days, 1 month, and 3 months using each CL modality. The tear quality was evaluated with noninvasive tear break-up time. Tear production was measured with Schirmer test. Tear samples were collected with Schirmer strips being frozen to analyze the dinucleotide diadenosine tetraphosphate (Ap4A) concentration with High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC). Results. After refitting with ortho-k, a reduction in discomfort and dryness symptoms at the end of the day (p<0.05, χ2) was observed. No significant changes were observed in Ap4A concentration in any group. Bulbar redness, limbal redness, and conjunctival staining increased significantly in the Si-Hy group (p<0.05, Kruskal–Wallis test). Conclusion. Background: Residual depressive symptoms are associated with a poor prognosis for relapse or recurrence and are recognized as impeding factors of functionality. Recovery to the pre-depression level of functioning should be the goal of treatment.Aim: To evaluate outcomes in depressed outpatients treated with escitalopram regarding response, recovery, residual symptoms, functionality and ability to work over 48 weeks.Method: 3278 outpatients were evaluated at weeks 8, 24 and 48. A simple questionnaire was used to rate severity of illness, impairment of functionality, treatment response, tolerability, presence and severity of residual symptoms, whether remission with residual symptoms or recovery was achieved, and to what degree the patient was able to work.Results: Data over the full 48-week period were available for 75.8% of patients, for whom treatment response was rated as "very good" or "good" in 81%. However, only 42% of the completing patients achieved recovery without residual symptoms, while 41% were rated as remitters with residual symptoms. Lack of energy/motivation was the most common reported residual symptom and was present in 23.5% of patients at study end. Concentration difficulties were present in 15.8% and impaired sleep in 13.9% of patients. Complete inability to work decreased from 36% at baseline to 9% at week 48, while full-time working capacity increased from 37% to 62%.Limitations: Non-controlled observational real life study using simple ratings rather than established rating scales.Conclusion: <50% of patients completing a one-year antidepressant treatment regimen were rated as being symptomatically fully recovered, and ≈50% still reported functional deficits. This work presents a simulation study on both energy and economics of power generation plants with inherent CO 2 capture based on chemical looping combustion technologies. Combustion systems considered include a conventional chemical looping system and two extended three-reactor alternatives (exCLC and CLC3) for simultaneous hydrogen production. The power generation cycles include a combined cycle with steam injected gas turbines, a humid air turbine cycle and a simple steam cycle. Two oxygen carriers are considered in our study, iron and nickel. We further analyze the effect of the pressure reaction and the turbine inlet temperature on the plant efficiency. Results show that plant efficiencies as high as 54% are achieved by the chemical looping based systems with competitive costs. That value is well above the efficiency of 46% obtained by a conventional natural gas combined cycle system under the same conditions and simulation assumptions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Nucleic acid molecules play a key role in a variety of biological processes. Starting from storage and transfer tasks, this also comprises the triggering of biological processes, regulatory effects and the active influence gained by target binding. Based on the experimental output (in this case promoter sequences), further in silico analyses aid in gaining new insights into these processes and interactions. The numerical description of nucleic acids thereby constitutes a bridge between the concrete biological issues and the analytical methods. Hence, this study compares 26 descriptor sets obtained by applying well-known numerical description concepts to an established dataset of 38 DNA promoter sequences. The suitability of the description sets was evaluated by computing partial least squares regression models and assessing the model accuracy. We conclude that the major importance regarding the descriptive power is attached to positional information rather than to explicitly incorporated physico-chemical information, since a sufficient amount of implicit physico-chemical information is already encoded in the nucleobase classification. The regression models especially benefited from employing the information that is encoded in the sequential and structural neighborhood of the nucleobases. Thus, the analyses of n -grams (short fragments of length n ) suggested that they are valuable descriptors for DNA target interactions. A mixed n -gram descriptor set thereby yielded the best description of the promoter sequences. The corresponding regression model was checked and found to be plausible as it was able to reproduce the characteristic binding motifs of promoter sequences in a reasonable degree. As most functional nucleic acids are based on the principle of molecular recognition, the findings are not restricted to promoter sequences, but can rather be transferred to other kinds of functional nucleic acids. This paper focuses on the detection of likely mislabeled instances in a learning dataset. In order to detect potentially mislabeled samples, two solutions are considered which are both based on the same framework of topological graphs. The first is a statistical approach based on Cut Edges Weighted statistics (CEW) in the neighborhood graph. The second solution is a Relaxation Technique (RT) that optimizes a local criterion in the neighborhood graph. The evaluations by ROC curves show good results since almost 90% of the mislabeled instances are retrieved for a cost of less than 20% of false positive. The removal of samples detected as mislabeled by our approaches generally leads to an improvement of the performances of classical machine learning algorithms. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Bone marrow transplantation in mice is performed by intravenous administration of haematopoietic repopulating cells, usually via the lateral tail vein. This technique can be technically challenging to carry out and may cause distress to the mice. The retro-orbital sinus is a large area where there is a confluence of several vessels that provides an alternative route for intravenous access. Retro-orbital injection, although aesthetically unpleasant, can be performed rapidly without requiring mechanical restriction or heat-induced vasodilation. In addition, this technique can be easily learned by novice manipulators. This route of administration has been reported for use in bone marrow transplantation but there is no comparison of retro-orbital and tail vein injections reported for this specific purpose, although both routes have been compared for many other applications. Here, we provide for the first time a comprehensive comparison between tail vein and retro-orbital injections for two different bone marrow transplant scenarios in P3B and B6D2F1 mice. In both cases, no significant differences regarding donor engraftment were observed between mice transplanted using each of the techniques. Haematological counts and leukocyte subpopulation distribution were practically identical between both animal groups. Moreover, donor engraftment levels were less homogenous when cells were transplanted by tail vein injection, probably due to a higher risk of failure associated with this technique. All these data suggest that retro-orbital injection is a compelling alternative to conventional tail vein injection for bone marrow transplant in mice, providing similar and more homogenous haematopoietic reconstitution. Metronomic chemotherapy refers to the chronic, equally spaced, delivery of low doses of chemotherapeutic drugs, without extended interruptions. Previously, we developed two combined metronomic schemes for the treatment of murine mammary tumors. The aim of this study was to compare their effects on tumor and metastasis growth, survival, and toxicity. Metronomic chemotherapy with Cyclophosphamide + Celecoxib (Cy + Cel) showed higher antimetastatic power than Cyclophosphamide + Doxorubicin (Cy + Dox), while being similar in other aspects. That difference, plus the advantage that represents its oral administration, suggests that the Cy + Cel combination is more suitable than Cy + Dox for metronomic chemotherapy of mammary tumors and could be proposed to the translation to the clinic. Abstract: Pyrolysis and combustion of different samples from a sewage sludge composting tunnel plant were studied by thermogravimetry. Two series of samples were analyzed: initially, 8 samples were taken at 8 different points from different stages of the process; later, 5 samples from different points at the end of the composting tunnel were taken. The experiments were carried out at 10°C/min, in N2 atmosphere and N2:O2 4:1 atmosphere. The results were discussed to analyze the heterogeneity of the samples. In addition, the compositions of the samples taken for the analysis were deduced using the decomposition kinetics as correlation of weight loss vs. time. The fractions considered were sewage sludge, straw and sawdust. Abstract: Gelatines were extracted from mackerel and blue whiting bones after chemical or enzymatic pre-treatments and their functional properties (solubility, foaming and emulsifying properties) were analysed. The pre-treatment significantly (p <0.05) affected the composition and the functional properties of the extracted gelatines. The amino acid analyses showed that chemically pre-treated bone gelatines had higher imino acids (proline and hydroxyproline) contents compared to those extracted after the enzymatic pre-treatment, for both fish species. It was observed that all gelatines had higher solubility at low pH with a maximum value observed at pH 2. A significant effect of ionic strength was observed. Increasing the NaCl concentration to more than 1% resulted in a significant decrease of the solubility. Mackerel bone gelatines showed lower foaming capacity (FC) and higher foaming stability (FS) than blue whiting bone gelatines. Increasing the concentration of gelatine decreased the emulsifying activity index (EAI) but increased the stability index (ESI). Abstract: This short communication analyzes the results recently presented in the paper “On a novel dead time compensator for stable processes with long dead times” published in the Journal of Process Control. In the mentioned paper it is argued that the proposed strategy, called modified Smith predictor (MSP), gives better performance than the filtered Smith predictor (FSP) dead-time compensator for stable processes with dead time. In fact MSP has the same structure as FSP and only some specific tuning rules of the filters are proposed. Therefore, in this work some aspects of the comparative analysis and tuning rules presented in the referred paper are discussed to show that MSP is a particular case of FSP and that for some particular cases its tuning rule does not allow for a good closed-loop response. Workload and experience in cycling have been suggested as factors influencing joint kinematics in cycling. The aims of our study were to (1) compare cyclists and non-cyclists lower limb kinematics and (2) to assess the effects of different workload levels on joint kinematics of cyclists and non-cyclists. Fifteen male athletes with experience in road cycling and triathlon competitions and fourteen male non-athletes volunteered to take part in the study. They performed an incremental test to exhaustion using their own bicycles (athletes) or a road bicycle set for their body dimensions (non-athletes). Right sagittal plane kinematics and gases exchanges were collected during the test. Ventilatory thresholds related workloads were defined for offline analysis of lower limb joint kinematics. Greater ankle range of motion was observed for athletes (17%) and non-athletes (25%) at maximal workload level compared to lower workload levels. Greater forward body position was observed for athletes (∼ 12%) and non-athletes (5-7%). Smaller hip flexion was observed for non-athletes compared to athletes (7%). Sub maximal workload level did not substantially affect lower limb joint kinematics. Similar lower limb joint motion between athletes and non-athletes suggests that changes in road cycling training may not result in different joint kinematics. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Pollutant trading adds flexibility to the pollution abatement decision making and introduces a new alternative to policy makers and industries. The overall goal is to meet environmental conditions equal or better than those obtained through the implementation of pollutant treatment technologies, but at a lower cost. This work proposes optimization models that can guide industries in taking optimal decisions under the flexibility provided by the trading. The mathematical models, formulated as mixed-integer programming problems, are limited to watershed trading and have been implemented and solved through the GAMS modeling environment. Results include optimal decisions for each pollutant source in order to satisfy global environmental regulations. That is, either implementing one of the available pollution abatement technologies or attaining credits through trading. To assess the performance of the optimization models, we consider a mercury trading case study. A comparison among the nontrading solution and the solutions of the various pollution trading models is presented and analyzed. As the environmental constraints become more stringent, the value of the objective function (cost of technology implementation and fines) increases and the configuration of the required technologies changes to avoid high concentrations of pollutants presented in the various discharge points of the watershed. Abstract: The effect of hydroxyethyl methylcellulose (HEMC), in comparison with hydroxypropyl methylcellulose (HPMC), on the body weight and lipid metabolism in mice fed with high fat diet was investigated. The animals were given normal control diet (NC group), high fat diet (HF group), or high fat diet supplemented with either HEMC (HF+HEMC group) or HPMC (HF+HPMC group) for 6weeks. At the end of the experimental period, both HF+HEMC and HF+HPMC groups showed reduced body weight, body fat, plasma triglyceride and total cholesterol contents, atherogenic index and free fatty acid level, and increased HDL-cholesterol concentration relative to the HF group. The hypolipidemic effect was partly due to the inhibition of lipogenesis and regulation of adipokine production. These findings demonstrate that compared with HPMC, HEMC was similarly effective in improving the lipid metabolism under high fat diet condition and may be useful in the prevention and treatment of high fat diet-induced hyperlipidemia. This article brings empirical evidence to the conceptual framework of tourism values developed by the Tourism Education Future Initiative by exploring the content of the mission statements of 85 graduate programs in tourism around the world as well as the content of 156 posts in international job search engines advertising for positions in tourism related industries. Finally a survey conducted in several international universities, with an in-depth case study applied at the University of Lugano, Switzerland revealed interesting results concerning the values students in tourism programs believe are important for themselves, their universities and the industry. Objective: This study aimed to examine the association of loneliness and social isolation on cognition over a 3-year follow-up period in middle- and older-aged adults.Methods: Data from a Spanish nationally representative sample were analyzed (n = 1691; aged 50 years or older). Loneliness, social isolation, and cognition (immediate recall, delayed recall, verbal fluency, forward digit span, backward digit span, and a composite cognitive score) were assessed both at baseline and at follow-up. Adjusted generalized estimating equations models were performed.Results: Loneliness was significantly associated with lower scores in the composite cognitive score, immediate and delayed recall, verbal fluency, and backward digit span (B = -0.14 to B = -3.16; P < .05) and with a more rapid decline from baseline to follow-up in two out of six cognitive tests. Higher social isolation was associated with lower scores in the composite cognitive score, verbal fluency, and forward digit span (B = -0.06 to B = -0.85; P < .05). The effect of loneliness and social isolation on cognition remained significant after the exclusion of individuals with depression.Conclusions: Both loneliness and social isolation are associated with decreased cognitive function over a 3-year follow-up period. The development of interventions that include the enhancement of social participation and the maintenance of emotionally supportive relationships might contribute to cognitive decline prevention and risk reduction. This work evaluated the cytotoxic effect of different EOCs-functionalised silica particle types. The in vitro toxicity of eugenol and vanillin-immobilised SAS, MCM-41 microparticles and MCM-41 nanoparticles was evaluated on HepG2 cells, and compared to free EOCs and pristine materials. The results revealed that free essential oil components and bare silica had a mild cytotoxic effect on HepG2 cells. However, the comparative study showed that free eugenol and vanillin had a milder cytotoxic effect than the equivalent concentrations of immobilised components on the different silica particles, while differences in cell viability between the bare and functionalised particles relied on the type of analysed material. The most cytotoxic materials were eugenol and vanillin-functionalised MCM-41 micro with IC 50 values of 0.19 and 0.17 mg/mL, respectively, at 48 h exposure. Differences in cytotoxicity between functionalised particles may be attributed to the density of the functional components on their surface as a result of the functionalisation reaction performance for different materials. The study of the physico-chemical properties of particles demonstrated that cationic nature and increased hydrophobicity could be responsible for promoting cell-particle interactions for the eugenol and vanillin functionalised silica particles, enhancing their cytotoxic behaviour. Background: The simultaneous effect of physical activity (PA) and smoking on pulmonary function in young people remains unclear. Propose: The aim of this study was to determine the influence of smoking and PA on pulmonary function in young university students in Cáceres, Spain. Methods: A sample of 120 young nursing students was studied (60 smokers and 60 nonsmokers). All subjects underwent spirometry with a COPD-6 portable device, and their level of PA was quantified using the International Physical Activity Questionnaire. The influence of PA and smoking on pulmonary function was determined by comparing hypotheses. Results: Significant differences were observed between smokers and nonsmokers in terms of percent forced expiratory volume in 1 second, percent forced expiratory volume in 6 seconds, lung age, and the difference between lung age and chronological age (LA–CA) in those who practiced mild PA. In the subjects who performed moderate and vigorous PA, these differences were not noted. In the intragroup analysis, significant differences were observed in smokers in terms of percent forced expiratory volume in 1 second, percent forced expiratory volume in 6 seconds, lung age, and LA–CA; however, in the control group, differences were only observed in terms of lung age and LA–CA. These findings were confirmed in the multivariate analysis. Conclusions/Implications for Practice: Our findings confirmed a deterioration in pulmonary function in smokers who did not perform moderate or vigorous PA. Validity and reliability have become crucial factors in tracking player load and positioning. One of the most important parameters to guarantee accurate measurements with radiofrequency systems is the number of reference nodes used to calculate player position. However, the accuracy of ultra-wideband (UWB) technology has only been analysed with 6 antennae. So, the purpose of the present study was to analyse the accuracy and inter-unit reliability of an UWB system with eight antennae. Three well-trained males covered 18 trajectories for the analysis of x- and y- coordinate accuracy assessment related to the positional variation among eight antennae UWB data and lines on a basketball court. This was achieved using geographical information system mapping software that calculated, for each interval and participant, the distance from the main axis of locomotion and the opposite side of the field every 0.5 s. The results showed that this is a valid system (Mean = 0.03 m; magnitude differences = 0.21% with real measures as reference; %CV <1% in all cases) for measuring locomotion and positioning. Besides, the inter-unit, test-retest and inter-subject analysis did not influence the reliability results. Background: Preclinical results showing therapeutic effect and low toxicity of metronomic chemotherapy with cyclophosphamide (Cy) + celecoxib (Cel) for mammary tumors encouraged its translation to the clinic for treating advanced breast cancer patients (ABCP).Patients and Methods: A single-arm, mono-institutional, non-randomized, phase II, two-step clinical trial (approved by Bioethics Committee and Argentine Regulatory Authority) was designed. Patients received Cy (50 mg po.d) + Cel (200 mg p.o.bid). Patient eligibility criteria included: ABCP who progressed to anthracyclines, taxanes and capecitabine, ≤4 chemotherapy schemes, with good performance status. Several pro- and anti-angiogenic molecules and cells were determined as biomarkers. Informed consent was signed by all patients. Primary endpoint was clinical benefit (CB).Results: Twenty patients were enrolled. Main clinical outcomes were prolonged disease stabilization and partial remission in 10/20 and 1/20 patients, respectively. CB was 55 %, and time to progression (TTP) was 21.1 weeks. Median TTP in patients who achieved CB was 35.6 weeks, and mean overall survival was 44.20 weeks. There were no grade 3/4 toxicities associated with treatment. Circulating endothelial cells (CECs) increased at the time of progression in patients who showed CB (P = 0.014). Baseline CECs and circulating endothelial progenitor cells showed marginal associations with TTP. Serum VEGF decreased (P = 0.050), sVEGFR-2 increased (P = 0.005) and VEGF/sVEGFR-2 ratio decreased during treatment (P = 0.041); baseline VEGF and VEGF/sVEGFR-2 were associated with TTP (P = 0.035 and P = 0.030, respectively), while sVEGFR-2 did not.Conclusions: Treatment was effective, showing low toxicity profile and excellent tolerability. The combination had anti-angiogenic effect. Increased levels of CEC could be useful for detecting progression. Aim The measurement of rejection-causing HLA Abs in serological samples of HLA sensitized individuals has clinical relevance in the evaluation of pre- and post-transplant patients. However, due to the increasing demand for more accurate and meaningful data, the determination of MFI values alone is not sufficient anymore to evaluate a patient’s risk potential. In this study, we aimed to demonstrate the enormous complexity of Ab patterns in serological specimen. Methods To visualize variations and different levels of HLA Ab patterns, several investigative tools were applied including HLA Ab-detection assays, neutralization experiments, sera titration analysis and comparative information from human monoclonal Ab profiles derived from single B cells. Results In tier 1, neutralization experiments clearly demonstrated that original response patterns could be deconvoluted into individual sub-patterns and single alleles identified as primary cause of an immunizing event. Depending on exposure, one or several antigens were generally involved. Tier 2 patterns were originated from a single epitope harbored by the immunizing antigen of origin that naturally cross-reacts with related epitope-sharing antigens. Currently, over 100 human monoclonal Ab patterns were collected defining such epitopes and being used to further resolve Tier 1 patterns by a pattern recognition algorithm. Tier 3 involves either individual epitopes shared among related antigens or Abs that recognize a specific HLA/Ab interaction but not necessarily at the same affinity. Tier 4 includes diverse epitope patterns that appear using different isotype-recognizing detection systems. Tier 5 refers to experiments conducted under a time interval, visualizing the appearance/disappearance of different Ab species in time. Conclusion We believe that the knowledge gained about the apparent complexity of specific immune patterns will help us to reach the next chapter of patient care and contribute to a better risk management in Ab-related graft rejection. The aims of this study were to identify the key external and internal load variables in professional futsal through principal components analysis (PCA), and analyse the physical performance required by the players in official matches. Data were collected from 14 female players during 10 matches using WIMU PROTM. The PCA selected a total of 22 variables as key indicators of players' load. Specifically, these variables were represented by five principal components. However, a novel finding was that different components were extracted when the analysis was carried out by full match (68.83% of total variance), first half (69.81% of total variance), or second half (65.96% of total variance). Also, this study found that the players decreased their physical performance during the second half. Based on these results, this study may help optimize performance and reduce the injury risk. Performance should not be only analysed considering the full match external/internal load but also specifying by match halves. This is explained by the fact that there were variables that made up the principal components in the first half, but not in the second half or full match. The objective of this cross-sectional study was to evaluate the frequency, impact, and management of sexual dysfunction associated with commonly prescribed antidepressants available in psychiatry outpatient clinics in Spain. We recruited 2163 adult patients who had undergone treatment with antidepressants for at least 8 weeks and had a history of normal sexual functioning before the prescription of the antidepressant, except for mildly impaired libido. We used the Psychotropic-Related Sexual Dysfunction Questionnaire (PRSexDQ-SALSEX) for evaluating the frequency and tolerance of sexual dysfunction and whether this side effect was spontaneously reported. Overall, 79% patients showed sexual dysfunction, as indicated by a total score ≥ 3 on the PRSexDQ-SALSEX; 64% showed moderate-severe sexual dysfunction, with no differences between men and women on these outcomes. In the multivariate logistic regression analysis, treatment with a serotonergic antidepressant and having a severe clinical state of psychiatric illness were the factors associated with the highest likelihood of presenting with sexual dysfunction. Sexual dysfunction was spontaneously reported by 838 (41%) of the 2066 evaluable patients for this outcome. Among patients with sexual dysfunction, this condition was poorly tolerated by 22% of the patients, with these frequencies being significantly higher in men than in women. The most frequently used strategies employed by the psychiatrists in our study for dealing with sexual dysfunction were switching to another antidepressant (34%) and waiting for spontaneous resolution (33%). In conclusion, our results indicate that despite being a well-known, long-standing side effect of antidepressants, sexual dysfunction continues to be extremely common in patients receiving antidepressants, especially serotonergic ones, potentially jeopardizing treatment success in a substantial proportion of patients. Background Vancomycin (VAN)-associated acute kidney injury (AKI) is increased when VAN is combined with certain beta-lactams (BLs) such as piperacillin-tazobactam (TZP) but has not been evaluated with ceftolozane-tazobactam (C/T). Our aim was to investigate the AKI incidence of VAN in combination with C/T (VAN/C/T) compared with VAN in combination to TZP (VAN-TZP). Methods We conducted a multicenter, observational, comparative study across the United States. The primary analysis was a composite outcome of AKI and risk, injury, failure, loss, end stage renal disease; Acute Kidney Injury Network; or VAN-induced nephrotoxicity according to the consensus guidelines. Multivariable logistic regression analysis was conducted to adjust for confounding variables and stratified Kaplan–Meir analysis to assess the time to nephrotoxicity between the 2 groups. Results We included VAN/C/T (n = 90) and VAN-TZP (n = 284) at an enrollment ratio of 3:1. The primary outcome occurred in 12.2% vs 25.0% in the VAN-C/T and VAN-TZP groups, respectively (P =.011). After adjusting for confounding variables, VAN-TZP was associated with increased odds of AKI compared with VAN-C/T; with an adjusted odds ratio of 3.308 (95% confidence interval, 1.560–6.993). Results of the stratified Kaplan–Meir analysis with log-rank time-to-nephrotoxicity analysis indicate that time to AKI was significantly shorter among patients who received VAN-TZP (P =.004). Cox proportional hazards analysis demonstrated that TZP was consistent with the primary analysis (P =.001). Conclusions Collectively, our results suggest that the AKI is not likely to be related to tazobactam but rather to piperacillin, which is a component in VAN-TZP but not in VAN-C/T. Aims: To test the screening performance of urinary ethyl glucuronide (EtG) under routine clinical conditions in a sample of alcohol-dependent outpatients, comparing it against urinary ethanol, self reports and clinical judgment.Methods: A cross-sectional study under routine conditions was conducted in February 2015, where 613 consecutive urinary samples, provided by 188 outpatients with alcohol use disorders, were analyzed for ethanol and EtG (cut-off level = 500 ng/ml). Clinical variables such as the presence of aversive medication, comorbidities and clinician judgment were also collected. The discrepancy between the number of alcohol and EtG positives was recorded. A logistic regression analysis including clinical variables was conducted to assess for predictors of EtG positivity.Results: Urinary alcohol yielded 9 positives (1.5% of all urine samples) belonging to 8 patients. EtG yielded 136 positives (22% of all urine samples) belonging to 74 patients. Of these, 93.4% (127 of 136) were negative for alcohol. All urinary alcohol positives resulted in EtG positives. The clinician judged 48 samples from 26 patients as belonging to not abstinent patients and 550 samples from 178 patients as belonging to abstinent patients. She was unsure in 15 samples from 15 patients. When comparing it against EtG as the gold standard, the area under the curve was 0.592. Self reports were extremely unreliable in this study, with only 5 patients reporting drinking in a total of 6 urine samples. In the logistic regression model, only aversive medications (OR 2.1, 95% CI 1.3-3.3) and clinician judgment (OR 2, 95% CI 1.4-2.9) resulted in significant effects.Conclusions: EtG performed largely better than ethanol for urine screening in alcohol outpatients, detecting an extra 20.4% (125 out of 613) of positives. It means that for each alcohol-positive sample, there were 15 EtG-positive samples. Although better than ethanol, clinician judgment was also not performed efficiently. If routinely implemented in the screening of alcohol outpatients, EtG might bring relevant changes that merit further research. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Summary: The aim of this study was to evaluate feasibility, reliability, validity of the SWAL-QOL (a questionnaire on swallowing problems in daily life), and to define sample size calculations and a clinically relevant cut-off score. One hundred and two patients were treated for cancer of the oral cavity or pharynx and 111 healthy subjects completed the SWAL-QOL and the EORTC H and N35 questionnaire. A randomly selected subset of patients (n =29) completed the SWAL-QOL twice to assess test–retest stability. For the patient sample, data on tumor site (oral or oropharyngeal) and stage (I–IV), treatment modality (surgery, radiation, surgery+radiation, chemoradiation), and presence of a PEG tube were abstracted from medical records. Reliability of the SWAL-QOL was high with high internal consistency and test–retest stability. Feasibility was good, except for patients with tube feeding, of whom 38% did not complete the questionnaire (versus 9% of those with oral feeding). A cut-off score of 14 points (or higher) was defined regarding the total SWAL-QOL score to identify patients with swallowing problems with 94% sensitivity and 84% specificity. A difference score of 12 points or more is proposed to be used in study designs with multiple groups. It can be concluded that the SWAL-QOL is a feasible, reliable, and valid questionnaire to assess patients’ swallowing impairment. It can be used in future comparative studies for oral and oropharyngeal cancer and in clinical practice to identify patients in need of further diagnostics and/or swallowing rehabilitation services. Aim: The aim of this study was to compare the cyclic fatigue strength of different reciprocating rotary systems depending on the movement used. Methods: Four study groups were analyzed (n = 30): (1) Reciproc®, (2) Reciproc Blue®, (3) Wave One Gold® and (4) Procodile®. Each group was divided into three subgroups according to the motion used: (A) Reflex Dynamic® (n = 10), (B) ReFlex Smart® (n = 10) and (C) conventional reciprocating motion (n = 10). They were used in a dynamic cyclic fatigue prototype until their fracture, and the time was measured in seconds. The results obtained were analyzed with the ANOVA method, and for two-to-two comparisons, the Tukey method and Weibull statistics were used. Results: Procodile ReFlex Smart had the longest time to failure, and statistically significant differences were found between Procodile ReFlex Smart and the other files and motions (p < 0.05). Conclusion: Smart motions increase cyclic fatigue strength. ReFlex Smart® motion increases the cyclic fatigue strength of reciprocating rotary systems, and Procodile® ReFlex Smart was the most resistant system file. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: Research on the emotional impact of tobacco-warning images (TWIs) has not evaluated the role of context (ie, cigarette packs) as a modulator of the emotional response to TWIs. The objective of the present study was to identify the influence of the cigarette package brand on the emotional impact of TWIs that cover 30% of cigarette packs in smokers and nonsmokers using a specific methodology for the study of emotion.Methods: The participants included 95 smokers and 111 nonsmokers who observed three TWIs under two conditions: TWIs that covered 30% of cigarette packs and TWIs alone, without brands. Additionally, 18 pictures from the International Affective Picture System were presented as comparison stimuli and to reduce the effect of habituation. The Self-Assessment Manikin was used to assess valence, arousal, and dominance dimensions.Results: TWIs that covered 30% of cigarette packs were evaluated as least aversive, with lower ratings of arousal and higher ratings of dominance in both groups. Differences in the valence, arousal, and dominance dimensions were found between groups. Smokers rated TWIs that covered 30% of cigarette packs as less aversive and more arousing and gave them lower dominance scores compared with nonsmokers.Conclusion: The results suggest that cigarette packages modulate the emotional impact of TWIs, especially in smokers, and the minimum size of TWIs (ie, 30% of the front and back of the package) is not sufficiently large to generate an emotional impact associated with avoidance behavior.Implications: Cigarette packages modulate the emotional impact of TWIs, especially in smokers. The aim of this study is to compare the effect of conventional bread and a whole grain bread on appetite and energy intake, satiety and satiety gut-hormones. A randomized controlled crossover pilot study was carried out in 11 university students (age: 18.7 ± 0.9 years; body mass index: 22.7 ± 2.7 kg/m(2)). Participants consumed two different mid-morning cereal-based snacks, including a conventional or whole grain bread. Two testing days were completed, including satiety questionnaires, blood sampling and consumption of standardized breakfast, mid-morning test-snacks and ad libitum lunch. Several gut-hormones were analysed and satiation was assessed using Visual Analogue Scale scores. The consumption of whole grain bread increased satiety perception, decreased the remained energy intake during the testing day, and decreased the postprandial response of peptide YY, compared with conventional bread (p < 0.005). The aim of this study was to examine the applicability of delactosed whey permeate (DWP) treatment on preserving the quality and antioxidant attributes of fresh-cut tomato. Tomatoes were treated with 3% DWP by dipping, spraying and a combination of both, stored at 4 °C for 10 days and compared with the industrial standard, chlorine. The combination of dipping and spraying of DWP showed the best results for all the markers tested. The combined treatment of dipping and spraying of DWP significantly lowered total counts (∼1.0 log cfu/g), yeast and moulds (∼1.2 log cfu/g), inhibited the loss of firmness (25%) and reduced POD activity (15%) of the tomato slices after 10 days compared to the chlorine treatment. Moreover, DWP-treated tomatoes maintained significantly ( p < 0.05) higher levels of vitamin C, total phenols and antioxidant activity (DPPH) than the chlorine-treated samples during storage. Sensory scores confirmed that DWP-treated tomatoes retained better aroma and texture. Also, the appearance and overall acceptability were higher than chlorine-treated tomatoes. Abstract: The concerns over land use/land cover (LULC) change have emerged on the global stage due to the realisation that changes occurring on the land surface also influence climate, ecosystem and its services. As a result, the importance of accurate mapping of LULC and its changes over time is on the increase. Landsat satellite is a major data source for regional to global LULC analysis. The main objective of this study focuses on the comparison of three classification tools for Landsat images, which are maximum likelihood classification (MLC), support vector machine and artificial neural network (ANN), in order to select the best method among them. The classifiers algorithms are well optimized for the gamma, penalty, degree of polynomial in case of SVM, while for ANN minimum output activation threshold and RMSE are taken into account. The overall analysis shows that the ANN is superior to the kernel based SVM (linear, radial based, sigmoid and polynomial) and MLC. The best tool (ANN) is then applied on detecting the LULC change over part of Walnut Creek, Iowa. The change analysis of the multi temporal images indicates an increase in urban areas and a major shift in the agricultural practices. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

The antioxidative and anti-allergic activities of fresh and aged black garlic extracts were investigated. The garlic samples were extracted with 70% ethanol (v/v) and the total phenolic content was measured. The antioxidant capacity of extracts was assessed by determining the scavenging activities on 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl and hydroxyl radicals, ferricyanide reducing power, ferrous ion-chelating ability and inhibitory effect on linoleic acid peroxidation. The anti-allergic activity of extracts was analysed by measuring their inhibitory effects against β-hexosaminidase release. The aged black garlic exhibited significantly higher phenolic content and greater antioxidative activity than fresh garlic. Both garlic extracts showed strong antioxidant capacity in a dose-dependent manner. On the other hand, a considerably higher suppression of β-hexosaminidase release was found in fresh garlic extract at lower concentration compared with that of the black garlic. Results of this study illustrate that ageing of garlic could enhance its antioxidant capacity, but could decrease its anti-allergic activity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness of Health-E You/Salud iTu, a mobile health application (app), on increasing knowledge, self-efficacy and contraception use among Latina adolescents, its impact on visit quality, and app satisfaction.Study Design: This study used cluster-randomized controlled trial (CRCT) of 18 school-based health centers (SBHCs). Prior to the visit, intervention participants received the patient-centered contraceptive decision-making support app and controls answered sexual health questions on iPads. Participants completed a previsit questionnaire and 3 follow-up surveys (48 hours, 3-, and 6-months) after the recruitment visit (where intervention participants completed the app). Differences in adolescents' contraceptive knowledge, self-efficacy, and use over the 6-month follow-up were assessed by generalized mixed effects regression models.Results: A total of 1,360 Latina adolescents participated; 57.2% responded to the 48-hour survey, 50.1% to the 3-month, 49.7% to the 6-month, and 42.3% to both the 3- and 6-month surveys. Health-E You users' demonstrated significant increases in pre-post knowledge (p < 0.001). Intervention participants who completed the follow-up survey reported greater increases in mean self-efficacy from baseline (23.2 intervention vs. 22.5 controls) to 6 months (26.1 vs. 23.4; b = 1.58, 95% CI 0.38-2.77, p = 0.01), and greater increases in non-barrier contraceptive use from baseline (29% intervention vs. 30% controls) to 3 months (63% vs. 45%; OR = 3.29, 95% CI 1.04-10.36, p = 0.04) and 6 months (63% vs. 44%; OR = 5.54, 95% CI 1.70-18.06, p = 0.005). Providers and adolescents reported high app satisfaction and stated it improved visit quality.Conclusions: While data suggest that Health-E You improved outcomes, findings must be interpreted cautiously. Intervention participants had higher baseline sexual activity rates, more recruitment visits for pregnancy testing, emergency contraception or birth control, and lower completion rates of follow-up surveys than controls.Implications: Despite declines in adolescent pregnancy in the United States, Latinas continue to have disproportionately high rates compared to white females. The Health-E You app may be an effective support tool for both adolescents and providers in SBHCs, and possibly other clinical settings, across the country to increase contraceptive use and thereby decrease unintended pregnancies. Purpose: Safety and toxicity evaluation of a novel, liposome-encapsulated rapamycin formulation, intended for autoimmune ocular disorders. Methods: The formulation was assessed by micronucleus polychromatic erythrocyte production, irritability by Hen's Egg Test-Chorioallantoic Membrane (HET CAM), sterility, and pyrogenicity testing. Subconjunctival (SCJ) and intravitreal (IVT) administration of the formulation were performed to evaluate subacute and acute toxicity, respectively. Differences between groups in biochemical and hematological parameters were evaluated by analysis of variance and t-tests. Numeric score was assigned to histopathological classification. Electroretinography (ERG) testing was also performed. Data were analyzed by a 1 way no parametric Kruskal-Wallis and the Mann-Whitney tests. Significance was considered when P < 0.05. Results: No significant toxicity directly related to the preparation was detected. Micronucleus count, mucous irritation score, and pyrogenicity results were negative. Pathology demonstrated no damage related to the formulation after SCJ injection. After IVT injection, only lens injury associated with technique was observed. Retinal function was also conserved in ERG. Conclusions: The preparation evaluated offers a good toxicity and safety profile when injected in a SCJ or IVT manner in an animal model. A clinical trial conducted in humans is highly warranted, as it could reveal an alternative immunosuppressive treatment for ophthalmological immune-mediated pathologies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
