Introduction: Osteoporosis is a major disease state associated with significant morbidity, mortality, and health care costs. Less than half of the individuals sustaining a low energy hip fracture are diagnosed and treated for the underlying osteoporosis. Objective: A multidisciplinary Canadian hip fracture working group has developed practical recommendations to meet Canadian quality indicators in post hip fracture care. Methods: A comprehensive narrative review was conducted to identify and synthesize key articles on post hip fracture orthogeriatric care for each of the individual sections and develop recommendations. These recommendations are based on the best evidence available today. Conclusion: Recommendations are anticipated to reduce recurrent fractures, improve mobility and healthcare outcomes post hip fracture, and reduce healthcare costs. During the last decade, North American policymakers have started to demand more representative research populations. Several papers have suggested that there has been improvement, over the last decade, in the number of studies that include women as subjects, yet these same papers have expressed concern that many investigators omit analysis of data by sex from their research reports. Our study examined all clinical research ethics applications from July 1, 1995, to June 30, 2000, at a tertiary care Canadian university teaching hospital to determine whether the investigator planned to recruit both men and women and whether he or she intended to perform analysis of data by sex. For research studying nonsex-specific conditions, 97.6% of researchers intended to recruit both men and women, yet only 20.2% planned to perform analysis of data by sex. This proportion decreased from 29.9% in 1995-1996 to 16.9% in 1999-2000. Seventy-seven percent of the applications submitted were for studies involving drugs, and only 17% of these nonsex-specific studies planned an analysis of data by sex. The results of this study indicate that although researchers in Canada are aware of the importance of planning to recruit women into clinical trials, more needs to be done to ensure that they plan and perform analyses of data by sex. Canada is a federal country of 10 provinces and three territories. High level information on mental health conditions and service use has mostly been generated from administrative data collected by provinces and territories. These include four major types – hospital admissions and discharges, physician billings, ambulatory care services, and drug databases. At the national level, the Canadian Institute for Health Information brings together this information to produce indicators of outcome. Although these data provide information on patient and health system characteristics, they do not capture the full spectrum of formal and informal mental healthcare. These include changes in health status, functioning, community integration and quality of life. As a result, some jurisdictions have begun to implement more standardized measures of outcome such as the clinician-rated Health of the Nation Outcome Scales or the inpatient Resident Assessment Instrument – Mental Health. In this paper we provide an overview of mental-health-related data sources in Canada, highlight some of the more progressive practices beginning to emerge, and conclude with some thoughts about how the routine measurement and reporting of mental health outcomes in Canada might be advanced including efforts at engaging both clinicians and decision-makers. We live in an era where our health is linked to that of others across the globe, and nothing brings this home better than the specter of a pandemic. This paper explores the findings of town hall meetings associated with the Canadian Program of Research on Ethics in a Pandemic (CanPREP), in which focus groups met to discuss issues related to the global governance of an influenza pandemic. Two competing discourses were found to be at work: the first was based upon an economic rationality and the second upon a humanitarian rationality. The implications for public support and the long-term sustainability of new global norms, networks, and regulations in global public health are discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Throughout their careers, physician-scientists must adapt to the dynamic landscape of the medical research environment. As such, current physicianscientist trainees must overcome unique obstacles on the path to productive research careers. In the paper by Levit et al. in this month's Clinical and Investigative Medicine issue, Canadian research leaders describe the challenges and opportunities for the next generation of physician-scientists [1]. They paint a cautiously optimistic picture. The current article is an outlook and concurrent "call to action" for how ongoing physician-scientist concerns can be conquered from the perspective of a current Canadian MD-PhD student. Clinicians are exposed to numerous hypertension guidelines. However, their enthusiasm for these guidelines, and the impact of the guidelines, appears modest at best. Barriers to the successful implementation of a guideline can be identified at the level of the clinician, the patient or the practice setting; however, the shortcomings of the guidelines themselves have received little attention. In this paper, we review the hypertension guidelines that are most commonly encountered by Canadian clinicians: the "1999 Canadian Recommendations for the Management of Hypertension," "The Sixth Report of the Joint National Committee on Prevention, Detection, Evaluation, and Treatment of High Blood Pressure" in the United States and the "1999 World Health Organization-International Society of Hypertension Guidelines for the Management of Hypertension." The key points of these guidelines are compared and the shortcomings that may impede their ability to influence practice are discussed. In this article, we discuss how we used institutional ethnography (Institutional ethnography as practice, Rowman & Littlefield, Lanham, MD and 2006) to map out powerful ruling relations that organize nurses' wound care work. In recent years, the growing number of people living with wounds that heal slowly or not at all has presented substantial challenges for those managing the demands on Canada's publicly insured health‐care system. In efforts to address this burden, Canadian health‐care administrators and policy‐makers rely on scientific evidence about how wounds heal and what treatments are most effective. Advanced wound care exemplifies the growing authorization of particular forms of evidence that change the ways in which nurses come to know about and conduct their work. Information about several papers discussed during the second joint congress of l'Association des Médicins Biochimistes du Québec (AMBQ) and the Canadian Association of Medical Biochemists (CAMB) held in Canada on October 7 to 9, 2009 is presented. It highlights the scientific sessions provided by key speakers Jean Dubé Bernard Fruteau-de-Laclos and Bassam A. Nassar. It also mentions other papers presented regarding pharmacotoxicology and clinical toxicology.

The article presents information on the "Sixth International Conference on Oral Biology" to be held at Toronto, Ontario, from June 3-5, 1974. The theme of the conference will be "Pharmacology and Therapeutics." Interested scientists are invited to submit specific titles and abstracts of papers to be considered for presentation at the conference. Primary consideration will be given to research utilizing a multidiscipline approach and having a wide appeal to scientists in oral biology. Titles should clearly define the topic; a single page abstract must include a summary of materials, research methodology, results and conclusions.
