El artículo enfoca en la historia de la falsificación de objetos arqueológicos de las culturas prehispánicas de México. El autor recuenta como se han investigado y descubierto piezas falsificadas desde mediados del siglo 19 y cita el interés--en Estados Unidos y en Europa--por el pasado prehispánico y su expresión artística. Describe también las investigaciones mexicanas en el siglo 20 y cita varias denuncias recientes de falsificación.
