The paper analyses how documents, particularly ration cards and voter IDs, mediate and constitute urban citizenship claims, especially on the part of the poor to gain access to welfare services in Delhi. It examines how citizenship is claimed, negotiated, performed, and realized through various documentary, inscriptive, and enumeration counter-tactics. Enumeration counter-tactics include letter-writing, office visits, self-surveys, the solicitation of information through the Right to Information policy, and the production of counterfeit documents. In this respect, I argue that the bureaucratic calculations marked by arbitrariness and indeterminacy remain a predominant mode of urban governance and dispossession. Yet these calculations also precipitate counter-tactics by the poor, drawing our attention to the heterogeneous character of the state. The counter-tactics provide an understanding into the ways in which communities implicate themselves with the state by forging relationships, establishing and inventing kinship ties, and subverting social hierarchies in unanticipated ways. In this paper, the possibility of utilising coarse recycled concrete aggregate (CRCA) obtained from a construction and demolition waste (CDW) plant in Delhi to make 60 MPa self-compacted concrete (SCC) was evaluated. The CRCA was used in as-collected condition and was not processed any further. The aggregate packing (bulk) density (APD) method was adopted to prepare the SCC-CRCA mixture in order to obtain an aggregate mixture exhibiting maximum bulk density/least void content (45%). In addition, SCC was made using aggregate mixtures in which the natural coarse aggregate (NCA) was replaced with CRCA at 0%, 20% and 100% of the total coarse aggregate content by weight. The cement, fly ash, silica fume and water were kept constant for all SCC mixtures. The effects of CRCA on the flow behaviour, mechanical strength, shrinkage characteristics and microstructure properties of SCC mixtures were evaluated. The test results indicated that SCC mixtures made with up to 45% CRCA replacement can be used for structural concrete, which is higher than that recommended in Indian (20%) and international specifications (35%) for traditionally vibrated (conventional) concrete. This paper explores how uncertainty has become a central constitutive feature under the ongoing attempts at rapid extension of highway corridors across India. Contrary to the terra nullius assumption that India's highway programmes operate under, the pathways to accumulation they seek to open present a palimpsest of pre‐existing claims, occupancies and forms of dwelling that come into conflict with the attempts to extend urban space. The paper specifically follows the prolonged uncertainty surrounding a regional highway corridor between the cities of Delhi and Gurgaon, the Dwarka Expressway, which underwent multiple legal contestations over evictions and land disputes. In doing so, it analyses how managing uncertainty in the production of highway corridors becomes profitable for the state, powerful corporate actors and middle‐class homebuyer‐investors, presenting a form of value that can be commodified and exchanged. However, on the other hand, owing to its double‐edged nature, uncertainty also becomes productive for the urban majority in laying claims to urban space. As rapid extended urbanisation increasingly disrupts the lifeworlds of marginal communities, this paper calls for embracing the politics and practices of uncertainty in the continued efforts to push ex‐centric urban analysis beyond the narrow focus on state processes and commodification. In a city where violence against women is an everyday reality and a highly contested subject, gendered claims to the city are also fraught with possibilities and problems. This paper evaluates some of these issues through speech act and resilience of young, unmarried, middle-class women in Delhi, India. Drawing on ethnographic fieldwork, this paper explores how these women navigate public spaces, respond to violence and fear, and claim their rights to the city. I argue that these women's speech act and resilience are forms of everyday resistance to the violent gender order in the city. The paper also demonstrates that violence, fear, speech act and resilience are interlaced into women's everyday lives. In turn, I argue, the divide between gendered violence and women's agency is not discreet spaces but are relationally produced in a city where pluralities, contradictions, and contestations are embodied realities for women. This paper reflects upon the aftermath of the eviction of working-class communities from the core locations of Delhi to Narela, over 42 kilometres from Delhi's centre. The evictees were previously residing in 'informal settlements', which are colloquially known as bastis or labelled as 'slums' in policy documents. Drawing on interviews and focused group discussions, the paper examines the impact of displacement as experienced by the basti residents. I highlight the struggles that residents faced while making 'home' in their new area. Familiarity, repetition, networks, and safety are the few aspects I engage with to explain the process of placemaking in the city. I argue that displacement should be understood beyond the idea of physical dislocation. It should be seen through the lens of 'place' and how a place is constructed over a period of time against the larger spatial order that is produced in the cities. The paper contributes to academic understanding of the varying experiences of displacement within the affected communities and the contestations which produce spaces on the margins of cities in the Global South. Implicit prejudice can be simply understood as any negative feelings or beliefs people hold towards a particular outgroup without being aware of it. One such form is microaggression, which can be defined as everyday verbal or nonverbal subtle, unconscious putdowns, slights, or negative remarks towards members of an outgroup. One of the most common and harmful forms is gender‐based microaggression. Gender microaggression is defined as subtle, unconscious, everyday putdowns, slights, remarks, or insults, whether intentional or unintentional, directed at a particular gender, notably women. Despite a plethora of literature and research on gender microaggression, the focus has predominantly been on understanding microaggressions faced by women in various domains, largely neglecting the experiences of men as victims of microaggression. One such overlooked experience is that of Afghan male students studying in universities in Delhi. Each year, thousands of students from Afghanistan travel to Delhi to pursue higher education, often unaware of the prejudices they may encounter due to associations with terms like 'terrorism' or 'terrorist.' Therefore, this paper aims to understand and study the microaggression faced by Afghan male students by employing the Gender Implicit Association Test on a sample of 103 Indian students studying in universities in Delhi, selected using a snowball sampling technique. This study adapts and modifies the Weapon‐based Implicit Association Test. The goal is to uncover the implicit biases of Indian students towards Afghan male students by examining the association (reaction time) between images of weapons and harmless objects, in conjunction with adjectives related to Afghan males and Afghan females. In other words, words or images that are congruent in our minds should result in shorter reaction times and fewer errors compared to words and images that are incongruent. The results indicate that Indian students were quicker in associating weapon images with Afghan male adjectives (D = −0.64) compared to Afghan female adjectives (D = 0.89). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Near-fault ground motions (NFGM) may have a significant component of the long period velocity pulse (LPVP) due to the directivity effect. The structures subjected to such ground motions are prone to experience large displacements. In this paper, the damage potential of such motions is compared with NFGM (without LPVP) and far-field motions in terms of seismic demand (inter-storey drift and inelastic displacement). Due to the lack of site-specific recorded NFGM, the synthetic ground motions are generated and used in this study. For this purpose, first the bedrock motions are obtained through stochastic simulation approach in which the Specific Barrier Model (SBM) is used as source spectrum and then these motions are transferred to the ground surface using one-dimensional ground response analysis. In order to obtain the NFGM with pulse, the bedrock motions are superimposed with the LPVPs and then transferred to the ground surface. To illustrate, the case of a ten-storey reinforced concrete (RC) building is considered in Delhi region (India) which falls under the seismic zone-IV. The main finding of this study is the observation that the NFGM with LPVP impose almost double seismic demand compared to the NFGM without LPVP, specially for the structures lying in the velocity-region of the response spectrum. This article examines the conflict between press censorship and free speech in post-partition Delhi, focusing on the Urdu press. It demonstrates how conflicts over free speech became a focal point for the intersection of two fundamental tensions underlying postcolonial state formation—between civil liberties and the authoritarian legacy of colonial rule, and between a secular democracy and a religion-based partition. The article explores the Urdu refugee dailies that relocated from Lahore to Delhi amid the partition upheaval and emerged as significant media voicing refugees' interests, often at the expense of Muslim residents. Their provocative writings simultaneously challenged the boundaries of free speech and advanced an exclusionary notion of citizenship based on blood-based descent (jus sanguinis). This narrow conception of citizenship, underlying the partition migrations themselves, challenged the secularist vision of India's first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru. In response, the Delhi administration took actions against the refugee papers, making them central to contemporary struggles over press censorship. By taking the state to court, refugee editors promoted citizens' right to free speech, but simultaneously advanced a circumscribed notion of ethno-religious citizenship. This paper examines the predicament of the Dalit youth in their pursuit of higher education through a qualitative study in a low-income locality of Delhi. In absence of control over material resources historically, education offered promise in liberating socially excluded groups for its instrumental link with modern occupational structure. The policy of universal public education backed up with affirmative action in India has formally aided its access across sections. Even as the participation of the hitherto marginalized groups has been increasing manifold, privatization and marketisation in the education sector under the neo-liberal regime have transformed the educational landscape. Dalit youth is largely segregated into low-quality distance and social sciences education. The paper discusses various constraining and motivating factors embedded within and outside the neighbourhood and educational institutions which shape their educational interests, choices, and decisions. It elaborates on how cumulative socio-cultural, spatial, and historical disadvantages continue to shape the process of educational exclusion, even when these groups live in a metropolitan city amidst educational institutions. However, we also stress that the state policies, informed mentors, shared aspirations, and diversity in socio-cultural interactions hold the potential to alter and widen educational aspirations, access, and outcomes. Discussions on migration and leprosy in India, largely absent from historical enquiries, feature dominantly in epidemiological studies that frame the migrant with leprosy as a bacterium-carrying outsider, crossing interstate boundaries to spread infection and increase prevalence rates in urban spaces. The paper seeks to reframe the debate by analysing the migrant with leprosy not as a risk factor, but as a social identity that has historically animated public policy. By analysing leprosy policy in Delhi from 1920 to 1960, the paper explores how leprosy-affected beggars in Delhi were seen as an indolent class of outsiders burdening state finances, unworthy of adequate support. Confronted by an increasing number of mahārājādhirājas and shahanshāhs during the period between the fourteenth-sixteenth centuries, how do we characterise state-making and royal projections of authority, unencumbered by teleological impositions of "regional" and "imperial"? This paper examines the strategies used by the Baghel kingdom to consolidate its territorial and political control within a palimpsest of warring polities in early-modern North India. In contrast to other nascent Rajput polities of this period who were establishing themselves in opposition to the Sultans at Delhi, Gujarat, Malwa and Jaunpur through the articulation of a strong martial ethos, the Baghels employed strategies of friendship (bandhubhāva) and brotherhood (bhrātṛbhāva). In examining these strategies, this paper argues, the Baghels offer an alternate way of conceptualising the political landscape of the fourteenth-sixteenth centuries, one that does not solely rest on the asymmetrical relations of power associated with the study of "regional" polities. Put more directly, this paper posits the study of the regional polity during this period not in terms of language/literature/art nor in terms of successive levels of subordination, but as a politics of consolidating power. The present paper seeks to focus on one of the prominent aspects of South Asian comics; the nature of urbanity, through a study of Sarnath Banerjee's All Quiet in Vikaspuri, a narrative primarily set in Delhi. Banerjee's Delhi is the space of the capitalists, urban planners, and corrupt policies; in short a 'social product', as Henri Lefebvre had formulated. The paper will examine how Delhi, in Banerjee's comics, is symptomatic of various states of discriminatory infrastructural development, failure and violence endemic to the system, as in many other emerging South Asian cities. It will further investigate the dynamics of uneven development and urban inequality of Delhi to argue the emergence of new socio-spatial and economic trajectories in post-liberalisation India. The paper seeks to argue that through the multiple references to pulp fictions, mythic and hybrid spaces, Banerjee maps the nuanced changes in urban lifestyle and the more liberal shift towards exclusionary spatial practices such as 'short-termism', but also present alternative histories and regional resistance of the lived space that go against the planned space of the city. Finally, the paper will borrow insights from theorists such as Sanjay Srivastava, Ananya Roy, David Harvey, and others to argue how social and spatial justice can be achieved through urban comics that, according to Dominic Davies, helps to restructure 'more socially and spatially just cities'. This paper discusses the newly developed Decision Support System version 1.0 (DSS v1.0) for air quality management activities in Delhi, India. In addition to standard air quality forecasts, DSS provides the contribution of Delhi, its surrounding districts, and stubble-burning fires in the neighboring states of Punjab and Haryana to the PM2.5 load in Delhi. DSS also quantifies the effects of local and neighborhood emission-source-level interventions on the pollution load in Delhi. The DSS-simulated Air Quality Index for the post-monsoon and winter seasons of 2021–2022 shows high accuracy (up to 80 %) and a very low false alarm ratio (∼ 20 %) from day 1 to day 5 of the forecasts, especially when the ambient air quality index (AQI) is > 300. During the post-monsoon season (winter season), emissions from Delhi, the rest of the National Capital Region (NCR)'s districts, biomass-burning activities, and all other remaining regions on average contribute 34.4 % (33.4 %), 31 % (40.2 %), 7.3 % (0.1 %), and 27.3 % (26.4 %), respectively, to the PM2.5 load in Delhi. During peak pollution events (stubble-burning periods or wintertime), however, the contribution from the main sources (farm fires in Punjab–Haryana or local sources within Delhi) could reach 65 %–69 %. According to DSS, a 20 % (40 %) reduction in anthropogenic emissions across all NCR districts would result in a 12 % (24 %) reduction in PM2.5 in Delhi on a seasonal mean basis. Large and expanding cities suffer from a traffic congestion problem that harms the environment, travelers, and the economy. This paper aims to predict short term traffic congestion on a road section of expressway in Delhi city. For this purpose, we first propose a traffic congestion index based on traffic speed and flow. Clustering techniques and the Greenshield's model were used for the derivation of the congestion index. Using this congestion index, congested time intervals of each day and each location of a weekday were identified. This study also introduces a feature series long short-term memory neural network (FSLSTMNN), which links a long short-term memory (LSTM) layer to each feature. It is trained using the many heterogeneous traffic features data collected in Delhi city for the next five minutes of traffic flow and speed prediction. FSLSTMNN achieved the good capability to learn feature series data. We also trained several traditional and deep-learning models using the same traffic data. The FSLSTMNN reduces mean absolute error 12.90% and 17.13%, respectively, in speed and traffic flow prediction compared to the second good-performance long short-term memory neural network (LSTMNN). Finally, traffic congestion is predicted classwise (light, medium, and congested) using the developed congestion index and traffic speed and flow predicted by the FSLSTMNN. Predicted results are consistent with the measured field data. Study results confirm that the developed congestion index and FSLSTMNN can be used successfully to predict traffic congestion. Census data shows that Northeast Indian (NEI) migration to various metropolitan cities has been fast emerging as a new phenomenon where Delhi is increasingly becoming a sought-after destination for out-migrants from the region. While on the one hand, the lack of opportunities or the developmental gaps in the region 'pushes' the youth out, and on the other, by catering to the labour market it not only contributes to the destination's economy but has also leads to the creation or development of areas where people from the region are concentrated, including 'Northeast Neighbourhoods' within the vast city of Delhi. This paper attempts to look into this process of creating 'places' by Northeast out-migrants in Delhi. This paper seeks to examine the role of social pain in the unmaking and remaking of urban subjectivities in a context of cultural change. I argue that doubt and uncertainty generated by shifting cultural boundaries underpins a drive to reassert extant social order, including gendered expectations, generating pain in the unmaking of subjectivities for those who are different or 'other'. In the case of this study, the different are single, middle-aged, women in Delhi, standing outside normative familial structures and forced to answer the question 'what's wrong with you?'. However, everyday practices of repair and 'swallowing' pain could also work to remake a sense of self. Demonstrating invention as well as the politics of pain in their reclamations of space, these 'wrong' women reconfigured subjectivity as a form of cosmopolitanism often defined in opposition to 'parochial' others, particularly male migrant workers and cultural nationalists, who are made to lie beyond imagined urbane boundaries. The mirroring of exclusions highlights Elaine Scarry's work on the incommunicability of pain that results, under conditions of neo-liberal and patriarchal social relations, in both women and working-class men being excluded from city spaces. Rising temperatures are mainly associated with wildfires, but the incidence of fire may also increase in the urban context. Yet, fire in Delhi, India, as elsewhere in the towns and cities of the Global South, remains largely invisible, despite the nearly 11 million people each year who are burnt severely enough to require medical attention. This paper focuses on whether summer temperatures in Delhi are rising and whether higher temperatures and lower humidity contribute to a greater number of fires in urban areas. The data strongly suggest a relationship between the warming city, a growing number of summer fires, and mounting temperatures around the world. Delhi, however, is only one example of an urban reality that is common to much of the Global South. Similar questions about the incidence of fire and whether the number is increasing need to be asked of other towns and cities that share the same vulnerabilities. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper presents a study which was done to investigate schoolteachers' discourse on morality. The teachers used three dimensions to construct and present their discourse on morality: food, religion and relationship. These teachers were drawn from different types of private and public schools in Delhi, the capital of India. The teachers considered religion as a defining aspect of their lives and associated morality with it in an intricate manner. They taught in schools that did not impart religious education; however, their own religious beliefs formed a strong and reliable reference point for their professional role. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper examines space-making in the Jangpura-Bhogal locality of Delhi by documenting communal conflicts in the late 1920s and 1950s. First, it addresses the production of a Hindu religious space by disavowing Muslim ritual practices under a colonial regime seeking to control religious conflict. Second, it unpacks the diverse mechanisms used to produce a Sikh political space during a nascent postcolonial state's management of linguistic subnationalisms. Grounded in power relations and cohesions around multiple social registers, these variegated spatial claims were made through political and religious processions, petitions and physical violence. This paper uncovers a hitherto unnoticed pattern of communal segregation among establishments located in some of Delhi's most important bazars. It demonstrates that this pattern, emerging between 1913 and 1932, was driven by structural features of the ways in which Delhi's trade and retail interacted with communal violence in the 1920s. Those features include the dislocating effects of communal violence on bazars. More strident political activity by merchants, however, was important fuel to this fire. Merchants did not, also, restrict themselves to repeating communal tropes developed elsewhere. Their self-organisation gave shape to a conception of 'Hindu' and 'Muslim' trades. Rather than see a communal 'pre-Partition' in the 1930s, this evidence suggests that communal segregation was already well on the rise in the 1920s. Business as usual, then, was a source of deepening communal antagonisms rather than, as is sometimes assumed, a source of everyday bonhomie. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper introduces the term zones of compounded informality to demarcate locations wherein regulatory exclusions in distinct domains interact to escalate the impact of exclusions for people who live and work in these areas. Based upon a study of India's Delhi, National Capital Region (Delhi‐NCR), I explain how the interaction of flexible planning and employment in particular locales produce zones of compounded informality as a technique of governance. Circular migrant workers in Delhi‐NCR overwhelmingly live and work in these zones, wherein unstable employment and housing contribute to nomadic migration. Legal exclusion from housing protections interacts with other procedural pathways, creating barriers to accessing social protection and citizenship rights. Based on ethnographic fieldwork, including participant observation, interviews, focus group discussions (FGDs), and a survey of 981 workers, I consider how zones of compounded informality in Delhi‐NCR interact with India's Aadhar biometric identification system to variegate access to the franchise and Targeted Public Distribution System (PDS) for migrant and other low‐wage workers. While the problem of Delhi's air pollution is well recognized, as is the class bias of the judiciary in targeting certain sources of air pollution over others, what is less will understood are the unintended consequences of air pollution interventions on indoor and outdoor air quality. This paper shows how the National Green Tribunal has targeted one source of air pollution in recommending waste-to-energy technologies that deprive waste pickers of their livelihoods. The pandemic-related lockdown provides an opportunity to assess the impacts of livelihood deprivation on fuel use. Using data collected from surveys of waste pickers, this paper shows that decreases in income are related to an increase in reliance on solid fuels. Therefore, we argue that air pollution interventions designed to control air pollution from poor waste management have the unintended consequence of increasing air pollution from a different source (biomass burning for cooking) that specifically impacts waste pickers by increasing their exposure to indoor air pollution, while also undermining the government's urban air pollution mitigation efforts overall. This paper is an ethnographic account of elite neighbourhoods in Delhi. It unpacks the lived realities of these neighbourhoods by studying how elite-ness is both constituted and contested within gated residential areas and other public spaces of Delhi. It argues that elites extend the unequal world they inhabit outside their gated residences by identifying certain public spaces for their leisure activities, especially shopping malls, leaving the neighbourhood community centres or RWA clubs to cater to non-elite residents. It also focuses on the narratives of the domestic staff employed in elite households, who too inhabit the public spaces within these neighbourhoods, including parks, streets, and markets. In this way, the paper draws out the class contestations within elite neighbourhoods and explains how these spaces become sites of class fractions and factions as they are marked by the politics of who a 'real' elite is. As such, this paper is an account of how class exclusionary boundaries are drawn and subverted by elites and non-elites both in private (gated neighbourhoods) and public spaces (parks, shopping malls), thus bringing attention to the fractured realities of elite neighbourhoods. The paper describes the emergence of multiple economies of water in India's capital Delhi, using a neo-Polanyian approach of instituted economic process. It analyses the systems of provision, distribution, appropriation and consumption of water, and the formation of scales of these economies of water. The paper systematically compares and analyses the spatially divided and partially overlapping economies of water in the planned colonies and slum-designated areas in the city. In the vision of modernity, older religious sites that imparted education have been replaced with the University as the new temple of learning. These 'temples' house countless dreams of finding and fulfilling one's potentialities and securing a prosperous future. In a highly iniquitous society, the University is singularly invested with the objective of enabling access to success and a life of dignity via education. Yet, in reality, the space is highly fraught for students coming from socially disadvantaged backgrounds. The paper employs the psychoanalytic perspective to understand the complex interplay of the social divisions of caste hierarchy operating within the context of the University. Using a case vignette and everyday observations set in a Department of Psychology in a University in Delhi, the paper explores the unconscious anxieties and defences that circulate among students and teachers unwittingly promoting forms of othering. Understanding these defences is crucial for deconstructing the resistance to learning that comes from different caste locations and for actualizing the vision of emancipatory education. Introduction: Vitiligo is a common form of localized depigmentation and an important public health problem which affects around one percent of the global population and about two percent of the population in India. The present study aimed to document the results and side effects of non-cultured melanocyte transplant in patients with stable vitiligo without post-procedure use of NB UVB. Methods: The present study was a prospective interventional study conducted among patients with stable vitiligo who were attending the outpatient department (OPD) of dermatology of a tertiary center of Delhi. Patients with stable vitiligo aged >10 years who gave their consent for non-cultured epidermal suspension (NCES) were included in the study. Autologous skin graft of size 0.2 mm was taken from the donor site and a melanocyte cell suspension was prepared using standardized procedure, which was later transplanted to the recipient area. All patients were asked to come for follow-up at the OPD after seven days, 15 days, one month, followed by every month till six months post-transplantation, and repigmentation was assessed visually by both graph paper and photography. Data was analyzed using SPSS vs. 21. Results: In our study, the majority of patients had vitiligo vulgaris (27 subjects with 47 patches). A total number of 59 patches were transplanted, of which 38 (64.4%) achieved excellent repigmentation, 28.8% good repigmentation, 3.4% fair repigmentation and 3.39% poor repigmentation. A total of 1302.5 cm² of the depigmented area was operated by NCES and the repigmentation of 874.5 cm² (67.14%) was achieved by six months. Conclusion: The present study found that the majority of patients (93%) with vitiligo achieved excellent or good repigmentation after NCES and the rate of complication was very low. The economic implications of biopolitics – or the administration, regulation, and control of life – have received significant attention in recent geographical and cognate scholarship. An emerging theme of inquiry, largely focused on the Global North, makes contributions to specifying 'lively capital', defined here as bodily value in motion – predicated on accumulation from other‐than‐human life. In this paper, we argue that the biopolitical process of bringing life into the ambit of capital works in cultural, political, and economic registers and not just through singular logics of the economic, as extant accounts have implied. The rendition of life into capital through modes of biopower is not a universal process. It has diverging trajectories that, in postcolonial contexts, involve hybrids between biopolitical and vernacular practices. This argument is made through an account of bovine biopolitics in urban Delhi with specific reference to the city's 'cattle problem' involving 'surplus' animals. It unfolds in four distinct parts. First, drawing on archival work, we trace colonial histories of cattle improvement to reveal how the category of 'surplus' was invented. Second, we deploy more‐than‐human ethnographies of free‐ranging animals in Delhi to foreground how 'surplus' cattle – which we conceptualise as 'living waste' – are driven to feed on waste as a result of gentrification and the enclosure of erstwhile grazing grounds. Third, we turn to gaushalas (cow shelters) in Delhi to show how 'surplus' cattle from the city's streets are rehomed and managed. Fourth, we examine the uneven practices of care afforded to different bovines based on logics associated with right‐wing Hindutva nationalism. Our account provincialises lively capital by opening up more nuanced and situated understandings of the relations between biopolitics and capitalism, attentive to divergences from models situated in Western modernity. In the context of contested succession within a silsila (lineage) of sufis, this paper studies Sayyid Muḥammad Ḥusaynī Gesūdarāz's (d. 1422) recourse to a familial genealogy in order to claim the status of a pīr or sufi master, while attempting to entrench his legacy in Gulbarga where he emigrated to from Delhi after the incursions of Timur (d. 1405). As he arrived in the Deccan at the turn of the fifteenth century, Gesūdarāz used his kinship with the Prophet and particularly his identity of sayyid (a descendant of the Prophet through Ḥusayn) as a persuasive device, to set himself apart from other sufi shaykhs in the area who claimed an equivalent spiritual genealogy. The case of Gesūdarāz reveals a societal pattern wherein the identity of sayyid was gaining new traction, and relational ties were evoked not only as a means of establishing an identity as part of a community but also to supersede others who made the same claim. Kinship was a device through which Gesūdarāz staked his claim to authority, and it was also a mechanism that he and his family utilized to cement their hold on the Muslim community of Gulbarga. Regression Tree (RT) and K-Nearest Neighbor (KNN) models play significant roles in machine learning. RT facilitates interpretable decision-making, aiding in the comprehension of complex data relationships, while KNN is valued for its simplicity, adaptability to non-linear data, and robustness to noise, making it a versatile tool across various applications. The primary drawback of Regression Tree is its tendency to assign the same predicted value (average value) to all tuples satisfying the same corresponding splitting criterion. K-Nearest Neighbors (KNN) is sensitive to irrelevant or redundant features since all features contribute to similarity. This paper proposes a hybrid regression model based on Regression Tree (RT) and KNN, addressing the aforementioned issues. The model's performance is compared with KNN using 10 types of distance measures and further assessed against RT, KNearest Neighbor regression (KNN), and Support Vector Regression (SVR) through a Monte Carlo simulation study. Simulation results indicate that the hybrid model outperforms all other regression models, regardless of sample size, when observations follow normal distributions or t-distributions. Our paper lays out an experiential account of walking the city, an otherwise mundane everyday act, as a performative action. The specific act of walking that this paper examines is part of a series of performance actions titled 'Women Walk at Midnight' (Delhi, 2016- present) where women collectively walk the streets of the city at night. Breaking from the conventional article format, our paper draws on reflexive feminist research and performance analysis to narrate the performative dimensions of walking that foreground how women collectively negotiate fear and vulnerability in/of the city. We draw on our own memories and experiences of walking - embodied, sensorial, even intuitive - not only as participants of the Midnight Walk but as women who often negotiate varied agressions of the city streets. The paper weaves an intricate pattern of relations between space, time and movement of female bodies in the city of New Delhi from a gendered perspective. We posit that transformations of urban atmosphere through the course of the day shape our experiences of the city, reproducing it as a gendered site. Relation of bodies to space, we argue, shifts in response to time. We are interested not only in the singular and deliberate actions carried out by individual walkers, but unpack the shared notions of risk, adventure and pleasure, experienced fleetingly and afforded only through the collective. Air pollution is one of the significant environmental issues. It can cause adverse health effects such as cancer, cardiovascular diseases, and high mortality rates. High population density is a huge contributory factor of air pollution in cities and urbanized areas. Other sources of air pollution are transport, local heating, and possibly a pollution transfer from neighboring industrial regions. Information about the opening and closing of industrial plants, stubble burning, and fireworks can be considered an added value to this work. In recent past years, among the Delhi/National Capital Region. The pollution level has been raised multiple times during November and March months. The most significant root cause of this trouble is stubble-burning air pollution in the neighboring cities like Punjab and Haryana. Another concern is the burning of fireworks in these months due to Diwali and other festivals in the cities. This research paper aims to perform a data-based analysis on the PM2.5 and PM10 concentration levels of the past six years month-wise from the authenticated sources to find out the causes of extreme air pollution levels. This research paper deals mainly with long-term time series, including air pollutants PM2.5, PM10, and other meteorological variables. It models and analyzes the PM2.5 and PM10 values for 2014–2018. The present research work also deals with the facts and methods to handle the high air pollution rate in Delhi/NCR caused by stubble burning and analysis the effect on the environment by the call of Honorable Prime Minister of India Shri Narender Modi Ji for the illusion of candles as a symbolic fight against COVID 19. The paper explores the factors that induce people of so-called North-East India to collectively identify themselves as Northeasterners. It also examines the factors that lead them to be categorised by others as Northeasterners. This is done against the backdrop of a geometrical error in ascertaining the direction of so-called North-East India with reference to the present national capital, Delhi. The colonial project of categorisation of its subjects in the 'north-east frontier of Bengal' and sustained categorisation and identification of the same in free India is understood within the framework of social identity theory. Theoretically, the paper extends the social identity theory by adding the aspects of social validation and social invalidation to understand the materialisation and non-materialisation, respectively, of perceived social identity with respect to a group. To address the issues arising from the erroneous categorisation of places and people with a colonial arbitrary term 'North-East', the author proposes principles of individualisation and human rights. The principle of individualisation offers a possibility towards respecting the unique individual identity of the constituent groups of so-called North-East India and thus allows the ceasing of violation of human rights of the people. Research libraries play an important role in supporting the scholarly community by providing them access to a vast array of information resources along with relevant library services. Amongst the various roles played by these libraries, the service assuming more importance in today's world is the contribution to the dissemination of the research outputs generated by institutions and their researchers. Libraries in research institutions contribute to ensuring wider dissemination of the research outputs; support networking and reaching out to more readers; take up the important role of archiving research output and assist in enhancing the stature of the institution in the form of overall rankings of its research outputs like journals articles, working papers and so on. However, the importance of this segment of library services needs to be discussed, amplified, and brought to the forefront to showcase the importance of libraries in research institutions. The present study gathers libraries of some premium research institutions that are contributing to the dissemination of research output and gets the views of their patrons as to which of these services effectively contribute to the research goals. The Indian capital megacity of Delhi is reeling under deteriorating air quality, and control measures are not yielding any significant changes, mainly due to a poor understanding of sources of emissions; hence, priority option in mitigation planning is lacking. In this paper, we have made an attempt to develop a spatially resolved technological high-resolution gridded (∼0.4km×0.4km) emission inventory for eight major pollutants of the Delhi region where high-resolution activity data of all possible major and unattended minor sources are generated by organizing a mega-campaign involving hundreds of volunteers. It is for the first time that we are able to estimate the decadal growth in emissions of various pollutants by comparing newly developed 2020 emissions with SAFAR (System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting and Research) emissions of 2010 using the identical methodology and quantum of activity data. The estimated annual emissions for PM 2.5 , PM 10 , CO, NOx , VOC, SO2 , BC, and OC over the Delhi National Capital Region (NCR) are estimated to be 123.8, 243.6, 799.0, 488.9, 730.0, 425.8, 33.6, and 20.3 Ggyr-1 , respectively, for the year 2020. The decadal growth (2010–2020) in PM 2.5 and PM 10 is found to be marginal at 31 % and 3 %, respectively. The maximum growth is found to be in the transport sector followed by the industrial and other sectors. Maximum decadal growth found for the pollutants BC, OC, and NOx is 57 %, 34 %, and 91 %, respectively. The decadal shift of sectorial emissions with changing policies is examined. Seasonal production, weather abnormalities, and high perishability introduce a high degree of volatility to potato prices. Price volatility is said to be asymmetric when positive and negative shocks of the same magnitude affect it in a dissimilar way. GARCH is a symmetric model, and it cannot capture asymmetric price volatility. EGARCH, APARCH, and GJR-GARCH models are popularly used to capture asymmetric price volatility. In this paper, an attempt is made to model the price volatility of the weekly wholesale modal price of potatoes for the Agra, Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Delhi, Kolkata, and Mumbai markets using the above-mentioned models. The News Impact Curves (NICs) are derived from the fitted models, which confirmed the presence of asymmetry in the price volatility. A growing literature demonstrates the significance of aesthetics within processes of world‐class city making, as decisions about who gets to live and work in the city are increasingly made on the basis of codes of appearance. However, less attention has been paid to how such codes are (re)produced and (re)directed by informal workers and their organisations in everyday practice. Drawing upon a multisided ethnography in Kampala and Delhi, this paper explores the ways in which market vendors and waste collectors have responded to the proliferation of three aesthetic technologies: the identity card, the uniform, and the code of conduct. We show that workers have appropriated these technologies in creative ways in order to defend their livelihoods against the threat of displacement. However, this act of appropriation has come at the cost of the exclusion of the more vulnerable workers, who now find their activities policed not only by the state but also by a range of non‐state organisations. These findings contribute to debates on labour organisation and world‐class city making by demonstrating the ways in which aesthetic rationalities emerge through an encounter with the tactics of everyday life. Cultural heritage is under tremendous pressure in the rapidly growing and transforming cities of the global south. Historic cities and towns are often faced with the dilemma of having to preserve old monuments while responding to the pressure of adapting itself to a modern lifestyle, which often results in the loss of cultural heritage. Indian cities such as Delhi possess a rich legacy of tangible heritage, traditions, and arts, which are reflected in their present urban form. The creation of temporal 3D models of such cities not only provides a platform with which one can experience the past, but also helps to understand, examine, and improve its present deteriorating state. However, gaining access to historical data to support the development of city-scale 3D models is a challenge. While data gaps can be bridged by combining multiple data sources, this process also presents considerable technical challenges. This paper provides a framework to generate LoD-2 (level-of-detail) 3D models of the present (the 2020s) and the past (the 1970s) of a heritage mosque surrounded by a dense and complex urban settlement in Shahjahanabad (Old Delhi) by combining multiple VHR (very high resolution) satellite images. The images used are those of Pleiades and Worldview-1 and -3 (for the present) and HEXAGON KH-9 declassified spy images (for the past). The chronological steps are used to extract the DSMs and DTMs that provide a base for the 3D models. The models are rendered, and the past and present are visualized using graphics and videos. The results reveal an average increase of 80% in the heights of the built structures around the main monument (mosque), leading to a loss in the visibility of this central mosque. The first case of COVID‐19 in India detected on January 30, 2020, after its emergence in Wuhan, China, in December 2019. The lockdown was imposed as anemergency measure by the Indian government to prevent the spread of COVID‐19 but gradually eased out due to its vast economic consequences. Just 15 days after the relaxation of lockdown restrictions, Delhi became India's worst city in terms of COVID‐19 cases. In this paper, we propose a variable‐order fractional SIR (susceptible, infected, removed) model at state‐level scale. We introduce a algorithm that uses the differential evolution algorithm in combination with Adam–Bashforth–Moulton method to learn the parameters in a system of variable‐order fractional SIR model. The model can predict the confirm COVID‐19 cases in India considering the effects of nationwide lockdown and the possible estimate of the number of infliction inactive cases after the removal of lockdown on June 1, 2020. A new parameter p is introduced in the classical SIR model representing the fraction of infected people that get tested and are thereby quarantined. The COVID‐19 trajectory in Delhi, as per our model, predicts the slowing down of the spread between January and February 2021, touching a peak of around 5 lakh confirmed cases. Young caste‐class privileged gender justice workers in Delhi navigate several relations of power—with Euro‐American feminisms, and with less privileged feminisms and recipients of development work within India. Their experiences reveal that decolonial politics in India cannot be conceptualised without consideration of other axes of inequality including caste and religion. There is thus a need to broaden decolonial and intersectional analyses to include multiple spatial scales, from the transnational to the most granular interpretations of the local. By bringing intersectional analyses into greater dialogue with postcolonial feminist theory, this paper demonstrates that patterns of "outsourcing patriarchy" are observable at many scales, and that these patterns at different scales are co‐produced, each in turn shaping the other. Such a framework also explains how young caste‐class privileged gender justice workers outsource patriarchy and reproduce "mainstream" feminisms even as they seek to avoid doing so. Advancement of mobile technologies has enabled economical collection, storage, processing, and sharing of traffic data. These data are made accessible to intended users through various application program interfaces (API) and can be used to recognize and mitigate congestion in real time. In this paper, quantitative (time of arrival) and qualitative (color-coded congestion levels) data were acquired from the Google traffic APIs. New parameters that reflect heterogeneous traffic conditions were defined and utilized for real-time control of traffic signals while maintaining the green-to-red time ratio. The proposed method utilizes a congestion-avoiding principle commonly used in computer networking. Adaptive congestion levels were observed on three different intersections of Delhi (India), in peak hours. It showed good variation, hence sensitive for the control algorithm to act efficiently. Also, simulation study establishes that proposed control algorithm decreases waiting time and congestion. Academic research and publishing are facing a crisis. The importance of access to academic literature in an interconnected world, the ever-growing cost of subscriptions to this literature, different revenue models of journals, and reduced or stagnant library budgets are pushing the academic community to find alternatives for research publications. In its 25 years of existence, the Open Access Movement and models which sought to contain the crisis have become the subject of considerable criticism. At the same time, a significant portion of academic literature remains locked behind steep paywalls. This has led to the growth of pirate websites and shadow libraries, which have been met with forceful legal retribution by publishers using copyright laws. Using the Sci-Hub case, a current copyright infringement case brought by a group of publishers before the Delhi High Court, this Paper evaluates the Open Access Movement, fair dealing in copyright law, academic piracy, and court cases in the United States, India, and other countries within the broad meaning of the right to research. This paper examines the curation of a month-long public exhibition titled #AanaJaana [#ComingGoing] in one of New Delhi's busiest metro stations, as a form of self-authorship by young women from its digital and urban margins. #AanaJaana [#ComingGoing] is a metaphor for journeys, communications, connections, associations, interceptions, social networks and individual/collective behaviours, that is curated as women 'see' and 'speak' with/through their mobile phones. Using Marie Louise Pratt's notion of 'contact zone', we examine #AanaJaana as a space of encounters that emerges by visually 'composing-with' as well as 'learning-with' the realities and constraints of space, technology and power. Based on self-authorship over a period of 6 months within a 'safe space' of a WhatsApp group of young women living in the urban margins, we draw attention to #AanaJaana as a set of crosscutting networks of power dynamics over women's bodies across the home, mobile phone and the city. #AanaJaana refers to how young women in the margins negotiate the 'freedoms' of moving (aana) in online space with the 'dangers' of going out (jaana) into the city, or the restrictions of entering (aana) online space with the freedom of leaving (jaana) home. We argue first, that #AanaJaana is a space of confinement because of the infrastructural paralysis in the peripheries. Second that it is also at the same time translocally produced by referencing several textual, digital and material spaces of self-realisation. Finally, we argue that #AanaJaana is a space of intertextuality through encounters between emojis, shorthand, voice notes on the mobile phone, with parody and dark humour of their gendered experiences that can transform shame, humiliation and fear into reflection, resistance and agency. The paper concludes that as a polycentric practice, #AanaJaana offers an appropriate metaphor to expand the 'contact zone' in order to decolonise gendered knowledge and power across digital-analogue margins. Punjabi singers produced music in support of the farmers and took on-the-ground initiatives to join the protests alongside protesters at the Delhi border and in local protests. This paper analyzes Punjabi Sikh uses of music throughout history and compares them to the music that emerged in the Farmers' Protests. This paper uses Serge Denisoff's criteria for protest music to cross-examine Punjabi protest music produced in various time periods. The Farmers' protest music and musician involvement in the protests is then scrutinized to understand its significance to the protests and to understand the relationship between Punjabi singers and their audiences. The 2020 Indian farm bills have been the subject of much debate and have engendered farmer protests in multiple parts of the country, notably in Singhu and Tikri on the Delhi border. A striking aspect of the protests is the strong and multifaceted involvement of women cutting across age, class and caste divides, and on a scale which is historically unprecedented. This paper focuses on the participation of chiefly Punjabi and Haryanvi women at the Singhu and Tikri sites but also in their home states and explores their varied motivations and modes of participation. The paper also contemplates on whether their participation experience has the potential to transform gender relations both at home and in the public sphere, especially since the majority of the women protesters hail from deeply patriarchal states. This paper discusses the newly developed Decision Support System version 1.0 (DSS v1.0) for air quality management activities in Delhi, India. In addition to standard air quality forecasts, DSS provides the contribution of Delhi, its surrounding districts, and stubble-burning fires in the neighboring states of Punjab and Haryana to the PM2.5 load in Delhi. DSS also quantifies the effects of local and neighborhood emission-source-level interventions on the pollution load in Delhi. The DSS-simulated Air Quality Index for the post-monsoon and winter seasons of 2021-22 shows high accuracy (up to 80%) and a very low false alarm ratio (~20%) from Day 1 to Day 5 of the forecasts, especially when the ambient AQI is > 300. During the post-monsoon season (winter season), emissions from Delhi, the rest of the NCR districts, biomass-burning activities, and all other remaining regions on average contribute 34.4% (33.4%), 31% (40.2%), 7.3% (0.1%), and 27.3% (26.4%), respectively, to PM2.5 load in Delhi. During peak pollution events (stubble-burning periods), however, the contribution from sources within Delhi (farm fires in Punjab-Haryana) could reach 65% (69%). According to DSS, a 20% (40%) reduction in anthropogenic emissions across all NCR districts would result in a 12% (24%) reduction in PM2.5 in Delhi on a seasonal mean basis. Latent fingerprints are the unintentionally deposited fingerprint impressions gathered from the crime scenes. Many criminal investigation agencies consider latent fingerprints as a significant court accepted evidence. A typical latent fingerprint comes in low quality. Hence, a slight modification in the latent fingerprint may induce a marked shift in the recognition performance. Due to this, wrongdoers behind the crime scenes may try to remove or alter the latent fingerprint information by accessing the fingerprint database. Unlike regular fingerprint enrollment, retaking a latent fingerprint is not always possible. Preserving the latent fingerprints in a single database makes it vulnerable to single-point attacks. Hence, this paper presents a secure way to store and retrieve latent fingerprint information using POB-based (n , n) VSS technique. The proposed method encrypts each latent fingerprint as n secret shares, and stores them in n distinct databases. The distributed storage protects the data from single-point attacks. Along with secure storage, we also introduce a self-recovery mechanism in the case of fingerprint share tampering. The self-recovery mechanism protects the latent fingerprint from different tampering attacks. The proposed method has been evaluated using NIST Special Database4 (NIST-SD4) and IIIT Delhi latent fingerprint datasets. The experimental results show that the proposed technique offers secure distributed storage with lossless reconstruction of latent fingerprint images whenever needed. During earth pressure balance (EPB) shield tunnelling, a three‐dimensional stress redistribution occurs, which leads to development of soil arching. In this paper, development of soil arching by stress redistribution in two types of soils, silty and sandy soil is studied. A three‐dimensional numerical model was first developed and validated using the case study of the extension of Dwaraka Najafgarh Metro Corridor of Phase‐III of Delhi MRTS. Using the validated model numerous simplified numerical analyses were carried out to determine the evolution of soil arching in both silty and sandy soil. The variation in stresses (σxx, σyy and σzz), deformation and shear strain were evaluated and, on this basis, the extent of the loosened region and soil arching region was determined for both soil types. Furthermore, impact of different parameters (i.e., face pressure, grout pressure, C/D ratio and diameter of tunnel) on the evolution of loosened region above tunnel crown was assessed. Based on the numerical analysis, the extent of loosened region in the vertical direction for silty soil was determined to be 1.21D from the tunnel crown and the extent for the sandy soil was determined to be only 0.73D. While in the horizontal direction, the loosened region extends up to 0.72D and 0.37D for silty and sandy soils respectively. An optimal range of different parameters which must be adopted at the time EPB shield tunnelling in silty and sandy soil is recommended. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper presents a bottom-up methodology to estimate multi-pollutant hourly gridded on-road traffic emission using advanced traffic flow and speed data for Delhi. We have used the globally adopted COPERT (Computer Programme to Calculate Emissions from Road Transport) emission functions to calculate the emission as a function of speed for 127 vehicle categories. At first, the traffic volume and congestion (travel time delay) relation is applied to model the 24 h traffic speed and flow for all the major road links of Delhi. The modelled traffic flow and speed shows an anti-correlation behaviour having peak traffic and emissions in morning–evening rush hours. We estimated an annual emission of 1.82 Gg for PM (particulate matter), 0.94 Gg for BC (black carbon), 0.75 Gg for OM (organic matter), 221 Gg for CO (carbon monoxide), 56 Gg for NO x (oxides of nitrogen), 64 Gg for VOC (volatile organic compound), 0.28 Gg for NH 3 (ammonia), 0.26 Gg for N 2 O (nitrous oxide) and 11.38 Gg for CH 4 (methane) for 2018 with an uncertainty of 60 %–68 %. The hourly emission variation shows bimodal peaks corresponding to morning and evening rush hours and congestion. The minimum emission rates are estimated in the early morning hours whereas the maximum emissions occurred during the evening hours. Inner Delhi is found to have higher emission flux because of higher road density and relatively lower average speed. Petrol vehicles dominate emission share (>50 %) across all pollutants except PM, BC and NO x , and within them the 2W (two-wheeler motorcycles) are the major contributors. Diesel-fuelled vehicles contribute most of the PM emission. Diesel and CNG (compressed natural gas) vehicles have a substantial contribution in NO x emission. This study provides very detailed spatiotemporal emission maps for megacity Delhi, which can be used in air quality models for developing suitable strategies to reduce the traffic-related pollution. Moreover, the developed methodology is a step forward in developing real-time emission with the growing availability of real-time traffic data. Delhi being the capital city of India is very prestigious for the country in many aspects. Health sector of the state is one of the most affected domains of the state. There has been a major shortfall and a big disparity seen in the rural and the urban health of the state, where the urban health of the people is still better as compared to the rural population. To bridge this gap several remarkable steps have been taken by the government in this direction. The major step taken is the launch of National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) in 2005, which has the prime objective to significantly improve the rural health care delivery by using the techniques of planning and decision-making and several initiatives taken for financial risk protection. It also initiated Rashtriya Swasthya Bima Yojana, the milestone of Central Government, which provides cashless facility for hospitalisation to the poor people population. Approximately 35 million families have been benefited by this scheme nationwide till date. In spite of the several government initiatives taken to improvise the health of the citizens still there is a major shortfall of good public health services primarily for the poor population of the state. The paper focuses on the development of a feasible self-sufficient community health model for the lower income group of the population of Delhi NCR. The proposed model will be executed and maintained by the community fund itself without much of the financial dependencies on other external parameters. For the successful implementation of the proposed model, the requirements for the establishment were also analysed. Apart from these the benefits of the proposed health model were also assessed which is going to impact the overall health of the society, particularly for the ones who fall under Below Poverty Line. The paper has been divided in three sections. The first section comprises of introduction, objectives, research methodology used and need of the present study. The next section identifies the requirements for the establishment of the proposed model and the last section of the paper looks forward for the Feasibility Analysis of the Proposed Health Model.
