This ENETS guidance paper for well‐differentiated nonfunctioning pancreatic neuroendocrine tumours (NF‐Pan‐NET) has been developed by a multidisciplinary working group, and provides up‐to‐date and practical advice on the management of these tumours. Using the extensive experience of centres treating patients with NF‐Pan‐NEN, the authors of this guidance paper discuss 10 troublesome questions in everyday clinical practice. Our many years of experience in this field are still being verified in the light of the results of new clinical, which set new ways of proceeding in NEN. The treatment of NF‐Pan‐NEN still requires a decision of a multidisciplinary team of specialists in the field of neuroendocrine neoplasms. This ENETS guidance paper provides up‐to‐date practical advice on the NF‐Pan‐NET diagnosis and treatment. Management of NF‐Pan‐NET patients requires a NET‐dedicated MDT decision. ENETS Centres of Excellence should be strongly considered to be involved in the diagnostic‐therapeutic strategy of these patients. Further studies are needed to fulfil the unmet needs in this field focusing on prognostic molecular markers, dilemmas concerning the selection of a therapeutic approach as well as the sequence of their use to achieve success in the management of NF‐Pan‐NETs patients. Using the example of assessing the technical condition of the trunnions of drying cylinders in cardboard machines (CBM), the question of the possibility of ranking cyclically loaded elements of dynamic equipment according to the degree of damage to their material by fatigue cracks using acoustic emission (AE) measurements is discussed. As a result of special laboratory studies with varying loads in the cycle of loading and lubrication of crack edges, the features of AE due to the friction of crack edges and plastic deformation at the crack tip during its growth in a viscous material have been established. It is shown that during cyclic loading of the material, AE signals from the friction of its banks are detected more steadily than AE signals due to a crack jump with an increase in its length, and that tracking the former ensures the detection of fatigue damage in the material even under loading conditions insufficient for crack growth. Based on the data obtained, three AE signs of the presence of fatigue damage in the material of the elements of dynamic equipment were developed under the condition of cyclic activation of the movement of crack edges. As a result of industrial testing of the developed AE signs, their operability was confirmed, their boundary values on the operating trunnions of CBM drying cylinders were clarified, and a method for ranking trunnions by the level of damage due to fatigue cracks was proposed. By comparing the results of AE measurements with ultrasound testing, the reliability of the proposed approach was evaluated and showed the probability of detecting a fatigue crack in the trunnions of CBM drying cylinders at the level of 71%, with the probability of skipping and false rejection of the product of 12 and 17%, respectively. The developed technique is also transferable to other massive dynamic equipment after clarifying the boundary values of AE signs of fatigue damage in the material on this type of facilities. Male lower urinary tract dysfunction represents a common problem in the community. Physicians should approach these patients based on the best available evidence. This summary provides the up-to-date recommendations for the evaluation and the management of men with lower urinary tract symptoms. Lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) are common, often bothersome, and have multifactorial aetiology. To present a summary of the 2023 version of the European Association of Urology guidelines on the management of male LUTS. A structured literature search from 1966 to 2021 selected the articles with the highest certainty evidence. The Delphi technique consensus approach was used to develop the recommendations. The assessment of men with LUTS should be practical. A careful medical history and physical examination are essential. Validated symptom scores, urine test, uroflowmetry, and postvoid urine residual, as well as frequency-volume charts for patients with nocturia or predominately storage symptoms should be used. Prostate-specific antigen should be ordered if a diagnosis of prostate cancer changes the treatment plan. Urodynamics should be performed for selected patients. Men with mild symptoms are candidates for watchful waiting. Behavioural modification should be offered to men with LUTS prior to, or concurrent with, treatment. The choice of medical treatment depends on the assessment findings, predominant type of symptoms, ability of the treatment to change the findings, and the expectations to be met in terms of the speed of onset, efficacy, side effects, and disease progression. Surgery is reserved for men with absolute indications, and for patients who fail or prefer not to receive medical therapy. Surgical management has been divided into five sections: resection, enucleation, vaporisation, and alternative ablative and nonablative techniques. The choice of surgical technique depends on patient's characteristics, expectations, and preferences; surgeon's expertise; and availability of modalities. The guidelines provide an evidence-based approach for the management of male LUTS. A clinical assessment should identify the cause(s) of symptoms and define the clinical profile and patient's expectations. Benign conditions of the lower urinary tract, including benign prostatic hyperplasia, overactive bladder syndrome, and stress urinary incontinence, are frequent in the general population. Despite their benign nature, they have major adverse effects on the quality of life of the afflicted patients and their partners. Despite major progress in the diagnosis and treatment of these conditions, improved understanding and management of these patients remain substantial medical needs. This editorial discusses some recent high-quality articles published in the Journal of Clinical Medicine on the understanding of the epidemiology, pathophysiology, diagnostic, and treatment of benign diseases of the lower urinary tract tissues such as the bladder and prostate. Background: The prevalence and death rate arising from malaria infection, and emergence of other diseases showing similar symptoms to malaria require the development of malaria-specific and sensitive devices for its diagnosis. To address this, the design and fabrication of low-cost, rapid, paper-based analytical devices (µPAD) using surface-immobilized aptamers to detect the presence of a recombinant malarial biomarker—Plasmodium falciparum lactate dehydrogenase (rPfLDH)—is reported in this study. Methods: Test zones on paper surfaces were created by covalently immobilizing streptavidin to the paper, subsequently attaching biotinylated aptamers to streptavidin. Aptamers selectively bound rPfLDH. The measurement of captured rPfLDH enzyme activity served as the means of detecting this biomarker. Enzyme activity across three replicate sensors was digitally quantified using the colorimetric Malstat assay. Results: Screening of several different aptamers reported in the literature showed that aptamers rLDH7 and 2008s immobilized in this manner specifically recognised and captured PfLDH. Using rLDH7, the sensitivity of the µPAD sensor was evaluated and the µPAD sensor was applied for preferential detection of rPfLDH, both in buffered solutions of the protein and in spiked serum and red blood cell lysate samples. In buffered solutions, the test zone of the µPAD sensor exhibited a KD of 24 ± 11 nM and an empirical limit of detection of 17 nM, respectively, a limit similar to commercial antibody-based sensors exposed to rPfLDH. The specific recognition of 133 nM rPfLDH in undiluted serum and blood samples was demonstrated by the µPAD. Klebsiella pneumoniae , a prevalent healthcare-associated pathogen, poses a significant challenge to diagnosis and treatment due to its virulence and antimicrobial resistance. The demand for more efficient, precise and accessible diagnostic methods is imperative, as current approaches are labor-intensive and resource-dependent. In this study, a CRISPR (Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short Palindromic Repeats)-based diagnostic tool for rapid detection of hypervirulent K. pneumoniae infections was proposed. We integrated recombinase polymerase amplification (RPA) coupled with a lateral flow assay and Cas13a (CRISPR associated protein 13a) to target the housekeeping rpoB gene for species-specific detection and the capsular polysaccharide regulating gene rmpA for identification of hypervirulent strains of K. pneumoniae. Tested on 18 K. pneumoniae strains, the devised tool successfully detected hypervirulent strains K. pneumoniae M59 and K. pneumoniae KP109 showing presence of rmpA. This study allows to develop an instrument-free platform for routine diagnosis of K. pneumoniae from serum, urine, and saliva samples that would empower healthcare personnel to facilitate proper and timely treatment of infections caused by the K. pneumoniae. During epidemics, such as the frequent and devastating Ebola virus outbreaks that have historically plagued regions of Africa, serological surveillance efforts are critical for viral containment and the development of effective antiviral therapeutics. Antibody serology can also be used retrospectively for population-level surveillance to provide a more complete estimate of total infections. Ebola surveillance efforts rely on enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISAs), which restrict testing to laboratories and are not adaptable for use in resource-limited settings. In this manuscript, we describe a paper-based immunoassay capable of detecting anti-Ebola IgG using Ebola virus envelope glycoprotein ectodomain (GP) as the affinity reagent. We evaluated seven monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) against GP—KZ52, 13C6, 4G7, 2G4, c6D8, 13F6, and 4F3—to elucidate the impact of binding affinity and binding epitope on assay performance and, ultimately, result interpretation. We used biolayer interferometry to characterize the binding of each antibody to GP before assessing their performance in our paper-based device. Binding affinity (KD) and on rate (kon) were major factors influencing the sensitivity of the paper-based immunoassay. mAbs with the best KD (3–25 nM) exhibited the lowest limits of detection (ca. μg mL−1), while mAbs with KD > 25 nM were undetectable in our device. Additionally, and most surprisingly, we determined that observed signals in paper devices were directly proportional to kon. These results highlight the importance of ensuring that the quality of recognition reagents is sufficient to support desired assay performance and suggest that the strength of an individual's immune response can impact the interpretation of assay results. Objective: Computerized neglect tests could significantly deepen our disorder-specific knowledge by effortlessly providing additional behavioral markers that are hardly or not extractable from existing paper-and-pencil versions. This study investigated how testing format (paper versus digital), and screen size (small, medium, large) affect the Center of cancelation (CoC) in right-hemispheric stroke patients in the Letters and the Bells cancelation task. Our second objective was to determine whether a machine learning approach could reliably classify patients with and without neglect based on their search speed, search distance, and search strategy. Method: We compared the CoC measure of right hemisphere stroke patients with neglect in two cancelation tasks across different formats and display sizes. In addition, we evaluated whether three additional parameters of search behavior that became available through digitization are neglect-specific behavioral markers. Results: Patients' CoC was not affected by test format or screen size. Additional search parameters demonstrated lower search speed, increased search distance, and a more strategic search for neglect patients than for control patients without neglect. Conclusion: The CoC seems robust to both test digitization and display size adaptations. Machine learning classification based on the additional variables derived from computerized tests succeeded in distinguishing stroke patients with spatial neglect from those without. The investigated additional variables have the potential to aid in neglect diagnosis, in particular when the CoC cannot be validly assessed (e.g., when the test is not performed to completion). Due to their portability, versatility for supporting multiple assay formats, and potential for resulting in low-cost assays, paper-based analytical devices (PADs) are an increasingly popular format as a platform for the development of point-of-care tests. However, very few PADs have been translated successfully to their intended environments outside of academic settings. Often overlooked as a factor that inhibits translation, usability is a vital characteristic of any successful point-of-care test. Recent advancements in PAD design have demonstrated improved usability by simplifying various aspects of user operation, including sample collection, sample processing, device operation, detection, and readout/interpretation. Field testing at various stages of device design can offer critical feedback about device usability, especially when it involves the proposed end-user or other stakeholders. By highlighting advances in usability, we aim to encourage thoughtful and rigorous design at the academic prototyping stage to address one outstanding hurdle that limits the number of PADs that make it from the benchtop to the point-of-care. Addressing the pressing demand for rapid and inexpensive coagulation testing in cardiovascular care, this study introduces a novel application of repurposed COVID-19 rapid antigen tests (RATs) as paper-based lateral flow assays (LFAs) combined with machine learning for coagulation status evaluation. By further developing a mobile app prototype, we present a platform that enables clinicians to perform immediate and accurate anticoagulant dosing adjustments using existing post-pandemic resources. Our proof-of-concept employs a random forest machine learning classifier to interpret image feature variations on RAT NC membrane, correlating red blood cell (RBC) wicked diffusion distance in recalcified citrated whole blood with changes in coagulative viscosity, easily interpreted. Enhanced by confocal imaging studies of paper microfluidics, our approach provides insights into the mechanisms dissecting coagulation components, achieving high classification precision, recall, and F1-scores. The inverse relationship between RBC wicked diffusion distance and enoxaparin concentration paves the way for machine learning to inform real-time dose prescription adjustments, aligning with individual patient profiles to optimize therapeutic outcomes. This study not only demonstrates the potential of leveraging surplus RATs for coagulation management but also exemplifies a cost-effective, rapid, and smart strategy to enhance clinical decision-making in the post-pandemic era. Abstract The severity and cost of wound infections strongly demands for simple and fast methods for wound infection determination. Point-of-care testing devices play a crucial role in order to achieve a fast diagnosis and early treatment. Myeloperoxidase (MPO) enzyme, detected in fluids of infected wounds has been postulated as a suitable biomarker for wound diagnostics. Here we present a new system for MPO detection, based on enzyme-catalysed oxidative synthesis of a dye that can be incorporated into paper-based point of care devices. Visual MPO detection has been achieved through the use of phenylenediamine, a common colourless hair dye precursor. MPO oxidation of these compounds yielded bright coloured products distinguishable from the colour of the wound environment. Immobilisation of the MPO substrates on paper strips was achieved through in situ interaction of the oxidised coloured product with branched polyethyleneimine. The colour reaction of the immobilized substrates, detectable by naked eye, responds to the MPO levels present in infected wound fluids revealing an easy system for incorporation of MPO detection in paper based diagnostic devices. Introduction: To contribute to addressing diagnostic health inequalities in the United Kingdom, this review aimed to investigate determinants of diagnostic service use amongst people experiencing high deprivation in the United Kingdom. Methods: A systematic review was conducted using three databases (EBSCO, Web of Science and SCOPUS) to search studies pertaining to diagnostic service use amongst people experiencing high deprivation. Search terms related to diagnostics, barriers and facilitators to access and deprivation. Articles were included if they discussed facilitators and/or barriers to diagnostic service access, contained participants' direct perspectives and focussed on individuals experiencing high deprivation in the United Kingdom. Articles were excluded if the full text was unretrievable, only abstracts were available, the research did not focus on adults experiencing high deprivation in the United Kingdom, those not including participants' direct perspectives (e.g., quantitative studies) and papers unavailable in English. Results: Of 14,717 initial papers, 18 were included in the final review. Determinants were grouped into three themes (Beliefs and Behaviours, Emotional and Psychological Factors and Practical Factors), made up of 15 sub‐themes. These were mapped to a conceptual model, which illustrates that Beliefs and Behaviours interact with Emotional and Psychological Factors to influence Motivation to access diagnostic services. Motivation then influences and is influenced by Practical Factors, resulting in a Decision to Access or Not. This decision influences Beliefs and Behaviours and/or Emotional and Psychological Factors such that the cycle begins again. Conclusion: Decision‐making regarding diagnostic service use for people experiencing high deprivation in the United Kingdom is complex. The conceptual model illustrates this complexity, as well as the mediative, interactive and iterative nature of the process. The model should be applied in policy and practice to enable understanding of the factors influencing access to diagnostic services and to design interventions that address identified determinants. Patient or Public Contribution: Consulting lived experience experts was imperative in understanding whether and how the existing literature captures the lived experience of those experiencing high deprivation in South England. Staphylococcus argenteus and Staphylococcus schweitzeri, previously known as divergent Staphylococcus aureus clonal lineages, have been recently established as novel, difficult-to-delimit, coagulase-positive species within the S. aureus complex. Methicillin-resistant strains of S. argenteus are known from Australia and the UK. Knowledge of their epidemiology, medical significance and transmission risk is limited and partly contradictory, hampering definitive recommendations. There is mounting evidence that the pathogenicity of S. argenteus is similar to that of 'classical' S. aureus , while as yet no S. schweitzeri infections have been reported. To provide decision support on whether and how to distinguish and report both species. PubMed, searched for S. argenteus and S. schweitzeri. This position paper reviews the main characteristics of both species and draws conclusions for microbiological diagnostics and surveillance as well as infection prevention and control measures. We propose not distinguishing within the S. aureus complex for routine reporting purposes until there is evidence that pathogenicity or clinical outcome differ markedly between the different species. Primarily for research purposes, suitably equipped laboratories are encouraged to differentiate between S. argenteus and S. schweitzeri. Caution is urged if these novel species are explicitly reported. In such cases, a specific comment should be added (i.e. 'member of the S.aureus complex') to prevent confusion with less- or non-pathogenic staphylococci. Prioritizing aspects of patient safety, methicillin-resistant isolates should be handled as recommended for methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). In these cases, the clinician responsible should be directly contacted and informed by the diagnosing microbiological laboratory, as they would be for MRSA. This work demonstrates a stand-alone power source that integrates a paper-based hydrogen fuel cell with a customized chemical heater that produces hydrogen in-situ upon the addition of a liquid. The presented approach operates by capillary action and takes advantage of the hydrogen released as a by-product of an exothermic reaction used in point-of-care diagnostics. The paper-based fuel cell produces a maximum power of 25.8 mW (103.2 mW cm −2 ), which is suitable for powering a diversity of electrical devices such as commercially available digital pregnancy tests and glucometers. While device shape and dimensions can be customized, here it is shown that the fuel cell can be designed in a compact form factor and footprint comparable to a lateral flow test while providing a remarkable power output. This approach holds great promise for powering portable diagnostics, as the generated electric power could enable device functionalities required for advanced assays, such as device timing, actuation, and signal quantification. Extracellular vesicles (EVs) hold great promise for clinical application as new diagnostic and therapeutic modalities. This paper describes major GMP-based upstream and downstream manufacturing processes for EV large-scale production, also focusing on post-processing technologies such as surface bioengineering and uploading studies to yield novel EV-based diagnostics and advanced therapy medicinal products. This paper also focuses on the quality, safety, and efficacy issues of the bioengineered EV drug candidates before first-in-human studies. Because clinical trials involving extracellular vesicles are on the global rise, this paper encompasses different clinical studies registered on clinical-trial register platforms, with varying levels of advancement, highlighting the growing interest in EV-related clinical programs. Navigating the regulatory affairs of EVs poses real challenges, and obtaining marketing authorization for EV-based medicines remains complex due to the lack of specific regulatory guidelines for such novel products. This paper discusses the state-of-the-art regulatory knowledge to date on EV-based diagnostics and medicinal products, highlighting further research and global regulatory needs for the safe and reliable implementation of bioengineered EVs as diagnostic and therapeutic tools in clinical settings. This paper presents an overview of integrating new research outcomes into the development of a structural health monitoring strategy for the floating cover at the Western Treatment Plant (WTP) in Melbourne, Australia. The size of this floating cover, which covers an area of approximately 470 m × 200 m, combined with the hazardous environment and its exposure to extreme weather conditions, only allows for monitoring techniques based on remote sensing. The floating cover is deformed by the accumulation of sewage matter beneath it. Our research has shown that the only reliable data for constructing a predictive model to support the structural health monitoring of this critical asset is obtained directly from the actual floating cover at the sewage treatment plant. Our recent research outcomes lead us towards conceptualising an advanced engineering analysis tool designed to support the future creation of a digital twin for the floating cover at the WTP. Foundational work demonstrates the effectiveness of an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-based photogrammetry methodology in generating a digital elevation model of the large floating cover. A substantial set of data has been acquired through regular UAV flights, presenting opportunities to leverage this information for a deeper understanding of the interactions between operational conditions and the structural response of the floating cover. We demonstrate, for the first time, the multiplexed determination of microbial species from whole blood using the paper-folding technique of origami to enable the sequential steps of DNA extraction, loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP), and array-based fluorescence detection. A low-cost handheld flashlight reveals the presence of the final DNA amplicon to the naked eye, providing a 'sample-to-answer' diagnosis from a finger-prick volume of human blood, within 45 min, with minimal user intervention. To demonstrate the method, we showed the identification of three species of Plasmodium, analyzing 80 patient samples benchmarked against the gold-standard polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay in an operator-blinded study. Malaria elimination is a major goal to be reached in the next decade. Significant progress were made in the past, and the prevalence decreased in many areas while the positive trend stalled in the last years. The exact number of asymptomatic carriers of Plasmodium parasites is unknown since this population is not detected by conventional diagnosis methods and participate in the maintenance of transmission. Molecular methods to detect low parasitemia are not available at point-of-care in low-income countries of malaria endemic areas. Adaptation of molecular methods such as loop-mediated isothermal amplification of DNA may provide effective tools but it required simplification of DNA detection. Square waves voltammetry, easily imbedded in small device such as cell phone, was largely described for DNA detection but support for reaction was an issue to address. Here we used an efficient functionalization method of paper-based material to facilitate the interactions between isothermal amplification product and methylene blue for easy-to-use DNA detection. The proof-of-concept of qualitative detection of very low parasitemia from malaria infected patients using newly chemically treated paper for square waves voltammetry was obtained with a sensitivity and specificity of 100% and a limit-of-detection of 0.1 parasite. μL−1 corresponding to a parasitemia of 0.000002%. Based on measurements and research, diagnostics of the condition of a structure aims to provide an answer to the question of what the condition of the structure is, and the necessary steps for reconstruction or rehabilitation. Masonry stone construction is one of the oldest methods of construction of building structures. In spite of that, this type of structures does not have fully defined parameters that influence its behavior. The reason for this is the fact that the properties of masonry stone structures differ depending on the basic material (stone) and binding material (mortar), as well as their combination. The paper presents diagnostics of the condition of masonry structures on the Tabija tower building. Tabija, a low tower for cannons, is a fortification structure from the Ottoman period that is the most completely preserved and was registered for the first time in the city plan from 1717. The structure is in poor condition due to a large number of natural and human factors. The paper will present a detailed visual inspection of the structure, as well as tests conducted in the laboratory and in-situ, the calculation, and decisions and proposals for the rehabilitation and/or reconstruction of the considered building of cultural and historical heritage. Current centralised healthcare models pose many challenges, particularly for developing countries such as South Africa, where travel and time costs make it difficult for patients to seek healthcare, even when urgently needed. To address this issue, point-of-care (PoC) tests, which are performed at or near the site of clinical care, have gained popularity and are actively being developed. Microfluidic systems, in which small volumes of fluids can be processed, provide an ideal platform on which to develop PoC diagnostic solutions. Specifically, the emerging field of paper-based microfluidics, with advantages such as low-cost, disposability and minimal external equipment requirements, provides unique opportunities for addressing healthcare issues in developing countries. This work explores the field of paper-based microfluidics, with step-by-step instructions on the design, manufacture and testing processes to realise paper-based devices towards diagnostic applications. Paper-based microfluidic and electronic components are presented, as well as the integration of these components to provide smart paper-based devices. This serves as an educational tool, enabling both beginners and experts in the field tofast-track development of unique paper-based solutions towards PoC diagnostics, with emphasis on the South African context, where both the need for and impact of these solutions are great. Evaluation of fish stock status is a key step for fisheries management. Tuna Regional Fisheries Management Organizations (t-RFMOs) are moving towards management strategy evaluation (MSE), a process that combines science and policy and depends on technical aspects, developed by scientists, designed to meet management objectives established by managers and other stakeholders. In the Indian Ocean, the current management advice for swordfish (Xiphias gladius) is based on an ensemble of 24 models considering four areas of uncertainty about the stock dynamics. There is an ongoing MSE process for swordfish, and this paper describes the methodology being applied for the conditioning of the operating model (OM), including model selection and validation. In the MSE, nine sources of uncertainty were considered, each being characterized by 2–3 levels. A partial factorial design was employed to reduce the number of models from a full factorial design to those needed to encompass the overall uncertainty. A selection and validation process was carried out, filtering models that converged, showed good predictive skills, and provided plausible estimates. Overall, the estimated spawning stock biomass (SSB) relative to SSB at maximum sustainable yield (MSY), and fishing mortality (F) relative to FMSY encompasses the estimates of the stock assessment ensemble at the most optimist area of the distribution. The MSE for swordfish is an ongoing process that is expected to provide more robust management advice in the future. Aquaculture is expected to play a vital role in solving the challenge of sustainably providing the growing world population with healthy and nutritious food. Pathogen outbreaks are a major risk for the sector, so early detection and a timely response are crucial. This can be enabled by monitoring the pathogen levels in aquaculture facilities. This paper describes a photonic biosensing platform based on silicon nitride waveguide technology with integrated active components, which could be used for such applications. Compared to the state of the art, the current system presents improvements in terms of miniaturization of the Photonic Integrated Circuit (PIC) and the development of wafer-level processes for hybrid integration of active components and for material-selective chemical and biological surface modification. Furthermore, scalable processes for integrating the PIC in a microfluidic cartridge were developed, as well as a prototype desktop readout instrument. Three bacterial aquaculture pathogens (Aeromonas salmonicida, Vagococcus salmoninarum, and Yersinia ruckeri) were selected for assay development. DNA biomarkers were identified, corresponding primer-probe sets designed, and qPCR assays developed. The biomarker for Aeromonas was also detected using the hybrid PIC platform. This article describes a method for fabricating 3D microfluidic devices by stacking layers of patterned paper and double-sided adhesive tape. Paper-based 3D microfluidic devices have capabilities in microfluidics that are difficult to achieve using conventional open-channel microsystems made from glass or polymers. In particular, 3D paper-based devices wick fluids and distribute microliter volumes of samples from single inlet points into arrays of detection zones (with numbers up to thousands). This capability makes it possible to carry out a range of new analytical protocols simply and inexpensively (all on a piece of paper) without external pumps. We demonstrate a prototype 3D device that tests 4 different samples for up to 4 different analytes and displays the results of the assays in a side-by-side configuration for easy comparison. Paper is predominantly composed of cellulose fibers that have an inherent ability to wick fluids by capillary action; it provides an interesting diagnostic platform that is inexpensive, easily obtained, and eco-friendly. Paper has been used in various types of biologically relevant applications including paper-based molecular assays, paper-based ELISA (P-ELISA), paper-based nucleic acid assays, and paper-based cell assays. Based on recent successes with the use of paper as a platform, we contend that paper is not only very suitable for diagnostics but could provide a more advantageous platform than current plastics-based platforms for drug discovery, and would be useful for accomplishing in vitro pre-compound screening steps while offering a possible solution to several economic obstacles inherent in the pharmaceutical industry. Background: Propensity scores are widely used to deal with confounding bias in medical research. An incorrectly specified propensity score model may lead to residual confounding bias; therefore it is essential to use diagnostics to assess propensity scores in a propensity score analysis. The current use of propensity score diagnostics in the medical literature is unknown. The objectives of this study are to (1) assess the use of propensity score diagnostics in medical studies published in high-ranking journals, and (2) assess whether the use of propensity score diagnostics differs between studies (a) in different research areas and (b) using different propensity score methods.Methods: A PubMed search identified studies published in high-impact journals between Jan 1st 2014 and Dec 31st 2016 using propensity scores to answer an applied medical question. From each study we extracted information regarding how propensity scores were assessed and which propensity score method was used. Research area was defined using the journal categories from the Journal Citations Report.Results: A total of 894 papers were included in the review. Of these, 187 (20.9%) failed to report whether the propensity score had been assessed. Commonly reported diagnostics were p-values from hypothesis tests (36.6%) and the standardised mean difference (34.6%). Statistical tests provided marginally stronger evidence for a difference in diagnostic use between studies in different research areas (p = 0.033) than studies using different propensity score methods (p = 0.061).Conclusions: The use of diagnostics in the propensity score medical literature is far from optimal, with different diagnostics preferred in different areas of medicine. The paper reports on immediate effects of pulsed laser operating at 532 nm and fluences below 2.5 J cm–2 on soiled cellulose. The degree of polymerisation was determined viscometrically, while diffuse reflectance FTIR was used to gain insight into the changes in the chemical composition. Although no detectable immediate changes were observed after treatment of paper with laser beam at 532 nm, the irradiation of paper containing carbonaceous dirt resulted in significant discoloration of the treated substrate. Ambient ionization mass spectrometry using paper spray is utilized for rapid discrimination of Candida species without sample preparation. The experiment is based on characteristic lipid profiles and is an extension to a procedure used for the discrimination of bacteria. Candida colonies were smeared onto filter paper pre-cut to a sharp tip, subsequently wetted with solvent and held at high potential. Charged droplets released by field emission were sucked into the mass spectrometer inlet and mass spectra were recorded. Eight closely related Candida species with clinical relevance and known phylogeny were investigated. Numerical data fusion of the positive and negative ion mass spectra and multivariate statistics (principal component analysis, followed by linear discriminant analysis) allowed species level discrimination with a prediction rate of ca. 90%. Abstract: A fabrication method for carbon nanotube (CNT)-based sensors on paper is proposed and provides a repeatable and well-controlled method for constructing a functional paper-based analytical device. The proposed method is based on vacuum filtration process with a metal mask covering on a filter paper for the definition of the sensor dimension. The length, width, and thickness of the CNT-based sensors are readily controlled by the metal mask and the weight of the CNT powder used during the filtration process, respectively. Homogeneous deposition of CNTs with well-defined dimensions on paper can be achieved. The CNT-based sensors showed linear I–V response and their resistances can be designed from 0.3 to 4.6kΩ based on their dimensions. Moreover, the CNT-based sensor on paper has been demonstrated on the detection of the pH value of the analyte solution. It showed the CNT is sensitive to the chemical molecules and the CNT-based sensor is a possible candidate for chemical and biosensors. The development of the automotive industry is associated with the rapid advancement of onboard systems. In addition, intensive development in the electronics and control systems industry has resulted in a change in the approach to the issue of assistance systems in vehicles. Classic hydraulic systems have been almost completely replaced by modern electric power steering (EPS) systems, especially in citizen vehicles. This paper focuses on fault detection algorithms for EPS, along with the available tools to aid development and verification. The article discusses in detail the current state of knowledge in this area. The principle of operation of the EPS system and the influence of the structure of the mechanical system on its operation, in particular the characteristics of the ground–tire contact, are presented. Various error identification methods are presented, including those based mainly on a combination of tests of real objects as well as those combined with modern hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) equipment and virtual vehicle environment software, enabling the development of new diagnostic methods, enhancing the security, reliability, and energy control in the vehicle. A review of the literature indicates that although many algorithms which enable fault detection at an early stage are described, their potential for use in a vehicle is highly limited. The reason lies in simplifications, including models and the operating EPS temperature range. The most frequently used simplification of the model is its linearization, which significantly reduces the calculation time; however, this significantly reduces the accuracy of the model, especially in cases with a large range of system operation. The need for methods to detect incipient faults is important for the safety and reliability of the entire car, not only during regular use but also especially during life-saving evasive maneuvers. Introduction: Gastro-entero-pancreatic neuroendocrine neoplasms (GEP-NENs) are malignancies originating from cells of the diffuse endocrine system. They are rare and localize in the upper and lower parts of the gastrointestinal tract and in the pancreas. Despite such a varied location, GEP-NENs are considered a common group of neoplasms due to the fact of their similar morphology and ability to secrete peptide hormones and biologically active amines. They are associated with clinical manifestations specific to the substances produced by a particular neoplasm. The classification of GEP-NENs is constantly systematized and updated based on their differentiation and grading. The development of available diagnostic and treatment methods for these tumors has made significant progress over the past 10 years and is still ongoing. Aim: In the following paper, we review the diagnostics and treatment of GEP-NENs, taking into account the latest molecular, immunological, or gene-based methods. Imaging methods using markers for receptors allow for high diagnostic sensitivity. Methods: Medical databases were searched for the latest information. The authors also sought confirmation of the content of a particular publication in another publications, so as to present the most reliable information possible. Results: Research results revealed that the diagnostics and treatment of GEP-NENs have significantly advanced in recent years. Surgical interventions, especially minimally invasive techniques, have shown efficacy in treating GEP-NENs, with specific therapies such as somatostatin analogs, chemotherapy, and peptide receptor radionuclide therapy demonstrating promising outcomes. The evolution of diagnostic methods, including imaging techniques and biomarker testing, has contributed to improved patient care and prognosis. Conclusions: The increasing incidence of GEP-NENs is attributed to enhanced diagnostic capabilities rather than a rise in population prevalence. The study emphasizes the importance of ongoing research to identify specific markers for early detection and targeted therapies to further enhance the effectiveness of treating these rare and heterogeneous malignancies. Earlier access to patients' biomarker status could transform disease management. However, gold-standard techniques such as enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISAs) are typically not deployed at the point-of-care due to their cumbersome instrumentation and complexity. Electrochemical immunosensors can be disruptive in this sector with their small size and lower cost but, without further modifications, the performance of these sensors in complex media (e.g., blood) has been limited. This paper presents a low-cost fluidic accessory fabricated using widely accessible materials and processes for boosting sensor sensitivity through confinement of the detection media next to the electrode surface. Liquid confinement first highlighted a spontaneous reaction between the pseudoreference electrode and ELISA detection substrate 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) that decreases the amount of oxTMB available for detection. Different strategies are investigated to limit this and maximize reliability. Next, flow cell integration during the signal amplification step of sensor preparation was shown to substantially enhance the detection of cytokine interleukin-6 (IL-6) with the best sensitivity boost recorded for fresh human plasma (x7 increase compared to x5.8 in purified serum and x5.5 in PBS). This paper presents a generalization of the results previously obtained by the authors and describes four more methods for diagnosing and evaluating the reliability of SCPs by varying the parameters of low- frequency noise under additional external influences such as electrostatic discharge and (or) thermal annealing. In this paper, a robust fault detection methodology for complex analog CMOS integrated filters is presented. It is based on combining the two types of testing methodologies, Oscillation-Based Testing (OBT) and IDDQ testing, i.e., measuring of the power-supply current ( I D D ). The proposed methodology is applied to the Bi-quad Sallen–Key band-pass (BP) filter cell with relatively complex, two-stage, class-AB-output, operational amplifier (opamp) topology. The filter is custom designed targeting the 180-nm CMOS technology. Hundreds of time-domain simulations and analyses of the circuit output signal are performed in order to obtain the fault dictionary. The presented results show that the proposed hybrid OBT–IDDQ methodology is significantly more efficient in the defects coverage than any of the particular test methodologies alone. Subsequently, the specific algorithm for the defects classification is proposed. In today's health-monitoring applications, there is a growing demand for wireless and wearable acquisition platforms capable of simultaneously gathering multiple bio-signals from multiple body areas. These systems require well-structured software architectures, both to keep different wireless sensing nodes synchronized each other and to flush collected data towards an external gateway. This paper presents a quantitative analysis aimed at validating both the wireless synchronization task (implemented with a custom protocol) and the data transmission task (implemented with the BLE protocol) in a prototype wearable monitoring platform. We evaluated seven frequencies for exchanging synchronization packets (10 Hz, 20 Hz, 30 Hz, 40 Hz, 50 Hz, 60 Hz, 70 Hz) as well as two different BLE configurations (with and without the implementation of a dynamic adaptation of the BLE Connection Interval parameter). Additionally, we tested BLE data transmission performance in five different use case scenarios. As a result, we achieved the optimal performance in the synchronization task (1.18 ticks as median synchronization delay with a Min-Max range of 1.60 ticks and an Interquartile range (IQR) of 0.42 ticks) when exploiting a synchronization frequency of 40 Hz and the dynamic adaptation of the Connection Interval. Moreover, BLE data transmission proved to be significantly more efficient with shorter distances between the communicating nodes, growing worse by 30.5% beyond 8 m. In summary, this study suggests the best-performing network configurations to enhance the synchronization task of the prototype platform under analysis, as well as quantitative details on the best placement of data collectors. Thyroglobulin (Tg) is an iodinated glycoprotein, which is normally stored in the follicular colloid of the thyroid, being a substrate for thyroid hormone production. Since it is produced by well-differentiated thyroid cells, it is considered a reliable tumor marker for patients with differentiated thyroid carcinoma (DTC) during their follow-up after total thyroidectomy and radioiodine ablation. It is used to monitor residual disease and to detect recurrent disease. After total thyroid ablation, unstimulated highly sensitive Tg measurements are sufficiently accurate to avoid exogenous or endogenous thyrotropin (TSH) stimulation and provide accurate diagnostic and prognostic information in the great majority of DTC patients. Adopting sophisticated statistical analysis, i.e., decision tree models, the use of Tg before radioiodine theranostic administration was demonstrated to be useful in refining conventional, pathology-based risk stratification and providing personalized adjuvant or therapeutic radioiodine administrations. The follow-up of DTC patients aims to promptly identify patients with residual or recurrent disease following primary treatment. Paper-based sensors are a new alternative technology for fabricating simple, low-cost, portable and disposable analytical devices for many application areas including clinical diagnosis, food quality control and environmental monitoring. The unique properties of paper which allow passive liquid transport and compatibility with chemicals/biochemicals are the main advantages of using paper as a sensing platform. Depending on the main goal to be achieved in paper-based sensors, the fabrication methods and the analysis techniques can be tuned to fulfill the needs of the end-user. Current paper-based sensors are focused on microfluidic delivery of solution to the detection site whereas more advanced designs involve complex 3-D geometries based on the same microfluidic principles. Although paper-based sensors are very promising, they still suffer from certain limitations such as accuracy and sensitivity. However, it is anticipated that in the future, with advances in fabrication and analytical techniques, that there will be more new and innovative developments in paper-based sensors. These sensors could better meet the current objectives of a viable low-cost and portable device in addition to offering high sensitivity and selectivity, and multiple analyte discrimination. Based on measurements and research, diagnostics of the condition of a structure aims to provide an answer to the question of what the condition of the structure is, and the necessary steps for reconstruction or rehabilitation. Masonry stone construction is one of the oldest methods of construction of building structures. In spite of that, this type of structures does not have fully defined parameters that influence its behavior. The reason for this is the fact that the properties of masonry stone structures differ depending on the basic material (stone) and binding material (mortar), as well as their combination. The paper presents diagnostics of the condition of masonry structures on the Tabija tower building. Tabija, a low tower for cannons, is a fortification structure from the Ottoman period that is the most completely preserved and was registered for the first time in the city plan from 1717. The structure is in poor condition due to a large number of natural and human factors. The paper will present a detailed visual inspection of the structure, as well as tests conducted in the laboratory and in-situ, the calculation, and decisions and proposals for the rehabilitation and/or reconstruction of the considered building of cultural and historical heritage. The proposed inclusion of Internet gaming disorder (IGD) into the upcoming ICD-11 has caused mixed reactions. Having a sound diagnostic framework for defining this new phenomenon has been applauded but concerns have risen regarding overpathologizing a mere pastime activity. The review by Aarseth et al. (2016) provides a fine but one-sided impression on IGD. What has been totally left out in the argumentation is the clinical perspective. The disinfection of deteriogenic microorganisms and the removal of induced chromatic alterations in artworks are still open challenges in the field of conservation. For this purpose, a new alcoholic hydrogel was tested to remove an extensive fungal attack from a multimaterial collage by the artist Alessandro Kokocinski and to mitigate chromatic changes caused by the contamination of its poster paper and plywood support layers. A Gellan gum-based hydrogel was used, which was modified by adding a high concentration of alcohol (66.7% ethanol), to give the system an effective disinfecting agent in addition to the detergent capacity of the gel for water-sensitive works of art. It was successfully tested on samples mimicking the complex stratigraphy of the artwork under study. To create replica mock-ups, the artwork materials and stratigraphy were investigated through diagnostic and laboratory techniques such as multispectral imaging, X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and pyrolysis coupled with gas-chromatography-mass spectrometry. The treatment was shown to have a disinfecting effect on the test samples and did not alter their structure, allowing us to apply the method to the artwork. Children with gifted intellects often earn lower scores on measures of processing speed than their nongifted counterparts. However, neuropsychological research indicates such a profile of scores is likely not due to a true innate neurocognitive processing speed deficit but is rather a statistical artifact resulting from the interference of common cognitive and behavioral idiosyncrasies inherent to giftedness, such as perfectionism and an aversion to completing paper and pencil tasks. The first aim of this study is to identify and explain the relative underperformance of children with gifted intellects on measures of processing speed. The second aim is to develop a neuropsychologically informed framework for clinically assessing processing speed in children with gifted intellects using alternative measures from the WISC–V. Clinical implications are discussed as they relate to the relative disabling effects of common gifted-related idiosyncrasies on the expression of their otherwise intact neuropsychological capabilities. The paper presents the importance of electricity parameters in transient states for assessing the ability of an aircraft's power grid to self-regulate. It has been shown that the quality of electrical energy of an aircraft's power system is influenced by its operating time. Aging changes resulting from long-term operation of the power system cause deterioration of electrical energy parameters, which directly affects airworthiness and flying safety. Maintaining standard energy parameters in transient states is very important to ensure proper operation of the aircraft. The article describes the method of measuring the quality of electricity in transient states, and using the example of the DC power system of the Su 22 aircraft, the essence of its network diagnostics in transient states is presented. Also presented are sample results of research conducted by the authors regarding changes in electrical energy parameters in transient states of the Su 22 aircraft, obtained during its many years of operation. Background: Preterm birth (PTB) is a leading cause of childhood disability, and it has become a key public health priority recognized by the World Health Organization and the United Nations. Objectives: This review will: (1) summarize current practice in the diagnosis and management of PTB, (2) outline developments in precision-based medicine for diagnostics to improve the care provided to pregnant women at risk of PTB, and (3) discuss the implications of current research in personalized medicine and the potential of future advances to influence the clinical care of women at risk of PTB. Methodology: This is a narrative literature review. Relevant journal articles were identified following searches of computerized databases. Key Results: Current and emerging technologies for the utility of personalized medicine in the context of PTB have the potential for applications in: (1) direct diagnostics to identify and target infection as one of the main known causes of PTB, (2) identifying novel maternal and fetal biomarkers, (3) the use of artificial intelligence and computational modeling, and (4) combining methods to enhance diagnosis and treatment. Introduction: Usher syndrome (USH) is a rare autosomal recessive genetic disorder characterized by sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL), vision loss (retinitis pigmentosa), and occasional balance impairment. Depending on the severity and onset of hearing loss and coexisting vestibular dysfunction, USH is divided into three clinical types -- USH1, USH2, USH3 -- as well as atypical USH which combines features of all these three. The purpose of this review is to present the impact of cochlear implantation on speech development in children diagnosed with all types of Usher syndrome. Material and methods: All relevant publications published in from 2013 to 2023 were retrieved from PubMed based on the keywords Usher syndrome, Usher syndrome diagnostics, Usher syndrome hearing loss, Usher syndrome cochlear, and Usher syndrome speech. Exactly 67 papers were selected. Results: Bilateral cochlear implantation in children with Usher syndrome is beneficial for audiological and verbal development provided that hearing loss is detected early and implantation done promptly. In USH1 the preferred age is before 3 in the case of severe to profound congenital SNHL; in USH2 and USH3 the optimal time for implantation is hampered by the difficulty of estimating when hearing loss occurred and its rate of progression. After bilateral cochlear implantation, studies showed improvements in the categories of auditory performance (CAP), speech intelligibility rate (SIR), meaningful auditory integration scale (MAIS), meaningful use of speech scale (MUSS), and speech reception score (SRS), together with good development of speech perception and verbal communication. Conclusions: Early diagnosis (before the onset of vision loss) and early bilateral cochlear implantation in children who have suffered severe to profound SNHL due to Usher syndrome reduces disability and maximizes auditory--oral communication skills, significantly increasing their quality of life. This paper presents a methodology that is designed for rapid exploratory analysis of the outputs from ensembles of climate models, especially when these outputs consist of maps. The approach formalizes and extends the technique of "intermodel empirical orthogonal function" analysis, combining multivariate analysis of variance techniques with singular value decompositions (SVDs) of structured components of the ensemble data matrix. The SVDs yield spatial patterns associated with these components, which we call ensemble principal patterns (EPPs). A unique hierarchical partitioning of variation is obtained for balanced ensembles in which all combinations of factors, such as GCM and RCM pairs in a regional ensemble, appear with equal frequency: suggestions are also proposed to handle unbalanced ensembles without imputing missing values or discarding runs. Applications include the selection of ensemble members to propagate uncertainty into subsequent analyses, and the diagnosis of modes of variation associated with specific model variants or parameter perturbations. In this paper, we report on the use of a local acrylate-based negative photo-polymer deposition technique for the fabrication of 3D microfluidic paper-based analytical devices (3D-μPADs) where the sample flows in both the lateral and vertical directions through multiple stacked layers of porous materials. A simple and inexpensive manufacturing method was used, which is based on the local deposition of a photo-polymer (deposition speed 30 mm/s) on a porous cellulose paper substrate followed by the subsequent exposure (scanning speed 30 mm/s) to a laser source (fibre coupled continuous wave at 405 nm with maximum power of 60 mW), to stack four layers of cellulose paper and make 3D multilayer μPADs. With this technique, we provide a pathway to eliminate the limitations that other reported methods have during the fabrication of μPADs such as the need for multiple sophisticated alignments between adjoining layers and the use of additional tools to ensure adequate contact between the layers. In this study, we demonstrate the usefulness of our four-layer 3D-μPAD for simultaneous detection of three analytes, namely BSA, glucose, nitrite spiked in artificial urine and also the pH of the tested sample, through single step colorimetric assays with the limit of detection found at 0.4 mg/mL for BSA, 14.5 μg/mL for glucose and 2.5 μg/mL for nitrite. Our 3D-μPAD fabrication methodology can also be adapted in more complex analytical assays where multiple steps are needed for applications in point-of-care diagnostics. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Currently, applications of the algorithms based on artificial intelligence (AI) principles can be observed in various fields. This can be also noticed in the wide area of electrical drives. Consideration has been limited to neural networks; however, the tasks for the models can be defined as follows: control, state variable estimation, and diagnostics. In the subsequent sections of this paper, electrical machines, as well as power electronic devices, are assumed as the main objects. This paper describes the basics, issues, and possibilities related to the used tools and explains the growing popularity of neural network applications in automatic systems with electrical drives. The paper begins with the overall considerations; following that, the content proceeds with the details, and two specific examples are shown. The first example deals with a neural network-based speed controller tested in a structure with a synchronous reluctance motor. Then, the implementation of recurrent neural networks as state variable estimators is analyzed. The achieved results present a precise estimation of the load speed and the shaft torque signals from a two-mass system. Objective: To determine whether a smartphone‐obtained image can be used to extrapolate the PCV of canine blood samples. Design: Prospective study of surplus blood obtained from clinical cases. Setting: University teaching hospital. Interventions: Blood samples were placed on filter paper, and images were obtained with a smartphone in different environments. These results were then compared to the PCV measurements on the same samples following the World Health Organization guidelines. Measurements: Sixty‐nine samples were assessed and identified that smartphone images, obtained in a controlled environment, were able to predict the PCV of the samples. This prediction was most accurate when assessing samples of a normal erythroid mass or polycythemic samples. Conclusions: The results of this study suggest that smartphone‐obtained images do have a utility in predicting canine PCV. If this can be incorporated into a smartphone application, there would be scope to use this in low resource settings. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
