This paper presents the first data on the biodiversity of lithophytic algae from Bulgarian megaliths obtained after the application of the direct sampling method, subsequent cultivation, and processing by light microscopy. A rich algal flora was found: 90 species and 1 variety of 65 genera from Cyanoprokaryota/Cyanobacteria (29 species, 13 genera), Chlorophyta (40 species and 1 variety, 38 genera), Streptophyta (5 species, 1 genus), and Ochrophyta (16 species, 13 genera). Among them were the globally rare Pseudodictyochloris multinucleata (Chlorophyta), found for the first time in such lowland and warm habitats, and Scotiella tuberculata (Chlorophyta), for which this is the first finding in the country. Three of the recorded species are conservationally important. The low floristic similarity between the sites (0–33%) shows the diversity of the algal flora, with no common species found for all the megaliths studied. The most widespread were the strongly adaptive and competitive Stichococcus bacillaris, Apatococcus lobatus, and Chloroidium ellipsoidium (Chlorophyta). The correlations estimated between the species number and substrate temperature (18.1–49.6 °C) suggest the prospect of future research related to the impact of global warming. In addition, the study points to the safety aspects as it revealed species from nine potentially toxin-producing cyanoprokaryotic genera that could be harmful to visitors' health. During the past decade, new biological assessment methods have been developed for use in inland waters. Less work has gone into objective testing of the individual methods and their diagnostic or other capabilities, and very little effort has been devoted to comparing methods. This special issue of Hydrobiologia brings together a number of the most recently developed bioassessment methods, or aspects of them, so readers can begin to compare their potential value and practical usefulness. Bioassessment to evaluate stream integrity and determine changes related to point-source discharges is typically focused in wadeable streams, with limited understanding of seasonal and annual variation. We used a multi-year (n = 13), multi-site (n = 5–7), seasonally (spring and fall) sampled dataset to evaluate spatial and temporal patterns in diatom assemblages relative to measured environmental variables, land use, and pulp and paper mill discharges in a wadeable stream (Codorus Creek, PA) and three non-wadeable rivers (Leaf River, MS; McKenzie and Willamette rivers, OR). Analysis of variance (ANOVA) and permutational ANOVA (PERMANOVA) showed that significant spatial differences in commonly used diatom biotic integrity/diagnostic metrics and assemblage structure were common in the wadeable stream, but rare in the non-wadeable rivers. Season-specific diatom patterns were observed in all streams regardless of size, but annual variation was more prevalent in the non-wadeable rivers. Environmental variables explained 35–58% of the variability in diatoms in the spring and 33–50% in the fall, with physical habitat characteristics associated with stream morphology and seasonality more important than those associated with anthropogenic inputs such as land use and point sources. This paper describes the experimental determination of concentration factors (CF) for nickel, ruthenium and antimony in the model diatom Phaeodactylum tricornutum Bohlin (Bacillariophyceae), which was chosen as a representative of marine phytoplankton. Better determinations of these CF are needed to improve the modelling of marine ecosystems at release points, where radioactive pollutants enter the ecosystem, for more accurate predictions of radiation dose to humans caused by these pollutants. A literature study revealed that the currently implemented values of these CF are based on very scarce data, and a computational sensitivity study showed that the radiation dose caused by radioisotopes of these elements depend strongly on the phytoplankton CF. Nutrient-enriched water samples from Swedish coastal waters were used as a medium for growing of the diatom species P. tricornutum and radioactive isotopes of the studied elements were added to the cultures during the exponential growth phase. The radioactivity in the P. tricornutum and in the culture medium were measured separately and used for determination of CF. Conservative estimates of the CF based on this phytoplankton proxy on the present data are 6400 L/kg for nickel, 20,000 L/kg for ruthenium and 890 L/kg for antimony, with P. tricornutum biomass masses referring to dry weight. The estimates for nickel and ruthenium are similar to previously published values, which underpins the credibility of radiation dose calculations based on these values. Both natural and anthropogenic processes can lead to the increasing salinity of surface waters. The knowledge about the ecological consequences of salinization on the biota is limited especially in case of microbiota, like diatoms. We collected the existing knowledge about the relationship between salinity and diatoms in fresh and saline waters. Based on the available papers, conductivity and ion composition are the most important variables shaping diatom communities. Secondary salinization can mask regional differences in diatom assemblages. Trait-based analyses highlight the competitive advantages of motile guild and the extreme trait categories in these environments. The increasing conductivity along a wide conductivity scale decreases the alpha-diversity. Salinization induces the spread and invasion of marine and brackish species into inland freshwaters as well as that of freshwater species tolerating elevated conductivity and/or need specific ions. Concerning food webs, salinity can directly change diatom communities and the subsequent upper trophic levels but most likely this effect manifests as a top-down regulation. Applicable diatom indices are available to assess the level of salinization. Furthermore, diatom-inferred salinity reconstructions are widely applied to assess the past changes of salinity. Anthropogenic forcing caused the biodiversity loss and stability decline of communities. There is still controversy over whether the decline in biodiversity will lead to a decrease in community stability. The stability of biological communities is related to both biodiversity and structure, and this paper aims to reveal the human impacts on diatom communities' biodiversity and structure. We studied the richness, β‐diversity and network distance of diatom communities in Qinghai‐Xizang, Yunnan‐Sichuan and Lower Yangtze River Basin, China through empirical dataset and simulation method. The results showed that the diatoms richness in the Qinghai‐Xizang and the Yunnan‐Sichuan region was lower and the network distance was higher than that of the Lower Yangtze River Basin. β‐diversity in the Lower Yangtze River Basin was the lowest and the diatom network distance responds negatively to human population densities in China. The simulation showed that the network distance kept constant during random species loss, and declined while specialist species were lost or replaced by generalist species. The results suggested diatom communities' homogeneity and stability decline were associated with human activities. Human impacts may cause biodiversity loss targeted to specialist species or no biodiversity loss while generalist species replace those specialist species. A floristic study of the diatoms (Bacillariophyceae) along the Marikina River in the eastern part of Metro Manila, Philippines, recorded at least 140 species belonging to 39 genera. Of these genera, one of the greatest number of species was observed in the genus Gomphonema (18 species). These species were identified and described under the bright field light microscope. Some species were further observed under the scanning electron microscope. A habitat description of the occurrence of the Gomphonema species is given. Twelve (12) out of the 18 species are new records for the country: G. brasiliense subsp. pacificum Moser, Lange-Bertalot & Metzeltin, G. chinense Liu & Kociolek, G. contraturris Lange-Bertalot & E.Reichardt, G. cuneolus E.Reichardt, G. exilissimum (Grunow) Lange-Bertalot & E.Reichardt, G. insigniforme E.Reichardt & Lange-Bertalot, G. javanicum Hustedt, G. kobayasii Kociolek & J.C.Kingston, G. pseudosphaerophorum H. During the process of studying the diatom diversity of Hunan Province, we find that a Cymbella species collected from Xiang River possesses the following diagnostic features:(1)Cells are small and their lengths are less than 29 μm;(2)Valves exhibit slight dorsiventrality;(3)Distal raphe fissures are dorsally deflected;(4)Apical pore fields are very small and composed of 1-3 transapical rows of porelli, which comprise two forms, one is slit-like, similar to the areolae on the valve face, and the other is rounded with internal openings covered by the flap-like silica projections;(5)Striae 10-12/10 μm at the dorsal middle part, 11-13/10 μm at the ventral middle part, and areolae 30-40/10 μm;(6)And 1-2 stigmata exist near the valve ventral central area. After comparing this species with the type population of Cymbella pavanaensis A. Vigneshwaran et al., in this paper, it is identified as C. pavanaensis. In the present paper, for the first time the ability of the porous biosilica originated from three marine diatom strains of 'Nanofrustulum spp.' viz. N. wachnickianum (SZCZCH193), N. shiloi (SZCZM1342), N. cf. shiloi (SZCZP1809), to eliminate MB from aqueous solutions was investigated. The highest biomass was achieved under silicate enrichment for N. wachnickianum and N. shiloi (0.98 g L−1 DW and 0.93 g L−1 DW respectively), and under 15 °C for N. cf. shiloi (2.2 g L−1 DW). The siliceous skeletons of the strains were purified with hydrogen peroxide and characterized by SEM, EDS, the N2 adsorption/desorption, XRD, TGA, and ATR-FTIR. The porous biosilica (20 mg DW) obtained from the strains i.e. SZCZCH193, SZCZM1342, SZCZP1809, showed efficiency in 77.6%, 96.8%, and 98.1% of 14 mg L−1 MB removal under pH 7 for 180 min, and the maximum adsorption capacity was calculated as 8.39, 19.02, and 15.17 mg g−1, respectively. Additionally, it was possible to increase the MB removal efficiency in alkaline (pH = 11) conditions up to 99.08% for SZCZP1809 after 120 min. Simple Summary: During the last glaciation, the nature of the northern hemisphere of the Earth underwent significant changes. Nonetheless, it underwent no less serious changes after the melting of the glacier, when, under the conditions of climate mitigation, the gradual formation of modern landscapes began in the spaces freed from ice. This study is devoted to the reconstruction of the post-glacial environment in one of the regions of Eastern Europe, in the south-eastern part of the Baltics. The uniquely preserved deposits of one of the post-glacial basins discovered here made it possible to reconstruct in detail the changes in climate, vegetation, and aquatic organisms in the time interval of 14–13.4 thousand years ago. The study revealed that during this period there were short-lasting climate fluctuations (warmings and coolings), which caused repeated changes in all components of the local nature. The results of the study contribute to understanding the complex processes of planetary climate formation, as well as the impact of climate on nature both at local and global levels, which is necessary not only for understanding the past, but also for predicting the future of all living organisms on the planet. This paper presents the results of a study on the Kulikovo section (south-eastern Baltic Sea coast), a sediment sequence exposing deposits of a post-glacial basin that existed along the edge of the glacier in the Late Pleistocene. The research was targeted at the reconstruction of the dynamics of the local environmental systems in response to climatic oscillations of the Lateglacial (the Older Dryas—first half of the Allerød). The evolution of the local biotic components on the territories of the Baltic region after the ice retreat is still poorly understood. Data from geochronological, lithological, diatom, algo-zoological and palynological analyses provide a reconstruction of local aquatic and terrestrial biocenoses and their response to short-term warmings and coolings that took place 14,000–13,400 cal yr BP. This study has demonstrated that, during the Older Dryas and first part of the Allerød (GI-1d and GI-1c), the aquatic and terrestrial environment of the Kulikovo basin underwent several changes, resulting in eight stages of the basin evolution, most probably related to the short-term climatic fluctuations that could have had a duration of several decades. The data obtained in this study have revealed the fairly dynamic and complex evolution of the pioneer landscapes, as indicated by the changes in the hydrological regime of the area and by the traced successions of plant communities from the pioneer swampy vegetation to park and real forests towards the middle of the Allerød. The diatom collection of Albert Grunow (1826-1914) is rich in taxonomic types and important, not only for Grunow's own material (slides, samples) and species, but because it also contains a great deal of historical material collected by early phycologists (e. g. de Brébisson, Kützing, William Smith). The collection is housed at the Department of Botany of the Natural History Museum in Vienna (herbarium W). Grunow's collection is accompanied by a catalogue listing all samples Grunow studied and is organised by ascending sample numbers. The information contained in the catalogue includes species lists, collection localities, the origin of the material (such as marine or fossil), collectors and their collection numbers, cross-references to exsiccata containing the same material, preparation types, or the coordinates of particular valves on his slides, and is therefore important to access for current taxonomists. However, one hurdle is deciphering Grunow's handwriting in German cursive script ('Kurrent'). Hence, the goals of this paper are twofold: 1) to provide insights into Grunow's curation methods and available materials, as laid out in eleven pages of instructions (in German) written by Grunow about the collection and the catalogue and 2) to function as a palaeographic aid, which is provided as an electronic supplement, in order to facilitate reading the instructions and catalogue. The latter is done by pairing Grunow's instructions with their transcription and by providing handwriting samples for each letter of the alphabet. The first is achieved by giving an English translation of the instructions and some comments on the materials and methods he used. Lake Naivasha is one of only two large freshwater lakes in the Eastern Rift Valley of Kenya, East Africa. Together with its satellite lakes Crescent Island Crater, Oloidien and Sonachi, it comprises a great variety of pelagic and benthic habitats for aquatic biota, and its sediment record represents a unique archive of past climate change and long-term ecosystem dynamics in equatorial East Africa. This is particularly so because local paleoenvironmental reconstructions can be checked against historical data on the composition of aquatic fauna and flora collected in Lake Naivasha since the early 20th century. Some of the most prominent biological proxies for reconstructing past changes in lakes are diatoms (Bacillariophyta), a group of unicellular autotrophic eukaryotes of which the siliceous skeletons (valves) preserve well in lake sediments and are good indicators for, among others, climate-driven changes in salinity. However, diatom taxonomy and species concepts have changed a lot in recent decades, making it sometimes difficult for non-taxonomists to know which species are concerned in different published studies. This paper provides the currently accepted taxonomic names of the 310 specific and infraspecific diatom taxa reported from Lake Naivasha and its satellite lakes to date, together with their synonyms used in literature concerning these lakes as well as other, commonly used synonyms. Further, a short overview is given of the history of diatom research conducted on materials from Lake Naivasha and its satellite lakes. The present checklist may facilitate the identification and interpretation aspects of future diatom studies on the wider Lake Naivasha ecosystem and on other East African lakes that are less well studied. Amorphic diatomaceous earth is derived from natural sources, and polyamide 11 (PA11) is produced from materials of natural origin. Both of these materials show a low harmfulness to the environment and a reduced carbon footprint. This is why the combination of these two constituents is beneficial not only to improve the physicochemical and mechanical properties of polyamide 11 but also to produce a biocomposite. For the purpose of this paper, the test biocomposite was produced by combining polyamide 11, as well as basic and pre-fractionated diatomaceous earth, which had been subjected to silanization. The produced composites were used to carry out rheological (melt flow rate-MFR), mechanical (tensile strength, bending strength, impact strength), crystallographic (X-ray Diffraction-XRD), thermal and thermo-mechanical (differential scanning calorimetry–DSC, dynamic mechanical thermal analysis–DMTA) analyses, as well as a study of hydrophobic–hydrophilic properties of the material surface (wetting angle) and imaging of the surface of the composites and the fractured specimens. The tests showed that the additive 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) acted as an agent that improved the elasticity of composites and the melt flow rate. Diatoms represent one of the morphologically and taxonomically most diverse groups of microscopic eukaryotes. Light microscopy-based taxonomic identification and enumeration of frustules, the silica shells of these microalgae, is broadly used in aquatic ecology and biomonitoring. One key step in emerging digital variants of such investigations is segmentation, a task that has been addressed before, but usually in manually captured megapixel-sized images of individual diatom cells with a mostly clean background. In this paper, we applied deep learning-based segmentation methods to gigapixel-sized, high-resolution scans of diatom slides with a realistically cluttered background. This setup requires large slide scans to be subdivided into small images (tiles) to apply a segmentation model to them. This subdivision (tiling), when done using a sliding window approach, often leads to cropping relevant objects at the boundaries of individual tiles. We hypothesized that in the case of diatom analysis, reducing the amount of such cropped objects in the training data can improve segmentation performance by allowing for a better discrimination of relevant, intact frustules or valves from small diatom fragments, which are considered irrelevant when counting diatoms. We tested this hypothesis by comparing a standard sliding window / fixed-stride tiling approach with two new approaches we term object-based tile positioning with and without object integrity constraint. With all three tiling approaches, we trained Mask-R-CNN and U-Net models with different amounts of training data and compared their performance. Object-based tiling with object integrity constraint led to an improvement in pixel-based precision by 12–17 percentage points without substantially impairing recall when compared with standard sliding window tiling. We thus propose that training segmentation models with object-based tiling schemes can improve diatom segmentation from large gigapixel-sized images but could potentially also be relevant for other image domains. Bisphenol A (4,4-isopropylidenediphenol, BPA) is an organic compound widely used, e.g., in the production of epoxy resins, plastics, and thermal receipt papers. Unfortunately, bisphenol A has negative effects on human health, which has prompted the search for an effective method of its removal. One of the most promising methods of its elimination is photocatalytic removal. The aim of this study was to design an effective method for the photocatalytic removal of bisphenol A using, for the first time, hierarchical zeolites and ruthenium ion-modified diatom biosilica, and silver as photocatalysts and optimization of the reaction conditions: temperature, pH, and composition of the reaction mixture as well as the electromagnetic wavelength. Additionally, for the first time, the electromagnetic wavelength that would be most suitable for the study was selected. All materials used were initially characterized by XRD and low-temperature nitrogen adsorption/desorption isotherms. Ruthenium ion-modified biosilica proved to be the most effective catalyst for bisphenol A removal, which occurred at a rate higher than 99%. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper, we report new records of rare diatoms that have recently been found in Southern Poland. Planothidium nanum was found only in the upper reaches of the Centuria River, which is not exposed to human influence, while Navicula flandriae was found in two rivers (the Bolina and the Mleczna) affected by salt mine water from hard coal mines. The impact of anthropogenic salinity on diatom communities is as yet poorly documented. Therefore, we conducted a survey on this phenomenon. We surveyed seven sampling sites for diatom assemblages and habitat characteristics, including three sampling sites impacted by mine water. Navicula flandriae was recorded at both sampling sites affected by salt mine water and in two other rivers (the Centuria and the Mitręga), indicating its wide preference for salinity. We confirmed the occurrence of P. nanum at the same site where this species was found and described in our previous paper. In addition, we recorded the occurrence of this species at two other sites in habitats with similar characteristics (lower reaches of the Centuria and Wiercica rivers). Our results indicate a more common occurrence of N. flandriae and P. nanum, which means that further monitoring of diatoms is necessary. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Bacterial transmission to humans can be carried by water and cause enteric diseases, so the objective of this paper is to evaluate the effectiveness of the use of diatoms in the filtration of waterborne bacteria. The study was carried out at Universidad Nacional de Chimborazo, Ecuador; from October 2019 to March 2020, combining culture techniques on blood agar and MacConkey agar, colony quantification and filtration versus filter time and length. 120 dilutions samples of commercial strains of Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus were used to contaminate the water in such a way that the efficiency of filtration in diatoms of different origins could be observed. The results were contrasted with the ranges established by the World Health Organization and positive and negative controls were carried out on the culture media and water. The diatoms of Guayaquil were the ones that induced a better filtration of the water compared to the diatoms of Palmira. When applying the filter bed of 10 cm of diatoms, a growth of 86 CFU/100ml was obtained in 24 hours, while when the amount of the filter was increased to 20 cm, a decrease in the bacterial load of the water was observed by 21 CFU/100ml in 10 hours. According to the range established by the WHO, bacterial growth decreased, which indicates that diatom filters have the ability to retain bacteria. This paper examines the efficacy of diatoms as bioindicators of water quality in the upper reaches of the Great Fish River following a period of reduced flow from drought conditions. Of the five sites, three were sampled three times in an 18 month period while the remaining two were sampled once. As a comparison, one headwater site within Mountain Zebra National Park, situated in the same district, was sampled. A total of 166 diatom taxa belonging to 29 genera were identified. Dominant taxa for the Great Fish River were identified as Amphora pediculus; Epithemia sorex; Nitzschia frustulum; Navicula veneta and Craticula buderi. These species, indicative of high nutrient concentrations and moderately saline to brackish conditions can tolerate low flow conditions. The Generic Diatom Index (GDI), the Specific Pollution sensitivity Index (SPI) the Biological Diatom Index (BDI) and the% Pollution Tolerant Valves (%PTV) – part of the UK Trophic Diatom Index (TDI) were used for interpretation of the results. The indices showed that this river is in poor condition. By comparison the headwater site in the Mountain Zebra National Park had Cocconeis placentula var. euglypta, Achnanthidium minutissimum and Cocconeis placentula var. lineata as dominant species and, using the same indices, the river was classified as in moderate to good condition with respect to water quality. Albert Grunow (1826-1914) was a prolific diatomist, who described thousands of taxa. His work is foundational and greatly improved our knowledge of diatom taxonomy. Grunow's historical collection is still relevant for modern biodiversity research, as it includes many types and other historical material. Thorough taxonomic work considering type and other relevant original material is critical in view of the role of diatoms as aquatic bio-indicator species (e. g. for water quality monitoring purposes), Earth's history, and environmental change modelling. Here, we introduce the Grunow diatom collection at the Department of Botany of the Natural History Museum Vienna (herbarium W), its components and included object types, their organisation and management. The collection is complex for various reasons. For one, it encompasses a great variety of material types (e. g. loose diatomaceous earth in capsules; samples mounted on card, glass, or mica; microscope slides and other preparations; drawings; accession books (= catalogue); literature annotated by Grunow). Second, its components are interlinked and need to be considered together for identifying and locating specimens, which therefore involves a series of steps. Didymosphenia geminata is a species of freshwater diatom that is known as invasive and is propagating quickly around the world. While invasive species are generally considered a nuisance, this paper attempts to find useful applications for D. geminata in the biomedical field and wastewater remediation. Here, we highlight the polysaccharide-based stalks of D. geminata that enable versatile potential applications and uses as a biopolymer, in drug delivery and wound healing, and as biocompatible scaffolding in cell adhesion and proliferation. Furthermore, this review focuses on how the polysaccharide nature of stalks and their metal-adsorption capacity allows them to have excellent wastewater remediation potential. This work also aims to assess the economic impact of D. geminata, as an invasive species, on its immediate environment. Potential government measures and legislation are recommended to prevent the spread of D. geminata, emphasizing the importance of education and collaboration between stakeholders. Algal epiphytes attached on three dominant aquatic macrophytes (Pistia striatotes, Eichhornia crassipes and Ipomoea aquatic) were investigated as part of a preliminary study on the ecological assessment of Sta. Cruz River, which has been used primarily for agriculture and fishery. In total, 22 algal taxa were identified on the studied macrophytes: 8 Chlorophyta, 4 Cyanobacteria, 7 Bacillariophyta, and 3 Euglenophyta. The taxa in this paper represent 8 classes, 16 orders, 20 families, 22 genera and 22 species based on the latest algal taxonomical nomenclature. Among these taxa, the existence of a rare filamentous cyanobacteria, Planktothrix compressa (Utermöhl) Anagnostidis et Komárek is described for the first time in the Philippines. A species of diatom is also reported in this study for the first time based on recent algal taxonomic nomenclature and this is Ulnaria ulna (Nitzsch) Compère that is based on the former name of Synedra ulna (Nitzsch) Ehrenberg. These taxonomic records proved that aquatic macrophytes represents a unique habitat for novel and diverse types of algal flora, which demands further investigations in the country. Recent studies show that all evaluated Cyanobacteria , diatoms and haptophytes, major constituents of freshwater and marine phytoplankton, emit methane during photosynthesis. This is independent of external methylated precursors, whose demethylation by prokaryotic phytoplankton (and other microorganisms) has been already shown to be a potent methane source. Methane is the second most significant anthropogenically influenced greenhouse gas with a global warming potential 85 times higher than carbon-dioxide, over a period of 20 years. Atmospheric methane has been steadily increasing, yet its natural sources are not well constrained, with the largest uncertainties occurring in aquatic ecosystems. Already for several decades, increasing evidence has been pointing out that methane produced under oxic conditions through non-traditional pathways (i.e. not archaeal methanogenesis) significantly contributes to the methane flux from marine and freshwater environments. This paper highlights the potential significance of phytoplankton as methane producers, particularly through the ubiquitous process of photosynthesis. Currently, available data serve as a proof of principle for the process and its potential rates, yet further extensive research is required to successfully provide emission estimates at a global scale. The aims of this paper were to describe seasonal changes in the qualitative and quantitative composition of diatom taxa and the potential application of benthic diatoms for ecological status evaluation. Diatom indices (IPS and TI) were calculated from data from three different locations along a longitudinal profile of the Bunica, a small karstic river in Bosnia and Herzegovina. A total of 147 taxa were recorded in 12 samples. The most common taxa were Meridion circulare (Greville) C.Agardh and Ulnaria ulna (Nitzsch) Compère. Physical and chemical analyses showed low concentrations of nutrients, good oxygenation, typical pH for carbonate bed/origin and generally oligotrophic conditions and high ecological status. All sites had similar physico-chemical conditions and there were only few seasonal differences. Ordination of the diatom data showed that samples showed neither longitudinal nor seasonal patterns. Median value for IPS (16.8) and for TI (7.3) can be possible "expected" values for ecological status assessment for small karstic rivers in the Mediterranean region. We propose the use of the phytobenthos Intercalibration Common Metric (pICM - an index that combines the IPS and TI) as a national metric for countries developing WFD diatom methods at a late stage. One situation is described, and a solution, which is potentially transferable to other locations in Bosnia and Herzegovina and also to other countries facing similar challenges. This paper describes a new species of the genus Cymbella C.A. Agardh from an alpine lake in the Hengduan Mountains of southwestern China. A detailed morphological description of the new species, named Cymbella luoyulanae sp. nov., is presented; the description is based on light and scanning electron microscopy. The main features of C. luoyulanae are strongly dorsiventral valves with strongly reverse-lateral raphe branches near the proximal ends, a large central area occupying approximately a half of the width with the valve and slit-like areolae comprising striae that may be unseriate or partially biseriate. The new species has morphological characteristics that resemble those of C. heihainensis Y.Li et Gong, C. modicepunctata Krammer and C. asiatica Metzeltin, Lange-Bertalot et Y.Li, but it differs from these three species in details of size, valve shape, striae density, central area, and number of stigmata. Establishing ecological assessment schemes is challenging when gradients are short and there are no sites with minimal anthropogenic alteration against which metrics can be calibrated. This is the situation for large rivers in Romania and this paper describes efforts to establish meaningful ecological status concepts. The intercalibration exercise, conducted as part of Water Framework Directive (WFD) implementation, has provided a metric ("phytobenthos Intercalibration Common Metric", pICM) which allows ecological status in different countries to be expressed on a common scale. The average boundary positions of countries who participated in this exercise provided a "common view" of status and, together with pICM, offer an "off-the-shelf" solution for countries unable to develop independent methods. However, even when expressed as pICM, Romanian phytobenthos data have a weak relationship with nutrients. Analysis of chemical data and comparison with similar data from elsewhere in Europe confirm that there are few sites with significantly elevated nutrient concentrations. Incorporation of the Romanian data into the larger dataset produced a stronger relationship from which the status of phytobenthos in very large rivers in Romania could be confirmed. The Antarctic diatom flora has been at the centre of interest of many studies in past decades. The present paper brings new information on the species richness, biogeography and community composition of diatoms on the Ardley Island, South Shetland Islands. One fresh-water and ten soil samples had been collected from the Antarctic Special protected area (ASPA) in the spring of 2019. The following analysis revealed eighty-six diatom taxa in well-developed communities, dominated by Luticola muticopsis, L. truncata, Pinnularia australoschoenfelderi, P. austroshetlandica and P. borealis. According to the current biogeographical knowledge, the majority of species have restricted distribution among the Antarctic Realm; 46.5% of them are reported from various islands of the Maritime Antarctic Region. Based on the dominance of species as Luticola muticopsis and L. truncata and their ecological preferences, we concluded that the species composition of the diatom communities is driven by high nutrient input from breeding seabirds and the moisture availability during the austral summer. Iconella guatimalensis is a large freshwater diatom, initially described in material from Guatemala and reported in various locations in the Neotropics. However, it has only been confirmed in two locations for modern environments in Mexico. In this paper we report the presence of this species in low abundances (<10%) in the Holocene sedimentary records of lakes Santa María del Oro (SMO) and Coatetelco (COA). A morphological description was integrated from observations of several specimens in light and scanning electron microscopy. The distribution of this species in the two lakes coincides with time windows that have been identified as shallow-water environments and dry climates (Late Classic Drought A.D. 600-1000 and the Little Ice Age, A.D. 1315-1860). The distribution of I. guatimalensis also agrees with increases in the abundances of other benthic diatoms in SMO, corroborating that it can be considered as an indicator of periods with low lake levels. Background and aims: In 2013, blooms similar to those produced by Didymosphenia geminata (Lyngbye) M. Schmidt around the world, were detected in the Grande River basin, Tierra del Fuego province, and in 2014 in de las Vueltas River in Santa Cruz province. The aim of this paper is to analyze the valve morphology and morphometry of these materials to establish if they correspond to D. geminata or to other species of the genus that is producing the massive growth in southern Patagonia. M&M: Samples were collected at Grande River in 2013 and 2015 and, in de las Vueltas River in 2015 and 2016. Samples were analyzed with light and electron microscopy. For morphometric analyses 100 specimens from each sample were measured and statistical analyses were carried out using the R statistical package. Results: The studied populations have the same fine morphology described for other populations collected in Patagonia. Nevertheless, in some sampling sites from Santa Cruz province, we found a morphotype with a markedly smaller size, subcapitated poles, little marked constrictions of the poles, a broad central area (relative to cell size) and 1 to 3 stigmata, that was never reported in South America. Conclusions: The studied populations correspond to D. geminata ssp. geminata Metzeltin & Lange-Bertalot. From a morphological point of view the smaller morphotype present in Santa Cruz belongs to the same subspecies but can be easily misidentified during the routine monitoring programs carried out with light microscope due its size and valve outline. In this paper we inventory the continental diatom taxa described from inland waters in China, from the first species descriptions dating back to 1848 through 2019. China's geography and hydrography are complex, including the world's highest mountains, many large rivers, salty lakes, and large karst regions. From this area, a total of 1128 taxa have been described from China over this time period. We examine the number of taxa described in ca. 20-year intervals and note the periods of time of no to few descriptions, versus time intervals with many taxon descriptions. Early on, taxon descriptions of freshwater diatoms from China were done by mostly by Europeans working alone, and the time frame of 1948 to 1967 had few descriptions, as a devasting famine and the cultural revolution impacted scientific work and productivity. B.V. Skvortzov produced a large number of taxon descriptions, during his time in residence in Harbin, later while in Sao Paulo, Brazil, and even posthumously. More recently, a wide range of labs and collaborations across China, and with a diverse array of international partners, is ushering in a new, robust era of research on the biodiversity of continental diatoms. Diatom frustules, with their diverse three-dimensional regular silica structures and nano- to micrometer dimensions, represent perfect model systems for biomimetic fabrication of materials and devices. The structure of a frustule of the diatom Didymosphenia geminata was nondestructively visualized using nano X-ray computed tomography (XCT) and transferred into a CAD file for the first time. Subsequently, this CAD file was used as the input for an engineered object, which was manufactured by applying an additive manufacturing technique (3D Selective Laser Melting, SLM) and using titanium powder. The self-similarity of the natural and the engineered objects was verified using nano and micro XCT. An overview of the diatom research in the DR Congo is given based on literature data starting in 1938 with the work of Zanon and excluding the East African Lakes as these were already discussed in previous papers. For each literature record the diatom genera mentioned are presented as well as all diatom taxa described from the Congo as new. In total, 106 new taxa were documented, of which Nitzschia with 40 taxa is far the most important genus followed by Navicula s.l. and Pinnularia and with 15 and 13 taxa respectively. Particular attention was paid to the local research of students found in unpublished theses at bachelor, licentiate, master and PhD level. Diatom records in these works are almost all restricted to genus level, although in the last decade an attempt to delimit species can be observed. This accompanies the renewed taxonomic interest in the Congo basin during the last decade. This paper reports the third in a series of three studies of a unique aquatic phytobial consortium that developed in a polluted ditch situated near an old chromium waste landfill. The ditch is a specific ecological niche having increased loads of several chemical compounds, including extreme hexavalent chromium concentrations up to two thousand times the allowed limit (0.02 mg dm−3 in Poland) in the more polluted section B; the moderate concentrations in section A are twice the limit. We focus on the microscopic algae group of diatoms, one of the most important components of the phytobial consortium, and continue our novel attempt to analyze the bioremediation potential of the entire consortium under those environmental conditions. We used numerical methods to analyze differences in diatom biodiversity between sections A and B, and assessed the relations between diatoms and selected water chemistry properties, including hexavalent chromium, chlorides and sulphates, the latter two known to positively influence the resistance of algae to the impact of hexavalent chromium. We noted 37 diatom taxa in section A of the ditch and 30 in section B. The most frequently observed diatoms were cosmopolitan taxa and/or characteristic taxa of saline waters. Sulphates were the most important factor influencing the diatom composition in the ditch, explaining 52% of the total variability, followed by chlorides (30%) and hexavalent chromium (9%). Gomphonema acuminatum , Melosira varians and Nitzschia frustulum var. f rustulum were found to be most resistant to hexavalent chromium and were selected for further experimental studies on their biotechnological usefulness. Phytoplankton in karst lakes is characterized by co-occurrence of chrysophytes (Chrysophyceae), dinoflagellates (Dinophyceae), and diatoms (Bacillariophyta) as the most diverse and abundant group. Using Reynolds functional approach in ecological phytoplankton investigations makes karstic lakes comparable and facilitates interpretation of their responses to changing environmental conditions. Accurate taxonomic identification to species level, based on precise resolution of specific characteristics by electron microscopy, is essential in order to correctly associate species into coda. This paper defines the most abundant centric diatoms and coexisting species in the phytoplankton of karst lakes in Croatia as a contribution to better description of phytoplankton functional groups dominated by centric diatoms. Several representatives for diatom-based Reynolds functional groups of four lakes in Croatia were described in this paper: Pantocsekiella costei and Stephanocostis chantaica for group A, Pantocsekiella ocellata and Cyclotella distinguenda for group B, and Stephanodiscus neoastraea for group C, together with their ecological preferences which clearly correspond to pertaining functional classification. This paper is the first integrated account of the sedimentology, stratigraphy, and vertebrate paleontology for the marine strata of the Chilcatay Formation exposed at Ullujaya, Pisco basin (southern Peru). An allostratigraphic framework for the investigated strata was established using geological mapping (1:4000 scale) and conventional sedimentary facies analysis and resulted in recognition of two unconformity-bounded allomembers (designated Ct1 and Ct2 in ascending order). The chronostratigraphic framework is well constrained by integration of micropaleontological data and isotope geochronology and indicates deposition during the early Miocene. The marine vertebrate fossil assemblage is largely dominated by cetaceans (odontocetes), whereas isolated teeth and spines indicate a well-diversified elasmobranch assemblage. Our field surveys, conducted to evaluate the paleontological sensitivity of the investigated strata, indicate that vertebrate remains only came from a rather restricted stratigraphic interval of the Ct1 allomember and reveal the high potential for these sediments to yield abundant and scientifically significant fossil assemblages. The paper presents data on the composition of epilithic diatoms in the Raška River. Samples were collected by scraping stone surfaces with a brush from 5 localities along the Raška River in April, June, August and November 2011 and March and May 2012. Diatom frustules were cleaned using cold acid method, and mounted on permanent slides. An investigation of the Raška River resulted in description of 106 diatom taxa. The most species rich genera are Navicula (10), Gomphonema (10) and Nitzschia (9), while other genera are presented with one or more species. Detailed floristic analysis of the benthic diatom flora in this river has not been conducted before. Therefore, this paper provides a groundwork for future researches. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Contemporary assessment of the ecological status of aquatic ecosystems is based on various groups of organisms, including diatoms. Biological assessment, implemented by the Water Framework Directive, has been applied worldwide for more than 15 years. Currently, the most basic "tool" used in biomonitoring are diatom indices, which are routinely applied in Europe and other countries around the world. In Poland, the diatom indices have been used for over 5 years, which is a period of time allowing to summarize and evaluate the effectiveness of these methods in the assessment of aquatic ecosystems. The purpose of this work was to analyse the use of diatom indices in the biomonitoring of surface water by collecting data on the possibilities and limitations of using diatom indices for the objective assessment of water quality. Attention was paid to mistakes made in the course of biological assessment performed with the use of diatom phytobenthos, which have a significant impact on the obtained results. The paper also contains suggestions for introducing several important changes in biological monitoring, which will improve its quality and efficiency in assessing the ecological status of various aquatic ecosystems. This paper introduces the concept of ‘Precision Mining’ of metals which can be defined as a process for the selective in situ uptake of a metal from a material or media, with subsequent retrieval and recovery of the target metal. In order to demonstrate this concept nanoscale zerovalent iron (nZVI) was loaded onto diatomaceous earth (DE) and tested for the selective uptake of Cu from acid mine drainage (AMD) and subsequent release. Batch experiments were conducted using the AMD and nZVI-DE at 4.0–16.0 g/L. Results demonstrate nZVI-DE as highly selective for Cu removal with >99% uptake recorded after 0.25 h when using nZVI-DE concentrations ≥12.0 g/L, despite appreciable concentrations of numerous other metals in the AMD, namely: Co, Ni, Mn and Zn. Cu uptake was maintained in excess of 4 and 24 h when using nZVI-DE concentrations of 12.0 and 16.0 g/L respectively. Near-total Cu release from the nZVI-DE was then recorded and attributed to the depletion of the nZVI component and the subsequent Eh, DO and pH recovery. This novel Cu uptake and release mechanism, once appropriately engineered, holds great promise as a novel ‘Precision Mining’ process for the rapid and selective Cu recovery from acidic wastewater, process effluents and leach liquors. Forested catchments are generally assumed to provide higher quality water in opposition to agricultural and urban catchments. However, this should be tested in various ecological contexts and through the study of multiple variables describing water quality. Indeed, interactions between ecological variables, multiple land use and land cover (LULC) types, and water quality variables render the relationship between forest cover and water quality highly complex. Furthermore, the question of the scale at which land use within stream catchments most influences stream water quality and ecosystem health remains only partially answered. This paper quantifies, at the regional scale and across five natural ecoregions of Wallonia (Belgium), the forest cover effect on biological water quality indices (based on diatoms and macroinvertebrates) at the riparian and catchment scales. Main results show that forest cover – considered alone – explains around one third of the biological water quality at the regional scale and from 15 to 70% depending on the ecoregion studied. Forest cover is systematically positively correlated with higher biological water quality. When removing spatial, local morphological variations, or population density effect, forest cover still accounts for over 10% of the total biological water quality variation. Partitioning variance shows that physico-chemical water quality is one of the main drivers of biological water quality and that anthropogenic pressures often explain an important part of it (shared or not with forest cover). The proportion of forest cover in each catchment at the regional scale and across all ecoregions but the Loam region is more positively correlated with high water quality than when considering the proportion of forest cover in the riparian zones only. This suggests that catchment-wide impacts and a fortiori catchment-wide protection measures are the main drivers of river ecological water quality. However, distinctive results from the agricultural and highly human impacted Loam region show that riparian forests are positively linked to water quality and should therefore be preserved. The diatoms are one of the most important groups of organisms for biomonitoring studies. In Turkey, most previous applications of diatoms to water quality monitoring have focused on the pennate diatoms, with almost no attention given to the centric forms. The paper presents the centric diatoms in some river catchments in Central Anatolia (Konya closed catchment and Kızılırmak) and Western Anatolia (Marmara, Sakarya, Susurluk, Akarçay, Küçük Menderes, and Meriç-Ergene in the Marmara and Aegean regions). The survey of these catchments is based on samples collected between 2009 and 2013 from 33 different locations, including some springs from Türkmen Mountain and Domaniç forest, as well as small streams and big rivers of the Anatolian Peninsula. Diatom biosilica may offer an interesting perspective in the search for sustainable solutions meeting the high demand for heterogeneous catalysts. Diatomaceous earth (diatomite), i.e., fossilized diatoms, is already used as adsorbent and carrier material. While diatomite is abundant and inexpensive, freshly harvested and cleaned diatom cell walls have other advantages, with respect to purity and uniformity. The present paper demonstrates an approach to modify diatoms both in vivo and in vitro to produce a porous aluminosilicate that is serving as a potential source for sustainable catalyst production. The obtained material was characterized at various processing stages with respect to morphology, elemental composition, surface area, and acidity. The cell walls appeared normal without morphological changes, while their aluminum content was raised from the molar ratio n(Al):n(Si) 1:600 up to 1:50. A specific surface area of 55 m²/g was measured. The acidity of the material increased from 149 to 320 µmol NH3/g by ion exchange, as determined by NH3 TPD. Finally, the biosilica was examined by an acid catalyzed test reaction, the alkylation of benzene. While the cleaned cell walls did not catalyze the reaction at all, and the ion exchanged material was catalytically active. The marine diatom Nitzschia dentatum sp. nov. isolated from seawater samples of Kudat and N. johorensis sp. nov. isolated from beach sand samples of Sibu Island, Malaysia, have been described in this paper. Morphological identification, molecular phylogeny and toxin analyses were executed on the pure non-axenic algal cultures designated as KD89 and PS8, respectively. The main distinguishing feature of N. dentatum sp. nov. compared to other species is the jaggedcingulum structure which is only unique to this species. Meanwhile, N. johorensis sp. nov.is strongly characterized by the 'hantzschioid' and 'nitzschioid' symmetry dimorphisms; a common diagnostic feature but rarely described in other Nitzschia species. Identification of both strains was made based on the frustule diagnostic features and verified using the partial large ribosomal subunit DNA sequences. The results have confirmed that these two speciesare independent entities and novel species that have not been documented elsewhere. A notable finding from the Maximum Likelihood (ML), Maximum Parsimony (MP) and Bayesian Index (BI) analyses have also revealed that Nitzschia species that have indentation in the middle of valves have been consistently grouped as same clade with high bootstrap values. The extracts of both species did not show detectable amount of domoicacid and have therefore, been classified as non-toxic. Morphological variability of the nanoplanktonic diatom Thalassiosira laevis from coastal waters of Province of Buenos Aires (Argentina). Despite the fact that the genus Thalassiosira was previous and extensively studied including ultrastructural analysis of species found in phytoplanktonic samples collected from marine waters of Argentina, nanoplanktonic species have been frequently overlooked. This paper is devoted to show the morphological variation of Thalassiosira laevis, a nanoplanktonic species collected from marine coastal waters of the Province of Buenos Aires, to compare Argentinean material with those from China, Korea and Brazil described in the literature, and to record it for the first time from Argentina. Contaminant-related stress on aquatic biota is difficult to assess when lethal impacts are not observed. Diatoms, by displaying deformities (teratologies) in their valves, have the potential to reflect sub-lethal responses to environmental stressors such as metals and organic compounds. For this reason, there is great interest in using diatom morphological aberrations in biomonitoring. However, the detection and mostly the quantification of teratologies is still a challenge; not all studies have succeeded in showing a relationship between the proportion of abnormal valves and contamination level along a gradient of exposure. This limitation in part reflects the loss of ecological information from diatom teratologies during analyses when all deformities are considered. The type of deformity, the severity of aberration, species proneness to deformity formation, and propagation of deformities throughout the population are key components and constraints in quantifying teratologies. Before a metric based on diatom deformities can be used as an indicator of contamination, it is important to better understand the “ecological signal” provided by this biomarker. Using the overall abundance of teratologies has proved to be an excellent tool for identifying contaminated and non-contaminated environments (presence/absence), but refining this biomonitoring approach may bring additional insights allowing for a better assessment of contamination level along a gradient. The dilemma: are all teratologies significant, equal and/or meaningful in assessing changing levels of contamination? This viewpoint article examines numerous interrogatives relative to the use of diatom teratologies in water quality monitoring, provides selected examples of differential responses to contamination, and proposes solutions that may refine our understanding and quantification of the stress. This paper highlights the logistical problems associated with accurately evaluating and interpreting teratologies and stimulates more discussion and research on the subject to enhance the sensitivity of this metric in bioassessments. Anthropogenic eutrophication in aquatic ecosystems has had significant negative effects on biodiversity and human wellbeing. Improving our understanding of the ways in which biological communities respond to eutrophication underlies biodiversity conservation, and diversity metrics like species richness and evenness are often used to assess environmental impacts on biodiversity. However, such studies mainly consider overall gain and loss, ignoring species replacement in community succession. This paper combines paleolimnology and network science to propose a heterogeneity index (H) to measure community successions by linking long-term changes in community structure with environmental stress. Eight lakes of different types in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River Basin (MLYB) were selected, and we focused on diatom communities to reconstruct their ecological trajectories after significant anthropogenic impact. The combined results suggested that human impacts have caused eutrophication in each lake since the 1950s, but led to different degrees of impact on the diatom communities. In hypereutrophic lakes, diatom assemblages shifted to high-nutrient tolerance and the proportions of epiphytic-benthic species decreased, while in mildly eutrophic lakes, a switch to mild-nutrient tolerant assemblages occurred in planktonic and epiphytic-benthic species with no change in epiphytic-benthic proportions. The H of diatom communities declined in hypereutrophic lakes, but changed little in mildly eutrophic lakes after the 1950s. Meanwhile, no regular changes in diversity indicators such as richness, evenness and the Jaccard-index occurred with lake eutrophication. The ordered species turnover in nutrient-enriched diatom communities may account for the discrepancies in H and the above indices, such as ordered epiphytic-benthic species being replaced by higher nutrient-tolerant and planktonic species with no necessarily attendant reduction in species richness. By quantifying the alteration of species associations without being influenced by species diversity, the H index effectively reveals the succession of diatom communities, and can therefore serve as a complementary indicator of biodiversity. In this work, the valve fine structure, morphology, and dimensions of the epibenthic diatoms living on the marine hydroid Eudendrium racemosum Cavolini were investigated through SEM analysis. Hydroid samples were collected from the Ligurian Sea (Mediterranean Sea), from October 2002 to October 2003, with monthly frequency, allowing definition of the annual cycle of diatom communities. Following several taxonomic/systematic papers, this floristics paper documents 32 new records of diatoms (13 araphid, 17 biraphid, 2 monoraphid), which have been classified into different growth forms (adnate, erect, motile, tube-dwelling). Moreover, new information on morphologic data and biodiversity in the Mediterranean Sea are offered, indicating their ecological preferences. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
