Digital heritage portal interfaces are generally similar to digital library and search engine interfaces in displaying search results as a list of brief metadata records. The knowledge organization and search result display of these systems are item-centric, with little support for identifying relationships between items. This paper proposes a knowledge graph system and visualization interface as a promising solution for digital heritage systems to support users in browsing related items, understanding the relationships between items, and synthesizing a narrative on an issue. The paper discusses design issues for the knowledge graph, graph database, and graph visualization, and offers recommendations based on the authors' experience in developing three knowledge graph systems for archive and digital humanities resources: the Zubir Said personal archive collection at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts, Singapore; Singapore Pioneers social network; and Polyglot Medicine knowledge graph of Asian traditional and herbal medicine. This paper analyzes the emergence of the paper as a kind of writing in the area of the Humanities that, in recent times, and with institutional support, has been imposed as the nearly unique and acceptable kind of academic discourse. A number of new metrics based on social media platforms—grouped under the term “altmetrics”—have recently been introduced as potential indicators of research impact. Despite their current popularity, there is a lack of information regarding the determinants of these metrics. Using publication and citation data from 1.3 million papers published in 2012 and covered in Thomson Reuters’ Web of Science as well as social media counts from Altmetric.com, this paper analyses the main patterns of five social media metrics as a function of document characteristics (i.e., discipline, document type, title length, number of pages and references) and collaborative practices and compares them to patterns known for citations. Results show that the presence of papers on social media is low, with 21.5% of papers receiving at least one tweet, 4.7% being shared on Facebook, 1.9% mentioned on blogs, 0.8% found on Google+ and 0.7% discussed in mainstream media. By contrast, 66.8% of papers have received at least one citation. Our findings show that both citations and social media metrics increase with the extent of collaboration and the length of the references list. On the other hand, while editorials and news items are seldom cited, it is these types of document that are the most popular on Twitter. Similarly, while longer papers typically attract more citations, an opposite trend is seen on social media platforms. Finally, contrary to what is observed for citations, it is papers in the Social Sciences and humanities that are the most often found on social media platforms. On the whole, these findings suggest that factors driving social media and citations are different. Therefore, social media metrics cannot actually be seen as alternatives to citations; at most, they may function as complements to other type of indicators. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper evaluates the impacts of income inequality on life expectancy in African countries. The empirical analysis has been performed on a panel dataset of 52 African nations covering the period of 1995 to 2018. For estimating the inequality-health relationship, I have used Two-Stage Least Squares (2SLS) technique and a Panel Error Correction Model (PECM). The longrun cointegrating relationship was estimated using a Panel Dynamic Ordinary Least Square (PDOLS) estimator. The outcomes suggest that income inequality has negatively affected life expectancy at birth in the African continent overall. Though income inequality seems to have improved health in the short-run, in the long-run, income inequality had deleterious effects. Introduction: Hospitals implement artificial intelligence, big data, and telehealth to accelerate digital transformation and improve quality standards. However, their corporate communication strategies remain very conservative (brochures, magazines, websites) and inconsistent with their ambitious organizational goals. Objective: This literature review-based paper analyzes how hospitals should use technology to revamp their online communication strategies and build more meaningful brands. Methodology: To do that, we conducted a literature review on digital hospitals, their branding strategies, and their stakeholders' humanistic needs. Based on that, we proposed an online communication model to help hospitals build credible brands. Conclusion: We concluded that these organizations should focus their communication efforts on sharing credible content that describes how their medical initiatives improve society; they should assist their stakeholders in enhancing their global understanding of healthcare; and they should help the Digital Communication Unit lead an intellectual reflection about how to develop a smart hospital from a technology and humanistic perspective. The main aim of the paper is to analyse T. G Masaryk's ideas about the importance of education in democratic systems. In particular, the study analyses the ideas that Masaryk associates directly or indirectly with the nature of democracy or with the improvement of the democratic system through changes in the education system. The article focuses on the relevance of communication studies for human sciences. Communication studies is often proposed as a synthetic approach to the human sciences outright, an interdisciplinary inquiry capable of linking the researches of specialized human sciences to the philosophical foundations of the project of human scientific inquiry itself. The author says that from the standpoint of the relation between philosophy and the human sciences, the constitution of perception, institutions and thought by media of communication is the thesis proper to communication studies, the thesis from which its larger significance derives. According to the author, by describing the precise point at which a theory of communication diverges from a theory of scientific meaning, it is possible to note a significant convergence between phenomenology and a Marxist critique of a semiotic theory of language.

This paper attempts to answer whether the property of "efficacy" can be attributed to constitutive rules. In particular, according to Di Lucia, I will point out some problems that the "semantic conception of efficacy" has concerning constitutive and regulative rules. Then, the main goal of the paper will be to reflect on the possibility of the efficacy of constitutive rules by means of a complex case that the semantic conception seems to disregard: The case of the cheater. Does the action of the cheater show the inefficacy of constitutive rules? Does she play the game while breaking the rule? Can the semantic conception of efficacy explain this situation, or do we need a more flexible concept of efficacy that takes nomotropism into account? This paper develops an interpretation about the systematic role of the logical movement in Hegel's later philosophy, as well as offers a historical-genetic hypothesis for understanding the development of the unification of logic and metaphysics first applied, in a consolidated way, in the Phenomenology of Spirit. More specifically, we draw from the differentiation between Logic (die Logik) and the logical (das logische) the resource for explaining Hegel's metacategorial notion of his method of autonomous negation, extended both to logic, philosophy of nature and philosophy of spirit as diverse disciplines. Henceforth, we show how the metacategorial understanding of negation has its emergence from the systematic adjustments that Hegel makes while still in Jena and how the successful application of this method operated as a point of resolution of his philosophical impasses. This paper provides an introduction to the history of the concept of "emerging infectious diseases" (EID) and reflects on how humanities and social science scholars have interacted with it. It starts with a chronological outline of the coinage of the concept in the early 1990s in the wake of the shocks provoked by Ebola and HIV/AIDS, which disrupted the idea that the West was transitioning from a period of infectious diseases to one of chronic diseases. We argue that humanities and social science scholars in disciplines such as history, anthropology, STS, and literature studies have critically explored the concept, showing how entrenched it was in the perceptions of the US and Europe about threats posed by the rest of the globe. Moreover, we explore how scholars in the humanities have used the EID concept to comment on contemporary realities and mobilized it to create dialogues with scientists, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. Subsequently, we explore how the growing contemporary interest in EID has pushed historians to research the ontological and epistemological factors that enabled the "emergence" of diseases long before the invention of the EID concept, such as plague, Chagas disease, and sleeping sickness, as well as the factors that transformed these and other emerging diseases into pandemics. We conclude by outlining a few neglected factors in the EID literature that could be addressed: the circulation and reception of the concept outside of the West, the examination of EID as a problem for wild animals and not just for humans, and global histories of disease emergence as an epistemological and social process. This paper presents a new method for generating artworks that extends the classical anamorphic archetype to use freeform reflective and refractive media and 3D surfaces instead of images. The methodology uses a mix of raytracing and surface deformation techniques to determine the proper deformation the object should undergo to be corrected by the optical tool once viewed by the observer in a specific location. Our approach also includes an optimization process that modifies the point of view and the location of the target image to avoid unwanted optical effects or occlusions. The purpose of this paper is to show how important it is to consider intradisciplinary features - a discipline and its characteristics - and interdisciplinary features - the relationship between this discipline and others that it intertwines with in science. We analyzed, both rhetorically (GIL, 2011) and linguistically (HYLAND, 1998, 2004, 2002, 2012), 24 abstracts taken from two journals on Language and Linguistics. The results show that, in spite of being part of Human Sciences, in the journals concerned, Language and Linguistics features interface with Biological disciplines, which add their scientific beliefs in their practices and influence on rhetoric and modalization - the use of hedges and boosters - in published abstracts. In December 2021, the Canadian Association of Research Libraries (CARL) released the CARL Library Impact Framework (CLIF). While library impact has been a topic of discussion for many years, the CLIF offers a new contribution to the dialogue on demonstrating research libraries' impact. The concept of impact pathways was borrowed from the Federation for the Humanities and Social Sciences report entitled Approaches to Assessing Impacts in the Humanities and Social Sciences. To realize the impact pathways concept, the CLIF has adapted a logic model framework. This approach provides users of the CLIF a way to represent a more complete arc of research libraries' influence, systematically and visually. By design, the CLIF encourages the use of assessment techniques and tools beyond the quantitative data collection and descriptive statistics often used by research libraries. The status of French as a language has improved to some extent in recent years as a result of the exchange and blending of cultures from various nations. Each language, including French, must undergo a protracted process in order to become more widely spoken. It is essential to develop top-notch French interpreters in order to lower the barriers preventing cross-border communication. The teaching of French interpretation has recently received more attention in many colleges, but the issue of a single teaching method has long persisted. In recent years, a new approach to teaching the liberal arts has emerged. Its main goal is to implement comprehensive interdisciplinary teaching by fusing contemporary information technology with traditional liberal arts instruction. This paper conducted a cutting-edge study on the teaching method of French interpretation against the backdrop of the new liberal arts in order to alter the teaching strategy and increase teaching effectiveness. In this paper, an intelligent interpretation teaching system was constructed using information technology. Through text classification algorithms, it incorporated and optimized teaching resources. According to the experimental findings, the teaching process was optimized, and the teaching efficiency increased by 7.94% when French interpretation was taught against a backdrop of new liberal arts. Purpose: This paper describes the impact of external crises, i.e. the pandemic, the war in Ukraine, inflation and the reform of science and higher education on the work of early career researchers. Methods: The respondent group comprised early career researchers in humanities, theology and art. A qualitative analysis of free statements provided in the first round of in-depth interviews was performed. The Polish project (2023-) is a continuation of two international Harbingers projects, which included longitudinal interviews with early career researchers and dealt with changes in technology (2016-2018) and the pandemic (2020-2022). Results: Quotations from the interviews conducted in spring 2023 were used to describe the impact of external crises on the work of early career researchers in the three fields of science. The interviewees usually mentioned being overworked, sometimes - undervalued and, less frequently - the feeling of professional burnout. Financial problems of the young generation of Polish scientists were also brought up. Societal Impact Statement: The coronavirus pandemic has reminded us that green spaces provide sanctuary and comfort, as well as opportunities for release and relief, during difficult times. However, to ensure continuing viability, botanical gardens can do more to address important societal concerns, especially around the environment. Sustaining relevance through action, especially local action, while also thinking beyond botanical science, and making creative use of electronic outreach will help botanic gardens to flourish. Summary: This paper is a personal reflection on high‐level issues relevant to future of botanic gardens and similar organisations, based on the personal experiences of the author at the Field Museum in Chicago, the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, in London, the Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Studies (now the Yale School of the Environment) in New Haven, Connecticut, and the Oak Spring Garden Foundation in northern Virginia. Botanic gardens have the inherent advantage that passages of nature, especially in cities, are vital for individual and social well‐being. But this natural advantage needs to be supplemented by actions that take into account a changing world and that respond in meaningful ways to the concerns of supporters and stakeholders. I emphasise five principles that are important now and for the future: (1) Sustaining relevance is key; (2) science is not enough; (3) actions speak louder than words; (4) local action is disproportionately important; and (5) electronic outreach is not optional. Leadership from outstanding individuals is also vital. People perform and live religion in multiple and specific contexts, with different sides to their experiences, especially in multi-faith societies. Given the reality of religious contestations in Nigeria, too often, contradictory or complicated religious narratives are given that are connected to the societal dysfunctional realities which in turn radicalise the thinking and approaches of many people towards different religious positions, which empowers many to toe the path of religious chauvinism, thereby resulting in avoidable 'fields of blood'. But on the other hand, positive religious contestations have also produced meaningful development in some sense. This work adopted the historical and comparative research methodologies in order to interrogate the lived experiences of people with respect to religious contestations in Nigeria, and their effects both on an individual and the Nigerian State at large. The study revealed that many religious contestations in Nigeria are often engineered by socio-political and economic realities of the country, while others (religious leaders in most cases) leverage on the quest for dominance which is often tied to resource control. This paper, therefore, proposed that, though contestation is important in the development of any society, such should be done with respect to human dignity, rule of law, and recognition of religious values that promote peaceful co-existence and sanctity of life. The conclusion of this work is that, religious contestation that produces unwholesome rivalry, mutual mistrust, suspicion and distrust, and doctrinal crises is injurious to humanity and anti-development which should not be encouraged. The aim of this paper is to present a systematic review of tourism certification, labelling and branding research. To review the scientific literature, we followed the PRISMA methodological approach. We started by outlining the spatial and temporal distribution of research linked to certification, labelling and branding, carried out in the social sciences and humanities. In the second step, we extracted the theoretical definitions and characteristics of these three processes in tourism from a selected body of literature. We continued by analysing hierarchical and non-hierarchical relations between certification and branding, and by drawing conclusions linked to duality, or even contradictions that are emerging in this field of tourism research. What is ‘communication’ in communication scholarly journals? This question arises from a practical issue: when one chooses to write about ‘communication’ and submit it to review, what guidelines are provided by the journals? What articles might be placed under this label? This paper examines the editorials, presentation and ‘focus and scope’ section of 53 Brazilian communication journals in order to outline their definition of ‘communication’. Main findings suggest that communication is presented (1) as an interface area, sometimes nearly overlapping the whole of the Humanities; (2) as a field defined by media studies, its production, messages and reception; (3) as a troublesome concept without defined boundaries. A documentary review was carried out on the production and publication of research papers related to the study of the variable Importance of education in humanities and history in Latin American basic education. The purpose of the bibliometric analysis proposed in this document, is to know the main characteristics of the volume of publications registered in Scopus database during the period 2016-2021 in Latin American countries, achieving the identification of publications44 in total. The information provided by said platform, was organized by means of graphs and figures categorizing the information by Year of Publication, Country of Origin, Area of Knowledge and Type of Publication. Once these characteristics were described, the position of different authors regarding the proposed topic was referenced by means of a qualitative analysis. Among the main findings of this research, it is found that Brazil, with 126 publications, is the Latin American country with the highest production. The area of knowledge that made the greatest contribution to the construction of bibliographic material referring to the study of the importance of education in humanities and history in basic education was social sciences with 49published documents, and the type of publication that was most used during the period indicated above was the journal article, which represents 61% of the total scientific production. In the years 1834 and1835, Kierkegaard, still a 21-year-old student at the University of Copenhagen, became interested in the mythical character known as the master-thief. He then decided to work on a drama about this character and his struggle against the established order. With this in mind, the paper has two main objectives. First, to offer a complete account of the so-called master-thief project. Kierkegaard's notes on the master-thief have remained in a relative obscurity. This paper aims at exposing this little-known work of the Danish thinker to the Spanish-speaking reader. Second, to analyze the philosophical question raised in the master thief project, that is, the issue about the relationship of the rebel and marginalized individual with the established order. The article presents abstracts on biotechnology and humanities topics which include the relevance of fusing biotechnology and science with humanities in teaching, genetic examination and its ethical approach, and the bioethical issues in research regarding cancer.

Introduction. The paper aims to investigate image data sharing within social science and humanities. While data sharing is encouraged as a part of the open science movement, little is known about the approaches and factors influencing the sharing of image data. This information is evident as the use of image data in these fields of research is increasing, and data sharing is context dependent. Method. The study analyses qualitative semi-structured interviews with 14 scholars who incorporate digital images as a core component of their research data. Analysis. Content analysis is conducted to gather information about scholars' image data sharing and motivating and impeding factors related to it. Results. The findings show that image data sharing is not an established research practice, and when it happens it is mostly done via informal means by sharing data through personal contacts. Supporting the scientific community, the open science agenda and fulfilling research funders' requirements motivate scholars to share their data. Impeding factors relate to the qualities of data, ownership of data, data stewardship, and research integrity. Conclusion. Advancing image data sharing requires the development of research infrastructures and providing support and guidelines. Better understanding of the scholars' image data practices is also needed. The widespread social and political changes at the end of the 20th century influenced and reshaped higher education and, consequently, research in and the position of the humanities at universities around the world. This paper examines the much-debated crisis in the humanities and poses questions on its course in the light of the global COVID-19 pandemic. It argues that the COVID-19 pandemic might be an opportunity for reflections that may lead to changes in higher education that aim to revive humanistic research, which provides people with tools such as critical thinking, which has proved to be crucial in times of crisis, like pandemics. We consider the example of the Faculty of Philology at the University of Belgrade, the most prominent place for language, culture and literature research in Serbia, as this is an institution that faces many challenges, primarily a decline in enrolment in certain programmes. This article examines recent developments in Amsterdam to establish a Center for Humanities and Technology (CHAT). The project is a collaboration between public research institutions and a private partner. To date, a White Paper has been produced that sets out a shared research agenda addressing both humanities and computing challenges. In this paper I describe an activity based on a 1903 Sherlock Holmes murder mystery, in which a substitution cipher is used to encrypt secret messages. The story provides a fun and interesting way to talk about frequency analysis, and can be used as a segue into mathematical constructs such as modular arithmetic and computation. The activity is accessible to ages twelve and above, and has been successfully used in mathematics outreach and popularization efforts as well as in general education and mathematics courses. With regard to the so-called "Anthropocene" era, in which human beings have become Earths' main telluric force, the humanities are clearly under siege. They must review in depth their conception of human being, usually defined as essentially different from Nature. This paper considers how an interdisciplinary approach to the "wicked problem" of plastics pollution offers unique and important collaborative possibilities. Specially, the paper considers the approach of the Synthetic Collective, a group comprising artists, humanities scholars, and scientists. Considering first how artists and scientists might respond differently to tracking, mapping, understanding, and representing plastics pollution, we then look for potential points of commonality across disciplinary difference. In respect to the urgent and multifaceted problem of marine plastics pollution in the Great Lakes region, we ask what are some of the successes and pitfalls of bringing together diverse approaches and interests? Between 2014 and 2017, during three "Doctoriales" sessions, 84 young PhD candidates in humanities and social sciences were given the opportunity to present their work. Based on this experience, and a short survey done in 2017 by the authors, this paper aims to analyze the state of "young" research on water in human and social sciences. Even if most of the papers presented during the "Doctoriales" relate to geography and economy, overall 12 disciplinary fields were represented. A great variety of approaches and methods were also noted with, however, disciplinary specificities concerning a normative or constructivist approach, references mainly to Anglo-Saxon or French literature, and so on. General trends have also been identified, such as a widespread multidisciplinary approaches and, for most young researchers, the wish to remain in academia after their PhD. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In academic contexts, digital games are often studied as texts or are used as pedagogical tools to teach basic concepts in early education situations. Less usefully, their systems and economies are often co-opted and decontextualized in short-sighted attempts to "gamify" various aspects of learning or training. However, given that games are highly controlled, conditional, choice-and-consequence-based, problem-solving environments in which players are expected to interact with simulated settings and elements after agreeing to take on particular roles and subject positions, there are promising potential uses of these experiences in academic contexts that have not been fully considered. Motivated by the imperative to explore alternative modes and methods of scholarly research and communication, and guided by the values of open social scholarship practices, this paper reconsiders games not as things to study, but as instruments to study with. Given that games can function as simulations, models, arguments and creative collaboratories, game-based inquiry can be used as a potential method of post-secondary and post-graduate humanities research and scholarly communication. While these ideas have been explored in a preliminary way in relation to a number of different academic disciplines (Donchin 1995; Boot 2015; Mitgutsch and Weise 2011; Westecott 2011) this paper is meant to catalyse a humanities-calibrated consideration of the pragmatics and potentials of game-based research, games as instances of critical making and scholarly communication, and more complex forms of game-based learning than those currently practiced. The paper discusses the concept of adequacy central for Pertażycki's methodology. According to Petrażycki any valuable scientific theory should be adequate, that is, neither limping (to broad with respect its actual scope) nor jumping (too narrow with respect to its actual scope). Consequently, adequacy of a theory is a stronger condition than its truth. Every adequacy theory is true, but not conversely. However, there is problem, because scientific laws are conditionals (implications). This suggests that adequacy is too strong conditions, because the consequence of an implication has a wider scope than its antecedent. Thus, laws should have the form of equivalence. The humanistic disciplines aim to offer explanations of a wide variety of phenomena. Philosophical theories of explanation have focused mostly on explanations in the natural sciences; a much discussed theory of explanation is the causal theory of explanation. Recently it has come to be recognized that the sciences sometimes offer respectable explanations that are non-causal. This paper broadens the discussion by discussing explanations that are offered in the fields of history, linguistics, literary theory, and archaeology that do not seem to fit the causal theory of explanation. We conducted an exploratory survey in acclaimed humanities textbooks to find explicitly so-called explanations and analyze their nature. The survey suggests that non-causal explanations are an integral part of the humanities and that they are of distinct kinds. This paper describes three kinds that are suggested by our survey: teleological, formal, and normative explanations. This paper, originally given in Groningen, the Netherlands, proposed a 'material hermeneutics', or, metaphorically, an interpretation which "lets things speak" via new scientific imaging technologies. Such a material hermeneutics would add to, perhaps often displace the usual linguistictextual hermeneutics so refined by Paul Ricoeur. In this paper, we reflect upon our role as researchers embedded in humanities in the KNOTS project. In the course of the project, we noticed various misapprehensions among both staff and students stemming, among others, from different cultural, political, and educational backgrounds. While a diversity of inputs and perspectives is considered an advantage for transdisciplinary projects, cooperation among actors with various backgrounds can also be challenging. Based on our observations and previous experience living and working in Vietnam, we created a session focusing on ethics for the last summer school in Ho Chi Minh City. We decided to bring participants' attention to research ethics and issues of cross-cultural communication, and suggested reflection and discussion as a coping strategy. In the course of a three years long mutual learning process, we realized that striving to create a common understanding of research ethics and cross-cultural awareness is an indispensable element of teaching and doing transdisciplinary research in a multicultural environment. The affective turn in the humanities and social sciences seeks to theorize the social through examining spheres of experience, particularly bodily experience and the emotions, not typically explored in dominant theoretical paradigms of the twentieth century. Affective and immaterial labor is work that is intended to produce or alter emotional experiences in people. Although it has a long history, affective labor has been of increasing importance to modern economies since the nineteenth century. This paper will explore the gendered dimensions of affective labor, and offer a feminist reading of the production of academic subjectivities through affective labor, by specifically examining the pink-collar immaterial labor of academic reference and liaison librarians. Due to the polysemy of Complexity, it is intended to expose different postures, definitions, descriptions and debates about It, in the light of what was described by Carlos Maldonado, Edgar Morin, Ilya Prigogine, Murray Gell-Mann, Leonardo Rodríguez and Julio Aguirre. For them it implies a dialogical and translucent principle that would integrate classical logic considering its de facto (contradictions problems) and de jure (formalism limits) limits, and that in addition would take in himself the principle of Unitas Multiplex that escapes to the abstract unity by the high (holism) and by the low (reductionism). After the presentation of the positions of the mentioned authors the paper goes on to describe encounters and disagreements about this concept finally proposing a definition and characterization of complexity. This paper will demonstrate that it is possible to identify the foundations of the philosophy of freedom that began with Kant in the work of Rousseau, specifically in his vision of an essential relationship between freedom and humanity. By means of a critical and hermeneutical method, the analysis focuses on elucidating the historical and philosophical meaning of the anthropological conception consolidated in his first two Discourses. The aim is to show that freedom acquires the unprecedented significance of becoming the principle of humanity and the ground that determines humankind's destiny. The results of this study suggest that this idea of humanity, defined by freedom, sets the basis for subsequent philosophical thinking and evidence the decisive importance of Rousseau for the modern consciousness of freedom. In this paper, I will discuss what specific traits distinguish sciences from other historical institutions. First I will review several philosophies conceiving sciences having in mind constitutive, but generic, features. This is the case when sciences are understood as explanation, as comprehension, as knowledge, as description, as representation, as construction, as cultural institution, as experimentation and elaboration of hypotheses, as theory, and as instrument of domination and intervention on reality. Citizen science projects need to attract citizens and motivate them to dedicate their energy and time to science. Recruiting enough participants and keeping them engaged throughout the project is often a big challenge for the scientists involved. In this paper, recruiting and engagement strategies are evaluated for a successful midsize online citizen science project in the field of humanities. Quantitative measures are applied to track the quantity and quality of citizens' contributions over time, allowing understanding of the dynamics of engagement in citizen science. The study shows that monitoring the level of activity and the quality of contributions provides useful insights about a project's dynamics. We found that a small core group of volunteers was responsible for most of the input to the project, that their transcriptions were very accurate from the start, and that prompt feedback on their performance was important to keep activity levels high. Over the past half century, how we conceive of design research has changed significantly, as indeed have the boundaries of influence of the design profession. This paper takes an entirely personal perspective of the author and will discuss the change in the nature of design research through the lens of a career in design education and, especially, in the author's endeavours to develop design research as a respected discipline working with and alongside, science, social sciences and the arts and humanities. Early and modern scholars have deliberated extensively on the principle of wasatiyyah with its various interpretations. Yet, the term has not been perceived through the Sharī'ah point of view, and there is no study which directly relates it with the objectives of the Sharī'ah. This paper, therefore, examines the necessity of wasatiyyah from the perspective of the Sharī'ah. It aims at highlighting the principle of wasatiyyah as one of the objectives of Sharī'ah. In doing so, the Qur'ānic and prophetic texts dealing with the principle of wasatiyyah along with the views of early and modern scholars are examined. In addition, this paper also examines some approaches of wasatiyyah by Muslim reformists. They demonstrated the different manifestations of wasatiyyah and its signifi cance in accordance with the needs and circumstances of the society. Based on the signifi cance of wasatiyyah, this paper concludes that it can be considered as one of the fundamental principles of the Sharī'ah. In other words, the principle of wasatiyyah should be acknowledged as a higher objective of the Sharī'ah which must be obtained at both the individual as well as the collective level.
