The large compositional space of high entropy alloys (HEA) often presents significant challenges in comprehensively deducing the critical influence of atomic composition on their mechanical responses. We propose an efficient nonparametric kernel-based probabilistic computational mapping to obtain the optimal composition of HEAs under ballistic conditions by exploiting the emerging capabilities of machine learning (ML) coupled with molecular-level simulations. Compared to conventional ML models, the present Gaussian approach is a Bayesian paradigm that can have several advantages, including small training datasets concerning computationally intensive simulations and the ability to provide uncertainty measurements of molecular dynamics simulations therein. The data-driven analysis reveals that a lower concentration of Ni with a higher concentration of Al leads to higher dissipation of kinetic energy and lower residual velocity, but with higher penetration depth of the projectile. To deal with such conflicting computationally intensive functional objectives, the ML-based simulation framework is further extended in conjunction with multi-objective genetic algorithm for identifying the critical elemental compositions to enhance kinetic energy dissipation with minimal penetration depth and residual velocity of the projectile simultaneously. We present here the fabrication at the wafer level and the electrical performance of two types of graphene diodes: ballistic trapezoidal-shaped graphene diodes and lateral tunneling graphene diodes. In the case of the ballistic trapezoidal-shaped graphene diode, we observe a large DC current of 200 µA at a DC bias voltage of ±2 V and a large voltage responsivity of 2000 v/w, while in the case of the lateral tunneling graphene diodes, we obtain a DC current of 1.5 mA at a DC bias voltage of ±2 V, with a voltage responsivity of 3000 v/w. The analysis was performed on six commonly used 5.56 x 45 mm projectile types (M193, M855, M855A1, L31A1, M995, and AP45). The projectile's impact velocity (chosen as 900 m/s) was the same in the examination process. This made it possible to assess how the projectile's design has affected its performance against a hard steel target. These evaluations included numerical simulations (Ansys Autodyn) of projectile impacts. Using the available experimental data, the materials in the computational model were first validated. In a tidal disruption event (TDE), a star is destroyed by the gravitational field of a supermassive black hole (SMBH) to produce a stream of debris, some of which accretes onto the SMBH and creates a luminous flare. The distribution of mass along the stream has a direct impact on the accretion rate, and thus modelling the time-dependent evolution of this distribution provides insight into the relevant physical processes that drive the observable properties of TDEs. Analytic models that only account for the ballistic evolution of the debris do not capture salient and time-dependent features of the mass distribution, suggesting that fluid dynamical effects significantly modify the debris dynamics. Previous investigations have claimed that shocks are primarily responsible for these modifications, but here we show – with high-resolution hydrodynamical simulations – that self-gravity is the dominant physical mechanism responsible for the anomalous (i.e. not predicted by ballistic models) debris stream features and its time dependence. These high-resolution simulations also show that there is a specific length-scale on which self-gravity modifies the debris mass distribution, and as such there is enhanced power in specific Fourier modes. Our results have implications for the stability of the debris stream under the influence of self-gravity, particularly at late times and the corresponding observational signatures of TDEs. A detailed mapping of volcanic ballistic projectiles emplaced in a defined area, represents the starting point to derive preparatory data in hazard and risk studies of ballistics phenomena. Considering as case study the 3rd July 2019 paroxysmal eruption occurred at Stromboli volcano, we map and analyse at very high spatial resolution (8 cm) the distribution of the ballistic spatter clasts emplaced on the E flank of the volcano. The resulting map identifies and reproduces as geospatial polygon elements 152,228 spatter clasts with areal dimensions from 0.03 to 4.23 m2. Dispersed on 0.407 km2, the spatters cover an area of 29,000 m2 corresponding to an erupted products volume from 2.3 to 7.0 × 103 m3, calculated here for the first time. Spatial analyses indicate that the area mostly affected by the clasts emplacement is between N67.5 and N135 directions, identifying a preferential deposition between N112.50 and N123.75 directions. The clasts size distribution rapidly decreases with the size increase, highlighting a nearly constant ratio small/large clasts regardless the distance from the vent. Finally, additional investigations reveal that clasts dispersion parameters decrease progressively with the distance from the vent only along one direction (N67.5), highlighting how the morphology influences the deposition and remobilisation of mapped ballistics. A mathematical simulation of the internal ballistics of a shot from a gun, depending on the design of the charge of the gun, has been performed. A general system of equations defining the unsteady movement of a two-phase gas–powder mixture in the channel of the barrel of a gun in the one-dimensional approximation is presented. Results of simulation of a shot from a gun charged with tubular powder or chopped powder are presented. The influence of the gradual ignition of a powder in a gun and of its nonstationary and erosion burning in it on the parameters of the ballistic process in the gun and the influence of the mass and disposition of an igniter in the gun on the dynamics of a shot from it were investigated. The change of ambient temperature will cause the change of gunpowder burning rate, which will directly affect the ballistic performance of the projectile and cause the change of the overload of the projectile fuze system. In this study, the numerical simulation program of the interior trajectory of a large-caliber gun was established by MATLAB, and the variation rules of the corresponding trajectory parameters at different temperatures were obtained. ANSYS finite element software is used to analyze the force of the projectile fuze system under different ambient temperatures. The results show that under the same loading conditions, with the increase of ambient temperature, the maximum pressure in the gun bore and the muzzle velocity of the projectile increase significantly, and the stress and strain of the projectile fuze system in the bore increase gradually. The numerical simulation results are in good agreement with the theory, which reveals the influence of ambient temperature on the overload in the bore of the projectile fuze system to a certain extent, and provides theoretical support for the study of internal ballistics, charge design and gun use. To clarify the combustion process of a modular charge system with a primer gap, the rules governing the cartridge movement and pressure change in the chamber are analyzed. Based on the characteristics of the modular charge system, an axisymmetric two-phase flow model of the interior ballistics is established, with the monotonic upward-centered scheme for conservation laws adopted to calculate the combustion process. Compared with the experimental results, the difference in the peak pressure is less than 5%, which indicates that the mathematical model and scheme are reliable and accurate. The results show that, during the initial stage of ignition, the combustible container remains unbroken, and the gas and solid particles are prevented from spreading to the chamber by the end cap of the cartridge. Thus, only the gas inside the igniter tube influences the flow field in the chamber. After the combustible container has broken, the gas and solid particles move rapidly toward the cavity from the combustible container. The axial movement of solid particles is more intense than that of the gas particles, but the radial movement of solid particles is relatively weak. Furthermore, the existence of the primer gap leads to a delay in the ignition time of the solid particles, which delays the rupture time of the igniter tube and the module cartridge. Multi-layer fabrics are commonly used in ballistics shields with a lower bulletproof class to protect against pistol and revolver bullets. In order to additionally limit the dynamic deflection of the samples, layers reinforced with additional materials, including non-Newtonian fluids compacted by shear, are additionally used. Performing a wide range of tests in each case can be very problematic; therefore, there are many calculation methods that allow, with better or worse results, mapping of the behavior of the material in the case of impact loads. The search for simplified methods is very important in order to simplify the complexity of numerical fabric models while maintaining the accuracy of the results obtained. In this article, multi-layer composites were tested. Two samples were included in the elements subjected to shelling. In the first sample, the outer layers consisted of aramid fabrics in a laminate with a thermoplastic polymer matrix. The middle layer contained a non-Newtonian shear-thickening fluid enclosed in hexagonal (honeycomb) cells. The fluid was produced using polypropylene glycol and colloidal silica powder with a diameter of 14 µm in the proportions of 60/40. The backing plate was made using a 12-layer composite made of Twaron® para-aramid fabrics with a DCPD matrix—not yet used in a wide range of ballistics. Then, numerical simulations were carried out in the Abaqus/Explicit dynamic analysis. The Johnson–Cook constitutive strength model was used to describe the behavior of elastic–plastic materials constituting the elements of the projectiles. For the non-Newtonian fluid, a Up-Us EOS was used. The inner layers of the fabric were treated as an orthotropic material. Complete homogenization of the sample layers was carried out, thanks to which each layer was treated as a homogeneous continuum. As a parameter of fracture mechanics for shield components, the strain criterion was used with the smooth particles hydrodynamics method (SPH). Then, the results of simulations were compared with the results of the ballistic test for both samples placed next to each other, which resulted in the formation of a multi-layer composite in one ballistic test subjected to impact loads during firing with a 9 × 19 mm Parabellum FMJ projectile with an initial velocity of 370 ± 10 m/s. The results of numerical tests are very similar to the ballistic tests, which indicates the correct mapping of the process and the correct conduct of layer homogenization. The applied proportions of the components in the non-Newtonian fluid allowed a reduction in the deflection compared to previous studies. Additionally, the proposal to use a DCPD matrix allowed to obtain a much lower deflection value compared to other materials, which is a novelty in the field of production of ballistic shields. Two-phase flow numerical methods are applied in internal ballistics widely, which has made higher fidelity analysis with minimal cost become an urgent demand. Current methods are based on independent dimension, and there is no definite conversion criterion and data transmission method, which have limited the application of efficient hybrid models applied to calculation. In this paper, we propose a hybrid method by linking a two dimensional (2D) model to a one dimensional (1D) model for two-phase flow. First, 1D and 2D two-phase flow models are established according to the flow field states in different phases. Next, the criterion of conversion between the two models is established, which is a quantitative index to judge the degree of radial effect and axial effect. Finally, dimension transformation in the radial direction and grid mergence in the axial direction are conducted to complete the whole computing model. The simulation results show that the hybrid method is more efficient in the interior ballistic process and maintains the level of trust in classical codes. Compared with the 2D method, the hybrid method significantly improves the computational efficiency by 86.5%. By analyzing the state in the chamber, the accuracy of the conversion criterion is confirmed. This criterion can be used as the transformation criterion of the hybrid model to form the standard multi-dimensional calculation transformation criterion of interior ballistics and may be promising for the rapid simulation of two-phase flow in interior ballistics. It is shown that the ratio of the proton convective gyroradius r Ep, to the width of the shock ramp D , controls the thermalization process of ions in quasi-perpendicular shocks. When r Ep/ D > 1, the solar wind beam energy is rapidly converted to gyration (thermal) energy by a universal, transit time thermalization (TTT) mechanism that does not require any collisions, waves, or instabilities. The TTT of ions on magnetic field gradients is followed by stochastic wave energization (SWE) on electric field gradients. Ions heated by TTT and SWE processes are subject to additional ballistic surfing acceleration caused by the convection field in the shock front. These three fundamental ion energization mechanisms are studied with test-particle simulations in a realistic shock model, and are shown to be consistent with magnetospheric multiscale measurements in the Earth's bow shock. It is also shown that shock reflected ions are produced by the SWE process and not by the cross-shock potential. A promising direction in barrel ballistics aimed at increasing the muzzle velocity of a projectile is the use of new propellants as an attached charge. This paper presents an experimental and theoretical method for determining the law of propellant combustion in a manometric experiment (in a closed volume). Within the framework of this method, a small number of experiments could be sufficient to determine a change in the law of combustion during the propellant burnout and depending on pressure. This method is demonstrated on the example of processing three experiments with model high-density propellant. The laws of combustion of high-density propellants, obtained in this study, can later be used to calculate the gas-dynamic parameters of a shot from a barrel system or a nozzle bomb (in a semi-closed volume) using these propellants. The identification of firearms is of paramount importance for investigating crimes involving firearms, as it establishes the link between a particular firearm and firearm-related elements found at a crime scene, such as projectiles and cartridge cases. This identification relies on the visual comparison of such elements against reference samples from suspect firearms or those existing in databases. Whenever this approach is not possible, the chemical analysis of the gunpowder and gunshot residue can provide additional information that may assist in establishing a link between samples retrieved at a crime scene and those from a suspect or in the identification of the corresponding model and manufacturer of the ammunition used. The most commonly used method for the chemical analysis of gunshot residue is scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray, which focuses on the inorganic elements present in ammunition formulation, particularly heavy metals. However, a change in the legal paradigm is pushing changes in these formulations to remove heavy metals due to their potential for environmental contamination and the health hazards they represent. For this reason, the importance of the analysis of organic compounds is leading to the adoption of a different set of analytical methodologies, mostly based on spectroscopy and chromatography. This manuscript reviews the constitution of primer and gunpowder formulations and the analytical methods currently used for detecting, characterising, and identifying their compounds. In addition, this contribution also explores how the information provided by these methodologies can be used in ammunition identification and how it is driving the development of novel applications within forensic ballistics. A letter published in the Journal of Translational Medicine discusses the immune response triggered by radiation therapy (RT). The letter explains that RT can have both immunomodulatory and immunosuppressive effects on the immune system. The authors conducted a study comparing two types of RT, shield RT (SRT) and conformal RT (CRT), and found that CRT was more effective at delaying tumor growth and improving survival due to a stronger CD8+ TIL-mediated immune response. The study also revealed that monocytes played a critical role in activating CD8+ TILs after CRT. The authors emphasize the importance of accurately describing the irradiation technique used in preclinical studies and highlight the need for further research on the immune mechanisms underlying RT efficacy. Shear thickening fluid (STF) is a dense colloidal suspension of nanoparticles in a carrier fluid in which the viscosity increases dramatically with a rise in shear rate. Due to the excellent energy absorption and energy dissipation of STF, there is a desire to employ STFs in a variety of impact applications. In this study, a comprehensive review on STFs' applications is presented. First, several common shear thickening mechanisms are discussed in this paper. The applications of different STF impregnated fabric composites and the STF's contributions on improving the impact, ballistic and stab resistance performance have also been presented. Moreover, recent developments of STF's applications, including dampers and shock absorbers, are included in this review. In addition, some novel applications (acoustic structure, STF-TENG and electrospun nonwoven mats) based on STF are summarized, to suggest the challenges of future research and propose some more deterministic research directions, e.g., potential trends for applications of STF. This paper describes the method and results of an experimental study of unsteady burning rate of high-energy materials containing metal powder additives under depressurization at a rate of 140–160 MPa/s. The method based on stating and solving the inverse problem of internal ballistics is used to determine the unsteady burning rate. The studies are carried out for high-energy materials, including energy additives in the form of metal powders (ASD-4, ASD-6, and Alex aluminum powders), aluminum diboride, and dodecaboride. It is shown by analyzing the this study that the unsteady burning rate of high-energy materials under sharp depressurization is oscillatory and depends on the energy additive type. Different charge structures have different interior ballistic performance. Existing research is based on experimental measurements or the lumped parameter method to obtain limited ballistic characteristics, which indirectly impacts the analysis of the parameters' distribution, requiring a complex modeling solution process. Besides this, the ignition performance of different charge structures needs to be further explored. The disadvantages of previous studies have limited the feasibility of further optimization of the composite charge structure. In this paper, we apply a two-dimensional two-phase flow method based on the Eulerian–Lagrangian model to study the performance of different composite charge structures. First, we establish the mathematical model of different particle types based on interior ballistics, which is directly related to the research foundation of subsequent ballistic performance. Next, we investigate the multi-scale reaction flow of complex charge structures by the two-phase flow method and obtain the distribution of parameters in the chamber. Finally, we conduct a study with different particle charge parameters to explore the sensitivity of ballistic characteristics to structural parameters. The results show that the tubular propellant has good ignition performance in different charge structures, and the ignition consistency can be improved by charging tubular propellant in the center of the chamber. However, more tubular propellants are ineffective at significantly improving ignition performance, and result in a decrease in combustion chamber pressure. Rare earth-doped zinc oxide (ZnO:RE) systems are attractive for future optoelectronic devices such as phosphors, displays, and LEDs with emission in the visible spectral range, working even in a radiation-intense environment. The technology of these systems is currently under development, opening up new fields of application due to the low-cost production. Ion implantation is a very promising technique to incorporate rare-earth dopants into ZnO. However, the ballistic nature of this process makes the use of annealing essential. The selection of implantation parameters, as well as post-implantation annealing, turns out to be non-trivial because they determine the luminous efficiency of the ZnO:RE system. This paper presents a comprehensive study of the optimal implantation and annealing conditions, ensuring the most efficient luminescence of RE3+ ions in the ZnO matrix. Deep and shallow implantations, implantations performed at high and room temperature with various fluencies, as well as a range of post-RT implantation annealing processes are tested: rapid thermal annealing (minute duration) under different temperatures, times, and atmospheres (O2, N2, and Ar), flash lamp annealing (millisecond duration) and pulse plasma annealing (microsecond duration). It is shown that the highest luminescence efficiency of RE3+ is obtained for the shallow implantation at RT with the optimal fluence of 1.0 × 1015 RE ions/cm2 followed by a 10 min annealing in oxygen at 800 °C, and the light emission from such a ZnO:RE system is so bright that can be observed with the naked eye. In this research, the numerical analysis is conducted to study the aerodynamic characteristics of the rocket target RT-400M with two motors arranged in parallel configuration with different nose cone shapes and performed ballistics analysis on drag values obtained from the finalised nose shape. Two RM 12K motors are used to increase range. This method reduces the R&D cost required to develop the new rocket motor with extended thrust. Reynolds averaged Navier-Strokes equation with k-ω SST model is adapted for the analysis. A parabolic nose shape produces the least values of drag, drag coefficient, and required velocities. A rocket target with a parabolic nose produces a maximum cd value of 0.29 and is used for the external ballistic calculation. Thrust values of the two motors are obtained from the experimental study. In criminal investigations, the Directorate for Investigation and Detective Management -- Police investigators are required by Philippine National Police orders to conduct forensic science-based crime scene investigations. In order to ensure that every government employee adheres to the accepted belief that public office is a public trust, it is challenging to assess the work of police detectives performing crime scene investigations using forensic technology. This essential value of forensic science in police investigations is undeniable. This study discusses the scope of police forensic methods in ballistics, photography, and dactyloscopy, specifically in the Province of Antique. These issues regarding the scope of practices in conducting investigations and forensic examinations are expressed via a survey questionnaire and a series of statistical tests. In addition, the report outlines the difficulties experienced by these Philippine National Police investigators. The results of the study found that police investigators had a high level of forensic experience with ballistics and photography. Further, results revealed low level of forensic experience with dactyloscopy.. Therefore, Police investigators, among many solutions, may consider the following to be of great help: 1-attending relevant seminars and trainings involving dactyloscopy, and 2- specifying budget allocation for lacking equipment. Forensic science plays a critical role in the United States criminal legal system. For decades, many featurebased fields of forensic science, such as firearm and toolmark identification, developed outside the scientific community’s purview. The results of these studies are widely relied on by judges nationwide. However, this reliance is misplaced. Black-box studies to date suffer from inappropriate sampling methods and high rates of missingness. Current black-box studies ignore both problems in arriving at the error rate estimates presented to courts. We explore the impact of each type of limitation using available data from blackbox studies and court materials. We show that black-box studies rely on unrepresentative samples of examiners. Using a case study of a popular ballistics study, we find evidence that these nonrepresentative samples may commit fewer errors than the wider population from which they came. We also find evidence that the missingness in black-box studies is non-ignorable. Using data from a recent latent print study, we show that ignoring this missingness likely results in systematic underestimates of error rates. Several aspects make nitrocellulose based powders adequate as a solid propellant for rockets and missiles and the prefe rable propellant to be used in firearms and artillery: it produces less smoke and less fouling than other propellants; its burning rate shows a well-defined relation to pressure and the composition of the gaseous mixture resulting from its decomposition by burning can be predicted with relatively high levels of accuracy. This last feature, if coupled with adequate thermodynamic models, leads to a reliable framework for the simulation of internal ballistics and, ultimately, to an efficient design. Some simpler models use an ideal gas approach, which is obviously not adequate, and some others perform corrections based on the Virial E quation of S tate for sake of algebraic simplicity. This work employs the Peng-Robinson equation of state to model the pressurevolume-temperature (PVT) behavior of the gases produced during the burning reaction, once it is known to be accurate in the high pressures obtained inside combustion chambers. The results were compared to experimental data obtained in a closed vessel device and showed that the Peng-Robinson equation of state could predict the chamber pressure with higher accuracy. The sodium rhodizonate test is a simple colorimetric technique used to identify traces of lead and barium. A positive test provides rapid and photographically documentable results for shots fired at distances not exceeding 50 cm. Usually, this method is not used for identification of the firing hand, which is detected by electron microscopy with energy dispersive analysis (SEM-EDX), requiring the removal of any particles on the surface to be analyzed by STUB. The use of Sodium Rhodizonate, which is undoubtedly less selective, has the disadvantage of target element solubilization (lead and barium) and thus the loss of the preliminary morphological investigation of the particles. The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate that the two indicated methods can be considered complementary in the following order: 1. buffer sampling for electron microscopy investigation (STUB); 2. and subsequent performance of the Sodium Rhodizonate Test. In some special cases, when it is necessary to obtain the result more quickly, with regards to respecting the chronology of the aforementioned tests, it may be useful to carry out the Sodium Rhodizonate Test first, especially when particular and perhaps antiquated weapons were used for suicidal purposes causing considerable gas dispersion and shot residues from the mechanisms. This research illustrates how significant results were obtained substantiating the suicide hypothesis, following the use of an old revolver (year of manufacture around 1915-1920). Modern weapons cause severe damage, accompanied by high rates of complications and mortality. The investigation of such kinds of weapons is in high demand considering the ongoing active phase war against Ukraine since February 2022. In order to understand the pathological processes that occur in and outside the gunshot wound, we conducted an experimental study using mathematical simulation. The results presented in the article will help to choose the appropriate surgical management and improve the results of treatment. The aim of this study was to investigate and evaluate the damaging effect of a 5.45 mm 7N6M bullet and a 5.45 mm V-max expansive bullet using numerical modeling of wound canals in ballistic plasticine. The Ansys Explicit Dynamics engineering complex was used to simulate the dynamics of the bullet’s motion. The basic equations, solved by the explicit dynamic analysis, express the conservation of mass, momentum, and energy in Lagrange coordinates. Together with the material model and the set of initial and boundary conditions, they determine the complete solution to the problem. Taking into account that the initial velocity of the bullet is 1185 m/s at a mass of 3.9 g, we obtain energy 2740 J. All this energy acts at the area of the wound canal with a depth of 150 mm. Injury with a conventional 7N6M bullet is characterized by the fact that it passes through the block and loses only part of the kinetic energy. The simulation results showed that the velocity of the bullet at the outlet is 220 m/s. Taking into account the initial velocity of the bullet 918 m/s with a mass of 3.4 g, we obtain the kinetic energy acting on the walls of the wound canal with a depth of 200 mm of about 830 J. Mathematic analyses showed that the expansive bullet has a soft core that deforms and transfers all the kinetic energy to the tissues immediately after penetration into the tissues. The loss of kinetic energy of the bullet (ΔE, J) is defined as the difference between the kinetic energy at the time of injury (Ec, J) and the residual energy of the bullet when leaving the material (Er, J). Numerical modeling of wound ballistics in biological tissue simulators allows us to determine with high accuracy the features of wound canal formation and tissue response to damage of bullets having different kinetic energy, which contributes to the choice of adequate surgical management during surgery for gunshot wounds. A recent study published in the journal Nature has provided new insights into the charge-transfer processes that occur in photocatalytic reactions. The researchers used unique methods involving time-resolved and spatiotemporally resolved measurements to monitor these processes in Cu2O semiconductors. We describe and interpret deposits associated with the final Ubehebe Crater-forming, phreatomagmatic explosive phase of the multivent, monogenetic Ubehebe volcanic center. Ubehebe volcano is located in Death Valley, California, USA. Pyroclastic deposits occur in four main facies: (1) lapilli- and block-dominated beds, (2) thinly bedded lapilli tuff, (3) laminated and cross-laminated ash, and (4) massive lapilli ash/tuff. Lapilli- and block-dominated beds are found mostly within several hundred meters of the crater and transition outward into discontinuous lenses of lapilli and blocks; they are interpreted to have been deposited by ballistic processes associated with crater-forming explosions. Thinly bedded lapilli tuff is found mainly within several hundred meters, and laminated and cross-laminated ash extends at least 9 km from the crater center. Dune forms are common within ~2 km of the crater center, while finer-grained, distal deposits tend to exhibit planar lamination. These two facies (thinly bedded lapilli tuff and laminated and cross-laminated ash) are interpreted to record multiple pyroclastic surges (dilute pyroclastic currents). Repeated couplets of coarse layers overlain by finer-grained, laminated horizons suggest that many or most of the surges were transient, likely recording individual explosions, and they traveled over complex topography in some areas. These two factors complicate the application of classical sediment-transport theory to quantify surge properties. However, duneform data provide possible constraints on the relationships between suspended load sedimentation and bed-load transport that are consistent using two independent approaches. Massive lapilli ash/tuff beds occur in drainages below steep slopes and can extend up to ~1 km onto adjacent valley floors beneath large catchments. Although they are massive in texture, their grainsize characteristics are shared with laminated and cross-laminated ash facies, with which they are locally interbedded. These are interpreted to record concentrated granular flows sourced by remobilized pyroclastic surge deposits, either during surge transport or shortly after, while the surge deposits retained their elevated initial pore-gas pressures. Although similar surge-derived concentrated flows have been described elsewhere (e.g., Mount St. Helens, Washington, USA, and Soufriére Hills, Montserrat, West Indies), to our knowledge Ubehebe is the first case where such processes have been identified at a maar volcano. These concentrated flows followed paths that were independent of the pyroclastic surges and represent a potential hazard at similar maar volcanoes in areas with complex terrain. Ballistic devices that generate radial pressure waves are used for the treatment of different therapeutic indications. In order to assess the effectiveness of these devices and to interpret and transfer the results of clinical trials, it is important to know their acoustic output. In this paper, two ballistic devices and their reproducibility at different clinically relevant settings were investigated in the same in-vitro test setup. Pressure curves were measured in water at different intensity levels and pulse repetition rates. The sound field parameters (peak pressures, positive pulse intensity integral) were calculated from the pressure curves. Additionally, the surface velocity of the applicator was determined in air using a vibrometer. Both devices show a good pulse-to-pulse reproducibility. While the peak maximum pressure and the positive pulse intensity integral decrease only slightly (pmax up to 12%, PII+ up to 18.8%) comparing 1 Hz and 25 Hz for one device, they drop sharply (pmax up to 68.4%, PII+ up to 90.2%) for the other device comparing 1 Hz to 21 Hz. The same effect was observed in the vibrometer measurements. The results show that with increasing pulse repetition rate the stability of the parameters varies between different devices. Development of lightweight armors is vital in order to provide ballistic protection in a more effective way. The weight of steel armor can be decreased significantly by setting a front ceramic layer on it. In this paper, the influence of utilizing SiC and Al2O3 ceramic front layer on the ballistic behavior of 4140 bainitic steel was investigated experimentally. All steel plates were initially subjected to the austempering treatment by applying the austenitization at 860 °C for 1 h and then holding in a salt bath at 343 °C for 50 min to get fully bainitic microstructure. And then, the laminated composites, consisting of SiC or Al2O3 front layer (50 × 50 mm in size) and bainitic steel backing layer, were prepared by joining these layers with an acrylic adhesive. After the mechanical and microstructural characterization of the bainitic steel, the ballistic shots were made using 7.62 × 51 mm AP projectile with an average speed of 788.4 m/s on both monolithic steel and layered armor samples for comparison. The samples, which stopped the bullet at normal impact condition without complete perforation or disintegration of the bainitic steel layer, were termed as successful. The bainitic steel achieved the ballistic protection at a thickness ≥ 14 mm but the use of SiC layer provided the weight saving of at least 42.9% and the Al2O3 front layer enabled the weight reduction of 28.6% in the armor with respect to the monolithic 4140 bainitic steel. The primary aim of fingermark research is to advance the quantity and quality of fingermarks detected using novel techniques or improvements on existing methods. Subsequently, there is a need to evaluate these methods to determine the quality of the developed mark, which is mostly done by the use of a numerical scale with descriptors to assist in the evaluation. However, this evaluation is often complicated due to a wide range of variables that impact the way quality assessment is performed. This is particularly true when considering it is currently unknown what assessment parameters are required to encompass the overall definition of quality. Likewise, the definition of fingermark quality is not universally agreed upon, which leads to significant subjective interpretation when a researcher chooses a scale. The purpose of this study was to investigate the factors contributing to fingermark quality in order to generate a deeper understanding of current approaches and definitions. A survey was created through a dataset that consisted of over 500 fingermarks detected in controlled laboratory conditions with a range of techniques. The images selected for the survey were based upon representing a full range of quality, each with a varying range of attributes. The survey looked at different parameters and descriptions used in current assessment protocols, asked participants to grade marks based on chosen parameters, and investigated current chosen methods by researchers in fingermark definition. The survey relied upon the participation of both examiners and researchers in fingermark detection. The results indicate that quality assessment methods implemented by researchers are not utilising all parameters that fingermark researchers and examiners deem important. This is especially true for contrast and background development, considered as two of the top parameters by examiners and researchers, which are not regularly used in most quality scale assessment methods. The wounding potential of a projectile depends on its kinetic energy. The aim of the study was to investigate the deceleration of non-deforming full metal jacket handgun bullets (FMJ) in gelatine blocks of increasing length. The temporary cavity (TC) was visualized using a SA-X2 Photron camera. 126 test shots in 9 mm nominal calibre were fired under strict temperature control conditions (4°C) at small gelatine blocks ranging from 2 to 12 cm in length. The deposited energy was calculated based on the loss of bullet velocity through high-speed video analysis. The length of the TC was measured, when the TC reached its maximum height. The volume of the TC was approximated by a cylinder. Regression analysis showed a linear correlation between the length of the bullet path and the energy transfer. The constant deceleration of the FMJ bullets in gelatine up to 12 cm bullet path was confirmed across various brands and velocity ranges (270–450 m/s). Higher impact velocities correlated with increased loss of energy in the target medium. The shape of the bullet tip influenced the characteristic of deceleration. The volume of the tubular temporary cavity, derived from high-speed video records, was found to be proportional to the energy transferred. This research continues the research of Deng et al. (2022) [1], using Discrete Element Method (DEM) coupled with Finite Element Analysis to solve shotgun exterior ballistics. The simulation examples in this research are using an Italian-made 24 gm #9½ birdshot with 433 pellets fired from 30" long, 12-gauge cylinder and full choke barrels. The simulations of shotgun exterior ballistics of this research included pellet swarm velocity and the pellet dispersion at different distances until 50 yards away from the muzzle. The ballistics simulation of the pellet swarm is completed from interior to exterior consecutively after the shotshell is fired inside the chamber so all ballistics performances can be calculated at one time. Three forces were applied to the pellets for exterior ballistics simulation: the contact force between pellets, the aerodynamic separation force between pellets, and the drag force. Because of the complexity of the aerodynamic forces exerted on pellets, this research used an equivalent aerodynamic force to simulate this complex phenomenon. Two birdshot models with different pellet formations were created; the first one was simulated to calibrate the separation scale factor defined in aerodynamic separation force, and the second one was used for validation and sensitivity of the model. The simulation results show that for #9½ birdshots fired by cylinder barrel, the average Effective Shot Dispersion (ESD) of pellet dispersion of both birdshots inside the 30" diameter of the target circle at 40 yards from the muzzle is 398.53, which is remarkably close to 396.98 of the experiment result. The simulation of the average pellets' target hit rate is 77.14% (inside the 30" diameter of the target circle), which is also remarkably close to the experiment hit rate of 77.57%. The same birdshot fired from a full choke barrel shows that ESD and hit rate rose to 406.34 and 83.14%, respectively. These results demonstrate the effectiveness of using the discrete element method in conjunction with the proposed equivalent aerodynamic force to predict the shotgun's interior and exterior ballistics. Cross-laminated timber (CLT), an engineered wood product, has grown in popularity in the United States over the last decade due to its ease of assembly, aesthetic appeal, and potential to serve as a sustainable and renewable alternative building material. The improved robustness of CLT over light-frame timber structures has increased its potential in force-protected infrastructure that must resist blast waves and ballistic projectile penetration, but softwood CLT is typically not sufficient to fulfill standard criteria for ballistic threats. To address these threats, enhanced CLT (ECLT) composite panels were manufactured with layers of various reinforcing materials (e.g., steel, FRP) placed between wood laminations. These panels were tested against various ballistic threats during two sets of laboratory tests in order to provide a basis for future research. The first set of testing subjected laboratory-produced Southern Yellow Pine (SYP) ECLT to 84 shots of 0.50-inch (1.27 cm) steel sphere projectiles to evaluate the performance of various reinforcing materials, layups, and fastening methods. A subsequent set of tests subjected commercially produced ECLT of steel-reinforced Spruce-Pine-Fir (South) (SPF-S) to 36 shots of NATO ammunition projectiles traveling at realistic, standard striking velocities. Except for a panel using four layers of a thin and finely woven steel hardware cloth, steel reinforcement was effective in stopping projectiles from all three types of NATO ammunition fired. Ultimately considering the results of these two sets of tests, an initial cost-benefit structure was developed and discussed to compare ECLT configurations holistically, a multi-material wood analytical model framework was established and compared to experimental results, and the first ballistic experimental database for ECLT was created. Background: Approximately, 80% of civilian cranial gunshot injuries in India are mainly due to unlicensed mostly country-made guns, called the "Desi-Kattas," manufactured by the traditional gunsmiths. These injuries constitute a unique subgroup, with respect to the make and design along with the unique wound ballistics compared to the factory-made firearms.Objective: This study is aimed at defining the prognostic factors in predicting the outcomes related to cranial gunshot injuries due to these desi-kattas.Methods: Ten patients with kata-related cranial gunshot injury underwent surgical intervention at our institution, between 2014 and 2018. Their clinical status, imaging features, and outcomes were retrospectively analyzed.Results: Ten patients with kata-related gunshot injuries to the head were identified. Homicidal injuries were documented in six cases. Five had a GCS of 13-15 at presentation. Exit wounds were noted in 50% of the suicidal cases. Multilobar involvement was seen in 70% of cases, with the bullet crossing the midline in only 40% cases. Decompressive craniectomy was required in five cases. Eight patients had a Glasgow Outcome Score of four or more at 6 months of follow-up. There was one death during the follow-up period, while the other patient remains to be in vegetative state.Conclusion: The Katta-related cranial injuries constitute low-muzzle velocity injuries with the majority of the patients sustaining nonfatal injuries, especially homicidal. The presence of positive CT findings and the crossing of the bullet across the midline on CT brain predicts dismal prognosis. As the epidemic of gunshot injuries and firearm fatalities continues to proliferate in the United States, knowledge regarding gunshot wound (GSW) injury and management is increasingly relevant to health-care providers. Unfortunately, existing guidelines are largely outdated, written in a time that high-velocity weapons and deforming bullets were chiefly restricted to military use. Advances in firearm technology and increased accessibility of military grade firearms to civilians has exacerbated the nature of domestic GSW injury and complicated clinical decision-making, as these weapons are associated with increased tissue damage and often result in retained bullets. Currently, there is a lack of literature addressing recent advances in the field of projectile-related trauma, specifically injuries with retained bullets. This paper presents the results of the estimation of the priming mixture force for primers used in 12.7 mm ammunition. The method of estimation is based on the results of pressure measurements in a closed chamber into which the products of the combustion of the priming mixture flowed. The capacity of the chamber was changed by inserting sleeves of various volumes. Another estimation of the force value was performed using the results of earlier investigations in which the chamber was filled with glass balls. The determined values of the force were compared with the values estimated based on the accessible literature data. The obtained estimations of the force value are of the same order of magnitude as the force value of black powder. This justifies the use of black powder characteristics for the assessment of the thermodynamic properties of priming mixture combustion products in interior ballistics calculations. The time of action of the investigated primer was determined using the optical recording of the outflow of the priming mixture combustion products into an open space. This paper presents the experimental estimation of the ignition pressure value produced by a primer in small arms ammunition. Investigations were performed using a chamber of the capacity equal to the capacity of the 12.7 mm ammunition case. The inner volume of the chamber was adjusted to the free volume in the cartridge by inserting a sleeve or glass balls of a diameter of 2 or 4 mm. The pressure values were measured inside the chamber after the action of the primer. The maximum pressure value was used as an estimation of the ignition pressure value. Depending on the nature of the filling, considerably different values were obtained; they were compared with the values of pressure measured inside the case at the live firing. A considerable difference between the ignition pressure values measured inside the case and those measured in the model setup was detected. In modern war, the special ammunition launched by mortars contains photoelectric components, which can't bear high overload, so low overload launching is required. This paper creatively conceives the integrated structure of projectile and inverted high-pressure chamber without changing the mortar tube's original structure design. The flow field in the bore is modeled and simulated by using classical interior ballistics and FLUENT, and the difference between the chamber pressure of the inverted high-pressure chamber structure and the traditional structure are analyzed. The simulation results show that the initial motion law of the projectile launched by the inverted high-pressure chamber structure is different from that launched by the original structure. The last five decades have seen strong developments in irrigation modeling. In solid-set sprinkler irrigation, models have generally been applied to a few sprinklers in a regular arrangement, making them representative of a sector or a field. In this research, the Ador-Solid-Set model for whole-field solid-set sprinkler irrigation is presented, validated and applied to simulate an irrigation event in two fields: CA (10.2 ha) and ZA (24.5 ha), equipped with 12 and 26 sectors, respectively. The model couples pipeline hydraulics (EPANET), sprinkler ballistics and irrigation scheduling at execution time. Field experiments were used to validate the ballistic model in a solid-set combining full- and partial-circle sprinklers. Observed and simulated irrigation depths and coefficients of uniformity showed determination coefficients of 0.73*** and 0.89***, respectively. Optimization was used to estimate pipeline roughness based on pairs of pressure measurements (at the inlet and specific sprinklers): 26 pairs in CA and 58 pairs in ZA. Roughness parameters were estimated for the main pipeline, each sector and the sprinkler risers: 14 parameters in CA and 28 in ZA. More than a million hydraulic simulations were required to estimate roughness in each field. Maps were produced for applied water in CA and ZA following a sequential irrigation of their sectors lasting for 24 hours. The model produced whole-field coefficients of uniformity of 80.2 in CA and 80.9 in ZA. Finally, Ador-Solid-Set quantified the volume of drift outside the field (2.4 and 1.5% of the applied water in CA and ZA, respectively). This additional drift can be added to the wind drift and evaporation losses obtained from empirical equations, in a process that requires further analysis. Ceramic Matrix Composites (CMCs) have many interesting properties, mainly light weight, cost efficiency, low density, high compressive strength, high hardness and durability. Hence, they emerged as a boon to the development of personnel armors in the past. The current work aims to review various new methodologies adapted for the reinforcement of Alumina (Al 2 O 3) CMCs in recent times, including some of the interesting results obtained with respect to mechanical properties, suitability of the synthesized composites for armor applications, and the upcoming reinforcement trends. Finally, studies related to reinforcement in Al 2 O 3 CMCs, specifically towards armor applications have been consolidated to arrive at some of the important inferences for concluding reasonably. This paper presents a numerical and an analytical approach for calculation of internal ballistics parameters through determination of thermal and gasdynamic characteristics. The calculated parameters are validated through experimental tests on a real weapon system. The internal ballistic calculations are provided for two types of propellants using an analytical and a numerical model. Calculations and tests are performed for an anti-material rifle 12.7 mm. Weapon and ammunition testing is carried out according to the permanent international commission standard. Theoretical and experimental results for the gunpowder gases pressure and the muzzle velocity are compared. The good agreements between the calculated and the measured pressures and velocities increase the reliability of the estimated gunpowder gas temperatures in the barrel. The film Fracture Phenomena in Glass is a noteworthy case of a film reuse: it was published in the Encyclopaedia Cinematographica (EC) in 1976, bearing the signature E 2355. In this instance, surprisingly, the Institut für den Wissenschaftlichen Film (Institute for Scientific Film [IWF]), which produced, edited, distributed, and archived the EC films, reused ballistic film recordings from World War II. Produced at the Ballistic Institute of the Berlin-Gatow Air War Academy in 1942–1943 under the direction of Hubert Schardin, they were first published in 1944 as C 433 by the National Socialist predecessor institution, the Reich Institute for Film and Images in Science and the Classroom (Reichsanstalt für Film und Bild in Wissenschaft und Unterricht [RWU]). This reuse suggests that at least some of the EC films bear witness to telling discrepancies in political, historical, and epistemological classification within a distinctive worldwide project of postwar visual film research. This essay considers the controversial role of the encyclopedist Gotthard Wolf and the institutional history of the RWU/IWF by looking at examples of the reuse—or nonreuse—of ballistic films and concepts. As a parameter important ballistic, the research about polygonal and grooved barrels' behavior has not been widely carried out. The pressures, velocities, stresses, deformations, and strains generated by the firing of 9 mm × 19 mm ammunition in weapons with polygonal barrels are analyzed numerically and experimentally, compared with those generated in pistols with grooved barrels. The Finite Element Method with equal boundary and loading conditions was used in both types of guns, specifying the actual materials of the projectile and the barrels. Subsequently, experimental tests were carried out on various weapons with 9 mm ammunitions of 115, 122, and 124 gr. The results show that the 9 mm bullet fired in a polygonal barrel undergoes a maximum deformation towards its exterior of 0.178 mm and interior of 0.158 mm, with stress up to 295.85 MPa. Compared with 0.025 mm maximum external deformation and 0.112 mm internal deformation of 9 mm projectiles fired in a grooved barrel, with stress up to 269.79 MPa. The deformation in the polygonal barrel is in a greater area, but the rifling impression left is less deep, making its identification more difficult. Although there are differences in the stresses and strains obtained, similar velocity and pressure parameters are achieved in the two types of barrels. The sabot discard asymmetry caused by spinning affects the exterior ballistic characteristics and shooting accuracy of a gun with the rifled barrel. To gain a deeper understanding of the complex sabot discard performance for the armor-piercing, fin-stabilized discarding sabot (APFSDS), a numerical investigation is performed to assess the effects of the spin rate on the sabot discard characteristics. We obtain the calculation boundary by the interior ballistics and the firing conditions and carry out a numerical simulation under different spin rates using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and a dynamic mesh technique. We analyze four aspects of sabot discard characteristics, namely, sabot separation, rod surface pressure, rod aerodynamic parameters, and discarding quantization parameters. Computational results show that the sabot separation nearly presents perfect symmetry at 0 rad/s, and when the initial rate of the sabot increases, there is more obvious separation asymmetry, and it contributes to the relative position variation among the sabots and the rod. The distinction of rod surface pressure indicates that the choked flow is the strongest flow source, and the spin rate has almost no effect on the pressure of the rod front part. When the monitoring point moves towards the fins, the pressure distribution and intensity change more dramatically. The initial spin rate and separation asymmetry produce a variation in the surface pressure, which further influences the rod aerodynamic characteristics. The discarding quantization parameters exhibit a certain variation rule with its spin rate. 2,000 rad/s has a significant influence on the rod aerodynamic coefficients during the weak coupling phase. When the spin rate is in the range of 0–900 rad/s, the discarding characteristics remain the same. However, when the spin rate exceeds 900 rad/s, the separation time and aerodynamic impulse have a quadratic polynomial relationship with the rate. The ongoing pursuit of space and hypersonic flight continues to expose critical gaps in the understanding of material behavior under hypervelocity impact (HVI) and hypersonic flow conditions. Such limitations pose serious risks for aerospace vehicles, spacecraft, hardened structures, defensive systems, etc. Consequently, the development of materials and systems that can endure HVIs and hypersonic flight is a major obstacle in the quest for sustainable space exploration, reusable air-breathing hypersonic vehicles, and enduring protective structures. HVIs (≥ 3.0 km/s) can induce severe material deformation, erosion, fracturing, fragmentation, melting, vaporization, and sublimation. At the same time, hypersonic (≥ Mach 5) vehicles may be subjected to intense thermal and mechanical loads. Addressing these grand challenges requires a multifaceted and interdisciplinary approach, combining well-designed experiments with physics-based analytical and numerical modeling. Studying material behavior under HVIs and hypersonic conditions has been facilitated by two-stage light gas gun (2SLGG) aeroballistic ranges for almost seven decades. This current study surveys over 90 2SLGG aeroballistic ranges operational since 1990 to assess global launch and experimental capabilities. The 2SLGG's origins and research applications are explored, highlighting its significance in various fields, including shock physics, planetary science/defense, military defense, nuclear physics, hypersonic vehicle survivability and performance, and spacecraft micro-meteoroid/orbital debris protection. A summary of relevant HVI phenomena is presented to underscore the importance of 2SLGGs and to elucidate similarities and differences among various 2SLGG aeroballistic ranges and their supporting methods/tools. The 2SLGG's working principles are explained, and configurations and operations are compared. Modifications resulting in "three-stage light gas guns" are briefly mentioned for completeness. The full range of current 2SLGG performance capabilities is assessed with impact kinetic energies ranging from ∼ 10 joules to nearly 100 megajoules, and the facility survey results are used to explain the variations in aeroballistic range tankage, experiment types, research applications, and diagnostic systems. The first goal of this work is to find a regression law for PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride) coupled to hydrogen peroxide on a 10-N-scale hybrid thruster, which appears to be suitable for small satellites when, for example, manoeuvres are required for orbital control purposes. Different techniques were initially analysed in order to reconstruct the ballistics inside the combustion chamber, starting from the experimental data. Subsequently, even if the different techniques lead to similar results, the one that takes into consideration the greatest number of the experimental measurements was chosen for the post-processing, and three different regression curves were obtained according to various criteria. The resulting regression laws coming from the selected method appear to be in agreement with the experimental results and constitute a powerful means for designing engines with this fuel. Finally, a performance analysis has been performed and in-space thrust and specific impulse have been estimated. Boron carbide, with a nominal stoichiometry of B 4 C, is a highly desired ceramic candidate for armor applications due to its high hardness derived from the complex crystal structure. However, stress-induced local amorphization can lead to failure and is a known challenge for this material which must be addressed for applications in ballistic environments. Understanding boron carbide's atomic structural behavior and bonding environment is critical in determining effective strategies to mitigate these issues. In this work, the thermo-structural behavior of B 4 C has been studied in detail using a conical nozzle levitator system coupled with in-situ synchrotron X-ray diffraction. Lattice expansion and the resulting thermal expansion coefficients (CTEs) were determined from 25-2100 °C. Rietveld refinements showed anisotropic atomic displacement for each of the 4 unique sites as a function of temperature. An exceptionally large z-axis displacement for the boron chain center is linked to bond weakness and may be linked to fa α 11 ster expansion of the α 33 relative to CTEs. Thermally induced lattice changes can inform the use of boron carbide at elevated temperatures as well as help develop strategies for mitigating structural failure for armor applications. This paper describes an experimental and a numerical study of a recently developed high-efficiency, low-resistance launching method for an underwater launcher. The so-called gas-curtain launch method overcomes the problems of poor safety and low muzzle velocity in traditional fully submerged launchers. By introducing part of the gas inside the chamber to the front of the projectile, the water inside the barrel will be driven out. A low-resistance gas passage is then provided for projectile motion in the bore, thus delivering better interior ballistics performance than that in fully submerged launchers. Experiments are carried out using a 12.7-mm underwater launcher. A pressure sensor is used to record the chamber pressure, and high-speed video recordings allow the projectile motion around the muzzle to be determined. The experimental results show that the muzzle velocity is 172.8 m/s and the maximum chamber pressure reaches 116.0 MPa in a fully submerged launch, compared with a maximum chamber pressure of only 41.8 MPa and a muzzle velocity of 177.5 m/s when the gas-curtain launch method is adopted. The significant drag reduction effect of the gas-curtain launch greatly improves the interior ballistics performance, reducing the maximum chamber pressure by about 64.1% while retaining a similar muzzle velocity. Following the experiments, a numerical model is established and simulations are performed under various ventilation mass rates. The main objective of this article is to obtain equations of motion of the spin-stabilized projectile in the presence of non-constant wind. Introducing models allowing utilization of inhomogeneous wind is dictated by new possibilities created by the use of e.g. lidars in the Fire Control Systems (FCS). Constant feed of wind data can replace meteorological messages, increasing the FCS effectiveness. This paper analyzes the influence of grain star port configuration on the performance of solid rocket motors. SRM grain performance parameters are plotted for different combinations of geometric parameters of the star port section. A numerical simulation is performed in MATLAB to solve the SRM internal ballistics model coupled with the port and burning areas geometric build-up.
