Purpose: The purpose of this study is to reveal the usability of waste paper sludge on the production of composite materials and the printability of their surfaces were investigated. Design/methodology/approach: First, composite plates were produced by using dried and milled waste sludge together with polyester resin and epoxy. Screen printing using water, solvent and UV-based inks were carried out. Findings: It was determined that UV and solvent-based inks in both resin groups were permanently attached to the surface of composite plates produced using paper mill waste sludge, while it was found that the adhesion was not achieved sufficiently in cardboard factory waste sludge. Surface decorated wood-based panels with melamine formaldehyde resin (MF) impregnated paper is highly favored by consumers due to its outstanding appearance and durable performance. However, the laminated composites would encounter hygroscopic expansion and damage that affect its service and aesthetics in long-term humid environments. This study aims to construct highly durable superhydrophobic surface to address this issue. Firstly, a controlled micro rough structure on stainless steel plates which were built with sandblasting was successfully duplicated onto the surface of MF impregnated paper laminated medium density fiberboard (MDF) using the embossing method. Following that, a spray treatment with hydrophobic nanoparticles was employed to the laminated composite surface, ultimately resulting in a superhydrophobic coating with a contact angle up to 163°. To confirm the durability of the fabricated superhydrophobic layer, linear abrasion test, water droplet impact test, sand impact test, and tape peeling test were carried out. The results demonstrated that even after severe processed conditions, the contact angle of the decorated surface remained above 150°. And the decorated laminate successfully passed both self-cleaning and dirt resistance challenge, clearly indicating the outstanding durability of superhydrophobic structure. Furthermore, water absorption thickness expansion measurement was done to verify the dimensional stability of the laminate in humid conditions. This research presented a straightforward and cost-effective approach to fabricate highly durable superhydrophobic MF impregnated paper decorated laminates, offering a dependable strategy for research and applications in related domains. This paper investigates the influence of non-homogeneous elastic foundations on the free vibration characteristics of functionally graded graphene platelets reinforced composite plates submerged in fluid medium. A novel aspect of this study lies in exploring various distributions of the foundation, positioned either centrally within the plates or along their edges. The stiffness of the foundation is computed using Selvadurai's method, which accounts for subgrade soil properties and foundation depth. Material properties of the plates are examined by employing the rule of mixtures alongside the Halpin–Tsai micromechanical model. Hydrostatic pressure and free surface waves are not considered, given the assumption of an ideal and incompressible fluid. The theoretical framework is grounded in a novel inverse trigonometric shear deformation plate theory, where the transverse shear stress distribution is established using a newly developed inverse trigonometric function. The equations of motion are efficiently resolved through Galerkin's method. The efficacy of this approach lies in its utilization of integration to address the distribution issue of the foundation, obviating the need for deploying intricate algorithms. The proposed theory demonstrates enhanced accuracy in predicting natural frequencies compared to other published shear deformation plate theories. Moreover, this paper delves into the effect of material properties and the fluid environment on the natural frequencies of the structures. Particularly significant is our thorough investigation of the impact of variations in the locations, material properties, and sizes of the foundation on the free vibration of these plates, all of which bear great importance in structural design. Delamination represents one of the most significant and dangerous damages in composite plates. Recently, many papers have presented the capability of structural health monitoring (SHM) techniques for the investigation of structural delamination with various shapes and thickness depths. However, few studies have been conducted regarding the utilization of convolutional neural network (CNN) methods for automating the non-destructive testing (NDT) techniques database to identify the delamination size and depth. In this paper, an automated system qualified for distinguishing between pristine and damaged structures and classifying three classes of delamination with various depths is presented. This system includes a proposed CNN model and the Lamb wave technique. In this work, a unidirectional composite plate with three samples of delamination inserted at different depths was prepared for numerical and experimental investigations. In the numerical part, the guided wave propagation and interaction with three samples of delamination were studied to observe how the delamination depth can affect the scattered and trapped waves over the delamination region. This numerical study was validated experimentally using an efficient ultrasonic guided waves technique. This technique involved piezoelectric wafer active sensors (PWASs) and a scanning laser Doppler vibrometer (SLDV). Both numerical and experimental studies demonstrate that the delamination depth has a direct effect on the trapped waves' energy and distribution. Three different datasets were collected from the numerical and experimental studies, involving the numerical wavefield image dataset, experimental wavefield image dataset, and experimental wavenumber spectrum image dataset. These three datasets were used independently with the proposed CNN model to develop a system that can automatically classify four classes (pristine class and three different delamination classes). The results of all three datasets show the capability of the proposed CNN model for predicting the delamination depth with high accuracy. The proposed CNN model results of the three different datasets were validated using the GoogLeNet CNN. The results of both methods show an excellent agreement. In this article, the numerical and experimental free vibration analyses of PLA-based composite plates with different filling geometries were carried out. Firstly, the natural frequencies and modal shapes were obtained from finite element (FE) methods to characterize the vibration behavior of the plates. The obtained results were compared with experimental testing of the three-dimensional (3D) produced plates. In the comparison, it was seen that the finite element analysis and the experimental results were quite close to each other. It was also observed that the highest frequencies are measured by a triangle, then the grid and honeycomb. Moreover, higher frequencies and lower weights are possible with the triangle pattern fill. On the other hand, it is noted that the types of filling structures do not affect the modal shapes of the 3D plates. This paper presents the delamination impact over the dynamic response of the variable angle tow (VAT) composite plates. The VAT plates with various fiber angles are constrained to different boundary conditions for parametric investigation, while delamination is made to present over two different locations with varying sizes. A comparative stochastic vibration study is performed to evaluate the contribution of composite properties to delaminated and intact plates. The randomness in the material properties is modeled with the efficient Latin hypercube sampling method. The polynomial neural network-based surrogate model, considered an efficient substitute for computationally expensive Monte Carlo simulation, is employed in the present work to examine the stochastic behavior of VAT plates. The contribution of the composite properties on the uncertain vibration characteristics is evaluated. It is observed from the investigations that the sensitivity of the composite properties varies significantly with the delamination. In this paper, a meshfree Jacobi point interpolation (MJPI) approach for the free vibration and stationary stochastic response analyses of heated composite laminated plate with varying thickness and curvilinear fiber is developed. The theoretical formulations for heated composite laminated plate with varying thickness and curvilinear fiber are established by using Hamilton's principle in framework of first order shear deformation theory. The effect of thermal stress generated by the temperature variation is considered based on the thermo-elastic theory. The displacement components of the plate are approximated by using the MJPI shape function. The boundary conditions considered in this study are achieved by using the artificial spring technique. The accuracy and reliability of the proposed MJPI shape function are confirmed by comparing with numerical results from the published literature and finite element software ABAQUS. Several comparisons show that the differences between the numerical results from current method, reference and ABAQUS software are less than 1%. Finally, the effects of different parameters such as temperature difference, fiber direction coefficient, thickness gradient and thickness power index on the free vibration and stationary stochastic response of the composite laminated plate are investigated. In this paper large deformation of the skew microplate made of laminated composite enhanced with graphene nanosheets is investigated using first shear deformation theory (FSDT) when the plate undergoes combination of mechanical and thermal loads. Halpin-Tsai model is utilised to model mechanical properties while for thermal properties Schapery model is considered. First, shear deformation of the plate was obtained while using Green-Lagrange tensor the non-linear strain of the microplate is extracted using the von-Karman assumptions. Then, by Modified Coupled Stress Theory (MCSD), the components of Cauchy and Couple stress tensors are specified. Finally, using Hamilton Principle the governing equation of the microplate and boundary conditions are computed. After deriving analytical governmental equation results are presented for the simple support boundary condition and the proposed model is validated by previously reported data and it proves to be promising. Primary results showed that with raising skew angle deflection and bending moment decreases which means microplate becomes more rigid in higher skew angles. Higher mechanical loads lead to higher deflections and bending moments. Four different configurations of the layers were analysed from which angle-ply configuration possessed highest deflection and bending while UD configuration revealed the lowest values of deflection and bending moment. Four different composite coupling beam-to-composite plate shear wall (CPSW/CF) connection details were developed and proposed. Six large-scale specimens representing the four connections were designed, fabricated, and tested. The connections were subassemblies of coupled composite plate shear walls/concrete filled (CC-PSW/CF) subjected to cyclic lateral loading. The coupling beams were designed to be flexure-critical with clear span-to-depth (Lb/d) ratios of 3.5 or 5.1. This paper presents the experimental program, capacities, and detailed behavioral observations of all six specimens. The effects of connection type and Lb/d ratio on the ultimate strength, stiffness, ductility, and failure modes are evaluated. Major limit states and events included yielding of the steel plates comprising the coupling beam, followed by local inelastic buckling, fracture initiation in the base metal (near the weld toes), and fracture propagation through the beam flange and web plates, leading to loss of flexural strength and failure. All the connections were able to develop and transfer the flexural capacity of the composite beam section. The composite coupling beams developed flexural capacities (10%–50%) greater than those calculated using the plastic stress distribution method. The underlying reasons for this overstrength are evaluated. The AISC flexural stiffness equation for filled composite sections could reasonably estimate the stiffness of the composite coupling beam sections. A fiber-based model of the cross-section was used to calculate the section moment–curvature response of the filled composite beam sections. The calculated flexural capacities were consistent with those calculated by the plastic stress distribution method but lower than the experimentally observed values. The flexural stiffness values were slightly higher than the experimental results. For more accurate comparisons with experimental results, a numerical model is needed to estimate the cyclic lateral load-deformation response while accounting for the effects of local buckling, low cycle fatigue, and fracture. The low power density and high frequency loss of the core limits the miniaturization of high-frequency transformers (HFT) with an increase of the switching frequency. In this paper, a composite core with laminated nanocrystalline films and ferrite sheets is proposed based on the high saturation magnetic flux density of nanocrystalline and the low loss of ferrite. The two materials are laminated at a certain thickness ratio to form a composite unit. Then multiple layers of units are stacked to form the composite core. A homogenization model is established to calculate the equivalent permeability. Then the magnetic field strength of the composite core can be obtained, which can be used to calculate the magnetic flux density in different materials. An optimization model is built with the objective of optimizing the core loss and power density by adjusting the thickness ratio. Based on the non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm II (NSGA-II), it obtains the optimal thickness ratio. Simulation results show that the composite core increases the magnetic flux density from 0.3 T to 0.55 T over a ferrite core. A 100 V/200 V, 1 kW, 20 kHz composite core HFT prototype is developed. The power density is increased by 23.5% when compared to a ferrite HFT. The core loss is reduced by 37% when compared to nanocrystalline HFT, and the efficiency is increased from 94% to 96.5%. The graphite-resin composite bipolar plates prepared by the traditional hybrid pressing process exhibit poor conductivity, processability, and wettability due to the graphite flake layer being covered by resin, hindering the formation of a continuous conductive network, which significantly constrains their promotion and application in the field of proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFC). In this paper, an ultra-thin flexible graphite/epoxy composite bipolar plates (BPs) with a thickness of only 0.775 mm is prepared followed by a process of flexible graphite preforming and impregnation curing. The hydrophilicity-modified BPs surface has a contact angle of 59.01° as well as flexural and compressive strengths of 11 MPa and 4 MPa and possesses a high in-plane conductivity of 380 S/cm and a low in-plane specific resistance of 6 mΩ cm2. The electrostack test results show that the hydrophilic runner channel is more conducive to the diffusion and spreading of H 2 O generated from the cathode-side reduction reaction in the flow channel, so that O 2 smoothly passes through the gas diffusion layer to participate in the reduction reaction of O 2 , and exhibits higher electric power at high current density, while the hydrophobically modified BPs has relatively poor overall performance due to ohmic losses. In this paper, for reducing the number of independent generalized displacements of the traditional piecewise model to decrease the number of vibration equations, a refined piecewise shear deformation model considering the effect of rotary inertias and shear deformation for vibration analysis of laminated composite and sandwich plates is presented. Unlike the conventional piecewise model, the significant novelty of the proposed theory is that the new proposed piecewise theory reduces the number of independent generalized displacements from 9 to 8. Some relevant assumptions, dividing the transverse displacement into bending and shear parts, are introduced into the traditional piecewise model, and the displacement fields of the refined piecewise shear deformation theory are obtained. Next, the governing equations are derived by employing Hamilton's principle and solved by the closed-form Navier method. Then, the present solutions are compared with those available in the previous literature for confirming their validity. In this paper, minimization of delamination effect on laminated composite plates using smart (piezoelectric and magnetostrictive) materials has been investigated. The static and dynamic responses of the smart composite plates with/without delamination have been obtained using the finite element method. The validation and comparison studies of the laminated composite plate have also been performed to show the level of accuracy of the presently adopted model by solving a few examples related to static and frequency cases. For control and minimization of delamination effect, smart materials have been introduced at the various layers of the laminated panel. Further, the influence of delamination size, location, orientation scheme, aspect ratio, modular ratio and different boundary conditions on the dynamic response of the smart delaminated composite plate has been analyzed. Finally, optimization study has been carried out to find the optimal value of these parameters by minimizing the difference between the frequency responses. This paper investigates the free vibration analysis of cutout laminated composite plates resting on an elastic foundation of the Winkler and Pasternak type. An efficient isoparametric 9-noded Lagrangean C0 finite element method is developed based on five degrees of freedom (d.o.f) first-order shear deformation theory (FSDT), which has the benefit of the requirement of only one variable along the thickness to model the plate equations to obtain the numerical results from the formulation. The equation of motion of the plate is derived using the virtual work principle. The accuracy and efficiency of the current formulation are validated with established results concerning free vibration analysis of laminated composite plates on elastic foundations and plates containing cutouts. It is found that the results obtained using the present formulation have variation within ±1.5% of the established results. After sufficient validation of the present formulation, new parametric results are given for cutout laminated composite plates resting on elastic foundations with varying elastic foundation stiffness parameters, boundary conditions, cutouts, side-to-thickness ratios, and the aspect ratio of plate and fiber angle orientations. The impact of cutouts on the dynamic behavior of laminated composite plates is investigated, and interestingly, it is observed that cutouts alter the frequency response of plates when introduced to plates without elastic foundations or plates resting on elastic foundations having low stiffness parameters; however, when cutouts are introduced to plates with high elastic foundation stiffness, the cutouts have very negligible impact on the dynamic behavior of plates. In this paper, the simple refined plate theory (S-RPT) is extended for the analysis of the bending and buckling behaviours of functionally graded graphene platelets reinforced composite (FG-GPLRC) plates supported by local elastic foundations under different boundaries. For the first time, an analytical method for determining the location of the local elastic foundation distribution by simple integration is extended to the analysis of the bending and buckling behaviour of plates. The method avoids complex calculations compared to previous methods for determining the position of the elastic foundation. Compared with other simplified plate theories, the displacement pattern of S-RPT is able to reflect the interrelationship between the gradient material properties and the displacement distribution along plate's thickness. The material properties of FG-GPLRC plates are affected by temperature. Using the static equilibrium method, the plate equilibrium equations are derived by directly integrating the three-dimensional elastic equations along the plate cross section. Galerkin's method is used to solve the governing equations. The accuracy of S-RPT under different boundary conditions and the accuracy of the analytical method for determining the location of the elastic foundation are verified by comparing the numerical results with the existing literature. Finally, the effects of different distribution patterns, weight fractions of GPLs, thickness ratios, aspect ratios, boundary conditions, temperature, elastic foundation distribution patterns, and elastic foundation parameters were investigated in detail. This paper outlines an experimental investigation into the durability of large-scale adhesively bonded joints with a thick layer of methyl methacrylate adhesive (MMA). Ageing has been performed by immersion in a 3.5 wt% NaCl solution for 10 weeks at 50°C. Two aged and one unaged specimen were subjected to tensile testing, and three aged and one unaged specimen were loaded up to ~ 3.5 million fatigue cycles followed by a residual tensile test. The ductility of the adhesive is affected by ageing and fatigue testing. Despite a decrease in ductility, the plastic zone development was adequate for the required strain redistribution without compromising the joint performance (strength and stiffness) demonstrating the fatigue tolerance of the joint. The shear, longitudinal, and peel strain values in the adhesive bulk are evaluated by digital image correlation. The shear strength values are significantly higher than the requirements following from the design. All specimens failed by sudden delamination of the composite plate. It is widely recognized that certain structures, when subjected to static compression, may exhibit a bifurcation point, leading to the potential occurrence of a secondary equilibrium path. Also, there is a tendency of deflection increment without a bifurcation point to occur for imperfect structures. In this paper, some relatively unknown phenomena are investigated. First, it is demonstrated that in some conditions, the linear buckling mode shape may differ from the result of geometrically nonlinear analysis. Second, a mode jumping phenomenon is described as a transition from a secondary equilibrium path to an obscure one as a tertiary equilibrium path or a second bifurcation point. In this regard, some non-square plates with unsymmetric layer arrangements (in the presence of extension–bending coupling) are subjected to a uniaxial in-plane compression. By considering the geometrically linear and nonlinear problems, the bucking modes and post-buckling behaviors, e.g., the out-of-plane displacement of the plate versus the load, are obtained by ANSYS 2023 R1 software. In the present work, the general stiffness matrix method is extended in the case of a functionally graded magneto-electro-elastic plate to analyze the free vibration response of a functionally graded composite plate. The material properties are assumed to be continuously graded in the thickness direction. The novelty of this paper is to utilize this efficient method to the dynamic analysis of a wide range of composite (multilayer) plates, with linear or non-linear thickness profiles, and functionally graded in the thickness, without any limitation. The convergence of this method is thoroughly discussed. Here, the converged results are obtained when the number of sub-layer is $ N \le 11 $ N ≤ 11. A parametric study was also conducted to show the effect of gradation of mechanical properties of the composite on the phase velocity and the modal shape. Although various simplified models can capture size effects of composite laminated micro beam and plate by combining new modified couple stress theory, there is no benchmark to access the accuracy of predicting size effects in those models. Therefore this paper develops a quasi-3D model based on new modified couple stress as a benchmark for analyzing thermal size effects of composite laminated micro plate, and also proposes two simplified quasi-3D models with assumptions out of computational cost at the same time. By a classical example of simply-supported micro laminated square plate, several conclusions can be got from numerical results. For the present quasi-3D model under non-uniform temperature loading, (i): the model is capable to capture size effects of composite laminated micro plate, (ii): discovering a law to define the boundary size between micro and macro laminated plate, which is important for the engineering applications; For the simplified quasi-3D models under uniform temperature loading, (i): As the material length parameter l decreases, the accuracy of both of models is rising gradually, (ii): The first simplified quasi-3D model may substitute the present quasi-3D model to predict thermal size-dependent behaviors of composite laminated micro plate, whereas the second simplified quasi-3D model is suitable to laminated micro plate for which span-to-thickness ratio is no less than 14. In this paper, the nonlinear forced vibration responses of axially moving functionally graded carbon nanotube reinforced composite (FG-CNTRC) rectangular thin plates are investigated. In the frame of classical plate theory and von Kármán geometric nonlinear theory, the nonlinear partial differential equations of motion for axially moving FG-CNTRC plates are established by Hamilton's principle and discretized through the Galerkin method. The validity of the present model is verified by comparing the natural frequencies and the critical divergence velocity of the axially moving plate with the existing results in the literature. The frequency response curves (FRCs) of axially moving FG-CNTRC plates subjected to transverse harmonic concentrate excitation are calculated by using the incremental harmonic balance (IHB) method. The stability and bifurcation characteristics of period solutions obtained through the IHB method are analyzed by Floquet theory. The isolated detached resonance curves (DRCs) are observed inside the main continuous FRCs of axially moving FG-CNTRC plates. Saddle-node bifurcation, Hopf bifurcation, quasi-periodic motion and the internal resonance caused by the modal coupling effect are analyzed. The numerical results illustrate the effects of the CNT distribution, volume fraction, axially moving velocity, aspect ratio and width-to-thickness ratio on the nonlinear dynamic responses of axially moving FG-CNTRC plates. With the high precision requirements and the trend of large-scale composite parts, the development of composite molds is imminent. The short carbon fiber (SCF) composite mold is mainly prepared by the technological process flow of composite sheet injection, the bonding of composite plates, and machining. However, the current process optimization method has not matured adequately, and there are still many shortcomings, for example, low precision and high cost. In this paper, the optimization method of SCF/polyetherimide (PEI) composite molds is proposed. Many experiments have been conducted, and the results show that the coefficient of thermal expansion of composite samples can be effectively reduced and the mechanical properties can be improved by optimizing the SCF weight ratio and carbon fiber length. The bonding strength of composite joints in a high-temperature environment can be improved by optimizing the bonding process parameters and modification by carbon nanotubes. Based on the above optimization method, the SCF/PEI composite mold is prepared, and the C-shaped beam composite part is fabricated by using this mold. The advantages of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) in fortifying the glass fiber reinforced polymeric (GFRP) composites are discussed in this paper. Bolted steel straps are utilized at the edges of composite plate to establish clamped conditions in the test setup. To minimize uncertainties caused by bolt attachments, a genetic algorithm-based model updating approach has been implemented by introducing artificial linear springs at the margins to achieve a better balance between theory and reality. The accuracy of the plate's results (natural frequencies and mode shapes) is verified, and the mechanical properties of randomly dispersed CNTs are incorporated in the formulations of folded plates. Remarkably, the motion equations are brought forward by the first order shear deformation theory (FSDT). Thereafter, two-directional generalized differential quadrature (2D-GDQ) technique is employed to determine natural frequencies from available motion, continuity, and boundary equations. The results of the folded plate are validated first by an experimental modal testing and finally some effective parameters such as folding angle, CNT weight ratio, boundary condition and flange-shape length are examined. This paper provides a brief review on modeling of composite structures. Composite structures in this paper refer to any structure featuring anisotropy and heterogeneity, including but not limited to their traditional meaning of composite laminates made of unidirectional fiber-reinforced composites. Common methods used in modeling of composite structures, including the axiomatic method, the formal asymptotic method, and the variational asymptotic method, are illustrated in deriving the classical lamination theory for the composite laminated plates. Composite laminates have become increasingly popular in industries like aerospace and shipbuilding. In practical applications, the creation of notches in composite laminates is often necessary to enable assembly and modifications. This rise in the use of notched composite laminates highlights the need for reliable methods to predict potential failures in these components. With these predictions, the safety and reliability of composite structures can be ensured by preventing catastrophic failures. The present paper investigates the use of the Virtual Isotropic Material Concept (VIMC) combined with the Finite Fracture Mechanics (FFM) criterion to predict the Last Ply Failure (LPF) load in keyhole notched composite laminates and under mode I loading conditions. Experimental tests were conducted to measure the LPF load of E-glass/Epoxy keyhole notched specimens, and the results were compared with the predicted results using the VIMC-FFM criterion. The paper also derives an expression for the Stress Intensity Factor (SIF) function for a crack that emanates from the keyhole notch tip under mode I loading conditions. The derived equation matches very well with numerical data and have a mean absolute error about 2% in the studied domain. New three-phase composite structures reinforced synergistically by nano-fillers and macroscopic fibers have great application potential. This paper presents a general framework for material properties calculation and the free vibration analysis of three-phase composite shell structures. Based on this methodological system, the free vibration characteristics of three types of nano-enhanced functionally graded three-phase composite cylindrical shells are investigated. First, the equivalent mechanical properties of these three three-phase composites were evaluated using the Halpin–Tsai and Mori–Tanaka models. The governing equations for the cylindrical shells were derived based on the first-order shear deformation theory (FSDT) and Hamilton's principle. The equations were discretized using Galerkin's method and solved to obtain the natural frequencies and mode shapes. The finite element simulation results and existing literature verified the accuracy and reliability of the method in this paper. The synergistic effects of nano-reinforced fillers and macroscopic fibers on the free vibrations of these structures were also analyzed. Among them, the natural frequency of the three-phase composite cylindrical shells was the highest when graphene platelets (GPLs) were used as the nano-reinforced fillers, which was 150.32% higher than that of fiber-reinforced epoxy composite cylindrical shells. This paper elaborates on the wave propagation characteristics of a smart sandwich plate consisting of smart piezo composite layers on a plate's upper and lower borders via an auxetic core. This study's equation of motion was derived using a refined version of the Shear-deformation theory at a higher order, or HSDT. Additionally, detecting the properties of the auxetic core and piezoelectric composite layers employs a micromechanical model. The fundamental equations of the smart sandwich plates were formulated utilizing the Hamiltonian principle and Maxwell's law. Then, the governing equations of a sandwich plate are solved using an exponential form and an analytical method. Furthermore, the phase velocity of the intelligent sandwich plate is provided based on the layer thicknesses of the auxetic core and thicknesses of intelligent piezoelectric composite layers. This paper presents the time-domain viscoelastic formulation based on the Carrera unified formulation (CUF) to obtain the response of composite structures submitted to bending loads. The governing equations are obtained through a modified form of the principle of virtual displacement (PVD) for a viscoelastic analysis. The problem is solved using the Laplace transform instead of direct integration to reduce the computational cost. The results demonstrate the strong capability of the time-domain viscoelastic formulation. AbstractThis paper presents an analytical model for the free vibration of composite laminated plates with arbitrary biaxial symmetric geometry under elastic boundary conditions, applicable to cross-ply fiber-reinforced composites. In this model, the domain segmentation integral method proposed by the authors is extended to the first-order shear deformation theory (FSDT) and the laminated plate theory. The energy integrals pertaining to the FSDT are analytically simplified by segmenting the integration domains and synthesizing orthogonal polynomial displacement functions over the plate domain coordinate intervals. This synthesis is achieved through the amalgamation of the penalty function method and the Gram-Schmidt orthogonalization process. Then, using the Rayleigh-Ritz procedure, a series solution for the free vibration problem of cross-ply fiber-reinforced composite laminated plates is obtained. The model provides an analytical mathematical relationship between the profile curve of composite laminated plates with arbitrary biaxial symmetric geometry and the strain energy, kinetic energy, and boundary potential energy during vibrational processes. The correctness and applicability of the method are validated by comparing the obtained results with those from the literatures. New results for laminated plates, such as hexagonal and astroid-shaped plates, were presented as references for future research. The time difference of arrival (TDOA) method has traditionally proven effective for locating acoustic emission (AE) sources and detecting structural defects. Nevertheless, its applicability is constrained when applied to anisotropic materials, particularly in the context of fiber-reinforced composite structures. In response, this paper introduces a novel COmposite LOcalization using Response Surface (COLORS) algorithm based on a two-step approach for precise AE source localization suitable for laminated composite structures. Leveraging a response surface developed from critical parameters, including AE velocity profiles, attenuation rates, distances, and orientations, the proposed method offers precise AE source predictions. The incorporation of updated velocity data into the algorithm yields superior localization accuracy compared to the conventional TDOA approach relying on the theoretical AE propagation velocity. The mean absolute error (MAE) for COLORS and TDOA were found to be 6.97 mm and 8.69 mm, respectively. Similarly, the root mean square error (RMSE) for COLORS and TODA methods were found to be 9.24 mm and 12.06 mm, respectively, indicating better performance of the COLORS algorithm in the context of source location accuracy. The finding underscores the significance of AE signal attenuation in minimizing AE wave velocity discrepancies and enhancing AE localization precision. This work studied in detail for the first time the bending of laminated composite plates subjected t mechanical variations by new theory Trigonometric and Trigonometric-Hyperbolic functions of shear deformation. From the Euler-Lagrange hypothesis and the equations of the shear deformation theory, we will develop a present method. One of the most important problems of composite plates is the analysis of their bending behavior. The correct approach used to study their bending behavior includes two trigonometric and trigonometric-hyperbolic functions satisfying the null shear stress condition at the free edges. In this paper the bending problem is solved analytically by developing a computational code and numerically solved by Finite Element Method. In order to simplify the study of the bending behavior, an approach taking into consideration the effect of the transverse shear deformation without the shear coefficient of correction with only four unknowns has been developed while requiring five or more unknowns for other theories. Convergence analysis has been carried and the results are compared to open literature available for plate bending analysis. As one of the high-strength structures of the aerospace composite panels, the bonding of the stiffened skins affects the mechanical properties of the overall structure. A nonlinear detection method based on subharmonic modulation is proposed in order to detect the debonding damage of composite stiffened structures in the present paper. The debonding damage interface is simplified to a two-degree-of-freedom nonlinear model using interface contact theory. The multi-scale method is employed to analyse the generation mechanism of subharmonic modulation. The experiment is performed on the composite stiffened plate. Then based on the frequency response function characteristics of in-situ piezoelectric actuator/sensor, both high- and low-frequency excitation signals are applied to the composite stiffened plate, and the debonding damage of stiffeners is identified by the subharmonic modulation component in the response signal spectrum. It is shown, both theoretically and experimentally, that the subharmonic modulation method can effectively detect the interfacial debonding damage of composite stiffened structures and is insusceptible to the interference of environmental noise and the inherent nonlinearity of materials. A large number of experiments show that composite materials usually show different modulus properties in tension and compression (bi-modulus). However, for actual composite engineering structures, especially complex models, the numerical simulation calculation is usually based on a single modulus. In order to consider the different modulus characteristics of composite materials in tension and compression, researchers put forward simplified constitutive models of dual-modulus materials. However, these constitutive models have not been verified by a large number of experiments, especially by complex models. In this paper, the GWFMM model is simplified and used to analyze complex structures with different modulus in tension and compression. The experimental results of stiffened plate show that the improved GWFMM model can be used to analyze different modulus of tension and compression of complex stiffened structures. In addition, the influence of elastic modulus ratio in tension and compression under different experimental load conditions is further explored, and the influence law of bending and torsion on structures with bi-modulus is discussed. AbstractThis paper studies the free vibration and harmonic response of Functionally Graded Graphene/Epoxy composite plates, considering the First Order Shear Deformation Plate Theory. The weight fraction of graphene variation along the thickness direction with graphene homogeneous dispersed in a polymer matrix. The effective Young Modulus of the plate is predicted by a new micro-mechanical model. The model includes the aspect ratio and weight fraction of nanoplatelets embedded into the matrix. The modal and harmonic of Graphene/Epoxy plates are obtained by the Boundary Element Method formulation for composite plates. The Young modulus calculated from the proposed micro-mechanical model highly agrees with those obtained from experimental results reported in the literature. Results demonstrate a high correlation of the micromechanical model with experimental results and other analytical models. Graphene weight fraction and ratio aspect increase the effective Young modulus of the composite. Boundary Element results show high agreement with Finite Element solutions. Numerical results for modal and harmonic analysis show concentrating graphene near the top and bottom surfaces of the plate is the most effective way to reinforce the plate for increased natural frequencies. By using an effective theoretical model, efficiency and accuracy of design for laminated plates can be significantly improved. However, the existing five-variable higher-order models will encounter difficulty to accurately produce interlaminar stresses, which will influence evaluation on interlaminar performance of laminated plates. Thus, this paper attempts to propose an efficient higher-order model with five variables, where the Legendre polynomial is introduced into in-plane displacement field at each layer. By enhancing compatible condition of displacements and equilibrium condition of stresses, the unknowns depending on the layer number have been eliminated. Differing from other existing five-variable higher-order models, the proposed model can describe the zig-zag effect of in-plane displacements, and fulfill continuity of transverse shear stresses at interfaces. The governing equations are further derived through the principle of virtual displacement, and analytical solutions for only simply-supported plates have been presented. To assess the capability of the proposed method, three-dimensional elasticity solutions have been employed for comparison, and other five-variable higher-order models from the literature have been also chosen for assessment. Numerical results show that the proposed model possesses the same computational efficiency as the selected five-variable models, but can predict more accurate results. In addition, the proposed model is employed to analyze bending behaviors of sandwich and composite plates, and accurate results can be also acquired. The nonlinear buckling response of laminated composite cylindrical shells reinforced with graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs) is studied in this paper. The functionally graded (FG) shell reinforced by GNPs is analytically studied under external pressure and uniform temperature rise loadings. It is also assumed that the GNP-reinforced laminated composite shell is in contact with an elastic foundation. Various types of profiles are employed for the GNP distribution patterns in the shell thickness including 10 nanocomposite layers. The nonlinear strain-displacement relations of the shallow cylindrical panel are established utilizing the third-order shear deformation shell theory. Governing equilibrium equations of the laminated GNP-reinforced composite shell are formulated employing the principle of virtual displacement. The coupled system of nonlinear differential equations is solved analytically for the hinged–hinged and fixed–fixed boundaries of the shell using a perturbation-based technique. Correctness of presented formulations and obtained solutions is proved by comparisons with results from previous studies for an isotropic cylindrical shell. The paper investigates the normal interaction between the steel striker, carbon fiber and aramid fiber reinforced plastic plates at a speed ranging from 166.6 to 184.2 m/s. In this paper, a novel statistical vibration-based damage detection method is developed considering uncertainties in measured resonance frequencies. The proposed method is based on the application of resonance frequencies as the most accurate and easiest measurable vibration feature. For proof of efficiency of the proposed method, case studies were undertaken using two identical composite plates, one delaminated and the other pristine. In this respect, the frequency response functions (FRFs) were measured and used as the main input to the Resonance Detection Algorithm as the proposed method. Applying these FRFs to a Resonance Detector Function can determine the resonant frequencies and their statistical distribution. Through the statistical distributions of the corresponding resonant frequencies, their reliability of detecting damage has been obtained via the beta distribution. By observing the damage detection reliability of the two sets of corresponding resonant frequencies, it has been determined that the changes in natural frequencies are due to structural changes and not random errors through measurement. This paper presents a study of free and forced vibration of composite sandwich plate with and without damage using the finite element analysis developed under ANSYS APDL software. This modeling uses the 8-node shell 281 element to modelized the composite laminates of the top and bottom face sheets of the sandwich plate and the 20-node higher order solid 186 element to modelized the viscoelastic core. Two sets of boundaries are considered; Simply supported and clamped boundary conditions at all edges. The effect of damaged face sheets layers on natural frequencies, mode shapes, the frequency and transient responses of the sandwich plate is investigated. Numerical results show remarkable shifts of the natural frequencies, frequency and transient responses due to the presence of damage. It is concluded that the natural frequencies decreasing is due to the loss of structural stiffness. This paper aims to study the feasibility of implementing a new bio-composite with a sandwich structure made from date palm tree waste. This is done by valuing such waste, often left in palm groves and burned under most circumstances, which can be a vital resource at the lowest cost. This work has developed several sandwich-structured composite plates based on this waste. The skins are composite materials based on an epoxy matrix and palm tree fibers (Epoxy/Rachis fibers); the core was made of raw wood or a composite with petiole wood particles. After three-point mechanical bending tests, macroscopic analysis and SEM micrographs were used to determine what kind of damage the specimen had. Characterization tests on the new bio-composites showed good thermal properties; with a thermal conductivity below 1W/mK is between 0.0148W/mK and 0.0178W/mK. It is also characterized by its low volumetric mass, less than 1.2g/cm³. These properties make it a good thermal insulator, especially in environmentally friendly bio-construction areas making a sandwich-structured composite using palm tree waste is a very effective, environmentally friendly, and economically inexpensive option. This paper proposes a simple yet accurate finite element (FE) formulation for the thermomechanical analysis of laminated composites and sandwich plates. To this end, an enhanced first-order shear deformation theory including the transverse normal effect based on the mixed variational theorem (EFSDTM_TN) was employed in the FE implementation. The primary objective of the FE formulation was to systematically interconnect the displacement and transverse stress fields using the mixed variational theorem (MVT). In the MVT, the transverse stress field is derived from the efficient higher-order plate theory including the transverse normal effect (EHOPT_TN), to enhance the solution accuracy, whereas the displacement field is defined by the first-order shear deformation theory including the transverse normal effect (FSDT_TN), to amplify the numerical efficiency. Furthermore, the transverse displacement field is modified by incorporating the components of the external temperature loading, enabling the consideration of the transverse normal strain effect without introducing additional unknown variables. Based on the predefined relationships, the proposed FE formulation can extract the C0-based computational benefits of FSDT_TN, while improving the solution accuracy for thermomechanical analysis. Extracting time-varying dynamic characteristics of an aerospace structure under thermal-vibration environment is difficult and complicated since the material properties of the structure fluctuate although the external load is constant. Initially, a composite plate model applied for time-varying system is updated based on finite strip method. Afterward, a thermal-vibration experimental system for realizing high-precision data measurement is designed, and the preliminary experiment certified the validity of experimental method. Finally, the time-varying dynamic characteristics of a typical thermal protective system plate is researched. Results show that the natural frequencies take a downward tendency with respect to heating time, and will undergo a dramatic decrease when the structure reaches the critical bulking temperature, while the damping characteristic shows an adverse trend. In addition, for certifying the applicability and accuracy of the updated model, comparisons between present model and recursive subspace method are conducted. The nonlinear static and vibration response of micro composite sandwich plate with honeycomb core have been investigated in this paper. The displacement–strain of skins via higher-order shear deformation theory (HSDT) is obtained. In frame work Halpin–Tsai model the composites plate with two layers of Graphene platelet reinforcement (GPLRC) with uniform distribution pattern and a hexagonal honeycomb core is considered. Abstract: We present a model for the laminated composite plate problem based on the Reissner–Mindlin model and first-order lamination theory. The weak problem based on this model is solved with the finite element method using stabilized MITC (mixed interpolation of tensorial components) finite elements. Detailed a priori estimates are given for the mixed finite element formulation of the problem. Explicit bounds for the continuity and coercivity constants of the coupling terms are presented, thus refining earlier results. Furthermore, we present an application of the theory to the paper cockling problem and investigate the effect of boundary conditions on the small-scale deformation of the solution numerically. The mode manipulation of Lamb waves plays an important role in damage detection and identification of damage types, location, and size. In this paper, we propose a composite phononic crystal (PC) plate with antisymmetric and symmetric PCs for realizing mode conversion from A0 to S0 mode of Lamb waves. The theoretical analysis, numerical simulations, and experimental validation are introduced and the mode conversion mechanism of the composite PC plate is systematically investigated. The effect of geometrical parameters on band structures of antisymmetric and symmetric PCs is first discussed. Then multi-physics field simulation models are developed and in-plane displacement fields are obtained in numerical simulations, which shows that the mode conversion is enhanced when the period number of the antisymmetric PC decreases and that of symmetric the PC increases. The composite PC plate specimens are fabricated with precision wire cutting technology for experimental measurements and the self-designed polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) comb transducer is used to stimulate the Lamb waves. The experimental results are consistent with the numerical simulations, which demonstrate that the proposed composite PC plate can achieve the mode conversion from A0 to S0 mode of Lamb waves. In order to achieve high efficiency and low damage processing of hard and brittle materials, composite ultrasonic vibration-assisted face grinding (CUVAFG) has been proposed by comprehensively combining the high efficiency of axial ultrasonic vibration grinding (UVAG) and the low damage of elliptic ultrasonic vibration grinding (EVAG). However, the three-dimensional ultrasonic vibration brings about a more complicated machining mechanism than the previous ultrasonic vibration-assisted grinding methodology. Hence, in order to explore the grinding mechanism in deep, this paper first developed a new model of undeformed chip thickness for CUVAFG from the perspectives of the kinematic mechanism and elastic-plastic deformation mechanism. Then the influences of different processing parameters on interference rate and undeformed chip thickness were further confirmed. Finally, CUVAFG experiments of silicon carbide (SiC) ceramics were conducted to study the relationship between the undeformed chip thickness and the resultant grinding forces, specific grinding energy, ground surface morphology and roughness, and subsurface damage. It is found from the experimental results that the critical chip thickness of brittle-ductile transition in CUVAFG is between 0.31 and 0.35 μm. As the undeformed chip thickness is less than the critical value, the grinding forces and the specific grinding energy increases with the undeformed chip thickness, but the ground surface roughness decreases with improved surface morphology and shallow subsurface damage. After exceeding the critical value, the grinding force remains unchanged, the specific grinding energy decreases, and ground surface roughness increases with deteriorated surface morphology and deepened subsurface damage. For the purpose of good machining surface integrity, it is essential to guarantee that the undeformed chip thickness is less than the critical value. The paper deals with bifurcation and/or non-bifurcation post-buckling curves of composite plates under biaxial compression. For different lay-up sequences, a coupling, i.e. extension-bending (EB) is considered. The current investigations present distinct equilibrium paths describing when they have bifurcation-type and/or non-bifurcation-type responses. The novel parameter (i.e. EB coupling imperfection) is calculated to show the amount of non-bifurcation in the equilibrium path as a quantitative parameter. For the case of non-square plates, a novel mixed-mode analysis is conducted. The effects of different characters in laminated composites such as layer arrangement, loading ratio, aspect ratio, and boundary conditions are investigated. The combined influences of initial geometrical imperfection, elasticity of in-plane constraints of edges, elastic foundations and elevated temperature on the nonlinear vibration and dynamical response of carbon nanotube-reinforced composite rectangular plates are investigated in this paper. Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are reinforced into matrix according to functionally graded distributions. The properties of CNTs and matrix are assumed to be temperature dependent and effective properties of nanocomposite are determined using an extended rule of mixture. Governing equations in terms of deflection and stress function are established within the framework of thin plate theory including von Kármán nonlinearity, geometric imperfection and interactive pressure from elastic foundation. Analytical solutions are assumed for simply supported plates and Galerkin method is applied to result in nonlinear time differential equation. This nonlinear equation is solved using fourth-order Runge–Kutta scheme. Parametric studies are executed to examine numerous influences on the natural frequency, nonlinear to linear frequency ratio and nonlinear dynamical response of CNT-reinforced composite plates. The results reveal that increase in imperfection size results in increase and decrease in natural frequencies and the amplitude of forced vibration, respectively. This paper investigates the effect of an open hole on the stability of a compressed laminated composite plate. The study was carried out in two ways: using experimental tests and numerical analysis. As a result of the experiment, the buckling form and path of the plate were recorded. The form of buckling was determined using the ARAMIS non-contact measurement system. The critical load value was determined from the working path using the approximation method. The experimental results were verified by numerical analysis based on the finite element method. FEM investigations were carried out in terms of a linear eigenproblem analysis. This allowed the bifurcation load and the corresponding buckling form of the numerical model of the plate to be determined. Investigating the effect of the hole in the compressed plate at a critical state showed high agreement between the proposed test methods. No clear effect of the hole size on the buckling of the plate was observed. In contrast, a clear effect of the hole on the critical load value was determined. The maximum decrease in the critical load value was 14%. The same decrease was observed for the stiffness of the post-critical characteristics. In this paper, a research on theoretical analysis and finite element simulation of the damping sandwich composite plate with fixed support condition is carried out, and the dynamic characteristics of composite plates are explored by modal experiments. The vibration equilibrium equation of damping sandwich composite plate with fixed support condition is derived by combining first-order shear deformation theory, variational principle, and Hamilton principle. A set of modal basis functions satisfying the fixed support condition are established. The analytical solution is obtained via Galerkin weighted residual theory. The influence of structural parameters on the free vibration characteristics of the sandwich composite plates is investigated based on the mutual verification of theoretical calculation, numerical simulation, and modal test results. When the damping layer (0.2 mm) is located on the surface of the skin (2 mm), the first-order mode frequency and first-order loss factor are 196.66 Hz and 0.01, respectively. When the damping layer is in the neutral layer, the first-order mode frequency and first-order loss factor are 189.99 Hz and 0.14, respectively. Compared with the damping layer in the skin, the first-order mode frequency is reduced by 3.39%, while the first-order loss factor is 14 times higher. The results show that the damping performance of the structure is optimal when the damping layer is located in the neutral layer, and the structural stiffness is higher when the damping layer is close to the skin. This paper researches the free vibrations and corresponding material parameters of a functional gradient graphene platelets-reinforced composite (FG-GPLRC) cantilever torsional plates with both pore and graphene variations in the transverse direction. Utilizing the feature of closed-cell cellular solids, the mixture rule, and the modified Halpin–Tsai model, the material parameters of the composite are determined for different volume fractions of component materials. Then, using the classical plate theory (CLPT), the Rayleigh–Ritz technique and polynomials, the dynamic equation that can be used to obtain the free vibration mode shapes and frequencies of the rotating cantilever torsional plate is given. Comparison studies with the previous calculation results from available literature and the finite element (FE) models of cantilever plates are conducted, and the correctness of the present theoretical formulation and numerical calculation is verified. Finally, the effects of graphene platelet (GPL) distribution, porosity distribution (PD), GPL content, rotational speed, and average geometric size of GPL on free vibrations of the system are studied in depth.
