This paper adds to the limited evidence base around documentary representation of the wishes, feelings and views of children and young people involved in the child protection system. It presents the findings of a critical discourse analysis of 114 documents relating to 28 children and young people in the North of England who were the subject of a child protection conference (CPC) due to having experienced significant harm or the high likelihood of significant harm occurring. Three dominant and interlayering discourses were identified: a discourse of childhood, a discourse of participation and a discourse of professional social work practice. While some children and young people came to life in the reports and were afforded a unique identity, others were invisible and their views were marginalized. The findings support a dominant discourse of the unseen and unheard child, with participation normally mediated by power relationships between adults and children, and which marginalizes the experiences of children through a structurally constructed lens of risk and vulnerability. The findings signify the need to establish assessment practices and case reporting systems in which children are heard themselves as well as reported on by others. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article presents abstracts of papers presented at City University Centenary Conference, in London, England on June 1, 1994. All the speakers at the conference were former undergraduate or postgraduate students of the Department of Optometry and Visual Science at the university. This paper reports on a replication study of the first national survey commissioned by the RCN Ophthalmic Nursing Forum to assess the changing skill-mix of staff caring for ophthalmic patients and the nature of ophthalmic services. After minor modifications to the original questionnaire, it was circulated to the total population of ophthalmic units and hospitals in the United Kingdom (n=181). Following quantitative data analysis, it was found that the numbers of nurses holding ophthalmic nursing qualifications has risen to almost 50%, although this did not reach statistical significance. This increase has occurred alongside a significant rise in numbers of institutions offering ophthalmic nurse education and the expansion of day case surgery. Regional variations exist, however, to the extent that the increase in ophthalmic nurses and provision of ophthalmic nurse education has not been reflected nearly as much in Scotland as the rest of the UK. Overall, it was also found that the proportion of C, G and I grade nurses has fallen significantly, whilst the numbers of nurses graded D and F has risen. Abstract: Medical scientists have expressed scepticism about whether philosophy is relevant to medicine. We challenged this in a conference on the topic of “too much medicine” (TMM) held in Oxford in April 2017. The topic of TMM provided an opportunity to bring the two disciplines together because of its history both in philosophy and in medicine. We found that the collaboration between the two disciplines was fruitful when two conditions were met. First, both disciplines had to avoid discipline‐specific jargon. Second, each discipline had to engage with the other. Specifically, medical scientists had to engage with some philosophical literature, and philosophers had to “get their hands dirty with data.” In this conference report, we provide an overview of our discussions and summarize the other papers in the series.
