Water urbanism and more in general climate change adaptation are an essential part of urban transition processes. While sea level rising demands a re-evaluation of the new geography of extreme-cities, it emerges a temporal and conceptual gap between climate prediction, policies, adaptation strategies, and factual interventions. Consequently, the very same method of urban analysis needs to be reconsidered in light of this new horizon. This paper addresses extreme-cities as spaces of transition, and analyses the case of the Veneto Region via a multi-scalar process of mapping entailing: (i) zoning transition; (ii) mapping microtopography; (iii) sampling urban-topographical patterns; (iv) re-designing a territorial transect. The resulting representations disclose two types of information: (a) they suggest a set of rules for transitioning urban landscape in coastal areas according to different SRL scenarios; (b), they indicate the specificities of the same study area, disclosing a taxonomy of past and potential future elements of modification. Adaptation to climate change has become an imperative intricately linked to human existence and the planet's wellbeing: if learning is not part of the adaptation process, it is doubtful the adaptation will be sustainable. In Zimbabwe, one initiative for promoting learning for adaptation is the establishment of the Eco-Schools Clubs (ESC), a concept based on the possibilities of intergenerational learning developed and widely adopted in the Global North. Based on an ethnographic study in a community struggling with food insecurity arising from unpredictable rainfall, this paper examines the context-dependency of ESCs' affordances for intergenerational climate change learning. The study found that in contrast to reports from the Global North, the children in this study were not able to exercise agency to effect change in their families and communities. The pathogenesis of mycoplasmas requires their attachment to the epithelial mucosa membrane of the host cells, followed by colonisation and necrotic destruction of the submucosal tissue. The extent of this pathogenesis depends on the ability of species of Mycoplasma to effectively attach and invade the host's tissue. In this regard, the cytadherence tip organelle has evolved within the mycoplasmas to accomplish this feat. However, species of Mycoplasma that do not possess the specialized structure remain virulent with the use of surface-membrane lipoproteins. The lipoprotein ligands bind to sulfatides and sialoglycoconjugates on the host's mucosa membranes. This host-mycoplasma interaction, though poorly studied, appears to have a wide underlying array of complex molecular mechanisms, which after activation trigger cytadherence, immunomodulation and virulence. Mycoplasmas with their highly redundant minimal genomes display dynamic genotypic and phenotypic plasticity; a trait that has allowed them to adapt, persist and survive successfully in adverse niches through circumvention and tempering of the host's humoral immune response. Additionally, the linkages between the mycoplasmas persistence and chronic inflammatory diseases in humans necessitate examining the host-mycoplasma interaction at the proteogenomic level. This paper investigates the extent and the nature of how the urban planning literature has addressed climate change adaptation. It presents a longitudinal study of 157 peer-reviewed articles published from 2000 to 2013 in the leading urban planning and design journals whose selection considered earlier empirical studies that ranked them these journals. The findings reveal that the years 2006–07 represent a turning point, after which climate change studies appear more prominently and consistently in the urban planning and design literature; however, the majority of these studies address climate change mitigation rather than adaptation. Most adaptation studies deal with governance, social learning, and vulnerability assessments, while paying little attention to physical planning and urban design interventions. This paper identifies four gaps that pertain to the lack of interdisciplinary linkages, the absence of knowledge transfer, the presence of scale conflict, and the dearth of participatory research methods. This paper focused on the actions of the School Improvement Advisor/Researcher (SIA) reports on the results of research carried out in schools over the course of a decade, and discusses and evaluates this approach to the raising of standards in educational institutes. From a methodological standpoint, this approach is the evolution of a process that lies midway between action research and design-based research, during the phases of which the SIA is able to effectively combine coaching, aimed at raising standards in both the institute and in individual teachers, with the creation/development/adaptation of tools, whose primary function is to respond to the needs expressed by these players and to the problems they experience. The approach was developed on the basis of several considerations: on the one hand, relative to the processes of change in place and, on the other, to the related research processes. Choosing to proceed in such a way is not an arbitrary act but originates in both the difficulty the research 'academic' faces in establishing himself as a type of compass for teachers in their daily practice and also from the need to conduct action research where rigour is not simply sacrificed for the immediate relevance of results. Terms such as resilience, vulnerability and adaptation are heterogeneously defined in the contemporary climate-change adaptation literature and, hence, remain difficult to operationalize. In this paper, the authors offer a cultural evolutionary perspective, where these terms are mapped onto the terminology of triple-inheritance theory, which clarifies how risks arise through the complex interplay of social and ecological feedbacks. Studies of past risk, vulnerability and resilience are often conducted within a historical ecological framework. As both ecological (synchronic) and evolutionary (diachronic) understandings of human culture ultimately derive from the same source of inspiration – Darwinian evolutionary theory – they are, the authors argue, readily integrated. They take steps towards such an integration, which not only offers a unified theoretical and conceptual framework for studies of past and present vulnerability and resilience, but also provides explicit mechanisms for how issues of future vulnerability and resilience can be approached. Evidence abounds attesting to changes in the global climate. In Ghana, climate change and climate variability have brought several exposure-sensitivities on different people and at different times. Due to the multiplicity of climate change and climate variability effects, adaptation strategies invariably could be influenced by several factors. This paper assesses the adoption of adaptation strategies in the rural northern savannah zone of Ghana as a result of climate change and variability. Using two villages each from Savelugu Nanton, West Mamprusi and Kassena Nankana East Districts, which are slightly different as case studies, the paper unearthed panoply of varied adaptation strategies in each of them including intensification of irrigation; integration of livestock production; changes in tillage practices; fertiliser application on farms; shift from agriculture to non-farm jobs; seasonal migration and purchase of drought insurance for maize. The results indicate that the relativity in adoption and utilisation of the different adaptive strategies are interlinked with geographical, social, economic, institutional and political factors and processes in the villages. The findings drum home the essentiality of location-specific planned adaptation strategies for climate change through a bottom-up approach, in order to ensure their effectiveness and sustainability. Context: Epigenetics represents a still unexplored research field in the understanding of micro- and macro-evolutionary mechanisms, as epigenetic changes create phenotypic diversity within both individuals and populations. Objective: The purpose of this review is to dissect the landscape of studies focused on DNA methylation, one of the most described epigenetic mechanisms, emphasizing the aspects that could be relevant in human adaptations. Methods: Theories and results here considered were collected from the most recent papers published. Results: The matter of DNA methylation inheritance is here described as well as the recent evolutionary theories regarding the role of DNA methylation-and epigenetics in a broader sense-in human evolution. The complex relation between (1) DNA methylation and genetic variability and (2) DNA methylation and the environmental stimuli crucial in shaping genetic and phenotypic variability through the human lineage-such as diet, climate and pathogens exposure-are described. Papers about population epigenetics are also illustrated due to their high relevance in this context. Conclusion: Genetic, epigenetic and phenotypic variations of the species, together with cultural ones, are considerably shaped by a vast range of environmental stimuli, thus representing the foundation of all human bio-cultural adaptations. This paper introduces the terminology of (mal)adaptation opportunism - a situation in which projects undertaken in the name of climate change adaptation (CCA) are overrun by interests other than the stated or intended objectives of the CCA project. A goal of CCA projects is to reduce poverty and promote social justice. The case of the threat of displacement of the community of Kewunor by the Trasacco Estate Development Company (TEDC), after the construction of the Ada Sea Defense System (AdSDS) of Ghana as a CCA, is illustrative of this concept of (mal)adaptation opportunism. Through a narrative presentation of eight different accounts concerning this issue, I demonstrate how (mal)adaptation opportunism arises and is often motivated by economic interests. Antifragility is a system property that results in systems becoming increasingly resistant to external shocks by being exposed to them. These systems have the counter-intuitive property of benefiting from uncertain conditions. This paper presents one of the first known applications of antifragility to water infrastructure systems and outlines the development of antifragility at the city scale through the use of local governance, data collection and a bimodal strategy for infrastructure development. Towards the end of the century, Serbia will face a dramatic increase in annual temperature between 2°C and 6°C and decrease in annual accumulated precipitation up to 12%. Recent 2014 floods in Serbia, with more than 30 victims, and more than 30,000 displaced people, with overall damage close to €1.5 billion, reflected those trends and the likely risks that region will face due the changing climate. Those risks may influence the development process at the local level. This paper assesses the existing priority measures in local sustainable development strategies and re-interprets their characteristics using a methodological framework for the definition of adaptation measures. It offers a new understanding of the ongoing local sustainable development approach in the potentially most vulnerable municipalities in Serbia. The study focused on following properties of developmental measures: costeffectiveness, structural characteristics, target realm, spatial determination, time frame, climate responsiveness, and sector and budget allocation of development measures at the local level. The results of the analysis suggest that the initiation of adaptation planning should consider the improvement of the methodological framework - the introduction of inter-sectoral and cross-sectoral planning practice, cost-benefit analysis, the involvement of individual actors in planning and dynamic planning approaches. This paper aimed to investigate the genetic structure (GS) of Scots pine in the northern area of its distribution range by means of seven neutral nuclear microsatellite markers. In particular, the postglacial recolonization of these areas and possible different adaptation patterns in distinct refugia were studied. The GS and diversity were assessed with seven pairs of neutral nuclear microsatellite primers. A high genetic diversity was found in the Scots pine material tested, along with a shallow GS. This pattern is typical for recolonized areas and species with large population sizes, which are connected by pollen-mediated gene flow. A STRUCTURE analysis found two genetic groups to be the most likely, one south-eastern and one north-western group that meet in Fennoscandia. This indicates that Scots pine recolonization of Fennoscandia might have taken place from two different directions (south-west and north-east). Scots pine that recolonized the area originated in at least two different refugia during the last glacial maximum. The glacial survival in distinct refugia can have led to different adaptation patterns and growth optima in the different groups as reflected in the formation of latewood content, where lineage was a significant influencing factor. Although transformational change is a rather new topic in climate change adaptation literature, it has been studied in organisational theory for over 30 years. This paper argues that governance scholars can learn much from organisation theory, more specifically regarding the conceptualisation of change and intervention strategies. We reconceptualise the divide between transformational change and incremental change by questioning the feasibility of changes that are concurrently in-depth, large scale, and quick; and the assumption that incremental change is necessarily slow and can only result in superficial changes. To go beyond this dichotomy, we introduce the conceptualisation of continuous transformational change. Resulting intervention strategies include (1) providing basic conditions for enabling small in-depth wins; (2) amplifying small wins through sensemaking, coupling, and integrating; and (3) unblocking stagnations by confronting social and cognitive fixations with counterintuitive interventions. Climate change adaptation presents a challenge for all levels of governance. As impacts of climate change are most acutely felt at the regional and local level, there is a need to understand the limits and barriers of the design and implementation of adaptation measures on these levels. The aim of this paper is to focus on the regional level in Finland in order to identify the limits and barriers to regional implementation of climate change adaptation in the absence of steering from the national level. In order to do this, the paper draws on two empirical studies on adaptation within the regions of Uusimaa and Pirkanmaa in Finland. The paper describes the manner in which voluntary initiatives at the regional and local level have emerged, and regions have acted on adaptation in the absence of clear steering from the national level. This paper investigates the manner in which species acclimatisation takes place in new landscapes. Taking the example of mid-nineteenth-century Tasmania, Australia, where the Acclimatisation Society was a major, high-status institution involving the governing classes, scientists, major landowners and officials, the paper investigates how the successful acclimatisation of the brown trout (Salmo trutta) actually took place. It argues that is was not merely a question of introducing the animal into a new environment. Part of the agency of acclimatisation was enacted by trouts themselves, although this rarely figures in narratives of acclimatisation. The paper shows how trout agency was deployed to evolve a new way of life in the new landscape that had a profound impact on their relationship with human anglers and angling culture in Tasmania. Changes in climate and land cover are among the principal variables affecting watershed hydrology. This paper uses a cell-based model to examine the hydrologic impacts of climate and land-cover changes in the semi-arid Lower Virgin River (LVR) watershed located upstream of Lake Mead, Nevada, USA. The cell-based model is developed by considering direct runoff based on the Soil Conservation Service - Curve Number (SCS-CN) method and surplus runoff based on the Thornthwaite water balance theory. After calibration and validation, the model is used to predict LVR discharge under future climate and land-cover changes. The hydrologic simulation results reveal climate change as the dominant factor and land-cover change as a secondary factor in regulating future river discharge. The combined effects of climate and land-cover changes will slightly increase river discharge in summer but substantially decrease discharge in winter. Darwin’s theory of evolution is explicitly competitive, yet co-operation between individuals is a common phenomenon. The Prisoner’s Dilemma model is central to the teaching of the evolution of co-operation. The best-known explorations of the Prisoner’s Dilemma are the tournaments run by Robert Axelrod in the 1980s. Aimed at students of biological or behavioural science (post-compulsory education), this paper proposes a simplified, non-computer-based version of Axelrod’s Tournament which allows students to explore the Prisoner’s Dilemma using different behavioural strategies. In this classroom exercise, students become the players in a repeated Prisoner’s Dilemma situation. They investigate the outcomes of different strategies of play using a simple scoring system. After each generation of play, students discuss the evolutionary success of the strategies–strategies that score poorly are discarded and replaced with those that score well. Four generations of play are suggested, after which ‘Tit for Tat’ will have become the dominant strategy in the population, as it did during Axelrod’s original tournaments. TheSynura peterseniispecies complex represents a common, cosmopolitan and highly diverse taxon of autotrophic freshwater flagellates. In this paper, we describe and characterize four new species (S. borealis,S. heteropora,S. hibernicaandS. laticarina) that have been identified during our extensive sampling of freshwater habitats in 15 European countries. Morphometric analyses of siliceous scales led to the significant phenotypic differentiation of all four newly described species, and their separation from other related species of theS. peterseniicomplex. Two of these newly described species (S. hibernicaandS. borealis) can be clearly distinguished by characteristic large colonies consisting of elongated, lanceolate-shaped cells. Development of strongly elongated, narrow cells inS. hibernicacould be explained by the adaptation of this species to oligotrophic conditions. Though morphologically distinct,S. borealispossesses an exceptionally high degree of genetic diversity, possibly indicating recent speciation and evolutionary diversification within this taxon. Three of the four newly described species exhibit restricted biogeographic distribution. The evolutionarily relatedS. borealisandS. laticarinaoccur only in Northern Europe, and seem to be adapted to colder areas. This paper describes the adaptation of agricultural management practices due to structural changes in the urban periphery of Hyderabad, India. We investigate structural-change drivers along with the most common types of adaptation realised by peri-urban farmers and the corresponding environmental impacts. From 120 farmer interviews, in which qualitative and quantitative data were collected, we found that increasing costs for agricultural inputs such as labour and land have motivated farmers to intensify water, machine and chemical use, thereby creating problematic environmental impacts. In addition, farmers also resort to part-time farming and organise efforts to share family labour. Based on these findings, we discuss agricultural policies and strategies within the framework of environmental planning and management for the Greater Hyderabad Area (GHA), drawing policy-design conclusions that may enable better integration of farming into the on-going process of megacity development. This paper examines two opposing perspectives on the debate about whether music is a biological adaptation or a technology. Those who espouse the first perspective claim that recent explorations into the intrinsic musical nature of human communication suggest an adaptive function for ‘communicative musicality.’ The main proponent of the second perspective argues that music is not an adaptation, but considers it biologically significant as a transformative technology. Based on my research into northern Chineseshuochang(‘speaking-singing’), I support the notion that musilanguage—an evolutionary antecedent of communicative musicality—is an adaptive trait, and considershuochanga modern example that displays some of the characteristics of musilanguage, reflecting a difference between semanticity and musical play as the two ends of the musilinguistic spectrum. At the same time, I also suggest thatshuochanghas been technologised by written orthographies, making it an example of a transformative technology. In addition to recognising the significance of play on the musical side of the musilanguage gamut, I argue that humans are predisposed to technologising musilanguage, particularly in using some kind of visual orthography. I also suggest that neophilia—a biological instinct to search for the novel—may well be the root of musical play as well as the proclivity to technologise it. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

What role can aspirations play in small-scale human development interventions? In this paper, we contribute to answering that question with both conceptual and empirical work. Aspirations can play at least two roles in small-scale human development interventions: the capabilities-selecting role and the agency-unlocking role. While aspirations also face the challenge of adaptation to adverse circumstances and unjust social structures, we argue that this challenge can be met by embedding the formulation and expression of aspirations within a setting of public discussion and awareness-raising activities, and that adaptation can be further countered by including a commitment to action. We then report on field research done in Khayelitsha, a township in Cape Town, South Africa, where a group of women went through a process of voicing, examining, and then realizing their aspirations. The action research confirms our theoretical hypotheses. We also do not find any evidence of adaptation of the women's aspirations, and argue that the absence of such adaptation might be a result of active capability selection, reflection, deliberation, and the exercise of agency throughout the action research programme. Adaptation to climate change has to various degrees been added to the political agenda in all industrialised countries. In most of these countries, adaptation measures are yet to be implemented in legislation and are, therefore, in practice voluntary undertakings. At the local level of the government, this means that adaptation has to compete with other non-mandatory issues. This raises the question as to what degree adaptation can and will be implemented. This paper examines how the implementation of climate adaptation measures has proceeded in eight Norwegian municipalities. These municipalities were among the first movers on adaptation to climate change in Norway. In order to measure the degree of implementation, a set of indicators has been developed and the eight case municipalities have been analysed according to these indicators. We found that seven of eight municipalities have implemented or have specific plans to implement adaptation measures. These findings show that municipalities are able to implement adaptation policies that are not initiated at the central level, but are contingent upon a number of factors: the efforts of individuals within the municipal organisation, municipal size, and the use of external expertise. Adaptation to climate change is often perceived as a local concern; yet local stakeholders are influenced by knowledge and politics from international and national contexts. Based on a review of Swedish climate change adaptation policy and interviews and focus groups in the Stockholm region, this paper discusses how knowledge relevant to climate change adaptation has been institutionalised in Sweden and how this may affect the potential for learning. The results indicate that the institutionalising of knowledge and knowledge exchange has been weak, especially compared to the implementation of Local Agenda 21, which also calls for action at the local level. So far, Swedish adaptation policy has relied mainly on soft governance tools. Adaptation to the impacts of climate change has become a concern in the Nordic countries. Regional responses to climate change impacts are considered to be crucial since they are likely to target specific vulnerabilities with concrete and feasible adaptation measures. The ability of the region to respond to climate change is determined to a large extent by its adaptive capacity that consists of economic, social and political capacity, as well as infrastructure and technological potential. This paper assesses the generic adaptive capacity of Nordic regions by using a set of indicators that reflect five determinants of adaptive capacity. The results of the assessments are presented in maps that illustrate that Nordic regions have high capacity but there are also significant differences between and within countries. Finally, this article also discusses arguments for and against the use of these kinds of assessments in policy-making, and the implications of this for the Nordic countries. This paper explores community perspectives of environmental change and the role development actors in the regional Nepali town of Nepalganj. Understanding these perceptions is crucial for planning future adaptation to climate change and ensuring that these measures are sustainable and in line with community priorities. Firstly, I contend that whilst the local community in Nepalganj may be experiencing the impacts of climate change, they are unfamiliar and disassociated with the concept. Secondly, I identify a number of risks and opportunities around the role of local government, international development organisations and local non-government organisations in future adaptation actions. Participant perceptions of these institutions in their community reinforce a number of established critiques of development around themes such as poor consultation and short project timelines. This paper describes Artiotonus, a new genus of tropical katydid from Colombia and Ecuador. These acoustic ensiferans are represented by three species with a geographic distribution generally restricted to the rainforest of the Bolivar geosyncline of northwestern South America (Pacific). A phylogenetic analysis based on 28 morphological and six behavioural characters produced a tree (A. artius, (A. tinae, A. captivus)) with a consistency index of 0.9. All species are defined by a few autapomorphic changes. The most reliable character for identification is the temporal pattern of the calling song, suggesting a recent genetic divergence. Biogeographic analysis indicates that such genetic divergence began with geographic isolation produced before the Holocene transgression. Species of this genus are remarkable in that the calling song of males exhibits a narrow spectrum with a high quality factor (37-42), unusual values for such ultrasonic signals. The origins of agriculture involved pathways of domestication in which human behaviours and plant genetic adaptations were entangled. These changes resulted in consequences that were unintended at the start of the process. This paper highlights some of the key innovations in human behaviours, such as soil preparation, harvesting and threshing, and how these were coupled with genetic 'innovations' within plant populations. We identify a number of 'traps' for early cultivators, including the needs for extra labour expenditure on crop-processing and soil fertility maintenance, but also linked gains in terms of potential crop yields. Compilations of quantitative data across a few different crops for the traits of non-shattering and seed size are discussed in terms of the apparently slow process of domestication, and parallels and differences between different regional pathways are identified. We highlight the need to bridge the gap between a Neolithic archaeobotanical focus on domestication and a focus of later periods on crop-processing activities and labour organization. In addition, archaeobotanical data provide a basis for rethinking previous assumptions about how plant genetic data should be related to the origins of agriculture and we contrast two alternative hypotheses: gradual evolution with low selection pressure versus metastable equilibrium that prolonged the persistence of 'semi-domesticated' populations. Our revised understanding of the innovations involved in plant domestication highlight the need for new approaches to collecting, modelling and integrating genetic data and archaeobotanical evidence. The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change mandates parties to prepare for adaptation to climate change. This is of direct relevance to the management of wildlife. Climate change is likely to alter and/or expand the habitats of wildlife and may make the conditions within existing habitat ranges unsuitable for the continued existence of a species. Of necessity, efficacious adaptation must attempt to address this likelihood. Using New Zealand as a case study, this paper considers the range of present legal instruments that might be utilized within that nation to manage the movement of wildlife and identifies any lacunas that should be addressed. Public communication of science is still largely conceptualized within a 'transfer' paradigm that describes it as a displacement of results and ideas from the specialists to the lay public, problematizing the public, the media, (sometimes) science, but crazy rarely the notion of communication itself. This paper is a preliminary attempt to see if the discourse about genes and the genome can help us to problematize the concept of communication in relation to science, rethink our mode/s of public communication of science and, snore generally, the metaphors we employ to describe communication. It is suggested that the relationship between science and the public could be understood better by viewing communication through metaphors drawn from contemporary biology, e.g. as 'cross-talk' between the specialist and public discourse or as a 'double helix' coupling the two dimensions under certain conditions. Background or ambient concentrations are often considered in the evaluation of potential risks to ecological receptors from exposure to hazardous chemicals in the environment. Such an evaluation may be a component of the screening or final risk management process and sets the baseline from which risks contributed by site-related activities can be addressed. Although the process for the evaluation of potential radiological risks to ecological receptors is less formalized than the chemical hazard assessment process, background remains an issue that should be addressed when considering potential site-related impacts. This paper briefly presents the ecological risk assessment approaches used to address background radionuclide concentrations at three United States Department of Defense Facilities. Circadian clocks are ubiquitous and are found in organisms ranging from bacteria to mammals. This ubiquity of occurrence implies adaptive significance, but to date there has been no rigorous empirical evidence to support this. It is believed that an organism possessing circadian clocks gains fitness advantage in two ways: (i) by synchronizing its behavioral and physiological processes to cyclic environmental factors (extrinsic adaptive value); (ii) by coordinating its internal metabolic processes (intrinsic adaptive value). There is preliminary circumstantial evidence to support both. Several studies using organisms living in constant environments have shown that these organisms possess functional circadian clocks, suggesting that circadian clocks may have some intrinsic adaptive value. Studies to assess the adaptive value of circadian clocks in periodic environments suggest that organisms may have a fitness advantage in those periodic environments, which closely match their own intrinsic periodicity. Furthermore, evidence from organisms living in the wild, selection studies, and studies on latitudinal clines suggest that circadian clocks may have an extrinsic adaptive value as well. In this paper, I have presented several hypotheses for the emergence of circadian clocks and have reviewed some major empirical studies suggesting adaptive significance of circadian clocks. This paper takes a detailed look at the occurrence of genetic adaptations and ecological impacts at three contaminated sites (Foundry Cove, Bayou Trepagnier, Pass Fourchon) to assess the co-occurrence of adaptation and ecological impacts and the implications for risk assessment. Community-level ecological impacts were reported for all three sites. However, there was little evidence of population-level impacts (on the six populations that were also assessed for adaptation). Similarly, adaptation was found in only one of the populations. While this review provides an incomplete picture (adaptation was assessed on only a small subset of the species present and the reasons behind the lack of adaptation in the five populations remained unknown), it indicates that adaptation is uncommon even where ecological impacts are obvious. Theoretical considerations also predict that contaminants can have large impacts without resulting in an adaptation. While adaptation to a contaminant reflects an impact by that contaminant, the three case studies indicate that determining whether or not resistance has evolved does not appear to be a very efficient tool for detecting ecological impacts. Nevertheless, assessing the occurrence of adaptation does have a place in risk assessment, especially when assessing the likelihood of local extinction of a particular population. The regular and sometimes prolonged exposure of emergency responders to critical incidents and disasters highlights the need for proactive stress management strategies that facilitate adaptation if their wellbeing and performance effectiveness is to be sustained. While discussion of adverse reactions has dominated the disaster and traumatic stress literature, growing empirical and theoretical evidence for positive and adaptive outcomes signals a need for alternative conceptualisation of the disaster stress process. Using a risk management framework, this paper discusses an approach to conceptualising disaster stress risk that can be used to develop readiness strategies that facilitate an adaptive response to disaster stress. Central to developing an adaptive capability in this context is modelling these relationships. This process is illustrated here by reviewing empirical and theoretical evidence that describes how incident, operational and organisational demands interact with resilience and vulnerability factors to affect stress risk during the response and reintegration phases of disaster response. Issues discussed in this context include role conflict, multi-disciplinary team development and management, information management, crisis decision making, organisational culture and practices, work-family interface, group cohesion, and social support. The implications of the outcome of this risk assessment process for the development of the risk management polices, procedures and practices required for effective risk reduction, and thus for developing readiness strategies capable of facilitating adaptation and stress resilience, is also discussed.
