Near-fault ground motions (NFGM) may have a significant component of the long period velocity pulse (LPVP) due to the directivity effect. The structures subjected to such ground motions are prone to experience large displacements. In this paper, the damage potential of such motions is compared with NFGM (without LPVP) and far-field motions in terms of seismic demand (inter-storey drift and inelastic displacement). Due to the lack of site-specific recorded NFGM, the synthetic ground motions are generated and used in this study. For this purpose, first the bedrock motions are obtained through stochastic simulation approach in which the Specific Barrier Model (SBM) is used as source spectrum and then these motions are transferred to the ground surface using one-dimensional ground response analysis. In order to obtain the NFGM with pulse, the bedrock motions are superimposed with the LPVPs and then transferred to the ground surface. To illustrate, the case of a ten-storey reinforced concrete (RC) building is considered in Delhi region (India) which falls under the seismic zone-IV. The main finding of this study is the observation that the NFGM with LPVP impose almost double seismic demand compared to the NFGM without LPVP, specially for the structures lying in the velocity-region of the response spectrum. Air pollution is one of the significant environmental issues. It can cause adverse health effects such as cancer, cardiovascular diseases, and high mortality rates. High population density is a huge contributory factor of air pollution in cities and urbanized areas. Other sources of air pollution are transport, local heating, and possibly a pollution transfer from neighboring industrial regions. Information about the opening and closing of industrial plants, stubble burning, and fireworks can be considered an added value to this work. In recent past years, among the Delhi/National Capital Region. The pollution level has been raised multiple times during November and March months. The most significant root cause of this trouble is stubble-burning air pollution in the neighboring cities like Punjab and Haryana. Another concern is the burning of fireworks in these months due to Diwali and other festivals in the cities. This research paper aims to perform a data-based analysis on the PM2.5 and PM10 concentration levels of the past six years month-wise from the authenticated sources to find out the causes of extreme air pollution levels. This research paper deals mainly with long-term time series, including air pollutants PM2.5, PM10, and other meteorological variables. It models and analyzes the PM2.5 and PM10 values for 2014–2018. The present research work also deals with the facts and methods to handle the high air pollution rate in Delhi/NCR caused by stubble burning and analysis the effect on the environment by the call of Honorable Prime Minister of India Shri Narender Modi Ji for the illusion of candles as a symbolic fight against COVID 19. The paper explores the factors that induce people of so-called North-East India to collectively identify themselves as Northeasterners. It also examines the factors that lead them to be categorised by others as Northeasterners. This is done against the backdrop of a geometrical error in ascertaining the direction of so-called North-East India with reference to the present national capital, Delhi. The colonial project of categorisation of its subjects in the 'north-east frontier of Bengal' and sustained categorisation and identification of the same in free India is understood within the framework of social identity theory. Theoretically, the paper extends the social identity theory by adding the aspects of social validation and social invalidation to understand the materialisation and non-materialisation, respectively, of perceived social identity with respect to a group. To address the issues arising from the erroneous categorisation of places and people with a colonial arbitrary term 'North-East', the author proposes principles of individualisation and human rights. The principle of individualisation offers a possibility towards respecting the unique individual identity of the constituent groups of so-called North-East India and thus allows the ceasing of violation of human rights of the people. Seismic catalogue preparation is one of the important steps of probabilistic seismic hazard assessment (PSHA). Catalogue preparation includes homogenization and declustering as the main stem of pre-processing followed by a completeness check to arrive at the recurrence relation. Homogenization is the process of converting the events reported with different magnitude scales into a uniform scale whereas declustering is the process of removing dependent events, i.e. foreshocks and aftershocks from an earthquake catalogue. Accepting the subjectivity involved in the adopted process of homogenization and completeness check, the selection of declustering method apparently results in significantly different declustered catalogues owing to the variation in respective spatial and temporal interaction zones. This paper is aimed to investigate sensitivity of the selection of declustering method on the resulting recurrence relations. Indian catalogue (2474 BC to July 2020 AD) and that in three smaller regions (Delhi, North-East, and Andaman) of 300-km radius are considered for the purpose of investigation. Standard approach is used for homogenization. Two widely used procedures of declustering are considered: one requires a set of specific model parameters whereas the other does not. A uniform space–time window is recommended to be used with the former regardless of the selection of model parameters followed by Stepp's method for the completeness check. Proposed modification does not only make the former approach less sensitive (in terms of number of events and resulting recurrence relation parameters) to the model parameters but also leads to the consistent results when compared with the latter approach. Accurate forecasting of air pollutant PM2.5(particulate matter with diameter less than 2.5 µm) is beneficial to society. However, the non-linear spatio-temporal correlations, multi-feasible forecast values and incomplete training data due to stochasticity make it challenging for discriminative deep learning approaches to forecasting PM2.5 data. In this paper, a generative modeling approach is proposed to overcome the challenges in forecasting PM2.5 data by considering it as an ill-posed inverse problem. To strengthen its applicability, the proposed approach is theoretically validated. Furthermore, based on the proposed generative modeling, an Autoencoder-based generative adversarial network (GAN) named Air-GAN is developed. Air-GAN combines a convolutional neural network- long short-term memory (CNN-LSTM) based Encoder with a conditional Wasserstein GAN (WGAN) to capture non-linear correlations in the data distribution via inverse mapping from the forecast distribution. The condition vector to conditional WGAN is the novelty in Air-GAN, which employs this inverse learning and allows the WGAN's Generator to generate accurate forecast estimates from noise distribution. The condition vector is composed of two elements: (1) the category label of the best correlated meteorological parameter with the PM2.5 data, assigned using an efficient classifier and (2) the output of the CNN-LSTM-based Encoder which is the latent representation of the forecast. The extensive evaluation of Air-GAN for predicting the real-time PM2.5 data of Delhi demonstrates its superior performance with an average inference error of 5.3 µg/m3, which achieves 31.7% improvement over the baseline approaches. Education and employment are pathways to greater financial well-being which is presumably of great salience to poor populations. However, either or both of these may increase aspirations. The social norms that restrict the autonomy of women may mute the impact of education and employment in a way that does not happen to men. To address this hypothesis, the paper uses primary data from a survey of over 1000 respondents across slums in Delhi. The paper finds that education and employment does reduce the well-being of women relative to men. We show that these gender varying correlations are robust to omitted variables bias. Climate change and urbanization are significantly magnifying flood hazard, leading to a greater vulnerability of urban concentrations. This paper investigates the impact of climate change on urban flooding using future projected rainfall data and a calibrated hydraulic model. Two urban watersheds in Delhi, India (the Qudesia Nallah catchment and the Jahangirpuri drain catchment) are considered to evaluate the climate change impact on urban flooding. Regional climate models (RCMs) are used to project future precipitation, which is then utilized by the hydraulic model to evaluate the impact on flooding. Climate data from three RCMs extracted from the Coordinated Regional Climate Downscaling Experiment (CORDEX) are used to study the impact of climate change for historical (1990–2016) and future scenario (Representative Concentration Pathway (RCP) 4.5, 2021–2100). The rainfall projections are fed as 2-, 5-, 10-, and 20-year return periods to a calibrated hydrodynamic Storm Water Management Model (SWMM). The results show that the flooded nodes vary between 2–6 and 12–43, respectively, in the Qudesia Nallah catchment and the Jahangirpuri drain catchment under present conditions but increase from 11 to 51 and 42 to 91, respectively, for future climate conditions. The results suggest that the risk of occurrence of flooding, duration, and frequency in the two study areas will increase in the future when compared to those under the present conditions. The results also indicate that the damage induced by the 20-year return period rainfall at the present time will likely be caused just by the 2-year return period in the future. This is due to the greater likelihood of rainfall extremes in the region. The paper investigates the status of gravitational energy in Newtonian Gravity (NG), developing upon recent work by Dewar and Weatherall. The latter suggest that gravitational energy is a gauge quantity. This is potentially misleading: its gauge status crucially depends on the spacetime setting one adopts. In line with Møller-Nielsen's plea for a motivational approach to symmetries, we supplement Dewar and Weatherall's work by discussing gravitational energy–stress in Newtonian spacetime, Galilean spacetime, Maxwell-Huygens spacetime, and Newton–Cartan Theory (NCT). Although we ultimately concur with Dewar and Weatherall that the notion of gravitational energy is problematic in NCT, our analysis goes beyond their work. The absence of an explicit definition of gravitational energy–stress in NCT somewhat detracts from the force of Dewar and Weatherall's argument. We fill this gap by examining the supposed gauge status of prima facie plausible candidates—NCT analogues of gravitational energy–stress pseudotensors, the Komar mass, and the Bel-Robinson tensor. Our paper further strengthens Dewar and Weatherall's results. The Galilean gravitation derives from a scalar potential and a vector one. Poisson's equation to determine the scalar potential has not the expected Galilean covariance. Moreover, there are three missing equations to determine the potential vector. Besides, we require they have the Galilean covariance. These are the issues addressed in the paper. To avoid the drawbacks of the PPN approach and the NCT, we merge them into a new framework. The key idea is to take care that every term of the c expansion of the fields are Galilean covariants or invariants. The expected equations are deduced by variation of the Hilbert–Einstein functional. The contribution of the matter to the functional is derived from Souriau's conformation tensor. Housing quality is crucially linked to health and sustainability goals, yet there is limited research on informal housing and settlements where housing quality is poor, and the health risks are expected to be greatest. This paper describes the investigation of housing conditions in a low-income resettlement colony in Delhi. A novel transdisciplinary methodology to evaluate multiple housing health hazards and establish intervention priorities in participation with the community was developed. Findings from housing surveys and indoor environmental monitoring were contrasted with a participatory self-assessment—revealing the widespread prevalence of hazards and suboptimal housing conditions as well as substantial differences in priorities, and thus perspectives, between participants and researchers. Focus group discussions explored the findings and built consensus on priorities. Our findings uncovered how poor housing conditions affect daily practices and thus are likely to adversely affect socio-economic development and gender equality. We highlight limitations in current frameworks to assess housing hazards and argue that a transdisciplinary approach is vital to provide a holistic understanding and to develop effective interventions. These insights are crucial to inform inclusive solutions for adequate housing and human settlements that can support improved health and help achieve the sustainable development goals. Recently there has been a growing interest in the applicability of reversible circuits. Reversible circuits are designed using reversible gates, which can efficiently reconstruct the previous state of the computation from the current state. These circuits may find potential applications to the future generation of optical and quantum computers. To ensure the reliability of these circuits, testing is a mandatory phase of the design cycle. Several fault models have been introduced for reversible circuits among which some of them have been taken from the conventional circuits. In this paper, we consider the problem of testing bridging faults (such as single and multiple input bridging faults, single and multiple intra-level bridging faults) in a reversible circuit designed with the NOT, CNOT, Toffoli gates (NCT library) and generalized (n-bit) Toffoli gates (GT library). We propose an Automatic Test Pattern Generation (ATPG) method using the Path-Level expression for generating the minimal complete test set to detect the faults mentioned above. The paper presents the temporal variations of surface ozone (O) and its precursors (oxides of nitrogen (NO), carbon monoxide (CO), methane (CH) and non-methane hydrocarbons (NMHCs)) along with particulate matter (PM and PM) and their relationship with meteorology during January 2012 to December 2014 at an urban site of Delhi, India. The mean mixing ratio of surface O, NO, CO, CH and NMHCs were 29.5 ± 7.3 ppb, 34.7 ± 11.2 ppb, 1.82 ± 0.52 ppm, 3.07 ± 0.37 ppm and 0.53 ± 0.17 ppm, respectively. This study also comprises an analysis of the relation between UV irradiance and surface O. A relationship between the total oxidant concentrations (OX) and NO has been used to identify the regional background O values and the local levels of primary pollution. An attempt has been made to identify the existence of NO or NMHC sensitive regime by charting out relationships between O, NO and NMHCs. The respective high pollution periods of surface O and PM differ on a seasonal timescale. Linear regression analysis has been used to quantify the negative influence of the chemical constituents of PM (elemental carbon, NO , SO ) on O values. Statistical validation using bivariate correlation analysis, multiple linear regression (MLR) analysis and principal component analysis (PCA) strongly describes the intricate relationships among the aforesaid variables and meteorology. Potential Source Contribution Function (PSCF) and Concentration Weighted Trajectory (CWT) analysis indicated upper Indo-Gangetic Plain (IGP) as a significant source region of O precursor gases contributing for O values at the study site. The present paper reports chemistry and fluxes of dust-carbon mixed coarse particles. For the purpose of this study, different carbonaceous fractions i.e. organic carbon ((OC), elemental carbon (EC) and carbonate carbon (CC) of atmospheric dust and their respective local soils were quantified at three sites of National Capital Region (NCR) of Delhi viz. Jawaharlal Nehru University campus (JNU), Connaught Place (CP) and Vishali area of Ghaziabad (GB). It has been observed that the OC and EC levels were approximately five to nine times higher in urban atmospheric dust than their corresponding soils, whereas CC levels were about three times higher than the corresponding soils. Average dustfall fluxes were significantly different at all the sites due to their different land-use patterns. At urban background site (JNU), the dust flux was lowest (172 mg/m/day) followed by CP, a commercial site, (192 mg/m/day) and GB, an industrial/residential area, (302 mg/m/day). Similar to the dustfall pattern, the mean values of OC, EC and CC deposition fluxes were also observed to be lowest at JNU (9.2, 0.8 and 1.0 mg/m/day, respectively) as compared to CP (12.2, 1.2 and 1.3 mg/m/day, respectively) and GB sites (11.1, 1.1 and 1.4 mg/m/day, respectively). Interestingly, unlike fine mode, different correlation pattern of OC and EC in coarse mode dust aerosols at three sites has suggested their independent deposition processes and source contribution. Fluxes of major water soluble inorganic ions (Na, NH , K, Ca, Mg, F, Cl, NO and SO ) were also determined. Ca, Cl and SO were found to be the major ionic species of water soluble fraction of the urban dust at all the sites. These interactions are corroborated by the morphology of the mixed aerosols. Urban transport has serious problems that are symptoms of the general process of rapid urbanization and environmental degradation. Policymakers in general and urban economists in particular have paid little attention to public transport system pricing leading to the absence of a financially viable, self-supporting urban transport system. In this paper, we report a partial equilibrium model developed by us, which captures transport tax reforms in the presence of certain transport externalities. Our theoretical model shows that the question of public transport subsidies to reduce congestion and provide quality transport services depends on three factors: (a) the extent to which such subsidies induce people to switch from private transport to public transport; (b) if the price elasticity of current users of public transport is higher, there may be a sharp rise in public transport ridership as a reaction to increased subsidies, which will have an undesirable effect; and (c) there is the danger that subsidies will cause a loss in productive efficiency. The numerical model of our paper for Delhi shows that the cross price elasticity of public transport demand with respect to the price of private transport is significant (0.63) in the off-peak period whereas the same in the peak period is somewhat low (0.16) and the combined effect of these elasticities will result in a considerable modal shift in favour of bus transport demand (19%) if the price of public transport were to be subsidized and private transport were to be priced optimally. Even without subsidy, the modal shift will be significant (18%), if the under-priced private transport modes are optimally priced keeping the current bus prices constant. Understanding of seismicity and seismotectonics of Delhi and adjoining areas is essential as these areas lie in the seismic zone IV and are geologically confined to the Delhi Fold Belt (DFB), juxtaposed to the Himalayan Frontal Thrust Fold Belt. Owing to the set-up, seismicity in this area is ascribed to the Himalayan Thrust System and activation of DFB Fault Systems. Considerably improved instrumental seismic monitoring in this area and data analysis had resolved three regions of pronounced seismicity that lie close to Sonepat, Rohtak and western part of the NCT Delhi, attributed to activation of various portions of the fault systems of the DFB. Based on seismic telemetry network data, the seismicity pattern analysis revealed that the Mahendragarh Dehradun Sub-Surface Fault (MDSSF) and Delhi Sargodha Ridge (DSR) are the two major zones of structural importance for the nucleation of seismicity in this region. These revelations were corroborated with the fault plane solution of the earthquakes. The dominant mechanism in nucleation of seismicity in DFB is the thrust with minor strike slip. general neural network based methodology that has the potential to replace the computationally-intensive site-specific seismic analysis of structures is proposed in this paper. The basic framework of the methodology consists of a feed forward back propagation neural network algorithm with one hidden layer to represent the seismic potential of a region and soil amplification effects. The methodology is implemented and verified with parameters corresponding to Delhi city in India. For this purpose, strong ground motions are generated at bedrock level for a chosen site in Delhi due to earthquakes considered to originate from the central seismic gap of the Himalayan belt using necessary geological as well as geotechnical data. Surface level ground motions and corresponding site-specific response spectra are obtained by using a one-dimensional equivalent linear wave propagation model. Spectral acceleration values are considered as a target parameter to verify the performance of the methodology. Numerical studies carried out to validate the proposed methodology show that the errors in predicted spectral acceleration values are within acceptable limits for design purposes. The methodology is general in the sense that it can be applied to other seismically vulnerable regions and also can be updated by including more parameters depending on the state-of-the-art in the subject. This paper describes the process of urbanization and land use change in the urban ecosystems of the National Capital Region (NCR) of Delhi, India. Two types of land use change are considered--from natural to urban and from agricultural to urban. Both types are explained in terms of economic variables known to be drivers of change. A panel data method was used, and economic variables were combined with GIS-based information on land use change during 1986-2004 for 11 administrative units of the NCR. The results suggest that investment in the construction sector plays a major role in converting the land from natural to urban areas, while differences in land productivity seems to be the major driver for change from agricultural to urban uses. The present paper is an attempt to examine the trend in the level of environmental pollution in Delhi and measures taken to control it. The data have been analyzed from various secondary sources of data. The analysis reveals that rapid population growth continues to be a matter of concern as it has manifold effects, one of the most important being environmental pollution. Densely populated and rapidly growing Delhi mega city is often entombed in a pall of pollution from vehicles, sewage and liquid wastes generated by human settlement and uncontrolled pollution from industries.
