Background: Unmet need for family planning is a major cause of unwanted pregnancies, which may contribute to the death of mothers and children. The aim of this study is to examine inequalities in the demand and unmet need for contraception among women in four regions (i.e., Afar, Benishangul-Gumzu, Gambela and Somali regions) of Ethiopia. Methods: The study utilized data from the 2016 Ethiopian Demographic Health Survey (EDHS), collected from 3,343 women of reproductive age 15–49 years situated in these study regions. Multilevel binary and multivariable logistic regression analysis, concentration index, and multivariate decomposition analysis were employed. Results: The study revealed that women's employment status, education level, household wealth index, total number of children ever born, and husband's working status had a statistically significant association with the demand for contraception. Furthermore, women's educational level, household size, wealth index and husband's working status had statistically significant association with unmet need for contraception. The results of the concentration index indicated that illiteracy among respondents (56%), being in the richest economic status/ wealth index (41%) and non-working status of respondents (21%) contributed substantially to the inequality in the demand for contraception use. Illiteracy of the husband (197%) and the household size less than or equal to five (184%) contributed positively, but illiteracy of respondent (-249%) and unemployment status of respondents (-119%) contributed negatively to the existing inequality in unmet need for contraception. Conclusion: The findings of this study highlight the presence of unacceptably high inequality in the demand and unmet need for contraception among women in the four study regions. Policymakers should give due attention to reducing existing socio-economic inequality to address the high unmet need for family planning and increase demand for contraception in these regions. Background: Almost half of all women in the US experience intimate partner violence (IPV) in their lifetime. The US Preventive Services Task Force recommends IPV screening paired with intervention for women of reproductive age. We aim to understand clinical practices and policies that are beneficial, detrimental, or insufficient to support survivors of IPV in a safety-net healthcare system. Methods: We sampled 45 women who were 18–64 years old, had experienced IPV within the prior year and were patients in the San Francisco Health Network. We conducted in-depth, semi-structured interviews to elicit their perspectives on disclosing IPV and obtaining support within the healthcare system. We analyzed our data using thematic analysis and grounded theory practices informed by ecological systems theory. Findings: We identified four themes regarding factors that impeded or facilitated discussing and addressing IPV across interpersonal and systemic levels relating to relationship-building, respect, autonomy and resources. (1) Interpersonal barriers included insufficient attention to relationship-building, lack of respect or concern for survivor circumstances, and feeling pressured to disclose IPV or to comply with clinicians' recommended interventions. (2) Interpersonal facilitators consisted of patient-centered IPV inquiry, attentive listening, strength-based counseling and transparency regarding confidentiality. (3) Systemic barriers such as visit time limitations, clinician turn-over and feared loss of autonomy from involvement of governmental systems leading to separation from children or harm to partners, negatively affected interpersonal dynamics. (4) Systemic facilitators involved provision of resources through IPV universal education, on-site access to IPV services, and community partnerships. Conclusions: Women experiencing IPV in our study reported that relationship-building, respect, autonomy, and IPV-related resources were essential components to providing support, promoting safety, and enabling healing in the healthcare setting. Background: Maternal-foetal transmission of Chagas disease (CD) affects newborns worldwide. Although Benznidazole and Nifurtimox therapies are the standard treatments, their use during pregnancy is contra-indicated. The effectiveness of trypanocidal medications in preventing congenital Chagas Disease (cCD) in the offsprings of women diagnosed with CD was highly suggested by other studies. Methods: We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis of studies evaluating the effectiveness of treatment for CD in women of childbearing age and reporting frequencies of cCD in their children. PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, and LILACS databases were systematically searched. Statistical analysis was performed using Rstudio 4.2 using DerSimonian and Laird random-effects models. Heterogeneity was examined with the Cochran Q test and I2 statistics. A p-value of <0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: Six studies were included, comprising 744 children, of whom 286 (38.4%) were born from women previously treated with Benznidazole or Nifurtimox, trypanocidal agents. The primary outcome of the proportion of children who were seropositive for cCD, confirmed by serology, was signigicantly lower among women who were previously treated with no congenital transmission registered (OR 0.05; 95% Cl 0.01–0.27; p = 0.000432; I2 = 0%). In women previously treated with trypanocidal drugs, the pooled prevalence of cCD was 0.0% (95% Cl 0–0.91%; I2 = 0%), our meta-analysis confirms the excellent effectiveness of this treatment. The prevalence of adverse events in women previously treated with antitrypanocidal therapies was 14.01% (95% CI 1.87–26.14%; I2 = 80%), Benznidazole had a higher incidence of side effects than Nifurtimox (76% vs 24%). Conclusion: The use of trypanocidal therapy in women at reproductive age with CD is an effective strategy for the prevention of cCD, with a complete elimination of congenital transmission of Trypanosoma cruzi in treated vs untreated infected women. Congenital transmission is currently the main mode of transmission of T. cruzi in both endemic and non-endemic countries. Most women of gestational age in endemic countries are chronically infected, having acquired the infection during infancy. Vertical transmission happens in 5% of them, and thus approximately 9,000 newborns infected with CD in Latin America are born annually. The available data on preventive treatments for pregnant women and the rate of congenital transmission is still limited with existing epidemiological information predominantly based on estimations. Therefore, our meta-analysis confirms the evidence for the use of trypanocidal agents in infected women of reproductive age to prevent congenital Trypanosoma cruzi (Tc) infection. Endometriosis and provoked vestibulodynia (PVD) are prevalent pain conditions among women of reproductive age, significantly impacting their quality of life and psychological well-being. However, comprehensive evidence regarding the lifelong health and socioeconomic outcomes for these individuals remains scarce. Additionally, many prior studies rely on limited and sometimes unrepresentative samples. This study aims to inform on the long-term consequences of these disorders by examining health, fertility, and employment outcomes in a cohort of women diagnosed with endometriosis and/or PVD, tracing their experiences from childhood to their 40s. Leveraging nationwide administrative data from Sweden and employing a matched case-control design, we investigate both similarities and differences between women with these diagnoses and those without. Our findings indicate that women diagnosed with endometriosis and/or PVD demonstrate elevated healthcare utilization patterns, commencing in their early teenage years and progressively increasing over time. Notably, disparities in labor market outcomes emerge in their 20s, showcasing lower labor earnings and a rise in sickness benefit receipt. Moreover, our results show a higher likelihood among these women to experience mental health disorders and concurrent chronic pain diseases, as well as infertility. While the association between endometriosis and infertility is well-documented, this study offers novel insights into a potential similar link between PVD and infertility. Our study informs healthcare professionals and policymakers about the considerable burden of compromised health, adverse psychosocial well-being, and reduced productivity in the labor market faced by young women with these common pain conditions. Background: Despite global, regional, and national efforts to address intimate partner violence (IPV), physical IPV persists as a significant challenge in Kenya. This study employs geospatial analysis to examine the spatial distribution and determinants of physical intimate partner violence among women, aiming to inform targeted interventions and policies. Methods: The study used a secondary analysis of a cross-sectional study design based on the 2022 Kenya demographic and health survey. Analyses were conducted using Stata version 17.0 and ArcMap version 10.8. Spatial autocorrelation and hotspot assessment were conducted in the geospatial analysis, while a multilevel logistic regression model was used to examine determinants of physical violence among reproductive-aged women. Results: The study found 28.8% (10,477) of the surveyed women reported experiencing physical intimate partner violence. The spatial analysis identified significant clusters in the southwest and central regions, with women in sub-counties like Chepaluugu, Konion, Sotik, Bumula, and Metayos among others experiencing more violence. Conversely, women in areas in the North East and South East corners such as Kisauni, Tarabaj, Waijir North, Lafey, and Mandera North and South among others showed little or no physical intimate partner violence. Multivariable logistic regression identified age, education, wealth index, partner domineering indicators, and justification of wife beating to be associated with physical intimate partner violence. Higher education and wealth were associated with lower violence odds, while partner domineering indicators and justification of wife beating increased odds. Conclusion: Spatial variations in intimate partner violence risk for women in Kenya underscore the need for targeted government interventions. Focusing on hotspot regions, especially among women with the poorest wealth index, no formal education, and older age, is crucial. Implementing behavior change campaigns addressing violence justification and partner dominance is vital. Introduction: Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a major public health issue in Nepal. IPV has social and economic impacts on women, family, and the wider society. In this study, we aimed to determine factors associated with IPV among currently partnered women aged 15–49. Methods: We conducted a secondary data analysis of the Nepal Demographic and Health Survey (NDHS) 2022. The study examines the lifetime prevalence of IPV. IPV was measured in three domains: experience of physical violence, emotional violence, and sexual violence. Weighted univariate and multivariable logistic regression analysis were applied to determine factors associated with IPV. The results of logistic regression were presented as crude odds ratio (COR) and adjusted odds ratio (AOR) and their 95% confidence interval (CI). Results: Of 3853 women, 27.2% had experienced any form of IPV. The lifetime prevalence of physical violence, emotional violence, and sexual violence were 23.2%, 12.8%, and 7.1%, respectively. Higher odds of physical violence were reported among women aged 35–49 years (AOR: 2.13, 95% CI: 1.58–2.87), women without formal education (AOR: 1.51, 95% CI: 1.10–2.06), and women who justified wife-beating (AOR: 1.23, 95% CI: 1.00–1.52). Women from poor households (AOR: 1.61, 95% CI: 1.12–2.35) and women with uneducated partners (AOR: 1.66, 95% CI: 1.08–2.58) were at higher risk of experiencing sexual violence. Women with unemployed husbands reported a higher risk of physical violence (AOR: 2.72, 95% CI: 1.45–5.06) and emotional violence (AOR: 1.61, 95% CI: 1.12–2.35). Conclusion: Almost one in three currently partnered women experienced some form of IPV in their lifetime. Various sociodemographic, partner-related, and women's empowerment-related factors were associated with experiencing IPV. Weight loss can positively alter female physiology; however, whether dietary carbohydrate- or fat- restriction confer unique effects is less studied. Precisely designed, hypocaloric well-formulated ketogenic diets (KD; ~75% energy for weight maintenance) were compared to isocaloric/isonitrogenous low-fat diet (LFD) on self-reported menses in pre-menopausal overweight and obese women (mean ± SD: 34 ± 10 years, BMI: 32.3 ± 2.7 kg/m2). Women received a precisely-weighed and formulated KD with either twice-daily with ketone salts (KS; n = 6) or a flavor-matched placebo (PL; n = 7) daily for six-weeks. An age and BMI-matched cohort (n = 6) was later assigned to the LFD and underwent the same testing procedures as the KD. Self-reported menses fluctuations were assessed bi-weekly along with measures of body weight, body composition, and fasting serum clinical chemistries using repeated measures ANOVA with Bonferroni post-hoc corrections. Both diets elicited clinically-significant weight-loss (Δ: -7.0 ± 0.5 kg; p < 0.001), primarily from fat-mass (Δ: -4.6 ± 0.3 kg; p < 0.001), and improved insulin-sensitivity and serum lipids (all p < 0.05). Fasting plasma glucose and inflammatory markers were not different between diets. Fasting capillary beta-hydroxybutyrate (R-βHB) increased significantly during the KD, independent of supplementation (Δ: 1.2 ± 0.3 mM R-βHB; p < 0.001). Women randomized to the KD+KS (30%) and KD+PL (43%) reported subjective increases in menses frequency and intensity after 14 days, whereas another third reported a regain of menses (>1 year since the last period) after 28 days. No LFD participants reported menses changes. Nutrient-dense, whole-food KDs and LFD improved weight, BMI, body composition, and blood parameters in pre-menopausal women after six-weeks. Changes in self-reported menses were described by most of the KD participants, but none of the LFD women suggesting there may be unique effects of nutritional ketosis, independent of weight loss. Background: The diagnosis of Female Genital Schistosomiasis (FGS) which is a clinical feature of urogenital schistosomiasis caused by Schistosoma haematobium is challenging, especially in primary healthcare facilities characterized by low resources which are dependent by the majority of the FGS endemic communities. To facilitate and improve diagnosis in these settings, a simple risk factors and symptoms tool has been developed to help healthcare workers at primary healthcare facilities identify and manage FGS cases. However, the sensitivity and specificity of the tool are not known. Therefore, the objective of this study was to assess the performance of risk factors and symptoms tools in diagnosing FGS in adolescent girls and women of reproductive age in selected villages of north-western Tanzania. Methods: A community-based analytical cross-sectional study was conducted among 347 women aged 18–49 years in Maswa District, north-western Tanzania. A single urine sample was collected from each participant and screened for S. haematobium eggs using a urine filtration technique. Consenting participants (n = 177), underwent thorough speculum examination by trained gynaecologists using a digital portable colposcopy to capture images of the cervix and vagina. All the captured pictures were examined independently by two pairs (2 gynaecologists in each pair) of qualified obstetricians and gynaecologists. A descriptive analysis and logistic regression were used to demonstrate the prevalence, symptoms, and risk factors of FGS. Results: The mean age of 347 women enrolled in the study was 30 years (Standard Deviation (SD) ±7.7) and the prevalence of women with symptoms suggestive of FGS was 15.8% (95% CI; 10.8%- 22.0) by colposcope and 87% (95% CI; 83.0%-90.4%) using the risk factor and symptom checklist. The overall sensitivity, specificity, positive and negative predictive value of symptoms and risk factors checklist tool for diagnosing FGS schistosomiasis (≥7 score points) using colposcope as a reference test were 85.7% (95%CI; 80.6%- 90.9%), 8.7% (95%CI; 4.6%-12.9%), 15.0% (95%CI; 9.7%-20.3%) and 76.5% (95%CI; 70.2%-82.7%). Multivariate analysis showed that female genital schistosomiasis using a risk factor and symptom checklist was associated with fetching water in contaminated fresh water (aOR:21.8, 95%CI;2.8–171.2, P <0.003), self-reported pelvic pain (aOR:5.3, 95%CI; 1.1–25.9, P< 0.04) and having any urinary symptoms (aOR:12.2, 95%CI; 1.5–96.3, P<0.018). Urine microscopy results were available for 345 participants, of these, 3.5% (12/345) (95% CI; 1.8%-6.0%) were positive for S. haematobium infection. Conclusion: Female genital schistosomiasis and urinary-related symptoms are common in the current study population. The risk factor and symptoms checklist for diagnosis of FGS achieved high sensitivity but low specificity for women who scored ≥7 points using colposcope as a reference diagnostic test. At present, the call to integrate FGS into the reproductive health services for women has received much attention, however, the diagnostic part of FGS remains a challenge, thus there is a need to continue evaluating this tool in different population and age structures in endemic areas. Author summary: Female genital schistosomiasis (FGS) is a genital manifestation of a waterborne parasitic disease caused by Schistosoma haematobium, however, it is mostly neglected. FGS diagnosis is still a challenge due to the lack of reference standards for its diagnosis. Colposcope has been used as a standard for diagnosing FGS, it shows the FGS clinical findings on the cervix and vagina. However, FGS diagnosis by colposcope has not been feasible in most rural endemic settings due to its unavailability, low level of knowledge of its use for diagnosing FGS, and low FGS knowledge among healthcare workers. Thus, there is a need to develop an alternative cheap diagnostic tool to be used in endemic areas for identifying women and adolescent girls at high risk of having FGS lesions and referring them for colposcopy examination. This call has been given more weight by the WHO in its roadmap plan for ending Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTD) by 2030. In response to this call, this study determined the sensitivity and specificity of the risk factors and symptoms checklist (variables), and the prevalence of FGS by both colposcope and risk factors and symptoms checklist using a score point of 7 as a cut-off point to suspect FGS. Furthermore, we also determined the prevalence of S. haematobium infection using a urine filtration technique and determined the symptoms and risk factors of urogenital schistosomiasis among women in selected villages of Maswa district, north-western Tanzania. The findings of this study demonstrated a high prevalence of FGS in the current study population using both methods/diagnoses. There is a need for further evaluation of the performance of the risk and symptoms questionnaire to improve its performance. Background: To identify childhood cancer survivors (CCSs) at risk of premature ovarian insufficiency (POI) and impaired fertility is important given its impact on quality of life. The aim of this study was to assess ovarian markers and fertility outcomes in adult female CCSs. We used the Swedish and the PanCareLIFE classifications for infertility risk grouping. Methods: 167 CCSs, at median age 34.6 years (19.3–57.8) with a median follow-up time of 25.4 years (11.6–41.3), and 164 healthy matched controls were included in this cross-sectional study. We assessed anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) levels, antral follicle count (AFC), ovarian volume (OV), and fertility outcomes. Based on gonadotoxic treatments given, CCSs were categorized into infertility risk groups. Results: The median levels of AMH, AFC and OV were lower in CCSs (1.9 vs. 2.1 ng/ml, 12.0 vs. 13.0, 6.8 vs. 8.0 cm3) compared with controls, although statistically significant only for OV (p = 0.021). AMH levels in CCSs <40 years were lower for those classified as high-risk (p = 0.034) and very high-risk (p<0.001) for infertility, based on the Swedish risk classification. Similarly, AFC was reduced in the high-risk (p<0.001) and the very high-risk groups (p = 0.003). CCSs of all ages showed a trend towards impaired fertility, especially in the very high-risk group. POI was diagnosed in 22/167 CCSs, of whom 14 were in the high- and very high-risk groups. The results according to the PanCareLIFE classification were similar. Conclusion: Both the Swedish and the PanCareLIFE infertility risk classifications are reliable tools for identifying those at risk of reduced ovarian markers and fertility, as well as POI. We recommend fertility preservation counselling for patients receiving highly gonadotoxic treatments (i.e., Cyclophosphamide Equivalent Dose ≥6 g/m2, radiotherapy exposure to ovaries or stem cell transplantation) with follow-up at a young reproductive age due to the risk of a shortened reproductive window. Objective: To assess the feasibility of integrating a pregnancy intention assessment screening algorithm into the electronic medical record (EMR) at a multispecialty clinic focused on the health of women and people assigned female at birth (AFAB). Study design: This pilot quality improvement project implemented a series of clinician reminders, new data fields in the patient record, and templated clinical notes to prompt care providers across specialties to ask AFAB reproductive age individuals about their desire for future pregnancies. Investigators created a novel screening question based on prior literature and expert input. Prospective observational study of one year of during-intervention EMR data on screening uptake and documentation, contraceptive use, and referrals to obstetrics and gynecology (OBGYN) for preconception care, contraceptive care, and related services. Results: SUPPORT launched in February 2020 and was paused for 6 months due to the COVID-19 pandemic. During the intervention period through July 2021, 18% of patients for whom the automated screening reminder was activated had a documented pregnancy intention. Patients were screened in OBGYN, internal medicine, and eight subspecialty medical clinics. Among those screened, individuals who reported they did not desire pregnancy in the next year were more likely to use contraception (aOR 1.8, 95% CI 1.1, 3.1). Individuals that did desire pregnancy in the next year were more likely to be subsequently referred to OBGYN (aOR 2.7, 95% CI 1.2, 6.0). Conclusions: Despite the competing demands of the COVID-19 pandemic, the SUPPORT intervention was utilized at higher rates than prior similar interventions and across multiple disease specialties. Implications: Results from the SUPPORT pilot suggest that pregnancy intention screening of reproductive age AFAB individuals with an EMR-based screening prompt is feasible at scale. Background: Overweight/obesity has become global health concern with increasing prevalence. This study examined district-level disparities and spatial clustering of overweight/obesity among women of reproductive age (WRA) in India using the latest National Family Health Survey-5 (2019–2021) data. Method: Information of 623,656 women aged 15 to 49 from the NFHS-5 (2019–2021) were analysed in this study. The outcome variable was BMI as classified by the world health organisation (WHO). Utilising Global Moran's I, Anselin's Local Moran's I, and spatial regression models spatial clustering and associated factors were analysed. Result: The study found that 24% (95% CI: 23.8–24.3) of WRA in India were overweight/obese in 2019–21. The prevalence was greatest in Punjab (41%) and lowest in Meghalaya (11%). Additionally, the Global Moran's I value for the outcome variable was 0.73, indicating a positive spatial autocorrelation in the overweight/obesity. Districts of Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, Telangana, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, Haryana, and Delhi were hotspots of overweight/obesity. Several factors of overweight/obesity among WRA were identified, including place of residence (β: 0.034, p: 0.011), parity (β: 0.322, p: 0.002), social group (β: -0.031, p: 0.016), religion (β: -0.044, p: <0.001), household wealth status (β: 0.184, p: <0.001), mass-media exposure (β: 0.056, p: 0.031), and diabetes (β: 0.680, p: <0.001). Conclusion: The study emphasizes the importance of targeted interventions and region-specific strategies, while also stressing the need to address associated factors to develop effective public health initiatives aimed at reducing overweight/obesity prevalence among WRA in India. Background: Over the past decade, nationally representative research elucidating the association between depression and infertility has been notably lacking. Our study aimed to investigate the association between depression and infertility among women of childbearing age. Methods: Our study encompassed 3,654 women aged 18 to 45 years from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2013–2018. Infertility was defined as a positive response to the query: "Have you attempted to conceive for a minimum of one year without achieving pregnancy?" Depression was evaluated by the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9) score (range, 0–27). Multiple logistic regression analyses and subgroup analyses stratified by age and race/ethnicity were conducted to investigate the association between depression and infertility. Furthermore, fitted smoothing curves and threshold effect analysis were utilized to depict the nonlinear relationship. Results: Total PHQ-9 score was associated with infertility in the fully adjusted model (OR 1.04, 95% CI 1.01–1.07, P = 0.010), and this relationship exhibited a non-linear pattern, reaching a saturation point at 13, as substantiated by the fitting of smoothed curves. Additionally, the association remained robust when stratified by age but not by race/ethnicity. Limitations: Cross-sectional design and recall biases. Conclusions: In this cross-sectional study, depression was associated with infertility among women of childbearing age in the fully adjusted models. Introduction: Modern contraceptive methods are a scientifically effective method to control the fertility of reproductive-aged groups of people. The women's use of contraceptive methods creates a birth gap and limits the number of their children. The main objective of this study is to identify the significant determinant of modern contraceptive use of reproductive-aged women in Ethiopia. Methods: We used data from 2019 Ethiopian Mini Demographic and Health Survey. This data was multi-level, taking into account factors at the individual and community levels. In order to capture the multi-level structure of this data and make more reliable and broadly applicable conclusions about the variables influencing the use of modern contraceptives at the individual and community levels, we employed a two-level mixed-effects logistic regression model. In addition, we used cross-tabulation analysis to know the percentage of modern contraception users (reproductive-aged women) across their socio-economic, demographic, and health characteristics. A total of 8196 reproductive aged (15–49) women were included in this study. Results: From a total of 8196 reproductive-aged women, 2495(30.4%) were using modern contraceptive method and the rest 5701(69.6%) did not use any modern contraceptive methods. Among 2495 contraceptive users, 1657 (67.3%) used injections and 533 (21.7%) used implants/Norplant. At a 5% level of significance, the result from the two-level binary logistic regression model revealed that the predictors; Age of women, education level, religion, wealth index, knowledge of modern contraception method, number of died children, number of living children, family size, total children ever born and contextual region have significant effect on the use of modern contraception method. Conclusion: Reproductive-aged women in Ethiopia with more living children, residing in urban/agrarian region, younger, wealthier, married, and more educated, were more likely to be modern contraceptive users. The concerned bodies in Ethiopia should bring forward the intervention strategy and should expand the existed programs to improve the use of modern contraception methods among reproductive-aged women in Ethiopia. Background: Uterine fibroids are the most common pelvic benign tumours found in reproductive-aged women and may affect up to 70% of all women by menopause. Uterine fibroids place a heavy burden on women and society resulting in poor quality of life, impaired self-image, and impaired social, sexual, emotional, and physical well-being of affected individuals. Aim: This study aims to map the evidence on the burden of uterine fibroids in Sub-Saharan Africa; uterine fibroids' burden by age, uterine fibroids' geographic burden, uterine fibroids' cost estimation and reported experiences among women diagnosed with uterine fibroids. Setting: Articles will be selected from countries within Sub-Saharan Africa Methods and analysis: This scoping review will be guided by the Arksey & O'Malley framework, enhanced by Levac et al (2010). The following electronic databases will be searched; PubMed, EBSCOhost (Cumulated Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature and Health Source), Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System Online, Cochrane Library, Scopus, Web of Science, Africa Journal Online, and Google Scholar. The Population Concept and Context (PCC) framework will be used and the PRISMA flow diagram will also be used to show the literature search and selection of studies. Descriptive data analysis will be used; results will be presented in themes, narrative summaries, tables, and charts. Discussion: The study anticipates finding relevant literature on the distribution of uterine fibroids, the burden of uterine fibroids in terms of geographic distribution, age distribution, and cost approximation related to the disease. Introduction: Preterm birth is the leading cause of both infant and neonatal mortality. It also had long-term consequences for the physical and neurological development of a growing child. The majority of these and related problems occur in low- and middle-income countries, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa, due to resource scarcity to sustain the lives of premature babies. Despite this, there is a paucity of recent information on the pooled prevalence and factors associated with preterm birth in sub-Saharan Africa. Therefore, this study aimed to update the pooled prevalence and determinants of preterm birth in sub-Saharan Africa based on the most recent Demographic and Health Survey data. Methods: A cross-sectional study design using the most recent demographic and health survey data from eight sub-Saharan African countries was used. We included a total weighted sample of 74,871 reproductive-aged women who gave birth in the five years preceding the survey. We used a multilevel logistic regression model to identify associated factors of preterm birth in sub-Saharan Africa. The adjusted odds ratio at 95% Cl was computed to assess the strength and significance of the association between explanatory and outcome variables. Factors with a p-value of <0.05 are declared statistically significant. Results: In this study, the pooled prevalence of preterm birth among reproductive-aged women in eight sub-Saharan African countries was 3.11% (95% CI: 2.98–3.25). Working mothers (AOR = 0.61; 95% CI: 0.38–0.97), being married (AOR = 0.63; 95% CI: 0.40–0.99), and having media exposure (AOR = 0.59; 95% CI: 0.36–0.96) decrease the odds of preterm birth. On the other hand, being low birth weight (AOR = 17.7; 95% CI: 10.7–29.3), having multiple pregnancies (AOR = 3.43; 95% CI: 1.82–6.45), having a history of terminated pregnancies (AOR = 1.56; 95% CI: 1.01–2.41), being un-educated (AOR = 3.16; 95% CI: 1.12–8.93), being of a maternal age above 35 (AOR = 1.63; 95% CI: 1.08–2.45), maternal alcohol use (AOR = 19.18; 95% CI: 13.6–38.8), and being in the low socio-economic status (AOR = 1.85; 95% CI: 1.11–3.07) of the community increase the odds of preterm birth. Conclusion: The burden of preterm birth among reproductive-age women in sub-Saharan Africa showed improvements as compared to previous findings. To further lessen the burden, policymakers and other pertinent organizations must prioritize maternal health, expand media access, educate and empower women, and promote a healthy lifestyle for reproductive-age women. Introduction: Double burden of malnutrition (DBM) has been recognized by the World Health Organisation (WHO) as an emerging Global Syndemic characterized by the simultaneous occurrence of both undernutrition and overnutrition. Women of the reproductive age group (15 to 49 years) are disproportionately affected by DBM and are at high risk of continuing the intergenerational cycle of malnutrition. This study aims to assess the changing trends and determinants of DBM among women of the reproductive age group in India. Materials and methods: We used data from three rounds of National Family Health Surveys (NFHS-3,4,5) conducted in years 2005–06, 2015–16, and 2019–2021. Descriptive statistics and Poisson regression analysis were done using weights with log link function. Results: The prevalence of anaemia, underweight and overweight/obesity was 57.2%, 18.6% and 24% respectively. The combined burden of underweight and anaemia has declined by 46% (21.6% to 11.7%), whereas the combined burden of overweight/obesity and anaemia has increased by 130% (5.4% to 12.4%) in the past 15 years. The prevalence of DBM, which includes both underweight and overweight/obesity with anaemia was 24.1% in 2021, a decline of 11% in 15 years. Women who were younger, rural, less educated, poor and middle class, and women living in the eastern, western and southern regions of India had higher risk for being underweight with anaemia and lower risk for developing overweight/obesity with anaemia. Conclusion: The significant decrease in underweight yet enormous increase in overweight/obesity over the past 15 years with the persistence of anaemia in both ends of the nutritional spectrum is characteristic of the new nutritional reality emphasizing the need to address malnutrition in all its forms. It is critical to consider geography and a population specific, double-duty targeted intervention to holistically address the risk factors associated with DBM and accomplish India's commitment to the global agenda of Sustainable Development Goals-2030. Introduction: Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) have been promoted globally, yet sexual and reproductive health (SRH) interventions are seldom evaluated from the perspective of service users and service providers. Very little is known about whether and why various target groups including general women are (or are not) practicing SRH -related self-care practices. This study explored SRH self-care practices and facilitators and barriers to the adoption of SRH self-care among reproductive-age women of Nepal. Methods: In this descriptive qualitative study, we conducted in-depth interviews in June 2022 with ten married women of reproductive age (service users) and four SRHR service providers (program managers and health service providers) in Nepal. Thematic analysis was conducted for data analysis. Results: We found that commonly practiced self-care practices were self-administration of contraceptives, self-management of pain, self-monitoring of pregnancy, self-awareness and seeking medical abortions (tele-abortion), self-medication for pre-exposure prophylaxis for HIV, and self-testing for HIV and pregnancy. The multi-level barriers to SRH self-care were poor knowledge and perceived lack of need for SRH self-care, limited access, and negative behaviors from the service providers. The program-related barriers included lack of evidence, limited financial resources, lack of accountability, and limited knowledge and skills among service providers on SRH self-care measures. Peer support, an increasing number of service sites, and access to and use of digital (health) tools emerged as the facilitators of SRH self-care. Conclusions: The findings of this study suggest that addressing barriers such as poor knowledge, limited access, and negative attitudes while leveraging facilitators such as peer support and digital tools is essential for promoting and enabling effective SRH self-care among women. Purpose: The resurgence of pertussis has occurred around the world. However, the epidemiological profiles of pertussis cannot be well understood by current diseases surveillance. This study was designed to understand the seroepidemiological characteristics of pertussis infection in the general population of Huzhou City, evaluate the prevalence infection of pertussis in the population, and offer insights to inform adjustments in pertussis prevention and control strategies. Methods: From September to October 2023, a cross-sectional serosurvey was conducted in Huzhou City, involving 1015 permanent residents. Serum samples were collected from the study subjects, and pertussis toxin IgG antibodies (Anti-PT-IgG) were quantitatively measured using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). The analysis included the geometric mean concentration (GMC) of Anti-PT-IgG, rates of GMC≥40IU/mL, ≥100IU/mL, and <5IU/mL. Stratified comparisons were made based on age, vaccination history, and human categories. Results: Among the 1015 surveyed individuals, the geometric mean concentration (GMC) of Anti-PT-IgG was 10.52 (95% CI: 9.96–11.11) IU/mL, with a recent infection rate of 1.58%, a serum positivity rate of 11.43%, and a proportion with <5IU/mL of 40.49%. Among 357 children with clear vaccination history, susceptibility decreased with an increasing number of vaccine doses (Z = -6.793, P < 0.001). The concentration of Anti-PT-IgG exhibited a significant post-vaccination decline over time (Z = -5.143, P < 0.001). In women of childbearing age, the GMC of Anti-PT-IgG was 7.71 (95% CI: 6.90–8.62) IU/mL, with no significant difference in susceptibility among different age groups (χ2 = 0.545, P = 0.909). The annual pertussis infection rate in individuals aged ≥3 years was 9321 (95%CI: 3336–16039) per 100,000, with peak infection rates in the 20–29, 40–49, and 5–9 age groups at 34363 (95%CI: 6327–66918) per 100,000, 22307.72 (95%CI: 1380–47442) per 100,000, and 18020(95%CI: 1093–37266) per 100,000, respectively. Conclusions: In 2023, the actual pertussis infection rate in the population of Huzhou City was relatively high. Vaccine-induced antibodies exhibit a rapid decay, and the estimated serum infection rate increases rapidly from post-school age, peaking in the 20–29 age group. Introduction: Micronutrient deficiencies are prevalent in West Africa, particularly among women of reproductive age (WRA) and young children. Bouillon is a promising food fortification vehicle due to its widespread consumption. This study aims to evaluate the impact of multiple micronutrient-fortified bouillon cubes, compared to control bouillon cubes (fortified with iodine only), on micronutrient status and hemoglobin concentrations among lactating and non-lactating WRA and young children in northern Ghana. Methods: This randomized, controlled doubly-masked trial will be conducted in the Kumbungu and Tolon districts in the Northern Region of Ghana, where prior data indicate multiple micronutrient deficiencies are common. Participants will be: 1) non-pregnant non-lactating WRA (15–49 y), 2) children 2–5 y, and 3) non-pregnant lactating women 4–18 months postpartum. Eligible participants will be randomly assigned to receive household rations of one of two types of bouillon cubes: 1) a multiple micronutrient-fortified bouillon cube containing vitamin A, folic acid, vitamin B12, iron, zinc, and iodine, or 2) a control cube containing iodine only. Each participant's household will receive a ration of bouillon cubes every 2 weeks, and households will be advised to prepare meals as usual, using the study-provided cubes. The trial duration will be 9 months for non-pregnant non-lactating WRA and children, and 3 months for lactating women. The primary outcomes will be changes in biomarkers of micronutrient status and hemoglobin among WRA and children and milk micronutrient concentrations among lactating women. Secondary outcomes will include change in prevalence of micronutrient deficiency and anemia; dietary intake of bouillon and micronutrients; inflammation, malaria, and morbidity symptoms; and child growth and development. Discussion: Evidence from this study will inform discussions about bouillon fortification in Ghana and West Africa. This study tested the usability of a home-based self-administration transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) device designed specifically for women's health needs. This is a single center triple blinded clinical usability study for a new wireless, Bluetooth-controlled wearable tDCS device for women's health. The study aims to evaluate the usability and effective blinding of a home-based tDCS system. A total of forty-nine women of reproductive age were randomly allocated (1:1) to receive one session of active tDCS (n = 24) or sham tDCS (n = 25) over the motor and dorsolateral prefrontal cortex. Each participant self-administered one 20-minute session without supervision following guidance on a software application alone. The System Usability Scale (SUS) and the Patient Global Impression of Change (PGIC) were used to evaluate the usability of the system. Regardless of sham or active conditions, all users found the system easy to use without the support of researchers. Usability scores were considered to be "excellent" in both groups and no significant difference was found between sham and active groups showing effective blinding of the device (Active group: 93.7 (83.1–97.5); Sham group 90 (86.2–95) p = 0.79) and PGIC (Active group: 2 (1–2.75); Sham group 2 (1–2) p = 0.99) using an unpaired t-test or non-parametric statistical tests accordingly. The new Bluetooth-controlled wearable tDCS device is easy, safe to use and completely controlled by a smartphone app. This device is focused on women's health and will be tested as an alternative treatment for chronic pelvic pain and mood disturbance associated with menstrual cycles in further research. Background: Miscarriage is a major public health concern in low and middle-income countries (LMICs) like Nepal. This study aims to examine the factors associated with miscarriage among pregnant women of reproductive age (15–49 years) in the past 15 years. Methods: There were a total of weighted sample of 26,376 cross-sectional pregnancy data from Nepal Demographic and Health Surveys (NDHS) 2001, 2006, 2011, and 2016 combined together, which was used in the study. Multilevel logistic regression analysis that adjusted for cluster and survey weights was used to identify factors associated with miscarriage among pregnant women of reproductive age in Nepal. Results: The results showed that maternal age, contraception, tobacco smoking, wealth index, respondents' educational status, and, caste/ethnicity were found to be strong factors of miscarriage in Nepal. The likelihood of having a miscarriage among older women (≥40 years) was more than 100% (aOR = 2.12, 95% CI [1.73, 2.59]), among non-users of contraception was 88.9% (aOR = 1.88, 95% CI [1.68, 2.11]) (p<005) and non-smoking women had a 19% lower odds of miscarriage (aOR = 0.81, 95% CI [0.69, 0.95]). Respondents from the richest wealth index had 50% (aOR = 1.50, 95% CI [1.22, 1.85]) higher likelihood of miscarriage. Mothers with only primary education had a 25% higher chance of miscarriage (aOR = 1.25, 95% CI [1.09, 1.44]) compared to those with secondary and higher secondary education. In relation to caste/ethnicity, Dalits had 13% lesser likelihood (aOR = 0.87, 95% CI [0.74, 1.02]) and Janajatis had 26% lower chances of a miscarriage than Brahmin/Chettri (aOR = 0.74, 95% CI [0.64, 0.85]). Conclusion: Findings from this study show that miscarriages are associated with maternal age, use of contraception, smoking, wealth index, caste, and ethnicity. Interventions aimed to improve use of contraceptives, avoiding smoking and pregnancy planning on the basis of maternal age, are needed to prevent miscarriage. Background: Anemia is a global public health problem, principally affecting young children and reproductive-age mothers. Although anemia is a main public health concern in low-income countries, there is no evidence about its prevalence and associated factors among women of reproductive age in Liberia. Thus, the purpose of this study was to identify the prevalence and associated factors of anemia among women of reproductive age in Liberia. Methods: We used the data extracted from the fifth Liberia Demographic and Health Survey (LDHS-V) that were carried out between October 2019 and February 2020. The sample was chosen using a stratified two-stage cluster sampling procedure. Overall weighted samples of 4027 women of reproductive age were used in the analysis. Data weighting was carried out to obtain reliable estimates and standard errors as well as to restore the representativeness of the data. Stata version 14 software was used for data extraction, coding, and analysis. We used multilevel analysis to identify the significant factors associated with anemia among women of reproductive age. Results: The prevalence of anemia among women of reproductive age in Liberia was 44.51 (95% CI: 42.97–46.04). From these, about 23.10% of women of reproductive age were mildly anemic, 20.63% were moderately anemic and 0.78% was severely anemic. In multivariable analysis; women with the groups of 20–24 years (adjusted odds ratio (AOR) = 0.72, 95% CI: 0.56, 0.92), 25–29 years (AOR = 0.57, 95% CI: 0.43, 0.77), 30–34 years (AOR = 0.59, 95% CI: 0.43, 0.83), 35–39 years (AOR = 0.56, 95% CI: 0.41, 0.79), 40–44 years (AOR = 0.61, 95% CI: 0.43,0.87), 45–49 years (AOR = 0.57, 95% CI: 0.39,0.82), overweight (AOR = 0.83; 95% CI: 0.70, 0.98), obese (AOR = 0.72; 95% CI: 0.58, 0.88), using modern contraceptive methods (AOR = 0.61; 95% CI: 0.52, 0.72), and being from the Northcentral region (AOR = 0.55; 95% CI: 0.43, 0.72) were significantly associated with lower odds of anemia. However, being pregnant (AOR = 1.34; 95% CI: 1.04, 1.73) and having higher parity (3 children or more) (AOR = 1.40; 95% CI: 1.03, 1.93) were significantly associated with higher odds of anemia. Conclusion: In the present study, the prevalence of anemia in women of reproductive age was relatively high. Background: Overweight/obesity is one of the major public health problems that affect both developed and developing nations. The co-occurrence of overweight/obesity and anemia is thought to be largely preventable if detected early. To date, no spatial analyses have been performed to identify areas of hotspots for the co-occurrence of overweight/obesity and anemia among reproductive women in sub-Saharan Africa. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the spatial distribution and associated factors of the co-occurrence of overweight/obesity and anemia among women of reproductive age. Methods: Data for the study were drawn from the Demographic and Health Survey, a nationally representative cross-sectional survey conducted in the era of Sustainable Development Goals, in which the World Health Assembly decided and planned to cease all forms of malnutrition by 2030. Seventeen sub-Saharan African countries and a total weighted sample of 108,161 reproductive women (15–49 years) were included in our study. The data extraction, recoding and analysis were done using STATA V.17. For the spatial analysis (autocorrelation, hot-spot and interpolation), ArcGIS version 10.7 software, and for the SaTScan analysis, SaTScan version 10.1 software was used. Descriptive statistics were presented using frequency tables and percentages. We employed multilevel logistic regression to investigate associated factors. In the multivariable analysis, variables with a p-value of ≤0.05 are considered as a significant factor associated with co-occurrence of overweight/obesity and anemia among women aged 15–49 years. Results: The overall co-occurrence of overweight/obesity and anemia among women in sub-Saharan Africa was 12% (95%CI: 9–14%). The spatial analysis revealed that the co-occurrence of overweight/obesity and anemia among women significantly varied across sub-Saharan Africa. (Global Moran's I = 0.583163, p<0.001). In the spatial window, the primary-cluster was located in Liberia, Guinea, Gambia, Sira Leon, Mauritania, Mali, Cameron and Nigeria with a Log-Likelihood Ratio (LRR) of 1687.30, and Relative Risk (RR) of 2.58 at a p-value < 0.001. In multilevel analysis, women aged 25–34 years (AOR = 1.91, 95%CI: 1.78, 2.04), women aged 35–49 years (AOR = 2.96, 95% CI: 2.76, 3.17), married (AOR = 1.36, 95% CI: 1.27, 1.46), widowed (AOR = 1.22, 95%CI: 1.06, 1.40), divorced (AOR = 1.36, 95% CI: 1.23, 1.50), media exposure (AOR = 1.31, 95%CI: 1.23, 1.39), middle income (AOR = 1.19, 95%CI: 1.11, 1.28), high income/rich (AOR = 1.36, 95%CI: 1.26, 1.46), not working (AOR = 1.13, 95% CI:1.07, 1.19), traditional contraceptive utilization (AOR = 1.39, 95%CI: 1.23, 1.58) and no contraceptive use (AOR = 1.27, 95%CI: 1.20, 1.56), and no health insurance coverage (AOR = 1.36, 95%CI: 1.25, 1.49), were individual level significant variables. From community-level variables urban residence (AOR = 1.61, 95%CI: 1.50, 1.73), lower middle-income country (AOR = 2.50, 95%CI: 2.34, 2.66) and upper middle-income country (AOR = 2.87, 95%CI: 2.47, 3.34), were significantly associated with higher odds of co-occurrence of overweight/ obesity and anemia. Conclusion and recommendations: The spatial distribution of the co-occurrence of overweight/obesity and anemia was significantly varied across the sub-Saharan African country. Both individual and community-level factors were significantly associated with the co-occurrence of overweight/obesity and anemia. Therefore, public health programmers and other stalk holders who are involved in maternal healthcare should work together and give priority to hotspot areas of co-occurrence in sub-Saharan Africa. Background: Sierra Leone has poor indicators of reproductive health and a high prevalence of unintended pregnancies. To date, no study has explored determinants of ovulatory cycle knowledge in Sierra Leone. We investigated geographic region to determine where the needs for improved ovulatory cycle knowledge are greatest in Sierra Leone. Methods: This is a cross-sectional study of women of reproductive age (n = 15,574) based on the 2019 Sierra Leone Demographic and Health Survey. Geographic region and sociodemographic covariates were included in a multivariate logistic regression model predicting the odds that participants possessed accurate knowledge of when in the ovulatory cycle pregnancy initiation is most likely. Results: In Sierra Leone, 39.8% (CI = 37.4–40.9) of 15-49-year-old women had accurate knowledge of the ovulatory cycle. Women in the Northern and Southern regions possessed the highest prevalence of correct knowledge (46.7%, CI = 43.1–50.3 and 45.1%, CI = 41.9–48.2, respectively). Women from the Northwestern (AOR = 0.29, CI = 0.22–0.38), Eastern (AOR = 0.55, CI = 0.41–0.72), and Western regions (AOR = 0.63, CI = 0.50–0.80) had significantly lower odds of accurate ovulatory cycle knowledge compared to others. Women aged 15–19, those with a primary school education, and participants with a parity of none all had the lowest odds of correct ovulatory cycle knowledge as well. Conclusion: Less than four in ten women in Sierra Leone had accurate knowledge of when in the ovulatory cycle pregnancy is most likely to occur. This suggests that family planning outreach programs should include education on the ovulatory cycle and the importance of understanding the implications of its timing. This can reduce the risk of unintended pregnancies throughout Sierra Leone, and can have an especially positive impact in the Northwestern, Eastern, and Western regions, where ovulatory cycle knowledge was significantly lower. The negative effects of alcohol use can transmit intergenerational harm if alcohol use disorder (AUD) occurs during pregnancy and/or while parenting a child. Prenatal alcohol exposure is the leading preventable cause of congenital anomalies in the USA, and heavy drinking in women has been on the rise, further accelerated by the COVID-19 pandemic. This study describes the most recent patterns in the past year AUD prevalence and treatment among reproductive-aged women, with a specific focus on pregnant and parenting women, and barriers to treatment among those affected. We analyzed data on reproductive-age women from the National Survey on Drug Use and Health (2015–2021). We used generalized linear models to estimate prevalence ratios (PR) for past 12-month AUD and its treatment based on DSM-V criteria. We considered sociodemographic characteristics, including age, race/ethnicity, income, health insurance type, and arrest history. Pregnant and parenting women displayed lower risk for AUD (PR = 0.48, 95% CI:0.41–0.57; PR = 0.5 95% CI:0.48–0.54, respectively) relative to non-pregnant/non-parenting women. Excess risk for AUD was associated with education (some college vs. college graduates, PR = 1.07, 95% CI:1.01–1.13) and history of arrests (PR = 2.93, 95% CI:2.67–3.21). There were no clear differences in AUD treatment use based on parenting or pregnancy status. Among those with AUD, the prevalence of treatment was higher among individuals aged 35–49 years compared to those 18–25 years (PR = 1.6, 95% CI: 1.19–2.14) and in those enrolled in Medicaid vs. private insurance (PR = 2.62, 95%CI:1.97–3.47). Financial barriers and treatment not being a priority were the most frequently reported barriers to treatment. To promote well-being among parents and their children, healthcare providers should prioritize reproductive-age women at higher AUD risk. Objectives: Sex steroid hormones are important not only for reproduction but also for many aspects of women's health, including the risk of breast cancer. Physical activity has been shown to influence sex hormone levels in women. This study aimed to investigate a relationship between the average daily number of steps and the sex hormone (estradiol and progesterone) levels in premenopausal women. Materials and methods: Data were collected from 85 healthy, urban women of reproductive age who performed at least 180 minutes/week of moderate physical activity for two complete menstrual cycles. Physical activity was measured using wrist bands. Estradiol and progesterone concentrations were measured in daily-collected saliva samples in the second menstrual cycle. Results: There was a significant negative association between the average number of steps taken daily and salivary progesterone levels after adjusting for potential confounding factors (age, BMI). Women who took more than 10,000 steps a day had significantly lower progesterone levels compared to women who took less than 10,000 steps. The association between physical activity and estradiol levels was statistically insignificant. Discussion: Our results indicate that taking at least 10,000 steps a day reduces progesterone levels, but this intensity of physical activity may not be high enough to affect estradiol levels. Daily step tracking is a valuable element of health promotion, but currently recommended levels of physical activity may not be high enough for healthy premenopausal women to significantly reduce both sex hormone levels and thus their risk of postmenopausal breast cancer. Introduction: The challenge of achieving maternal and neonatal health-related goals in developing countries is significantly impacted by high fertility rates, which are partly attributed to limited access to family planning and access to the healthcare systems. The most widely used indicator to monitor family planning coverage is the proportion of women in reproductive age using contraception (CPR). However, this metric does not accurately reflect the true family planning coverage, as it fails to account for the diverse needs of women in reproductive age. Not all women in this category require contraception, including those who are pregnant, wish to become pregnant, sexually inactive, or infertile. To effectively address the contraceptive needs of those who require it, this study aims to estimate family planning coverage among this specific group. Further, we aimed to explore the geographical variation and factors influencing contraceptive uptake of contraceptive use among those who need. Method: We used data from the Performance Monitoring for Action Ethiopia (PMA Ethiopia) survey of women of reproductive age and the service delivery point (SDP) survey conducted in 2019. A total of 4,390 women who need contraception were considered as the analytical sample. To account for the study design, sampling weights were considered to compute the coverage of modern contraceptive use disaggregated by socio-demographic factors. Bayesian geostatistical modeling was employed to identify potential factors associated with the uptake of modern contraception and produce spatial prediction to unsampled locations. Result: The overall weighted prevalence of modern contraception use among women who need it was 44.2% (with 95% CI: 42.4%—45.9%). Across regions of Ethiopia, contraceptive use coverage varies from nearly 0% in Somali region to 52.3% in Addis Ababa. The average nearest distance from a woman's home to the nearest SDP was high in the Afar and Somali regions. The spatial mapping shows that contraceptive coverage was lower in the eastern part of the country. At zonal administrative level, relatively high (above 55%) proportion of modern contraception use coverage were observed in Adama Liyu Zone, Ilu Ababor, Misrak Shewa, and Kefa zone and the coverage were null in majority of Afar and Somali region zones. Among modern contraceptive users, use of the injectable dominated the method-mix. The modeling result reveals that, living closer to a SDP, having discussions about family planning with the partner, following a Christian religion, no pregnancy intention, being ever pregnant and being young increases the likelihood of using modern contraceptive methods. Conclusion: Areas with low contraceptive coverage and lower access to contraception because of distance should be prioritized by the government and other supporting agencies. Women who discussed family planning with their partner were more likely to use modern contraceptives unlike those without such discussion. Thus, to improve the coverage of contraceptive use, it is very important to encourage/advocate women to have discussions with their partner and establish movable health systems for the nomadic community. Objective: To identify potential gateway factors and behaviors that are associated with infant and young child feeding (IYCF) practices in the Maradi and Zinder regions of Niger through application of the Integrated Gateway Model. Methods: We analyzed data from 2,727 married women of reproductive age including details on child feeding practices for their 2,551 children between the ages of 0 to 23 months. We assessed the association of three gateway behaviors (i.e., any antenatal care, facility delivery, and communication on nutrition practices) and gateway factors (i.e., behavioral determinants, exposure to information, decision-making agency, and woman's group participation) on four IYCF practices (i.e., early initiation of breastfeeding, exclusive breastfeeding, minimum meal frequency, and minimum dietary diversity) while controlling for age, parity, educational attainment, and household wealth. Results: We found antenatal care was associated with exclusive breastfeeding of children 0–5 months [adjusted odds ratio (aOR): 1.17 (95% confidence interval (CI): 1.03–1.33)], and minimum meal frequency of children 6–23 months [aOR: 1.10 (95% CI: 1.03–1.17)], and facility delivery was associated with early initiation of breastfeeding among children 0–5 months [aOR: 2.08 (95% CI: 1.39–3.12)]. We found negative associations with exclusive breastfeeding and communication on nutrition practices with husbands, family/friends, and health workers. Exposure to nutrition messages through radio, women's groups participation, and with health workers was positively associated with minimum dietary diversity. Self-efficacy was positively associated with both early initiation of breastfeeding, exclusive breastfeeding among children 0–5 months and minimum dietary diversity among children 6–23 months. Women's agency was positively associated with early initiation of breastfeeding. Conclusion: The association of antenatal care and facility delivery with child nutrition outcomes suggest intervening before a woman becomes pregnant or early in her pregnancy could improve nutrition outcomes. Background: With the rapid increase in the number of women in their later reproductive years (aged 35 and above) in the present decade, the concern surrounding their contraceptive considerations has reached a critical point of importance. This study aims to examine the trends and determinants of modern contraceptive uptake among later reproductive-aged women in Bangladesh. Methods: A total of 17,736 women aged 35 and above were included in the analysis, utilizing data from three consecutives Bangladesh Demographic and Health Surveys conducted in 2011, 2014, and 2017–18. The outcome variable was the uptake of modern contraceptive methods (yes or no). The explanatory variables encompassed survey years, individual characteristics of the women, as well as characteristics of their partners and the community. Multilevel logistic regression model was used to explore the association of the outcome variable with explanatory variables. Results: We found that approximately 54% of women aged 35 and more do not use modern contraceptive methods, and there have been no significant shifts in their usage observed over the survey years. Compared to women aged 35–39, women aged 40–45 (aOR = 0.53, 95% CI: 0.49–0.57) and 45–49 (aOR = 0.24, 0.22–0.26) reported lower likelihoods of modern contraceptive method uptake. Higher education correlated with increased uptake of modern contraceptive methods (112%-142%), while partner's education showed a negative association. Later reproductive-aged women in richer (aOR = 0.83, 95% CI: 0.74–0.94) and richest (aOR = 0.76, 95% CI: 0.66–0.88) quintiles reported lower uptake of modern contraceptive methods compared to their counterparts in the poorest quintile. Later reproductive-aged women in Dhaka (aOR = 1.22, 95% CI: 1.07–1.38) and Rajshahi (aOR = 1.37, 95% CI: 1.19–1.59) regions had higher uptake of modern contraception than those residing in the Barishal division. Modern contraceptive methods uptake was 1.22 times higher among women who reported exposure to mass media and 1.19 times higher among women who reported engagement in paid work compared to among women who reported no exposure to mass media and participation in no formal work, respectively. Modern contraceptive methods uptake was 43% higher (aOR = 1.43, 95% CI: 1.32–1.55) in women with more than 2 children compared to those with ≤2 children. Conclusion: The study highlights no significant change in modern contraception uptake among later reproductive-aged women in Bangladesh. This raises concerns about the elevated risk of unintended pregnancies and shorter birth intervals, emphasizing the need for targeted interventions to address the specific needs and preferences of this demographic. Background: Stunting and wasting are key public health problems in Ghana that are significantly linked with mortality and morbidity risk among children. However, information on their associated factors using nationally representative data is scanty in Ghana. This study investigated the influence of Infant and Young Child Feeding (IYCF) indicators, socio-demographic and economic related factors, and water and sanitation on stunting and wasting, using nationally representative data in Ghana. Methods: This is a secondary data analysis of the most recent (2017/2018) Ghana Multi-Indicator Cluster Survey (MICS) datasets. The multi-indicator cluster survey is a national cross-sectional household survey with rich data on women of reproductive age and children under the age of five. The survey used a two-stage sampling method in the selection of respondents and a computer-assisted personal interviewing technique to administer structured questionnaires from October 2017 to January 2018. The present study involved 2529 mother-child pairs, with their children aged 6 to 23 months. We used the Complex Sample procedures in SPSS, adjusting for clustering and stratification effects. In a bivariate logistic regression, variables with P-values ≤ 0.05 were included in a backward multivariate logistic regression to identify the significant factors associated with stunting and wasting. Results: The mean age of children was 14.32 ± 0.14 months, with slightly more being males (50.4%). About 12% and 16% of the children were wasted and stunted, respectively. There were 39.4%, 25.9%, and 13.7% of children who, respectively, satisfied the minimum meal frequency (MMF), minimum dietary diversity (MDD), and minimum acceptable diet (MAD). None of the IYCF indicators was significantly associated with stunting or wasting in the multivariate analysis but low socio-economic status, low birth weight, being a male child and unimproved toilet facilities were significantly associated with both wasting and stunting. Conclusion: Our findings suggest that aside from the pre-natal period, in certain contexts, household factors such as low socio-economic status and poor water and sanitation, may be stronger predictors of undernutrition. A combination of nutrition-specific and nutrition-sensitive interventions including the pre-natal period to simultaneously address the multiple determinants of undernutrition need strengthening. Global cannabis use has risen 23% since 2010, with 209 million reported users, most of whom are males of reproductive age. Delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the main psychoactive phytocannabinoid in cannabis, disrupts pro-homeostatic functions of the endocannabinoid system (ECS) within the male reproductive system. The ECS is highly involved in regulating morpho-functional and intrinsic sperm features that are required for fertilization and pre-implantation embryo development. Previous work by our group demonstrated that THC altered sperm capacitation and the transcriptome, including several fertility-associated microRNAs (miRs). Despite the prevalent use of cannabis among males of reproductive age, clinical and pre-clinical research investigating the impact of paternal cannabis on sperm function and the outcomes of artificial reproductive technologies (ARTs) remains inconclusive. Therefore, the present study investigates the impact of in vitro THC exposure on morpho-functional and intrinsic sperm functions, including contributions to embryo development following IVF. Bovine sperm were used as a translational model for human and treated with concentrations of THC that reflect plasma levels after therapeutic (0.032μM), and low (0.32μM)-high (4.8μM) recreational cannabis use. After 6-hours of treatment, THC did not alter the acrosomal reaction, but 4.8μM significantly reduced mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP) (p<0.05), primarily through agonistic interactions with CB-receptors. Fertilization of bovine oocytes with THC-treated sperm did not alter developmental rates, but blastocysts generated from sperm treated with 0.32–4.8μM THC had fewer trophoblasts (p<0.05), while blastocysts generated from sperm exposed to any concentration of THC had fewer cells in the inner cell mass (ICM), particularly within the 0.032μM group (p<0.001). Fertility associated miRs, including miR-346, miR-324, miR-33b, and miR-34c were analyzed in THC-exposed sperm and associated blastocysts generated by IVF, with lower levels of miRs-346, -324, and -33b found in sperm treated with 0.32μM THC, while miR-34c levels were higher in sperm treated with 0.032μM THC (p<0.05). Levels of miR-346 were also lower in sperm treated with 0.032μM THC, but higher in blastocysts generated from sperm exposed to 0.32μM THC (p<0.05). Our findings suggest that THC may alter key morpho-functional and epigenetic sperm factors involved in fertilization and embryo development. Background: Given the health and economic benefits of family planning (FP), Nigeria's very low demand for FP satisfied by modern methods (mDFPS) of less than 50% is therefore a major public health concern, especially considering the global target aimed at achieving an mDFPS of at least 75% by year 2030 for all countries. In view of this, together with recognising the possible contextual nature of health outcomes, this study aimed to empirically analyse the mDFPS among married or in-union women of reproductive age (WRA) in Nigeria. Materials and methods: A multilevel binomial logistic model with two levels of analysis was used: individual and community levels. Secondary cross-sectional data were obtained from the 2018 Nigeria Demographic and Health Survey, and analyses were performed using Stata 15.0. The analytical sample size was 9,122 WRA nested in a total of 1,072 communities. Results: The mDFPS was approximately 31.0%. The median odds ratio (MOR) estimated from the final multilevel model was 2.245, which was greater than the adjusted odds ratio (aOR) for most of the individual-level variables, suggesting that the unexplained/residual between-community variation in terms of the odds of women having their mDFPS was more relevant than the regression effect of most of the individual-level variables. This was with the exception of the regression effects of the following individual-level variables: women's husbands that had higher education level in comparison to their counterparts who had husbands with no formal education (aOR = 2.539; 95% CI = 1.896 to 3.399; p<0.001); and women from the Yoruba ethnic group in comparison to their counterparts from the Hausa/Fulani/Kanuri ethnic group (aOR = 2.484; 95% CI = 1.654 to 3.731; p value<0.001). However, other individual-level variables with positive statistically significant regression effects on mDFPS were: women who mentioned that money for accessing health care was not a problem; women's empowerment in relation to the visitation of family and relatives; and women being exposed to FP messages through various media sources, all in comparison to their respective counterparts. On the other hand, at the community level, women in communities where a high percentage of them had at least a secondary education had statistically significant greater odds of having mDFPS than women in communities with lower education levels (aOR = 1.584; 95% CI = 1.259 to 1.991; p<0.001). We found similar findings regarding women residing in communities with exposure to FP messages through various media sources. However, using the 80% interval ORs (80% IORs) as a supplemental statistical measure for further understanding the regression effects of community-level variables showed that all of the 80% IORs had a value of '1', signifying considerable uncertainty in the regression effects of all community-level variables due to the substantial residual variation existing between communities. Conclusions: Our study showed that to achieve the dire increase in mDFPS in Nigeria, policy interventions aimed at improving the education level of both females and males, especially beyond the secondary school level, should be implemented. Additionally, all of the various media sources should be extensively utilised, both at the individual and the community level, by the Nigerian government to spread information on the importance of women having their mDFPS. Background: Bangladesh's islands, because of their geographical location, frequently encounter crises like floods and river erosion, which pose significant threats to the residents' well-being and livelihoods. To delve into the effects of these disasters on livelihood and healthcare challenges, a mixed-method study was undertaken in a riverine-island near a major river of Bangladesh. Methodology: Between February 15th and February 28th, 2023, a cross-sectional study was conducted on an island in Bangladesh. The quantitative method involved conducting a survey of 442 households, with a total of 2921 participants. Additionally, 10 in-depth interviews and 10 key-informant interviews were conducted using semi-structured guidelines. Qualitative interviews were audio-recorded, transcribed verbatim, and analyzed using a thematic analysis. Triangulation was employed in this study through the integration of qualitative and quantitative analysis, resulting in the presentation of findings that offer an in-depth comprehension of the phenomenon being investigated. Results: River erosions and floods are common and recurring natural disasters that significantly impact the lives of the riverine island inhabitants. These disasters often disrupted their livelihoods, forced many residents to endure substandard living conditions or relocated during flood events. The island faced a low diagnostic prevalence of chronic diseases (e.g., 5.1% of adults were hypertension and 2.5% are diabetes) because of the absence of diagnostic facilities and a shortage of certified doctors. A significant number of chronic illness people in the community turned to alternative medicine sources (39.3%) such as homeopathy, Kabiraj, and Ayurvedic medicine, especially it gets increased during periods of natural disasters. Moreover, reproductive aged women revealed that 79.4% of them gave birth at home, with 6.0% of these home deliveries resulting in miscarriage or infant death. The destruction of crops, unstable job opportunities, an inadequate educational system, and a deficient healthcare delivery system exacerbated the hardships faced by the population affected by these disasters. Conclusion: The failure to seek treatment for chronic diseases and undiagnosed diseases is a significant health issue among the aging adults on the island. Island residents face the challenge of establishing effective prevention strategies for the well-being of older adults especially at the period of natural disasters. It is crucial for the government and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) to collaborate to prevent the negative effects of floods and river erosions. Background: Despite conflicting findings in the current literature regarding the correlation between contraceptives and maternal health consequences, statistical analyses indicate that family planning may decrease the occurrence of such outcomes. Consequently, it is crucial to assess the capability of family planning to mitigate adverse maternal health outcomes. Objectives: This review investigates the effects of modern contraceptive use on maternal health. Search methods: This systematic review is registered on Prospero (CRD42022332783). We searched numerous databases with an upper date limit of February 2022 and no geographical boundaries. Selection criteria: We included observational studies, including cross-sectional, cohort, case-control studies, and non-RCT with a comparison group. We excluded systematic reviews, scoping reviews, narrative reviews, and meta-analyses from the body of this review. Main results: The review included nineteen studies, with five studies reporting a reduction in maternal mortality linked to increased access to family planning resources and contraceptive use. Another three studies examined the impact of contraception on the risk of preeclampsia and our analysis found that preeclampsia risk was lower by approximately 6% among contraceptive users (95% CI 0.82–1.13) compared to non-users. Two studies assessed the effect of hormonal contraceptives on postpartum glucose tolerance and found that low-androgen contraception was associated with a reduced risk of gestational diabetes (OR 0.84, 95% CI 0.58–1.22), while DMPA injection was possibly linked to a higher risk of falling glucose status postpartum (OR 1.42, 95% CI 0.85–2.36). Two studies evaluated high-risk pregnancies and births in contraceptive users versus non-users, with the risk ratio being 30% lower among contraceptive users of any form (95% CI 0.61, 0.80). None of these results were statistically significant except the latter. In terms of adverse maternal health outcomes, certain contraceptives were found to be associated with ectopic pregnancy and pregnancy-related venous thromboembolism through additional analysis. Background: In resource-limited countries with weak healthcare systems, women of reproductive age are particularly vulnerable during times of conflict. In Tigray, Ethiopia, where a war broke out on 04 November 2020, there is a lack of information on causes of death (CoD) among women of reproductive age. This study aims to determine the underlying CoD among women of reproductive age during the armed conflict in Tigray. Methods: This community-based survey was carried out in six Tigray zones, excluding the western zone for security reasons. We used a multistage stratified cluster sampling method to select the smallest administrative unit known as Tabiya. Data were collected using a standardized 2022 WHO Verbal Autopsy (VA) tool. The collected data were analyzed using the InterVA model using R analytic software. The study reported both group-based and cause-specific mortality fractions. Results: A total of 189,087 households were screened and 832 deaths were identified among women of reproductive age. The Global Burden of Disease classification showed that infectious and maternal disorders were the leading CoD, accounting for 42.9% of all deaths. External causes contributed to 26.4% of fatalities, where assault accounted for 13.2% of the deaths. Maternal deaths made up 30.0% of the overall mortality rate. HIV/AIDS was the primary CoD, responsible for 13.2% of all deaths and 54.0% of infectious causes. Other significant causes included obstetric hemorrhage (11.7%) and other and unspecified cardiac disease (6.6%). Conclusions: The high proportion of infectious diseases related CoD, including HIV/AIDS, as well as the occurrence of uncommon external CoD among women, such as assault, and a high proportion of maternal deaths are likely the result of the impact of war in the region. This highlights the urgent need for targeted interventions to address these issues and prioritize sexual and reproductive health as well as maternal health in Tigray. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: The concept of universal health coverage (UHC) encompasses both access to essential health services and freedom from financial harm. The World Health Organization's Maternal Newborn Child and Adolescent Health (MNCAH) Policy Survey collects data on policies that have the potential to reduce maternal morbidity and mortality. The indicator, "Are the following health services provided free of charge at point-of-use in the public sector for women of reproductive age?", captures the free provision of 13 key categories of maternal health-related services, to measure the success of UHC implementation with respect to maternal health. However, it is unknown whether it provides a valid measure of the provision of free care. Therefore, this study compared free maternal healthcare laws and policies against actual practice in three countries. Methods and findings: We conducted a cross-sectional study in four districts/provinces in Argentina, Ghana, and India. We performed desk reviews to identify free care laws and policies at the country level and compared those with reports at the global level. We conducted exit interviews with women aged 15–49 years who used a component service or their accompanying persons, as well as with facility chief financial officers or billing administrators, to determine if women had out-of-pocket expenditures associated with accessing services. For designated free services, prevalence of expenditures at the service level for women and reports by financial officers of women ever having expenditures associated with services designated as free were computed. These three sources of data (desk review, surveys of women and administrators) were triangulated, and chi-square analysis was conducted to determine if charges were levied differentially by standard equity stratifiers. Designation of services as free matched what was reported in the MNCAH Policy Survey for Argentina and Ghana. In India, insecticide-treated bed nets and testing and treatment for syphilis were only designated as free for selected populations, differing from the WHO MNCAH Policy Survey. Among 1046, 923, and 1102 women and accompanying persons who were interviewed in Argentina, Ghana, and India, respectively, the highest prevalence of associated expenditures among women who received a component service in each setting was for cesarean section in Argentina (26%, 24/92); family planning in Ghana (78.4%, 69/88); and postnatal maternal care in India (94.4%, 85/90). The highest prevalence of women ever having out of pocket expenditures associated with accessing any free service reported by financial officers was 9.1% (2/22) in Argentina, 64.1% (93/145) in Ghana, and 29.7% (47/158) in India. Across the three countries, self-reports of out of pocket expenditures were significantly associated with district/province and educational status of women. Additionally, wealth quintile in Argentina and age in India were significantly associated with women reporting out of pocket expenditures. Conclusions: Free care laws were largely accurately reported in the global MNCAH policy database. Notably, we found that women absorbed both direct and indirect costs and made both formal and informal payments for services designated as free. Background: Fertility preference significantly influences contraceptive uptake and impacts population growth, especially in low and middle-income countries. In the previous pieces of literature, variations in fertility preference across residence and wealth categories and its contributors were not assessed in Ethiopia. Therefore, we decomposed high fertility preferences among reproductive-aged women by residence and wealth status in Ethiopia. Methods: We extracted individual women's record (IR) data from the publicly available 2016 Ethiopian Demographic Health Survey (EDHS) dataset. A total of 13799 women were included in the study. Multivariate decomposition analysis was conducted to identify the factors that contributed to the differences in the percentage of fertility preferences between rural and urban dwellers. Furthermore, we used an Erreygers normalized concentration index and curve to identify the concentration of high fertility preferences across wealth categories. The concentration index was further decomposed to identify the contributing factors for the wealth-related disparities in high fertility preference. Finally, the elasticity of wealth-related disparity for a change in the socioeconomic variable was estimated. Results: The weighted percentage of women with high fertility preference among rural and urban residents was 42.7% and 19%, respectively, reflecting a 23.7 percentage point difference. The variations in fertility preference due to the differences in respondents' characteristics accounted for 40.9%. Being unmarried (8.4%), secondary (14.1%) and higher education (21.9%), having more than four children (18.4%), having media exposure (6.9%), middle (0.4%), richer (0.2%) and richest (0.1%) wealth were the positive and city administration (-30.2%), primary education (-1.3%) were the negative contributing factors for the variations in high fertility preferences due to population composition. Likewise, about 59% of the variations in fertility preference were due to variations in coefficients. City administration (22.4%), primary (7.8%) and secondary (7.4%) education, poorer wealth (0.86%) were the positive and having media exposure (-6.32%) and being unmarried (-5.89%), having more than four children (-2.1%) were the negative factors contributing to the difference in high fertility preferences due to the change in coefficients across residents. On the other hand, there was a pro-poor distribution for high fertility preferences across wealth categories with Erreygers normalized concentration index of ECI = -0.14, SE = 0.012. Having media exposure (17.5%), primary (7.3%), secondary (5.4%), higher (2.4%) education, being unmarried (8%), having more than four children (7.4%), rural residence (3%) and emerging (2.2%) were the positive and city administration (-0.55) was the negative significant contributor to the pro-poor disparity in high fertility preference. Conclusion: The variations in high fertility preferences between rural and urban women were mainly attributed to changes in women's behavior. In addition, substantial variations in fertility preference across women's residences were explained by the change in women's population composition. In addition, a pro-poor distribution of high fertility preference was observed among respondents. As such, the pro-poor high fertility preference was elastic for a percent change in socioeconomic variables. The pro-poor high fertility preference was elastic (changeable) for a percent change in each socioeconomic variables. Therefore, women's empowerment through education and access to media will be important in limiting women's desire for more children in Ethiopia. Ovarian torsion (OT) is a gynecological emergency that can have diverse clinical presentations makings its diagnosis especially challenging. Few studies exist in the literature describing the clinical presentation as well as the management of OT in the emergency department (ED). This study aims to describe the clinical presentation, physical examination, emergency management, radiographic and intraoperative findings, histopathology reports and the time-to-intervention metrics of OT cases presenting to the emergency room of our tertiary care center. Data was collected by a retrospective chart review of all OT cases that presented to our ED over a period of 1 year. A total of 20 cases were included in the final analysis. The incidence of OT in the ED was 157.4 per 100 000 visits of women in the reproductive age group. All patients were women of reproductive age, with a mean age of 27.3 years. A total of 15 patients (78.9%) presented within 24 hours of symptom onset. The most common presenting symptom was abdominal pain (95%, 19/20) with most localizing to the right lower quadrant (60%, 12/20), followed by nausea and vomiting (90%, 18/20). Almost all patients (95%, 19/20) required opioids for pain management. The majority (80%, 16/20) were diagnosed by ultrasound prior to surgery, whereas (20%, 4/20) went straight to surgery based on a high index of clinical suspicion. Among those who underwent ultrasound, ovarian cyst was present in (75%, 12/16) while (68.9%, 11/16) showed ovarian enlargement and (50%, 8/16) showed abnormal ovarian blood flow. All patients except one patient underwent operative management. Out of the 19 patients who underwent surgery, the majority of patients (94.7%, 18/19) had viable ovaries with the exception of 1 patient (5.3%) who required a salpingo-oophorectomy post ovarian detorsion. A total of 13 cases included histopathologic review of specimens out of which 6 (46.2%) had a mature cystic teratoma. The mean time from door to ultrasonography was 1.4 hours and from door to surgery was 11.4 hours. Our study provides valuable insights into the incidence, clinical presentation, physical examination, emergency management, ultrasonographic and intraoperative findings, histopathology reports as well as the time-to-intervention metrics of OT patients presenting to the ED. Introduction: Contraceptive use can be lifesaving, empowering and cost-effective for women and girls. Access to contraception is still challenging to female refugees due to several barriers including language, low educational level, lack of information, influence by family members, limited income, cultural and religious norms. This study explored barriers to contraceptive use among South Sudanese refugee women living in Adjumani district, Uganda. Methods: An exploratory study design using qualitative methods were employed involving women of reproductive age (15–49 years). Purposive sampling was used to select participants for Focus Group Discussions (FGDs) and In-depth Interviews (IDIs) from three settlements in Adjumani district. We conducted four FGDs, each consisting of 8 participants. We also conducted fourteen in-depth interviews (IDIs) with women of reproductive age. The IDI and FGD guides were translated into local languages before they were used to collect data. The interviews were recorded, transcribed verbatim and translated into English. Audio recordings were labeled before being translated back to English. Deductive, team-based coding was implemented, and a codebook developed. Transcripts were entered, and data coded using Atlas ti version 14. Data were analyzed using content analysis to produce the final outputs for the study. Results: The study found several challenges to contraceptive use. These included gender dynamics, socially constructed myths on contraceptive use, cultural norms, limited knowledge about contraceptives, men's negative attitudes, antagonism of contraceptive use by leaders and reprisal of women who use contraception. Conclusion: The study concluded that there is need for community strategies to break down the barriers to contraception utilization among refugee women. Background: The use of combined oral contraceptive (COC) is common among women of reproductive age despite the potential risk of them developing thrombotic events. There is a need to understand how COC affects cardiorespiratory function and markers of immune activation in premenopausal women involved in exercise. This highlights a need for a systematic review to enhance our understanding of how the use of COC affects cardiovascular health in premenopausal women subjected to exercise. Method: This systematic review protocol was prepared following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses Protocols (PRISMA-P) 2015 statement. An extensive search of relevant literature by two independent reviewers will be conducted through the EBSCOhost interface to access databases such as MEDLINE, EMBASE, and CINAHL. Other health sources, including Cochrane CENTRAL, unpublished studies and grey literature, will also be searched. The search will include all studies that report the effect of COC on essential parameters of cardiorespiratory function and markers of immune activation in premenopausal women involved in exercise. All included studies will be appraised using appraisal tools, while appropriate extraction tools will be used for data extraction. Where possible, eligible studies will be pooled for meta-analysis. If statistical pooling is not feasible, our findings will be presented in a narrative format. The certainty of evidence will be assessed using the Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development and Evaluation Assessment (GRADE) tool. Objective: Uterine leiomyoma (UL), the most prevalent benign gynecologic tumor among reproductive-aged women, lacks sufficient research on the potential association between dietary intake and its occurrence in Korean women. Addressing this research gap, this study aims to evaluate the potential link between dietary intake and the prevalence of UL in Korean women. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, a cohort of 672 women, aged 23 to 73, were enrolled, with 383 (57%) being premenopausal. Dietary intake was assessed using a validated food frequency questionnaire (FFQ), and UL presence was determined through ultrasonography. The analysis focused exclusively on items within ten categories, including vegetables/fruit, vegetables, fruits, red meat, processed meat, poultry, fish, dairy product, milk, and alcohol. Multiple logistic regression models were employed to explore the relationship between dietary intake and the prevalence of UL, calculating odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) while adjusting for confounding factors. Results: Within the total cohort, 220 (32.7%) women were diagnosed with UL. High intakes of fish and poultry showed an association with higher UL prevalence. Odds ratios (95% CIs) for the upper quartiles compared to the lower quartiles were 1.68 (1.01–2.81; p trend = 0.05) for fish intake and 1.87 (1.11–3.17; p trend = 0.06) for poultry intake. Conversely, an inverse relationship emerged between dairy product intake and UL prevalence, with an odds ratio of 0.58 (95% CI 0.35–0.96; p trend = 0.05). Stratifying the analysis by menopausal status revealed a parallel pattern, with heightened UL prevalence with fish intake and reduced prevalence with dairy product intake. However, the link between poultry intake and UL prevalence was primarily observed among postmenopausal women. Among premenopausal women, elevated vegetable intake was linked to a decreased UL prevalence (OR 0.45, 95% CI 0.21–0.97 for top vs. bottom quartiles; p trend = 0.01). Conclusion: We found that high consumption of fish and poultry, coupled with low intake of dairy products, correlated with an elevated prevalence of UL. Background: Soil-transmitted helminth infections (STH) are associated with substantial morbidity in low-and-middle-income countries, accounting for 2.7 million disability-adjusted life years annually. Current World Health Organization guidelines recommend controlling STH-associated morbidity through periodic deworming of at-risk populations, including children and women of reproductive age (15–49 years). However, there is increasing interest in community-wide mass drug administration (cMDA) which includes deworming adults who serve as infection reservoirs as a method to improve coverage and possibly to interrupt STH transmission. We investigated determinants of cMDA coverage by comparing high-coverage clusters (HCCs) and low-coverage clusters (LCCs) receiving STH cMDA in three countries. Methods: A convergent mixed-methods design was used to analyze data from HCCs and LCCs in DeWorm3 trial sites in Benin, India, and Malawi following three rounds of cMDA. Qualitative data were collected via 48 community-level focus group discussions. Quantitative data were collected via routine activities nested within the DeWorm3 trial, including annual censuses and coverage surveys. The Consolidated Framework for Implementation Research (CFIR) guided coding, theme development and a rating process to determine the influence of each CFIR construct on cMDA coverage. Results: Of 23 CFIR constructs evaluated, we identified 11 constructs that differentiated between HCCs and LCCs, indicating they are potential drivers of coverage. Determinants differentiating HCC and LCC include participant experiences with previous community-wide programs, communities' perceptions of directly observed therapy (DOT), perceptions about the treatment uptake behaviors of neighbors, and women's agency to make household-level treatment decisions. Conclusion: The convergent mixed-methods study identified barriers and facilitators that may be useful to NTD programs to improve cMDA implementation for STH, increase treatment coverage, and contribute to the successful control or elimination of STH. Modeling studies have shown that transmission of STH may be interrupted through implementation of community-wide MDA (cMDA) that targets at-risk and adult populations. This is a mixed-methods implementation science analysis on implementation of the DeWorm3 community cluster randomized controlled trial that aims to determine the feasibility of interrupting STH in Benin, India, and Malawi. Purpose: Gender inequity and adverse health outcomes continue to be of concern among women in sub-Saharan Africa. We determined prevalence of intimate partner violence and excess fertility (having more children than desired) in reproductive age women in Malawi. We also explored factors associated with these outcomes and with spousal fertility intentions. Patients and methods: In a cross-sectional study, a total of 360 women and 410 men were recruited using multi-stage sampling from communities in a peri-urban setting in Blantyre District, Southern Malawi in 2021. Women and men were separately interviewed by trained study workers using a structured questionnaire. In addition to descriptive analyses, we used univariate and multivariate logistic regression models to assess associations of risk factors with the outcomes of intimate partner violence and excess fertility. Results: Among women, lifetime prevalence of intimate partner violence was 23.1%, and excess fertility was experienced by 25.6%. Intimate partner violence was associated with male partners alcohol consumption (adjusted odds ratio 2.13; P = 0.019). Women were more likely to report excess fertility if they were older (adjusted odds ratio 2.0, P<0.001, for a 5-year increase). Alcohol consumption by the male partner (adjusted odds ratio 2.14; P = 0.025) and women being able to refuse sex with their male partner (adjusted odds ratio 0.50; P = 0.036) were associated with discordant fertility preferences. Conclusions: Intimate partner violence, excess fertility, and social and health inequities continue to be prevalent in Malawi. These data suggest the underlying proximal and distal factors associated with these adverse outcomes such as alcohol consumption may be addressed through education, couple interactive communication, and community dialogue. Background: Exposure to isotretinoin during pregnancy must be avoided due to its teratogenicity, but real-world data on its use are scarce. We aimed to describe (i) isotretinoin use in women of childbearing age in Germany; (ii) the occurrence of isotretinoin-exposed pregnancies; and (iii) malformations among children exposed in utero. Methods and findings: Using observational data from the German Pharmacoepidemiological Research Database (GePaRD, claims data from approximately 20% of the German population), we conducted annual cross-sectional analyses to determine age-standardized prevalence of isotretinoin use between 2004 and 2019 among girls and women aged 13 to 49 years. In cohort analyses, we estimated the number of exposed pregnancies by assessing whether there was prescription supply overlapping the beginning of pregnancy (estimated supply was varied in sensitivity analyses) or a dispensation within the first 8 weeks of pregnancy. Data of live-born children classified as exposed in a critical period according to these criteria were reviewed to assess the presence of congenital malformations. The age-standardized prevalence of isotretinoin use per 1,000 girls and women increased from 1.20 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.16, 1.24) in 2004 to 1.96 (95% CI: 1.92, 2.01) in 2019. In the base case analysis, we identified 178 pregnancies exposed to isotretinoin, with the number per year doubling during the study period, and at least 45% of exposed pregnancies ended in an induced abortion. In sensitivity analyses, the number of exposed pregnancies ranged between 172 and 375. Among live-born children, 6 had major congenital malformations. The main limitation of this study was the lack of information on the prescribed dose, i.e., the supply had to be estimated based on the dispensed amount of isotretinoin. Conclusions: Isotretinoin use among girls and women of childbearing age increased in Germany between 2004 and 2019, and there was a considerable number of pregnancies likely exposed to isotretinoin in a critical period. Background: In regions with controlled vector transmission of T. cruzi, congenital transmission is the most frequent route of infection. Treatment with benznidazole (BZ) or nifurtimox (NF) for 60 days in girls and women of childbearing age showed to be effective in preventing mother to child transmission of this disease. Reports on short-course treatment (≤30 days) are scarce. Methods: Retrospective cohort study. Offspring of women with Chagas disease who received short-course treatment (≤30 days) with BZ or NF, attended between 2003 and 2022, were evaluated. Parasitemia (microhaematocrit and/or PCR) was performed at <8 months of age, and serology (ELISA and IHA) at ≥8 months to rule out congenital infection. Results: A total of 27 women receiving ≤30 days of treatment and their children were included in this study. NF was prescribed in 17/27 (63%) women, and BZ in 10/27 (37%). The mean duration of treatment was 29.2 days. None of the women experienced serious adverse events during treatment, and no laboratory abnormalities were observed. Forty infants born to these 27 treated women were included. All newborns were full term, with appropriate weight for their gestational age. No perinatal infectious diseases or complications were observed. Discussion: Several studies have shown that treatment of infected girls and women of childbearing age for 60 days is an effective practice to prevent transplacental transmission of T. cruzi. Our study demonstrated that short-duration treatment (≤30 days) is effective and beneficial in preventing transplacental transmission of Chagas disease. Background: Globally, women experience healthcare inequalities, which may contribute to excessive mortality rates at various stages of their lives. Though Bangladesh has achieved excellent progress in providing healthcare, the country still has some critical challenges that need immediate attention. The objective of this study is to examine the association between social determinants and barriers to accessing healthcare among ever-married women aged 15–49 in Bangladesh. Methods: The study was conducted among 20,127 women aged 15–49, using data from the 2017–2018 Bangladesh Demographic and Health Survey. Four barriers to healthcare were considered: whether women face problems with permission, obtaining money, distance, and companionship. The multivariable logistic regression analysis was used, with a broad array of independent variables (such as age, and educational level) to identify the determinants of barriers to healthcare access. The associations were expressed as adjusted odds ratios (AOR) with a 95% confidence interval (CI). Results: More than two-thirds (66.3%) of women reported having at least one perceived barrier to accessing healthcare. Women with a higher level of education (AOR = 0.49, 95% CI: 0.41–0.57), owning a mobile telephone (AOR = 0.78, 95% CI: 0.73–0.84), and those in the richest wealth quintile (AOR = 0.45, 95% CI: 0.38–0.52) had lower odds of having barriers to accessing healthcare. In addition, widowed (AOR = 1.53, 95% CI: 1.26–1.84), divorced (AOR = 1.91, 95% CI:1.47–2.48), or separated (AOR = 1.98, 95% CI: 1.46–2.69) women had higher odds of having a money barrier to accessing healthcare, than married women. Conclusions: This study shows that individual-, household-, and community-level factors are associated with barriers to healthcare accessibility. To improve the state of women's health in Bangladesh, it is vital to consider these socio-economic factors and implement fundamental measures, such as supporting the national health policy, empowering women's socio-economic situation, and spreading the flexible way of healthcare access. Platynereis dumerilii, a marine annelid, is a model animal that has gained popularity in various fields such as developmental biology, biological rhythms, nervous system organization and physiology, behaviour, reproductive biology, and epigenetic regulation. The transparency of P. dumerilii tissues at all developmental stages makes it easy to perform live microscopic imaging of all cell types. In addition, the slow-evolving genome of P. dumerilii and its phylogenetic position as a representative of the vast branch of Lophotrochozoans add to its evolutionary significance. Although P. dumerilii is amenable to transgenesis and CRISPR-Cas9 knockouts, its relatively long and indefinite life cycle, as well as its semelparous reproduction have been hindrances to its adoption as a reverse genetics model. To overcome this limitation, an adapted culturing method has been developed allowing much faster life cycling, with median reproductive age at 13–14 weeks instead of 25–35 weeks using the traditional protocol. A low worm density in boxes and a strictly controlled feeding regime are important factors for the rapid growth and health of the worms. This culture method has several advantages, such as being much more compact, not requiring air bubbling or an artificial moonlight regime for synchronized sexual maturation and necessitating only limited water change. Background: There is a significant literature describing the link between parity and contraceptive use. However, there is limited knowledge about the disaggregation by parity of the type of contraceptives. In this study, we describe the use of contraceptives by parity among women of reproductive age in Ghana, focusing on use of highly effective methods (injection, pill, intrauterine device, implant, and sterilization). Methods: Using the 2017 Ghana Maternal Health Survey, a nationally-representative cross-sectional household survey, we describe contraceptive method use by number of living children among sexually active women of reproductive age. We then estimated predictors of use of highly effective contraception in a multilevel logistic regression model. Results: Most women in this survey are not using any method of contraception, although this varies by whether or not they have begun childbearing. Contraceptive method use varies by number of living children. Before having children, natural (periodic abstinence and withdrawal) and episodic (condoms) methods dominate. Once a woman has one living child, method preference changes to injectables and implants. Factors associated with using a highly effective method of contraception are: having >3 children, being in a relationship, having had an abortion, being younger than age 30, and having had sexual intercourse within days of answering the survey (p <.001 for all). Conclusion: In this analysis, the number of living children a woman has, her age, and timing of last intercourse are the most significant predictors of using a highly effective method of contraception. However, the majority of participants in this study report not using any method of contraception to avoid unwanted pregnancies. Background: Despite the implementation of different nutritional and non-nutritional interventions, 43% of reproductive-age women in Africa suffer from anemia. Recent evidence also shows that none of the Sub-Saharan African (SSA) countries are on the track to achieve the nutrition target of 50% anemia reduction by 2030. To date, information on the level of anemia and its determinants among reproductive-age women at the SSA level is limited. Thus, this study aimed to estimate the pooled prevalence of anemia level and its determinants in SSA countries. Methods: We used a pooled data of 205,627 reproductive-age women from the recent demographic and health surveys of 29 SSA countries that were conducted between 2010–2021. A multilevel mixed-effects analysis with an ordered logistic regression model was fitted to identify determinants of anemia level and the deviance value was used to select the best-fitted model. First, bivariable ordinal logistic regression analysis was done and the proportional odds assumption was checked for each explanatory variable using a Brant test. Finally, in a multivariable multilevel ordinal logistic regression model, a p-value<0.05 and AOR with the corresponding 95% CI were used to identify determinants of anemia level. All analyses were done using Stata version 17 software. Results: The pooled prevalence of anemia among women of reproductive age in SSA was 40.5% [95% CI = 40.2%-40.7%], where 24.8% [95% CI: 24.6%-25.0%], 11.1% [95% CI = 10.9%-11.2%], and 0.8% [95% CI = 0.7%-0.8%] had mild, moderate, and severe anemia, respectively. The prevalence significantly varied from the lowest of 13% in Rwanda to the highest of 62% in Mali, and anemia was found as a severe public health problem (prevalence of ≥ 40%) in 18 countries. The regression result revealed that polygamous marriage, women and husband illiteracy, poor household wealth, shorter birth interval, non-attendance of antenatal care, underweight, unimproved toilet and water facilities, and low community-level women literacy were positively linked with high anemia level. Additionally, the likelihood of anemia was lower in women who were overweight and used modern contraception. Conclusions: Overall results showed that anemia among women of reproductive age is a severe public health problem in SSA countries, affecting more than four in ten women. Thus, enhancing access to maternal health services (antenatal care and contraception) and improved sanitation facilities would supplement the existing interventions targeted to reduce anemia. Background: Asymptomatic urinary tract infection (asymptomatic bacteriuria and asymptomatic candiduria) may not be routinely detected in sexually active non-pregnant female population at the initial and reversible stages. This is mainly due to the fact that most women may not feel compelled to seek medical attention. Objectives: The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence, and factors associated with urinary tract infection (UTI), and antibiogram of the uropathogen isolates among asymptomatic female college students. Methods: An institutional-based cross-sectional study was conducted at selected colleges in Dessie from January 2021–March 2021. A total of 422 reproductive age (15 to 49 years) non-pregnant female students were included. Socio-demographic and clinical characteristics data were collected using structured questionnaires. Ten mLs of freshly voided mid-stream urine specimen was collected, transported and processed according to the standard operating procedures. Data were coded and entered for statistical analysis using SPSS version 22.0. Descriptive statistics, bivariate and multivariate logistic regression analysis were performed and p-values <0.05 with the corresponding 95% confidence interval (CI) were considered statistically significant. Result: The overall prevalence of UTI was 24.6%. The prevalence of asymptomatic UTI bacteriuria and candiduria was 57 (13.5%) and 47 (11.1%), respectively. The predominant uropathogens were Staphylococcus saprophyticus 24 (23.1%), followed by Candida tropicalis 23 (22.1%), Candida albican 10 (9.6%), Candida krusei 9 (8.7%) and Escherichia coli 8 (7.7%). Gram negative bacterial isolates showed a higher level of resistance to amoxicillin-clavulanic acid 24 (92.3%). Gram positive bacterial uropathogens showed high level of resistance to penicillin 28 (96.6%) and trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole 23 (79.3%). Gram positive bacterial isolates were sensitive to norfloxacin, clindamycin, and ciprofloxacin, accounting for 24 (82.7%), 20 (69.0%), and 19 (65.5%), respectively. Multidrug resistance was seen in 50 (87.7%) of bacterial uropathogens. Factors identified for acquisition of UTI were frequency of sexual intercourse (≥3 per week) (AOR = 7.91, 95% CI: (2.92, 21.42), and genital area washing habit (during defecation (AOR = 5.91, 95%CI: (1.86, 18.81) and every morning (AOR = 6.13, 95%CI: (1.60, 23.45)). Conclusion: A significant prevalence of uropathogens, and high resistance of bacterial isolates to the commonly prescribed drugs were detected. Therefore, routine UTI screening, regular health education on the risk of asymptomatic infectious diseases for reproductive age group females, and antimicrobial susceptibility testing should be practiced to avoid the progression of an asymptomatic infection into a symptomatic UTI.
