The detection and monitoring of burned areas is crucial for vegetation recovery, loss assessment, and anomaly analysis. Although vegetation indices (VIs) have been widely used, accurate vegetation detection is challenging due to potential confusion in the spectra of different types of land cover and the interference of shadow effects caused by terrain. In this work, a novel Vegetation Anomaly Spectral Texture Index (VASTI) is proposed, which leverages the merits of both spectral and spatial texture features to identify abnormal pixels for extracting burned vegetation areas. The performance of the VASTI and its components, the Global Environmental Monitoring Index (GEMI), the Enhanced Vegetation Index (EVI), and the texture feature Autocorrelation (AC) were assessed based on a global dataset previously established, which contains 1774 pairs of samples from 10 different sites. The results illustrated that, compared with the GEMI and EVI, the VASTI improved the user's accuracy (UA), producer's accuracy (PA), and kappa coefficient across the ten study areas by approximately 5% to 10%. Compared to AC, the VASTI improved the accuracy of abnormal vegetation detection by 13% to 25%. The improvements were mainly caused by the fact that the incorporation of texture features can reduce spectral confusion between pixels. The innovation of the VASTI is that it considers the relationship between anomalous pixels and surrounding pixels by explicitly integrating spatial texture features with traditional spectral features. Accurate and reliable mapping of fire extent and severity is critical for assessing the impact of fire on vegetation and informing post-fire recovery trajectories. Classification approaches that combine pixel-wise and neighbourhood statistics including image texture derived from high-resolution satellite data may improve on current methods of fire severity mapping. Texture is an innate property of all land cover surfaces that is known to vary between fire severity classes, becoming increasingly more homogenous as fire severity increases. In this study, we compared candidate backscatter and reflectance indices derived from Sentinel 1 and Sentinel 2, respectively, together with grey-level-co-occurrence-matrix (GLCM)-derived texture indices using a random forest supervised classification framework. Cross-validation (for which the target fire was excluded in training) and target-trained (for which the target fire was included in training) models were compared to evaluate performance between the models with and without texture indices. The results indicated that the addition of texture indices increased the classification accuracies of severity for both sensor types, with the greatest improvements in the high severity class (23.3%) for the Sentinel 1 and the moderate severity class (17.4%) for the Sentinel 2 target-trained models. The target-trained models consistently outperformed the cross-validation models, especially with regard to Sentinel 1, emphasising the importance of local training data in capturing post-fire variation in different forest types and severity classes. The Sentinel 2 models more accurately estimated fire extent and were improved with the addition of texture indices (3.2%). Optical sensor data yielded better results than C-band synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data with respect to distinguishing fire severity and extent. Successful detection using C-band data was linked to significant structural change in the canopy (i.e., partial-complete canopy consumption) and is more successful over sparse, low-biomass forest. Future research will investigate the sensitivity of longer-wavelength (L-band) SAR regarding fire severity estimation and the potential for an integrated fire-mapping system that incorporates both active and passive remote sensing to detect and monitor changes in vegetation cover and structure. To achieve the rapid recognition and accurate picking of Camellia oleifera fruits, a binocular vision system composed of two industrial cameras was used to collect images of Camellia oleifera fruits in natural environments. The YOLOv7 convolutional neural network model was used for iterative training, and the optimal weight model was selected to recognize the images and obtain the anchor frame region of the Camellia oleifera fruits. The local binary pattern (LBP) maps of the anchor frame region were extracted and matched by using the normalized correlation coefficient template matching algorithm to obtain the positions of the center point in the left and right images. The recognition experimental results showed that the accuracy rate, recall rate, mAP and F1 of the model were 97.3%, 97.6%, 97.7% and 97.4%. The recognition rate of the Camellia oleifera fruit with slight shading was 93.13%, and the recognition rate with severe shading was 75.21%. The recognition rate of the Camellia oleifera fruit was 90.64% under sunlight condition, and the recognition rate was 91.34% under shading condition. The orchard experiment results showed that, in the depth range of 400–600 mm, the maximum error value of the binocular stereo vision system in the depth direction was 4.279 mm, and the standard deviation was 1.142 mm. The detection and three-dimensional positioning accuracy of the binocular stereo vision system for Camellia oleifera fruits could basically meet the working requirements of the Camellia oleifera fruit-picking robot. The generation of Digital Elevation Models (DEMs) through stereogrammetry of optical satellite images has gained great popularity across various disciplines. For the analysis of these DEMs, it is important to understand the influence of the input data and different processing steps and parameters employed during stereo correlation. Here, we explore the effects that image texture, as well as the use of different matching algorithms (Block Matching (BM) and More Global Matching (MGM)), can have on optical DEMs derived from the flexible, open-source Ames Stereo Pipeline. Our analysis relies on a ∼2700 km 2 clip of a SPOT6 tristereo scene covering the hyperarid, vegetation-free Pocitos Basin and adjacent mountain ranges in the northwestern Argentine Andes. A large, perfectly flat salt pan (paleolake bed) that covers the center of this basin is characterized by strong contrasts in image texture, providing a unique opportunity to quantitatively study the relationship between image texture and DEM quality unaffected by topography. Our findings suggest that higher image texture, measured by panchromatic variance, leads to lower DEM uncertainty. This improvement continues up to ∼10 3 panchromatic variance, above which further improvements in DEM quality are independent of local image texture but instead may have sensor or geometric origins. Based on this behavior, we propose that image texture may serve as an important proxy of DEM quality prior to stereo correlation and can help to set adequate processing parameters. With respect to matching algorithms, we observe that MGM improves matching in low-texture areas and overall generates a smoother surface that still preserves complex, narrow (i.e., ridge and valley) features. Based on this sharper representation of the landscape, we conclude that MGM should be preferred for geomorphic applications relying on stereo-derived DEMs. However, we note that the correlation kernel selected for stereo-matching must be carefully chosen depending on local image texture, whereby larger kernels generate more accurate matches (less artifacts) at the cost of smoothing results. Monitoring and estimating the density of microalgae in a closed cultivation system is a critical task in culturing algae since it allows growers to optimally control both nutrients and cultivating conditions. Among the estimation techniques proposed so far, image-based methods, which are less invasive, nondestructive, and more biosecure, are practically preferred. Nevertheless, the premise behind most of those approaches is simply averaging the pixel values of images as inputs of a regression model to predict density values, which may not provide rich information of the microalgae presenting in the images. In this work, we propose to exploit more advanced texture features extracted from captured images, including confidence intervals of means of pixel values, powers of spatial frequencies presenting in images, and entropies accounting for pixel distribution. These diverse features can provide more information of microalgae, which can lead to more accurate estimation results. More importantly, we propose to use the texture features as inputs of a data-driven model based on L1 regularization, called least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO), where their coefficients are optimized in a manner that prioritizes more informative features. The LASSO model was then employed to efficiently estimate the density of microalgae presenting in a new image. The proposed approach was validated in real-world experiments monitoring the Chlorella vulgaris microalgae strain, where the obtained results demonstrate its outperformance compared with other methods. In China, cemented paste backfill (CPB) is a common treatment method after the exploitation of basic energy. The homogeneity of slurry influences the performance of CPB. However, the online monitoring and characterization of homogeneity lack relevant technologies and unified standards. This article discusses an online image analysis technique applied to the online monitoring of cemented paste backfill mixing, which is based on the evolution of the texture of images taken at the surface of the mixing bed. First, the grayscale distribution of the image obtained by the high-speed camera in the CPB preparation process was analyzed by Matlab and its variance (s2) was solved, and the texture features of the image were analyzed by the variance of grayscale distribution. Then, a homogeneity discriminant model ( c s t ) was established. The results show that the variance value of the grayscale distribution of the slurry image increases rapidly at first, then gradually decreases, and becomes stable in the final stage since it turns a constant value. When the s2 value tends to be stable, the slurry gradually reaches homogenization, and the discriminant coefficient of paste homogenization based on the homogenization discriminant model reaches 0.05. The homogenization prediction of CPB proves to be consistent with the backfill performance comparison results. The evolution of the texture allows obtaining important information on the evolution of different formulations during mixing, which can be used for intelligent monitoring of CPB preparation process. Carbon fiber plain-woven prepreg is one of the basic materials in the field of composite material design and manufacturing, in which defect identification is an important and easily neglected part of testing. Here, a novel high recognition rate inspection method for carbon fiber plain-woven prepregs is proposed for inspecting bubble and wrinkle defects based on image texture feature compression. The proposed method attempts to divide the image into non-overlapping block lattices as texture primitives and compress them into a binary feature matrix. Texture features are extracted using a gray level co-occurrence matrix. The defect types are further defined according to texture features by k-means clustering. The performance is evaluated in some existing computer vision and machine learning methods based on fiber recognition. Equine odontoclastic tooth resorption and hypercementosis (EOTRH) is one of the horses' dental diseases, mainly affecting the incisor teeth. An increase in the incidence of aged horses and a painful progressive course of the disease create the need for improved early diagnosis. Besides clinical findings, EOTRH recognition is based on the typical radiographic findings, including levels of dental resorption and hypercementosis. This study aimed to introduce digital processing methods to equine dental radiographic images and identify texture features changing with disease progression. The radiographs of maxillary incisor teeth from 80 horses were obtained. Each incisor was annotated by separate masks and clinically classified as 0, 1, 2, or 3 EOTRH degrees. Images were filtered by Mean, Median, Normalize, Bilateral, Binomial, CurvatureFlow, LaplacianSharpening, DiscreteGaussian, and SmoothingRecursiveGaussian filters independently, and 93 features of image texture were extracted using First Order Statistics (FOS), Gray Level Co-occurrence Matrix (GLCM), Neighbouring Gray Tone Difference Matrix (NGTDM), Gray Level Dependence Matrix (GLDM), Gray Level Run Length Matrix (GLRLM), and Gray Level Size Zone Matrix (GLSZM) approaches. GLCM and GLRLM return the most favorable features for the quantitative evaluation of radiographic signs of the EOTRH syndrome, which may be supported by filtering by filters improving the edge delimitation. The objective of this study was to evaluate the usefulness of machine learning based on image texture parameters to discriminate plum stone cultivars. The plums of cultivars 'Emper', 'Kalipso', and 'Polinka' were sampled. For each cultivar, one hundred images of plum stones were acquired using a digital camera. Processing of the plum stone images included the conversion of the images to individual color channels, image segmentation, region of interest (ROI) determination, and texture parameter extraction. Then, the discriminant analysis, including the texture selection and building discriminative models for the evaluation of the diversity of the plum stone cultivars, was carried out. The obtained results of discrimination of plum stone cultivars were very accurate and confirmed the effectiveness of image processing to evaluate the cultivar diversity. The most satisfactory results, reaching 96.67% for the average accuracy for three cultivars (97% for 'Emper', 'Kalipso', and 96% for 'Polinka'), were obtained for the models built based on combined textures selected from all the color channels using the IBk classifier. Simple Summary: Detecting horse state after exercise is critical for maximizing athletic performance. The horse's response to fatigue includes exercise termination or exercise continuation at a lower intensity, which significantly limit the results achieved in races and equestrian competition. As conventional methods of detecting and quantifying exercise effort have shown some limitations, infrared thermography was proposed as a method of contactless detection of exercise effect. The promising correlation between body surface temperature and exercise-dependent blood biomarkers has been demonstrated. As the application of conventional thermography is limited by low specificity, advanced thermal image analysis was proposed here to visualize the link between blood biomarkers and texture of thermal images. Twelve horses underwent standardized exercise tests for six consecutive days, and both thermal images and blood samples were collected before and after each test. The images were analyzed using four color models (RGB, red-green-blue; YUV, brightness-UV-components; YIQ, brightness-IQ-components; HSB, hue-saturation-brightness) and eight texture-features approaches, including 88 features in total. In contrast to conventional temperature measures, as many as twelve texture features in two color models (RGB, YIQ) were linked with blood biomarker levels as part of the horse's response to exercise. As the detection of horse state after exercise is constantly developing, a link between blood biomarkers and infrared thermography (IRT) was investigated using advanced image texture analysis. The aim of the study was to determine which combinations of RGB (red-green-blue), YUI (brightness-UV-components), YIQ (brightness-IQ-components), and HSB (hue-saturation-brightness) color models, components, and texture features are related to the blood biomarkers of exercise effect. Twelve Polish warmblood horses underwent standardized exercise tests for six consecutive days. Both thermal images and blood samples were collected before and after each test. All 144 obtained IRT images were analyzed independently for 12 color components in four color models using eight texture-feature approaches, including 88 features. The similarity between blood biomarker levels and texture features was determined using linear regression models. In the horses' thoracolumbar region, 12 texture features (nine in RGB, one in YIQ, and two in HSB) were related to blood biomarkers. Variance, sum of squares, and sum of variance in the RGB were highly repeatable between image processing protocols. The combination of two approaches of image texture (histogram statistics and gray-level co-occurrence matrix) and two color models (RGB, YIQ), should be considered in the application of digital image processing of equine IRT. In the present paper, a methodological scheme, bringing together common Acoustic Seabed Classification (ASC) systems and a powerful data decomposition approach, called Independent Component Analysis (ICA), is demonstrated regarding its suitability for detecting small targets in Side Scan Sonar imagery. Traditional ASC systems extract numerous texture descriptors, leading to a large feature vector, the dimensionality of which is reduced by means of data decomposition techniques, usually Principal Component Analysis (PCA), prior to classification. However, in the target detection issue, data decomposition should point towards finding components that represent sub-ordinary image information (i.e., small targets) rather than a dominant one. ICA has long been proved to be suitable for separating targets from a background, and this study represents a novel exhibition of its applicability to Side Scan Sonar (SSS) images. The present study attempts to build a fully automated target detection approach that combines image based feature extraction, ICA, and unsupervised classification. The suitability of the proposed approach has been demonstrated using an SSS data-set containing more than 70 manmade targets, most of them metallic, validated through a marine magnetic survey or ground truthing inspection. The method exhibited very good performance as it was able to detect more than 77% of the targets and it produced less than seven false alarms per km². Moreover, it was compared to cases where, in the exact same methodological scheme, no decomposition technique is used, or PCA is employed instead of ICA, achieving the highest detection rate, but, more importantly, producing more than six times less false alarms, thus proving that ICA successfully manages to maximize target to background separation. This study investigated both spectrum and texture features for detecting early blight disease on eggplant leaves. Hyperspectral images for healthy and diseased samples were acquired covering the wavelengths from 380 to 1023 nm. Four gray images were identified according to the effective wavelengths (408, 535, 624 and 703 nm). Hyperspectral images were then converted into RGB, HSV and HLS images. Finally, eight texture features (mean, variance, homogeneity, contrast, dissimilarity, entropy, second moment and correlation) based on gray level co-occurrence matrix (GLCM) were extracted from gray images, RGB, HSV and HLS images, respectively. The dependent variables for healthy and diseased samples were set as 0 and 1. K-Nearest Neighbor (KNN) and AdaBoost classification models were established for detecting healthy and infected samples. All models obtained good results with the classification rates (CRs) over 88.46% in the testing sets. This study proposes a novel method for multichannel image gray level co-occurrence matrix (GLCM) texture representation. It is well known that the standard procedure for the automatic extraction of GLCM textures is based on a mono-spectral image. In real applications, however, the GLCM texture feature extraction always refers to multi/hyperspectral images. The widely used strategy to deal with this issue is to calculate the GLCM from the first principal component or the panchromatic band, which do not include all the useful information. Accordingly, in this study, we propose to represent the multichannel textures for multi/hyperspectral imagery by the use of: (1) clustering algorithms; and (2) sparse representation, respectively. In this way, the multi/hyperspectral images can be described using a series of quantized codes or dictionaries, which are more suitable for multichannel texture representation than the traditional methods. Specifically, K-means and fuzzy c-means methods are adopted to generate the codes of an image from the clustering point of view, while a sparse dictionary learning method based on two coding rules is proposed to produce the texture primitives. The proposed multichannel GLCM textural extraction methods were evaluated with four multi/hyperspectral datasets: GeoEye-1 and QuickBird multispectral images of the city of Wuhan, the well-known AVIRIS hyperspectral dataset from the Indian Pines test site, and the HYDICE airborne hyperspectral dataset from the Washington DC Mall. The results show that both the clustering-based and sparsity-based GLCM textures outperform the traditional method (extraction based on the first principal component) in terms of classification accuracies in all the experiments. Image processing has played a relevant role in various industries, where the main challenge is to extract specific features from images. Specifically, texture characterizes the phenomenon of the occurrence of a pattern along the spatial distribution, taking into account the intensities of the pixels for which it has been applied in classification and segmentation tasks. Therefore, several feature extraction methods have been proposed in recent decades, but few of them rely on entropy, which is a measure of uncertainty. Moreover, entropy algorithms have been little explored in bidimensional data. Nevertheless, there is a growing interest in developing algorithms to solve current limits, since Shannon Entropy does not consider spatial information, and SampEn2D generates unreliable values in small sizes. We introduce a proposed algorithm, EspEn (Espinosa Entropy), to measure the irregularity present in two-dimensional data, where the calculation requires setting the parameters as follows: m (length of square window), r (tolerance threshold), and ρ (percentage of similarity). Three experiments were performed; the first two were on simulated images contaminated with different noise levels. The last experiment was with grayscale images from the Normalized Brodatz Texture database (NBT). First, we compared the performance of EspEn against the entropy of Shannon and SampEn2D. Second, we evaluated the dependence of EspEn on variations of the values of the parameters m, r, and ρ. Third, we evaluated the EspEn algorithm on NBT images. The results revealed that EspEn could discriminate images with different size and degrees of noise. Finally, EspEn provides an alternative algorithm to quantify the irregularity in 2D data; the recommended parameters for better performance are m = 3, r = 20, and ρ = 0.7. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Feature extraction is an essential part of a Computer-Aided Diagnosis (CAD) system. It is usually preceded by a pre-processing step and followed by image classification. Usually, a large number of features is needed to end up with the desired classification results. In this work, we propose a novel approach for texture feature extraction. This method was tested on larynx Contact Endoscopy (CE)—Narrow Band Imaging (NBI) image classification to provide more objective information for otolaryngologists regarding the stage of the laryngeal cancer. Methods: The main idea of the proposed methods is to represent an image as a hilly surface, where different paths can be identified between a starting and an ending point. Each of these paths can be thought of as a Tour de France stage profile where a cyclist needs to perform a specific effort to arrive at the finish line. Several paths can be generated in an image where different cyclists produce an average cyclist effort representing important textural characteristics of the image. Energy and power as two Cyclist Effort Features (CyEfF) were extracted using this concept. The performance of the proposed features was evaluated for the classification of 2701 CE-NBI images into benign and malignant lesions using four supervised classifiers and subsequently compared with the performance of 24 Geometrical Features (GF) and 13 Entropy Features (EF). Results: The CyEfF features showed maximum classification accuracy of 0.882 and improved the GF classification accuracy by 3 to 12 percent. Moreover, CyEfF features were ranked as the top 10 features along with some features from GF set in two feature ranking methods. Conclusion: The results prove that CyEfF with only two features can describe the textural characterization of CE-NBI images and can be part of the CAD system in combination with GF for laryngeal cancer diagnosis. Compared to multispectral or panchromatic bands, fusion imagery contains both the spectral content of the former and the spatial resolution of the latter. Even though the Estimation of Scale Parameter (ESP), the ESP 2 tool, and some segmentation evaluation methods have been introduced to simplify the choice of scale parameter (SP), shape, and compactness, many challenges remain, including obtaining the natural border of plastic greenhouses (PGs) from a GaoFen-2 (GF-2) fusion imagery, accelerating the progress of follow-up texture analysis, and accurately evaluating over-segmentation and under-segmentation of PG segments in geographic object-based image analysis. Considering the features of high-resolution images, the heterogeneity of fusion imagery was compressed using texture analysis before calculating the optimal scale parameter in ESP 2 in this study. As a result, we quantified the effects of image texture analysis, including increasing averaging operator size (AOS) and decreasing greyscale quantization level (GQL) on PG segments via recognition of a proposed Over-Segmentation Index (OSI)-Under-Segmentation Index (USI)-Error Index of Total Area (ETA)-Composite Error Index (CEI) pattern. The proposed pattern can be used to reasonably evaluate the quality of PG segments obtained from GF-2 fusion imagery and its derivative images, showing that appropriate texture analysis can effectively change the heterogeneity of a fusion image for better segmentation. Plant diseases are one of the main reasons behind major economic and production losses in the agricultural field. Current research activities enable large fields monitoring and plant disease detection using innovative and robust technologies. French grapevines have a reputation for producing premium quality wines, however, these major fruit crops are susceptible to many diseases, including Esca, Downy mildew, Powdery mildew, Yellowing, and many others. In this study, we focused on two main infections (Esca and Yellowing), and data were gathered from fields that were located in Acquitaine and Burgundy regions, France. Since plant diseases can be diagnosed from the properties of the leaf, we acquired both Red-Green-Blue (RGB) digital image and hyperspectral reflectance data from infected and healthy leaves. Biophysical parameters that were produced by the PROSPECT model inversion together with texture parameters compiled from the literature were deduced. Then we investigated their relationship to damage caused by Yellowing and Esca. This study examined whether spectral and textural data can identify the two diseases through the use of Neural Networks. We obtained an overall accuracy of 99% for both of the diseases when textural and spectral data are combined. These results suggest that, first, biophysical parameters present a valid dimension reduction tool that could replace the use of complete hyperspectral data. Second, remote sensing using spectral reflectance and digital images can make an overall nondestructive, rapid, cost-effective, and reproducible technique to determine diseases in grapevines with a good level of accuracy. The image texture features obtained from 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography/computed tomography (18F-FDG PET/CT) images of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) have revealed tumor heterogeneity. A combination of genomic data and radiomics may improve the prediction of tumor prognosis. This study aimed to predict NSCLC metastasis using a graph neural network (GNN) obtained by combining a protein–protein interaction (PPI) network based on gene expression data and image texture features. 18F-FDG PET/CT images and RNA sequencing data of 93 patients with NSCLC were acquired from The Cancer Imaging Archive. Image texture features were extracted from 18F-FDG PET/CT images and area under the curve receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) of each image feature was calculated. Weighted gene co-expression network analysis (WGCNA) was used to construct gene modules, followed by functional enrichment analysis and identification of differentially expressed genes. The PPI of each gene module and genes belonging to metastasis-related processes were converted via a graph attention network. Images and genomic features were concatenated. The GNN model using PPI modules from WGCNA and metastasis-related functions combined with image texture features was evaluated quantitatively. Fifty-five image texture features were extracted from 18F-FDG PET/CT, and radiomic features were selected based on AUC (n = 10). Eighty-six gene modules were clustered by WGCNA. Genes (n = 19) enriched in the metastasis-related pathways were filtered using DEG analysis. The accuracy of the PPI network, derived from WGCNA modules and metastasis-related genes, improved from 0.4795 to 0.5830 (p < 2.75 × 10−12). Integrating PPI of four metastasis-related genes with 18F-FDG PET/CT image features in a GNN model elevated its accuracy over a without image feature model to 0.8545 (95% CI = 0.8401–0.8689, p-value < 0.02). The determination of the optimal harvest date is very important to obtain the desired apple quality. This study was aimed at evaluating the impact of the harvest date on selected properties of the following red-fleshed apples: 'Alex Red', 'Trinity', and 'Roxana'. The color parameters of skin and flesh were measured using a portable spectrophotometer. The apple slices were imaged using a digital camera to extract flesh image textures. Then, the contents of chemical compounds, such as sugars, acids, and polyphenols were measured. The loop closure detection (LCD) methods in Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) Visual Inertial Navigation System (VINS) are often affected by issues such as insufficient image texture information and limited observational perspectives, resulting in constrained UAV positioning accuracy and reduced capability to perform complex tasks. This study proposes a Bag-of-Words (BoW) LCD method based on Neural Radiance Field (NeRF), which estimates camera poses from existing images and achieves rapid scene reconstruction through NeRF. A method is designed to select virtual viewpoints and render images along the flight trajectory using a specific sampling approach to expand the limited observational angles, mitigating the impact of image blur and insufficient texture information at specific viewpoints while enlarging the loop closure candidate frames to improve the accuracy and success rate of LCD. Additionally, a BoW vector construction method that incorporates the importance of similar visual words and an adapted virtual image filtering and comprehensive scoring calculation method are designed to determine loop closures. Applied to VINS-Mono and ORB-SLAM3, and compared with the advanced BoW model LCDs of the two systems, results indicate that the NeRF-based BoW LCD method can detect more than 48% additional accurate loop closures, while the system's navigation positioning error mean is reduced by over 46%, validating the effectiveness and superiority of the proposed method and demonstrating its significant importance for improving the navigation accuracy of VINS. Since Neural Radiation Field (NeRF) was first proposed, a large number of studies dedicated to them have emerged. These fields achieved very good results in their respective contexts, but they are not sufficiently practical for our project. If we want to obtain novel images of satellites photographed in space by another satellite, we must face problems like inaccurate camera focal lengths and poor image texture. There are also some small structures on satellites that NeRF-like algorithms cannot render well. In these cases, the NeRF's performance cannot sufficiently meet the project's needs. In fact, the images rendered by the NeRF will have many incomplete structures, while the MipNeRF will blur the edges of the structures on the satellite and obtain unrealistic colors. In response to these problems, we proposed STs-NeRF, which improves the quality of the new perspective images through an encoding module and a new network structure. We found a method for calculating poses that are suitable for our dataset and that enhance the network's input learning effect by recoding the sampling points and viewing directions through a dynamic encoding (DE) module. Then, we input them into our layer-by-layer normalized multi-layer perceptron (LLNMLP). By simultaneously inputting points and directions into the network, we avoid the mutual influence between light rays, and through layer-by-layer normalization, we ease the model's overfitting from a training perspective. Since real images should not be made public, we created a synthetic dataset and conducted a series of experiments. The experiments showed that our method achieves the best results in reconstructing captured satellite images, compared with the NeRF, the MipNeRF, the NeuS and the NeRF2Mesh, and improves the Peak Signal-to-Noise Ratio (PSNR) by 19%. Pasture degradation poses significant economic, social, and environmental impacts in the Brazilian savanna ecosystem. Despite these impacts, effectively detecting varying intensities of agronomic and biological degradation through remote sensing remains challenging. This study explores the potential of the eight-band PlanetScope SuperDove satellite constellation to discriminate between five classes of pasture degradation: non-degraded pasture (NDP); pastures with low- (LID) and moderate-intensity degradation (MID); severe agronomic degradation (SAD); and severe biological degradation (SBD). Using a set of 259 cloud-free images acquired in 2022 across five sites located in central Brazil, the study aims to: (i) identify the most suitable period for discriminating between various degradation classes; (ii) evaluate the Random Forest (RF) classification performance of different SuperDove attributes; and (iii) compare metrics of accuracy derived from two predicted scenarios of pasture degradation: a more challenging one involving five classes (NDP, LID, MID, SAD, and SBD), and another considering only non-degraded and severely degraded pastures (NDP, SAD, and SBD). The study assessed individual and combined sets of SuperDove attributes, including band reflectance, vegetation indices, endmember fractions from spectral mixture analysis (SMA), and image texture variables from Gray-level Co-occurrence Matrix (GLCM). The results highlighted the effectiveness of the transition from the rainy to the dry season and the period towards the beginning of a new seasonal rainy cycle in October for discriminating pasture degradation. In comparison to the dry season, more favorable discrimination scenarios were observed during the rainy season. In the dry season, increased amounts of non-photosynthetic vegetation (NPV) complicate the differentiation between NDP and SBD, which is characterized by high soil exposure. Pastures exhibiting severe biological degradation showed greater sensitivity to water stress, manifesting earlier reflectance changes in the visible and near-infrared bands of SuperDove compared to other classes. Reflectance-based classification yielded higher overall accuracy (OA) than the approaches using endmember fractions, vegetation indices, or texture metrics. Classifications using combined attributes achieved an OA of 0.69 and 0.88 for the five-class and three-class scenarios, respectively. In the five-class scenario, the highest F1-scores were observed for NDP (0.61) and classes of agronomic (0.71) and biological (0.88) degradation, indicating the challenges in separating low and moderate stages of pasture degradation. An initial comparison of RF classification results for the five categories of degraded pastures, utilizing reflectance data from MultiSpectral Instrument (MSI)/Sentinel-2 (400–2500 nm) and SuperDove (400–900 nm), demonstrated an enhanced OA (0.79 versus 0.66) with Sentinel-2 data. This enhancement is likely to be attributed to the inclusion of shortwave infrared (SWIR) spectral bands in the data analysis. Faced with the problem of incompatibility between traditional information acquisition mode and spaceborne earth observation tasks, starting from the general mathematical model of compressed sensing, a theoretical model of block compressed sensing was established, and a full-process adaptive coding and decoding compressed sensing framework for remote sensing images was proposed, which includes five parts: mode selection, feature factor extraction, adaptive shape segmentation, adaptive sampling rate allocation and image reconstruction. Unlike previous semi-adaptive or local adaptive methods, the advantages of the adaptive encoding and decoding method proposed in this paper are mainly reflected in four aspects: (1) Ability to select encoding modes based on image content, and maximizing the use of the richness of the image to select appropriate sampling methods; (2) Capable of utilizing image texture details for adaptive segmentation, effectively separating complex and smooth regions; (3) Being able to detect the sparsity of encoding blocks and adaptively allocate sampling rates to fully explore the compressibility of images; (4) The reconstruction matrix can be adaptively selected based on the size of the encoding block to alleviate block artifacts caused by non-stationary characteristics of the image. Experimental results show that the method proposed in this article has good stability for remote sensing images with complex edge textures, with the peak signal-to-noise ratio and structural similarity remaining above 35 dB and 0.8. Moreover, especially for ocean images with relatively simple image content, when the sampling rate is 0.26, the peak signal-to-noise ratio reaches 50.8 dB, and the structural similarity is 0.99. In addition, the recovered images have the smallest BRISQUE value, with better clarity and less distortion. In the subjective aspect, the reconstructed image has clear edge details and good reconstruction effect, while the block effect is effectively suppressed. The framework designed in this paper is superior to similar algorithms in both subjective visual and objective evaluation indexes, which is of great significance for alleviating the incompatibility between traditional information acquisition methods and satellite-borne earth observation missions. This study aimed to identify a distant-recurrence image biomarker in NSCLC by investigating correlations between heterogeneity functional gene expression and fluorine-18-2-fluoro-2-deoxy-D-glucose positron emission tomography (18F-FDG PET) image features of NSCLC patients. RNA-sequencing data and 18F-FDG PET images of 53 patients with NSCLC (19 with distant recurrence and 34 without recurrence) from The Cancer Imaging Archive and The Cancer Genome Atlas Program databases were used in a combined analysis. Weighted correlation network analysis was performed to identify gene groups related to distant recurrence. Genes were selected for functions related to distant recurrence. In total, 47 image features were extracted from PET images as radiomics. The relationship between gene expression and image features was estimated using a hypergeometric distribution test with the Pearson correlation method. The distant recurrence prediction model was validated by a random forest (RF) algorithm using image texture features and related gene expression. In total, 37 gene modules were identified by gene-expression pattern with weighted gene co-expression network analysis. The gene modules with the highest significance were selected (p-value < 0.05). Nine genes with high protein–protein interaction and area under the curve (AUC) were identified as hub genes involved in the proliferation function, which plays an important role in distant recurrence of cancer. Four image features (GLRLM_SRHGE, GLRLM_HGRE, SUVmean, and GLZLM_GLNU) and six genes were identified to be correlated (p-value < 0.1). AUCs (accuracy: 0.59, AUC: 0.729) from the 47 image texture features and AUCs (accuracy: 0.767, AUC: 0.808) from hub genes were calculated using the RF algorithm. AUCs (accuracy: 0.783, AUC: 0.912) from the four image texture features and six correlated genes and AUCs (accuracy: 0.738, AUC: 0.779) from only the four image texture features were calculated using the RF algorithm. The four image texture features validated by heterogeneity group gene expression were found to be related to cancer heterogeneity. Rejoining oracle bone fragments plays an import role in studying the history and culture of the Shang dynasty by its characters. However, current computer vision technology has a low accuracy in judging whether the texture of oracle bone fragment image pairs can be put back together. When rejoining fragment images, the coordinate sequence and texture features of edge pixels from original and target fragment images form a continuous symmetrical structure, so we put forward an internal similarity network (ISN) to rejoin the fragment image automatically. Firstly, an edge equidistant matching (EEM) algorithm was given to search similar coordinate sequences of edge segment pairs on the fragment image contours and to locally match the edge coordinate sequence of an oracle bone fragment image. Then, a target mask-based method was designed in order to put two images into a whole and to cut a local region image by the local matching edge. Next, we calculated a convolution feature gradient map (CFGM) of the local region image texture, and an internal similarity pooling (ISP) layer was proposed to compute the internal similarity of the convolution feature gradient map. Finally, ISN was contributed in order to evaluate a similarity score of a local region image texture and to determine whether two fragment images are a coherent whole. The experiments show that the correct judgement probability of ISN is higher than 90% in actual rejoining work and that our method searched 37 pairs of correctly rejoined oracle bone fragment images that have not been discovered by archaeologists. Soil organic matter is an important component that reflects soil fertility and promotes plant growth. The soil of typical Chinese tea plantations was used as the research object in this work, and by combining soil hyperspectral data and image texture characteristics, a quantitative prediction model of soil organic matter based on machine vision and hyperspectral imaging technology was built. Three methods, standard normalized variate (SNV), multisource scattering correction (MSC), and smoothing, were first used to preprocess the spectra. After that, random frog (RF), variable combination population analysis (VCPA), and variable combination population analysis and iterative retained information variable (VCPA-IRIV) algorithms were used to extract the characteristic bands. Finally, the quantitative prediction model of nonlinear support vector regression (SVR) and linear partial least squares regression (PLSR) for soil organic matter was established by combining nine color features and five texture features of hyperspectral images. The outcomes demonstrate that, in comparison to single spectral data, fusion data may greatly increase the performance of the prediction model, with MSC + VCPA-IRIV + SVR (R2C = 0.995, R2P = 0.986, RPD = 8.155) being the optimal approach combination. Leaf Area Index (LAI) is a fundamental indicator of plant growth status in agronomy and environmental research. With the rapid development of drone technology, the estimation of crop LAI based on drone imagery and vegetation indices is becoming increasingly popular. However, there is still a lack of detailed research on the feasibility of using image texture to estimate LAI and the impact of combining texture indices with vegetation indices on LAI estimation accuracy. In this study, two key growth stages of winter wheat (i.e., the stages of green-up and jointing) were selected, and LAI was calculated using digital hemispherical photography. The feasibility of predicting winter wheat LAI was explored under three conditions: vegetation index, texture index, and a combination of vegetation index and texture index, at flight heights of 20 m and 40 m. Two feature selection methods (Lasso and recursive feature elimination) were combined with four machine learning regression models (multiple linear regression, random forest, support vector machine, and backpropagation neural network). The results showed that during the vegetative growth stage of winter wheat, the model combining texture information with vegetation indices performed better than the models using vegetation indices alone or texture information alone. Among them, the best prediction result based on vegetation index was RFECV-MLR at a flight height of 40 m (R2 = 0.8943, RMSE = 0.4139, RRMSE = 0.1304, RPD = 3.0763); the best prediction result based on texture index was RFECV-RF at a flight height of 40 m (R2 = 0.8894, RMSE = 0.4236, RRMSE = 0.1335, RPD = 3.0063); and the best prediction result combining texture and index was RFECV-RF at a flight height of 40 m (R2 = 0.9210, RMSE = 0.3579, RRMSE = 0.1128, RPD = 3.5575). The results of this study demonstrate that combining vegetation indices and texture from multispectral drone imagery can improve the accuracy of LAI estimation during the vegetative growth stage of winter wheat. In addition, selecting a flight height of 40 m can improve efficiency in large-scale agricultural field monitoring, as this study showed that drone data at flight heights of 20 m and 40 m did not significantly affect model accuracy. In order to obtain high-quality images, the application of low-illumination image enhancement techniques plays a vital role in enhancing the overall visual appeal. However, it is particularly difficult to enhance an image while maintaining the original information of the scene. The augmentation method based on Retinex theory is widely considered as one of the representative techniques for such problems, but this method still has some limitations. First of all, noise is easily ignored in the process of model building, and the robustness of the model needs to be improved. Secondly, the image decomposition is less effective, so that part of the image information is not effectively presented. Finally, the optimization procedure is computationally complicated. This paper introduces a novel approach for enhancing low-illumination images by utilizing the relative deviation of local gradients. The proposed method aims to address the challenges associated with low-illumination images and offers a solution to these issues. In this paper, local gradient relative deviation is used as a constraint term and a noise term is added to highlight the image texture and structure and improve the robustness of the models, considering that L P achieves piecewise smoothing with better sparsity compared to the sum norm commonly used by L 1 and L 2 norms. In this paper, the L 2 − L P norm is used to constrain the model, which smooths the illumination component and better preserves the details of the reflectance component. In addition, to efficiently solve the optimization problem, the alternating direction multiplier method is chosen to transform the optimization process into the solution of several sub-problems. In comparison to traditional Retinex models, the proposed method excels in its ability to simultaneously enhance the image and suppress noise effectively. The experimental outcomes demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed model in enhancing both simulated and real data. Area-based analyses of airborne laser scanning (ALS) data are an established approach to obtain wall-to-wall predictions of forest characteristics for vast areas. The analyses of sparse data in particular are based on the height value distributions, which do not produce optimal information on the horizontal forest structure. We evaluated the complementary potential of features quantifying the textural variation of ALS-based canopy height models (CHMs) for both supervised (linear regression) and unsupervised (k-Means clustering) analyses. Based on a comprehensive literature review, we identified a total of four texture analysis methods that produced rotation-invariant features of different order and scale. The CHMs and the textural features were derived from practical sparse-density, leaf-off ALS data originally acquired for ground elevation modeling. The features were extracted from a circular window of 254 m² and related with boreal forest characteristics observed from altogether 155 field sample plots. Features based on gray-level histograms, distribution of forest patches, and gray-level co-occurrence matrices were related with plot volume, basal area, and mean diameter with coefficients of determination (R²) of up to 0.63-0.70, whereas features that measured the uniformity of local binary patterns of the CHMs performed poorer. Overall, the textural features compared favorably with benchmark features based on the point data, indicating that the textural features contain additional information useful for the prediction of forest characteristics. Due to the developed processing routines for raster data, the CHM features may potentially be extracted with a lower computational burden, which promotes their use for applications such as pre-stratification or guiding the field plot sampling based solely on ALS data. We tested the Moment Distance Index (MDI) in combination with texture features for the summer vegetation mapping in the eastern Pamir Mountains, Tajikistan using the 2014 Landsat OLI (Operational Land Imager) image. The five major classes identified were sparse vegetation, medium-dense vegetation, dense vegetation, barren land, and water bodies. By utilizing object features in a random forest (RF) classifier, the overall classification accuracy of the land cover maps were 92% using a set of variables including texture features and MDI, and 84% using a set of variables including texture but without MDI. A decrease of the Kappa statistics, from 0.89 to 0.79, was observed when MDI was removed from the set of predictor variables. McNemar's test showed that the increase in the classification accuracy due to the addition of MDI was statistically significant (p < 0.05). Quantifying the kinematic evolution patterns of mountain glaciers near Yarlung Tsanpo River performs a major role in evaluating the glacial instability and the secondary disasters. For the Sedongpu Basin near the Yarlung Tsanpo River Valley, the dramatic geomorphic landscape variations triggered by the ice-rock avalanche events were visually identified as the dominant texture deficiencies in time-series optical images. To improve the image correlation quality broken by these image texture deficiencies, the Landsat-8/Sentinel-2 optical images were divided into different groups, then a stepwise combination strategy was innovatively proposed to derive the glacier time-series displacement velocities in different temporal stages. The standard deviations (STD) of the optical measurements in the stable area maintained around 0.04 m/yr for the normalized displacement velocity and maintained from 0.6 to 1.7 m for the cumulative displacement time series. The obvious variations in glacier displacement velocity were identified before each collapse event. Subsequently, the offset-tracking procedures were performed on 7 Sentinel-1A Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) images to acquire the range and azimuth displacement velocities. To better reveal the dynamic mechanism of the glacier activity, the three-dimensional (3D) glacial displacement velocity was also derived by using optical and SAR results. The precipitation, temperature, and seismic activities were assumed as the main triggering factors of controlling the glacial dynamic mechanism and final collapse events. Additionally, the dynamic mechanism of the active glaciers in Sedongpu Basin conformed to a power law, which was limited by the changes of the internal stress friction force on the sliding base surface. The aim of this study is to shed a light on interpreting the precursory displacement patterns and their implicit failure mechanism of these ice-rock avalanche events with the conventional freely optical and SAR observations. In the field of single-image super-resolution reconstruction, GAN can obtain the image texture more in line with the human eye. However, during the reconstruction process, it is easy to generate artifacts, false textures, and large deviations in details between the reconstructed image and the Ground Truth. In order to further improve the visual quality, we study the feature correlation between adjacent layers and propose a differential value dense residual network to solve this problem. We first use the deconvolution layer to enlarge the features, then extract the features through the convolution layer, and finally make a difference between the features before being magnified and the features after being extracted so that the difference can better reflect the areas that need attention. In the process of extracting the differential value, using the dense residual connection method for each layer can make the magnified features more complete, so the differential value obtained is more accurate. Next, the joint loss function is introduced to fuse high-frequency information and low-frequency information, which improves the visual effect of the reconstructed image to a certain extent. The experimental results on Set5, Set14, BSD100, and Urban datasets show that our proposed DVDR-SRGAN model is improved in terms of PSNR, SSIM, and LPIPS compared with the Bicubic, SRGAN, ESRGAN, Beby-GAN, and SPSR models. Intensified complementary metal-oxide semiconductor (ICMOS) sensors can capture images under extremely low-light conditions (≤0.01 lux illumination), but the results exhibit spatially clustered noise that seriously damages the structural information. Existing image-denoising methods mainly focus on simulated noise and real noise from normal CMOS sensors, which can easily mistake the ICMOS noise for the latent image texture. To solve this problem, we propose a low-light cross-scale transformer (LL-CSFormer) that adopts multi-scale and multi-range learning to better distinguish between the noise and signal in ICMOS sensing images. For multi-scale aspects, the proposed LL-CSFormer designs parallel multi-scale streams and ensures information exchange across different scales to maintain high-resolution spatial information and low-resolution contextual information. For multi-range learning, the network contains both convolutions and transformer blocks, which are able to extract noise-wise local features and signal-wise global features. To enable this, we establish a novel ICMOS image dataset of still noisy bursts under different illumination levels. We also designed a two-stream noise-to-noise training strategy for interactive learning and data augmentation. Experiments were conducted on our proposed ICMOS image dataset, and the results demonstrate that our method is able to effectively remove ICMOS image noise compared with other image-denoising methods using objective and subjective metrics. Currently, bone age is assessed by X-rays. It enables the evaluation of the child's development and is an important diagnostic factor. However, it is not sufficient to diagnose a specific disease because the diagnoses and prognoses may arise depending on how much the given case differs from the norms of bone age. Background: The use of magnetic resonance images (MRI) to assess the age of the patient would extend diagnostic possibilities. The bone age test could then become a routine screening test. Changing the method of determining the bone age would also prevent the patient from taking a dose of ionizing radiation, making the test less invasive. Methods: The regions of interest containing the wrist area and the epiphyses of the radius are marked on the magnetic resonance imaging of the non-dominant hand of boys aged 9 to 17 years. Textural features are computed for these regions, as it is assumed that the texture of the wrist image contains information about bone age. Results: The regression analysis revealed that there is a high correlation between the bone age of a patient and the MRI-derived textural features derived from MRI. For DICOM T1-weighted data, the best scores reached 0.94 R2, 0.46 RMSE, 0.21 MSE, and 0.33 MAE. Conclusions: The experiments performed have shown that using the MRI images gives reliable results in the assessment of bone age while not exposing the patient to ionizing radiation. Aboveground biomass (AGB) is an important indicator used to predict crop yield. Traditional spectral features or image textures have been proposed to estimate the AGB of crops, but they perform poorly at high biomass levels. This study thus evaluated the ability of spectral features, image textures, and their combinations to estimate winter wheat AGB. Spectral features were obtained from the wheat canopy reflectance spectra at 400–1000 nm, including original wavelengths and seven vegetation indices. Effective wavelengths (EWs) were screened through use of the successive projection algorithm, and the optimal vegetation index was selected by correlation analysis. Image texture features, including texture features and the normalized difference texture index, were extracted using gray level co-occurrence matrices. Effective variables, including the optimal texture subset (OTEXS) and optimal normalized difference texture index subset (ONDTIS), were selected by the ranking of feature importance using the random forest (RF) algorithm. Linear regression (LR), partial least squares regression (PLS), and RF were established to evaluate the relationship between each calculated feature and AGB. Results demonstrate that the ONDTIS with PLS based on the validation datasets exhibited better performance in estimating AGB for the post-seedling stage (R2 = 0.75, RMSE = 0.04). Moreover, the combinations of the OTEXS and EWs exhibited the highest prediction accuracy for the seeding stage when based on the PLS model (R2 = 0.94, RMSE = 0.01), the post-seedling stage when based on the LR model (R2 = 0.78, RMSE = 0.05), and for all stages when based on the RF model (R2 = 0.87, RMSE = 0.05). Noise in an image can affect one's extraction of image information, therefore, image denoising is an important image pre-processing process. Many of the existing models have a large number of estimated parameters, which increases the time complexity of the model solution and the achieved denoising effect is less than ideal. As a result, in this paper, an improved image-denoising algorithm is proposed based on the TV model, which effectively solves the above problems. The L1 regularization term can make the solution generated by the model sparser, thus facilitating the recovery of high-quality images. Reducing the number of estimated parameters, while using the inverse gradient to estimate the regularization parameters, enables the parameters to achieve global adaption and improves the denoising effect of the model in combination with the TV regularization term. The split Bregman iteration method is used to decouple the model into several related subproblems, and the solutions of the coordinated subproblems are derived as optimal solutions. It is also shown that the solution of the model converges to a Karush–Kuhn–Tucker point. Age-related macular degeneration is a visual disorder caused by abnormalities in a part of the eye's retina and is a leading source of blindness. The correct detection, precise location, classification, and diagnosis of choroidal neovascularization (CNV) may be challenging if the lesion is small or if Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) images are degraded by projection and motion. This paper aims to develop an automated quantification and classification system for CNV in neovascular age-related macular degeneration using OCT angiography images. OCT angiography is a non-invasive imaging tool that visualizes retinal and choroidal physiological and pathological vascularization. The presented system is based on new retinal layers in the OCT image-specific macular diseases feature extractor, including Multi-Size Kernels ξcho-Weighted Median Patterns (MSKξMP). Computer simulations show that the proposed method: (i) outperforms current state-of-the-art methods, including deep learning techniques; and (ii) achieves an overall accuracy of 99% using ten-fold cross-validation on the Duke University dataset and over 96% on the noisy Noor Eye Hospital dataset. With the development of deep learning, convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have been successfully applied in the field of change detection in heterogeneous remote sensing (RS) images and achieved remarkable results. However, most of the existing methods of heterogeneous RS image change detection only extract deep features to realize the whole image transformation and ignore the description of the topological structure composed of the image texture, edge, and direction information. The occurrence of change often means that the topological structure of the ground object has changed. As a result, these algorithms severely limit the performance of change detection. To solve these problems, this paper proposes a new topology-coupling-based heterogeneous RS image change detection network (TSCNet). TSCNet transforms the feature space of heterogeneous images using an encoder–decoder structure and introduces wavelet transform, channel, and spatial attention mechanisms. The wavelet transform can obtain the details of each direction of the image and effectively capture the image's texture features. Unnecessary features are suppressed by allocating more weight to areas of interest via channels and spatial attention mechanisms. As a result of the organic combination of a wavelet, channel attention mechanism, and spatial attention mechanism, the network can focus on the texture information of interest while suppressing the difference of images from different domains. On this basis, a bitemporal heterogeneous RS image change detection method based on the TSCNet framework is proposed. The experimental results on three public heterogeneous RS image change detection datasets demonstrate that the proposed change detection framework achieves significant improvements over the state-of-the-art methods. Here, we propose a CNN-based infrared image enhancement method to transform pseudo-realistic regions of simulation-based infrared images into real infrared texture. The proposed algorithm consists of the following three steps. First, target infrared features based on a real infrared image are extracted through pretrained VGG-19 networks. Next, by implementing a neural style-transfer algorithm to a simulated infrared image, fractal nature features from the real infrared image are progressively applied to the image. Therefore, the fractal characteristics of the simulated image are improved. Finally, based on the results of fractal analysis, peak signal-to-noise (PSNR), structural similarity index measure (SSIM), and natural image quality evaluator (NIQE) texture evaluations are performed to know how the simulated infrared image is properly transformed as it contains the real infrared fractal features. We verified the proposed methodology using a simulation with three different simulation conditions with a real mid-wave infrared (MWIR) image. As a result, the enhanced simulated infrared images based on the proposed algorithm have better NIQE and SSIM score values in both brightness and fractal characteristics, indicating the closest similarity to the given actual infrared image. Survey data describing land cover information such as type and diversity over several decades are scarce. Therefore, our capacity to reconstruct historical land cover using field data and archived remotely sensed data over large areas and long periods of time is somewhat limited. This study explores the relationship between CORONA texture-a surrogate for actual land cover type and complexity-with spectral vegetation indices and texture variables derived from Landsat MSS under the Spectral Variation Hypothesis (SVH) such as to reconstruct historical continuous land cover type and complexity. Image texture of CORONA was calculated using a mean occurrence measure while image textures of Landsat MSS were calculated by occurrence and co-occurrence measures. The relationship between these variables was evaluated using correlation and regression techniques. The reconstruction procedure was undertaken through regression kriging. The results showed that, as expected, texture based on the visible bands and corresponding indices indicated larger correlation with CORONA texture, a surrogate of land cover (correlation >0.65). In terms of prediction, the combination of the first-order mean of band green, second-order measure of tasseled cap brightness, second-order mean of Normalized Visible Index (NVI) and second-order entropy of NIR yielded the best model with respect to Akaike's Information Criterion (AIC), r-square, and variance inflation factors (VIF). The regression model was then used in regression kriging to map historical continuous land cover. The resultant maps indicated the type and degree of complexity in land cover. Moreover, the proposed methodology minimized the impacts of topographic shadow in the region. The performance of this approach was compared with two conventional classification methods: hard classifiers and continuous classifiers. In contrast to conventional techniques, the technique could clearly quantify land cover complexity and type. Future applications of CORONA datasets such as this one could include: improved quality of CORONA imagery, studies of the CORONA texture measures for extracting ecological parameters (e.g., species distributions), change detection and super resolution mapping using CORONA and Landsat MSS. Image deblurring attracts research attention in the field of image processing and computer vision. Traditional deblurring methods based on statistical prior largely depend on the selected prior type, which limits their restoring ability. Moreover, the constructed deblurring model is difficult to solve, and the operation is comparatively complicated. Meanwhile, deep learning has become a hotspot in various fields in recent years. End-to-end convolutional neural networks (CNNs) can learn the pixel mapping relationships between degraded images and clear images. In addition, they can also obtain the result of effectively eliminating spatial variable blurring. However, conventional CNNs have some disadvantages in generalization ability and details of the restored image. Therefore, this paper presents an iterative dual CNN called IDC for image deblurring, where the task of image deblurring is divided into two sub-networks: deblurring and detail restoration. The deblurring sub-network adopts a U-Net structure to learn the semantical and structural features of the image, and the detail restoration sub-network utilizes a shallow and wide structure without downsampling, where only the image texture features are extracted. Finally, to obtain the deblurred image, this paper presents a multiscale iterative strategy that effectively improves the robustness and precision of the model. The experimental results showed that the proposed method has an excellent effect of deblurring on a real blurred image dataset and is suitable for various real application scenes. This study aimed to evaluate the value of the deep learning image reconstruction (DLIR) algorithm (GE Healthcare's TrueFidelity™) in improving the image quality of low-dose computed tomography (LDCT) of the chest. First, we retrospectively extracted raw data of chest LDCT from 50 patients and reconstructed them by using model-based adaptive statistical iterative reconstruction-Veo at 50% (ASIR-V 50%) and DLIR at medium and high strengths (DLIR-M and DLIR-H). Three sets of images were obtained. Next, two radiographers measured the mean CT value/image signal and standard deviation (SD) in Hounsfield units at the region of interest (ROI) and calculated the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR). Two radiologists subjectively evaluated the image quality using a 5-point Likert scale. The differences between the groups of data were analyzed through a repeated measures ANOVA or the Friedman test. Last, our result show that the three reconstructions did not differ significantly in signal (p > 0.05) but had significant differences in noise, SNR, and CNR (p < 0.001). The subjective scores significantly differed among the three reconstruction modalities in soft tissue (p < 0.001) but not in lung tissue (p > 0.05). DLIR-H had the best noise reduction ability and improved SNR and CNR without distorting the image texture, followed by DLIR-M and ASIR-V 50%. In summary, DLIR can provide a higher image quality at the same dose, enhancing the physicians' diagnostic confidence and improving the diagnostic efficacy of LDCT for lung cancer screening. Background: This study investigated the prognostic value of axillary lymph node (ALN) heterogeneity texture features through 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography/computed tomography (18F-FDG PET/CT) in patients with locally advanced breast cancer (LABC). Methods: We retrospectively analyzed 158 LABC patients with FDG-avid, pathology-proven, metastatic ALN who underwent neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC) and curative surgery. Tumor and ALN texture parameters were extracted from pretreatment 18F-FDG PET/CT using Chang-Gung Image Texture Analysis software. The least absolute shrinkage and selection operator regression was performed to select the most significant predictive texture parameters. The predictive impact of texture parameters was evaluated for both progression-free survival and pathologic NAC response. Results: The median follow-up period of 36.8 months and progression of disease (PD) was observed in 36 patients. In the univariate analysis, ALN textures (minimum standardized uptake value (SUV) (p = 0.026), SUV skewness (p = 0.038), SUV bias-corrected Kurtosis (p = 0.034), total lesion glycolysis (p = 0.011)), tumor textures (low-intensity size zone emphasis (p = 0.045), minimum SUV (p = 0.047), and homogeneity (p = 0.041)) were significant texture predictors. On the Cox regression analysis, ALN SUV skewness was an independent texture predictor of PD (p = 0.016, hazard ratio 2.3, 95% confidence interval 1.16–4.58). Following the traditional total variational denoising model in removing medical image noise with blurred image texture details, among other problems, an adaptive medical image fractional-order total variational denoising model with an improved sparrow search algorithm is proposed in this study. This algorithm combines the characteristics of fractional-order differential operators and total variational models. The model preserves the weak texture region of the image improvement based on the unique amplitude-frequency characteristics of the fractional-order differential operator. The order of the fractional-order differential operator is adaptively determined by the improved sparrow search algorithm using both the sine search strategy and the diversity variation processing strategy, which can greatly improve the denoising ability of the fractional-order differential operator. The experimental results reveal that the model not only achieves the adaptivity of fractional-order total variable differential order, but also can effectively remove noise, preserve the texture structure of the image to the maximum extent, and improve the peak signal-to-noise ratio of the image; it also displays favorable prospects for applications in medical image denoising. As obesity is a serious problem in the human population, overloading of the horse's thoracolumbar region often affects sport and school horses. The advances in using infrared thermography (IRT) to assess the horse's back overload will shortly integrate the IRT-based rider-horse fit into everyday equine practice. This study aimed to evaluate the applicability of entropy measures to select the most informative measures and color components, and the accuracy of rider:horse bodyweight ratio detection. Twelve horses were ridden by each of the six riders assigned to the light, moderate, and heavy groups. Thermal images were taken pre- and post-exercise. For each thermal image, two-dimensional sample (SampEn), fuzzy (FuzzEn), permutation (PermEn), dispersion (DispEn), and distribution (DistEn) entropies were measured in the withers and the thoracic spine areas. Among 40 returned measures, 30 entropy measures were exercise-dependent, whereas 8 entropy measures were bodyweight ratio-dependent. Moreover, three entropy measures demonstrated similarities to entropy-related gray level co-occurrence matrix (GLCM) texture features, confirming the higher irregularity and complexity of thermal image texture when horses worked under heavy riders. An application of DispEn to red color components enables identification of the light and heavy rider groups with higher accuracy than the previously used entropy-related GLCM texture features. Background: Midpalatal suture maturation and ossification status is the basis for appraising maxillary transverse developmental status. Methods: We established a midpalatal suture cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) normalized database of the growth population, including 1006 CBCT files from 690 participants younger than 24 years old. The midpalatal suture region of interest (ROI) labeling was completed by two experienced clinical experts. The CBCT image fusion algorithm and image texture feature analysis algorithm were constructed and optimized. The age range prediction convolutional neural network (CNN) was conducted and tested. Results: The midpalatal suture fusion images contain complete semantic information for appraising midpalatal suture maturation and ossification status during the fast growth and development period. Correlation and homogeneity are the two texture features with the strongest relevance to chronological age. The overall performance of the age range prediction CNN model is satisfactory, especially in the 4 to 10 years range and the 17 to 23 years range, while for the 13 to 14 years range, the model performance is compromised. Conclusions: The image fusion algorithm can help show the overall perspective of the midpalatal suture in one fused image effectively. Furthermore, clinical decisions for maxillary transverse deficiency should be appraised by midpalatal suture image features directly rather than by age, especially in the 13 to 14 years range. Although remote sensing technology has long been used in wetland inventory and monitoring, the accuracy and detail level of wetland maps derived with moderate resolution imagery and traditional techniques have been limited and often unsatisfactory. We explored and evaluated the utility of a newly launched high-resolution, eight-band satellite system (Worldview-2; WV2) for identifying and classifying freshwater deltaic wetland vegetation and aquatic habitats in the Selenga River Delta of Lake Baikal, Russia, using a hybrid approach and a novel application of Indicator Species Analysis (ISA). We achieved an overall classification accuracy of 86.5% (Kappa coefficient: 0.85) for 22 classes of aquatic and wetland habitats and found that additional metrics, such as the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index and image texture, were valuable for improving the overall classification accuracy and particularly for discriminating among certain habitat classes. Our analysis demonstrated that including WV2's four spectral bands from parts of the spectrum less commonly used in remote sensing analyses, along with the more traditional bandwidths, contributed to the increase in the overall classification accuracy by ∼4% overall, but with considerable increases in our ability to discriminate certain communities. The coastal band improved differentiating open water and aquatic (i.e., vegetated) habitats, and the yellow, red-edge, and near-infrared 2 bands improved discrimination among different vegetated aquatic and terrestrial habitats. The use of ISA provided statistical rigor in developing associations between spectral classes and field-based data. Our analyses demonstrated the utility of a hybrid approach and the benefit of additional bands and metrics in providing the first spatially explicit mapping of a large and heterogeneous wetland system. Insulators are important safety devices on high-voltage transmission lines. An insulator inspection system based on UAVs is widely used. Insulator defect detection is performed against two main engineering problems: 1. The scarcity of defect images, which leads to a network overfitting problem. 2. The small object detection, which is caused by the long aerial photography distance, and the low resolution of the insulator defect area pictures. In this study, firstly, the super-resolution reconstruction method is used to augment the dataset, which can not only solve the overfitting problem but also enrich the image texture features and pixel values of defect areas. Secondly, in the process of insulator defect detection, a two-stage cascading method is used. In the first stage, the rotated object detection algorithm is used to realize the object location of insulator strings, and then images of the identified insulators are cropped to reduce the proportion of the background area in defect images. In the second stage, YOLO v5 is used for the detection of insulator caps that are missing defects. The method proposed shows good detection effect on the self-built training set which contains only 85 images captured from real inspection environments. In this study, the effect of different photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD) provided by LEDs (Light Emitting Diodes) and photoperiod on biomass production, morphological traits, photosynthetic performance, sensory attributes, and image texture parameters of indoor cultivated romaine lettuce was evaluated. Two cultivars of lettuce Lactuca sativa var. longifolium namely 'Casual' (Syngenta)—midi romaine lettuce with medium-compact heads—and 'Elizium' (Enza Zaden)—a mini type (Little Gem) with compact heavy heads—were used. PPFD of 160 and 240 µmol m−2 s−1 and photoperiod of 16 and 20 h were applied, and Daily Light Integral (DLI) values were 9.2, 11.5, 13.8, and 17.3 mol m−2 day−1. The experiment lasted 30 days in the Indoor Controlled Environment Agriculture facility. DLI equal to 17.3 mol m−2 per day for cv. 'Casual' and 11.5–17.3 mol m−2 per day for cv. 'Elizium' allowed to obtain a very high fresh weight, 350 and 240 g, respectively, within 30 days of cultivation in an indoor plant production facility. The application of the lowest PPFD 160 µmol m−2 s−1 and 16 h photoperiod (9.2 mol m−2 per day DLI) resulted in the lowest fresh weight, the number of leaves and head circumference. The level of nitrate, even at the lowest DLI, was below the limit imposed by European Community Regulation. The cv. 'Elizium' lettuce grown at PPFD 240 µmol m−2 s−1 and 16 h photoperiod had the highest overall sensory quality. The cv. 'Casual' lettuce grown at PPFD 160 µmol m−2 s−1 and 20 h photoperiod had the lowest sensory quality. The samples subjected to different photoperiod and PPFD were also successively distinguished in an objective and non-destructive way using image features and machine learning algorithms. The average accuracy for the leaf samples of cv. 'Casual' lettuce reached 98.75% and for cv. 'Elizium' cultivar—86.25%. The obtained relationship between DLI and yield, as well as the quality of romaine lettuce, can be used in practice to improve romaine lettuce production in an Indoor Controlled Environment.
