Linker mediated self-assembly of gold nanoparticles is emerging as an interesting strategy for construction of hybrid nanoscale systems with enhanced plasmonic circular dichroism (PCD) signals. Herein, gold nanorods were assembled via DNA linker to investigate the possibility of signal enhancement. Assemblies were characterized by UV–visible, fluorescence, dynamic light scattering and circular dichroism (CD) spectroscopy. Hybridization of complementary strands resulted in PCD signal enhancement, which was further monitored by the increase of real time PicoGreen fluorescence intensity. Impressively, such changes in the real time fluorescence and plasmonic CD responses could be used as a new detection method for ultrasensitive sensors. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
