Aim. To systematically map and identify key knowledge on organizational support for nurses' career planning and development. Design. Scoping review. Methods. Systematic electronic searches were carried out with the CINAHL, PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science databases in May 2022. The searches were limited to scientific, peer-review papers that were published in English from January 2012 to May 2022. Data were extracted and synthetized and are presented in tables and text. The review was conducted following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines. Results. We identified 1,400 papers and 28 met the inclusion criteria. Organizations recognized nurses' career planning and development in relation to the individual's professional development and the organization's need to promote high-quality services and workforce engagement. The organizational support included strategic work to ensure there were adequate resources and purposeful vacancies and a structured framework based on objective qualification criteria and equal assessment. Organizations focused on sharing knowledge, structured career planning, and interpersonal support. Support within the nursing profession and multilayered interprofessional collaboration were also important. Conclusion. Nurses' career planning and development was linked to their personal development and the organization's aims and required support from both fellow nurses and other professionals. Implications for the Nursing Management. Identifying the organizational structures and methods that are needed to support nurses' career planning and development can help nursing management to evaluate and develop strategies that improve the attractiveness of a nursing career and nurses' engagement. Contemporary healthcare for those experiencing mental illness requires healthcare practitioners (HCPs) to effectively incorporate the prescription of exercise in their treatment, in accordance with clinical guidelines. However, there has been a lack of effective implementation of such recommendations. The purpose of this review was to identify barriers to exercise prescription in the treatment of people diagnosed with mental illness as perceived by HCPs. APA PsycINFO, CINAHL, MEDLINE, and PubMed electronic databases were searched for relevant articles published in the period from January 2005 to September 2023. A total of 18 papers were included for thematic synthesis. Four key themes were identified across the qualitative (8), quantitative (6), and mixed method (4) papers, including a lack of knowledge and confidence of HCPs in prescribing exercise; role and responsibility; HCPs' misconceptions of client barriers; and systemic issues impacting exercise prescription practices. A lack of knowledge or confidence was the most common barrier. Some HCPs indicated a desire to develop their skills in exercise prescription, while others indicated a preference for an exercise professional to take responsibility for this aspect of treatment. Systemic barriers were spread across a range of issues, with lack of time, excessive workload, and difficulties accessing qualified staff most commonly cited. This review provides further insight into the barriers to exercise prescription faced by HCPs and makes recommendations regarding how to address these barriers in order to better implement clinical guidelines and thus improve the quality of treatment provided to people diagnosed with a mental illness. Health services research is important in improving health systems' and providers' efficiency and effectiveness. This may require health services to intervene at an individual and community level to address people's complex social issues. An important issue is social connections, which have been identified as a social determinant of health and can help buffer stressful life events. Social support networks can be visualized using eco-maps, a tool that originated in child welfare practices and has been adopted widely by clinicians and researchers. This paper aims to understand where and how eco-maps have been used in health services research. To answer the research questions, this scoping review used the Joanna Briggs Institute guidelines for scoping reviews. In total, 70 studies were included in the scoping review. The authors found that social support denoted in an eco-map does not guarantee the provision of support; however, the dialogue needed to create an eco-map could facilitate conversations about care expectations, identification of vulnerable points or risk factors, and actions to improve family and individual functioning. A significant gap remains in the knowledge and use of eco-maps in identifying population service and resource gaps and how to bridge the knowledge-to-action chasm better. Further exploration is needed to examine how to optimize the application of eco-mapping in the health services context, including generating guidelines, templates, or instructions for implementation. Aim. To review the current literature on the developing role of nursing innovation, specifically, those nurses who have progressed their innovative practice into product development. Design. A scoping review was conducted utilising the Population, Concept, Context framework and the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses extension for Scoping Reviews. Data Sources. An initial search was performed in February 2023 with a repeat search and revision to the review completed in September 2023. Electronic searches of the British Nursing Index, Current Index of Nursing Allied Health Literature, Emerald Insight, National Health Service Knowledge and Library Hub, and Google Scholar™ were undertaken using the terms Nursing AND (new product development) AND (device innovation). Two authors (LS and MS) also undertook hand searching of relevant reference lists. Review Methods. Two authors were involved in the screening process of available and relevant literature (LS and MS) with the third author (FH) available for decision-making in the event of any generated disagreements. Results. We undertook a review of seventeen papers from 274 results. The impetus of nursing innovation, defining the nurse inventor, facilitators to the nurse inventor concept, and barriers to the nurse inventor concept were all identified as themes to be explored. Conclusion. The nurse inventor concept requires further challenge and clarity. Nurses should aim for a consensus of definition, typology, scope of practice, and job planning. Healthcare institutions should acknowledge and explore this novel role in detail, with consideration afforded to how the role is to be specified and integrated into today's nursing practice roles. Safeguarding for healthcare involves working together to protect adults, children, and young people at risk of harm. Despite global research and national guidance outlining health professionals' roles in this regard, there is limited knowledge about the type of strategies used to mobilise safeguarding research to practitioners in England. Our critical interpretive synthesis (CIS) sought to explore how safeguarding knowledge is mobilised to enable practitioners to use research effectively. This synthesis aimed to bridge the theory-practice gap in mobilising safeguarding knowledge to practitioners. Knowledge mobilisation (KMb) is an emerging discipline concerned with moving knowledge across communities to catalyse change. This review aimed to build understanding about how safeguarding knowledge is mobilised for healthcare in England and to synthesise the type of approaches undertaken to protect adults and children from harms, including abuse. A critical interpretive synthesis was undertaken using KMb theory and computer-assisted modelling technologies for secondary thematic analysis of complex literature of relevance, including qualitative research, reviews, and reports. Few papers informed how safeguarding knowledge is mobilised for healthcare in England. Learning from experience dominated the literature in three ways: (i) crisis response, (ii) practice engagement, and (iii) influencing actions (for "best" practice). Embedding safeguarding knowledge and skills in healthcare settings usually followed a crisis response. Learning from experience showed movement between practice engagement and influencing actions for adult and/or child protection. KMb might be useful in supporting the implementation of evidence-based safeguarding for practice. CIS identified a gap in how safeguarding research is mobilised to practitioners for healthcare. KMb theory provided an analytical bridge to computer-assisted modelling of factors associated with moving learning from experience to learning in practice. Future research could build on hybrid synthesising of safeguarding functions and impacts for healthcare, to enable practitioners to protect adults and children from multiple harms, including violence and abuse. Aim. To generate a landscape of the current knowledge in the interventional management and outcomes of purulent skin and soft tissue infections. Design. This study is a scoping review. Methods. Electronic searches were undertaken using CINAHL, Medline, Cochrane Library, British Nursing Index, Science Direct, the National Health Service knowledge and library hub, ClinicalTrials.gov, and MedNar. The population, concept, context framework, and the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses extension for Scoping Reviews were utilised, supporting a rigorous appraisal and synthesis of literature. Data Sources. The initial search and synthesis of literature were completed in January 2022 with repeat searches completed in March 2022 and July 2023. There were no imposed chronological parameters placed on the returned literature. Results. Nineteen papers were reviewed. Incision and drainage with primary closure, needle aspiration, loop drainage, catheter drainage, and suction drainage are viable adjuncts or alternatives to the traditional surgical management of skin and soft tissue abscesses. Conclusion. Despite the empirically favourable alternatives to the incision and drainage technique demonstrated, this does not appear to be driving a change in clinical practice. Future research must now look to mixed and qualitative evidence to understand the causative mechanisms of incision and drainage and its ritualistic practice. Implications. Ritual surgical practices must be challenged if nurses are to improve the treatment and management of this patient group. This will lead to further practice innovation. Impact: This study explored the challenges posed to patients, clinicians, nurses, and stakeholders, resulting from the ritualistic practice of the incision and drainage technique in purulent skin or soft tissue abscesses. Empirically and holistically viable alternatives were identified, impacting all identified entities and recommending a wider holistic study. Reporting Method. Introduction: The present review aimed to establish prevalence rates of anxiety and depression in adults with haematology cancer, with a focus on the differences between patients under treatment and patients under watchful waiting. Method: Five databases (Scopus, Medline, PsycINFO, EThOS, CINAHL) were searched throughout June 2021. Key search terms included haematology cancer, anxiety, depression, in treatment and watchful waiting. Study and sample characteristics, prevalence rates and mean self‐reported scores of anxiety and depression data were extracted. Results: A total of 18 eligible papers were included in the review. Quality appraisal indicated papers were of adequate standard. Depression data from 2720 participants (14.5% under watchful waiting) and anxiety data from 2520 participants (15.9% under watchful waiting) were analysed through subgroup meta‐analyses. The prevalence of anxiety was 34% amongst adults receiving treatment and 24.5% amongst those under watchful waiting. The prevalence of depression amongst adults receiving treatment was 31.3%, significantly higher than 16.1% of adults under watchful waiting. Conclusion: Overall, adults with haematology cancer were at greater risk of experiencing anxiety and depression than the general population, with greatest risk in those under treatment. Psychological distress (including depression and anxiety) is common in the first years of cancer diagnosis but can differ by country and region. The aim of the present paper was to review the prevalence of psychological distress among cancer patients in the Southeast Asia (SEA) region. A systematic literature search was carried out using several databases (i.e., PubMed, PsychARTICLES, Embase, CINAHI, Web of Sciences, Plus, Scopus, and AHMED). Papers originally published in English language were taken into consideration if they (i) were published from 2010 to 2021 and (ii) reported the prevalence of psychological distress among patients with different types of cancer. A total of 23 studies met the inclusion criteria. The most frequently employed psychometric instrument for anxiety and depression screening was the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS). The prevalence of anxiety (ranging from 7% to 88%) was wider than that of depression (ranging from 3% to 65.5%) among patients with different types of cancer and living in various countries in the SEA region. The overall prevalence rate of psychological distress among cancer patients from the SEA region was not fundamentally very different from that of general populations. These findings provide useful information for health professionals and cancer patients to understand the negative role of psychological distress in quality of life and health. The research findings demonstrate the importance of counselling for psychological distress among cancer patients as means of effectively resolving their psychological problems and ultimately improving the quality of oncology medical care. Clinical recommendations for cancer management should incorporate the early identification of (and therapy for) psychological distress, as well as their monitoring during treatment. This integrative review aims to evaluate the experiences of health and social care practitioners with regard to how they exercise professional curiosity in child protection practice. Professional curiosity gained significant currency following the Munro Review of Child Protection (2010) in England, as a means of seeking clarity on what is happening within a family. However, a recurrent finding from child safeguarding practice reviews is that practitioners continue to struggle to exercise curiosity. This is evident within both the United Kingdom and international literature, although descriptors for the concept may differ. This study attempted to identify facilitators and barriers to applying professional curiosity to provide a greater understanding of this theoretical concept. Title and abstract review of 1428 articles identified from databases and 11 from other sources resulted in 52 papers for full‐text review. The quality of each article was appraised using the Critical Appraisal Skills Programme tool for qualitative studies, the Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool (MMAT) for quantitative/mixed method studies and the Joanna Briggs framework for theoretical/opinion papers. Key findings were recorded in the Summary Table of Literature Reviewed. Data extracts were thematically analysed. Twenty‐four papers predominantly from the UK, but also from Australia, Italy, Sweden and USA formed the data set. Overarching themes that emerged from the thematic analysis included: noticing dissonance, emitting curiosity, constructing meaning, facilitators, individual professional challenges, organisational and macro‐level influences and conceptual development. This review demonstrated that professional curiosity is multifaceted and involves a whole system approach, from empowered, knowledgeable and competent frontline practitioners to creative, innovative and empathic organisations, that value staff contributions and place the child's best interests at the forefront of service development. Older carers, aged 65 or over, may find it difficult to balance caring while maintaining their own health and quality of life (QoL). For older carers, especially, established approaches to separately identifying, assessing and addressing carers' and care‐recipients' needs, may not fully consider the interwoven nature of caregiving relationships and the ways in which community‐based social care services may impact the QoL of both parties. The purpose of this scoping review is to identify and synthesise what is already known about the QoL of older carers and care‐recipients, considered together, which we refer to as 'dyadic QoL'; both in general, and with regard to the impact of community‐based social care. We searched 16 electronic databases and grey literature in October and November 2020. A total 822 items were identified and reviewed based on the inclusion criteria: focusing on older carers and care‐recipients from a dyadic perspective and their QoL or well‐being, published since 2000 and in English. Fourteen papers were thematically analysed, and the findings were presented under two themes. First, the value of applying an overarching conceptual framework of 'interdependence theory' in understanding dyadic QoL, including two broad approaches: dyadic data analysis and the dynamics of caring relationships. Second, a number of papers highlighted the role of support from family, friends and neighbours and community‐based social care services in promoting QoL outcomes of caring dyads. This review emphasised that considering the QoL of carers and care‐recipients, together, would potentially improve the understanding of care needs, provision of care services and QoL outcomes. However, there is limited and fragmentary evidence about dyadic QoL or the impact of social care services on dyadic QoL outcomes. Aims: This article reports the results of a scoping review to identify initiatives for improving recruitment and retention of nurses in health care and ascertain their effectiveness. Background: The global shortage of nurses has results in greater competition for vacant posts and an increased need to retain existing post holders. While there are a large number of publications discussing ways to improve recruitment and retention, the effectiveness of these needs to be established. Evaluation: Thirteen papers met the inclusion criteria. There was no literature identified focusing on recruitment and only one paper reported a formal evaluation of a retention initiative. Key issues: Five themes summarized the initiatives for retaining nurses: leadership and support, ongoing professional development, recognition, work environment and flexible scheduling. Conclusion: While strategies have been proposed to retain nurses, there is a dearth of evidence supporting the effectiveness of these. Implications for Nursing Management: Although there is a lack of evaluations of retention strategies, the review identified a number of initiatives that warrant consideration. With the launch of the National Health Service People Plan in England in 2021, which is recommending initiatives identified in this review without robust evidence, an integrated programme of research evaluating this is recommended. Vulnerable communities (including people from refugee, Indigenous, culturally and linguistically diverse, and low socioeconomic backgrounds) represent the most at-risk populations facing inequities and negative health, economic, and social outcomes. The recent COVID-19 pandemic both highlighted and fuelled these disparities. Community gardening has emerged as a community-based solution to address these inequities, yet the research literature has largely considered outcomes for the general population rather than those with the most need. This paper represents the first systematic review to summarise the evidence on the broad impact of community gardening on outcomes for vulnerable populations. A systematic search of 13 databases (PubMed, Medline, Scopus, ScienceDirect, Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature, PsycINFO, Web of Science, Academic Search Complete, Education Source, Education Resources Information Center, Psychology and Behavioral Science Collection, SocINDEX, and Allied Health and Complementary Medicine Database) for English language articles from 1985 to 2022 was conducted. There were 33 studies identified where females were substantially overrepresented in the studies compared to males, and the main criteria for vulnerability included low socioeconomic-status and culturally diverse populations. Findings revealed that community gardening provides a wide range of benefits for vulnerable populations, with social connection, health, education, and nutrition being the more commonly cited. A relative emphasis on benefits of social connections, education, and nutrition is apparent for vulnerable populations in comparison to reviews considering the general population. The quality of studies was evaluated as moderate with little information provided about program characteristics. These shortcomings reduce the understanding of what characteristics are most likely to result in improvements and limit the capacity of practitioners to translate research into policy and practice for vulnerable communities. Background & Objective. Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) is the most common reproductive endocrinopathy in women of reproductive age with many associated metabolic symptoms, in particular hyperinsulinemia, insulin resistance, and a high lifetime risk of type 2 diabetes mellitus. The effects of time-restricted eating on metabolic profiles have been investigated in many endocrinopathies, but there is minimal data for PCOS. Here we explore the potential role of time-restricted eating in the nonpharmacological management of PCOS. Designs & Methods. Medline, CINAHL, EMBASE, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library were searched for controlled trials of effects of time-restricted eating regimens on insulin levels in patients with PCOS. A further narrative discussion on the time-restricted eating in PCOS was conducted. Results. 2662 papers were identified with 37 selected for full-text review and one paper meeting criteria for inclusion. Ramadan fasting was the only time-restricted eating regimen trialled in this population with no strong evidence of a significant effect on insulin levels. Conclusion. As the systematic review retrieved only one study investigating time-restricted eating to reduce insulin in patients with PCOS, there is no evidence to suggest that this intervention is effective. From the narrative review, based on studies in other patient groups, time-restricted eating could improve insulin resistance in those with PCOS; however, well-designed studies are required before this intervention can be recommended. Introduction. Ethiopia has made significant efforts to enhance family planning services despite variations in the community's use of modern contraception in different parts of the country. Various studies have reported the proportion and determinant factors of adolescents' contraceptive uptake in Ethiopia. These studies are not consistent in terms of size, scope, and geographic coverage, and the results need to be systematically collated to inform policies. Therefore, this review was aimed at analyzing the findings of those primary studies to obtain more representative evidence of adolescents' contraceptive uptake in Ethiopia. Methods. Five databases (MEDLINE via PubMed, Google Scholar, Scopus, ScienceDirect, and CINAHL) were searched for papers published from January 2000 up to June 2022 in English. Of thirty eligible studies, eight papers were included in this meta-analysis. Between-study heterogeneity was evaluated by the forest plot and inconsistency index ( I 2 ). A random-effects model was used to calculate the pooled estimates of adolescents' contraceptive uptake. Results. The overall pooled proportion of adolescents' contraceptive uptake was 40% ( I 2 = 99.70 , p ≤ 0.001 ; 95 % CI = 19 , 61). Adolescents' usage of contraception was influenced by a number of factors: individual-, sociocultural-, knowledge- (about contraceptive methods), and healthcare service-related factors. Individual-related factors include the educational status of adolescents, being of young age, and the income status of adolescents' families. Sociocultural-related factors comprise discussion with the family/relatives, parent disapproval and pressure from partners, and being married or having a partner. Healthcare service-related factors include the availability of youth clubs and inconvenient service hours for SRH services. Knowing contraceptive methods and SRH services was also positively associated with adolescents' contraceptive utilization. Conclusions. The proportion of adolescents who used contraception in Ethiopia was 40%. Adolescents' use of contraceptives was influenced by a variety of factors: individual-, sociocultural-, healthcare-, and knowledge-related factors. Hence, integrated interventions targeted at tackling barriers to contraceptive uptake may be helpful to improve adolescents' contraceptive utilization in Ethiopia. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction. This review sought to synthesise the qualitative evidence pertaining to the experiences of myeloma patients and relatives of work, given the distinct symptom burden and illness trajectory. Methods and Designs. CINAHL, Medline, Web of Science, PsychINFO, SocIndex were searched on 22-Apr-2022. No limiters were used for language or date of publication. CASP was used for critical appraisal. An integrative synthesis was conducted to inductively construct analytic themes PROSPERO CRD42022323137. Results. 34 articles were included, published from 2004 to 2022. Nineteen were assessed as having low risk of bias, and four with moderate risk of bias. The following four themes were derived from analysis of the papers: (i) side effects, medicines, and stigma; (ii) relationships; (iii) creation and maintenance of identity; (iv) privilege and income. Conclusion. Myeloma impacts the engagement of patients and relatives in paid and unpaid work, yet very little is currently known on how the cancer impacts these important interdependent systems. Addressing workplace stigma, understanding the role of workplace relationships, the construction of self through work, interpreting data through a lens of life-course and, privilege offer helpful starting points. Domestic abuse is a worldwide public health and social issue which impacts the health and wellbeing of those experiencing abuse and their families. People living with a life-limiting illness are at increased risk of domestic abuse because they are often frail, isolated, and dependent on others. Little is known about domestic abuse and the coexistence of life-limiting illness and existing support for those experiencing or at risk of abuse. A scoping review was conducted to identify factors that shape and characterise experiences of adults with a life-limiting illness affected by domestic abuse and the health and social care practitioners and other organisations that support them. The Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) methodology and checklist for Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta Analyses-Extension for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA-ScR) were applied. Five databases were systematically searched from 2000 to 2021: MEDLINE; CINAHL; PsycINFO; Social Sciences Citation Index (Web of Science); and ProQuest Dissertations and Global. Twenty-one papers met the inclusion criteria. Most studies were conducted in North America, with female participants living with cancer, and conducted in health and community settings. There were no studies involving third sector organisations. A range of abusive behaviours was reported resulting in missed medical appointments, delays in screening leading to late diagnosis, and palliative rather than curable treatment. Abuse also impacted on the physical, emotional, and psychological wellbeing of the person experiencing the abuse, which increased stress levels and could have a detrimental effect on their health. Identifying domestic abuse within the context of life-limiting illness was reported to be challenging for health and social care professionals, as was responding to and managing a disclosure. Further research is needed to address existing knowledge in order to inform policy and practice to identify and manage domestic abuse where it coexists with life-limiting illness. Health and social care professionals' competencies have traditionally been separated because of the different aims of the two professions. These competencies need to be integrated, to make sure that seamless services are provided that meet the often complex needs of patients and clients in a coordinated and timely way. The aim of this integrative review was to identify, describe and synthetise previous studies on integrated competencies in health and social care. Electronic literature searches were carried out on the CINAHL, ProQuest, PsycInfo, PubMed, Scopus and SocIndex databases for peer‐reviewed scientific papers that were published in English between 1 January 2007 and 31 December 2019. This identified 3,231 papers, after duplicates were removed, and 18 focused on the integration of social workers' competencies with health care. Other types of integration were not found. The value added by integrating social workers' competencies with health care focused on engaging working orientation, improving communication with family members, increasing understanding of service resources and mastering successful discharge procedures so that they met comprehensive, complex health and well‐being needs. Social workers added value when they worked with multi‐professional teams, but there were challenges to integrating competencies and these were related to professional collaboration and fragmented leadership. In future, more attention needs to be paid to diversifying and optimising the integration of professional health and social care competencies that meet clients' and patients' care and service needs. Co‐methodological working is gaining increasing traction in healthcare, but studies with older people have been slower to develop. Our aim was to investigate how and how well older people have been engaged in healthcare intervention design, development or delivery using co‐methodologies. We conducted a systematic search of four electronic databases to identify international literature published between 2009 and November 2019. We included peer‐reviewed empirical research of any design. Three authors screened papers. Our review is reported in accordance with the Joanna Briggs Institute manual for scoping reviews, we have referred to the preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta‐analyses statement. We data extracted to a bespoke spreadsheet and used the Co:Create Co‐production Matrix to guide quality appraisal. Included studies (n = 48) were diverse in nature of interventions, co‐methodologies and reporting. We offer a narrative summary of included papers. Establishing how older people were engaged in co‐methodological work was largely straightforward. How well this was done was more challenging, however we have identified gems of good practice and offered directions for future practice. The Co:Create Co‐Production Matrix was the best fit for evaluating papers, however it is not intended as a measure per se. In essence we argue that notions of 'best' and 'scores' are an oxymoron in co‐methodological working, what is important that: (a) researchers embrace these methods, (b) incremental change is the way forward, (c) researchers need to do what is right for people and purpose and (d) have time to consider and articulate why they are choosing this approach and how best this can be achieved for their particular situation. People with dementia and their care partners report a lack of support, treatment, and information, fragmented services, and a lack of inclusion in decisions about their care. Care planning may address these issues; however, there is scarce literature on the process or benefits of care planning for people with dementia. This review describes the literature on care planning for community-dwelling people with dementia and their care partners. A systematic scoping methodology was followed to identify the research questions, identify relevant documents, select relevant documents, chart the data, and collate, summarise, and report the results. 31 full-text documents published between 2010 and May 2020 were identified and reviewed. Seven were guidelines, seven were expert opinion pieces, 11 were intervention studies, and six were descriptive studies. The topics and process of care planning varied depending on the service context (e.g., memory clinic, home care, and primary care). Care planning was presented as a component of case management in 15 papers. Six of the 11 intervention studies reported positive outcomes, one showed no improvement, and one did not evaluate outcomes for people with dementia or their care partners. Of the six with positive outcomes, four evaluated care planning in the context of care management. There is limited evidence that care planning alone improves outcomes for people with dementia and their care partners. It is unclear whether it may have benefits when combined with care management. Domestic violence (DV) is a prominent social problem involving upwards of 30% of women and in most cases, it is often the emergency department (ED) that is the first point of call. This qualitative review aimed to explore and describe ED nurses experiences of DV presentations. A search of the qualitative literature was undertaken between 2000 and 2019. This review was performed using a three‐stage process of thematic synthesis. For papers to be included each paper must have described a qualitative account of ED nurses' experiences of DV presentations. Ten papers met the inclusion criteria. Three themes emerged from the papers reviewed—feeling devastated in a world of helplessness and hopelessness; the anger of indifference; and grieving the pain and suffering. These included feelings of anger, rage, depression, guilt, helplessness, sadness, hopelessness, and cynicism. In conclusion, the emotional burden of care in supporting and protecting victims of DV can be immense for the nurses involved. This can lead to ED nurses distancing themselves from the patient as a means of emotional self‐protection as well as increasing compassion fatigue as a result of secondary vicarious trauma. Aim: The aim of this paper is to critically evaluate the literature investigating the impact of nurse leadership education on clinical practice. Background: Effective leadership is vital for high‐quality patient care. Leadership education is designed to support nurses to develop the appropriate skills and behaviors to become clinical leaders. However, to date, the impact of such education on subsequent clinical practice is unclear. Evaluation: An integrative review was conducted. Ten papers were included related to the experiences of nurses undertaking leadership education. Key issue: Analysis of the included papers indicated that leadership education contributed to improving clinical practice in two ways. These two key themes were; impact on the individual and impact on others. Conclusion: While there is a plethora of literature reviewing nurse leadership and clinical practice, there is a gap in understanding how nurse leadership education can contribute to changed practice. Implications for Nursing Management: Nurse managers can use this information to guide future leadership education programs to ensure that they promote positive work environments and high‐quality care that improves clinical outcomes. Introduction: With rapid changes in treatments for colorectal cancer (CRC), qualitative research into CRC survivorship requires greater synthesis. This paper aims to fill this gap through a systematic review (PROSPERO CRD42019131576) and thematic synthesis of the qualitative literature on survivorship experiences across early‐stage and advanced CRC survivors. Methods: CINAHL, Embase, MEDLINE, PsycINFO and PubMed were searched for qualitative CRC survivorship papers. Titles, abstracts and full texts were screened. Included articles (n = 81) underwent data extraction, CASP qualitative bias ratings and thematic synthesis. Results: Bowel dysfunction caused functional limitations and negative quality of life (QoL), while stomas posed threats to body image and confidence. Physical symptoms hindered return to work, increasing financial burdens. Survivors' unmet needs included information regarding symptom expectations and management, and ongoing support throughout recovery. Advanced and early‐stage survivors shared similar experiences. Advanced survivors struggled with fear of cancer recurrence/progression and feelings of powerlessness. Functional limitations, financial impacts and sexuality in advanced survivors were underexplored areas. Conclusion: CRC and its treatments impact survivors' QoL in all areas. A coordinated supportive care response is required to address survivors' unmet needs. Future qualitative studies should explore advanced CRC subpopulations, treatment‐specific impacts on QoL and long‐term (>5 years) impacts on CRC survivors. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: Cancer patients and caregivers have myriad unmet needs which can have detrimental consequences on their psychosocial wellbeing. This systematic review aims to identify the unmet supportive care needs of immigrant and native Chinese cancer patients and caregivers. Methods: We systematically searched various electronic databases (e.g. Scopus, CINAHL, PsycInfo, etc.) from the earliest date available until January 2018. Additional studies were identified through reference lists and citation tracking. Eligibility criteria included: (a) qualitative, quantitative and/or mixed methods studies published in English; (b) immigrant and native Chinese cancer patients and/or caregivers (age ≥18 years); (c) unmet needs and/or their correlates. Studies were assessed for their risk of bias, and a narrative synthesis of findings was performed. Results: Forty‐seven papers from 45 studies met eligibility criteria. The most prevalent area of unmet needs was health system and information. Patients most commonly desired one member of the hospital to talk to about all aspects of their care. Caregivers preferred information about the patient's prognosis and likely outcome. Anxiety was most commonly associated with higher levels of health system and information needs. Conclusion: Chinese patients and caregivers experience a range of unmet health system and information needs, which differ depending on their stage along the cancer trajectory. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In the United Kingdom (UK), link worker social prescribing has emerged as an option to improve long‐term condition management and address primary care patients' non‐medical needs by linking patients with community‐based activities and support. Social prescribing is a complex, heterogenous intervention, and there is currently no taxonomy of components to guide its implementation and evaluation. This study aimed to identify and categorise the components of link worker social prescribing schemes in the United Kingdom. A scoping review of peer‐reviewed literature was conducted. Six databases were used to identify papers that met inclusion criteria. Eligible articles were original research studies in the United Kingdom describing interventions that included (1) initial referral of adults with chronic physical health conditions and/or unmet social needs from primary care to a link worker or equivalent role, (2) consultation with a link worker or equivalent role and (3) referral to a community‐based or government service. Of the 1078 articles identified, 32 met study eligibility criteria, representing 22 social prescribing schemes. We drew from the template for intervention description and replication (TIDieR) to identify, organise and report intervention components. We found wide variations in geography, target populations and intervention components such as activities and procedures conducted by primary care staff and link workers, organisational and staffing configurations and use of tools and financing approaches to facilitate adoption. Intervention components are summarised into a taxonomy to guide future research, policy and practice efforts in addition to supporting standardised intervention reporting. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Increased rates of domestic violence (DV) have been associated with events such as public holidays, seasonal variations, disasters and economic crises. Sport is seen as gendered, exemplifying hegemonic masculinity and associated violence, with the link between sporting culture and violence against women well recognised. This paper reports on a systematic review of empirical research literature exploring the link between major sporting events and incidence of DV. We searched MEDLINE, CINAHL, PsycINFO, SPORTDiscus and Proquest Central databases from inception to December 2020 for quantitative studies examining major sports events and reports of DV using a pre–post comparison design. Study quality was assessed using the Kmet quality assessment tool. The review identified 1445 records following duplicate removal. Once screened and assessed for eligibility, 12 studies met the inclusion criteria. Results are presented qualitatively due to the heterogeneity across studies. Most studies originated in North America and the United Kingdom, used police records as their data source for measuring incidences of DV and few looked beyond the day of the sports event for recorded incidences of DV. Studies reviewed suggested that there is an association between certain major sports events and increased reporting of DV. However, studies' findings conflicted with regards to whether increases were associated with contact sports, the rivalry between competing teams, whether the events were emotionally salient and whether alcohol was a contributing factor. In conclusion, there is limited research globally. Heterogeneity and conflicting findings mean that more research is needed to understand the associations and inform community prevention/interventions to address DV. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper describes the development and preliminary evaluation of a novel participant‐led video (PLV) intervention to support people with disability (PWD) and cognitive and communication impairments to communicate their needs and preferences to their disability support workers. The PLV intervention was designed following a scoping literature review and workshop with PWD and close others. Subsequently, it was piloted with five primary participants with acquired brain injury and cognitive and communication impairments, five close other supporters and five facilitators. An independent mixed methods evaluation of the pilot was conducted with participants, close others and facilitators. All pilot evaluation participants reported high levels of satisfaction with the PLV intervention (mean ratings: primary participants 4.5/5.0; supporters 5.0/5.0; facilitators 4.8/5.0). When primary participants and their supporters were asked to rate how likely they were to recommend the PLV intervention, responses were extremely positive with the mean rating exceeding eight on a 10‐point scale. Qualitative analysis of interview data revealed the PLV to be a person‐centred experience for primary participants that was structured around sense of self and included having a voice and taking control in directing their lives, personal growth through participation and feeling validated through the experience. The production and use of PLV training resources has much potential to improve the delivery of support and maximise support outcomes by enabling people with cognitive and communication impairments to have choice and control, set their own goals and direct their supports. Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) are the leading cause of death worldwide and they disproportionally affect people living in disadvantaged communities. Nurse‐led behaviour change interventions have shown great promise in preventing CVD. However, knowledge regarding the impact and nature of such interventions in disadvantaged communities is limited. This review aimed to address this knowledge gap. A six‐stage scoping review framework developed by Arksey and O'Malley, with revisions by Levac et al., was used. The search process was guided by the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta‐Analyses‐Extension for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA‐ScR). Three electronic databases were searched (PUBMED/MEDLINE, CINAHL Plus, and Cochrane CENTRAL), and included studies were analysed using Braun and Clarke's 'Thematic Analysis' approach. Initial searches yielded 952 papers and 30 studies were included in the review following duplicate, title/abstract, and full‐text screening. The included studies indicate that nurse‐led behaviour change primary prevention interventions in disadvantaged areas are largely effective; albeit the considerable variety of intervention approaches, study populations and outcome measures used to date make it difficult to ascertain this. Other identified key areas in the promotion of nurse‐led behaviour change included tailoring interventions to specific populations, providing adequate training for nurses, overcoming patient access difficulties and encouraging patient engagement. Overall, the findings indicate that nurse‐led behaviour change interventions for high‐risk CVD patients in disadvantaged areas show much promise, although there is considerable variety in the interventions employed and studied to date. Aim: The aim of this study is to synthesize available literature describing the development, implementation and evaluation of a Professional Practice Model. Background: A Professional Practice Model is an overarching theory‐based framework that depicts nursing values and defines the structure and process of nursing care. No research has synthesized available literature on this topic in recent times. Evaluation: A review of English language papers was published from 2015 to 2022. Fourteen studies met the inclusion criteria. Key Issues: All studies highlighted the importance of having a Professional Practice Model that reflects nursing care activities and resonates with nurses across an organization. This is achieved through strong leadership and clinical nurse involvement during the development, implementation and evaluation phases. In addition, a model should be adapted to keep up to date with scientific changes relevant to nursing. Conclusions: This review adds to the body of knowledge on the development, implementation and evaluation of a Professional Practice Model. Future research exploring the benefit of a Professional Practice Model on patient outcomes would be useful. Implications for nursing management: The key elements of a Professional Practice Model including six components and theoretical foundation have been summarized in this review. Nurse leaders should consider these key elements in the creation of a Professional Practice Model. Introduction: Although there is growing evidence the Clinical Nurse Specialist role makes a difference to patient care, the full value of this service may not be always appreciated with current models not meeting the needs of those with cancer. The primary aim of this integrative literature review was to evaluate outcomes associated with the role of the Clinical Nurse Specialist in cancer care. The secondary aim was to identify the components of the Clinical Nurse Specialist role in cancer care from the included papers in the literature review. Methods: An integrative literature review using a systematic approach was adopted. Literature searches were undertaken in four databases and supplemented with a search in the grey literature and reference lists of included papers. Searches were limited to January 2009‐July 2019 and those written in the English language. Three reviewers independently completed the searches and reviewed the papers before reaching a consensus. Results: Fourteen eligible research papers were identified. Evaluations were predominately positive with the role contributing to improving patient outcomes with regards psychological support, information provision, symptom management, service coordination and patient satisfaction. Conclusion: The findings of this literature review firmly establish the Clinical Nurse Specialist as a valuable member of the multidisciplinary team in enhancing cancer care services. Background. With the prevalence of mental issues worldwide, more and more people are suffering from psychological torture. Mental Health Gap Action Program (mhGAP) has been introduced to improve the life quality of humans. Objectives. To explore and synthesize evidence of participants' experience of mental health first aid (MHFA) training course. Method. Peer-reviewed qualitative evidence was systematically reviewed and thematically synthesized. Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL), Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System Online (MEDLINE), Psychological Information (PsycINFO), PubMed, Psych ARTICLES, Web of Science, Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI), and National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) databases were searched for the inception of the present study. The study's quality was appraised using the Critical Appraisal Checklist for Qualitative Research of Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) appraisal tool. All the participants who have attended the MHFA training course (excluding instructors) setting were included. Results. Six papers published between 2005 and 2019 were included for thematic synthesis. The review indicated that MHFA had been a positive experience for participants. Conclusions. MHFA courses can provide participants with professional knowledge of mental health counseling and improve their knowledge, practice, and attitudes towards their patients. Background: Individuals diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) without intellectual disability (ID) may have advanced mental reasoning; however, symptomology may vary within the population. Possible symptomology includes communication problems, difficulty relating to people, things, and events, and sensory sensitivity. Current concepts in determining health behavior are not applicable to the ASD without ID population. Aim: The aim of this analysis is to define the concept of egocentric norm in the context of health‐based decisions of adults diagnosed with ASD without ID and to support improved nursing practice with this population. Design: The Walker and Avant approach was used. Model, borderline, and contrary cases are offered. Data Source: Literature search yielded 47 peer reviewed papers that were included in the analysis. Review Methods: Uses of the concept were reviewed, following the Walker and Avant approach. Results: Egocentric norm is defined as an individual's ability to perceive, adapt, and respond to information and potential consequences of personal health behavior based on self‐evaluation and the immediate environment with limited regard to peer and family influence. Aim: To identify predictors and consequences of violence or aggression events against nurses and nursing students in different work contexts. Background: Workplace violence against nurses and nursing students is a very common and widespread phenomenon. Actions to manage or prevent violent events could be implemented knowing the risk factors and consequences. However, there is a lack of systematic reviews that summarize knowledge on the predictors and consequences of workplace violence. Evaluation: A scoping review was conducted using electronic databases including APA PsycInfo, CINAHL, Cochrane, Ovid Medline, PubMed and Scopus. Key issues: After full text analysis, 87 papers were included in the current scoping review. Risk factors of horizontal violence were grouped into 'personal' and 'Environmental and organizational', and for violence perpetrated by patients into 'personal', 'Environmental and organizational' and 'Characteristics of the perpetrators'. Conclusions: The results of this scoping review uncover problems that often remain unaddressed, especially where these episodes are very frequent. Workplace violence prevention and management programmes are essential to counter it. Implications for Nursing Management: The predictors and the consequents identified constitute the body of knowledge necessary for nurse managers to develop and implement policy and system actions to effectively manage or prevent violent events. There is a dearth of research on how negative religious attitudes towards LGBTQ people inform professional practice. This paper reports on a scoping review of 70 selected studies from 25 different countries. It explores key issues and knowledge gaps regarding the delivery of services to LGBTQ adults by religious healthcare, social care and social work organisations and/or practitioners with faith‐based objections to LGBTQ people and their lives. The review identified four main themes: (1) a close connection between religious affiliation and negative attitudes towards LGBTQ people, among both students and professionals; (2) a heightening effect of religiosity, particularly among Christian and Muslim practitioners/students; (3) educators' religious attitudes informing curriculum design and delivery, and some highly religious students resisting and/or feeling oppressed by LGBTQ‐inclusivity, if present; (4) examples of practice concerns raised by professionals and lay LGBTQ people. Background. Chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) is a highly prevalent disease associated with poor quality of life. In this paper, we appraised the role of acupuncture in the treatment of CRS. Methods. Electronic databases were searched for randomized controlled clinical trials (RCTs) that examined the role of acupuncture in CRS. The primary outcome measures included posttreatment CRS severity, as measured by the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) and Total Effective Rate (TER). The risk of bias and quality of evidence were evaluated according to the Cochrane Collaboration's risk-of-bias tool and GRADE tool, respectively. Results. Evidence from the RCTs (n = 10) suggested that acupuncture as a monotherapy or adjunctive therapy to conventional treatment was associated with significant improvements in VAS, TER, and quality of life when compared with conventional treatments for CRS. However, there was a similar incidence of adverse events. The risk of bias was unclear and the quality of evidence for each finding was generally moderate to low. Conclusions. Acupuncture as a stand-alone or adjunctive treatment for CRS was associated with clinical symptom improvement and better quality of life, without any risk for serious adverse events. However, the high clinical heterogeneity of the included RCTs and overall moderate-to-low quality of evidence necessitates rigorous, well-designed trials to confirm these findings. The aim of this paper was to use the Walker and Avant method of concept analysis to evaluate the concept of instrumental support in the context of hospital to home care transitions. Findings from this concept analysis suggest three defining attributes of instrumental support: informal support providers, tangible support, and unmet personal needs. Antecedents identified: a strong and supportive social network, an independently functioning adult, an illness resulting in hospitalization, a change in functional status, and the patient being discharged home from the hospital. Consequences of not having adequate instrumental support: unsuccessful recovery at home, increased risk for hospital readmission, decline in physical functioning, health complications, and increased risk of mortality. Empirical referents: patient's report of successful recovery, returning to an independent level of functioning, and the lack of hospital readmission or health complication. A model and a contrary case study were developed to provide examples of clinical cases related to instrumental support. Recommendations related to clinical practice include evaluating the availability/adequacy of instrumental support before hospital discharge and including the identified instrumental support person in the discharge planning process. The COVID‐19 pandemic has led to the closure or reduction in support services for family carers, resulting in increased social isolation and stress for this population. The current scoping review aimed to identify the impact of COVID‐19 upon carers and support provided for them during the pandemic. Four online databases (CINAHL, Medline, PsycINFO and PubMed) were systematically searched on 16th December 2020 and updated on 16th July 2021 for articles written in English and published after January 2020, focused on the carer and the impact of COVID‐19. Google scholar and reference lists of relevant papers were checked, and key authors were contacted for further relevant information. The database searches identified 976 citations, which resulted in 670 unique articles following the removal of duplicates. Title and abstract screening identified 63 articles for full‐text review, 11 of which were subsequently excluded, leaving 52 articles which were subject to inductive thematic analysis. Four key themes were identified. Whilst a number of issues were identified that were exacerbated by the pandemic, others directly resulting from it were revealed. Few studies discussed support measures for carers and only one trial evaluated an intervention. This review identifies the impact of COVID‐19 on carers, but there is a dearth of evidence to inform appropriate tailored support. Governments need to identify carers as a priority group in social care reform and commission co‐produced, evidence and experience informed pathways to reinstate support services, potentially modelled on pandemic plans following the example currently being considered for the paid healthcare workforce. Case management is a complex intervention aimed at addressing a variety of health needs of people in their social environment. Case management for people with dementia is often poorly defined and insufficiently described. The crucial process steps are often not well understood. We aim to map and compare the key components, processes and contextual factors of case management programmes for dementia and to explore aspects of the interventions' generalisability. Our search covered the databases PubMed, CINAHL, Cochrane and GeroLit, as well as policy papers from international organisations. We included qualitative, quantitative and mixed‐methods studies in the English or German language that was published between 1999 and 2020. The programmes were analysed according to programme characteristics, case management intervention and the structural and processing conditions. We identified 67 studies dealing with 25 programmes. Approximately half of the programmes were investigated in randomised controlled trials, two programmes used a mixed‐methods design and the remaining were the subject of pre‐post cohort studies. Participants in the studies were predominantly dyads of people with dementia and their informal caregivers. About half of the programmes reported a theoretical framework. All the programmes were derived from case management approaches or referred to such approaches. Despite huge differences in implementation, all the programmes covered the case management steps. In 14 out of 25 programmes, case management was carried out without additional intervention, the other programmes provided mainly education and training for informal caregivers. Costs of the case management interventions were stated in more than half of the programmes.The effectiveness and generalisability of dementia‐specific case management interventions could be enhanced if the framework introduced in the review was used in the future by policy, practice and research. Aim(s): To report review findings into interventions used to educate the health and social care workforce on the experiences and needs of LGBT+ older adults. Background: Research demonstrates that inequalities in outcomes on health and social well‐being for LGBT+ older adults are perpetuated by the cumulative disadvantages from discrimination and social exclusion throughout the life course and a lack of culturally competent workforce. Methods: A systematic search of peer‐reviewed papers published before February 2020 was conducted in electronic databases. The search resulted in a screening of 2,509 papers with nine matching the inclusion criteria, which were rated using the MERSQI quality measure. Results: Studies demonstrated some positive outcomes of interventions, especially an increase in knowledge, but less so in skills and attitudes. Discussion: More robust designs such as randomized controlled trials, the use of standardized measures and a focus more on the longitudinal impact of educational interventions could improve the quality of study designs. Conclusion(s): Diversification of intervention content and patient and public involvement in the design, delivery and evaluation of educational interventions could improve efforts and have a more sustained impact on LGBT+ ageing inequalities. Aim: To explore 'missed care' in relation to primary and community settings, including nursing homes, and to build an understanding of implications for patients, public, politicians and policymakers. Background: Missed care occurs when any aspect of required patient care is omitted or delayed. Little attention has examined missed care in primary, community and nursing home settings. Methods: Systematic review of the literature. Searches were conducted of PubMed, CINAHL, Google Scholar (July 2018). The quality of empirical studies was appraised using CASP and SURE tools. Results: The search identified 15 metrics papers (2004–2019) and eight empirical papers (2015–2018) (five studies). Empirical studies were rated as good quality. Missed care impacts on safety in community/primary care contexts and differs from acute care. Causes of missed care include acuity, complexity of cases, volume of care and organisational factors. Metrics have been adapted to community/nursing home settings but not in a standardised way. Tools are required to evaluate missed care within a culture of personal reflection and quality improvement. Conclusion: The prominence of missed acute care should not distract from its impact in primary, community and nursing home settings. Nurse leaders should consider causes for missed care, and how it is conceptualized and evaluated. Background and Purpose. Stroke represents one of the most important causes of morbidity (Just over hundred million patients with disabling of ongoing effects of stroke at a given time, globally) and mortality (the second leading cause of death) worldwide. Innovative system biology-based approach is likely to increase the understanding of the underpinning of acute stroke promise to enhance stroke prevention, acute treatment, and neurorehabilitation. Recent growing body of evidence with shared pathobiology with COVID-19 and the critically important role of inflammation in the context of stroke points to far-reaching consequences of acute stroke, just as in the case of COVID-19 (postacute event issues as well as long term issues). So far, stroke is typically defined by late-appearing disease manifestation by the range of stroke subtypes as defined by the WHO or American Stroke Association. This definition neglects the underlying pathobiological mechanisms such as low-grade chronic inflammation and already compromised vascular system. Diseases such as stroke are hardly a simple result of a single problem but rather a complex cascade of pathobiological processes and interactions in a complex biochemical environment. The evidence of changes in innate immunity and adaptive immunity during the index event of acute stroke and recovery over next 3-12 months can be easily elicited with simple bedside blood tests such as neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) with well over 300 published papers including several systematic reviews and meta-analyses confirming this. Global standard operating procedures (SOP) of stroke care are dictated by the national and international stroke guidelines at present. It is imperative to explore the evidence of system biology approach in current stroke guidelines. This is likely to be a key turning point in managing stroke across the continuum (prevention, management of acute event, and rehabilitation). Methods. We systematically searched for guideline recommendation on the day-to-day use of peripheral inflammatory markers such as NLR published in the English language between January 1, 2005, and October 2020. Any other evidence of system biology-based approach or recommendation was explored within the selected guidelines for this scoping review. Only the latest guideline per writing group was selected. Each guideline was analyzed independently by 2 to 4 authors to determine clinical scenarios explained/given, scientific evidence used, and recommendations presented in the context of system biology. Results. The scoping review found 2,911 titles at the beginning of the search. Final review included with 15 guidelines. Stroke-related organizations wrote sixty-five percent of the guidelines while national ministries wrote a fewer number of guidelines. We were primarily interested in recommendations for acute management in AIS published in the English language. Fifteen eligible guidelines were identified from 15 different countries/regions. None of the guidelines recommended the routine use of peripheral markers of inflammation, such as NLR, among their acute assessment and management recommendations. None of the existing guidelines explored the system biology approach to one of the most complex diseases affecting the human brain, stroke. Conclusions. This systematic review has identified a significant evidence-practice gap in all existing national stroke guidelines published in English medium as of October 2020. These guidelines included the only current "living stroke guidelines," stroke guidelines from Australia with a real opportunity to modernize the living stroke guidelines with systems biology approach, and provide 2020 vision towards better stroke care globally. Investigation of complex disease such as stroke is best served through a systems biology approach. One of the easiest places to start is simple blood tests such as total white cell count and NLR. Systems biology approach point us towards simple tools such immune-inflammatory index (SII) and serial systemic immune inflammatory indices (SSIIi) which should pave the way for the stroke physician community address the challenges in systems biology approach in stroke care. These challenges include translating bench research to the bedside, managing big data (continuous pulse, blood pressure, sleep, oxygen saturation, progressive changes in NLR, SII, SSIIi, etc.). Working with an interdisciplinary team also provides a distinct advantage. Recent adoption of historic WHO-IGAP calls for immediate action. Aims: To appraise the current instruments available for measuring the nursing work environment and re‐examine the definition and construct of the nursing work environment. Background: A psychometrically sound instrument is fundamental to understanding and improving the nursing work environment. The nursing work environment is a complex construct, and its definition remains inconclusive. None of the instruments available is considered as the gold standard. Evaluation: A comprehensive searching was undertaken in August 2021 in six databases according to PRISMA. The COSMIN and modified GRADE were applied to assess the methodological quality and measurement properties of the instruments. Instruments were categorized into three levels. The definition and construct of nursing work environment were revisited. Key issues: Forty‐one studies (19 instruments) were included. One, fourteen, and four instruments are respectively appraised as A‐, B‐ and C‐level recommendation. Definition and eight labels of nursing work environment are identified. Conclusion: This paper provides recommendations for selecting a proper instrument for the nursing work environment. Implications for nursing management: This study helps nurse managers to select instruments and understand the construct of the nursing work environment. Aims: This study aimed to systematically examine perceptions of nurses and physicians on pay‐for‐performance in hospital. Background: Pay‐for‐performance projects have proliferated over the past two decades, most systematic reviews of which solely focused on its effectiveness in primary health care and the physicians' or nurses' attitudes. However, systematic reviews of qualitative approaches for better examining perceptions of both nurses and physicians in hospital were lacking. Evaluation: Electronic databases were systematically searched with date from the inception to 31 December 2020. Meta‐aggregation synthesis methodology and the conceptual framework of the theory of planned behaviour were used to summarize findings. Key issues: A total of nine studies were included. Three major synthesized themes were identified: (1) perceptions of the motivation effects and positive outcomes, (2) perceptions about the design defects and negative effects and (3) perceptions of the obstacles in the implementation process. Conclusion: To maximize the intended positive effects, nurses' and physicians' perceptions should be considered and incorporated into the project design and implementation stage. Implications for Nursing Management: The paper gives enlightenment to nurse managers on improving and advancing the cause of nurses when planning for or evaluating their institutions' policies on pay‐for‐performance in the future research. With a growing global ageing population, approaches to assess and support decision‐making are becoming more pertinent. This scoping review aimed to identify and map current knowledge on assessment of older adults' decision‐making capacity in relation to independent living. A five‐stage scoping review framework was followed. Inclusion criteria were papers on assessment approaches used to evaluate decision‐making capacity of older adults, aged 60 years and over for independent living, including studies involving people with cognitive impairment and dementia. Five databases were searched for publications with eligibility criteria from January 2000 to December 2020; 4,118 results were retrieved from sources, resulting in 29 publications being analysed, eight of which were research reports. Publication characteristics and methodologies varied; however, many common components of decision‐making capacity assessment for independent living were identified including cognitive, functional, environmental and risk assessment. Overall, a multidisciplinary approach was recommended, and consideration of the person's values and preferences is noted in many publications. Decision‐making capacity assessment for independent living of older adults requires multicomponent, multidisciplinary assessment. Volunteering for an organisation, charity or group enables people to make connections with others and to be involved in interesting, worthwhile and/or enjoyable pursuits. Engaging in volunteering can form part of a social prescribing action plan developed between a patient and link worker. Greater understanding of the processes through which volunteering can improve people's well‐being as part of social prescribing will help to support link workers in their role. We conducted a best‐fit framework synthesis of qualitative literature on volunteering and well‐being. Our search of eight electronic databases, complemented by a Google search, conducted in June 2020, resulted in the location of 2210 potentially relevant references. After screening, 335 papers were read in full and 54 drawn upon within the review. They were published between 1993 and 2020. We used the New Economics Foundation's Five Ways to Well‐Being model to guide data extraction and synthesis. From this, we developed a conceptual framework that highlights how volunteering can contribute to identity validation and modification leading to the establishment of an acceptable sense of self. Our findings have implications for: (a) the use of volunteering as part of a link worker's toolkit as they seek to support people with varying psychosocial needs and (b) requirements of organisations accepting referrals to volunteering as part of social prescribing. Suicides by mental health patients account for around a quarter of all suicides (Walby et al, 2018). Within services a range of approaches have been developed and implemented to reduce the risk of patient suicides. After every patient death by suicide, a review is carried out to identify recommendations which may assist in preventing future suicides. It is therefore important to identify the most effective methods for implementing these recommendations. The objective of this systematic review, completed in Northern Ireland, was to identify how recommendations from Serious Adverse Incident (SAI) reviews can be effectively implemented to contribute to reducing deaths by suicide within mental health services. Eleven electronic databases were searched for relevant work from 1 January 2005–30 November 2020. Quantitative, qualitative and mixed methods studies were included. A narrative synthesis was carried out of published and unpublished work on the effectiveness of implementing recommendations, after a death by suicide in mental health services. The review, which includes 41 published papers and reports, found that the literature is focused on producing recommendations to reduce future risk of suicide in mental health services. There is a lack of focus on the extent and effectiveness of the implementation of these. Recommendations have often not been tested or operationalised, limiting the translational value of these contributions. Leadership and culture are also identified as key drivers for change in mental health services. This review demonstrates that high quality research is being complete in this area, however, the majority of published research presents recommendations from reviews of mental health patient suicides. Older gay men experience an elevated prevalence of adverse health conditions that may be compounded by age‐related deterioration. Some of these conditions may be ameliorated by regular adherence to physical activity (PA). However, many gay men participate in less PA than their age‐matched heterosexual counterparts. With a focus on gay men aged 60 and over, the aims of this review were to examine the evidence for older gay men's engagement with PA and the research approaches used to describe this group. A systematic search of six academic databases (Academic Search Premier, Cinahl, PubMed, Sport Discus, APA PsychInfo and APA PsychArticles) generated 23 papers from 1970 to 2020 that focused on older gay men's engagement with PA. Although surveys were well represented in the literature, further studies utilising qualitative methodological frameworks have the potential to inform targeted interventional programs aimed at reducing less health disparities. The value of PA in older adults lies principally in improved performance of activities of daily living, independent living, increased longevity, decreased cognitive decline and improved mental well‐being. Home‐visiting interventions are used to improve outcomes for families experiencing disadvantage. As scarce resources must be allocated carefully, appropriate methods are required to provide accurate information on the effect of these programmes. We aimed to investigate: economic evaluation/analysis methods used in home‐visiting programmes for children, young people and families, study designs and methods suitable in situations where randomised‐controlled‐trials are not feasible, and type of costs included in analyses, including any implementation costs stated. A systematic search and review was conducted of existing full economic evaluation/analysis methods in home‐visiting programmes for children, young people and/or families. We included studies published in English between January 2000 and mid‐November 2020. Of the 4,742 papers sourced, 60 were retained for full‐text review, and 21 included. Economic‐analysis methods found in the included studies were: within trial economic evaluation, economic evaluation using decision analytic modelling (i.e. cost‐utility, cost‐benefit analysis), cost comparison and cost‐consequence. Studies incorporating return on investment and budget impact analysis were also found. Study designs suitable when randomisation was not feasible included parallel cluster randomised trials and using pre‐post intervention data. Costs depended mainly on study context and only one study reported implementation costs. We hope this information will help guide future economic evaluations of home‐visiting interventions. Aim: The aim of this study is to understand how the behaviour of focal leaders impacts health care team performance and effectiveness. Background: Despite recent shifts towards more collectivistic leadership approaches, hierarchical structures that emphasize the role of an individual focal leader (i.e., the formal appointed leader) are still the norm in health care. Our understanding of the effect of focal leader behaviours on health care team performance remains unclear. Evaluation: A systematic review was conducted. Five electronic databases were searched using key terms. One thousand forty‐seven records were retrieved. Data extraction, quality appraisal and narrative synthesis were conducted in line with Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta‐Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. Key issues: Fifty papers met the criteria for inclusion, were reviewed and synthesized under the following categories: task‐focused leadership, directive leadership, empowering leadership and relational focused leadership. Conclusions: Categories are discussed in relation to team performance outcomes, safety specific outcomes, individual‐level outcomes and outcomes related to interpersonal dynamics. Emerging themes are explored to examine and reflect on how leadership is enacted in health care, to catalogue best practices and to cascade these leadership practices broadly. Implications for Nursing Management: Empowering and relational leadership styles were associated with positive outcomes for nursing team performance. Adults with intellectual disabilities experience significant physical and mental health needs when compared to their typically developing peers. Previous research evidences that many people with intellectual disabilities have negative encounters within acute hospitals. The aim of this systematic review was to identify the specific views and experiences of adults with intellectual disabilities when accessing acute hospital services arising from the available literature. The review commenced in June 2019 and was updated in May 2020. A systematic search of five electronic databases including CINAHL Plus, MEDLINE, Web of Science, SCOPUS and PsycINFO was undertaken. Studies published from 2014, peer‐reviewed, written in English and referred to adults with intellectual disabilities aged 18 plus and acute hospital settings were included. The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta‐Analyses guidelines and the Critical Appraisal Skills Programme quality assurance checklist were used to review all selected papers. Five studies from a total of 421 were deemed suitable for inclusion in the review as the voices of adults with intellectual disabilities were present. Poor communication from healthcare staff towards adults with intellectual disabilities emerged in four studies while the use of the hospital passport and the intellectual disability liaison nurse to significantly improve the hospital experience for adults with intellectual disabilities was identified in two of the studies. Following a systematic and thematic analysis of the studies, three main overarching themes emerged: communication; information sharing; and compassion and respect. Despite the national and international focus on improving healthcare for people with intellectual disabilities, this review highlights lack of communication, inadequate information sharing and issues related to compassionate care and respect. The review identifies the possibility that an increased use of hospital passports and an extension of the intellectual disability liaison nursing roles may enhance the hospital experience for people with intellectual disabilities. Aim: The aim of this paper is to conduct a concept analysis on the term, "children with medical complexity." Background: Children with medical complexity (CMC) describes pediatric patients with chronic, sustained acuity; however, there is a lack of consensus in the literature regarding its exact meaning, characteristics, and implications. Design: This analysis relied upon the framework described by Walker and Avant. Data Source: The CINAHL, MEDLINE, and PubMed databases were queried from April 2020 to December 2020 with an initial search of the literature for the keyword, "children with medical complexity" and other associated terms, such as "pediatric medical complexity" and "nursing care of children with medical complexity." Review Methods: This analysis will explore the concept of CMC and its significance, attributes, antecedents, and consequences. Results: This investigation revealed that CMC are a growing population of pediatric patients who have one or more complex chronic conditions that affect multiple body systems, experience functional limitations, require extensive care coordination from multiple providers, and are dependent upon life‐sustaining medical technology.
