The motivation of this paper is to investigate the resistance of countries' energy research and development (RD&D) expenditures to random shocks. The analysis includes the five countries (France, Germany, Japan, the United States, and the United Kingdom) that are the biggest investors in RD&D in fossil fuels, renewables, energy efficiency, and nuclear energy. Thus, economies will be able to take precautions against global shocks in producing sustainable energy policies. To achieve this aim, this paper uses the artificial neural network approach, which uses a distributed computing model that can store and generalize data after a learning period. Empirical results widely depend on countries and distinct energy technology policy fields. The key findings provide evidence that RD&D expenditures, except for renewables, do not tend to mean revert. The economies of Japan, Germany, and the United States should make more renewable investments to reduce the resistance of renewable energy sources to shocks and thus produce policies for both environmental sustainability and energy security. This study analyzes the impact of green finance and renewable energy on energy efficiency in E−7 economies. We analyzed the nonlinear and asymmetric effects of green finance and renewable energy on energy efficiency. We collected data from 1985 to 2017 and applied the NARDL and 2SLS methods. The results reveal that the differences in green finance development in the E−7 region are as follows: China (0.61), Brazil (0.55), India (0.53), Indonesia (0.49), Mexico (0.37), and Russia (0.39). In 2019, the Gini coefficient was the largest in Russia (0.57), followed by Turkey. Based on empirical findings, the largest barrier to green energy efficiency is insufficient private and governmental investment in the energy sector to improve access to power, to increase energy security and promote economic growth in an environmentally sustainable manner. The findings point to a promising but vulnerable future for renewable energy and energy efficiency deployment in E−7 countries. As countries worldwide seek to reach net zero emissions within the coming decades, data center sustainability measures are becoming increasingly important as these facilities consume substantial amounts of electricity to support globally expanding digital infrastructure. Yet, local renewable energy production and waste heat utilization are still rarely used in data centers, even though recent high electricity prices have considerably increased the economic value of self-generation and energy efficiency investments. The benefits and cost-effectiveness of data center sustainability measures have also not yet been thoroughly researched in cold-climate regions, where the data center industry is currently growing rapidly. Thus, this paper assesses how solar photovoltaics (PV) and waste heat utilization can effectively be integrated into different cold climate data centers, with a case study analyzing data centers in Finland and northern Japan. The modelled results indicate that solar PV systems can cost-effectively be used to provide renewable electricity to data centers in both Finland and northern Japan, with electricity prices having the largest influence on economic performance. The use of larger external PV systems is shown to be cost-effective at the higher electricity prices seen in 2022, whereas smaller rooftop PV systems and grid electricity provide more economic benefits at 2019 price levels. Selling surplus PV electricity to the grid and using waste heat for district heating is also shown to be effective in data centers located in Finland, whereas battery storage and snow melting are better suited to utilize surplus PV electricity and data center waste heat in northern Japan. The findings of the study highlight the serious energy security issues faced by the region in terms of lack of access, inconsistent supplies, unreliable grids, and high energy prices. Renewables like solar energy, wind power, and hydropower have the potential to propel regional countries to energy and environmental sustainability. As the world's largest energy consuming country, it is important to study the mechanisms of improving renewable energy and energy efficiency to achieve green economic growth in China and globally. Therefore, this study investigates the impact of environmental regulations on green economic growth and renewable energy development in China, respectively. First, this study measures the level of green economic growth in Chinese cities by the Metafrontier-Global-SBM super-efficient data envelopment analysis (DEA) model from the perspective of energy efficiency. And the environmental regulation intensity was measured using an improved fuzzy comprehensive evaluation method. Second, a spatial econometric model based on longitudinal data was constructed to examine the non-linear effects of environmental regulations on green economic growth and its spatial spillover and feedback effects. The results indicated a U-shaped non-linear effect of energy efficiency-related environmental regulation on green economic growth as well as a spatial spillover effect and spatial feedback effect. Finally, the impact of environmental regulation on renewable energy development was investigated. The results show that renewable energy development, an important component of green economic growth, is equally dependent on the implementation of environmental regulation policies and that environmental regulation makes a significant contribution to renewable energy development. Energy extraction from renewable sources like hydrokinetic energy from the flowing water of rivers and canals is one of the affordable and clean energy generation technique. The current work is carried out towards performance enhancement of the Darrieus hydrokinetic turbine for open water channel utilization application. The investigation has been done using the flat and concave shape of blocking plate. Both blocking plates have been analyzed for different sizes as well as location at the upstream side of the turbine. The obtained results are reported after considering appropriate velocity correction. The blocking plates with projected width of 76 mm, 89 mm, 101 mm, 127 mm, 152 mm, and 203 mm are selected for the investigation. It is observed that 101 mm (Width Ratio , WR =0.36) with concave blocking plate provides maximum C p of 0.245 at 0.99 TSR. Also, the optimum region is found between 0.143 and 0.286 Distance Ratio (DR) from the top corner of the acrylic plate. The concave blocking plate enhance the performance more compared to flat blocking plate. Plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) have received a lot of interest because of their ability to cut fuel usage by using electricity from the grid as an alternative energy source. PHEVs differ from typical hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) in terms of increased battery capacity, the availability of plug-in recharging, and improved battery state of charge (SOC) management systems. Efficient energy consumption and excellent performance are critical issues for hybrid powertrains. The estimation of SOC in PHEVs is a difficult NP-hard problem that is frequently tackled utilising metaheuristic techniques. In this paper, we offer an enhanced dingo optimisation with deep learning-based prediction (EDOA-DLP) model specifically tailored for PHEVs. The EDOA-DLP model includes an efficient SOC estimate algorithm for real-time energy management. The EDOA-DLP technique's performance has been thoroughly proven through considerable experimentation in a variety of circumstances. The results show that the proposed EDOA-DLP method beats other current methods in terms of predicting SOC accurately and reaching the targeted goals for PHEVs. Overall, this research presents a unique EDOA-DLP SOC prediction approach for PHEVs, with promising results in terms of energy management and performance optimisation. During its operation, a photovoltaic (PV) panel is exposed to various and in general, stochastic thermal and wind conditions, which have a significant influence on the PV panel operating temperature. The increased PV panel operating temperatures normally have an unfavorable effect on the PV panel performance and lifetime, thus various cooling methods were proposed in order to increase the photovoltaic energy conversion efficiency. A reasonable step before the consideration of a specific cooling strategy is to obtain a PV panel performance analysis with respect to its surroundings (specific geographical micro location) for various operating conditions. This paper presents such a study, which was conducted through an experimentally validated numerical model. Numerous CFD simulations regarding heat and fluid flow around a monocrystalline PV panel coupled with a heat flow simulation inside the PV panel elements were conducted. The aim of the paper was to investigate an effective heat transfer field and the variations in the PV panel temperatures with respect to various wind velocities and heat source conditions. A detailed study regarding pressure, viscous and body (buoyancy) forces as well as their effects on flow separation was also conducted. The study also investigated the changes in the effective heat transfer near the PV panel. The gained results in this study turned out to be useful for the consideration of a specific cooling strategy for PV panels, which can ultimately lead to an increase in PV panel efficiency and lifetime. Additionally, the conducted study could be used to improve the delivered electricity prediction from the PV system at a selected location defined by specific wind velocities and solar insolation distributions. This paper presents the editorial for the Renewable and Sustainable Energy Reviews joint special issue devoted to the research work discussed and presented at the 11th Conference on Sustainable Development of Energy, Water and Environment Systems (SDEWES), held from the 4th September to the 9th September 2016 in Lisbon, Portugal and the 2nd South East European (SEE) SDEWES Conference held from June 15th to June 18th, 2016 in Piran, Slovenia. This special issue is in line with the journal's aim of publishing research from across the ever-broadening field of renewable and sustainable energy with a strong review element. Previous SDEWES conference special issues have gathered a significant knowledge base in the field of sustainable development that reflects the continuous research efforts of the SDEWES research community. Therefore, this editorial provides not only an overview of the papers published in this particular special issue, but also a wider overview of the current trends in the domain of sustainable and renewable energy. This year's special issue focuses particularly on the benefits of the bio-based economy, energy security issues, fossil fuel thermal plant alternatives and environmental constraints, district heating and cooling together with cross sector energy efficiency and energy conservation issues. Sustainable transport systems, the issue of fuel poverty in urban neighbourhoods and renewable energy to support development of peripheral rural areas, optimising passive building design for hot climates and solar-powered heating and cooling are further topics featured in this special issue. In the process of selecting papers for this special issue, the guest editors invited in total 23 extended manuscripts for consideration for publication. Industry poses one of the biggest challenges in the renewable energy transition. In this paper, fossil fuels in the European industrial sector are replaced by renewable energy using a novel tool, IndustryPLAN, a planning tool for the assessment of national industrial sectors. In a bottom-up approach, each industry sub-sector is addressed with energy efficiency and fossil fuel replacement measures based on best available and innovative technologies, and in a top-down approach, the fuel and electricity consumption per country is analysed and decarbonised. The results indicate that: 1. Known technologies can decarbonise most of the industrial sector; 2. Costs and efficiencies are improved by energy savings and electrification; 3. Limiting bioenergy consumption is a critical challenge, emphasising the key role of energy savings and electrification, and the alternative of using hydrogen or hydrogen-based electrofuels will make the transition more expensive and induce energy losses. A full transition to renewable energy and a decarbonised industry sector may be possible before 2050, however, this requires that all investments are sustainable from 2030 onwards and that grid electricity is fully decarbonised. The Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) that emphasizes sustainable and affordable energy presents a practical pathway to achieve sustainable growth. Moreover, this goal aligns with SDG 13, which focuses on climate action. Nonetheless, it is important to consider factors such as political and financial risk, as they can influence climate action efforts and the renewable energy sources adoption. Hence, this study broadens the conversation surrounding CO 2 emission reduction and the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It accomplishes this by investigating the interplay between renewable energy, political risk, financial risk, and CO 2 emissions in Finland spanning from 1990/Q1 to 2021/Q4. Notably, this research distinguishes itself through its exploration of these complex connections, employing a wavelet-based quantile methodology. Unlike traditional quantile regression, which can only reveal connections between variables within each quantile, the wavelet-based quantile approach enables the simultaneous capture of correlations across quantiles and periods. The results show that in the long-term and across all quantiles (0.01–0.99), energy efficiency, specifically gas and oil efficiency, lessens CO 2. In addition, low financial and political risks improve ecological quality by lessening CO 2 across all periods and quantiles (0.01–0.99). Environmental degradation has become one of the major challenges facing the global community. This paper aims to explore the more effective options to combat environmental degradation by investigating the linearity and nonlinearity (trade openness set as a threshold variable) of energy efficiency, natural gas, renewable energy and ecological footprint. To this end, linear and non-linear panel models were constructed using panel data from 60 countries. The results of the linear analysis show that improving energy efficiency, and increasing the consumption of natural gas and renewable energy are conducive to inhibiting environmental degradation. Energy efficiency has the most significant negative correlation with ecological footprint, followed by renewable energy, and then natural gas, implying that improving energy efficiency and developing renewable energy is a more effective strategy to combat environmental degradation. The results of the nonlinear analysis show that there are threshold effects of trade openness between energy efficiency and ecological footprint, and between renewable energy and ecological footprint. The negative impact of both renewable energy and energy efficiency on the ecological footprint increases when trade openness exceeds the threshold. This suggests that, in terms of curbing environmental degradation, enhancing trade openness may further increase the negative impacts of energy efficiency and renewable energy on ecological footprint. At the same time, this confirms the positive role of trade openness in environmental protection. Policies targeting energy efficiency and renewable energy are sometimes viewed as more politically feasible than carbon pricing in pursuit of emission reduction goals. This paper assesses underlying drivers of energy policy development. These factors include economic, social, environmental, and institutional variables. The between estimator for panel data is an appropriate method for our focus on some exogenous variables that vary more across countries than over time. We find that larger oil reserves per capita have a negative relationship with renewable energy policy development. Education and political globalisation have strong positive relationships with both energy-efficiency and renewable-energy policy development. These results suggest that greater participation in global political groups can be an indirect approach toward energy policy development, in cases where direct and immediate policies are hard to implement. OECD countries have higher policy scores by 33 and 25 points in energy efficiency and renewable energy respectively. The cost of heat savings in buildings increase as more heat savings are achieved and hence, alternatives other than savings typically become more economically feasible at a certain level of heat reductions. The challenge addressed in this paper is to identify when the cost of heat savings become more expensive than the cost of sustainable heat supply, so society does not overinvest in heat saving measures. This study first investigates the heat saving potentials for different countries in Europe, along with their associated costs, followed by a comparison with alternative ways of supplying sustainable heating. Furthermore, the levelised cost of supplying sustainable heat is estimated for both a single technology and from an energy system perspective. The results are analysed by assessing various parameters such as socio-economic costs and energy efficiency improvements in the national energy systems. The results demonstrate the economically feasible levels of heat savings and heat production for various European countries, highlighting differences in their national conditions and energy systems. The findings in this paper indicate that overinvestments in heat savings can be avoided by saving heat until a level around 30–50% of projected heat demands and supplying the remaining heat demand with sustainable heat sources. Underwater gliders are one of the most promising approaches to achieve an increase of human presence in the oceans. Among existing solutions, thermal driven gliders present long range and endurance capabilities, offering the possibility of remaining years beneath water collecting and transmitting data to shore. A key component in thermal gliders lies in the process used to collect ocean's thermal energy. In this paper a new quasi-static model of a thermal driven volumetric pump, for use in underwater gliders, is presented. The study also encompasses an analysis of the influence different hydraulic system parameters have on the thermodynamic cycle efficiency. Finally, the paper proposes a simple dynamic model of a heat exchanger that uses commercially available materials for the Phase Change Material (PCM) container. This paper discusses the application of distributed energy resources (DERs) at water resource recovery facilities (WRRF). The DERs considered include solar photovoltaic (PV) systems, biomass electricity generation, and energy storage systems (ESS). The financial and demand management implications of the deployment of various DER combinations are analyzed. The load profile of a single plant is studied in order to draw conclusions regarding the optimal size for energy storage solutions based on the goals of the WRRF. A case study of a Medium sized WRRF, located in a large metropolitan area, is used to compare different financial and technical implementation strategies. An ideal combination of DERs is determined based on analysis of various scenarios for nine distinct use cases. The overarching goal of this paper is to understand the potential of various combinations of DERs for managing peak demand and resilience at WRRFs. Many ports and terminals endeavor to enhance energy efficiency as energy prices have increased through years and climate change mitigation is a key target for the port industry. Stricter environmental regulations are adopted by authorities to limit pollutants and GHG emissions arising from energy consumption. Increasingly, port operational strategies and energy usage patterns are under scrutiny. To ingrain sustainability and environmental protection of ports, the use of innovative technology appears as a critical conduit in achieving a transition from a carbon-intensive port industry (dependent on fossil fuels) to a low-carbon port model by harnessing renewable energy, alternative fuels (e.g. LNG, hydrogen, biofuel), smarter power distribution systems, energy consumption measurement systems. In this context, this paper conducts a systematic literature review to analyze operational strategies (e.g. peak shaving, operations optimization), technology usage (e.g. electrification of equipment, cold-ironing, energy storage systems), renewable energy, alternative fuels and energy management systems (e.g. smart grid with renewable energy) for improving the energy efficiency and environmental performance of ports and terminals. Research gaps and future research directions are identified. This paper presents the application of the Discrete Event Simulation (DES) in an industrial plant to analyze the behavior of the consumption and generation of electrical energy in conjunction with other variables of the process. In other words, the process modeling was conducted considering the energy consumption in equipment as well as the local photovoltaic (PV) energy generation. A medium-sized plant was the reference base used herein, and the main variables considered were the time of supply of tanks and processing of raw material, active power of equipment and energy tariffs. A simulation model with resolution in seconds was designed, enabling the simulation of consumption curves of each equipment of a given part of the production process. The equipment of variable active demand was modeled by a mathematical regression method, and the others were assumed with constant power. The same model was altered to unit in minutes for simulating the monthly electricity consumption, so as to obtain financial results. The contractual rules for electricity supply were included, and the use of a diesel-powered generator was taken into account. The application of a freeware was employed as a low cost alternative for small and medium-sized companies, even though the lack of graphic resources has increased the complexity of the system modeling process. The model with resolution in seconds proved to be efficient to simulate the consumption profile of a specific equipment that alters the power in a short-time period, such as the pumps. The model, on the other hand, in minutes allowed a more effective analysis in terms of finance, enabling the verification of alternative scenarios throughout a month. The monthly cost reduction perceived by considering self-generation in this model was about 36%. Ground heat exchanger takes the soil underground as heat source or sink to supply cooling or heating. It has been widely used in building heating and cooling systems due to high efficiency and environmental friendliness. This paper reviews the latest research on ground heat exchangers from several new perspectives and demonstrates their potentials in achieving zero energy buildings. Firstly, ground heat exchangers are classified into water-based and air-based ones based on the heat transfer medium. They can be used in a passive or active approach. Associated research and projects for each approach are introduced and analysed. Then the integration of ground heat exchangers with various cooling and heating technologies and related studies are reviewed. These technologies include solar thermal collectors, cooling towers, nocturnal radiative cooling technology, solar chimney, etc. Finally, a technical route for ground heat exchangers to help realize zero energy buildings is presented, which provides a promising solution to improve energy efficiency of buildings. In this paper, two generic photovoltaic (PV) panels (poly-Si and mono-Si) were experimentally tested in typical Mediterranean climatic conditions. The focus of the applied experimental approach was to examine the effect of backside convective thermal profile and its impact on temperature distribution, i.e. on panel electrical efficiency. Therefore, a series of measurements was made in 2015, from April to July, as well as CFD modeling in order to obtain a detailed analysis of the possible working regimes. According to the obtained experimental and CFD results, the present design of typical PV panels have an unfavorable impact on PV panel electrical efficiency. Namely, typical contemporary panel designs lead to two typical backside convective air temperature profiles which have a direct impact on the effectiveness of natural cooling. As shown in the obtained measurements, the specific convective profiles at the backside of PV panels have a significant influence on the degradation rate of panel electrical efficiency in the estimated amount of 2.5% up to 4.5%. The results of the research discussed in this paper signal the need to provide a possible redesign of the backside surface in conventional PV panels, in order to increase their average efficiency (more efficient backside thermal dissipation). The paper focuses on financial support from EU Structural Funds to sustainable energy development in Baltic States. The paper aims to compare the use of Structural Funds support for sustainable energy development in Baltic States in two financing periods: 2007–2013 and 2014–2020 and to assess the impact of EU structural support in helping Baltic States to implement energy efficiency and renewable energy development targets set in EU energy policy documents. The paper analyses EU sustainable energy policy priorities and energy efficiency and renewable energy targets set for Baltic States and compares progress achieved in implementing energy efficiency and renewable energy targets in Baltic States after EU accession. The paper found that the EU Structural Funds have positively influenced the sustainable energy development in Baltic States. The major impact was related with increase in energy productivity because of energy savings achieved in refurbishment of residential buildings. Lithuania has achieved the biggest progress in energy productivity development since 2004 among Baltic States. Estonia was the only country from Baltic States which has allocated structural aid for promotion of wind energy and achieved the best results in increase of the share of renewables (mainly wind) in electricity generation. Latvia has the highest share of renewable in electricity generation structure and final energy consumption and did not provide support for renewable in 2007–2014 however support for biomass is foreseen in 2014–2020 financing period. Job creation is an important component of the socio-economic effects associated with the development and deployment of renewable energy (RE) and energy efficiency (EE) technologies. The potential contribution of the RE and EE sectors in creating new jobs affect the public policy as well as the allocation of public resources to promote related activities. This paper provides an overview on the job creation potential along the value chains of key RE and EE technologies by skill set, technological category and the stage in the life cycle of the development and deployment process. We summarize the existing approaches to estimate job creation effects of the RE and EE sectors and report the existing estimations of job creation figures by technology and capacity. Demographic change, dramatic population increase and rapid industrial growth are major trends emerging in Malaysia. Climate change and depletion of fossil fuel along with the rise in petroleum prices have forced the Malaysian Government to rethink strategies to be more in line with other developed countries including the decision to embark on renewable energy (RE) resources as a better source of energy amongst the global energy mix. The Malaysian Government is making frantic efforts to make policies, RE programmes and incentives more effective so as to promote and develop the use of RE. Malaysia is rich with fossil fuel but these are fast depleting. Although RE is necessary, current RE resources are still not enough. Therefore, exploration into other resources must be considered in order to meet future energy demands. The objective of this paper is to identify the potential of available renewable energy resources in Malaysia as well as the country׳s current implementation strategies. This paper also discusses the different RE policies in Malaysia. In order to determine the potential of RE, various sources and published materials in conferences, international journals and information released by relevant government bodies and miscellaneous resources are used. This research has revealed that among all the renewable energy sources that are present in Malaysia, biomass and solar energy are the most prospective ones. By 2020 Europe has to increase its energy efficiency and share of renewables in 20%. However, even accomplishing these challenging objectives Europe will be effectively wasting energy as we demonstrate in this paper. In our way towards a fully renewable scenario, we need at least to stop wasting energy in order to guarantee the energy supply needed for growth and comfort. We waste energy when we employ more primary energy than the final energy we ultimately use and this excess cannot be reutilized. In this paper we propose the WE (wasted energy) as a novel metric to measure the performance of energy systems and set up appropriate targets. The WE incorporates information about energy efficiency and renewable sources. Unlike European legislation, the WE considers them in an integrated way. This approach will help Member States to exploit their intrinsic capabilities and design their optimum strategy to reach their objectives. Using the information in Eurostat, we calculate the WE of Member States in EU-28 and their evolution. We also analyze illustrative examples to highlight strategies to reduce the WE, study the connection between economic development and WE, and provide a tool to diagnose the potential of improvement of an energy system. This paper develops a thermodynamic model for the regenerative Brayton cycle that uses monochlorobiphenyl waste as fuel in a combustion chamber to power a gas turbine. The regenerator increases the air temperature entering the combustion chamber to react with monochlorobiphenyl wastes to produce a higher turbine inlet temperature. The pressure ratio and turbine inlet temperature can negatively or positively affect power plants' thermal efficiency. Thus, different pressure ratios and turbine inlet temperatures are used to calculate the overall thermal efficiency. A stoichiometric reaction-based gas composition model is used to determine the combustion gas composition at the combustion chamber exit and to calculate the heat capacity of air and combustion gases as a function of temperature. The exergy analysis of the proposed power plant is presented to determine the effect of the pressure ratio on the exergy efficiency of the turbine, compressor, and regenerator. According to the results, an increase in pressure ratio increases cycle thermal efficiency and turbine inlet temperature when using a regenerator, whereas the temperatures decrease when not using a regenerator. The Brayton cycle with a regenerator increases thermal efficiency from 30% to 100% for a pressure ratio of 6–30. This contrasts with the Brayton cycle without a regenerator. In addition, for the regenerative Brayton cycle, the turbine inlet temperature rises from 1050 K to 1200 K as the pressure ratio rises from 1 to 30. In the absence of the regenerator, however, this variation's trend is in the opposite direction. Furthermore, the results show that an increase in pressure ratio will increase the exergy efficiency of the compressor and regenerator, while a decrease will occur in the exergy efficiency of the turbine. Findings indicate that the regenerator has the highest exergy efficiency at a pressure ratio higher than five, followed by turbine and compressor exergy efficiency. European Union countries sharing the same goal of carbon reduction have created a complex array of different strategies, policies and instruments to provide a supportive framework for navigating and accelerating the energy transition. The paper assumes that different mixes of policy instruments influence the European Union's efforts to become a low-carbon economy. However, instead of examining a policy instrument mix in isolation at the country-level, this paper uses hierarchical cluster analysis to detect the extent of similarities and patterns across European countries, considering the types of policy instruments that target energy efficiency and renewable energy. Fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis is then applied to explore different combinations of specific policy instruments for each cluster in managing the energy transition. The application of hierarchical cluster analysis detected the existence of three country clusters, which makes the European policy landscape less complex and suitable for developing more effective energy transition policies. The application of fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis confirmed that there is no single instrument necessary to make the energy transition a success. This paper introduces the recent developments in Renewable Energy Systems for building heating, cooling and electricity production with thermal energy storage. Due to the needed Clean Energy Transition in the many countries and regions and the goal of closing Net Zero Energy Buildings, it is crucial to provide efficient Renewable Energy Based heating/cooling systems for buildings. The buildings contribute about 40% of total energy consumption, with significant potential for primary energy savings. The application of various Renewable Energy based systems is discussed including: the presentation of Hybrid Renewable Energy bases systems, methodology for their design and methods for the optimisation of Buildings RES. At present, mostly the systems based on heat pumps and photovoltaics are applied in buildings. However, the sources of those energy systems are unstable, and they are influenced by the climate environment. In this paper, four energy control strategies are proposed and analyzed for the standalone Renewable/Fuel Cell Hybrid Power Source (RES/FC HPS). The concept of the load following (LF) and Maximum Efficiency Point Tracking (MEPT) is used to control the fueling rates. A standalone RES/FC HPS uses at least one Renewable Energy Sources (RES) and a Polymer Electrolyte Membrane (PEM) Fuel Cell (FC) as backup source. Photovoltaic (PV) array and wind turbines (WT) farm are used as RES and the surplus of energy during light load stages is stored in hydrogen tank via water electrolysis to fuel the PEMFC. Small-scale RESs and commercially available PEMFCs are interfaced to the common DC bus via power converters and then to the single-phase distribution grid through a voltage source inverter. RES/FC HPS seem to be an efficient alternative for supplying smart houses and isolated sites. This paper proposes a new supervision strategy of the Energy Management Unit (EMU) based on the LF control approach that assures a charge-sustaining (CS) mode for the Energy Storage System (ESS). So, the capacity of the batteries stack can be reduced at minimum if it is directly connected to the DC bus. The ultracapacitors stack compensates dynamically the power flow balance on the DC bus, regulating the DC voltage via a bidirectional buck-boost power converter. Thus, a semi-active hybrid topology is adopted for the ESS having the batteries stack. The MEPT loops ensure an optimized energy management of the RES/FC HPS. The LF strategy designed based on the power flow balance guarantees the load demand through the efficient management of the power flow from RES, FC and ESS, adapting FC energy production to load profile. The FC energy production is controlled via the fueling rates (one is controlled in the LF loop and the other is controlled in the MEPT loop) to maximize the energy consumption indicator: the ratio of the produced energy and the fuel consumed by the FC system during a load cycle. Thus, this paper evaluates the control performances of the four control topologies to fuel the FC stack during an variable RES and load profile. The MATLAB-Simulink® software package is used to model the RES/FC HPS and develop the four EMU strategies. This paper reviews the incentives for pursuing a low-carbon electricity sector that are embedded in China's regulatory and policy framework. To do so, we first describe the industry structure and the regulatory framework. Second, we explicitly review the policies that were developed to promote energy efficiency and renewable energy. These policies range from the introduction of legal requirements to undertake particular actions to pricing mechanism and financial incentives. Based on this, we tease out the challenges faced by a sector governed by a myriad of complex arrangements, different institutions and agents who face different and often conflicting incentives for pursuing environmental and energy efficiency objectives. The need of a more persistent human presence on sea is driving the development of increasingly more efficient Autonomous Underwater Vehicles. A particularly promising solution to power these vehicles is the retrieval of energy from the ocean temperature gradient. This paper investigates the use of thermoelectric generators (TEGs) for that purpose, by presenting a complete model of thermoelectric generators embedded in the hull of an underwater glider. The model includes not only the thermoelectric generators but also the heat transfer process and the behaviour of different heat storage materials. Several simulations are performed, for each storage material, to determine the adequate design parameters leading to sufficient energy generation for a thermal glider. It is shown that the use of Phase Change Materials (PCM) as an energy storage material is highly advantageous over the use of sea water or stainless steel. Furthermore, it is shown that this approach, although leading to a high number of TEGs and mass of PCM, is compatible with current existing glider dimensions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Despite its vast natural resources, African is facing serious challenges in sustainable development in an energy sector, if addressed with dispatch could not only check its indispensable needs, but also mitigate some global phenomenon at stake, such as desertification, environmental degradation and green house emission. This paper reviews the prospects of four major renewable energy sources-hydro, solar, wind and biomass- for each of the three leading countries in Africa namely South Africa, Egypt and Nigeria. Based on literature survey of energy efficiency, all the three countries encourage energy efficiency in varying degrees. In the course of this review, several national energy policy frameworks of these countries were looked into, especially on how African countries could overcome the persistent energy crisis in the continent by utilizing the naturally gifted renewable energy sources. This could only be achievable if proper technology, awareness and skills for harnessing the resources are provided. This research paper collects the outcomes of an experimental study focused on the energy benefits achieved by coupling an energy efficient building with a sunspace in winter season and Mediterranean climate. Acting as passive Solar heating elements, sunspaces are intended to be a valuable tool among sustainable and energy-efficient constructive and/or retrofitting strategies. In order to assess the energy saving potential of the above-mentioned coupling and relate it to the main design parameters, two operative steps were carried out: the numerical step allowed different simulated configurations to be evaluated in order to identify the optimal one from an energy perspective and physically realize it; the monitoring phase served the double purpose of calibrating the simulation model and provide on-site validated data for subsequent assessments and comparisons. Three main sunspace configurations were tested: irradiative single-glazed, irradiative double-glazed and convective double-glazed. The convective double glazed configuration was found to outperform the others since the daily energy consumption reduction exceeded the 27% (compared to the irradiative, double glazed counterpart) for all weather conditions. Besides, the activation of a mechanical ventilation system was slightly counterproductive in terms of discomfort phenomena since a less stable indoor air temperature was guaranteed. Comparing the two irradiative configurations, it was found that the addition of an extra glass layer was responsible of a quite constant reduction of 1 kW h/day, thus increasing the percent heating energy demand saving achieved through the insertion of the sunspace from approximately 3,3%–8,7%, while minimizing indoor air temperature fluctuations too. Southeast Asia is a significant stakeholder in the global action against climate change, given its growing population, rising greenhouse gas emissions, and vulnerability to climate change impacts. Public policy makers in this region are faced with the challenge of transitioning to cleaner energy sources to enable the attainment of Paris Agreement goals, while also expanding access to affordable and reliable energy supplies. Southeast Asia has one of world's fastest growing rates of greenhouse gas emissions due to rising fossil fuel combustion, second only to South Asia. As such, it is imperative to decouple its energy consumption from emissions growth. This paper reviews Southeast Asia's energy sector trends, with a focus on electricity supply and demand vis-à-vis global decarbonization efforts. Abstract: Prince Edward Island (PEI) is the smallest province in Canada measuring about 5700 km2 in area with a population of around 130,000 people. Small family farm operation is part of the Island's way of life. However, the dairy industry in North America is undergoing significant structural change. Statistics show a significant decline in the small dairy farms industry, while the number of large operations has been increasing. Advantages for large operations include purchasing energy in large quantities with better price margins and the inherent economy of scale created by such breaks. One strategy for small-scale farms to become competitive is to reduce their energy-related operational costs and greenhouse gas emissions. This can be achieved through taking energy efficiency steps, reducing overall energy consumption and generating energy through renewable energy resources and technologies. This paper uses a case study of a small dairy farm in Oyster Bed Bridge, PEI to gain insight into the direct use of energy within small dairy farms. An energy audit methodology is used to determine the energy intensity of the farm as well as energy efficiency opportunities. The paper also assesses the feasibility of meeting part of the energy demand of the farm with renewable energy generation. Energy efficiency recommendations for the case study farm include lighting retrofitting and regular maintenance of refrigeration condenser units. Renewable energy generation findings include the potential use of an anaerobic digester or a 25 kW wind turbine to generate the majority of the operation's energy. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: The worldwide water supply represents a significant portion of the global energy consumption. This energy consumption, related to the collection, treatment and transportation of water, entails a large amount of costs. However, these costs are liable to be minimised with and/or without reduction on energy consumption. The purpose of this paper is to provide a review about measures and methods to achieve water supply systems efficiency. The paper summarises and compares previous investigations in order to provide the state-of-the-art to the reader. Measures with and without investment in order to reduce costs and energy consumption are presented. The paper also explores the use of hydraulic simulation and optimisation strategies in water supply systems, involving topics such as demand prediction, networks design, pumps operation, real-time operations and renewable energy production. Although the great advances in the area, there are unexplored (or poorly explored) methodologies that can be tested and maybe applied in a large number of water systems. Public acceptance of sustainable energy innovations and policies is of crucial importance in enabling the transition to decarbonized energy systems necessary to meet the key climate targets of the Paris Agreement. This is particularly important in the context of the European Union, which is the third largest energy-related greenhouse gas emitter in the world. However, achieving acceptance is complex and requires improved understanding of the underlying conditions that are likely to motivate it. To contribute to this understanding and overcome common shortcomings in the literature, this paper presents a multidimensional and cross-national framework for the factors that have the potential to motivate both dimensions of acceptance, namely adoption and support. The innovations of interest are numerous and include electric vehicles, residential solar panels, energy-efficient home insulation, environmental taxes and incentives. The paper employs multilevel regression analysis and combines individual and contextual data from all the European Union nations to demonstrate the significance of various types of predictors in motivating acceptance. It is found that citizens' personal capabilities and attitudes towards life satisfaction, climate change and the environment influence both dimensions of acceptance. Attitudes towards broader socio-political dimensions such as representation, equity and transparency primarily influence support, whereas national environmental and energy policy indicators primarily influence adoption. Renewable energy is a significant input for environmental, economic and social development. The wind energy has become the quickest thriving renewable energy resource. It is worth noting that wind power has the least emissions and lowest water consumption, but it has comparatively high costs. Thus, making wind energy station planning decision requires an operation of balancing various technical, economic, ecological, and environmental aspects over time and space. This paper is constructed to choose a convenient turbine from various perspectives for developing a wind energy station. For 2 MW, the best wind turbine brands are listed based on expert interviews and literature review and they are used to establish a decision-making model with four main criteria consisting technical, economic, environmental, and customer attributes with various sub-criteria. Determining the related criteria and grouping them in main categories is the novel approach provided by this research. The constructed model can be solved by various multi-criteria decision making techniques. The selection of the best wind turbine is determined by using AHP technique. The results are significant both from engineering and economic perspective as the applied methodology is practically implementable and commercially viable. Looking at modern options of energy conservation in buildings it is necessary to assure energy efficiency first. When the energy load of a building is highly decreased, then innovative options of energy conservation can be introduced. The background and development of the main modern methods for the reduction of energy needs, final and primary energy consumption are analyzed. Differentiation between options for existing and newly constructed buildings is pointed out. Modern options of energy conservation in buildings are focused on innovative architecture, shape, structure, materials of a building and of course systems utilizing renewable energy. A very simple way of reducing building energy needs is the utilization of solar energy in a passive, but planned way. A specific shape of solar buffer space should be created in the building. In high latitude countries the buffer space should be of a specific design containing two cuboid sub-spaces with specific internal overhang and a well-planned extension of the south glazed facade. The paper presents modern renewable energy technologies as technologies with roots in past ideas of using the environment in an effective way. One of the research gaps regarding sorption systems to be used in air conditioning, is to increase their efficiency measured by the coefficient of performance (COP). This paper verifies experimentally the way to increase desiccant system performance, through the air pre-cooling in dew point evaporative cooler (DPIEC), before its dehumidification in a rotor desiccant. Experimental tests were carried out in a system consisting of a dew point evaporative cooler, a desiccant rotor, a heat source, and auxiliary equipment enabling the system to operate. The air humidity ratio decrease was determined during the summer by analyzing two operation configurations, both for Polish climatic conditions. In the first Configuration I, the outdoor air is dehumidified in the desiccant rotor, while in the second Configuration II, the outdoor air is pre-cooled in the dew point evaporative cooler before being directed to the rotor desiccant. Tests showed that the system operating Configuration II allows to obtain higher air dehumidification (from 1.4 times to 1.9 times depending on outdoor and regenerative air parameters). To establish system COP the results were supplemented with numerical calculations. It was found that the proposed pre-cooling allows to lower regeneration temperature to achieve the same dehumidification rate the regeneration temperature is decreased by 15°C. Abstract: This study examines a sample of three Asian Development Bank (ADB) energy projects to determine how they holistically address the energy sector challenges of the region. The paper firstly establishes four fundamental social and environmental sustainability principles that have influenced ADB''s new energy policy. These are (1) improving energy efficiency; (2) promoting renewable energy; (3) reducing energy poverty; and (4) enhancing climate change adaptation. These inform the policy''s new four-fold implementation strategy of scaling up renewable energy, advocating efficiency, enhancing energy access to benefit livelihoods and improving energy sector governance. The study then investigates the historical genesis, drivers, and advantages and challenges facing three recent ADB energy projects: a $76.75 million biomass power plant in Thailand, a $32.6 million energy efficiency initiative in the Philippines, and a $153.5 million program for off-grid renewables in Vietnam. The final part of the study evaluates each of these cases based on how they embody each of the four sustainability principles that uphold the new energy policy. High energy efficiency for low operating cost of desalination can be obtained from operational optimizations as well as component-wise innovations. This paper is concerned with an energy-efficient operation for reverse osmosis (RO) desalination process involving a joint control of multiple modules. Energy resource considered for desalination is of two types: intermittent solar energy and steady grid energy. With solar energy, the energy efficiency is measured by total permeate production obtained while the solar energy is available. With grid energy, the energy efficiency is measured by the power consumed to get unit permeate production rate. Achieving maximum energy efficiency is equivalent to solving constrained optimization. For the constrained optimization, obligatory constraints are given by the permissible ranges of trans-membrane pressure on RO membrane and total dissolved solids of permeate, and optional constraint is given by the permissible range of permeate production rate. Constraints as well as the objective function are modeled by the empirical second order equations in terms of control variables of multiple modules. Jointly optimal values of the control variables are found by the sequential quadratic programming. Increased competition and reduced profit margins are pushing manufacturing plants to find ways to improve operational efficiency and reduce costs. At the same time, government incentives and community initiatives are encouraging the industrial sector to pursue sustainability in operation and energy consumption. This has introduced a paradigm shift where the focus of plant operation is moving from solely cost reduction to one that considers asset management, emission control, and utilization of alternative energy resources. Mathematically speaking, the problem is changing from a single objective optimization to one with multiple objective functions that may at times be contradictory. The focus of this paper is to propose a methodology for management of an industrial plant considering the above factors. It is assumed that the plant is equipped with distributed generation (DG), and can also participate in demand response (DR). Further, the effect of ambient temperature on the lifetime and available capacity of assets such as the plant transformer has been taken into account and incorporated into their daily schedule. The objective is then to find an optimal solution for operating various workstations in such a way that it minimizes the operational costs, the emissions produced, and the loss of life of assets exposed to excess temperatures. A multi-objective optimization problem is therefore formulated through extended lexicographic goal programming, which is further modified to ensure Pareto optimality. Abstract: This paper discusses the opportunities and challenges of implementing District Heating (DH) in Canada, with focus on the network design and operation. We selected for case study an urban area in Ottawa. First, we proved that the medium-temperature district heating (MTDH) (70°C≤ T supply ≤90°C) had better energy delivery performance than high-temperature district heating (HTDH) (T supply >100°C), decreasing the heat loss by approximately 40%. The low-temperature networks (T supply <60°C) achieved even lower heat losses, but they required additional capital investment. The implementation of low-temperature district heating (LTDH) should be considered, thanks to the capability of including more renewable energy and excess industrial waste heat. Next, the simulations show that DH can be implemented to supply present heating loads with medium temperature DH, and operate in the future at low temperature, after energy saving measures have been implemented in the buildings. Areas having linear heat densities greater than 3MWh/(myr) could economically be supplied by DH. Areas with linear heat density below 1.5MWh/(myr) are considered not practically feasible with the current energy market situation in Canada. The paper discusses critical issues and quantifies the performance of design concepts for DH supply to low heat density areas. Abstract: The goal of this paper is to estimate the perspectives of the Baltic States: Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania on meeting the new European Union climate commitments, i.e., to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 20% to the year 2020 in comparison with 1990. This ambitious target could be reached based on other EU climate and energy package commitments: increase of the share of renewables and improvement of energy efficiency as tools for fulfilling the GHG emissions reduction target. The paper gives an overview on the current situation and future plans of the Baltic States in the field of energy efficiency, consumption of renewables and reduction of GHG emissions. Abstract: This paper will summarise the European Strategy for Energy and Climate Change. In current international negotiations Europe has proposed a 20% reduction in GHG (greenhouse gases) in the developed countries by 2020 or 30% should there be an international agreement in the domain. However it is important to define measures to achieve the targets. One of the principal tools is to improve energy efficiency under the energy efficiency action plan, which will help to achieve a 20% energy saving by 2020. On the other hand, the amount of energy from renewable sources consumed in Europe will have to rise from its current level of 8.5%–20% by 2020. These are ambitious but achievable targets. Nonetheless, these can only be achieved through strong investment in areas of the knowledge triangle which strengthens research and innovation in the energy sector in Europe. The paper covers European Energy and Climate Change Policy, the European Strategic Energy Technology plan, the consequences of the Lisbon Treaty, European and national Road maps to a low carbon economy, the Energy Efficiency Plan for 2011 and finishes with a brief consideration of the EU’s energy infrastructure priorities. Abstract: The rapid growth of Chinese economy has tremendously stimulated the expansion of energy consumption. The structure of energy consumption in China is featured with the coal domination. Air pollution is becoming increasingly severe. As a result, we are confronted with the extremely arduous task to balance energy consumption and environmental protection. In order to coordinate the relationship between energy consumption and environmental protection in a strategic way, this paper analyzes comprehensively the instruments, effects and perspectives of energy-related environmental management. Meanwhile, this paper illustrates the barriers and challenges facing the energy and energy-related environmental management in China, and suggests a priority strategy of management instrument, mainly composed of energy-saving, optimization of energy structure, promulgation of environmental standards, advance in environmental technologies, internalization of environmental costs, establishment of a public benefit fund and adoption of a Renewable Portfolio System. Abstract: This paper reports the outcome of the project on “Capacity building in formulating harmonized policy instruments for the promotion of Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency in the ASEAN member countries”. With the growing concerns about green house gas (GHG) emission and consequent climate change, renewable energy sources have become more attractive option for electricity generation around the world. Studies have been made on the status of renewable energy potential and utilization, major barriers in promoting renewable energy in ASEAN countries, major energy policies to overcome barriers, and existing renewable energy and energy efficiency policies in ASEAN countries. Paper concludes that ASEAN has not utilized its renewable energy resources anywhere near to the potential. Analysis found that the key factor that has to be amended is “policies and regulations in renewable energy and energy efficiency” at both country level and regional level. But, ASEAN is not yet ready for the full harmonization of the policies. However, it recommends that, with the project outputs it is possible to focus on the specific policy instruments common to most of the member countries, such that it could use to augment ASEAN Plan of Action for Energy Cooperation (APAEC) initiatives. Liquid Air Energy Storage (LAES) systems are thermal energy storage systems which take electrical and thermal energy as inputs, create a thermal energy reservoir, and regenerate electrical and thermal energy output on demand. These systems have been suggested for use in grid scale energy storage, demand side management and for facilitating an increase in renewable power integration into the current power network. This paper presents a comprehensive review of LAES systems, ranging from the first known mention of LAES systems in literature to the most recent studies. This review covers liquefaction systems, power generation systems, integrated systems (combining LAES with other industrial processes) and physical LAES plant demonstrations. Although significant analysis of LAES systems has been done to date, there remains a gap between published LAES literature, and how LAES systems would operate optimally at large scale. To bridge this gap, future LAES research should involve multivariate analysis of LAES systems under dynamic, transient conditions, with the aim of identifying and potential design implications, and to further assess the operational and economic viability of LAES systems in use at large scale. Cloud computing services have gained tremendous popularity and widespread adoption due to their flexible and on-demand nature. Cloud computing services are hosted in Cloud Data Centers (CDC) that deploy thousands of computation, storage, and communication devices leading to high energy utilization and carbon emissions. Renewable energy resources replace fossil fuels based grid energy to effectively reduce carbon emissions of CDCs. Moreover, waste heat generated from electronic components can be utilized in absorption based cooling systems to offset cooling costs of data centers. However, data centers need to be located at ideal geographical locations to reap benefits of renewable energy and waste heat recovery options. Modular Data Centers (MDC) can enable energy as a location paradigm due to their shippable nature. Moreover, workload can be transferred between intelligently placed geographically dispersed data centers to utilize renewable energy available elsewhere with virtual machine migration techniques. However, adoption of aforementioned sustainability techniques and technologies opens new challenges, such as, intermittency of power supply from renewable resources and higher capital costs. In this paper, we examine sustainable CDCs from various aspects to survey the enabling techniques and technologies. We present case studies from both academia and industry that demonstrate favorable results for sustainability measures in CDCs. Moreover, we discuss state-of-the-art research in sustainable CDCs. This paper is devoted to the development of the non-Emissions Trading Scheme for the district heating systems. To select indicators characterizing overall operation of the non-Emissions Trading Scheme district heating system, the article analyses various aspects (type of fuel, temperature regime, level of building energy efficiency) that impact the development of a district heating system model, which strives to reach 4th generation district heating system and to reduces greenhouse emission gases. To determine efficiency rating of the district heating system, a multi-criteria model is developed using selected indicators. The most suitable temperature regime of district heating systems is analyzed for a new buildings and exiting dwelling area depending on end-user heat energy consumption. Research methodology includes algorithm with several modules. The multi-criteria analysis evaluates different district heating systems and identifies optimal solution of 12 scenarios taking into account different criteria. The TOPSIS tool is integrated to find the optimal solutions. Results of the multi-criteria analysis confirm that scenario that is the closest to the ideal solution from the point of view of district heating company, sharply differs from the best scenario of the developers.
