Peer-reviewed conferences, the main publication venues in CS, rely critically on matching highly qualified reviewers for each paper. Because of the growing scale of these conferences, the tight timelines on which they operate, and a recent surge in explicitly dishonest behavior, there is now no alternative to performing this matching in an automated way. This paper introduces Large Conference Matching (LCM) , a novel reviewer–paper matching approach that was recently deployed in the 35th AAAI Conference on Artificial Intelligence (AAAI 2021), and has since been adopted (wholly or partially) by other conferences including ICML 2022, AAAI 2022-2024, and IJCAI 2022-2024. LCM has three main elements: (1) collecting and processing input data to identify problematic matches and generate reviewer–paper scores; (2) formulating and solving an optimization problem to find good reviewer–paper matchings; and (3) a two-phase reviewing process that shifts reviewing resources away from papers likely to be rejected and towards papers closer to the decision boundary. Long term annual electricity consumption forecasting is very important for country's energy planning. These forecasts are influenced by several factors (political, technological, social, environmental and economic), and brings with itself a high uncertainty degree in its results and difficulties in the evaluation of such factors over them. A methodology that eases to take into account these factors aiming improve the results and help understanding the electricity consumption annual trajectory till the forecast horizon is, therefore, very much useful and desired. So, we propose a modelling structure using the bottom-up approach to cope with these matters and to evaluate the trajectory of long term annual electricity consumption of a sector of the Brazilian industry up to 2050 considering energy efficiency (EE) scenarios. It is important to emphasize that Brazil is a developing country, and to build a bottom-up approach was a challenge, mainly due to the fact that this model is data intensive. In particular, this modelling was applied in the pulp and paper sector. The main goal was to consider technological diffusion scenarios in EE measures, and show the energy savings achieved. The papers in this issue provide an excellent example of how pertinent distinctions which emerge from analysis of significant data sets can be communicated to colleagues and used to make sense of observations. The distinctions are vividly described, illustrated and exemplified, and used to chart maturation in student use of examples from middle school, through high school and into university. Curiously, no corresponding maturation was detected in students' choice of examples to use for themselves. Contrast was detected between the way students used the same examples for comprehending a conjecture and testing its validity, and the way that some mathematicians used specifically constructed examples for locating underlying structure. What emerged for me from reading these papers is confirmation of the central role of attention, the productiveness of engaging students at the earliest ages and throughout their schooling with the detection and expression of generality, and the importance of being explicit about the scope of generality encompassed by a claim. Purposeful use of examples by students could be expected to develop as teachers explicitly use examples purposefully with and for students. A reasonable conjecture might be that getting students to be explicit about the scope of generality, of possible variation of which they are aware, might shed light on obstacles and barriers to reasoning which might otherwise lead to proof. • The Tonic Stretch Reflex Threshold is a biological biomarker of deficits in motor control. • The Tonic Stretch Reflex Threshold indicates the joint angle at and beyond which spasticity will be manifest in the muscle. • To avoid errors in evaluations of spasticity and effects of its treatment, it is necessary to use a standard methodology. The Tonic Stretch Reflex Threshold (TSRT) is the joint angle or muscle length (λ) at which muscle activation begins. In spasticity, the TSRT abnormally lies inside the biomechanical joint range. It is determined by measuring the Dynamic Stretch Reflex Thresholds (DSRTs) by stretching the resting muscle at different velocities. The metric μ , characterizes the velocity-sensitivity of the DSRTs and is expressed as the time required to lengthen the passive muscles from DSRT to TSRT at the respective stretch velocity. The original formulation of the TSRT, DSRT and μ is summarized. Then, a thorough search of literature prior to December 2023 was conducted that returned 25 papers that have used the technique. Eleven of these papers come from the research group of the authors, including 1 reporting on treatment effects. Of the remaining 14 papers, 11 report variations of the methodology with different populations and 3 report on the effects of an intervention. The review discusses how specific modifications to data collection and analysis procedures have either improved the methodology or, in some cases, led to uninterpretable results. Abstract González-Acebrón et al. (2016) attributed the coastal deposits of Torre Bermeja-La Barrosa area (Cádiz, SW Spain) to the Early Pleistocene (1.3 Ma). They also considered that an extremely high-energy event, such as a tsunami, affected the basal deposits of the sequence. In this paper, both the chronological attribution and the stratigraphic-sedimentary model are discussed. Previous information shows that Sequence 1 is late Pliocene-lowermost Early Pleistocene based on biostratigraphic, magnetostratigraphic, and regional-scale stratigraphic correlation. In addition, stratigraphic, facies, and sedimentary analyses indicate that sediments attributed to Sequence 1 were formed due to south-easternward longshore currents reworking wave- and tidal-dominated coarse-grained delta sediments deposited further to the north. The performance of the antennas, which plays an important role in millimeter-wave astronomy and space communication, is often limited by their reflector surface accuracy. Microwave holography is a fast and effective technique for measuring the surface profile of reflector antenna. In this paper, the antenna aperture phase profile is obtained by microwave holography to estimate the deviation between the reflector of the Tianma 65 m radio telescope and the ideal paraboloid. The panels of the Tianma 65 m radio telescope is in radial pattern with 14 rings. Each corner of the panel is fixed on the screw of the actuator to move up and down, and the adjacent corners of the four panels share an actuator. We use the method of plane fitting to calculate the adjustment value of every panels corner. But one actuator, which simultaneously controls the common corner of the adjacent panels, will have different adjustment values according to the plane fitting equation based on adjacent panels. In this paper, an adjustment value at the corner of the adjacent panel is obtained by plane fitting and adjustment calculation method with the antenna illumination function as the weight, that is, the optimal adjustment value of 1104 actuators of the Tianma 65 m radio telescope. Through many adjustments and the application of new algorithms, the surface accuracy of the reflector of the Tianma 65 m radio telescope has gradually improved to the current 0.24 mm. As a trending mobility choice, e-scooters have become popular in many cities. A number of authorities have initiated shared e-scooter trial schemes to assess the feasibility of the vehicles prior to enacting official legalisation. This paper aims to provide an evidence review of shared e-scooters and investigate how existing evidence may inform long-term policies. This carries significant relevance for jurisdictions that are in a conflicting position with e-scooters, such as New South Wales (NSW), Australia whose context motivates this study. The evidence review focuses on three themes derived from experience with shared e-scooters within the broader micromobility landscape, namely: safety; where shared e-scooters fit into the modal landscape; and the environmental impacts. Findings confirm that ensuring the safety of shared e-scooters requires complex solutions, which may include a clear regulatory framework for e-scooters, safety education and skill training, innovative data collection and analysis methods, and an approach to safety management that is user-based, location-based, and time-based. In terms of modal fit policymakers should encourage first and last-mile combinations with public transport, with consideration of user characteristics; while climate impact is strongly correlated to the mode replaced by e-scooter trips. Paleolimnology is a rapidly expanding field within the natural sciences. To date, many scientific papers have been published focusing on studies of remains from single sediment cores in specific lakes, or a few cores from the same water body. However, few previous publications have provided a comprehensive comparative analysis of taphocenosis (and maternal community) changes in different water bodies from a large geographical region during whole Holocene using multivariate statistical methods. We conducted a joined statistical analysis of data obtained as a result of the cladoceran analysis of the sediment samples from six cores taken along the North-South transect from the Kola Peninsula to the Karelian Region (North-West Russia). Our aim was to identify, based on quantitative statistical methods, general whole-Holocene patterns in cladoceran taphocenosis changes. All taphocenoses in all cores from six lakes can be classified into six clusters based on their species composition. Our unexpected conclusion is that different taphocoenoses are formed by the same set of species, but their proportions vary significantly. This suggests that the same species may play different functional roles in different maternal communities. During whole Holocene, we observed a single taphocenosis cluster in the Holocene core from Lake Antyukh-Lambina, and four taphocenosis clusters in the Lake Medvedevskoe, with an intermediate number of clusters in the lakes between them. Furthermore, it can be asserted that the potential for cluster changes in the core is greater for the more southern studied water bodies (0–3 clusters for northern lakes vs. 4 clusters for southern lakes). Based on our data, we hypothesize that the diversity of cladoceran associations during the Holocene was lower in Arctic/Subarctic lakes, possibly due to their formation by ubiquitous species. Our study suggests that at least some Arctic lake ecosystems have remained unchanged since deglaciation times. Further studies are necessary to determine if this is a general rule. We have performed FTIR transmission microspectroscopy on graphene oxide papers oriented with the nominal lattice planes parallel to the infrared optical axis. By polarising the IR light for samples of this geometry, spectral contributions of oriented oxide species are isolated from broad convoluted bands. Analysing the data alongside previous works, including experiments where samples were perturbed by reduction, dehydration and deuteration, we tabulate the most likely assignments for the observed spectral bands. This is the third in a short series of papers on measurement theory and practice with particular relevance to research in nursing, midwifery, and healthcare. In this paper I demonstrate how the decisions we make regarding the post hoc treatment of our measurements impact the quality of our data and influence the validity of the inferences we draw from them. I address two variations of this practice, pooling data over response options found on self-report measures, and transforming measurements of continuous variables, such as age, into ranges or ordered categories. The problems inherent in this practice are examined using concepts from information theory. Pooling more precise measurements into less precise ones creates errors of discreteness that introduce unpredictable (positive or negative) bias in our results. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: There is little doubt surrounding the benefits of the Nutrition Care Process and International Dietetics and Nutrition Terminology (IDNT) to dietetics practice; however, evidence to support the most efficient method of incorporating these into practice is lacking. The main objective of our study was to compare the efficiency and effectiveness of an electronic and a manual paper-based system for capturing the Nutrition Care Process and IDNT in a single in-center hemodialysis unit. A cohort of 56 adult patients receiving maintenance hemodialysis were followed for 12 months. During the first 6 months, patients received the usual standard care, with documentation via a manual paper-based system. During the following 6-month period (Months 7 to 12), nutrition care was documented by an electronic system. Workload efficiency, number of IDNT codes used related to nutrition-related diagnoses, interventions, monitoring and evaluation using IDNT, nutritional status using the scored Patient-Generated Subjective Global Assessment Tool of Quality of Life were the main outcome measures. Compared with paper-based documentation of nutrition care, our study demonstrated that an electronic system improved the efficiency of total time spent by the dietitian by 13 minutes per consultation. There were also a greater number of nutrition-related diagnoses resolved using the electronic system compared with the paper-based documentation (P<0.001). In conclusion, the implementation of an electronic system compared with a paper-based system in a population receiving hemodialysis resulted in significant improvements in the efficiency of nutrition care and effectiveness related to patient outcomes. Abstract: This study investigates the predictive ability of gene-expression programming (GEP) in the estimation of methane yield (Y m ) and effluent substrate (S e ) produced by two anaerobic filters. The modeling study was carried out using the data obtained from two upflow anaerobic filters – one mesophilic (35°C) and one thermophilic (55°C) – operated for the treatment of paper-mill wastewater under varying organic loadings. The GEP model was composed of three inputs, hydraulic retention time (T hr ), organic loading rate (R ol ), and influent substrate (S i ), and one output, either S e or Y m . The Stover–Kincannon model was also used for data analysis and to evaluate the prediction ability. Three statistical criteria, root mean square error (RMSE), determination coefficient (R 2), and Akaike''s information criteria (AIC), were the means used for comparison. The results showed that the GEP approach predicted the performance of both anaerobic filters much better than the Stover–Kincannon model. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Environmental regulatory edicts within the EU, such as the regulatory framework for chemicals REACH (Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals), the Water Framework Directive (WFD), and the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD) focus mainly on toxicity assessment of individual chemicals although the effect of contaminant mixtures is a matter of increasing concern. This discussion paper provides an overview of the field of combined effects in aquatic ecotoxicology and addresses some of the major challenges related to assessment of combined effects in connection with environmental risk assessment (ERA) and regulation. Potentials and obstacles related to different experimental, modelling and predictive ERA approaches are described. On-going ERA guideline and manual developments in Europe aiming to incorporate combined effects of contaminants, the use of different experimental approaches for providing combined effect data, the involvement of biomarkers to characterize Mode of Action and toxicity pathways and efforts to identify relevant risk scenarios related to combined effects are discussed. Focal point of this review is to provide a comparative display of qualitative and quantitative methodologies employed for the appraisal of interacting energy and climate policies, underlying their key features while presenting the most critical issues and limitations not addressed so far. Qualitative approaches provide a descriptive explanatory analysis of often non-quantifiable process in policy interactions, whereas modeling approaches provide numerical data estimating the extent of policy interaction impacts. Quantitative methods work best for narrowly specified policy combinations, while contextual implications and cause-impact effects are explained further via qualitative ones. In addition most evaluations so far adopt a rational view of policies and policy interactions leaving out a systemic evaluation of the institutionalism of interacting policies. Research analysis of energy and climate policy interactions is still young in comparison to the broad field of policy evaluation and impact assessment. However infants inherently tend to grow. Endeavors for a methodological framework that would allow for a systematic exchange of data between qualitative and quantitative approaches and would also include the relevance of the context as well as key casual relationships behind policy combinations, would provide the basis for further growth of knowledge in the field. Quasars are characterized by violent and large amplitude variability in all the observation wavelengths, and the analysis of optical variability is useful for developing theoretical models. Long-term optical variability data of quasar 3C 446 were collected from the University of Michigan Radio Astronomy Observatory database in the 4.8, 8.0, and 14.5 GHz radio bands from 1976 to 2012. Due to the complexity of the variability data, it's hard to study by the linear time series analysis methods. For learning more about non-linear characteristics of the temporal evolution of quasar variability, the Ensemble Empirical Mode Decomposition and nonlinear analysis are used to analyse chaotic dynamics, fractal properties, and periodicity. This paper focuses on whether there is a significant difference between the periodic and non-linear properties of the quasar variability before and after the removal of the periodic or chaotic components. It turns out that the variability of quasar 3C 446 in the radio bands consists of periodic, trend, and chaotic components, and the periodic and trend components are dominant. The periods of the variability after removing the chaotic and trend components are exactly the same as the periods of the original variability data, but the chaotic and fractal characteristics of the two are significantly different. The saturated correlation dimension indicates that the reconstruction of the dynamical system requires more independent parameters than the original optical variables after the removal of the periodic and trend components. The Kolmogorov entropy indicates that the loss of information is greater for the former than the latter, and the system is more chaotic and more complex. The Hurst value indicates that the self-similarity and long-range correlation are slightly stronger for the latter than the former. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper, we propose a novel decomposition method using elastic-band transform (EBT), which mimics eye scanning and is utilized for multiscale analysis of signals. The proposed EBT-based method can efficiently extract the features of various signals with the following three advantages. First, it is a data-driven approach that extracts several important modes based solely on data without using predetermined basis functions. Second, it does not assume that the signal consists of (locally) sinusoidal intrinsic mode functions, which is a common assumption in existing methods. Therefore, the proposed method can handle a wide range of signals. Finally, it is robust to noise. A practical algorithm for decomposition is presented, along with some theoretical properties. Estimation of variance components is essential in data analysis based on a linear mixed model. Among different estimation methods, the most commonly used in practice are likelihood-based approaches: maximum likelihood and restricted maximum likelihood. These methods do not guarantee positive-unbiased estimators, however. The method of moments ensures unbiasedness but may yield negative estimates, which can cause problems when estimating fixed effects by generalized least squares. The paper develops an algorithm to derive strictly positive unbiased estimators with minimum variance in a well-defined class. The key idea is to take the method-of-moments estimator, given by a quadratic form of a symmetric matrix A , as a starting point and modify it using the class of square non-singular regularization matrices Q while preserving unbiasedness in addition to ensuring positivity. Different subclasses of structured Q are possible for convenience instead of all possible Q matrices. A search algorithm then finds a local or global optimal matrix A depending on Q and the corresponding optimal variance component estimator by minimizing the variance, a function of the unknown variance components and kurtosis parameters in the model. Availability of an optimal matrix A means that the theoretical and numerical properties of the estimator can be conveniently studied, also in small samples. The proposed method further allows finding matrices A leading to quadratic forms closely approximating the corresponding numerical values of the likelihood-based estimates. The paper investigates the dependence of variance functions on the unknown model parameters. Using two illustrative examples, Examples I and II, the paper also illustrates the use of the matrix Q and the determination of the kurtosis parameters in the search for the optimal variance component estimators by keeping the bias zero and the variance trim for the bias–variance trade-offs. Abstract: We appreciate that our attempt to document deformation pattern within the Mesoproterozoic Singhora Group, India, and to resolve some key stratigraphic issues in Chhattisgarh geology (Patranabis-Deb and Chaudhuri, 2008; Dhang and Patranabis-Deb, 2012), in recent times, has attracted the attention of Deb. We whole heartedly welcome the keen interest shown by Deb in our paper and discussions attempted by him on different aspects of the paper. Here we offer our strong rebuttal of his imaginative discussions, principally because the claims made by Deb are neither supported by outcrop-based field data nor through any available subsurface geophysical data. It appears that the key concern of Deb (2013) was to force-fit the structural grains of the Sonakhan greenstone belt within the deformation pattern of Singhora cover sediments, upholding an unsubstantiated assumption that the Sonakhan greenstones belt constitutes the basement for the Singhora basin. Without citing any evidence (outcrop, geophysical or bore hole) showing Sonakhan metamorphics in the basement of the Singhora basin, he plotted the structural data of the Sonakhan Greenstone Belt and attempted comparison of those with the bedding attitudes of the Singhora cover sediments, and claimed that the possible rejuvenation of basement faults triggered folding in the Singhora cover sediments. Leaving aside the issues of lack of any field support, available geophysical results (3 layer gravity survey by Srinivas et al. (2000); magnetic survey by Srinivas et al. (2004)) and short borehole observations (pers. comm., Mukherjee, A., 2012) – all clearly demonstrates unclassified Archean/Paleoproterozoic granites and gneisses of the Bastar craton as basement for the Singhora Basin, not the Sonakhan Greenstones. Neither is the presence of any basin-scale fault inferred from the basement of the Singhora basin in any geophysical model. The result of magnetic survey along the Basna–Sohela transect carried out by Srinivas et al. (2004), which represents the Singhora basement in particular, clearly shows granites as immediate basement for the Singhora. As the very assumption of Deb (2013) i.e., that the Sonakhan represents the basement to the Singhora basin, does not stand either on his own field data or on any strong reasoning, we refrain from any further discussion on this topic. Instead, we frame our reply on the doubts raised by Deb (2013) on the mapping, field analysis and concepts used in our paper (Saha et al., 2013). [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Self-monitoring has traditionally been done using a paper record, which can be tedious and burdensome. A personal digital assistant (PDA) with dietary software can provide an alternative to a paper record. The study aimed to describe the differences in dietary changes at 6 months between participants randomly assigned to use a paper record or PDA for self-monitoring in a clinical trial of weight-loss treatment. Self-monitoring adherence and changes in weight and diet were assessed between 2006 and 2009. The sample (n=192) was 84% female and 78% white, with a mean age of 49 years and body mass index (calculated as kg/m2) of 34.1. At baseline, the groups did not differ in energy intake, percent calories from fat, and number of servings of the examined food groups. At 6 months, both groups had significant reductions in weight, energy intake, and percent calories from total fat and saturated fatty acids (P<0.001); no between-group differences were found. Compared to the paper record group, the PDA group significantly increased consumption of fruit (P=0.02) and vegetables (P=0.04) and decreased consumption of refined grains (P=0.02). Interactions among self-monitoring and the two groups were found in relation to changes in percent calories from total fat (P=0.02), monounsaturated fatty acids (P=0.002), and trans-fatty acids (P=0.04). Frequent self-monitoring was significantly associated with total sugar (P=0.02) and added sugar (P=0.01) intake in both groups. Our findings suggest that use of a PDA for self-monitoring might improve self-awareness of behavior and dietary changes. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Data collection for the purposes of analysis, after the planning and execution of a research study, commences with data input and validation. The process of data entry and analysis may appear daunting to the uninitiated, but as pointed out in the 1970s in a series of papers by British Medical Journal Deputy Editor TDV Swinscow, modern hardware and software (he was then referring to the availability of hand calculators) permits the performance of statistical testing outside a computer laboratory. In this day and age, modern software, such as the ubiquitous and almost universally familiar Microsoft Excel™ greatly facilitates this process. This first paper comprises the first of a collection of papers which will emulate Swinscow's series, in his own words, "addressed to readers who want to start at the beginning, not to those who are already skilled statisticians." These papers will have less focus on the actual arithmetic, and more emphasis on how to actually implement simple statistics, step by step, using Excel, thereby constituting the equivalent of Swinscow's papers in the personal computer age. Data entry can be facilitated by several underutilised features in Excel. In this article I discuss reliability, its origins in classic measurement theory, important issues to consider when operationally defining reliability for a particular study, correlational procedures for assessing the reliability of data once collected, including test-retest reliability, split-half reliability, and Cronbach's coefficient a. Abstract: Botulinum toxin, frequently used to manage focal limb spasticity, has been reported to affect both extrafusal and intrafusal fibers of the injected muscle. Since most studies have used spinal reflexes, it is difficult to isolate the intrafusal effects from extrafusal and central effects. In a paper by On et al. [7], both stretch and H-reflexes were used to examine the intrafusal effects of botulinum toxin injections. Revisiting the data from On et al. [7] presented a unique opportunity to describe a novel method of measuring the effect of botulinum toxin-A on muscle spindle activity in patients with spasticity. H-reflex, maximum M-wave, and Achilles tendon reflex were serially assessed in ten patients with stroke pre-, 2, 4, and 12 weeks post-botulinum. In order to assess the intrafusal effects, we subtracted the %change in H-reflex amplitude from baseline (representing extrafusal and central effects) from the %change in Achilles tendon reflex amplitude from baseline (representing intrafusal, extrafusal and central effects). Using this formula, our results suggest that botulinum induces significant chemodenervation of the intrafusal muscle fibers (33% decreases). Intrafusal effects were greatest at 2 weeks, but tapered off by 12 weeks post-botulinum (p <0.017). We found a significant positive correlation between the intrafusal effects of botulinum toxin and changes in modified Ashworth scale. Our method of assessing the effects of botulinum toxin shows significant effect on intrafusal fibers, which correlates with clinical manifestation of spasticity. Future studies need to investigate ways to maximize intrafusal effects and minimize extrafusal effects of botulinum therapy. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Convergent plate boundaries around the globe show a high degree of structural complexity and variability in site-specific geometry and mass flux. The heterogeneity in the structural evolution, the interior regime as well as external architecture of individual margins is reflected in their seismic character, resulting in a segmentation along-strike as well as along-dip. Subduction zones generate more than 80% of global earthquakes above magnitude 8.0, but rupture characteristics are highly individual and linked to margin specific geometrical conditions. Major segments of subduction zones are commonly submerged in deep water and difficult to access at the majority of margins. Marine geophysical techniques, which are able to image the complex structures in these settings with sufficient coherency and depth penetration, have proven crucial to improve our knowledge on the geological framework of the different types of subduction zones. The aim of this review paper is to unravel the structural diversity of convergent margins and between individual subduction zone segments. Field data from different margins around the globe deliver images of the seafloor and subsurface in unprecedented resolution, which show segmentation to be far more complex than previously inferred. Along-strike segmentation results in accretionary segments contiguous to erosive segments along a single margin. Modes of mass transfer must hence be viewed as transient processes dependent on sediment supply and lower plate structure. Along-strike segment boundaries commonly correlate with underthrusting lower plate relief that controls the deep deformation of a subduction zone and the spatial and temporal variations in slip behavior. Examples of underthrusting oceanic basement relief at different stages of subduction elucidate their impact on the inner geometry of the margin. Lower plate heterogeneities occur at subduction zones worldwide and thus pose a common phenomenon, whose role as barriers to seismic rupture constitute a central control on subduction zone seismicity and segmentation. This paper outlines an example of Special Collections materials being used to support master's-level students' data and digital skills development. It evidences positive student learning outcomes through an unconventional interdepartmental collaboration between a digital media teaching team and Special Collections staff, which combined digital practices and tangible Special Collections material. This paper outlines the readings used for the course under review, the assignments used to evaluate students, student experiences of those assignments, and staff observations of student success and the logistics of course delivery. Findings show that in completing their assignments students (a) negotiated uncertainty; (b) increased understandings of data and digital methods; (c) embraced the lifeworlds of data; and (d) blurred the boundaries of analog and digital. More generally, this work finds that Special Collections material can be effectively used to support data and digital skills development, as well as help students gain broader understandings of digital contexts and media. Value is, however, dependent upon embracing uncertainty: something that universities tend to avoid. But, as is shown, staff and students alike can thrive in states of bewilderment. Pivot tables permit users to dynamically summarise and cross-tabulate data, create tables in several dimensions, offer a range of summary statistics and can be modified interactively with instant outputs. Large and detailed datasets are thereby easily manipulated making pivot tables arguably the best way to explore, summarise and present data from many different angles. A sensitive and simple nanomaterial based colorimetric sensor array (NBCSA) was developed for discrimination of monofloral honey from various European countries based on three botanical origins as Acacia, Canola and Honeydew. The NBCSA was designed by spotting gold (AuNPs) and silver (AgNPs) nanoparticles synthesized using six different reducing and/or capping agents. The colour intensity of AuNPs represented differential changes when interacting with volatile organic compounds appeared in the headspace of the honey samples. The color difference maps, which are calculated as the difference between color intensity of the sensor before and after exposing to the sample vapors, were used as a fingerprint to discriminate the honey samples based on botanical origin. Classification was achieved utilizing data pre-processing and chemometrics data analysis. Fitting accuracies of 88% and 86% were obtained by partial least squares discriminant analysis and linear discriminant analysis whereas 100% was achieved using support vector machine. As an effective nonparametric method, empirical likelihood (EL) is appealing in combining estimating equations flexibly and adaptively for incorporating data information. To select important variables and estimating equations in a sparse high-dimensional model, a penalized EL method based on robust estimating functions is proposed for regularizing the regression parameters and the associated Lagrange multipliers simultaneously, which allows the dimensionality of both regression parameters and estimating equations to grow exponentially with the sample size. A first inspection on the robustness of estimating equations contributing to variable selection is discussed from both theoretical perspective and intuitive simulation results in this paper. The proposed method can improve the robustness and effectiveness when the data have underlying outliers or heavy tails in the response variables and/or covariates. The robustness of the estimator is measured via the bounded influence function, and the oracle properties are also established under some regularity conditions. Extensive simulation studies and yeast cell data are used to evaluate the performance of the proposed method. Much statistical teaching and many research reports focus on the 'null hypothesis significance test'. Yet the correct meaning and interpretation of statistical significance tests is elusive. Misinterpretations are both common and persistent, leading many to question whether significance tests should be used at all. While most take aim at the arbitrary declaration of p < 0.05 as a threshold for determining 'significance', others extend the critique to suggest the 'p-value' should be dispensed with entirely. P-values and significance tests are still widely used as if they give a measure of the size and importance of relationships, even though this misunderstanding has been observed and discussed for many years. We argue that p-values and significance tests are intrinsically misleading. Point estimates of relationships and confidence intervals give direct information about the effect and the uncertainty of the estimate without recourse to interpreting how a particular p-value might have arisen or indeed referring to them at all. In this paper we briefly outline some of the problems with significance testing, offer a number of examples selected from a recent issue of the International Journal of Nursing Studies and discuss some proposed responses to these problems. We conclude by offering some guidance to authors reporting statistical tests in journals and present a position statement that has been adopted by the International Journal of Nursing Studies to guide its' authors in reporting the results of statistical analyses. While stopping short of calling for an outright ban on reporting p-values and significance tests we urge authors (and journals) to place more emphasis on measures of effect and estimates of precision/uncertainty and, following the position of the American Statistical Association, emphasise that authors (and readers) should avoid using 0.05 or any other cut off for a p-value as the basis for a decision about the meaningfulness/importance of an effect. If point estimates and confidence intervals are used, then the p-value may be redundant and can be omitted from reports. When authors talk about 'significance' they need to be explicit when referring to statistical significance and we recommend authors adopt the language of 'importance' when talking about effect sizes to avoid any confusion. Only rigorous evaluation of competence will result in the production of safe surgeons that are able to provide the best care for patients. The development of competency-based assessment should ultimately be evidence driven. Explore the volume of existing evidence pertaining to the different objective assessment methods reported in the literature. Studies describing objective assessment of postgraduate general surgical trainees within the last 20 years. PubMed, Ovid Medline and Web of Sciences. A data chart proforma was designed and data were extracted into tables. Basic numerical analysis of extracted data and narrative synthesis of charted data. A total of 343 papers were reviewed. 26 were eligible for inclusion. 92% of articles were published from 2008 onwards. 50% have been published in the last five years. The articles originated from 6 different countries, predominantly the United Kingdom (42%), followed by the United States of America (38%). In addition, a small number were published from Canada (8%), Japan (4%), Germany (4%) and Australia (4%). UK publications were predominantly between 2008 and 2014 while the USA had a later predominance between 2015 and 2018. 42% were based on quantitative methodology, 27% had a qualitative approach while 31% had mixed analysis. There were sixteen assessment methods presented. The most common type of assessment was Objective Structured Assessments (27%), which included Objective Structured Assessment of Technical Skill (OSATS) (23%) and Objective Structured Assessment of Non-Technical Skill (4%). Procedure Based Assessment (PBA) (23%) and Entrustability Scales (23%) were also prevalent. This scoping review has identified a range of different assessment methods. The assessment methods with a higher volume and level of supporting evidence were OSATS, PBAs and Entrustability Scales. This paper aims to discuss the features and development trends of China Academic Social Sciences and Humanities Library's (CASHL) internet-based document delivery service, examine the journal usage patterns of CASHL member libraries and determine the time range trends of documents requested by users. Ten years of the CASHL's document delivery service transaction data (about 860,000 items) were extracted, cleaned, integrated, and analysed. Journal use pattern is more decentralised and individualised. Request rates for older papers are continuing to increase. One of the main concerns was predicting a comprehensive GT model, including intake, exit, and power-generator characteristics. Hence, this study provides a comprehensive review of GT's main components, parameters, faults, and predicting models using machine learning and data mining applications. Forty-four publications between 2014 and 2023 were chosen for this review study based on the primary keywords associated with the paper title. This study focuses solely on the GT model prediction aspects, considering the significance of field distribution, applications of data mining, research goals, benefits, constraints, and contributions to aviation, the oil and gas industry, and marine propulsion fields. Based on the examined studies, ANN, ELM, and KF applications show promise for potential GT life management. The typical limitations of GT life prediction, as observed in 93.2% of the review papers, involved the absence of a comprehensive GT model that incorporates all vibration factors and the use of substantial amounts of real data for predictive modelling. Another notable finding that underscores the knowledge gap in this area is the utilization of complete GT units to monitor unit life and facilitate life management. Cybersecurity threats are constantly evolving and becoming increasingly sophisticated, automated, adaptive, and intelligent. This makes it difficult for organizations to defend their digital assets. Industry professionals are looking for solutions to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of cybersecurity operations, adopting different strategies. In cybersecurity, the importance of developing new intrusion detection systems (IDSs) to address these threats has emerged. Most of these systems today are based on machine learning. But these systems need high-quality data to "learn" the characteristics of malicious traffic. Such datasets are difficult to obtain and therefore rarely available. This paper advances the state of the art and presents a new high-quality IDS dataset. The dataset originates from Locked Shields, one of the world's most extensive live-fire cyber defense exercises. This ensures that (i) it contains realistic behavior of attackers and defenders; (ii) it contains sophisticated attacks; and (iii) it contains labels, as the actions of the attackers are well-documented. The dataset includes approximately 16 million network flows, [F3] of which approximately 1.6 million were labeled malicious. What is unique about this dataset is the use of a new labeling technique that increases the accuracy level of data labeling. We evaluate the robustness of our dataset using both quantitative and qualitative methodologies. We begin with a quantitative examination of the Suricata IDS alerts based on signatures and anomalies. Subsequently, we assess the reproducibility of machine learning experiments conducted by Känzig et al., who used a private Locked Shields dataset. We also apply the quality criteria outlined by the evaluation framework proposed by Gharib et al. As interest grows in facilitating, funding, and investigating inclusive innovation processes in agrifood systems in the Global South, a need has emerged for middle-range theory that can describe the key features and causal dynamics of these processes across diverse contexts. This paper advances theory-building by testing and refining an existing middle-range theory of inclusive innovation processes in agrifood systems in the Global South through a case study of an inclusive innovation process involving smallholder farming communities in the Ecuadorian Andes. We used a case study replication design to test the initial theory. To develop the case study, we conducted primary qualitative research, including interviews, informal personal communications, and document reviews. Data analysis was conducted in two phases: in the first phase, we developed a timeline and causal narrative of the case and in the second phase, we conducted inductive and deductive thematic analysis. We find that each component of the existing middle-range model played an important role, as predicted, in the inclusive innovation process described in the case study. Our analysis also reveals additional component categories, including process inputs, initial contextual conditions, and actor-level mechanisms, that featured prominently in the case but were omitted from the existing theory. The case also revealed a more nuanced, phased causal dynamic than that described in the existing middle-range model and identified intermediate pilot results as boundary objects that expanded the inclusivity of the innovation process and triggered the causal dynamics predicted by the existing theory. Our findings inform a revision to the existing mid-level model, contributing to building an empirically validated theory of how inclusive innovation processes unfold in agrifood systems that sheds light on specific features of these processes that are important for promoting inclusivity. Visual querying of location-based data assists users in expressing query requirements, investigating query results and making inferences. However, directly accessing data records exposes individual location information and may cause privacy issues. Conventional aggregation-based methods can preserve location-relevant privacy but may lead to the loss of detailed information and failure of analysis. Visualization aids users in gaining a deeper comprehension of the query process and the variation of information concerning privacy-preservation. In this paper, we present a privacy-aware visual query approach for location-based data. We propose a graph-based privacy-preserving scheme to protect location privacy in the visualization, and two visual metaphors to enhance understandings of information-variation in the privacy-preserving process. We design and implement a visual interface that supports a progressive process of query conditions specification and query results exploration. Experiments on real-world urban datasets demonstrate that our approach is capable of making a fair balance between location privacy and data analysis. This paper describes the method of using the optical telescope to assist the Tianma 13 m radio telescope for pointing measurement and establishing the pointing error correction model. For small-aperture telescopes, there are few target sources for pointing and calibration, and it is difficult to establish a pointing model by radio method to cover the whole sky area. The Tianma 13 m radio telescope of Shanghai Astronomical Observatory is used to conduct optical-assisted pointing measurement research. A set of optical pointing system was installed on the back frame of Tianma 13 m antenna, which obtained a repeatable measurement accuracy better than 3". In addition, through the analysis of the factors affecting the antenna pointing, a pointing error correction model containing 8 error terms, as well as the optical axis and electrical axis deviation models were established. The pointing model was brought into the antenna servo control system to cross-scan the calibration target radio source, and a pointing error of about 5" was obtained. Since hybrid hydrogen-gasoline fueling stations store two types of hazardous chemicals, the number of victims might be substantially higher than at gas or hydrogen fueling stations during a leakage or explosion. Therefore, it is crucial to conduct an in-depth analysis and risk assessment of hybrid hydrogen-gasoline fueling stations. We establish a time series risk assessment model and use complex network analysis to analyze potential fire and explosion events in hybrid hydrogen-gasoline fueling stations. The complex network model is used to assess the structural characteristics of the complex hybrid hydrogen-gasoline fueling stations, extract the accident causal chain, and explain the relationship between the accident causal factors and the system's risk from a multi-dimensional perspective. Subsequently, time-ordered weighted averaging (TOWA) and time-ordered weighted geometric averaging (TOWGA) operators are incorporated into the complex network model. The TOWA-TOWGA hybrid operator combines the evaluation values of the summer and winter periods to obtain the dynamic risk assessment results. The static and dynamic assessment results are used to determine the degree of influence of the accident causal factors on the system risk in different periods and dimensions. Quantifying patterns in visual or tactile textures provides important information about the process or phenomena that generated these patterns. In manufacturing, these patterns can be intentionally introduced as a design feature, or they can be a byproduct of a specific process. Since surface texture has significant impact on the mechanical properties and the longevity of the workpiece, it is important to develop tools for quantifying surface patterns and, when applicable, comparing them to their nominal counterparts. While existing tools may be able to indicate the existence of a pattern, they typically do not provide more information about the pattern structure, or how much it deviates from a nominal pattern. Further, prior works do not provide automatic or algorithmic approaches for quantifying other pattern characteristics such as depths' consistency, and variations in the pattern motifs at different level sets. This paper leverages persistent homology from Topological Data Analysis (TDA) to derive noise-robust scores for quantifying motifs' depth and roundness in a pattern. Specifically, sublevel persistence is used to derive scores that quantify the consistency of indentation depths at any level set in Piezo Vibration Striking Treatment (PVST) surfaces. Moreover, we combine sublevel persistence with the distance transform to quantify the consistency of the indentation radii, and to compare them with the nominal ones. Although the tool in our PVST experiments had a semi-spherical profile, we present a generalization of our approach to tools/motifs of arbitrary shapes thus making our method applicable to other pattern-generating manufacturing processes.
