Context: Analyzing flick movement kinematics biomechanically is important to prevent sport-related injuries in underwater hockey players since the aquatic-based flick movement is completely different from land-based flick movements. The study aimed to describe the flick movement kinematic biomechanically in underwater hockey players. Moreover, this study further aimed to investigate the effect of the Thrower's Ten exercises on flick movement kinematics in underwater hockey players. Design: Descriptive laboratory study. Methods: Seventeen underwater hockey players (age: 26.2 [4.3] y; sports age: 6.2 [4.5] y) were included. First, 2 underwater cameras using motion capture video analysis MATLAB were used to biomechanically analyze the angular changes on the shoulder, elbow, wrist, and body while players were performing the flick movements. Players were then recruited to the Thrower's Ten exercise program for 6 weeks. Flick movement kinematics and flick-throwing distance were recorded at baseline and 6 weeks. Results: The flick movement kinematic patterns demonstrated increased shoulder flexion (from 102.5° to 144.9°), wrist extension (from 9.5° to 10.8°), and upper-extremity rotation (from 5.7° to 56.8°) while decreased elbow extension (from 107.7° to 159.2°) from the stick met the puck until the competition of the movement. The Thrower's Ten exercises improved the elbow extension (P =.04), wrist extension (P =.01), body rotation (P <.001), and flick-throwing distance (P <.001) from baseline to 6 weeks. Conclusion: This study describes the underwater flick kinematic technique biomechanically and interprets preliminary findings for the first time. Thus, 6 weeks of Thrower's Ten exercise program provides more body muscle movements than the smaller ones during the flick movements and higher flick-throwing distance in underwater hockey players. Context: The best current evidence supports the effectiveness of neuromuscular training in reducing the risk of injury; however, the rate of anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries is still high. Neurocognitive training (NT) has successfully improved biomechanical risk factors, but they have been considered in only a few studies. Objective: To review the literature to determine the effect of NT on biomechanical risk factors related to ACL injury in athletes. Evidence Acquisition: We searched PubMed, Google Scholar, Scopus, Science Direct, and the Physiotherapy Evidence Database from inception to August 2011. We included randomized controlled trials that used motor learning approaches and injury prevention programs to investigate kinematic and kinetic risk factors related to ACL injury. The quality of each clinical trial study was evaluated by the Physiotherapy Evidence Database scale. The eligibility criteria were checked based on the PICOS (population, intervention, comparison, outcome, and study type) framework. Evidence Synthesis: A total of 9 studies were included in the final analysis. Motor learning approaches include internal and external focus of attention, dual tasks, visual motor training, self-control feedback, differential learning, and linear and nonlinear pedagogy, combined with exercise programs. In most of the studies that used NT, a significant decrease in knee valgus; tibial abduction and external rotation; ground reaction force; and an increase in knee-, trunk-, hip-, and knee-flexion moment was observed. Conclusion: In classical NT, deviation from the ideal movement pattern especially emphasizing variability and self-discovery processes is functional in injury prevention and may mitigate biomechanical risk factors of ACL injuries in athletes. Practitioners are advised to use sport-specific cognitive tasks in combination with neuromuscular training to simulate loads of the competitive environment. Context: Anterior cruciate ligament injuries are directly related to the control of dynamic knee valgus in the landing of a jump, and this is mainly due to the correct activation and neuromuscular function of the lower-extremity muscles. The aim of the study is to assess the relationship between lower limb muscle activity during a single-legged drop jump and knee frontal plane projection angle (FPPA). Design: A correlation study. Methods: Thirty healthy collegiate female athletes were included in the study. Main outcomes measures were peak knee FPPA and muscle activity (% of maximal voluntary isometric contraction). Peak knee FPPA during a single-legged drop jump test was identified using a 2-dimensional motion analysis system. Muscle activity was assessed using a surface electromyograph for gluteus maximus, gluteus medius, biceps femoris, semitendinosus, vastus medialis quadriceps, vastus lateralis quadriceps, medial gastrocnemius, and lateral gastrocnemius. All variables were assessed for both dominant and nondominant limbs. A correlation analysis between peak knee FPPA and muscle activity was performed. Statistical significance was set at P <.05. Results: A mean peak knee FPPA of 14.52° and 13.38° was identified for dominant and nondominant limb single-legged drop jump test, respectively. Muscle activity (% of maximal voluntary isometric contraction) for muscles assessed ranged from 43.97% to 195.71% during the single-legged drop jump test. The correlation analysis found no significant correlation between any of the muscles assessed and peak knee FPPA during the single-legged drop jump test (Pearson coefficient between −.3 and.1). Conclusions: There is no association between muscle activity from the lower limb muscles and the knee FPPA during a single-legged drop jump in female athletes. The present randomized study investigated the effect of acute supplementation of 800 mg/kg of ketone monoester ingestion (KE) or placebo (PL) and 210 mg/kg of NaHCO3 co-ingestion on cycling performance of WorldTour cyclists during a road cycling stage simulation. Twenty-eight cyclists participated in the study (27.46 ± 4.32 years; 1.80 ± 0.06 m; 69.74 ± 6.36 kg). Performance, physiological, biochemical, and metabolism outcomes, gut discomfort, and effort perceived were assessed during a road cycling simulation composed of an 8-min time-trial (TT) performance + 30-s TT + 4.5 hr of outdoor cycling + a second 8-min TT + a second 30-s TT. Greater absolute and relative mean power during the first 8-min TT (F = 5.067, p =.033, η p 2 =.163 , F = 5.339, p =.029, η p 2 =.170 , respectively) was observed after KE than after PL (KE: 389 ± 34, PL: 378 ± 44 W, p =.002, d = 0.294 and KE: 5.60 ± 0.42, PL: 5.41 ± 0.44 W/kg, p =.001, d = 0.442). Additionally, greater concentration of β-hydroxybutyrate blood concentration (F = 42.195, p <.001, η p 2 =.619) was observed after KE than after PL during the first steps of the stage (e.g., after warm-up KE: 1.223 ± 0.642, PL: 0.044 ± 0.058 mM, p <.001, d = 2.589), although the concentrations returned to near baseline after 4.5 hr of outdoor cycling. Moreover, higher values of anion gap were observed (F = 2.333, p =.026, η p 2 =.080) after KE than after PL ingestion, after the warm-up and after the first 8-min and 30-s TT. Additionally, lower concentrations of HCO 3 − were reported in the KE condition after warm-up and after the first 8-min and 30-s TT. During the initial phase of the stage simulation, acute supplementation with KE + NaHCO3 co-ingestion enhanced 8-min TT cycling performance (3.1%) in WorldTour cyclists with a concomitant hyperketonaemia. At present, ginkgo leaves are still picked manually. A brush roller ginkgo leaf picker has been designed to improve harvesting efficiency and reduce losses caused by manual failure to pick leaves in time under large-scale planting areas. The ginkgo leaf picker is mainly composed of crawler chassis, gantry frame, brush roller picking parts, and collecting box. The kinematics of the brush roller are analyzed for the picking omission situation. An experimental platform for picking ginkgo biloba leaves was established. Three parameters, namely roller speed, moving speed, and roller inclination were selected for optimization. Then the maximum net harvest rate and the minimum damage rate were achieved. The orthogonal test showed that when the roller speed was 130 rev/min, the moving speed was 0.25 m/s, and the roller inclination was 32°, the picking effect was the best, the net harvest rate was 93.32%, the damage rate was 1.42%, and the damage degree of the trunks was slight. The experiment proved that the brush-roller ginkgo leaf picker has a good picking effect, which can provide a reference for the optimization design of ginkgo leaf harvesting machinery under the dwarf dense planting mode. In this study, we present a method for estimating the viscoelasticity of a leaf-spring sports prosthesis using advanced energy minimizing inverse kinematics based on the Piece-wise Constant Strain (PCS) model to reconstruct the three-dimensional dynamic behavior. Dynamic motion analysis of the athlete and prosthesis is important to clarify the effect of prosthesis characteristics on foot function. However, three-dimensional deformation calculations of the prosthesis and viscoelasticity have rarely been investigated. In this letter, we apply the PCS model to a prosthesis deformation, which can calculate flexible deformation with low computational cost and handle kinematics and dynamics. In addition, we propose an inverse kinematics calculation method that is consistent with the material properties of the prosthesis by considering the minimization of elastic energy. Furthermore, we propose a method to estimate the viscoelasticity by solving a quadratic programming based on the measured motion capture data. The calculated strains are more reasonable than the results obtained by conventional inverse kinematics calculation. From the result of the viscoelasticity estimation, we simulate the prosthetic motion by forward dynamics calculation and confirm that this result corresponds to the measured motion. Background: To study the effects of different interventions on automatic gait processing in contrast with voluntary gait processing in healthy subjects. Methods: A double-blind randomised controlled trial was designed (120 able-body persons between 18 and 65 years old entered and completed the study), with pre-intervention and post-intervention assessments using the 6-Minute Walk Test (6MWT). The participants were randomly distributed into four groups. Prior to intervention, all participants performed voluntary gait on the ground (VoG) in a calibrated circuit following the 6MWT. The presence of automatic gait (AG) was explored post-intervention without a voluntary demand in the same circuit following the 6MWT. Each group received a different intervention for 30 min: Vojta stimulation, MOTOMED® at no less than 60 revolutions/minute, treadmill walking at 3 km/h, and resting in a chair (control). The main assessment, conducted by a blinded rater, was the difference in distance covered (in meters) during the 6MWT between pre- and post-intervention. Surface electromyography (sEMG) average root mean square (RMS) signals in the right tibialis anterior, right soleus, right rectus femoris, and right biceps femoris were also considered outcome measures. Results: The Vojta group was the only one that initiated AG after the intervention (476.4 m ± 57.1 in VoG versus 9.0 m ± 8.9 in AG, p < 0.001) with comparable kinematics and EMG parameters during voluntary gait, except for ankle dorsal flexion. Within the Vojta group, high variability in kinematics, sEMG activity, and distance covered was observed. Conclusions: AG isolation is approachable through Vojta at only one session measurable with the 6MWT without any voluntary gait demand. Background: Lower back pain (LBP) is a disability that affects a large proportion of the population and treatment for this condition has been shifting towards a more individualized, patient-centered approach. There has been a recent uptake in the utilization and implementation of wearable sensors that can administer biofeedback in various industrial, clinical, and performance-based settings. Despite this, there is a strong need to investigate how wearable sensors can be used in a sensorimotor (re)training approach, including how sensory biofeedback from wearable sensors can be used to improve measures of spinal motor control and proprioception. Research question: The purpose of this scoping review was to examine the wide range of wearable sensor-mediated biofeedback frameworks currently being utilized to enhance spine posture and motor function. Methods: A comprehensive scoping review was conducted in adherence with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses Guidelines extension for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA-ScR) across the following databases: Embase, PubMed, Scopus, Cochrane, and IEEEXplore. Articles related to wearable biofeedback and spine movement were reviewed dated from 1980 - 2020. Extracted data was collected as per a predetermined checklist including the type, timing, trigger, location, and magnitude of sensory feedback being applied to the body. Results: A total of 23 articles were reviewed and analysed. The most used wearable sensor to inform biofeedback were inertial measurement units (IMUs). Haptic (vibrotactile) feedback was the most common sensory stimulus. Most studies used an instantaneous online trigger to initiate sensory feedback derived from information pertaining to gross lumbar angles or the absolute orientations of the thorax or pelvis. Conclusions: This is the first study to review wearable sensor-derived sensory biofeedback to modulate spine motor control. Although the type of wearable sensor and feedback were common, this study highlights the lack of consensus regarding the timing and structure of sensory feedback, suggesting the need to optimize any sensory feedback to a specific use case. The findings from this study help to improve the understanding surrounding the ecological utility of wearable sensor-mediated biofeedback in industrial, clinical, and performance settings to enhance the sensorimotor control of the lumbar spine. This study aimed to determine kinematic and kinetic key performance indicators (KPI) of swimming turn performance using principal component analysis (PCA) and multiple linear regression analysis and provide reference values using percentiles. Touch and tumble turn performances of male (n = 68) and female (n = 48) Swiss national team members from three age categories—adult (20.2 ± 2.7 yrs, 790 ± 57 points), junior (16.2 ± 0.8 yrs, 729 ± 53 points) and youth swimmers (14.4 ± 1.0 years of age, 667 ± 53 World Aquatics swimming points, respectively)—were assessed with a motion analysis system equipped with a force plate on the pool wall, one over- and four underwater cameras sampling forces at 500 Hz and footages at 100 Hz. The PCA reduced the 27 original variables by up to 15% depending on turn type and age category using Varimax component loading of >0.6 and explained up to 91% of the total variance. The highest Varimax component loadings for each principal component were used to determine KPI for each turn type and age category using multiple-regression analysis with total turn time as dependent variable. These KPI should be used to interpret turn performances and identify individual swimmers’ strengths, weaknesses and future potentials with the help of the percentiles as reference values. The aim of the study was to examine whether the width of the base of support (BOS) has an influence on early postural adjustments (EPA) and armed upper limb and COM kinematics during lunging. Eight elite female fencers participated in the study. The displacement of the centre of foot pressure (COP) and kinematics of centre of mass (COM) were recorded using force platforms. The kinematics of the wrist of the armed upper limb were obtained using a 3D accelerometer. The results show that EPA were characterised by a very small COP displacement (about 0.6 to 1.2 cm). The COP amplitude showed a tendency to decrease with an increase in BOS width under reaction time conditions. In contrast, a greater BOS width was associated with a significant increase in COM acceleration at foot-off and peak COM acceleration during lunging also under reaction time instructions. The kinematics of the wrist were not influenced by BOS. The results show that in elite fencers, the upper limb movement is dissociated from the whole body movement. We suppose that a small COP amplitude is a postural skill which is integrated into the lunging skill and might influence the acceleration of COM. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Rail-sanding is employed to improve the train's wheel–rail traction loss in low adhesion conditions. This can significantly impede trains' kinematics, operation, and performance by hindering the train's acceleration and deceleration, resulting in delays and unreliability of transport system as well as causing safety risks and in the worst cases train collisions. Rail-sanding has its own merits in recovering the wheel–rail traction but can result in a sand wastage of more than 80% due to its low sand entrainment efficiency. In this research, computational fluid dynamics is coupled to discrete element modelling to study the behaviour of sand particles during rail-sanding. A parametric study based on the train characteristics, including train velocity, sand flow rate, and the geometry of the sander nozzle, is performed by comparing the entrainment efficiency of the sand particles. It is found that train velocities over 30 m/s result in the entrainment efficiency of almost zero. A moving air layer generated at the wheel–rail interface influences the lower bound of acceptable particle size range. Objective: The aim of the study is to evaluate how gait kinematics and muscle activity during robot-assisted gait training are affected by different combinations of parameter settings and a number of instruction types, ranging from no instructions to goal-specific instructions. Design: Robots for gait therapy provide a haptic guidance, but too much guidance can limit the active participation. Therapists can stimulate this active participation either with instructions or by adapting device parameters. How these two factors interact is still unknown. In the present study, we test the interaction of three different parameter settings and four instruction types in a cross-sectional study with 20 children and adolescents without impairment. Gait kinematics and surface electromyography were measured to evaluate the immediate effects. Results: We found that only goal-specific instructions in combination with a low guidance led to a moderate but significant change in gait kinematics. The muscle activity was altered by all instructions, but the biggest effect was found for goal-specific instructions with a 2.5 times higher surface electromyography amplitude compared to no instruction. Conclusions: Goal-specific instructions are a key element of robot assisted gait therapy interventions and device parameter adjustments may be used to modulate their effects. Objective: This study investigated the effect of neuromuscular electrical stimulation on the frontal ankle motor control in individuals with chronic ankle instability during drop landing. Design: This was a randomized, controlled, double-blind trial. Thirtysix individuals with chronic ankle instability were randomly assigned to each group. Participants received 6-wk neuromuscular electrical stimulation intervention and sham stimulation in the neuromuscular electrical stimulation and control groups, respectively. Data were collected at week0 and week6. A mixed-effects model and analysis of covariance were employed to investigate the between-group differences in continuous and discrete outcome variables at week6, with the outcome variables at week0 as covariates. Results: Compared to control group, neuromuscular electrical stimulation group exhibited a 2.66° (2.45, 2.86) reduction in frontal ankle inversion angle, a 47.41°/sec (−16.05, −78.77) decrease in peak ankle inversion angular velocity, and a 0.43 Nm/kg (0.18, 0.68) increase in peak ankle eversion moment during drop landing at week6. Conclusions: Applying 6-wk neuromuscular electrical stimulation to the fibularis longus resulted in decreased ankle inversion angle and ankle inversion angular velocity and increased peak ankle eversion moment during drop landing. Consequently, neuromuscular electrical stimulation could be considered an effective modality for individuals with chronic ankle instability to enhance the frontal ankle movement patterns and overall ankle motor control. Objective: This study aimed to assess the impact of combining transcranial direct current stimulation with end-effector robot-assisted treatment on upper limb function, spasticity, and hand dexterity in chronic stroke patients. Design: This was a prospective, double-blind randomized trial with 20 equally allocated stroke patients. The experimental group received dual transcranial direct current stimulation (anode over affected M1, cathode over contralateral M1) alongside robot-assisted treatment, while the control group received sham transcranial direct current stimulation with the same electrode placement + robot-assisted treatment. Each patient underwent 20 combined transcranial direct current stimulation and robot-assisted treatment sessions. The primary outcome measure was the Fugl-Meyer Upper Limb motor score, with secondary outcomes including AMADEO kinematic measures, Action Research Arm Test, and Functional Independence Measure. Assessments were conducted at baseline, after rehabilitation, and 3 mos later. Results: Combining bilateral transcranial direct current stimulation with robot-assisted treatment did not yield additional improvements in Fugl Meyer Upper Limb motor score, Functional Independence Measure, or Action Research Arm Test scores among stroke patients. However, the real transcranial direct current stimulation group showed enhanced finger flexion in the affected hand based on AMADEO kinematic measures. Conclusions: The addition of transcranial direct current stimulation to robot-assisted treatment did not result in significant overall functional improvements in chronic stroke patients. Satellite galaxies can be used to indicate the dynamic mass of galaxy groups and clusters. In this study, we apply the axisymmetric Jeans Anisotropic Multi-Gaussian Expansion (JAM) modeling to satellite galaxies in 28 galaxy clusters selected from the TNG300-1 simulation with halo masses of log 10 M 200 / M ⊙ > 14.3 . If using true bound satellites as tracers, the best constrained total mass within the half-mass radius of satellites, M (< r half), and the virial mass, M 200, have average biases of −0.01 and 0.03 dex, with average scatters of 0.11 dex and 0.15 dex. If selecting companions in the redshift space with a line-of-sight depth of 2000 km s−1, the biases are −0.06 and 0.01 dex, while the scatters are 0.12 and 0.18 dex for M (< r half) and M 200. By comparing the best-fitting and actual density profiles, we find that ∼29% of the best-fitting density profiles show very good agreement with the truth, ∼32% display over/underestimates at most of the radial range with biased M (< r half), and 39% show under/overestimates in central regions and over/underestimates in the outskirts, with good constraints on M (< r half); yet most of the best constraints are still consistent with the true profiles within 1 σ statistical uncertainties for the three circumstances. Using a mock DESI Bright Galaxy Survey catalog with the effect of fiber incompleteness, we find DESI fiber assignments and the choice of flux limits barely modify the velocity dispersion profiles and are thus unlikely to affect the dynamical modeling outcomes. Our results show that with current and future deep spectroscopic surveys, JAM can be a powerful tool to constrain the underlying density profiles of individual massive galaxy clusters. Grinding stones are a worldwide technology, instrumental in processing food as far back as the African Middle Stone Age. Research interest in grinding stones, and the usewear on their surfaces, has grown in the last few decades. Models of grinding stone manufacture, use, and discard provide a reference for cross-cultural comparisons of practices and guide methodologies in planning usewear analysis based on kinetics. In Ethiopia, traditional knowledge of grinding stones is still accessible, and grinding stones remain in use. The models developed through interviews with, and observations of, local practitioners show processes and behaviors but also decisions made at various stages. Total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is an end-stage treatment for knee osteoarthritis that relieves pain and loss of mobility, but patient satisfaction and revision rates require improvement. One cause for TKA revision is joint instability, which may be due to improper ligament balancing. A better understanding of the relationship between prosthesis design, alignment, and ligament engagement is necessary to improve component designs and surgical techniques to achieve better outcomes. We investigated the biomechanical effects of ligament model complexity and ligament wrapping during laxity tests using a virtual joint motion simulator. Early warning systems (EWSs) for landslides are becoming a pivotal tool to safeguard assets and stakeholders. With this mission, an EWS should be capable of reliably forecasting the failure time when the ground accelerates. There are analytical methods developed to this end that use time-series kinematics: inverse velocity (INV), minimum inverse velocity (MINV), slope gradient (SLO), and velocity over acceleration (VOA). Although an abundant number of studies applied these methods, they have been majorly examined in a back-analysis context where all the measurements are incorporated into the forecasting process. A successful operation of EWSs in raising meaningful alarms calls for an examination in which the forecasting method is evaluated synchronously. This study evaluates the ability of the four mentioned methods to provide reliable forecasts in real time using a comprehensive database including 75 historical failures. For the first time, the methods are evaluated using a quantitative metric called reliability fitness index (RFI) that measures the portion of forecasts meeting an accuracy threshold. For accuracy thresholds of 50, 75 and 90%, INV showed the highest RFI values of 16, 7, and 4% followed by SLO values of 12, 5, and 2%, respectively. Opposing reliability values for SLO and INV suggest EWSs should take advantage of hybrid models that consider both methods. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Several studies have demonstrated the existence of a link between action observation (AO) and language. However, the optimizing parameters for this link have not been explored until now. To answer this question, the present study proposed two experiments for assessing the role of motor repertory and attentional focus. Sixty participants performed a priming task in which they had to decide if a verb was or was not an action verb after they saw a point-light display (PLD) representing an action. Only one difference distinguished the experiments. In experiment one, the PLD was either in accordance or not with the gender kinematics of the observer, whereas in the second experiment, the PLD either focused on or was unfocused on the main limbs implied in the action. The results show that motor repertory affects the link between action observation and action verb processing, whereas attentional focus does not. Implications of these results are highlighted in the discussion, notably to better understand the mechanisms that explain the link between action observation and action verb processing. Background: Motor competence (MC) is a key component reflecting one's ability to execute motor tasks and is an important predictor of physical fitness. For adolescents, understanding the factors affecting MC is pertinent to their development of more sophisticated sporting skills. Previous studies considered the influence of poor proprioceptive ability on MC, however, the relationship between lower limb joint position sense, kinematic control, and MC is not well understood. Therefore, the aim of this study was to determine the relation between joint position sense and kinematic control with MC in adolescents during a lower limb movement reproduction task. Methods: This study was a cross-sectional design. Young people (n = 427, 196 girls and 231 boys) aged 13 to 14 years were recruited. A movement reproduction task was used to assess joint position sense and kinematic control, while the Movement Assessment Battery for Children (mABC-2) was used to assess MC. In this study, participants were categorized into the Typically Developed (TD, n = 231) and Probable Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD, n = 80) groups for further analysis of joint position sense, kinematic control, and MC between groups. Results: Kinematic data, specifically normalized jerk, showed a significant correlation with MC. There was no correlation between knee joint position sense and MC, and no group differences between DCD and TD were found. Conclusions: Joint position sense should not be used as a measure to distinguish TD and DCD. Rather than joint position sense, control of kinematic movement has a greater influence on the coordination of the lower limbs in adolescents. Movement control training should be implemented in the clinical setting to target kinematic control, rather than focus on joint position sense practice, to improve motor competency. Purpose: Most shoulder pathologies are associated with altered scapular kinematics which is mentioned as scapular dyskinesis. Scapular mobility, especially in upward rotation, measurement is essential for diagnosis and treatment. Easy-to-use, clinically applicable 2-dimensional (2-D) measurements would show excellent intra-tester reliability. To quantify intra-tester reliability for measuring scapular upward rotation in individuals with scapular dyskinesias, the landmark palpation with a video annotation tool was used. Methods: Ten participants with scapular dyskinesis were recruited. Scapular upward rotation was measured at rest, 30∘, 60∘, 90∘, and 120∘ of humeral elevation in the coronal plane both raising and lowering phases. Two trials were conducted for each arm position randomly, and an assessor took the pictures throughout. The video annotation tool (2-D Kinovia program) was used for measuring scapular upward rotation angles between days. The intra-tester reliability of scapular upward rotation was calculated. Results: This measurement technique demonstrated excellent intra-tester reliability (ICC3,1 = 0.98), range 0.96–0.99, and standard error of measurement was less than 1∘. Purpose Methods Results Conclusion Level of Evidence Similar to the anterior cruciate ligament, the femoral footprint of the posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) is composed of different fibre areas, possibly having distinct biomechanical functions. The aim of this study was to determine the role of different fibre areas of the femoral footprint of the PCL in restraining posterior tibial translation (PTT).A sequential cutting study was performed on eight fresh‐frozen human knee specimens, utilizing a six‐degrees‐of‐freedom robotic test setup. The femoral attachment of the PCL was divided into 15 areas, which were sequentially cut from the bone in a randomized sequence. After determining the native knee kinematics, a displacement‐controlled protocol was performed replaying the native motion, while constantly measuring the force. The reduction of the restraining force presented the percentage contribution of each cut, according to the principle of superposition.The PCL was found to contribute 29 ± 16% in 0°, 51 ± 24% in 30°, 60 ± 22% in 60° and 55 ± 18% in 90°, to restricting a PTT. The fibre areas contributing the most were located at the proximal border of the PCL footprint, away from the cartilage, and directly adjacent to the medial intercondylar ridge (p < 0.05). Of these, one fibre area showed the highest contribution at all flexion angles. This area was located at the posterior half of the medial intercondylar ridge. No clear assignment of the areas to either the anterolateral or posteromedial bundle was possible.An area towards the proximal and posterior part of the femoral PCL footprint was found to significantly restrain a posterior tibial force. Based on the data of this testing setup, a PCL graft positioned at the identified area may best mimic the part of the native PCL, which bears the most load in resisting a PTT force.No evidence level (laboratory study). BACKGROUND: Kinesio taping has been widely used as a means of sports protection, but its role as a means to correct abnormal biomechanical changes of the lower limbs during side-step cutting remains unclear. OBJECTIVE: To analyze and compare the changes in lower limb kinematics and dynamics when the subjects complete the side-step cutting of the knee joint under the conditions of kinesio taping, placebo taping and blank control. METHODS: Thirty-nine male college students majoring in basketball were recruited as subjects. Each subject was tested with kinesio taping, placebo taping or no taping. The mechanical correction method was used to patch the dominant knee joint of each subject. The run-up speed of 4.5-5.5 m/s was selected to complete the 45° side-step cutting motion, and the kinematics and kinetics data were collected synchronously by the three-dimensional dynamic capture system and the force measuring platform. The kinematics and kinetics parameters at the moment of initial touchdown and peak ground reaction force were selected for data analysis. SPSS 27.0 software was used for statistical analysis of the test data. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION: Kinematic indexes: compared with no taping and placebo taping, the hip abduction and knee valgus angles at the initial touchdown moment were significantly decreased when kinesio taping was used (P < 0.05); at the moment of peak lateral ground reaction force, the angles of hip abduction, knee valgus and ankle plantar flexion decreased significantly (P < 0.05), and the knee flexion angle was significantly increased (P < 0.05). Kinetic indexes: Compared with no taping, both kinesio taping and placebo taping significantly reduced hip abduction and external rotation torque, knee valgus and external rotation torque at the moment of initial touchdown (P < 0.05), and significantly reduced peak vertical ground reaction force and peak horizontal backward ground reaction force (P < 0.05); in addition, kinesio taping significantly reduced peak lateral ground reaction force compared with no taping and placebo taping (P < 0.05). These results indicate that kinesio taping of the knee joint may improve some kinematic and kinetic indexes associated with lower limb injury risk factors during the completion of the side-step cutting in basketball specialized college students to some extent, and may have a positive effect on the prevention of injury during the side-step cutting. In addition, the trends in the effects of placebo taping and kinesio taping on the knee joint are more consistent in terms of changes in some indexes, suggesting that there may be a placebo effect on the mechanism of action of kinesio taping. Boat acceleration profiles can provide valuable information for coaches and practitioners to make meaningful technical interventions and monitor the determinants of success in rowing. Previous studies have used simple feature detection methods to identify key phases within individual strokes, such as drive onset, drive time, drive offset and stroke time. However, based on skill level, technique or boat class, the hull acceleration profile can differ, making robust feature detection more challenging. The current study's purpose is to employ the undecimated wavelet transform (UWT) technique to detect individual features in the stroke acceleration profile from a single rowing hull-mounted accelerometer. In this investigation, the temporal and kinematic values obtained using the AdMosTM sensor in conjunction with the UWT processing approach were strongly correlated with the comparative measures of the Peach™ instrumented oarlock system. The measures for stroke time displayed very strong agreeability between the systems for all boat classes, with ICC values of 0.993, 0.963 and 0.954 for the W8+, W4− and W1x boats, respectively. Similarly, the drive time was also very consistent, with strong to very strong agreeability, producing ICC values of 0.937, 0.901 and 0.881 for the W8+, W4− and W1x boat classes. Further, a Bland–Altman analysis displayed little to no bias between the AdMosTM-derived and Peach™ measures, indicating that there were no systematic discrepancies between signals. This single-sensor solution could form the basis for a simple, cost-effective and accessible alternative to multi-sensor instrumented systems for the determination of sub-stroke kinematic phases. The effects of occlusal splints on sport performance have already been studied, although their biomechanical impacts are often overlooked. We investigated the kinematical changes during running until exhaustion at severe intensity while wearing a mandibular advancement occlusal splint. Twelve trained runners completed (i) an incremental protocol on a track to determine their velocity corresponding to maximal oxygen uptake and (ii) two trials of square wave transition exercises at their velocity corresponding to maximal oxygen until exhaustion, wearing two occlusal splints (without and with mandibular advancement). Running kinematics were compared within laps performed during the square wave transition exercises and between splint conditions. The mandibular advancement occlusal splint increased the running distance covered (~1663 ± 402 vs. 1540 ± 397 m, p = 0.03), along with a noticeable lap effect in decreasing stride frequency (p = 0.04) and increasing stride length (p = 0.03) and duty factor (p < 0.001). No spatiotemporal differences were observed between splints, except for improved balance foot contact times in the mandibular advancement condition. An increased knee flexion angle at initial contact (p = 0.017) was noted along laps in the non-advancement condition, despite the fact that no differences between splints were found. Running patterns mainly shifted within laps rather than between conditions, indicating that a mandibular advancement occlusal splint had a trivial kinematical effect. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Quantitative three-dimensional gait analysis has been used to evaluate the loading at the knee (i.e. external knee adduction moment, EKAM) during level ground walking in individuals with knee osteoarthritis (OA). The magnitude of EKAM can be influenced by some factors, such as knee marker position and foot placement angles in static calibration trials, which may lead to inaccurate functional assessments and intervention planning. This study aimed to clarify the effects of knee position during static calibration trials on the evaluation of knee loading during gait in individuals with medial knee OA. Seventeen individuals with medial knee OA completed three different static standing trials; (1) knee flexed at 0 degrees, (2) knee flexed at 15 degrees, and (3) knee flexed at 30 degrees before walking at their self-selected speed. A sixteen-camera three-dimensional VICON gait analysis system with four AMTI force platforms was used to collect the EKAM, knee adduction angular impulse (KAAI), knee joint center (KJC), and other knee kinematic and kinetic variables during gait. A repeated measures ANOVA was used to investigate the differences between conditions. The 1st peak of EKAM, the 1st peak EKAM arm, KAAI, and knee extension moment were significantly increased at the 15-degree and 30-degree conditions in comparison with the 0-degree condition (P < 0.05). Additionally, the knee flexion moment and knee external rotation moment were significantly reduced at the 15-degree and 30-degree conditions in comparison with the 0-degree condition (P < 0.05). All biomechanical variables were influenced by the localization of the KJC during static calibration trials. The changes in knee position during static trials significantly affected the 1st peak EKAM, KAAI, and other knee kinematics and kinetics variables during gait. Therefore, future studies should consider keeping the participants’ knees in a consistent position during static trials between visits, as the variations in knee position could mask or exaggerate the differences between groups and interventions. Introduction: Stiffness (k) describes a material’s resistance to deformation and is useful for understanding neuromuscular function, performance, and injury risk. The aim of this study is to compare the lower limb stiffness method (kLLS), which uses only force plate data, with methods combining force plate and motion capture data to calculate stiffness during the eccentric phase of a countermovement. Material and Methods: Twelve resistance-trained males: age 24.9 (4.4) years, height 1.81 (0.05) m, weight 88.2 (14) kg) performed three maximal effort countermovement jumps (CMJ). Data were collected synchronously using three-dimensional (3D) kinematic and kinetic data (dual force plate setup). Lower limb stiffness (z), joint stiffness (x, y, and z), and leg stiffness (linear, sagittal plane, and 3D) were calculated for the eccentric phase of all CMs. Results: kLLS showed high concurrent validity with strong correlations to kinetic-kinematic methods (r = 0.90-0.97, p < 0.05). A linear mixed model revealed no significant differences in k-values between kLLS and leg stiffness, indicating high concurrent validity. Discussion: kLLS offers valid and valuable information affecting performance, injury risk, and return-to-sport decisions. This study aimed to investigate the variation of individual and group competitive learning strategies on technique, kinematic variables in the front crawl stroke swimming, and intelligent physical-motor among swimming level 2 course students. The sample of the study consisted of 16 students, it was selected based on Intentional style of swimming level 2 course students involved in the second semester (2018/2019) who divided into two similar groups; A: control group (8) students learning with the traditional style, B: experimental group (8) students learning with competitive strategy. The following variables have been measured: skill level, frequency and stroke length, and speed of swimming 50m at front crawl stroke as well as intelligent physical-motor. The results of the study showed that the traditional learning method has a positive impact on improving skillfulness and speed of swimming 50 m at front crawl stroke performance. On the other hand, a competitive learning strategy has a significant effect in improving the performance of swimming 50m at front crawl stroke between students. The researcher recommends using a competitive learning strategy better when implementing swimming education programs to enhance technique skills and mechanical performance in front crawl stroke swimming and evaluate the level of intelligent physical-motor to know the right and viable strategy that would be used in swimming learning and use the results of kinetic analysis when evaluating students swimming to give feedback to detect weaknesses in performance to modify them. The circumgalactic medium (CGM) hosts many physical processes with different kinematic signatures that affect galaxy evolution. We address the CGM–galaxy kinematic connection by quantifying the fraction of H  i that is aligned with galaxy rotation with the equivalent width co-rotation fraction, |$f_{\rm EWcorot}$|⁠. Using 70 quasar sightlines having Hubble Space Telescope /Cosmic Origins Spectrograph H  i absorption (⁠|${12\lt \log (N(\rm{{\rm H}\,{\small I}})/{\rm cm}^{-2})\lt 20}$|⁠) within |$5R_{\rm vir}$| of |$z\lt 0.6$| galaxies we find that |$f_{\rm EWcorot}$| increases with increasing H  i column density. |$f_{\rm EWcorot}$| is flat at |$\sim 0.6$| within |$R_{\rm vir}$| and decreases beyond |$R_{\rm vir}$| to |$f_{\rm EWcorot}$| |$\sim 0.35$|⁠. |$f_{\rm EWcorot}$| also has a flat distribution with azimuthal and inclination angles within |$R_{\rm vir}$|⁠ , but decreases by a factor of two outside of |$R_{\rm vir}$| for minor axis gas and by a factor of 2 for edge-on galaxies. Inside |$R_{\rm vir}$|⁠ , co-rotation dominated H i is located within |$\sim 20$| deg of the major and minor axes. We surprisingly find equal amounts of H  i absorption consistent with co-rotation along both major and minor axes within |$R_{\rm vir}$|⁠. However, this co-rotation disappears along the minor axis beyond |$R_{\rm vir}$|⁠ , suggesting that if this gas is from outflows, then it is bound to galaxies. |$f_{\rm EWcorot}$| is constant over two decades of halo mass, with no decrease for log(M |$_{\rm h}/{\rm M}_{\odot })\gt 12$| as expected from simulations. This study compared lower extremity, trunk, and upper extremity kinematics between tee and front toss hitting in youth baseball athletes. Twenty youth baseball athletes (14.3±2.9 yrs) performed three maximal effort swings off front toss and tee. Kinematic data were collected during the preparatory and acceleration phases. Lower extremity, trunk, and upper extremity kinematics were compared between tee and front toss hitting using 1-dimensional statistical parametric mapping (SPM). There was a significant difference in trunk kinematics between tee and front toss during the preparatory phase (p=.001); the trunk rotated more toward the back side when hitting off a tee compared to front toss (p<0.001). There was also a significant difference in trunk kinematics between tee and front toss for 67% of the acceleration phase; the trunk rotated more towards the back side from 0 to 67% when hitting off the tee (p<0.001). Significant differences were found in trunk kinematics between tee and front toss hitting in youth baseball players, where the trunk is less rotated toward the pitcher in the tee than in the front toss. Coaches utilize various training modalities to enhance hitting performance; however, differences in trunk kinematics should be considered between modalities when developing fundamental hitting techiques in youth baseball athletes. AbstractMany researchers are interested in how the kinematics of reach-to-grasp movements in virtual reality (VR), which involve the vergence–accommodation conflict, differ from real space. The present study, conducted in VR, verified the effect of a discrepancy between visual and haptic target size and found that terminal haptic feedback is weighted more heavily than visual information, as is the case in real space. Furthermore, we investigated how the presence or absence of terminal haptic feedback modulates performance in VR by comparing prehension with or without terminal haptic feedback in VR, closed-loop natural grasping in real space, and pantomimed prehension with the eyes closed. Our results suggested that the contribution of a visual image to grip aperture adjustment is quite marginal in situations where terminal haptic feedback is unavailable, and that the performance in VR without haptic feedback is highly correlated with performances driven by fully internal representations (i.e., pantomimed movements). The purpose of this quasiexperimental study was to test the effects of wearing the NewGait rehabilitative device on walking abilities in individuals with foot drop. The study involved 16 participants with foot drops caused by stroke (11 participants), multiple sclerosis (one participant), and peripheral neuropathies (four individuals). During a single testing session, participants walked 12 m at their self‐selected speed in four experimental conditions: walking without any orthotic device; walking while wearing a regular plastic posterior leaf ankle foot orthosis (AFO); walking with the NewGait device assisting ankle dorsiflexion only; and walking with the NewGait device assisting the hip, knee, and ankle joint motions. Body motions during walking were recorded using a 3D system for motion analysis and analyzed with a set of spatiotemporal and kinematic parameters and a gait decomposition index. The gait decomposition index indicated sagittal interjoint coordination in the three joint pairs (hip–knee, knee–ankle, and hip–ankle) of the paretic (foot drop) leg during walking and was validated in a previous study. Overall, wearing all three orthotic devices improved the gait velocity, ankle dorsiflexion, and foot clearance compared to gait trials in which no assistive devices were used. However, wearing the AFO significantly restricted the plantarflexion range of motion and decreased interjoint coordination as measured by joint decomposition. In contrast, the NewGait device altered the ankle plantarflexion motions but also increased coordinated movement (reduced the decomposition) in most lower‐extremity joint pairs and conditions. Studies reported the existence of instability catch (IC) during trunk flexion in patients with chronic low back pain (CLBP). However, different movement speeds can cause different neuromuscular demands resulting in altered kinematic patterns. In addition, kinematic characterization corresponding to clinical observation of IC is still limited. Therefore, this study aimed to determine (1) the association between movement speed and kinematic parameters representing IC during trunk flexion and (2) the differences in kinematic parameters between individuals with and without CLBP. Fifteen no low back pain (NoLBP) and 15 CLBP individuals were recruited. Inertial measurement units (IMU) were attached to T3, L1, and S2 spinous processes. Participants performed active trunk flexion while IMU data were simultaneously collected. Total trunk, lumbar, and pelvic mean angular velocity (T_MV, L_MV, and P_MV), as well as number of zero-crossings, peak-to-peak, and area of sudden deceleration and acceleration (Num, P2P, and Area), were derived. Pearson's correlation tests were used to determine the association between T_MV and L_MV, P_MV, Num, P2P, and Area. An ANCOVA was performed to determine the difference in kinematic parameters between groups using movement speed as a covariate. Significant associations (P < 0.05) were found between movement speed and other kinematic parameters, except for Area. Results showed that L_MV significantly differed from the P_MV (P = 0.002) in the CLBP group, while a significant between-group difference (P = 0.037) was found in the P_MV. Additionally, significant between-group differences (P < 0.05) in P2P and Area were observed. The associations between movement speed and kinematic parameters suggest that movement speed changes can alter kinematic patterns. Therefore, clinicians may challenge lumbopelvic neuromuscular control by modifying movement speed to elicit greater change in kinematic patterns. In addition, the NoLBP group used shared lumbar and pelvic contributions, while the CLBP group used less pelvic contribution. Finally, P2P and Area appeared to offer the greatest sensitivity to differentiate between the groups. Overall, these findings may enhance the understanding of the mechanism underlying IC in CLBP. Purpose: Speech motor skill is refined over the course of practice, which is commonly reflected by increased accuracy and consistency. This research examined the relationship between auditory-perceptual ratings of word accuracy and measures of speech motor timing and variability at pre- and posttreatment in children with childhood apraxia of speech (CAS). Furthermore, the degree to which individual patterns of baseline probe word accuracy, receptive language, and cognition predicted response to treatment was explored. Method: Probe data were collected from seven children with CAS (aged 2;5-5;0 [years;months]) who received 6 weeks of Dynamic Temporal and Tactile Cueing (DTTC) treatment. Using a multidimensional approach to measuring speech performance, auditory-perceptual (whole-word accuracy), acoustic (whole-word duration), and kinematic (jaw movement variability) analyses were conducted on probe words produced pre- and posttreatment. Standardized tests of receptive language and cognition were administered pretreatment. Results: There was a negative relationship between auditory-perceptual measures of word accuracy and movement variability. Higher word accuracy was associated with lower jaw movement variability following intervention. There was a strong relationship between word accuracy and word duration at baseline, which became less robust posttreatment. Furthermore, baseline word accuracy was the only child-specific factor to predict response to DTTC treatment. Conclusions: Following a period of motor-based intervention, children with CAS appeared to refine speech motor control in conjunction with improvements in word accuracy. Those who demonstrated the poorest performance at treatment onset displayed the greatest degree of gains. Background: To overcome the application limitations of functional electrical stimulation (FES), such as fatigue or nonlinear muscle response, the combination of neuroprosthetic systems with robotic devices has been evaluated, resulting in hybrid systems that have promising potential. However, current technology shows a lack of flexibility to adapt to the needs of any application, context or individual. The main objective of this study is the development of a new modular neuroprosthetic system suitable for hybrid FES-robot applications to meet these needs. Methods: In this study, we conducted an analysis of the requirements for developing hybrid FES-robot systems and reviewed existing literature on similar systems. Building upon these insights, we developed a novel modular neuroprosthetic system tailored for hybrid applications. The system was specifically adapted for gait assistance, and a technological personalization process based on clinical criteria was devised. This process was used to generate different system configurations adjusted to four individuals with spinal cord injury or stroke. The effect of each system configuration on gait kinematic metrics was analyzed by using repeated measures ANOVA or Friedman’s test. Results: A modular NP system has been developed that is distinguished by its flexibility, scalability and personalization capabilities. With excellent connection characteristics, it can be effectively integrated with robotic devices. Its 3D design facilitates fitting both as a stand-alone system and in combination with other robotic devices. In addition, it meets rigorous requirements for safe use by incorporating appropriate safety protocols, and features appropriate battery autonomy, weight and dimensions. Different technological configurations adapted to the needs of each patient were obtained, which demonstrated an impact on the kinematic gait pattern comparable to that of other devices reported in the literature. Conclusions: The system met the identified technical requirements, showcasing advancements compared to systems reported in the literature. In addition, it demonstrated its versatility and capacity to be combined with robotic devices forming hybrids, adapting well to the gait application. Background: Motor difficulties are common in many, but not all, autistic individuals. These difficulties can co-occur with other problems, such as delays in language, intellectual, and adaptive functioning. Biological mechanisms underpinning such difficulties are less well understood. Poor motor skills tend to be more common in individuals carrying highly penetrant rare genetic mutations. Such mechanisms may have downstream consequences of altering neurophysiological excitation-inhibition balance and lead to enhanced behavioral motor noise. Methods: This study combined publicly available and in-house datasets of autistic (n = 156), typically-developing (TD, n = 149), and developmental coordination disorder (DCD, n = 23) children (age 3–16 years). Autism motor subtypes were identified based on patterns of motor abilities measured from the Movement Assessment Battery for Children 2nd edition. Stability-based relative clustering validation was used to identify autism motor subtypes and evaluate generalization accuracy in held-out data. Autism motor subtypes were tested for differences in motor noise, operationalized as the degree of dissimilarity between repeated motor kinematic trajectories recorded during a simple reach-to-drop task. Results: Relatively 'high' (n = 87) versus 'low' (n = 69) autism motor subtypes could be detected and which generalize with 89% accuracy in held-out data. The relatively 'low' subtype was lower in general intellectual ability and older at age of independent walking, but did not differ in age at first words or autistic traits or symptomatology. Motor noise was considerably higher in the 'low' subtype compared to 'high' (Cohen's d = 0.77) or TD children (Cohen's d = 0.85), but similar between autism 'high' and TD children (Cohen's d = 0.08). Enhanced motor noise in the 'low' subtype was also most pronounced during the feedforward phase of reaching actions. Limitations: The sample size of this work is limited. Future work in larger samples along with independent replication is important. Motor noise was measured only on one specific motor task. Thus, a more comprehensive assessment of motor noise on many other motor tasks is needed. Conclusions: Autism can be split into at least two discrete motor subtypes that are characterized by differing levels of motor noise. Objective: To investigate in vivo 6-degree-of-freedom (DOF) vertebral motion in patients with isthmic spondylolisthesis (IS) during various functional weight-bearing activities. Methods: Fifteen asymptomatic volunteers (mean age 54.8 years) and fourteen patients with IS at L4-5 (mean age 53.4 years) were recruited. The positions of the vertebrae (L4-L5) in the supine, standing, flexion–extension, left–right twisting and left–right bending positions were determined using previously described CT-based models and dual fluoroscopic imaging techniques. Local coordinate systems were established at the center of the anterior vertebra of L4 isthmic spondylolisthesis (AIS), the posterior lamina of L4 isthmic spondylolisthesis (PIS) and the center of the L5 vertebra to obtain the 6DOF range of motion (ROM) at L4-L5 and the range of motion (ROM) between the AIS and the PIS. Results: The translation along the anteroposterior axis at L4-L5 during flexion–extension, left–right bending and left–right twisting was significantly greater than that of the healthy participants. However, the translation along the mediolateral axis at L4-L5 presented paradoxical motion under different positions: the ROM increased in the supine-standing and flexion–extension positions but decreased in the left–right bending and left–right twisting positions. The separation along the anteroposterior axis during flexion was significantly greater than that during standing, on average, reaching more than 1 mm. The separation along the mediolateral axis during standing, flexion and extension was significantly greater than that in the supine position. Conclusions: This study revealed the occurrence of displacement between the AIS and PIS, primarily in the form of separation during flexion. Stiff knee gait (SKG) occurrence after a stroke is associated with various abnormal muscle activities; however, the interactions among these muscles are unclear. This study aimed to elucidate the muscle synergy characteristics during walking in patients with SKG after a stroke. This cross-sectional study included 20 patients with poststroke SKG (SKG group), 16 patients without poststroke SKG (non-SKG group), and 15 healthy adults (control group). Participants walked a 10-m distance at a comfortable speed, and electromyographic data were recorded from six lower-limb muscles. Non-negative matrix factorization was employed to derive time-varying activity (C), muscle weights (W), and the percentage of total variance accounted for (tVAF) for muscle synergies. The SKG group showed a higher tVAF than the control group. The initial stance module (including knee extensors) showed increased activity during the swing phase. The initial swing module (including hip flexors and ankle dorsiflexors) exhibited a higher activity during the single-support phase but a lower activity during the swing phase. The synergy structure in patients with SKG after stroke was simplified, with specific abnormalities in synergy activities. Background: Individual maximum joint and segment angular velocities have shown positive associations with throwing arm kinetics and ball velocity in baseball pitchers. Purpose: To observe how cumulative maximum joint and segment angular velocities, irrespective of sequence, affect ball velocity and throwing arm kinetics in high school pitchers. Study Design: Descriptive laboratory study. Methods: High school (n = 55) pitchers threw 8 to 12 fastball pitches while being evaluated with 3-dimensional motion capture (480 Hz). Maximum joint and segment angular velocities (lead knee extension, pelvis rotation, trunk rotation, shoulder internal rotation, and forearm pronation) were calculated for each pitcher. Pitchers were classified as overall fast, overall slow, or high velocity for each joint or segment velocity subcategory, or as population, with any pitcher eligible to be included in multiple subcategories. Kinematic and kinetic parameters were compared among the various subgroups using t tests with post hoc regressions and multivariable regression models created to predict throwing arm kinetics and ball velocity, respectively. Results: The lead knee extension and pelvis rotation velocity subgroups achieved significantly higher normalized elbow varus torque (P =.016) and elbow flexion torque (P =.018) compared with population, with equivalent ball velocity (P =.118). For every 1-SD increase in maximum pelvis rotation velocity (87 deg/s), the normalized elbow distractive force increased by 4.7% body weight (BW) (B = 0.054; β = 0.290; P =.013). The overall fast group was older (mean ± standard deviation, 16.9 ± 1.4 vs 15.4 ± 0.9 years; P =.007), had 8.9-mph faster ball velocity (32.7 ± 3.1 vs 28.7 ± 2.3 m/s; P =.002), and had significantly higher shoulder internal rotation torque (63.1 ± 17.4 vs 43.6 ± 12.0 Nm; P =.005), elbow varus torque (61.8 ± 16.4 vs 41.6 ± 11.4 Nm; P =.002), and elbow flexion torque (46.4 ± 12.0 vs 29.5 ± 6.8 Nm; P <.001) compared with the overall slow group. A multiregression model for ball velocity based on maximum joint and segment angular velocities and anthropometrics predicted 53.0% of variance. Conclusion: High school pitchers with higher maximum joint and segment velocities, irrespective of sequence, demonstrated older age and faster ball velocity at the cost of increased throwing shoulder and elbow kinetics. Clinical Relevance: Pitchers and coaching staff should consider this trade-off between faster ball velocity and increasing throwing arm kinetics, an established risk factor for elbow injury. The crank-type vibration exciters represent innovative and promising actuators for a variety of vibratory technological equipment. Extensive research has demonstrated their potential for generating specific trajectories of the working components of various technological machines. This study builds upon previous investigations of the authors, focusing on the kinematics and dynamics of crank-type vibration exciters, with a specific emphasis on analyzing the forces, moments, and torques acting on the elements of the twin crank-type actuating mechanism. The research methodology involves the development of a simplified dynamic diagram of the mechanism and derivation of the analytical expressions to describe its force parameters. Mathematical modeling and computer simulation are then conducted to analyze the forces, moments, and torques experienced by the mechanism during its motion under different operational conditions and design parameters. The results obtained provide time-dependent profiles of these parameters across various conditions and design configurations of the twin crank-type mechanism. A key scientific contribution of this paper consists in the development of the theoretical basis for creating novel techniques of dynamic and strength analysis and optimization of design and operational parameters of enhanced vibration exciters equipped with twin crank-type mechanisms. This study evaluates the utility of OpenCap (v0.3), a smartphone-based motion capture system, for performing gait analysis in patients with neurological disorders. We compared kinematic and kinetic gait parameters between 10 healthy controls and 10 patients with neurological conditions, including stroke, Parkinson's disease, and cerebral palsy. OpenCap captured 3D movement dynamics using two smartphones, with data processed through musculoskeletal modeling. The key findings indicate that the patient group exhibited significantly slower gait speeds (0.67 m/s vs. 1.10 m/s, p = 0.002), shorter stride lengths (0.81 m vs. 1.29 m, p = 0.001), and greater step length asymmetry (107.43% vs. 91.23%, p = 0.023) compared to the controls. Joint kinematic analysis revealed increased variability in pelvic tilt, hip flexion, knee extension, and ankle dorsiflexion throughout the gait cycle in patients, indicating impaired motor control and compensatory strategies. These results indicate that OpenCap can effectively identify significant gait differences, which may serve as valuable biomarkers for neurological disorders, thereby enhancing its utility in clinical settings where traditional motion capture systems are impractical. This study aimed to discuss the differences in technical characteristics between the lunge-style and squat-style jerk techniques and to reveal the adaptability of these techniques for individual weightlifters. A total of 52 attempts by 32 male weightlifters were selected, and the video data were digitized manually using the SIMI Motion 7.50 three-dimensional analysis system. The technical characteristics of the lunge split and squat jerk were fundamentally consistent during the pre-squat, force exertion, and inertia ascent phases. The primary differences between the lunge split and squat jerk techniques were observed during the squatting and support phases, including the vertical descent velocity of the barbell at the end of the squat shoulder-locking phase and the stability angles in the sagittal and coronal axes. The vertical velocity of the barbell at the end of the squat shoulder-locking phase was significantly greater in the squat style (−0.41 ± 0.17 vs. −0.88 ± 0.14) compared to the lunge style (t = 6.393, p < 0.05). The stability angle on the sagittal axis at the end of the squat-supporting phase in the lunge style was significantly greater (46.99 ± 3.23 vs. 13.64 ± 0.51) than that of the squat style (t = 45.639, p < 0.05). To understand fish swimming behavior in unsteady flows, this paper introduces the Kármán gait model to numerically investigate the hydrodynamics of fish-like swimming in an asymmetric vortex environment, specifically the P + S mode (a pair of vortices are shed from one side of the cylinder and a single vortex from the other side during one oscillation period) created by an oscillating cylinder. The immersed boundary method is employed to model both the fish-like airfoil and the vibrating cylinder. Through simulations across a broad range of controlling parameters, we analyze the advancement efficiency of the airfoil in the P + S mode, the force coefficients, Fourier spectra of hydrodynamic forces, and the interactions between the airfoil and vortices. Our findings reveal that the fundamental phase Φ0 is crucial, as it directly influences the airfoil's position relative to the vortex and affects the forces exerted. Other parameters play a secondary role, primarily reinforcing the effect of the fundamental phase on airfoil–vortex interactions. Furthermore, the vortex pair boosting effect, unique to the P + S mode, enhances the airfoil's thrust and swimming efficiency. The wake environment behind the airfoil is also vital for maximizing benefits from the P + S mode. When the fundamental mode fs, indicative of the airfoil's ability to extract energy from vortices, dominates the Fourier spectra of hydrodynamic forces, it supports the airfoil's motion in the P + S mode. Road grade is important for autonomous vehicles, but it is difficult to measure directly. To address this issue, a hierarchical estimation of road grade is suggested based on the observation of tire forces. First, a 7-degree-of-freedom (DOF) dynamics model, including vehicle longitudinal, lateral, and yaw motions together with wheel rotations, is developed while considering the road grade. Subsequently, a dual-layer road grade estimation strategy is proposed based on an unscented Kalman filter (UKF). The lower-layer UKF estimates the longitudinal and lateral tire forces for road grade observation, and the upper-layer UKF is employed to estimate the road grade by considering the vehicle's lateral acceleration and yaw rate. Finally, CarSim and MATLAB joint simulations and road tests are performed under different conditions to validate the correctness and effectiveness of the proposed estimation method. The results show that the proposed tire force observation-based estimator exhibits a lower mean absolute error and root mean square error on sloping roads and combined curved and sloping roads, and presents a better overall estimation performance on road grade compared with the widely used kinematics and dynamics model-based estimators. There are different ways to deliver external focus (EF) and internal focus (IF) instruction. Understanding each modality better will help to develop more effective interventions to reduce injury risk. To investigate the difference in landing biomechanics between participants who received EF and IF instruction and control participants. A secondary aim was to evaluate participant perceptions of focus of attention. Randomized controlled trial. Laboratory. Forty-one healthy women (EF: n = 14, 23.0 ± 2.9 years, 1.69 ± 0.07 m, 64.0 ± 6.8 kg; IF: n = 15, 22.9 ± 3.2 years, 1.66 ± 0.08 m, 66.2 ± 12.4 kg; control: n = 12, 21.1 ± 2.9 years, 1.67 ± 0.11 m, 74.3 ± 15.1 kg). Participants scoring greater than or equal to 5 on the Landing Error Scoring System were allocated into the EF, IF, or control group. Knee and hip flexion and abduction were collected pre- and postintervention during 5 drop vertical jumps. For the intervention, each group was provided separate instructions. In between the intervention jumps, participants answered, "What strategy were you focusing on when completing the previous jump-landing trials?" Postintervention minus preintervention change scores were calculated, and separate 1-way analysis of variance assessments were performed to determine differences in the dependent variables. Individuals in the EF group had a greater change in hip and knee flexion angles than individuals in the control group. There was no significant difference between the EF and IF groups for any variables. There were no significant differences in frontal plane variables. In the EF group, 71.4% aligned with the instructions given; in the IF group, 80% aligned; and in the control group, 50% aligned. External focus instruction may not produce immediate changes in movement compared with IF instruction. Hip and knee flexion were greater in the EF group than in the control group but was not better than that in the IF group. Clinicians should provide instructions to patients, but the mode of instruction may not be as critical to see positive biomechanical changes. The Qaidam Basin is the largest sedimentary basin within the Tibetan Plateau, with up to ∼15-km-thick deposits accumulated in the Cenozoic. Understanding how it deformed in response to the far-field effects of India-Eurasia collision is critical to improving our knowledge of the mechanism underlying northward plateau growth. Unlike typical compressional basins, where upper-crustal deformation concentrates at their margins, the Qaidam Basin features the development of many NW- to WNW-striking folds across the entire basin. Why crustal shortening occurred in the interior of Qaidam Basin, ∼100 km away from the margins, together with the underground geometries beneath these folds, remains unknown. Herein, based on newly acquired three- and two-dimensional (3-D and 2-D) seismic reflection data, borehole logging, and scaled physical analog modeling, we investigated the geometries, kinematics, and formation mechanisms of the folds within the interior of Qaidam Basin. For the first time, we reveal three local weak layers in the Lulehe, Upper Xiaganchaigou, and Shangyoushashan Formations, respectively. They consist mainly of mudstone intercalated with evaporites and limestones, and they have different spatial distributions that are likely confined by major faults and folds. These mechanically weak layers became locally thickened or thinned in response to tectonic loading and/ or facilitated detachment slip to form many décollement folds that were observed at the surface. The shallow deformation above the weak layers is largely decoupled from underlying basement-involved faulting and folding, which mostly terminate upward in these weak layers. Analog modeling results suggest that the lowermost and widely distributed décollement layer in the Lulehe Formation likely facilitated long-distance rapid propagation of deformation into the basin interior. Information about another person's movement kinematics obtained through visual observation activates brain regions involved in motor learning. Observation-related changes in these brain areas are associated with adaptive changes to feedforward neural control of muscle activation and behavioral improvements in limb movement control. However, little is known about the stability of these observation-related effects over time. Here, we used force channel trials to probe changes in lateral force production at various time points (1 min, 10 min, 30 min, 60 min, 24 h) after participants either physically performed, or observed another individual performing upper limb reaching movements that were perturbed by novel, robot-generated forces (a velocity-dependent force-field). Observers learned to predictively generate directionally and temporally specific compensatory forces during reaching, consistent with the idea that they acquired an internal representation of the novel dynamics. Participants who physically practiced in the force-field showed adaptation that was detectable at all time points, with some decay detected after 24 h. Observation-related adaptation was less temporally stable in comparison, decaying slightly after 1 h and undetectable at 24 h. Observation induced less adaptation overall than physical practice, which could explain differences in temporal stability. Visually acquired representations of movement dynamics are retained and continue to influence behavior for at least 1 h after observation. Bradykinesia is a term describing several manifestations of movement disruption caused by Parkinson's disease (PD), including movement slowing, amplitude reduction, and gradual decrease of speed and amplitude over multiple repetitions of the same movement. Deep brain stimulation (DBS) of the subthalamic nucleus (STN) improves bradykinesia in patients with PD. We examined the effect of DBS on specific components of bradykinesia when applied at two locations within the STN, using signal processing techniques to identify the time course of amplitude and frequency of repeated hand pronation-supination movements performed by participants with and without PD. Stimulation at either location increased movement amplitude, increased frequency, and decreased variability, though not to the range observed in the control group. Amplitude and frequency showed decrement within trials, which was similar in PD and control groups and did not change with DBS. Decrement across trials, by contrast, differed between PD and control groups, and was reduced by stimulation. We conclude that DBS improves specific aspects of movement that are disrupted by PD, whereas it does not affect short-term decrement that could reflect muscular fatigue. Hamstring strain injuries (HSIs) are prevalent in sports involving high-speed running and most of the HSIs are biceps femoris long head (BFlh) injuries. The primary cause for HSIs during high-speed running remains controversial due to the lack of in vivo measurement of the BFlh muscle behavior during running. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to quantify the muscle-tendon unit (MTU) and fascicle behavior of BFlh during running. Seven college male sprinters (22.14 ± 1.8 years; 177.7 ± 2.5 cm; 70.57 ± 5.1 kg; personal bests in 100m: 11.1 ± 0.2 s) were tested on a motorized treadmill instrumented with two force plate for running at 4, 5, 6m/s. The ground reaction force (GRF), 3D lower limb kinematics, EMG, and ultrasound images of biceps femoris long head (BFlh) in the middle region were recorded simultaneously. BFlh fascicles undergo little length change (about 1 cm) in the late swing phase during running at three submaximal speeds. BFlh fascicle lengthening accounted for about 30% of MTU length change during the late swing phase. BFlh was most active during the late swing and early stance phases, ranging from 83% MVC at a running speed of 4 m/s to 116% MVC at 6 m/s. Muscle fascicles in the middle region of BF1h undergo relatively little lengthening relative to the MTU in the late swing phase during running in comparison to results from simulation studies.
