This study analyzed checkout data from hardback and paperback volumes in the BYU library to determine if there was a difference in circulation rates. Based on usage from 2000 through 2020, hardback volumes are no more likely to circulate than paperbacks over that 20 year range, regardless of when the book was added to the collection or its subject (i.e. humanities, sciences, or social sciences). Also, the average number of circulations for these volumes was low enough that damage to a paperback book was unlikely. Given the lower price of paperbacks, academic library budgets may be better served buying paperbacks. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The European Universities Initiative (EUI) was established in 2017. Its aim is to strengthen strategic partnerships between higher education institutions across the EU by building networks of universities. At the end of 2023, there were already 50 European University Alliances gathering 430 higher education (HE) institutions. In each of these Alliances, academic libraries are members, too. These libraries are already involved in intra-alliance projects, and these alliances will probably happen more often due to the EU's project-driven approach. This practice paper is, to the authors' knowledge, the first attempt to describe another challenge that European academic libraries currently face i.e., project management practice. The alliance partner universities operate under distinct national laws and institutional practices, making it challenging to easily align them for effective cross-university collaborations. Familiarity with the theoretical principles of EU project management and project management methodology greatly facilitates the preparation of the proposal and the work of the project. It also allows more effective management of the project as a whole or its individual parts. This paper maps the challenges that work in international projects brings and provides suggestions on how EUI libraries can utilize project management techniques, while also aiming at showing the paths to facilitate cooperation. Drawing from an analysis of the literature on project management that might apply in library-led projects to strengthen communities of purpose, the paper is based on the example of the work experience on the project TRAIN4EU, that was co-led by the academic librarians from the University of Warsaw Library, Poland, and run by 4EU + universities. The paper investigated the usage of mobile technology in marketing academic libraries in developing countries. The main purpose, apart from awareness, is to look at how researchers are studying mobile technology in marketing academic libraries, what are the current issues investigated and what has to be the direction of the topic globally. The paper employed 23 research papers for systematic review. The findings reveal that academic libraries are aware of mobile technology and use it at various levels for academic library promotion, visibility, and teaching and learning. Factors influencing the use of mobile technology in marketing academic libraries were identified and further noted that little has been studied regarding mobile technology in marketing academic libraries and its performance in developing countries. This paper investigates the potential of the Gamified Metaverse as a platform for promoting library services. The study compares the effectiveness of a traditional library program with a Metaverse- based library program in terms of knowledge acquisition and library anxiety. The research also examines students' perceptions of implementing gamification within the context of the Gamified Metaverse platform. A mixed-methods approach was adopted, including pre- and post-test analysis, statistical analysis, and qualitative data collection. The results indicate that both the traditional and Metaverse-based library programs effectively increased the participants' knowledge, with no significant difference between the two approaches. However, the Metaverse-based program was found to be less effective in facilitating interaction with librarians and reducing library anxiety. Additionally, students expressed positive perceptions of implementing gamification in the Gamified Metaverse platform, finding it engaging and motivating. These findings contribute to the understanding of the effect of the Metaverse as a tool for promoting library services and enhancing knowledge acquisition. However, it is not as effective in reducing library anxiety, particularly in terms of interaction with librarians and staff. It should be noted that the platform may have limitations such as high costs and potential side effects of virtual reality, making it more suitable as an additional tool for promoting library services, taking into account its feasibility and potential benefits for specific student populations and larger libraries. This paper reports on a study on delinquent acts in three academic libraries in northern Ghana. A survey method was used for the study and a questionnaire was used to collect data. The study population consisted of staff in the Reader Service Sections of the three libraries. The study found that failure to observe library regulations, keeping overdue materials, eating in the library, littering, reserving seats unjustifiably, and hiding of books for the purpose of monopoly are examples of delinquent acts practiced by library users. According to the participants, the main reasons for delinquent acts are inadequate orientation to users, insufficient copies of books, and indiscipline among library users. The respondents further reported that these actions led to a reduction in library resources and low patronage. To curb deviant behaviors in libraries, the study recommends the adoption of pragmatic approaches including massive orientation for users, imbibing positive library culture that fosters respect, bolstering commitment and cooperation among library users and the staff, increasing library budgets as well as finding more creative ways of acquiring more copies of books, such as using Open Educational Resources (OERs), belonging to consortia and building and/or enhancing existing Institutional Repositories (IR). This paper explores the relationship between digital literacy and employability within Australian university libraries through institutional digital literacy frameworks through the research question: How do Australian university libraries incorporate employability discourse within their digital literacy frameworks? There is an established discourse on the practical application of information and digital literacies in professional contexts, espoused by universities. However, there has not been obvious linkages between employability and digital literacy, but rather implicit linkages that digital literacy is critical in enhancing student employability. The value of information and digital literacy is evident in many Australian university libraries’ initiatives as they respond to the focus on graduate employability by acknowledging changes in workplace skills with the increasing proliferation of digital technologies. Overall, this paper explores what relationships there are among Australian Universities’ digital literacy frameworks within the larger context of universities’ responsibility in enhancing their graduates’ employability and how and to what extent, if any these have been communicated with the content of the frameworks. AbstractThe purpose of this paper was to discuss the collaborative initiative between the Mona Library (ML) and the Library and Information Association of Jamaica (LIAJA) focused on digitizing the Association’s peer-reviewed publications, specifically the Jamaica Library Association (JLA) Bulletin and the LIAJA Bulletin, for enhanced access and preservation. The paper also addressed the compilation of a second index for the LIAJA Bulletin, covering the period from 2007 to its electronic publication in 2014. This second index was intended to complement the first index, which was compiled from 1950 to 2006. This collaborative project presented numerous challenges and benefits, offering valuable insights for future initiatives. Key benefits for the library included the enhancement of staff competencies, strengthening of institutional reputation, increased growth and visibility, and the preservation of Jamaican and Caribbean librarians’ scholarly output for future generations. The research aims to explore the paths and strategies of combining the academic libraries construction with the new Development Concept proposed by Resolution of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China on Further Deepening Reform Comprehensively to Advance Chinese-style Modernization (hereinafter, Resolution), and put forward some suggestions for the high-quality development of academic libraries. Focused on the cultural construction of libraries, this paper adopted a problem-oriented approach, emphasizing the combination of theorical and practical research. On the theoretical level, it analyzed the key points and significance of the Resolution, and systematically reviewed relevant literature, such as the research of scholars namely Chen Jianlong, Chu Jingli, Ke Ping, Shaughnessy T, Ostrow R, etc. On the practical level, it summarized the achievements and shortcomings in the development of academic libraries, and then discussed the paths and methods for addressing these issues. It is believed that since the reform and opening up, the development of academic libraries has made great progress, basically solving the problems of "nowhere to study" (insufficient space for reading) and "no books to read" (lack of reading materials) for university and college students, and the modernization of equipment and facilities is approaching international first-class level. However, there still exist some problems, especially: 1) the outdated organizational system, with low capacities in providing precise services and document and resource support; 2) an overemphasis on hardware consturction instead of industry-leading experts; 3) unstable development and low sustainability; 4) discrepancy between theoretical research and practical experience. Through the analysis of subjective and objective factors, the paper attributed the above shortcomings to insufficient cultural construction, especially the institutional construction. The research believes that in order to promote the high-quality development of China's academic libraries, it is necessary to build a new library cultural system that integrates national features, new quality productive forces, inclusiveness and cohesion, characterized by academic nature, digital intelligence, and socialization. It proposed four main tasks for academic libraries to continuously deepen the system and institutions reform. 1) To promote academic culture, including improving academic evaluation mechanisms, strengthening the discipline service organization system, promoting the construction of future learning centers, etc. 2) To promote digital culture, including enhancing the level of digital awareness, strengthening the application of data in areas such as decision-making management, resource development, service scenarios, and scholarly services. 3) To promote innovative spirit and the construction of a high- quality librarian team, especially to enhance the digital intelligence competencies of the librarians, establish a normalized mechanism for personnel recruitment, and expand user participation channels. 4) To promote the spirit of value co-creation, set up a multi-level platform for interaction and integration, improve the incentive mechanisms for the participation of library development, and build a new cultural ecosystem of integrated development. Purpose: Although universities have extensive research and initiatives in place that align with the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), there is still a significant gap in documenting and assessing these efforts. This paper aims to discuss how academic libraries can apply their information management skills and open-access platforms, to facilitate the discoverability and retrieval of evidence on SDGs. Design/methodology/approach: Introduced by a brief literature review on the role of libraries in contributing to the SDGs in general, the authors draw on their personal experiences as metadata specialists, participating in a project aimed at linking their university's research output to the SDGs. A case study, from the University of Pretoria's Veterinary Science Library, is used as an example to demonstrate the benefits of resourceful metadata in organising, communicating and raising awareness about the SDGs in the field of veterinary science. Findings: Through practical examples and recommended workflows, this paper illustrates that metadata specialists are perfectly positioned to apply their information management skills and library platforms to facilitate the discoverability and retrieval of evidence on SDGs. It underscores the potential of mobile technology to enhance library services' economic and sustainable operation. Notably, the library's stack area frequently experiences congestion, poor internet connectivity, and insufficient infrastructure for routine operations. The importance and urgency of IPLE (intellectual property literacy education) are increasingly prominent. This paper aims to build an IPLE mode to provide support for the talent cultivation in university libraries facing opportunities and challenges in the service transformation period. The IPLE mode and content of the Regional Patent Information Centers (PIZ Regional Centers) in German universities and university libraries are studied through network research, literature research, and comparative analysis. Based on the practical experience, educational characteristics and advantages, this paper constructs an IPLE mode of university library that includes six modules. Building the IPLE mode of university libraries can provide reference for university libraries in the work of IPLE, and gradually form an IPLE system that meets the needs of users' training, conforms to the university's talent training objectives, and improves the development plan of the university libraries. This study examines the editorial endogeny of Library and Information Science journals. The endogeny was determined by the analysis of (1) papers published by the journal's editors, (2) papers published by the journal's country of origin, and (3) journal self-citation. The study used five-year coverage based on journals listed in the Web of Science. Regarding the editorial endogeny, the cut-off line of 50% of publications was at 4.51%. However, some journals have concentrated this endogeny from 20% to 45%. The endogenous model developed with the three analyses generated a journal efficiency system that showed a moderate index by the quartile of the journals, with an average of four endogenous papers per journal. 50% of the publications obtained an average of 10.70% self-citations. But part of the 50% most endogenous journals obtained indices ranging from 11% to 75.99%, with ten journals over 30%. 50% of papers are from the journal's country of origin. We conclude that the levels of endogeny were balanced on average, but some journals abused it to improve their ranking and impact. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In Part 2 "Pedagogical opportunities, including integration into an information literacy programme" the methodology applies contextual analysis, including systematic literature review. The paper highlights how virtual reality has great potential as a technology for learning and social engagement. However, the need for clear policies is highlighted regarding technology, along with the need to invest in infrastructure and resources, fostering collaboration among stakeholders and promoting equity and access. Artificial intelligence (AI) has emerged as an innovative technology with the potential to revolutionize various industries including libraries and information science. Academic libraries are increasingly adopting artificial intelligence (AI) to enhance services, improve efficiency, and enhance user experience. This study utilizes a bibliometric approach to comprehensively analyze current research on AI in academic libraries (AI in ALs). This study employed bibliometric indicators to identify key trends, patterns, and research gaps in the existing literature. A comprehensive dataset of 373 research papers on AI in ALs published between 2002 and 2022 was collected and analyzed using the Scopus database. Various bibliometric tools, such as Biblioshiny, VOSviewer, and BibExcel, have enhanced this analysis. The findings of this study provide important insights. By 2022, there were 64 publications, constituting 17.16% of the total corpus, accompanied by 65 citations. In contrast, 2019 witnessed only 33 publications yet accumulated a substantial number of citations, amounting to 294, representing 8.85% of the overall citations. Conference papers exhibited the highest frequency among different publication types, with 165 publications, whereas journal articles had the highest citation count, accumulating 217 citations. Geographically, China emerged as the leading contributor with 119 publications, and Wuhan University stood out as the most prominent affiliation. Notably, the "Lecture Notes in Computer Science" series emerged as the most prolific source title, publishing 15 articles, of which eight were cited. This institutional case study analyses 1723 sources referenced in five PhD theses awarded at Alphacrucis University College between 2017 and 2021. The purpose was to demonstrate that the library’s collection development policy is successfully guiding purchasing decisions in order to provide students with the resources they need to complete their research at high levels. Sources were extracted from each thesis and grouped according to type. Library holdings were then checked, revealing that, overall, 70.2% of all cited sources were available from the AC library collection. AbstractThe paper aims to discuss ChatGPT and its role in academic libraries. It identifies the key areas where ChatGPT can be implemented in libraries to improve various services and the overall work experience of academics, along with the risk factors associated with ChatGPT. Research finds that ChatGPT can be aided with many library services such as collection development management, virtual reference services, digital information service and library discovery, research writing and publishing, research performance analysis and bibliometric services. It can be helpful for libraries to meet patron requirements, streamline the research process, and increase the efficiency of the library and staff. It reduces the workload of library staff to a certain extent rather than replacing the human librarians as various threats are associated with the ChatGPT, such as incorrect query responses, data protection, misuse, privacy, security, inaccessibility, limited technology comprehension and other ethical issues. It also discusses the limitations and challenges libraries may face while implementing the technology to impart various services. The importance of this study lies in the fact that it acknowledges the reality of ChatGPT and its limitations and how the library will be ready to cope with and deal with the technology in the future. The study reveals that by establishing stringent selection criteria, formulating a comprehensive evaluation framework, and forging strategic alliances with student management and academic faculties, coupled with the adept use of digital and social media platforms, the "Weiming Reading Star" exemplifies a selection practice that thrives on continuous feedback and iterative improvement. This model provides a foundational blueprint for academic libraries, illuminating pathways to effectively cultivate a campus reading culture. Looking forward, the selection process is poised to embrace a more diverse array of indicators, refine evaluation mechanisms, and delve into the nuances of students' reading interests and potentials. The system is set to refine criteria for different reading behaviors, ensuring a comprehensive and equitable assessment of students' literary engagements. The initiative also envisions the introduction of a variety of honor awards to celebrate a broader spectrum of reading achievements. Moreover, the integration of interactive activities aims to amplify students' motivation and participation, while the application of advanced technologies such as data analysis and artificial intelligence is anticipated to assist personalized reading services, tailored to meet individual student needs. Purpose: The advancement of technology has brought much uncertainty in the access and utilization of information resources in academic libraries. This research sought to determine the extent to which academic libraries in Kenya engage in innovation and use innovative strategies. In addition, this study aims to identify the specific innovation practices and strategies used by these libraries to ensure they effectively address users' information needs and remain relevant within the Kenyan context. Design/methodology/approach: This study adopted a qualitative research design. Data was collected using face-to-face interviews that targeted key personnel in the academic library system, including the university librarian, the circulation librarian and the digital/systems librarian. In total, 21 respondents were interviewed in this study. Additional data was gathered by examining primary documents such as academic library policies, university websites and library brochures, among other sources. The study used purposive sampling techniques to select the population sample and the theoretical saturation to determine the sample size. Findings: The study revealed a pressing need for change in the academic library landscape in Kenya. It established that the concept of innovation and innovation strategies is still new in academic libraries in Kenya, and libraries are still confined to traditional and routine duties. There is a lack of appropriate strategies for enhancing innovation practices/strategies in academic libraries. The paper, therefore, strongly recommends the reorganization of academic libraries in Kenya. Originality/value: To the best of the authors' knowledge, this research is the first to analyze innovation strategies and practices in academic libraries in Kenya. Text and data mining activities—that is, the automated processing of digital materials to uncover new knowledge—have become more frequent in all areas of scientific research. Because they require a massive use of copyrighted work, there are evident conflicts with copyright legislation. Countries at the forefront of research and development have begun to address this issue. This paper presents the basic aspects of legislation applicable to text and data mining activities. It offers a detailed comparative analysis of the norms of the main jurisdictions that have regulated them to date, highlighting in each case the positive and negative aspects. The study aimed at investigating the use of grey literature by postgraduate students of chemistry in Nnamdi Azikiwe University (NAU), Awka. A total of 85 theses submitted to the Department of Chemistry library from 2013 to 2022 were analysed. Six objectives relevant in exploring the utilisation of grey literature by researchers of chemistry were formulated. The research design adopted in this study was bibliometric research design. The findings of the study revealed that out of 4740 citations obtained from the 85 theses, 1380 (29.11%) citations were made to grey literature. It was observed that citations to grey literature increased rapidly in recent time with 89.35% increase. Conference and seminar papers were the most cited sources out of the eleven kinds of grey literature cited. The most cited grey document was World Health Organization report paper with 67 (29.52%) citations. The finding of the study also showed that postgraduate students of chemistry use current material with medium age of 8.35 years. Citations to foreign contributions amount to 644 (27.54%). In conclusion, emphasis was laid on the need for the University Library to gear efforts towards providing adequate current grey literature for teaching and research of Department of Chemistry. Purpose: Globally, mobile technology is a significant factor influencing how libraries are changing the ways of delivering services to today's users. This paper aims to explore academic librarians' perceptions of the usefulness of mobile technology in delivering library services and the efforts required for its successful adoption. Design/methodology/approach: The study was conducted within an interpretive paradigm. The research objectives were underpinned by the unified theory of acceptance and use of technology as a theoretical framework. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and analyses using NVIVO for thematic analysis. Findings: Results show that, in general, academic librarians support the use of mobile technology to provide services such as access to eBooks and Journals, Online Public Access Catalogue, Bookmyne application, information literacy consultations and training. Library managers, fellow librarians and users were identified as encouraging the adoption of mobile technology to enhance library services. The paper further confirms that the successful adoption of mobile technology requires some effort. However, due to some of the challenges presented in the study, a majority of respondents felt that their libraries are not yet ready to fully embrace mobile technology the way it is envisioned in today's world. Practical implications: The study endeavours to address the divergence between students and academic librarians' viewpoints regarding the application of mobile technology in the provision of library services. An increasingly complex and demanding research landscape has seen university libraries rapidly evolve their services. While research data management, bibliometrics, and research impact services have predominantly featured in the literature to date, the full scope of support libraries are currently providing to their institutions is unknown. This paper aims to present an up-to-date view of the scope and extent of research support services by university libraries across Australia and Aotearoa New Zealand. A coding process analyzed content data from university library websites. Eleven research support areas were identified. Service delivery is split between synchronous and asynchronous modes. This paper describes a lived experience of an evidence-based library and information practice approach to improving research support services at two Australian university libraries, and while it highlights continued maturation of research support services, more research is needed to better understand influences on service development. While there is a rich literature reporting the prevalence of data sharing in many academic disciplines, and particularly STEM-related ones, the extent of data sharing in journals in Social Science fields has been subject to only little empirical enquiry, hitherto. Focusing on a particular Social Science discipline, Education, this research examines empirically two related issues associated with data sharing in Education. First, journal data sharing policies were scrutinized via a search of the websites of 47 randomly selected Education journals. Over half of the journals in the representative sample had issued statements on websites encouraging authors to make the data underlying published research, generally available to the academic community, though only a handful of journals make such sharing mandatory. Thus, while the importance of data sharing is well recognized by journals in the Education field, a sizeable minority seems not to have taken a stand on this issue. The second issue related to the efficacy of the positive stance taken by journals, in eliciting the desired response from authors, leading to the sharing of their data. This was probed in a limited, mainly qualitative, survey of the authors of papers published in journals that encouraged data sharing through their websites. It was found that not a single author had made data available – indeed, some authors were even unaware of the journal's policy on this matter. Thus, journals' well-intentioned procedures to encourage greater data sharing are seen to be markedly ineffective. Two main sets of reasons were offered to justify author reticence to data share: either authors did not regard it as being in their interest or data sharing was seen to be inappropriate or not possible for the data set in question. However, these fears relating to engaging in data sharing may not necessarily present insurmountable barriers to its wider adoption, as measures are available to circumvent, at least partially, or to meliorate their effect. This paper reports on the perceptions of Spanish academic libraries regarding Open Science (OS). OS is irrupting into academia and academic librarians need to support researchers. On the other side, researchers need to be ready to change their scientific behaviour in relation to publications and research data. We conducted a focus group with 8 academic librarians. We also sent a survey to (N = 67) academic libraries, obtaining a response rate of 71.6%. In the survey, we asked for drivers and constraints for OS services as well as for any training taking place. Our results show that facilitators are the system relationships (SD = 4.74) and internal promotion of systems relationships (SD = 4.54). In relation to the level of knowledge of OS, both researchers (SD = 3.27) and librarians have a high level in terms of the OA area (SD = 4.15) but little development of the rest of the components of OS. On the other hand, in relation to training librarians, results indicated that OA (SD = 4.79), Open Data (SD = 4.79) and new evaluation models (SD = 4.79) should be part of the training for researchers. The results of the focus group reinforce some of the indicators mentioned. We conclude that academic libraries may train researchers in OS through the acquisition of new skills and trainers-training and with the strategic support of the university. We argue that academic incentives and a change in research accreditation are also needed to shift researchers' perceptions in relation to OS. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The advent and universal of scholarly communication and the widely application of artificial intelligence in digital scholarship have posed both opportunities and challenges for academic libraries with patrons anticipating more diversified library services delivered through convenient, customized and refined ways. This paper aims to investigate the current development of digital scholarship services in China's academic libraries and explore how these services can be reshaped based on user relationship management. With methods of literature review, the development trends and innovative models of digital scholarship services of academic libraries were studied. By website surveys, it probed into the digital scholarship services and the operational structure of libraries from 42 of the first-class universities in China. The study reveals a comparison of digital scholarship services in China and abroad and concludes that the digital scholarship services in academic libraries in China are still in its infancy. Although academic libraries are attentive to user relationships and continuously adapt their services to meet the diverse needs of users, there is a scarcity of universities capable of delivering comprehensive research services according to the scientific research paradigm and only a small fraction of the surveyed libraries have specific digital service department. Based on the theoretical foundation of user relationship management in the Compass Report for Academic Libraries on User Relationship Management released by Steering Committee of Academic Libraries in China, it proposes to remodel digital scholarly services in academic libraries in the context of digital scholarly communication from five perspectives. (1) To identify specific user demands according to scientific research life circle including data access, storage, analysis, and sharing. (2) To recognize different patterns of demands among disciplines and communities, constructing user profiles with differentiated service indicators and goals for efficient services. (3) To subdivide the digital scholarship services into three categories as basic services, expected services and value-added services based on the KANO model with detailed contents and standards to meet multi-level user demands. (4) To construct a multi-dimensional user management platform, integrating user data with library operational data to present the academic needs, research trends and service expectations of users and accurately evaluate the services through user feedback mechanisms. (5) To emphasis the importance of staff training by developing digital competencies, practices and knowledge to augment support for digital scholarship services. Academic libraries are experiencing drastic changes due to unprecedented advancements in technology. This advancement has caused changes in users' information-seeking behavior, increased information competitors, and easy access and availability to free information on the internet. It is unfortunate that all this is happening amidst the dwindling financial support libraries receive from their parent organization. This paper discusses perceptions regarding the roles of PhD- and MLS (or MLIS)-holding librarians within academic libraries in the United States gathered via a survey conducted in 2019. Based on a review of previous literature and the results of the survey—which present mixed opinions about PhD holders as librarians—the authors provide recommendations for ways libraries can effectively address some of the tensions regarding the role of PhD holders within academic librarianship. Purpose: This study aims to examine Big Data and the management of libraries in the era of the Fourth Industrial Revolution and its implications for policymakers in Nigeria. Design/methodology/approach: A qualitative methodology was used, involving the administration of open-ended questionnaires to librarians from six selected federal universities located in Southwest Nigeria. Findings: The findings of this research highlight that a significant proportion of librarians are well-acquainted with the relevance of big data and its potential to positively revolutionize library services. Librarians generally express favorable opinions concerning the relevance of big data, acknowledging its capacity to enhance decision-making, optimize services and deliver personalized user experiences. Research limitations/implications: This study exclusively focuses on the Nigerian context, overlooking insights from other African countries. As a result, it may not be possible to generalize the study's findings to the broader African library community. Librarians are frequently consulted on various topics, a central one being the proper citation of sources. Information literacy sessions, taught by librarians, are usually taught in less than an hour and may not cover the use of visual resources. To support teaching and research, outside the classroom, librarians develop research guides to provide scholarly resources and guidance on how to properly cite them. Often, the use of visual resources and proper citation for them are absent from research guides dealing with citation styles. This paper presents a study of research guides on image use and citation by determining which U.S. libraries in the Association of Research Libraries (ARL) currently maintain guides on the legalities of citing copyrighted works, provide citation guidance, as well as examples. The introduction of ChatGPT 3.5 in November 2022 ignited a sensation in the academic community, leaving many astounded by its capabilities. This new release more closely emulates human responses than its predecessors. Among its remarkable capabilities, it can answer questions, catalog items in MARC21, recommend reading lists, and make suggestions on a wide array of topics. To assess ChatGPT’s efficacy in aiding library users, the authors of this paper conducted an experiment comparing ChatGPT’s performance with that of librarians in answering reference questions. Thirty questions were randomly selected from the transaction log of the reference inquiries between June 1, 2023 to July 31, 2023 at the Rider University Libraries. These queries constituted 34% of the total user questions during this two-month period. The authors compared the answers by ChatGPT and those by reference librarians for their accuracy, relevance, and friendliness. The findings indicate that reference librarians markedly outperformed their robotic counterpart. An evident issue arises from ChatGPT’s deficiency in understanding local policies and practices. This consequently hinders its ability to provide satisfactory answers in those areas. OpenAI posits that ChatGPT’s proficiency can be enhanced through targeted fine-tuning using locally specific information. At the moment, ChatGPT remains a great tool for librarians. The main purpose of this paper is to investigate the level of adoption of artificial intelligence(AI) to support library services delivery in university libraries in Africa. Qualitative research method was adopted to collect data. A preliminary survey of 102 university libraries in English speaking countries in Africa was conducted to identify the university libraries that have adopted AI in their libraries. Content analysis was used to analyse the responses. The study found that the only few university libraries in Africa have adopted AI technologies such as Chatbot, ChatGPT, LibKey from ThirdIron, robots, RFID technology and Grammarly. These AI technologies are used to render different library services like answering of directional and ready reference questions posed by library users, serving as a knowledge base for cataloguing information of library materials, self-check-out machine for books, used as a marketing tool for the library, tool for statistics evaluation and recommendations, assisting in the charging and discharging of library materials, etc. Lack of funds to acquire the AI tools, training of librarians, and lack of full knowledge of AI were the most mentioned challenges associated with adoption of AI in the libraries. The study recommended a formulation of policy to guide the adoption of new technologies such as AI, and training and re-training of librarians through workshops equip librarians with skills needed to effectively use the AI technologies. According to Scopus, China is the nation that produces the highest volume of scientific research but is also the nation with the highest number of retractions, suggesting there are issues connected to research and publishing ethics within the Chinese publishing infrastructure. One source of negative reputation may be the selection of journals with questionable reputation, including "predatory" journals. In 2020, the Center of Scientometrics (CoS) in China established a list of "problematic" journals, called the Chinese Early Warning Journal List (EWJL), the only national watchlist in China, to support Chinese academics and the Ministry of Science and Technology of China. EWJL ranks journals as either low, medium or high risk. There are benefits if EWJL is accurate, valid and complete. However, close examination of the CoS website and EWJL functionality revealed several deficiencies. This paper debates those weaknesses within the wider context of publication in low-quality journals, offering suggestions for improvement that would be necessary for EWJL to become more trustworthy, and to better enable the continual reform of Chinese publishing culture. This paper reports an investigation into the perception of academic librarians on data competency in their daily roles across various library departments in the United States and Canada. Through a survey, we sought to uncover the scope of data-related tasks librarians are engaged in, the tools they use, their aspirations for professional development in data competencies, and their expectations from Library and Information Science (LIS) education programs. The findings reveal a complex engagement pattern with data tasks, with librarians in data-specific roles dedicating a considerable portion of their work to these activities, while the majority engage less frequently, indicating that data tasks are a minor part of their overall responsibilities. Despite a limited frequency of data visualization in their current roles, there is a pronounced interest among librarians to enhance skills in this area. Our study identifies a crucial need for improved competencies in data management and collection development, especially in roles related to cataloging, library systems, and special collections. Additionally, our findings reveal a critical gap between academic libraries' demand for data skills and the content coverage in MLIS programs, emphasizing the need for curriculum updates to prepare librarians for the evolving information landscape. Textbook affordability programs and the promotion of OER are well-established priorities for many academic libraries, but few studies have examined the prevalence of such programs either in general or across institution types. This paper presents the results of a study designed to gather information about textbook affordability initiatives at university libraries that are members Association of Research Libraries. It uses information from the publicly available websites of ARL libraries in the United States to determine how many of those institutions maintain textbook affordability programs, with those figures further broken down by status (public/private) and membership in the Open Education Network. In addition, the findings reveal some notable characteristics of textbook affordability programs, including an overall lack of visibility on institutional websites, a marked variety in financial incentives, and evidence of programs that have been discontinued. The research paper investigates doctoral students' information literacy (IL), a demographic often overlooked in IL studies. Focusing on the unique context of Polish doctoral schools, the paper explores the competences of young researchers. The methodological and descriptive objectives of the study include creating and validating the ILDoc tool and evaluating the self-efficacy in terms of information competences of doctoral students. The research employs the Computer Assisted Web Interview (CAWI) technique, targeting doctoral students from five Polish universities (Jagiellonian University, University of Gdańsk, Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń, University of Warmia and Mazury in Olsztyn, and University of Warsaw). Through Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA), Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA), and Structural Equation Modeling (SEM), the study refines the ILDoc model, identifying four latent factors: Information Access, Information Retrieval, Reference Management, and Information Analysis. The findings highlight the critical importance of IL in academic librarianship, particularly underscoring gaps in advanced searching and reference management skills. While gender and age appear to have no significant impact, the year of study and successful midterm evaluations do influence IL self-efficacy. Additionally, the field of study affects students' abilities in information access and analysis. The study advocates for customized IL training and support for doctoral students. It also calls for ongoing IL training that aligns with the evolving research processes of doctoral students, emphasizing the collaborative role of librarians and faculty. This paper introduces a novel collections-based outreach model for special collections, underscoring the vital role of outreach in linking unique and distinctive collections (UDCs) with existing interest groups. Drawing from a series of successful events, focused on knitting, held at the McGill University Library between 2021 and 2023, the model recommends the use of creative initiatives to engage pre-existing communities. These initiatives attracted a global audience, extending far beyond the university campus, and fostered connections between cultural heritage collections and specialized communities. A small branch of a large academic library is in the process of relocating from one area of campus to another. Although the new space is drastically smaller than what they currently have, the librarian wishes to build upon the small maker area that was recently created for the relaxation and enjoyment of patrons. With the SCAFFOLD makerspace design framework, this new area will be created using the latest research in making and learning, keeping inclusivity at the forefront of all activities. This paper describes the current maker area, what the plans are for the new space, and how that space will be designed using this new SCAFFOLD method. An essential component of the academic knowledge infrastructure is the services provided by the library to its community of students, staff, and stakeholders. The University of Queensland library recently transitioned from a service model of individual discipline focused librarians to one where Outreach Librarians and Learning & Research Librarians deliver services with an explicit team approach, enabling the future vision of the Library to be seen as an essential component of the academic knowledge infrastructure of UQ. The transition took place over an extended 18-month period, with ten project groups formed from the librarian group to focus on service review and to reconsider the operational processes to implement the required changes. In this paper we discuss the creation of the Stephen Hawking Archive through processes of collaboration, and human and technological mediation. We focus on the production of documents including scientific and popular writings, correspondence and lectures in different media and forms of communication from handwriting, diagrams and typing to word processing and digital communication. We consider these processes to think about what is important in the Stephen Hawking Archive, including where authorship is located, and what this shows about scientific collaboration and communication in the late twentieth and early twenty-first century. We also briefly consider how archivists have mediated the Archive since it was received by Cambridge University Library (CUL) in 2021 through its arrangement and description, and we look forward to developing the Archive in the future, including the possibility of acquiring further digital files to include in the Archive. The development of digital and mobile technology has led to the emergence of digital scholarship, which is a challenge but also an opportunity for higher education institutions to improve their space and relevant services to support students' success. The purpose of this study is to explore university students' needs and expectations on digital scholarship spaces and relevant services in an academic library, as well as the differences in this based on gender, academic identity, and subject being studied. We conducted a survey at Shipai campus of Jinan University in Guangzhou to collect and analyze users' needs and expectations. Among the digital scholarship service, the demand scores of the top three services are text recognition and full-text processing with 7.00, academic paper writing, submission, publication, and dissemination consulting services with 6.86, and digitization of printed documents with 6.72. Elsewhere, the demand score of the top three spaces are the online digital scholarship space with 6.57, the research project application and exchange space with 6.43, and the text analysis, data analysis, Big Data, and visualization service center with 6.27. With the improvement of academic identity, the demand for digital scholarship services is higher. Gender has led to differences in a small number of space needs, while the differences brought about by the subject being studied are more significant. This research contributes to the understanding of how the digital technology, the students' spaces needs, and relevant management practice merge in academic libraries for students' learning and research purposes. These have implications for universities to improve their libraries' space services oriented to the diverse users' digital scholarship needs in the current digital learning environment. The continuous development of science and technology has led to the gradual digitization and intelligence of campus construction. To apply facial recognition technology to construct smart libraries in higher education, this study optimizes traditional facial recognition algorithm models. Firstly, a smart management system for university libraries is designed with facial recognition as the core, and secondly, the traditional FaceNet network is optimized. Combined with MobileNet, Attention mechanism, Receptive field module and Mish activation function, the improved multitask face recognition convolutional neural network is built and used in the construction of university smart library. The performance verification of the constructed model shows that the feature matching error value of the model in a stable state is only 0.04. The recognition accuracy in the dataset is as high as 99.05%, with a recognition error as low as 0.51%. The facial recognition model used in university smart libraries can achieve 97.6% teacher satisfaction and 96.8% student satisfaction. In summary, the facial recognition model constructed by this paper has good recognition performance and can provide effective technical support for the construction of smart libraries.
