Meeting the diverse delay requirements of emerging wireless applications is one of the most critical goals for the design of ultra-dense networks. Although the delay of point-to-point communications has been well investigated using classical queueing theory, the delay of multipoint- to-multipoint communications, such as in ultra-dense networks, has not been explored in depth. The main technical difficulty lies in the interacting queues problem, in which the service rate is coupled with the statuses of other queues. In this article, we elaborate on the main challenges in the delay analysis in ultra-dense networks. Several promising approaches, such as introducing the dominant system and the simplified system, to bypass these difficulties are proposed and summarized to provide useful guidance. In modern mobile telecommunications, shadow fading has to be modeled by a two-dimensional (2D) correlated random variable since shadow fading may present both cross-correlation and spatial correlation due to the presence of similar obstacles during the propagation. In this paper, 2D correlated random shadowing is generated based on the multi-resolution frequency domain ParFlow (MR-FDPF) model. The MR-FDPF model is a 2D deterministic radio propagation model, so a 2D deterministic shadowing can be firstly extracted from it. Then, a 2D correlated random shadowing can be generated by considering the extracted 2D deterministic shadowing to be a realization of it. Moreover, based on the generated 2D correlated random shadowing, a complete 2D semi-deterministic path loss model can be proposed. A comprehensive understanding of the fading effect on vehicular communications is essential for reliable intelligent transportation system (ITS). Dozens of experiments were performed in the real urban area to collect various types of vehicular wireless data measurements. Then a simulation model of radio link between double mobile nodes was proposed. Based on the real measured data, the proposed model, and the existing model are all applied to the simulator for comparison. It is shown that by evaluating the packet level performance for double mobile vehicles in an urban area, the proposed model performed better. Significant realism can be added to existing systems with clear implications on the design of upper layer protocols by modeling the fading characters for vehicular communications. In this paper, we provide a full analysis of the information propagation speed in bidirectional vehicular delay tolerant networks such as roads or highways. The provided analysis shows that a phase transition occurs concerning the information propagation speed, with respect to the vehicle densities in each direction of the highway. We prove that under a certain threshold, information propagates on average at vehicle speed, while above this threshold, information propagates dramatically faster at a speed that increases quasi-exponentially when the vehicle density increases. We provide the exact expressions of the threshold and of the average information propagation speed near the threshold, in case of finite or infinite radio propagation speed. Furthermore, we investigate in detail the way information propagates under the threshold, and we prove that delay tolerant routing using cars moving on both directions provides a gain in propagation distance, which is bounded by a sublinear power law with respect to the elapsed time, in the referential of the moving cars. Combining these results, we thus obtain a complete picture of the way information propagates in vehicular networks on roads and highways, which may help designing and evaluating appropriate vehicular ad hoc networks routing protocols. This article presents a full-wave propagation model for arbitrary profile of building blockage in mobile satellite communications, by solving the electric field integral equation for induced surface currents using the method of moments. Asymptotic expressions are used to simplify the integrals. Scattered fields are then found by the radiation equations derived from Maxwell equations. The total received fields around different profiles of buildings are calculated as a function of space, elevation angle and frequency. The results agree well with measurements and other published data. Various useful parameters for designing robust and reliable communication systems like frequency response, average fade duration and coherence bandwidth are found. Decode-and-forward relaying is a promising enhancement to existing radio access networks and is currently being standardized in 3GPP to be part of the LTE-Advanced release 10. Two inband operation modes of relay nodes are to be supported, namely Type 1 and Type 1b. Relay nodes promise to offer considerable gain for system capacity or coverage depending on the deployment prioritization. However, the performance of relays, as any other radio access point, significantly depends on the propagation characteristics of the deployment environment. Hence, in this paper, we investigate the performance of Type 1 and Type 1b inband relaying within the LTE-Advanced framework in different propagation scenarios in terms of both coverage extension capabilities and capacity enhancements. A comparison between Type 1 and Type 1b relay nodes is as well presented to study the effect of the relaying overhead on the system performance in inband relay node deployments. System level simulations show that Type 1 and Type 1b inband relay deployments offer low to very high gains depending on the deployment environment. The presence of (Non line of Sight) NLOS propagation paths has been considered the main drawback for localization schemes to estimate the position of a (Mobile User) MU in an indoor environment. This paper presents a comprehensive wireless localization system based on (Round-Trip Time) RTT measurements in an unmodified IEEE 802.11 wireless network. It overcomes the NLOS impairment by implementing the (Prior NLOS Measurements Correction) PNMC technique. At first, the RTT measurements are performed with a novel electronic circuit avoiding the need for time synchronization between wireless nodes. At second, the distance between the MU and each reference device is estimated by using a simple linear regression function that best relates the RTT to the distance in (Line of Sight) LOS. Assuming that LOS in an indoor environment is a simplification of reality hence, the PNMC technique is applied to correct the NLOS effect. At third, assuming known the position of the reference devices, a multilateration technique is implemented to obtain the MU position. Finally, the localization system coupled with measurements demonstrates that the system outperforms the conventional time-based indoor localization schemes without using any tracking technique such as Kalman filters or Bayesian methods. Inspired by recent promotions of wireless location services and applications, this paper develops a simple model for detecting a mobile caller location with low implementation complexity and promising accuracy. The model that is described in this paper employs the geometrical transformation method with single propagation delay measurement. Depending on the number of available surrounding base transceiver stations (BTS5), a set of the pseudodistances and pseudodistance differences is provided through the geometrical distances between the home and multiple foreign BTSs, which is called the geometrical transformation method. Accordingly, the mobile caller location can be detected using the circular location technique and the hyperbolic location technique. The major benefit of the proposed model is that during a call to detect the mobile caller's location, the use of geometrical transformation allows us to overcome the location handover problem. A forcing handover in a Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) network or a three-way soft handover in a Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) network, for example, occurs when detecting the location when a standard model that is based on the measurement of the propagation delay is utilized. Comparing the standard model with the proposed model, the former needs at least three propagation delays that were simultaneously measured from at least three BTSs, whereas the latter needs only a single propagation delay that was measured from the home BTS. Moreover, in the case where we do not have a priori information of a non-line-of-sight (NLOS) error, a deterministic parameter that is related to the propagation delay is defined. This parameter is shown as limited a priori information for calibrating the coarse resolution in the proposed location model, which is caused by the NLOS error. To have significant findings, we conduct a practical experiment in an urban environment based on a 1.8-GHz commercial cellular network. In the five-BTS case where the location error is less than 300 m, the probability of location error that the proposed model with a bit period of 1/2 achieved is greater than 0.85. Although the performance of the proposed location model does not satisfy the U.S. Federal Communications Commission Enhanced 911 (FCC E-911) requirements, it is a good solution for the deployment of wireless location services and applications. Tests for the wide-sense stationarity (WSS) of multivariate random processes are developed and applied to measured multiple-input--multiple-output (MIMO) radio channel responses. Evolutionary spectral density functions are used to estimate the time-dependent power spectral density, and analysis of variance procedures are applied to determine whether the first and second moments of the data series exhibit statistically significant changes over short intervals. It is found that while the assumption of WSS is met in 40%-70% of half-second intervals for a single element at the transmitter and receiver, only 2%-12% of intervals with two elements at the transmitter and receiver are jointly WSS; furthermore, the occurrence of non-WSS intervals is not dependent on the antenna separation. This paper presents the results of a measurement campaign conducted in the winter of 2002 around the city of Munich in southern Germany. The primary goal was to evaluate the link performance of the land mobile satellite channel at Ku-band and to characterize the temporal behavior of the channel to help in the evaluation of different fade mitigation techniques for future mobile satellite systems that aim at employing this frequency band. In this paper, the validity of Recommendation ITU-R P.1546 in a short-range terrestrial environment is analyzed. Its three versions (P.1546, P.1546-1, and P.1546-2) are compared against simple models and evaluated using measurement results that were obtained by utilizing the pilot signal of a commercial code-division multiple-access mobile telephone network. Measurement results show that P.1546-2, on average, underestimates the field strength by more than 10 dB for typical Australian rural areas. However, it improves the error standard deviation compared to previous versions. Propagation path losses affecting intervehicle communication (IVC) at 60 GHz are presented. In order to examine the radio-propagation characteristics in the IVC system, in the first stage of our investigation, we have carried out propagation tests between two vehicles communicating in a line-of-sight (LOS) situation at fixed positions on a smooth surface paved with asphalt, which is the normal communication condition. Furthermore, the non-LOS (NLOS) situation with up to three intermediate vehicles, which can cause an obstruction, has been conducted. To construct path-loss models in NLOS cases, the uniform theory of diffraction technique was applied to the calculation of waves propagating through the intermediate vehicles. The propagation path models were derived from the measured results. In the second stage, a path-loss prediction formula was derived by statistically processing the data that had been calculated using the propagation path model. The propagation tests between the vehicles in motion confirm that the path-loss prediction formula is very useful when the communicating vehicles are moving, and it is therefore suitable for designing the cells that form the IVC. A propagation model is needed to evaluate the performance of handover in mobile-communication systems. Generally, the received signal level from base stations (BSs) is calculated assuming path loss, and a lognormal (shadow)-fading model is used for evaluating intercell handover. The lognormal fading was assumed to be uncorrelated between cells. However, since the correlation between sectors is not clarified, an appropriate shadow-fading model to evaluate intersector handover has not yet been proposed. To obtain shadow-fading characteristics between neighboring sectors, the change in signal level and the direction of arrival of incoming waves at a BS must be clarified. This paper proposes a simple model of incoming waves to evaluate the performance of intersector handover. The validity of the proposed model is confirmed by comparing the difference between signal levels in BS sectors that are calculated using the proposed model and the measured power azimuth spectrum. This paper covers some of the work carried out in the planning of the Global System for Mobile Communication for Railway (GSM-R) of the tunnels on the new high-speed trains in Spain. Solutions based on distributed antenna systems have been tested by installing several 900-MHz transmitters inside and outside of a 4000-m tunnel and measuring the propagation indifferent conditions. The measurements have been used to model the effects of tunnel propagation, including curves, trains passing from the outside to the inside, and the effect of two trains passing inside the tunnel. All cases have been tested by comparing solutions using isofrequency and multifrequency distributed transmitters inside the tunnel. The improvements of signal-to-noise ratio and the reduction of the blocking effects of two trains passing have demonstrated the advantages of using isofrequency distributed antenna systems in tunnels. Finally, a complete propagation model combining both modal analysis and ray tracing has been applied to predict the propagation loss inside and outside these tunnels, and results have been compared with the measurements. This paper concerns the measurement-based comparison of urban microcellular mobile radio channel characteristics at 1.9 GHz and a higher frequency, i.e., 5.8 GHz, where future wireless systems could operate. Characteristics that are reported include transmission loss, root-mean-square delay spread, frequency correlation, and envelope fading statistics. Conclusions are drawn concerning whether significant differences in the performance of mobile radio links operating under the same signal-to-noise ratio conditions in the two bands would be expected in the area where the measurements were made. This paper examines the temporal variability in fixed reception of the ground-wave propagated DRM (Digital Radio Mondiale) signal. This field strength analysis in the medium wave band has been performed using the first Spanish DRM field trial. Several fixed reception points located along radial routes provided the field strength sample distributions in rural and suburban areas. Additionally a second measurement campaign was carried out in several dense and open areas of downtown Madrid. The maximum likelihood estimations and logarithmic functions were used to analyse the fit of the experimental data with theoretical statistical distributions. A deep analysis of the most important parameters of the distribution has been carried out in order to characterize the field strength behavior in the different reception situations. It has been taken into account the influence of environment, measurement time interval, distance to the transmitter and the presence of critical reception impairments. The most remark- able result of this study has shown that the time variability of the ground-wave medium wave DRM channel is well approximated by a Log Normal and also by a Nakagami process. The results of signal strength measurements and ray tracing model calculations of indoor propagation at 900 and 1800 MHz are presented. Corridors are being illuminated by ceiling mounted 2 dB gain omni antennas. The objectives of these experiments are to study behavior of the received signal strength at 900 and 1800 MHz in comparison of cell coverage, signal attenuation and variation through the line of sight (LOS) and non line of sight (NLOS) orientation of halls. It is shown that large fluctuations occur between average signal levels in LOS and NLOS case of propagation. It is also obtained that ray tracing model neglecting diffraction effects work better for LOS then NLOS, and requires detailed database information for better prediction. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper presents a ray-tube tracing method to simulate waves propagating in curved road tunnels from base stations for mobile communications. Ray tubes are traced by including multiple reflections in the curved tunnels and diffractions from wedges of the tunnel structures, together with the direct path. To verify this ray-tube tracing approach, field measurements of 900 MHz signals in two curved road tunnels from GSM base stations were performed for comparisons with the ray-tube tracing simulations. By tracing ray tubes reflected and diffracted from the curved structures of the tunnels, the effects of the curvature on wave propagations in large guiding structures can be evaluated. Good agreement between simulations and measurements has been obtained. A parametric study of the influence of the tunnel geometry and the signal frequency on the path loss is also presented by applying this ray-tube tracing method. Curved tunnels for different radii of curvature in the tunnel cross-section and horizontal plane and also lengths of the curved part are compared, together with rectangular tunnels. Simulations of the field distribution over the cross-section of the curved tunnel away from the transmitting antenna are demonstrated as well. The ray-tube tracing program can be applied to determine the deployment of the base-station antennas for improving signal coverage in tunnels, which may have curved structures. In this paper, we propose a new empirical formula for handover rate as a function of base stations separation, standard deviation of shadow fading, path loss exponent, averaging distance, and correlation distance. The handover initiation algorithm is based on averaged signal strength measurements using relative signal strength with hysteresis margin approach. We generate the data through computer simulations for the average number of handovers referred to as handover rate, for the practical range of path loss exponent and standard deviation of shadow fading. A heuristic sequential algorithm for fixed channel assignment in cellular mobile networks with nonuniform cells, i.e., cells of different sizes and shapes, is presented. The channel assignment is treated as a nonbinary constraints satisfaction problem. The algorithm uses both the co-channel and adjacent channel interference levels and the number of channel requirements per cell to define the corresponding sequence of assignment. This paper presents the results of the first Spanish field trial carried out to analyze a DRM (Digital Radio Mondiale) system in the medium-wave band. A 4-kW average power omni directional ground-wave experimental DRM transmission at a frequency of 1359 kHz was surveyed by means of a measurement vehicle for fixed and mobile reception. Several radial routes starting from the transmitter site provided rural and suburban behavior features of the system. Urban reception trials were performed in several dense and open streets of Madrid, within the expected coverage area. Field strength threshold values were determined for the tested transmission configurations and compared with the AM ground-wave ITU model predictions. Reliability versus distance from the transmitter is stated in this paper for different transmission configurations and the causes of dropouts for different reception conditions are explained. This paper presents a method which optimises the computation time of the predictions of radio coverage for microcellular systems, no matter what propagation model is used. The principle consists in reducing the number of application points of the propagation model in relation to the classic technique. The proposed method is based on a multiresolution analysis of measured signals carried out around 2 GHz, and on an electromagnetic analysis of the propagation environment. As a remedy to multipath fading in land mobile communication, adaptive antenna arrays combined with equalizers have been proposed. For hardware realization and adaptive algorithm development in order to alleviate fading by temporal and spatial processing, it is necessary to clarify the spatiotemporal characteristics of the propagation channel such as the delay time and direction of arrival of multipath waves. In a microcell using a low antenna-height base station, the spatiotemporal propagation characteristics are measured for line-of-sight and non-line-of-sight propagation at 3.35 GHz. Characteristics of these channels have been presented. With regard to non-line-of-sight propagation, the measured spatiotemporal characteristics are modeled and the angular spread and the delay spread of the arriving waves are quantitatively evaluated. This paper considers the propagation model in which the amplitude of the direct wave is kept constant and that of the indirect wave exhibits Rayleigh fluctuations in the line-of-sight and non-line-of-sight channels. The instantaneous received signal level distribution is examined by computer simulation and a fading simululator, with the equivalent received bandwidth (product of received bandwidth 2Δf and maximum path length difference ΔLmax) as the propagation parameter. It is seen that the equivalent received bandwidth is suited as a parameter to represent the instantaneous received signal level distribution. The instantaneous received signal level distributions derived by the computer simulation and the fading simulator agree well. Conventional narrow-band transmission corresponds to the case in which 2ΔfΔLmax is less than 10 MHz-m. Then, the fading depth is determined by the power ratio a between the direct wave and the indirect wave. Wide-band transmission corresponds to the case in which 2ΔfΔLmax is larger than 10-MHz-m. Then, the fading depth is determined by a and 2ΔfΔLmax, becoming less when those quantities are increased. When 2ΔfΔLmax is very large, the fading depth also depends on the number of arriving waves. Micro and pico cell planning strategies are adopted in personal communication systems (PCS) in order to increase their capacity. The usage of the upper UHF band in combination with greater bandwidth is already proposed by telecom engineers in order to achieve the promised service quality and data rates. These strategies are characterized by an increased number of cells in specific geographical areas with the corresponding operating base transceiving stations (BTS) located at relatively low heights above the street level. In this case, the cell planning procedure in linear streets under line-of-sight (LOS) conditions needs further study concerning the technical characteristics of the PCS. In this paper, the propagation characteristics of a DCS 1800 system are investigated on a theoretical and experimental basis in a specific geographical area (center of Patras City in Northern Pelloponesse). An improved RF propagation model is proposed in order to determine the propagation path losses occurring under certain multipath fading conditions. Understanding of indoor/outdoor multipath propagation structure is important in developing antifading techniques for high-speed digital radio access. That is clarified by measuring the direction of arrival (DOA), time of arrival (TOA), and relative power strength of incident waves. We propose a new algorithm to estimate these parameters in mobile communication environments. We have developed multipath propagation analysis equipment for applying the algorithm. The basic performances have been evaluated in an anechoic chamber. The paper presents an analysis of the multipath propagation characteristics of an intervehicle high-speed radio communication system using the ray-tracing method. A model of the millimeter-wave intervehicle propagation path accounting for vehicle traffic was developed and used to study the delay profile, while varying the distribution of the reception power and other multipath propagation characteristics. In the case of digital signal transmission between the vehicles, the probability density function of the carrier-to-noise power ratio (CNR) was determined and a theoretical analysis of the average bit error rate was performed by modeling the intervehicle propagation path using a Rice fading channel. By performing a numerical simulation, close relationships were established between the transmission power necessary to provide the required average bit error rate, the maximum transmission rate, the vehicle traffic, and the size of the antenna. A study of the improved signal propagation characteristics obtained by using diversity reception was also performed. The problem of electromagnetic wave propagation in a two-dimensional tunnel with an arbitrary bending angle is numerically analyzed by the FVTD method. The FVTD representations for the electromagnetic field in a lossy medium and the PML absorbing boundary condition are formulated and a procedure for the numerical analysis of the two-dimensional tunnel is provided. Next, as specific numerical examples, the electromagnetic propagation characteristics near the bend of tunnels with bending angles of 30°, 45°, and 60° are computed. It is confirmed that the results agree well with those of the model experiment using microwaves. Detailed numerical calculations are performed for the case in which the width of the tunnel is much larger than the wavelength. In a low-antenna-height line-of-sight (LOS) microcell, the delay spread characteristic strongly depends on the road shape, the location of the transmitting and receiving points, and so on. To analyze this propagation mechanism, it is necessary to deal with location-specific properties. This paper describes analyzed results for the multipath delay mechanism in a rectilinear street with intersections where both transmitting and receiving stations exist. Special focus is placed on reflection at LOS building walls and on diffraction at building corners at street intersections, and their effect as a factor creating multipath delay is investigated numerically. We show that waves created by their reflection and/or diffraction are significant multipath delays making a major contribution to delay spread in microcells. A typical back-propagation neural network (BPN) model is developed for modelling radio propagation for field strength prediction based on data measurements of propagation loss (in decibels) with terrain information taken in an urban area (Athens region) in the 900 MHz band. The feasibility of the BPN model is checked against the performance of a conventional semiempirical reference model. The performance of both models is quantified by statistical methods. In the area of mobile communications, there has been increasing demand and development for new technologies and services such as digitalization and personalization. With this as background, this paper studies the use of adaptive antenna technology for mobile communication. In the area of mobile communications, the adaptive antenna technology has been studied with a view to reducing the fading for reception by the mobile station. In the case of microcells and indoor communication for which an expanded use is anticipated, arrivals of multiple waves tram various directions are expected even for the base station so that the application of the adaptive antennas to the base stations is effective. In the case of high-speed data transmission such as wireless local wireless networks (LAN), further reduction of fading and interference is required. Also, the frequency sharing among different radio services is an area in which the adaptive antenna is useful. Introductions of dynamic control of the systems are expected for mobile communications in time, space, and frequency domains. The adaptive antenna is effective for control in space. To understand the propagation structure of the microcells with a tall and medium-height antenna in an urban area, the fundamental propagation parameters are found and the structural model of the propagation loss was constructed. The fundamental propagation parameters were obtained based on the multivariable analysis of the propagation data at 800 MHz measured m the Tokyo Metropolitan area. These parameters are the distance between the transmitter and receiver, the average building height between the transmitter and receiver, and the base-station height which have high correlation and regression coefficients with the propagation loss. The relationship of parameters obtained from the model is (20 - α) log(h) for the base-station height characteristics and (α - 20) log (H) for the building height characteristics if the distance characteristics are α log (d). The relationships of coefficients of the conventional estimation equation and the regression equation obtained by the measured data almost agreed with those of the model so that the validity of the model was confirmed. In this paper, propagation delay measurements were carried out in Tokyo (metropolitan urban area) where high rises and other buildings are concentrated on a plane and in Kofu (urban area adjacent to mountains) surrounded by tall mountains. The delay characteristics such as delay spread and wave numbers were found. The principal results obtained in these areas are as follows: (1) In a metropolitan urban area, i.e., Tokyo, (a) the average delay spread in a high-density residential district is less than about 1 µs and the delay profile consists of a group of direct waves arriving directly from the base station; and (b) the average delay spread in a location with high-rise buildings is also less than 1 µs and the average number of arriving waves is about five with the delay profile consisting of a direct wave group and a reflected wave group from reflecting object. (2) In an urban area adjacent to mountains, i.e., Kofu, the average delay spread is less than about 2 µs and the average number of arriving waves is four. The delay profile consists of a direct wave group and a reflected wave group. The level of the reflected wave group decreases exponentially with the delay time in the case of reflection from buildings, while the level is almost constant within a certain range of delay time and is of a spread shape (rectangular) in the case of reflection from mountains. From these measured results, a simple propagation model consisting of a direct wave group and a reflected wave group is proposed. A propagation study has been conducted for horizontal and vertical polarization inside buildings in residential areas and in business districts with tail buildings. The following findings have been obtained: (i) when half-wave dipole antennas are used both for transmission and reception, the received power is stronger for transmission and reception in the vertical polarization than for transmission and reception in the horizontal polarization. This phenomenon is due to the difference of the directivity of the dipole antenna: (ii) the cross polarization discrimination (XPD), defined as the ratio of the in-phase polarization component voltage to that of the orthogonal polarization, correlates with the loss increase from the free space propagation. As the latter is increased, the XPD degrades more; (iii) the XPD degrades more as the propagation distance increases. This is because the attenuation constant of the in-phase polarization component is larger than that of the orthogonal polarization component; (iv) the XPD of the wave propagation outside is determined by the ratio of the RG wave guided along a road to the BD wav diffracted by the top edge of a building. It degrades more as the BD wave component is increased; and (v) for a distance of less than about 1 km line-of-sight, the difference in attenuation by the polarization is negligible.
