The COVID-19 pandemic, negatively affecting the achievement of most of the Sustainable Development Goals, is leading to a significant crisis, especially in less developed economies, and poses serious challenges to governments around the world. Negative annual GDP growth per capita in Azerbaijan in 2020 amounted to -4.95% (below the world average of 0.56%), necessitating the resumption of short-term economic growth and achieving long-term competitiveness, sustainable development, and inclusive economy. Azerbaijan's positions in these areas, namely 58th place out of 141 countries in the global competitiveness ranking (63rd place for innovation potential and 73rd place for ICT implementation), 55th place out of 165 countries in the Sustainable Development Index, 80th place out of 131 countries according to the Global Innovation Index testify to the important role of innovation management in Azerbaijan. The article's main purpose is to study the relationship between innovation development, competitiveness, and sustainable development of the country. To empirically confirm the hypotheses, a sample of 9 countries (Azerbaijan, Georgia, Armenia, Germany, France, Finland, Estonia, Poland, Czech Republic) was formed. Several indicators were analysed based on data from the statistical department of the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs, the World Bank, the World Economic Forum, and the World Intellectual Property Organization from 2010 to 2020. Statistical analysis of indicators of sustainable development, competitiveness, and innovative development of the studied countries. With the help of correlation-regression analysis and the Granger test (using the STATA software package), the mutual directions of influence of indicators of innovative development, the competitiveness of the country, and sustainable development in Azerbaijan and other sample countries were established. A regression model with random effects was built. The impact of the parameters of innovative development on the annual GDP growth per capita as a key component of the country's competitiveness and its sustainable development was formalized and assessed. The obtained results could be useful in developing measures to increase competitiveness and achieve sustainable development goals in Azerbaijan and further research. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

SMALL business , *OPEN innovation , *MARKET orientation , *CUSTOMER satisfaction , *INFLUENCER marketing - Abstract
The purpose of this study is to identify how open innovation variables influence the competitive capability of manufacturing small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in a regional territory in Southern Brazil. The research method is a survey of 67 SMEs in Southern Brazil that provided data for an ordinary least squares (OLS) regression model encompassing seven innovation variables and five competitiveness constructs. The results indicate that most innovation initiatives have a low impact on creating a competitive edge in the surveyed companies. The most remarkable positive impacts are (i) technology trends influencing the shop floor productivity, (ii) flexibility influencing internal aspects, and (iii) customer satisfaction and innovative ideas and customized supplies influencing the market orientation. The study also reports that innovation processes are not safe from failures. Some ill-defined innovation initiatives may jeopardize the competitive edge. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

NEW product development , *BALANCED scorecard , *INNOVATION management , *STRATEGIC planning , *BUSINESS enterprises , *ECONOMIC development , *ORGANIZATIONAL growth , *PROFITABILITY - Abstract
A study was carried out whose objective was to propose a tool to measure and evaluate the development process of new products, based on theoretical foundations such as State-Gate and Balanced Scorecard. For its construction, 4 phases were followed, the first consisted of a review of key concepts, and the second was developed through a bibliometric study, the third focused on an analysis of the business context and the fourth on the development of the tool measurement, constituting the theoretical contribution of the investigation. Thus, with the union of both tools, the Balanced Scorecard was created for the process of developing new products, as a proposal to follow this important issue, and strategic objectives were established for each stage, accompanied by indicators that will allow measuring the status of each objective and if not met, it will not be possible to advance to the next stage; this tool also raised five doors with their respective activities: definition of ideas, construction of focus, development, testing and validation; and finally launch and publish the revision of the version. This concludes that the development of new products accompanied by the management of innovation is essential for companies to grow and generate profitability, also to promote employment and promote the country's competitiveness, promoting economic development; This is possible when there are strategic planning tools available that allow to carry out the functions of planning, organization, direction and control in an effective way. Technological entrepreneurship concerns the transformation of potentially viable technological opportunities into profitable businesses. Technological entrepreneurship is recognised as a key driver of successful technological innovation. In addition, matching technological opportunities with local market needs is a characteristic feature of Chinese technology firms' catch-up and innovation potential. However, extant research on technology and innovation management has yet to fully include entrepreneurship insights in the study of innovation, especially in Chinese firms. With this aim, the paper identifies and investigates the relationships between a number of internal and external factors and technological entrepreneurship. Using a multi-disciplinary and multi-level literature review and findings collected through case studies and interviews in 74 Guangdong technology firms, the paper presents possible explanations concerning the relationship explored and discusses their theoretical and practical relevance, with particular reference to the role of support policies, IPR enforcement and personal relationships. SUPPLY chains , *COMPETITIVE advantage in business , *STRATEGIC planning , *INTERORGANIZATIONAL relations - Abstract
This research explores supply chain competitiveness and dynamic capabilities. It examines a pilot group of Australian supply chain organisations to understand the importance of dynamic capability in building innovation capacity for competitive advantage, and the concept of adopting a strategic approach to supply chain relationship building. A supply chain is after all a group of intra and interorganisational relationships delivering demand to end-users. This exploratory study confirms a positive relationship between the variables indicating both a strategic intent to develop relational capability, and very strong predictive linkages between the importance placed on developing supply chain dynamic capability and achieving supply chain innovation capacity as a competitive advantage. TECHNOLOGICAL innovations , *ECONOMIC competition , *CREATIVE ability , *ADOPTION of ideas - Abstract
Innovation is widely recognised as an appropriate 'tool' to gain competitiveness and it is often defined as an idea, process, service, product, etc., that is characterised as being new and commercially accepted. The description of the innovation process as a sequence of tasks is not new; but there is still no easy way to materialise these processes in the industry. Various authors have defined modelling as the most appropriate way to achieve this purpose. This paper compiles and summarises all of the most relevant models published during the last three decades. It also identifies their key factors, which are included in a questionnaire that will be used amongst relevant industrial firms in the Basque country in order to characterise a new innovation model. The originality of this work will be the joint development and validation of a new innovation model, suited to actual needs, flexible and customised to industrial companies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

NATURAL resources , *ENVIRONMENTAL policy , *ENVIRONMENTALISM , *ENVIRONMENTAL protection , *INNOVATION management , *KNOWLEDGE management , *COMMUNITY development , *STRATEGIC planning - Abstract
Natural resources and physical cultural resources, referred to in this paper as "Environmental Resources", can be important assets for regional competitiveness and innovation. In recent years, these types of assets have been increasingly taken into consideration in the design and implementation of regional development strategies, as a consequence of their potential role as a source of differentiation and of new competitive advantages. However, in contrast to environmental policies, which usually focus on the protection of the environment, innovation policies and their instruments are largely shaped by, and geared towards, knowledge-based innovation. In this paper, we discuss the role played by environmental resources in the context of regional innovation policies. We begin by discussing the relationship between environmental resources and regional development, and by emphasizing some contrasting views with regard to the function of environmental resources in regional development. Then, we address the relationship between regional competitive advantages and innovation strategies. The specific issues and problems that arise whenever the aim is to attain competitive advantages through the valorisation of environmental resources constitute the core of section III. In that section, we highlight the specific characteristics of environmental resources and we discuss the applicability of the "natural resource curse" argument to the dynamics based on the valorisation of environmental resources. The reasons that justify public intervention as well as the difficulties concerning the adequate level of intervention (local / regional / national) are also examined. The paper ends with some conclusions and policy implications. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Sustainable growth and technological development are achievable. This is possible when there is good governance striving for a vibrant entrepreneurship, with innovation at its very centre. In this regard, North African countries' records are strikingly lagging. Progress has been made, but remains far from expectations and potentialities. As globalisation has now pushed innovation to the top of the development agenda, new policies and strategies are needed. Successful integration into the world business requires innovation-based growth using all qualified people and initiatives. In these countries, competencies and creative forces do exist, but their effective utilisation requires greatest attention. As little is written about the issue, this paper aims at discussing obstacles of innovation in the countries in question and proposes some feasible solutions. The paper will draw from published and unpublished work and make reference of some factual records. Policy implications will be identified and specific actions will be proposed. Innovation is an important topic in the 21st century. Innovation management has become a compulsory path to sustained enterprise growth. In this research, we studied the degree of innovation implementation among domestic high-tech manufacturers and the impact of innovation management implementation on competitiveness. We considered the mediating variables of ''industry type'' and ''enterprise scale'', developed a theoretical model of impact relationship, and conducted the empirical analysis of Taiwan's high-tech manufacturers. We found from the research results that the degree of innovation management implementation has a significant impact on competitiveness. The degree of innovation management implementation has an essential impact on the two competitiveness dimensions including technological innovation and differentiation. Moreover, the two mediating variables of ''industry type'' and ''enterprise scale'' were proven to have a significant impact on the degree of innovation management and competitiveness. SOCIAL responsibility of business , *ENVIRONMENTAL management , *MULTIPLE regression analysis , *SMALL business , *INNOVATION management - Abstract
Our paper aims to analyze the role played by corporate social responsibility in boosting the responsible innovation and the competitiveness of North African small and medium-sized enterprises by focusing on the commitments toward internal and external stakeholders as well as environmental management. In our study, we used a multiple regression analysis applied to a sample of 131 SMEs from North Africa. Our results showed that the mediating effects of responsible innovation in the relationship between corporate social responsibility, environmental management and the competitiveness of small and medium-sized enterprises are driven by the inclusion of the stakeholders in the innovation process, the anticipation of the future trends in terms of socially responsible innovation, and responsiveness to potential risks. The originality of this paper lies in the choice of the field of application of the study, which is corporate social responsibility in the case of developing countries and the attempt to formulate a sustainable development model based on responsible innovation in the case of small and medium-sized enterprises. • A model of CSR-based competitiveness for SMEs was developed. • The mediating role of responsible innovation in the CSR-based competitiveness model has been tested. • CSR towards internal and external stakeholders and environmental management have a positive impact on SME competitiveness. • Responsible innovation plays a mediating role between CSR and SME competitiveness. • The dimensions of responsible innovation playing this mediating role have been identified.
