This paper describes radio frequency identification (RFID) projects, designed and implemented by students in the College of Engineering at the University of North Texas, as part of their senior-design project requirement. The paper also describes an RFID-based project implemented at Rice Middle School in Piano, TX, which went on to win multiple prizes both at the school and regional level. The goal of the RFID endeavor is to develop an RFID elective course that is current, industry-oriented, and methodically built to enable faculty to design, develop, and deliver the course to a diverse group of engineering students. The sequence of events through which the course evolved was as follows: 1) conduct an industry-supported workshop for students in the College of Engineering with funding received from the National Science Foundation (NSF); 2) assign an RFID-based design project for the senior students who attended the workshop; 3) use the first senior design project as a model to encourage subsequent senior students to create their own RFID projects or enable the students to contact companies seeking to accomplish RFID solutions to a problem; 4) involve middle school students in RFID-based projects by using the senior design projects as an enticement; 5) use the successful projects as the basis for practical laboratory experiences to be created in a new elective course on RFID. Information about several papers discusses at the 18th International Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care Symposium held on September 8-12, 2012 in San Antonio, Texas on diagnostics in emergency and critical care is presented. A conference specific to the education and training of clinical neuropsychology was held in 1997, which led to a report published in the Archives of Clinical Neuropsychology (Hannay, J., Bieliauskas, L., Crosson, B., Hammeke, T., Hamsher, K., & Koffler, S. (1998). Proceedings of the Houston Conference on Specialty Education and Training in Clinical Neuropsychology. Archives of Clinical Neuropsychology, 13, 157–250.). The guidelines produced by this conference have been referred to as the Houston Conference (HC) guidelines. Since that time, there has been considerable discussion, and some disagreement, about whether the HC guidelines produced a positive outcome in the training of neuropsychologists. To explore this question and determine how widely the HC guidelines were implemented, a meeting was held in 2006. Present and past leaders of the American Psychological Association Division 40 (Clinical Neuropsychology), the National Academy of Neuropsychology, and the Association of Postdoctoral Programs in Clinical Neuropsychology met to discuss the possible need for an Inter-Organizational Summit on Education and Training (ISET). A decision was reached to have the ISET Steering Committee conduct a survey of clinical neuropsychologists that could address the extent to which HC guidelines were present in the specialty and whether the influence of the HC guidelines was positive. An online survey was constructed, with data gathered in 2010. The current paper presents and discusses the ISET survey results. Specific findings need to be viewed cautiously due to the relatively low response rate. However, with some direct parallels to a larger recent survey of clinical neuropsychologists, the following general conclusions appear well founded: (a) the demographics of respondents in the ISET survey are comparable with a recent larger professional practice survey and thus may reasonably represent the specialty; (b) the HC guidelines appear to have been widely adopted by training programs, in that a large proportion of younger practitioners endorsed having had HC-adherent training; and (c) HC-adherent training is associated with a higher frequency endorsement of being well prepared to engage in key professional activities subsequent to the completion of training when compared with those not having HC-adherent training. Overall, the ISET Steering Committee has concluded that the HC guidelines have been widely adopted and that trainees associate participation in HC-adherent training as advantageous. A potential revision based on unfavorable outcomes is deemed unnecessary. Nonetheless, the ISET Steering Committee recognizes that training needs change as a function of the broadening of our field and the introduction of related new technologies, which may prompt updates. Information about the 42nd Biennial American Cytogenetics Conference (ACC) held from April 19 to 22, 2012 in San Antonio, Texas is presented. Physician and scientist Janet Davidson Rowley was recognized as the 2012 Recipient ACC Distinguished Cytogeneticist. Among the papers presented were "The Impact of Chromosomal Microarray on Clinical Management," and "Utility of SNP Arrays in Detecting, Quantifying, and Determining Meiotic Origin of Tetrasomy 12p in Blood from Pallister-Killian Patients."

This article focuses on the 2004 IEEE Microwave Theory and Techniques Society (IEEE MTT-S) International Microwave Symposium (IMS), which was held during 6-11 June 2004, in Fort Worth, Texas. 970 papers were originally submitted to the IEEE MTT-S IMS Technical Program Committee in December 2003 for possible presentation at the symposium in June 2004. Of those papers, 488 were accepted at the IEEE MTT-S IMS. Each of authors was then invited to expand their papers. 126 expanded papers were submitted and of these 65 papers have been accepted for publication. Of these, 22 were published in the November 2004 issue of the journal "IEEE Transactions on Microwave Theory and Techniques."

Information about several papers discussed at the American Society for Nondestructive Testing (ASNT) conference at Houston is presented. This paper offers a look at award presentations at the 2004 Popular Culture Association (PCA) conference in San Antonio, Texas. At the business meetings of the organization, John E. O'Connor and Peter Rollins were presented the Ray and Pat Browne Award for their book Hollywood's White House: The American Presidency as Television Drama. O'Connor and Rollins were given a table outside the official reception by PCA to autography copies of the book for members of the organization. That same evening a new--now to be annual--award named for Rollins was presented for the best documentary film of the year to Jeff Krulick, an innovative filmmaker with a unique vision. A ninety-minute session was dedicated to honoring Rollins for his contributions to the organizations as an officer, as the director of development for many years and for efforts to communicate with a general audience. Michael T. Marsden, one of the founders of the PCA reminded the assembled of Rollins' work outside of the organization as a public intellectual in regard to Vietnam issues and Vietnam veterans. Michael K. Schoenecke of Texas Tech University discussed the work of Rollins with graduate students, a task which is a reward unto itself. The Southwest PCA delivered a surprise award to Rollins as founder and now emeritus counselor to the organization.
