A kind of low cost, high breakage resistance ceramic proppant special for exploitation of the coal‐bed methane is successfully produced. The producing conditions are optimized through orthogonal experimental design method. The breakage resistance results of the orthogonal analyses show the best condition of this kind of ceramic proppant is A4B3C3D2, which means sintering temperature of 1350 °C, manganese mineral powder content of 5 wt.%, weight ratio of 75/25 (second grade bauxite to mujie clay), and holding time of 3 h. The ceramic proppants under this very condition of A4B3C3D2 are then prepared and their phase structure and microstructure are characterized subsequently. X‐ray diffraction pattern exhibits that mullite and corundum are the main crystallographic phases. Scanning electron microscopy illustrates the A4B3C3D2 sample is with non‐porous morphology and small amount of corundum grains and liquid phase, which play the role of improving strength. It reveals the orthogonal experimental design is a feasible optimization method and the ceramic proppant made under the condition of A4B3C3D2 is a promising material for exploiting the coal‐bed methane resources. The conditions for preparation of a kind of low cost, high‐breakage‐resistance ceramic proppant were optimized through orthogonal experimental design method. Nearly all the grains show a uniformly acicular morphology that represents the mullite grains, which intertwine around each other, but apparent pores are also formed. While a small amount of liquid phase can be observed, and few apparent pores can be seen. Bulk Ti65Fe35 and (Ti65Fe35)96.15-xSn3.85Nbx (x = 0, 3, 5 and 7 at.%) alloys were prepared by cold crucible levitation melting, and tested in compression at room temperature. The Sn and Nb modified hypereutectic Ti-Fe alloys exhibited improved mechanical properties under compression. (Ti65Fe35)93.15Sn3.85Nb3 alloy displayed an ultimate compressive strength of 2.7 GPa and a compressive plastic strain of 15%. Electron microscope observations revealed Ti-Fe(Sn,Nb) alloys having a bimodal microstructure with micrometer-scale primary TiFe dendrites distributed in an ultrafine eutectic (β-Ti+TiFe) matrix. The orientation relationship of β-Ti with TiFe phases is TiFe (011)[100] ∥ β-Ti (011)[100]. The improved mechanical properties are attributed to the morphology of the phase constituents and the larger lattice mismatches between β-Ti and TiFe phases due to the additions of Sn and Nb. The spinal cord is a vital link between the brain and the body and mainly comprises neurons, glial cells and nerve fibres. In this work, nonlinear optical (NLO) microscopy based on intrinsic tissue properties was employed to label-freely analyze the cells and matrix in spinal cords at a molecular level. The high-resolution and high-contrast NLO images of unstained spinal cords demonstrate that NLO microscopy has the ability to show the microstructure of white and grey matter including ventral horn, intermediate area, dorsal horns, ventral column, lateral column and dorsal column. Neurons with various sizes were identified in grey matter by dark spots of nonfluorescent nuclei encircled by cytoplasm-emitting two-photon excited fluorescence signals. Nerve fibres and neuroglias were observed in white matter. Besides, the spinal arteries were clearly presented by NLO microscopy. Using spectral and morphological information, this technique was proved to be an effective tool for label-freely imaging spinal cord tissues, based on endogenous signals in biological tissue. This work reports the oxidation and crack healing behavior of a fine-grained (~2 μm) Cr2 AlC MAX phase ceramic. The oxidation behavior was investigated in the temperature range 900°C-1200°C for times up to 100 h. The material showed a good oxidation resistance, owing to the formation of a dense and thin α- Al2 O3 layer. The microstructure, composition and thickness of the oxide scale were characterized. Its oxidative crack healing behavior as a function of temperature, healing time, and initial crack size was studied systematically. The material showed excellent healing behavior. The main crack healing mechanism is the filling of the crack by oxides well adhering to the crack faces. The crack geometry before and after healing was characterized by X-ray tomography. Three-point bend tests showed the dependence of strength recovery at 1100°C as a function of initial crack length and healing time. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Using spark plasma sintering, Ti3 AlC2/ W composites were prepared at 1300°C. They contained 'core-shell' microstructures in which a Ti xW1− x 'shell' surrounded a W 'core', in a Ti3 AlC2 matrix. The composite hardness increased with W addition, and the hardening effect is likely achieved by the Ti x W1− x interfacial layer providing strong bonding between Ti3 AlC2 and W, and by the presence of hard W. Microstructural development during high-temperature oxidation of Ti3 AlC2/ W composites involves α- Al2 O3 and rutile ( TiO2) formation ≥1000°C and Al2 TiO5 formation at ~1400°C while tungsten oxides appear to have volatilized above 800°C. Likely due to exaggerated, secondary grain growth of TiO2-doped alumina and the effect of W addition, fine (<1 μm) Al2 O3 grains formed dense, anisomorphic laths on Ti3 AlC2/5 wt% W surfaces ≥1200°C and coarsened to large (>5 μm), dense, TiO2-doped Al2 O3 clusters on Ti3 AlC2/10 wt% W surfaces ≥1400°C. W potentially affects the oxidation behavior of Ti3 AlC2/ W composites beneficially by causing formation of Ti x W1− x thus altering the defect structure of Ti3 AlC2, resulting in Al having a higher activity and by changing the scale morphology by forming dense Al2 O3 laths in a thinner oxide coating, and detrimentally through release of volatile tungsten oxides generating cavities in the oxide scale. For Ti3 AlC2/5 wt% W oxidation, the former beneficial effects appear to dominate over the latter detrimental effect. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
