A full-flow ball penetrometer is now routinely used in centrifuge testing for characterizing single-layer clay, silt, sand, and stratified soil samples. The behavior of the standard ball penetrometer (including the shaft) used in the field, penetrating through single and two-layer uniform clays, has recently been investigated. However, the ball penetrometers used in centrifuge testing has either a similar or higher area ratio (of the shaft to the ball) and significantly greater equivalent prototype diameter compared with the standard one used in the field. The thickness of the soil layers, however, are scaled accurately mimicking strength profiles in the field, leading to lower relative thickness of the soil layers. Large deformation finite element (LDFE) analyses were, therefore, carried out for the centrifuge ball penetrometers to investigate its performance in characterization of single- and double-layer clays. The results were validated against plasticity solutions and other previously published finite element (FE) results prior to undertaking a detailed parametric study, exploring a range of normalized soil properties and layer thickness. Three commonly used centrifuge balls were studied. For single-layer uniform clay, the area ratio of shaft to ball was shown to have significant influence on the deep bearing factors and the critical penetration depth of attaining that factor. For two-layer uniform clays, the undrained shear strength of the top layer was mostly underestimated because of the lower thickness of that layer relative to the centrifuge ball diameter. In addition, the shear strength of the bottom layer was mostly overestimated because of trapping of stiff clay at the base of the ball, advancing in stiff-over-soft clay deposits. To interpret a reference undrained strength profile, taking into account the scale effects of the penetrometer relative to layer thickness, a framework has been proposed accounting for these effects, with the LDFE data used to calibrate the framework. This paper focuses on nonlinear creep behavior with a consecutively decreasing creep coefficient Cae fully related to the soil density. Conventional oedometer tests on reconstituted samples of several natural soft clays are selected to clarify the evolution of creep coefficient throughout testing. On this basis, a simple nonlinear creep formulation is proposed accounting for the effect of volumetric packing of soil assemblies. The formulation is then incorporated into a newly developed elastic-viscoplastic model to take into account the nonlinear creep of natural soft clays. One additional parameter is added that can be determined in a straightforward way from an oedometer test without additional experimental cost. The enhanced nonlinear creep model is examined by simulating a conventional oedometer test on reconstituted Haarajoki clay. The improvement of predictions by the nonlinear creep formulation is highlighted by comparing predictions with constant Cae. The enhanced model is further applied to Murro test embankment. Ground movements observed during foundation installation and basement construction of a residential 53-story RC tower are presented. The One Museum Park West building is located in Chicago, Illinois, and was developed using a combination of bottom-up methods, used for the construction of a central concrete core of the building, and top-down methods to build five levels of basements. The excavation extended 13-15 m below grade and was made through soft to medium-stiff clays. The building was supported by drilled shafts and a perimeter wall formed by secant piles that transitioned to tangent piles below the bottom of the cut. The system was laterally braced with RC floor slabs structurally connected to the secant pile walls and the RC core. Field performance data were collected by means of settlement points and inclinometers located close to the walls on two sides of the excavation. The construction sequence and attendant ground movements during each main activity are summarized. As much as 160 mm of settlement was recorded in the adjacent streets throughout construction. Wall and foundation installation accounted for approximately 35% of the total settlements during construction, whereas top-down construction of the basement resulted in approximately 40% of the total settlements. This paper presents the results of an experimental study of the influence of clay content (CC) on liquefaction of seabed beneath progressive waves. Experiments were, for the most part, conducted with silt and silt-clay mixtures; in supplementary tests, sand-clay mixtures were used. Two types of measurements were carried out: (1) pore-water pressure measurements across the soil depth and (2) water-surface elevation measurements. These measurements were synchronized with video recordings of the liquefaction process from the side. The ranges of the various quantities in the experiments were wave height , wave period , and water depth . The experiments showed that the influence of CC on wave-induced liquefaction is very significant. Susceptibility of silt to liquefaction was increased with increasing CC up to (which is clay-specific), beyond which the mixture of silt and clay was not liquefied. Sand may become prone to liquefaction with the introduction of clay, contrary to the general perception that this type of sediment is normally liquefaction-resistant under waves. For instance, sand with was liquefied with , whereas sand with was partially liquefied with CC as small as 2.9%. Because of its large size ( in plan), the 17.85- to 25.89-m-deep foundation pit of the 492-m-high Shanghai World Finance Center building was excavated by the central-island technique, i.e., bottom-up construction of the central cylindrical shaft first and then top-down construction of the peripheral rectangular pit. As part of the comprehensive study on the characteristics of this large-scale foundation pit, this study mainly focuses on the behaviors of the peripheral pit via the following investigated items: (1) lateral wall deflections; (2) vertical wall movements; (3) lateral ground movements; (4) axial forces in the cast floor slabs and braced struts; (5) lateral earth pressures on both sides of retaining walls; (6) variation of pore pressures along depth and deep artesian water levels; (7) ground settlements; (8) subsurface settlements; (9) basal heaves; (10) vertical column movements; and (11) column stresses. To explore the potential effects of pit sizes on the excavation behaviors, field data from another 33 top-down excavations in Shanghai were also included for comparison. The comprehensive comparisons show that in addition to the well-known factors (e.g., excavation depths, supporting system stiffness, and factor of safety against basal heave), pit sizes in plan played a key role in determination of the pit behaviors. The large-scale pits with the areas in plan of experienced wall deflections and ground settlements three to five times those of regular building basement and metro station excavations with the sizes in plan no more than , and the corresponding influence zones behind the large-sized pits were also much wider. Different from the braced struts that just carried the load because of soil removal in the proximity, the floor slabs sustained the load induced by exposure of the entire retaining wall along the depth. For the top-down excavations in Shanghai soft clay, the lateral earth pressure envelopes behind the retaining walls were trapezoidal, but their magnitudes were significantly smaller than those predicted by the methods available in the literature, and the corresponding peak values occurred at a greater depth. The influence zones of basal heave caused by soil removal (stress relief) extended much deeper below the excavation bases than those assumed in the conventional slip circle basal stability models. A large amount of field and experimental data has been devoted to rectangular excavations thus far. In contrast, very few data were available for cylindrical excavations, especially those with large diameters in thick soft clay deposits. Via a comprehensive instrumentation program on a unpropped (self-supported) cylindrical excavation constructed by the bottom-up method in Shanghai soft clay, the characteristics of this large-sized circular excavation were extensively investigated. This cylindrical shaft was a part of a large-scale deep foundation pit excavated by the central-island technique. The investigated items included (1) lateral wall deflections, (2) vertical wall movements, (3) lateral ground movements, (4) ground settlements, (5) subsurface settlements, (6) basal heaves, (7) vertical column movements, (8) column stresses, and (9) variation of pore pressures along depth and artesian water levels. Analysis of the field data indicates that discharging of the deep artesian water was one of the key factors affecting the excavation behaviors. The influence zone of basal heave caused by soil removal (stress relief) reached very deep soil layers, far beyond the depths reported in literature. Column movement and stress were shown to be reliable indicators of the relative movement between basal soils, diaphragm walls, and interior columns. Finally, the comparisons of this study with other bottom-up excavations in Shanghai, including 11 cylindrical excavations, 92 building basement excavations, and eight metro station excavations, demonstrate that self-supported (unpropped) cylindrical excavations had much stronger capabilities of resisting deformation than both multipropped regular basement excavations (in terms of deformation magnitudes) and long and narrow metro station excavations (in terms of scale of influence zones). For cylindrical shafts, their diameters, and not wall penetration ratios, played a dominant role in the determination of excavation behaviors. The stress-strain behavior of clayey soil is time dependent. Laboratory study and constitutive modeling of the time-dependent stress-strain behavior are needed to understand the soil behavior and analyze displacements of reclamation works and foundations on clayey soils. The stress relaxation, as one of the significant time-dependent phenomena in clayey soils, has been observed and examined in excavations and constructions, such as the short-term change in lateral earth pressure after installation of a supporting system. In this study, Hong Kong marine deposits (HKMDs), which are clayey soils, and a sand-mixed bentonite (SMB) soil were investigated in relaxation tests. Relaxations were performed in both the loading stage and the unloading stage. This paper is focused on the testing study and modeling of the time-dependent relaxation behavior of clayey soils. Relaxation tests were carried out to measure the changes of the effective stress with time in one-dimensional (1D) straining condition. A new 1D elastic visco-plastic model considering swelling (1D EVPS) was used to simulate the relaxation tests. Analytical solutions from the 1D EVPS constitutive equations were obtained for relaxation tests. All parameters in this 1D EVPS model were obtained from a conventional oedometer test. The analytical solutions from the 1D EVPS model were used to simulate the relaxation behavior and compare with test data. Good agreement between the simulated curve and the measured data were found. This paper presents numerical models and mathematical formulations to predict the pullout capacity of anchor plates with different inclination angles embedded in clay. The models were developed based on the failure mechanism deduced from laboratory testing and utilize the Mohr-Coulomb yielding criteria. Expression was given to estimate the maximum pullout resistance of plates with different dimensions and inclination angles embedded in various clayey soils. A comparison between results of finite-element analyses has been performed to find out the effect of different parameters. New two-variable functions have been presented to show the relationship between pullout resistance and embedment ratio with different inclination angles. In addition, an interesting relationship among pullout capacities of anchor plates at different inclination angles was found, and a new concept, ellipse of pullout capacity, has been pronounced. Finally, a new theory has been introduced to predict the pullout capacity of any anchor plates with different inclination angles and various depths, without any computer analysis and just by using the new proposed theory. Calcium carbide residue (CCR) is a waste product from acetylene gas factories, which is rich in calcium hydroxide []. Because clayey soils contain high amount of natural pozzolanic materials (silica and alumina), CCR can be used as a soil stabilizer. This article presents the engineering properties of CCR-stabilized silty clay to ascertain its performance in pavement base and subbase applications. The input of CCR, which reduces the plasticity index of the clay, increases the optimum water content (OWC) and decreases the maximum dry unit weight () of the stabilized clay. The CCR fixation point, simply obtained from the index test, is proved as a practical indicator for determining the CCR content to obtain the required engineering properties at a particular molding water content. The state of water content controls the densification, chemical reaction, and water absorption capacity. The soaked engineering properties are thus dependent upon the state of water content. For a particular CCR content, the optimum water content is the most appropriate in terms of strength, swelling and collapse behaviors, and bearing capacity. The lower water content is not sufficient for the chemical reaction, while the higher water content yields a higher water/binder ratio. The water absorption is smallest for the CCR-stabilized samples compacted at the OWC. To conclude, the optimal mix proportion is the CCR fixation point at OWC. Contamination of soils by polychlorobiphenyls (PCBs) is of environmental concern because of their toxicity, persistence, hydrophobic nature, and slow biodegradation potential. Among the PCB remedial technologies, direct oxidation by persulfate is considered to have great potential to be both simple and rapid. However, to produce faster reaction rates, persulfate is often activated using heat, metal chelates, hydrogen peroxide, or high pH. Furthermore, delivery of persulfate in low permeability clayey soils is difficult. Integrating electrokinetic remediation with persulfate has the potential to overcome such difficulties because the applied electric potential can facilitate the delivery of persulfate in low permeability soils as well as activate oxidizing radicals and simultaneously induce oxidative/reductive reactions directly in the soil. This study investigates the potential for in situ oxidation of PCBs in low permeability soils using persulfate as an oxidant and also evaluates the benefits of integrating oxidation with electrokinetic remediation. Several series of laboratory batch and bench-scale electrokinetic experiments were conducted using kaolin, a representative clayey soil, spiked with 50 mg/kg of 2,2′,3,5′ tetrachlorobiphenyl (PCB 44), a representative PCB. Persulfate oxidation activators [elevated temperature (45°C) and high pH (at the cathode)] were investigated to maximize the PCB degradation. In addition, the effect of oxidant dosage on PCB degradation was investigated. The electrokinetically enhanced temperature-only activated persulfate oxidation test resulted in better PCB 44 remediation (77.9%) than the temperature and high-pH activated persulfate oxidation (76.2%) in a 7-day period. The optimal dosage for effective remediation was 30% Na-persulfate (76.2%) because a 20% concentration of the oxidant yielded a lower rate of degradation (55.2%) of PCB 44. Rapid load pile testing (RLT) techniques such as Statnamic were developed as an alternative to more frequently adopted static and dynamic tests. The existing unloading point method (UPM) for deriving equivalent static load-settlement behavior from rapid load tests seems to be adequate in coarse-grained soils but may result in poor prediction in clays and silts. To address these shortcomings, the UPM has been improved to reflect soil type, and new analysis techniques have been developed. To test the performance of the improved UPM and new analysis techniques, pile tests from two clay sites were analyzed. The first case study site was underlain by very to extremely high-plasticity Quaternary London clay, and the second site was underlain by low- to intermediate-plasticity matrix dominant glacial till. The best predictions of static equivalent load-settlement behavior for very-high-plasticity clay were obtained from a new analysis technique that incorporated a soil-specific rate effect parameter (selected on the basis of the clays' plasticity index) that varied with pile settlement. In general, the UPM performed better for tests undertaken in the low- to intermediate-plasticity glacial till, as there is greater experience of RLT in these soils. The results of the study suggest that the development of analysis techniques would benefit greatly from tests in a wider variety of soil types. On the basis of the findings of this study, improvements to the UPM and Schmuker techniques are presented, which include pile settlement-dependent variation of the damping and rate effect parameters. The methylene blue (MB) stain test was used to determine the efficiency of lime modification of clay soils and to define the percentage of lime required to reach the stabilization field. Montmorillonite and kaolinite, mixed in variable proportions with quartz sand, were treated with differing percentages of lime, and the MB test was performed on both untreated and treated soils. Results show that the test can determine whether a soil is prone to efficient modification, follows the evolution of clay minerals in the lime modification field, and it also determines the quantity of lime necessary to enter the stabilization field. X-ray powder diffraction, thermal analyses, and electron microscopy observations of the montmorillonite-richer sample showed its crystal chemical evolution in the modification field. Mineralogical results match the outcome of the MB test, defining the same lime percentage for best modification (4%) and confirming that the test can be used for preliminary and ongoing analyses of lime treatment. A theoretical expression for clay soil-water characteristic curves (SWCC) is developed for cases in which the osmotic potential is small relative to the matrix potential, for the range of water potential lower than the cavitation value, based on the following foundations. Soil structure consists of saturated soil pods containing parallel soil particles, and angular interpod macropores possibly containing both air and water. The pod water is adsorbed to the particle surfaces, and subject to adsorption while the macropore water is subject to capillary potential (commonly referred to as suction). It is suggested that the capillary potential cannot be lower than the cavitation potential of the capillary water; at lower potentials, the macropore water drains into the pods and the matrix potential is represented solely by the adsorption potential. The paper examines the hypothesis that the adsorption potential is dominated by van der Waal forces, and this forms the basis for the theoretical SWCC. While the theoretical curve reasonably fits experimental data from several soils, kaolin soils depart from it, and pure montmorillonites fit only over a range of low potential, indicating that van der Waal adsorption forces may control adsorption potential for some, but not for all soils. Lime kiln dust (LKD) is used for modifying pavement subgrades to expedite construction on wet clayey soils. This paper describes the short-term development (typically, over the first 3 to 7 days) of electrical conductivity and penetration resistance of LKD-modified soils. The normalized net change of electrical conductivity is solely related to the LKD dosage. The decrease of electrical conductivity with time coincides with the increase of penetration resistance with time. The correlations of electrical conductivity with strength gain in LKD and lime-modified soils suggest that electrical conductivity measurements can potentially be useful for quality control in field applications. It is well accepted that the quality of soft clay samples obtained using standard fixed piston samplers can be relatively poor and that block samples are necessary to yield very high quality samples. However, for many practical projects it is not economically viable or physically practical to obtain block samples. In this project, the quality of standard 54 mm composite piston samples of soft clay is examined by comparing six separate sets of 54 mm samples to parallel block sampling. Sampling and laboratory testing was carried out by three different organizations at a well characterized highly uniform soft clay site in Norway. As expected, the work showed that the block samples behaved significantly differently from those obtained using the 54 mm sampler and were of higher quality. Block sample-derived parameters were considerably different from those obtained from the 54 mm sample tests. However, significant differences were also found between the different sets of 54 mm samples. Although the differences are less than when compared with block samples, the consequences of poor quality 54 mm sampling will be significant in engineering design. It is concluded that the differences are due to small details in the sampling operation such as the need to keep the piston effectively stationary at all times, to avoid overcoring and to handle the recovered sample carefully. If a well trained driller follows good quality practice, then relatively good samples can be obtained by the fixed piston sampler, which are suitable for analysis and design of routine engineering works. A laboratory index defined as gravimetric water content at ambient relative humidity of 75% (w75) is proposed for qualitatively classifying the swelling potential of clays and clayey soils (e.g., low, moderate, high). The methodology is calibrated by comparison with existing plasticity-based and suction-based classification methodologies for a series of natural clays from Missouri and Colorado and clay mixtures prepared to represent a wide range of swelling potential. Procedures are described for obtaining w75 by placing samples in the headspace of an environmental chamber maintained under controlled humidity using a saturated NaCl solution. The proposed methodology has potential advantages over existing expansive soil classification methods because a large number of samples may be tested concurrently, no specialized testing equipment is required, and testing procedures may be readily automated. In the present note, the susceptibility to necking of a subsurface barrier installed by the vibrating beam method in fine-grained soils is investigated by physical model tests. Two soils are investigated, a clayey soil and a silty soil. The model soil is prepared by moist tamping. The recipe of slurry in the model tests is widely used in the foundation engineering industry. The dynamic loading exerted by the vibration of the adjacent panel is simulated by a shake table. The test results show that soil plasticity and water content are the major influence factors on the susceptibility to necking. The plasticity index can be used as an indicator for the susceptibility to necking of subsurface barrier installed by the vibrating beam method in fine-grained soils. The work describes in situ measurements of crack induced permeability as a function of depth, (down to ∼1.75 m), in clay soils at two field sites, using the gas flow technique described in an earlier study. The gas flow response to applied pressure was found to exhibit a significant nonlinearity at all depths indicating non-Darcian flow despite the fact that the flow was likely to be well within the laminar flow regime. Application of three-dimensional finite-element models to describe the gas flow revealed that the nonlinearity is likely to be an intrinsic behavior related to the soil-gas flow interaction. The Forchheimer compressible flow equation successfully simulated the behavior at all depths. The viscous and inertial permeability parameters obtained from this analysis showed a wide range of values which were closely correlated to the pore-water content of the soil medium, clearly showing the influence of ped swelling on the contraction of macrovoid channels in the structured clay soil. Alibey Dam is located near Istanbul in Turkey on the Alibey Stream, 4.5 km north of its point of confluence with Golden Horn, an ancient submerged river mouth. It was constructed as an earthfill dam over 30-m-thick soft valley sediments. Before the construction of the dam, field and laboratory tests were performed to determine the geotechnical characteristics of the foundation soils. During the construction and many years after the construction of the earthfill embankments, including the cofferdams and the intermediate fills, the response of the foundation soils was monitored by extensive field instrumentation generating a unique long-term (over 25 years) database. With proper instrumentation and careful monitoring of the collected data, field construction rates could be adjusted and the earth dam was safely constructed on the thick soft deposits. Approaches to settlement prediction were evaluated in a historical context, starting with the simplified one-dimensional approach available at the time of construction to more sophisticated analyses including the employment of modern numerical methods, in terms of the recorded data. Standard subsurface exploration and field testing supplemented with conventional laboratory testing provided the relevant material parameters that were used in the finite element method. The only exception to this was the overall hydraulic conductivity of the deposit, which controlled the rate of consolidation. Early field observations were used to assign the appropriate hydraulic conductivity. An elastoplastic soil model in a coupled analysis of consolidation was employed in the analysis that yielded realistic predictions of field behavior in response to the complex construction history. The accurate prediction and monitoring of the behavior of soft and thick soil layers subjected to staged construction, as in the case of Alibey Dam, is very important for planning of the construction as well as the expected behavior after construction. This paper presents the results of an analysis of the spatial distribution of the excess pore-water pressure induced by piezocone penetration into overconsolidated clays. From the experimental results obtained for moderately and heavily overconsolidated clays, it was observed that the excess pore-water pressure increases monotonically from the piezocone surface to the outer boundary of the shear zone and then decreases logarithmically, approaching zero at the outer boundary of the plastic zone. It was also found that the size of the shear zone decreases from approximately 2.2 to 1.5 times the cone radius with increasing overconsolidation ratio (OCR), whereas the plastic radius is about 11 times the piezocone radius, regardless of the OCR. The expressions developed in this study based on the modified Cam clay model and the cylindrical cavity expansion theory, which take into consideration the effects of the strain rate and stress anisotropy, provide a good prediction of the initial pore-water pressure at the piezocone location. The method of predicting the spatial distribution of excess pore-water pressure proposed in this study is based on a linearly increasing Δushear in the shear zone and a logarithmically decreasing Δuoct, and was verified by comparing the pore-water pressure measured in overconsolidated specimens in the calibration chamber. Wetting/drying tests including cycling effects were performed on an argillaceous deep rock coming from a Callovo–Oxfordian deposit in eastern France. Bulk volume and water content were measured in order to estimate the importance of physical changes. Then, mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP) was performed on dry and moist samples in order to quantify the influence of hydraulic history on fracture. Results showed that shrinkage and swelling caused microcracks, which led to volume variations thus altering the structures of the rock. MIP tests performed on moist samples equilibrated with different hygrometric saline solutions allow unsaturated pores and classic water retention curves to be described so as to explain changes in the microstructure. The Cooper marl in Charleston, S.C., a deep layer of clayey soils approximately 5–21 m below the ground surface, is generally recognized as nonliquefiable material. Data from field cone penetration tests and laboratory tests of samples taken from the Cooper marl are used to investigate the adequacy of index properties-based criteria for assessing liquefaction susceptibility of clayey soils. In particular, the criterion based on soil behavior type index (Ic) and that based on Atterberg limits are examined. The results show that the Atterberg limits-based criterion adequately reflected the characteristics of the marl, whereas the Ic-based criterion erroneously identified the marl as being liquefiable. This paper presents the results of 150 finite-element simulations conducted to define the effects of excavation geometry, i.e., length, width, and depth of excavation, wall system stiffness, and factor of safety against basal heave on the three-dimensional ground movements caused by excavation through clays. The results of the analyses are represented by the plane strain ratio (PSR), defined as the maximum movement in the center of an excavation wall computed by three-dimensional analyses normalized by that computed by a plane strain simulation. A simple equation for PSR is presented based on excavation geometry, wall system stiffness, and factor of safety against basal heave. This PSR equation reasonably represents trends in results of the 150 simulations as well as those simulations reported in literature. When the excavated length normalized by the excavated depth of an excavation wall is greater than 6, results of plane strain simulations yield the same displacements in the center of that wall as those computed by a three-dimensional simulation. The potential of woodash to stabilize clay soil was evaluated. The evaluation involved the determination of the geotechnical properties of clay soil in its natural state as well as when mixed with varying proportions of woodash. The parameters tested included the particle size distribution, specific gravity, Atterberg limits, compaction characteristics, California bearing ratio (CBR) and the compressive strength. The CBR and strength tests were repeated after 28-day curing of the treated samples. Results showed that the geotechnical parameters of clay soil are improved substantially by the addition of woodash; plasticity was reduced by 35% and CBR and strength increased by 23–50% and 49–67%, respectively, depending on the compactive energy used. The highest CBR and strength values were achieved at 10% woodash. Results also showed that curing improved the strength of the woodash-treated clay. However, the strength gain was short lived as the strength quickly decreased after 7–14 days of curing. These results imply that although woodash provides some of the beneficial effects of lime in soil stabilization, such as plasticity and swell reduction, improved workability, and strength increase, it is unlikely to be a substitute for lime as strength gain is short lived. The conventional design of a piled foundation is based on a bearing capacity approach, and neglects the contribution of the raft. As a consequence, piled foundations are usually designed by overconservative criteria. With respect to the conventional approach, a more rational and economical solution could be obtained by accounting for the contribution of the raft toward the overall bearing capacity, but this potential is not exploited due to the lack of theoretical and experimental research on the behavior of piled rafts at failure. Based on both experimental evidence and three-dimensional finite element analyses, a simple criterion is proposed to evaluate the ultimate vertical load of a piled raft as a function of its component capacities, which can be simply evaluated by the conventional bearing capacity theories. Tests for determining the water retention curve (WRC) can be time-consuming and tedious, especially with deformable soils for which volume change and water content have to be simultaneously monitored. In some cases, predictive models can become a practical alternative to obtain an estimate of the WRC. However, very few models are available to predict the WRC of deformable materials under increasing suction. In this paper, the modified Kovács (MK) model, developed initially for incompressible soils, is extended to describe and, in some cases, predict the WRC of deformable clayey soils. This generalization of the MK model is performed by introducing the volumetric shrinkage curve (VSC) in its formulation. A curvilinear equation is proposed to represent the void ratio-suction function e(ψ) corresponding to the VSC. This VSC model and the extended MK model (MKd) are validated using experimental data taken from the literature. Empirical relationships are developed for predictive purposes to estimate the parameters involved, using basic geotechnical properties. The present study was undertaken to compare the capabilities of four of the known methods; more specifically, N2 adsorption, methylene blue (MB)-titration, MB-spot test, and ethylene glycol monoethyl ether (EGME) methods were evaluated to determine the specific surface area (SSA) of 16 different clayey soils. The study showed that N2 adsorption method underpredicts the SSA of soils, especially for smectitic soils. No significant differences were observed between N2 SSA, MB SSA-titration, or MB-spot test for kaolinitic soils. The SSA estimates of MB-titration and MB-spot test methods were highly correlated for all soils. The EGME method has a very different procedure from the MB methods; however, it was highly correlated with MB methods (r2=0.95). The N2 adsorption method had no correlation to other methods. The cation exchange capacity of tested soils was highly correlated to the SSA, as high as r2=0.77. No unique relationship was determined between the clay fraction and SSA. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Lead removal from water and contaminated soils was investigated using biosurfactant, anionic, and nonionic surfactants in continuously stirred batch reactors. Lead-contaminated water up to 100 mg/L and clay soil up to 3,000 mg/kg were used in this investigation. The surfactant concentration up to 10 critical micelle concentration was used. The speciation of lead into the micelles was quantified and the lead removal efficiency depended on the level of contamination, surfactant type, and concentration. Of the surfactants used, biosurfactant (produced from used vegetable oil) had the best removal efficiency (75%) at a lead contamination of 100 mg/L in water at pH of over 12. The Fourier-transformed infrared spectroscopy study showed that the carboxyl group in the biosurfactant was effective in removing the lead from the solution. Langmuir and Freundlich relationships were used to represent the micelle partitioning of lead in the surfactant solutions. Desorption of lead from contaminated kaolinite clay was represented using linear isotherms. The biosurfactant solution had a higher micelle partitioning for the lead from contaminated water and desorbing the lead from the contaminated soil compared to the other chemical surfactants. This paper extends Olson’s solution for one-dimensional consolidation under time-dependent loading with the assumption of constant coefficient of consolidation, to those with varying loading-dependent coefficients of consolidation. The investigation first presents the experimental study on a series of one-dimensional consolidation tests with various loading rate. Subsequently, the viscoelastic theory was applied to estimate the consolidation settlement and compared with the experimental results. Four consolidation tests with different loading rates were performed on three types of remolded clay soils with various plasticity indices to evaluate loading rate effects on the consolidation settlement. After explicitly performing the falling head permeability test at various stages during the conventional consolidation tests, the variation of coefficient of consolidation with external pressure was established and converted to the relationship between the coefficient of consolidation and the time of the corresponding pressure applied on the specimens for each loading rate test. The hereditary integral of viscoelastic theory was then applied to predict the settlement curve with time for each loading rate test. The findings indicate that the theoretical predictions using the loading-dependent coefficients of consolidation and experimental results in term of consolidation settlement are in good agreement. An experimental study was conducted to measure small-strain shear moduli of chemically treated sulfate-bearing expansive soils using the bender element test. The bender element test was chosen because it provides reliable and repeatable small strain shear modulus measurements and allows for the periodical monitoring of stiffness property responses of soil specimens under varying curing conditions. Bender element tests were conducted on cement and lime treated soils and the results were then analyzed to study the variations in stiffness properties of soil specimens at different sulfate levels and curing conditions. Both cement and lime treated natural and artificial clays with low sulfate level of 1,000 ppm showed considerable enhancements in small strain shear moduli, whereas the same treated soils at high sulfate level of 10,000 ppm showed less enhancements in shear moduli due to sulfate heaving. Also, enhancements in shear moduli were lower for soil specimens continuously soaked under water compared to those cured in the humidity room. Tube sampling disturbance effects are investigated in this paper based on the results of constant rate of strain consolidation tests and unconsolidated undrained triaxial compression tests conducted on resedimented Boston blue clay sampled in the laboratory using a specifically designed device and employing various tubes differing in size, diameter to thickness ratio, and tip geometry. The effects of tube geometry were assessed based on comparison of the residual effective stresses, the reconsolidation strains, the undrained strength, and the one-dimensional drained compression behavior. Increasing degradation in the engineering properties was observed with decreasing diameter to thickness ratio (B/t), and the negative impact of a blunt tip geometry could not be compensated for even by a substantial increase in B/t. Comparison of these results to those obtained from triaxial element tests in which disturbance was simulated according to the ideal sampling approach (ISA), indicated that tube sampling is associated with far greater disturbances than what is accounted for by the ISA. Further, additional comparisons with the results of tests run on actual field samples of low over consolidation ratio Boston blue clay from two sites in the Boston area indicate that the behavior observed in the laboratory sampled soil is generally representative of actual field data. This paper aims to show that the addition of lime and lime/cement can significantly improve both the stiffness and the resistance to permanent deformation of clay soils even under adverse, though realistic, curing conditions. The AASHTO Guide for Design of Pavement Structures incorporates a method of calculating subgrade resilient modulus (MR), using repeated load triaxial testing, with respect to seasonal variations of the soil’s moisture content and temperature, while the equivalent British specifications adopt a “soaked California bearing ratio” approach. In practice 8°C is a realistic worst case curing temperature in situ and a (necessarily) wetter underlying clay will allow water to be drawn into the chemically treated layer during curing as a result of suctions, while the material will experience a small degree of confinement after compaction. These conditions have been replicated in a series of repeated load triaxial tests on lime and lime/cement stabilized, predominantly kaolinitic clay and the results compared with those from sealed samples, which were also cured at 8°C. All samples were subjected to 100 cycles of stresses representing 20, 40, 60, and 80% of the relevant undrained shear strength. Triaxial consolidation undrained shear tests are performed on both undisturbed and remolded Ariake clays to investigate the undrained shear strength behavior. When the applied confining stress is larger than the triaxial consolidation yield stress, the strength envelopes expressed in the plot of undrained shear strength versus confining stress of both the undisturbed and the remolded Ariake clays are straight lines through the origin. The strength envelope of the remolded Ariake clays lies above that of the undisturbed Ariake clays when the applied confining stress is larger than the consolidation yield stress. This difference is caused by the difference in water content between undisturbed and remolded states. When the data obtained from triaxial consolidation undrained shear tests of both the undisturbed and the remolded Ariake clays are plotted in the plot of undrained shear strength versus water content, it is found that the undrained shear strength decreases uniquely with the increase in water content. This paper presents the findings of a digital image analysis based study of clay fills, compacted with dynamic compaction for a building foundation in northeast Beijing, People’s Republic of China. Three levels of compaction energy were used at three compaction pits, respectively. Ground settlements and soil density increased with the number of dynamic impact blows. Microstructures of dry clay fill samples from the pits were examined with a scanning electronic microscope (SEM). Their microstructural parameters were further measured and analyzed quantitatively using digital image analysis. The clay SEM images are automatically converted into ternary images representing particles, pores, and contact zones for effective and efficient calculation of the clay microstructural parameters. The effect of dynamic compaction on the clay microstructural properties at different blow numbers and compaction energy levels is examined. Analysis revealed that the changes of the soil microstructural properties have a good correlation with the observed ground settlements at the three pits. The time-dependent behavior of soils has been investigated extensively through one-dimensional and triaxial test conditions. Most of the observations in literature have focused on the determination of the time-dependent behavior of clayey soils, whereas the reported experimental studies of granular materials are few. This paper presents an up-to-date review of the various observed time- and rate-dependent phenomena that are known to exist for both clay and sand. The description is carried out separately for creep, stress relaxation, rate dependency, and structuration in laboratory experiments. All of the above-mentioned phenomena are present in both sand and clay. The time-dependent phenomena are more pronounced in clay than sand. However, sand exhibits relatively large deformations at high confining pressures because of grain crushing. Furthermore, the review revealed an essential characteristic situation for soils. That is whether the time-dependent behavior can be characterized as isotach or nonisotach. It seems that the isotach behavior is adequate for describing the time effects in clays in most situations. Different classes of constitutive models have been developed to capture the time-dependent viscous phenomena (creep, stress relaxation, and rate effects) observed in soils. Models based on empirical, rheological, and general stress-strain-time concepts have been studied. The first part is a review of the empirical relations, which apply only to problems of specific boundary conditions and frequently involve natural time alone. The second part deals with different rheological models used for describing the viscous effects in the field of solid mechanics. The rheological models are typically developed for metals and steel but are, to some extent, used to characterize time effects in geomaterials. The third part is a review of constitutive laws that describe not only viscous effects but also the inviscid (rate-independent) behavior of soils, in principle, under any possible loading condition. Special attention is paid to elastoviscoplastic models that combine inviscid elastic and time-dependent plastic behavior. Various general elastoviscoplastic models can roughly be divided into two categories: Models based on the concept of overstress and models based on nonstationary flow surface theory. The present contribution reports on a mixed numerical experimental study of the time dependent processes in saturated soils with reference to isotropic consolidation. Owing to its relative simplicity, isotropic consolidation is often viewed as a basic tool for inferring the material parameters of various constitutive models. Within this modeling framework, the paper advocates the use of critical state models for an accurate description of the time dependent deformation of clayey soils. Material models, in which the critical state model applies only to the subcritical region, have been also addressed. Examples include models where the supercritical region is cut off, e.g., by a Mohr–Coulomb surface. Starting with the modified Cam clay model, as a classical representative, the paper revisits a simple isotropic consolidation test. It is suggested that such a conventional laboratory experiment, when combined with a suitable optimization procedure, is sufficient in deriving the desired material parameters, including the initial void ratio, deformation dependent variation of the coefficient of permeability and the preconsolidation pressure representing here an important measure of the structural strength of soils. Proper understanding of the field performance of lime-treated expansive soils requires the evaluation of their unsaturated properties under stress conditions similar to that in the field. This paper studied the influence of net vertical stress on the soil-water characteristic curves (SWCC) of lime-treated expansive clay. The first phase of this study investigated the influence of lime content and curing period under low net vertical stress (7 kPa) using axis translation and filter paper techniques with simultaneous measurements of sample volume change. The second phase evaluated the SWCCs of untreated and lime-treated clays under vertical stresses of 100 and 600 kPa. Different representations of SWCCs were considered in the interpretation of test results. Test results indicated that lime content had a significant effect on the shape and air entry value of SWCCs because of changes in soil microstructure, whereas curing period had a far less significant effect. Furthermore, the application of net vertical stress delayed the desaturation of samples causing increase in air entry value. On the basis of plots for the variation of void ratio versus suction, the increase in air entry value was attributed to considerable reduction in volume (void ratio) associated with the application of the net vertical stress causing samples to remain saturated up to high suctions levels.
