This study uses fly-ash-based superplasticized geopolymer by adding a naphthalene-centered superplasticizer to the geopolymerized soil. Alkali-binder ratios and alkali-activator ratios are varied simultaneously with a molarity of 10M. The optimum dosages of binder, geopolymer, and superplasticized geopolymer are found from unconfined compression tests. California Bearing Ratio (CBR), pH, consolidation, water-holding capacity, and microstructure tests were performed on optimum dosages. The clayey soil's undrained shear strength and CBR value increased as the geopolymer was superplasticized. The 28-day undrained shear strength of geopolymerized clay was around 300 kPa, attained within three days of the curing period with superplasticized geopolymer. This is because adding a superplasticizer increases the polymerization reaction rate and improves the geopolymer's performance. The maximum undrained shear strength was attained within seven days of the curing period for both cases. The undrained shear strength after a curing period of 7, 14, and 28 days for geopolymer and superplasticized geopolymer was found to be almost the same value, which shows that after seven days, curing has little role in strength improvement. The hydraulic conductivity and coefficient of consolidation of geopolymerized soil increased with the addition of superplasticizer due to the reduction in fine particles and plasticity of the residual soil. Microstructural studies using scanning electron microscope and x-ray diffraction techniques showed an interaction between soil, geopolymer, and superplasticizer, thus confirming the formation of geopolymer gel and increased polymerization rate with the superplasticizer. Enhancing the dynamic properties of expansive soils using cementitious materials has attracted the attention of many researchers over the past few decades. Supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs) can be used as partial substitutes for cement owing to their pozzolanic activity that further improves the mechanical performance of cement-stabilized soils upon curing. In this study, the effect of cement and zeolite incorporation on the mechanical behavior of expansive clay was quantified using the pressure wave velocity (Vp) indicator obtained from ultrasonic pulse velocity tests performed at different curing times. Furthermore, a polynomial model was developed to establish the relationship between Vp and zeolite replacement levels at specific curing times and cement contents. The results show that a polynomial function captured the decreasing trend of Vp upon the increase in zeolite at curing times below 14 days. Additionally, the developed equation explained the upward trend of Vp owing to the pozzolanic activity of zeolite at later curing times with an accuracy of over 92%. The coefficients of the polynomial model also increased with the increment of the cement percentage which conformed to the consecutive rise in Vp. Ultimately, the polynomial coefficients were expressed in terms of cement content and curing time using the Volterra series. Using this model, the optimum percentage of cement replaced with zeolite (Zopt), the efficiency of using Zopt instead of cement, and the percentage of zeolite replacement to achieve equivalent Vp of cemented clay samples (ZC) were estimated. The findings of this study contribute to promoting geotechnical sustainability by replacing cement with zeolite that has a considerably lower environmental footprint. Clay is a type of soil that can be found in many construction projects. For instance, many roads and buildings' foundations are constructed on clay soils. To ensure the necessary strength of the clay under the main structure, the soil should often be stabilized using adhesive construction materials such as cement. Interestingly, a portion of the cement could be replaced with other minerals not only to improve engineering performance but also to promote sustainability by lowering cement consumption. In this study, the effect of zeolite as a partial replacement for cement on the strength of clay soils was experimentally evaluated. The effect of various design parameters, such as cement replacement level and curing time, on the stability of clays was investigated using an advanced technique called the ultrasonic pulse velocity (UPV) test. Foam lightweight soil (FLS) has been widely used in geotechnical engineering because of their high strength, low density, and thermal insulation. However, few scholars have researched its application to subgrade engineering, especially roadbed widening. In this case, this special artificial soil can significantly reduce the differential settlement of subgrades due to its lightweight and high strength. In the research background, a series of laboratory experiments were conducted to investigate the effects of mixing ratio and fibers on the physical, mechanical, and microporous structural properties of clay-based foamed lightweight soils (CFLS), with clay and cement as the main raw materials. The experimental results indicate that preparing CFLS for road widening using clay soils from around highways as raw materials is an alternative treatment method. During the application process, one should select the optimal mixing ratio and fiber content considering the fluidity, stability, and mechanical strength of CFLS. In addition, the dynamic modulus of elasticity and cumulative plastic strain of CFLS samples also indicate that CFLS has superior dynamic properties compared with cohesive soils and can meet the criteria for road construction. As a common natural phenomenon in clayey soil, drought-induced desiccation cracks impose danger to soil structures by degrading soil mechanical strength and hydraulic properties. In this study, through a series of field tests, we evaluated the effect of microbially induced calcite precipitation (MICP) technology on the suppression of desiccation cracks in field clayey soil and examined the impacts of MICP treatment methods (two-phase and one-phase methods) and cementation solution (CS) concentrations (0.5 and 1.0 M) on soil desiccation cracking behaviors and soil microstructure variation. The results revealed that MICP is capable of suppressing desiccation cracks in field soil. The surface crack ratio, average crack width, total crack length, and average crack depth decreased with the increase of treatment cycles and CS concentration. The two-phase MICP method performed better on soil crack suppression than the one-phase MICP method. Further CaCO3 distribution and soil microstructure characterizations indicated that the CaCO3 crystals generated by the MICP process contributed dominantly to the soil crack suppression by filling crack space, bonding soil particles, and reducing soil water evaporation. Pore-size distribution (PSD) of soil is a fundamental property that determines flows of water, heat, chemicals, and electricity and controls distributions of stress and deformation. PSD can be intrinsically related to the soil–water retention curve (SWRC), which is a constitutive relationship describing how the soil skeleton retains pore water via adsorption and capillarity. A general framework to quantify soil's PSD is proposed by first fitting an analytical SWRC model to experimental water retention curves that explicitly separate the SWRC into an adsorptive SWRC and a capillary SWRC. The PSD is then estimated at incremental steps by combining the capillary SWRC and the conventional Young–Laplace equation relating capillary pressure to pore size. Cumulative and density PSD curves for 11 soils covering a wide spectrum of soil types are determined and compared with the PSD functions independently measured using mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP). Good agreement is observed in the estimated pore size range, distribution pattern, and peak position determined from the two different methods. Differences observed in the methods are attributed to differences inherent in the use of wetting and nonwetting fluids to probe the pore space. The SWRC-based method generally characterizes pore sizes ranging from 100 to 0.02 μm with a major peak located within a pore diameter range of 1–10 μm. As the clay content increases, a secondary peak becomes evident at smaller pore sizes (about 0.01–0.1 μm), where the bimodal pattern reflects the dual-porosity microstructure commonly observed for clayey soils. For soils containing swelling clays, PSD can change substantially with variation in water content; thus, the water-based method is more appropriate than MIP for applications to geotechnical engineering practice. The use of bacteria-based self-healing concrete for substructures in ground conditions is an area of increasing interest for enhancing the durability and longevity of infrastructure. In line with this objective, the present study investigates the bio-self-healing performance of a cementitious material embedded in clay soil with varying chemical exposures and water saturation regimes. Laboratory experiments were conducted on pre-cracked mortar specimens with Bacillus subtilis encapsulated in perlite. The specimens were incubated in the soil with different pH and sulphate levels, representing three exposure classes (based on Eurocodes). The crack healing ratio was evaluated through visual inspection and capillary-water absorption—before and after soil incubation. Findings showed that all inoculated specimens exhibited healing ratios noticeably larger than those of the control specimens, which mainly experienced small autogenous healing. Of note, the best healing performance was observed when the soil was fully saturated and pH-neutral. Interactions between adjacent piled-raft foundations may induce additional settlement and cause the tilt of the structure. This case study investigates the long-term performance of a large piled-raft foundation system supporting high and heavy alumina solution storage tanks based on field measurements and three-dimensional (3D) numerical simulations. To properly consider the interactions among rafts, piles, and soils; the elastoplastic behavior of clayey and sandy soils; and the consolidation behavior of soil after construction, a 3D finite-difference code was utilized for the numerical modeling. Two undrained mechanical analyses were conducted to simulate the installation of foundations/tanks and the filling of alumina solution into the tanks, while two coupled hydromechanical analyses were performed to model the period between the two undrained stages and the stage after tank filling, respectively. The predictive capability of the numerical model was checked by comparing the simulation results first with single pile load test data and then with in situ settlement measurements at different locations of the piled-raft foundations. The long-term behavior of the piled-raft foundations was further investigated by analyzing various aspects including the axial force variation along the pile at different locations, the time-settlement relation at monitoring locations, the vertical effective stress increment and displacement of soil, and the differential settlement between monitoring locations. Based on the simulations, the tilt of the platform was mainly due to the superposition of additional stresses near the centerline of the two rows of piled-raft foundations. Finally, parametric studies were conducted to investigate the interactions among the piled-raft foundations at different pile length configurations. The results show that by properly increasing the length of the piles near the centerline of the two rows of piled-raft foundations, the differential settlement of the platforms can be mitigated. This document serves as a follow-up to a previous paper on the use of lime and rice husk ash (RHA) to stabilize clayey soil. The original paper found that the addition of lime and RHA increased the strength of the soil, with the highest strength observed in samples containing 7% lime and 12% RHA. New ways to apply sustainable materials, such as biomass components, are essential for reducing dependence on fossil fuels. This work investigated the engineering properties of unsaturated expansive subgrade soils stabilized by bio-based energy coproducts containing lignin. Lignin is a waste by-product of the paper and pulp industry that is frequently burned. Highway subgrade could consume lignin as an environmentally benign, low-cost, and energy-efficient chemical substance for soil stabilization. Swell and shrink behavior of expansive subgrade soils complicates highway construction and causes damage to existing highways. However, research on the hydromechanical properties and volume change behavior of lignin-stabilized expansive soil is limited, and better insight is required into its unsaturated behavior for safe and economical pavement design practices. In this research, a series of geotechnical laboratory tests were conducted to characterize expansive subgrade soils treated with lignin by determining the Atterberg limits, compaction and consolidation behaviors, swelling characteristics, and water retention properties. The mechanisms influencing the changes in engineering properties of lignin-treated expansive soils were further investigated using soil pH, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy analysis. The study shows that the optimal lignin content contributed to an acceptable degree of soil stabilization. The lignin-based cementing material effectively bonds soil particles together and fills pores, thereby preventing water infiltration into the soil and reducing the swell–shrink potential of stabilized soils. Freeze–thaw cycles can deteriorate the expansive soil performance. Phase change materials (PCMs) absorb and store heavy latent heat from the environment, which can be utilized to mitigate freeze–thaw deteriorations in expansive soil. In this study, an environmentally friendly paraffin-based PCM was selected, which included two different forms: liquid (pPCM) and microcapsules (mPCM). The volume change, mechanical properties, thermal properties, and microstructure of the improved soil were studied. These results showed that PCMs can release considerable thermal energy during phase transitions, which improves the thermal stability of the soil. The pPCM enhanced the plasticity of soil and prevented brittle failure; mPCM reduced the damage to the soil microstructure caused by freeze–thaw cycles. Macroscopically, it weakened the swell–shrink behavior and limited the degradation of the resilient modulus, unconfined compressive strength, and failure strain of expansive soil. The optimal PCM content was determined based on the mechanical and thermal properties of the improved soil. Monopiles, which have been most extensively used in the offshore wind industries, are usually subject to threats from local scour. The effects of local scour on the bearing capacity of monopiles have been studied based on deterministic soil properties and local scour dimensions. However, the properties of the seabed soil and the dimensions of the local scour both have uncertainty. In this study, a new nonstationary random field model, which can better simulate the nonstationary characteristics of the seabed clayey soil and result in a safer probabilistic design of foundations, is proposed to characterize the spatial variability of the seabed clayey soil. Then, the effects of the spatial variability of the seabed clayey soil and the uncertainty of the local scour depth on the bearing capacity of monopiles are investigated under both uniaxial loading and vertical-horizontal-moment (VHM) combined loading using the random finite-element method combined with kriging metamodeling technique and Monte Carlo simulation. The undrained shear strength of the seabed clayey soil was simulated with a lognormally distributed nonstationary random field, and the local scour depth was treated as a uniform random variable. The negative correlation between them was also considered. The results show that the factor of safety required for the local scoured seabed decreased from 3.3 to 2.6 as the negative correlation was enhanced, greater than or equal to that [factor of safety (FS)=2.6 ] for the intact seabed. The procedure of analyzing the design failure envelop of a monopile in spatially variable clayey soil with a local scour proposed in this study can provide a reference for geotechnical engineers. In the literature, the influence of spatial variability of the undrained shear strength of foundation soils on the bearing capacity of footings is limited to footings seated directly on the foundation. This is an unlikely arrangement in practice. This paper revisits the footing problem by considering a thin granular layer between a strip footing and soft foundation soil using analytical and stochastic numerical modeling. The analyses are extended to the case of a geosynthetic-reinforced granular layer and to the idealized case of no granular layer. The study shows that the probability that the ultimate bearing capacity for the footing is smaller than the deterministic design value is greater for all three scenarios with randomly uniform clay soil than for the same soil with isotropic or anisotropic spatial variability of strength at practical levels of reliability index β (e.g., β≥3.09 for a permanent footing). The reason for this outcome, which may appear counterintuitive, is explained. Design charts are provided to estimate the deterministic design bearing capacity of a rigid strip footing required to meet a range of target reliability index for the three footing scenarios examined in this study. The low bearing capacity of expansive soils often results in serviceability issues and premature failures of infrastructure built upon them. Various studies have demonstrated the use of different soil treatment methods using mechanical or chemical approaches to stabilize the weak ground as a precaution. Most of the reported studies are limited to either lab-based investigations or field monitoring works without the scientific connection between theory and translation. This study aims to verify the field application of a novel soil stabilization method by conducting laboratory-controlled experiments and field performance testing as verification. Enzyme–based soil stabilization was adopted for in-situ clay soil in combination with ordinary portland cement as a sustainable stabilization approach. Soil samples were collected at different regions from the field to evaluate the effectiveness and the mechanism of soil stabilization in the field by the means of replicating stabilization at the laboratory scale using identical mixing proportions of the additives. The mechanical behavior of stabilized soil was assessed through the unconfined compression strength and California bearing ratio test methods. In addition, the changes in the chemical composition of the soil due to the additives were evaluated through the X-ray diffraction testing technique and microporosity test using 2D images translated to 3D profiles from X-ray micro CT tomography. The efficacy of field stabilization was evaluated by conducting the falling weight deflectometer test in the stabilized site. The present work aims to evaluate expansive soil stabilization using different additives. Twenty soil mixtures consisting of 10%, 20%, 25%, and 30% zeolitic tuff (ZT) with 2%, 4%, and 6% lime in various combinations were used to stabilize the soil for pavement subbase application. A comprehensive test program, including Atterberg's limits, compaction, unconfined compression strength (UCS), California Bearing Ratio (CBR), resilient modulus, and permanent deformation, was performed on natural and stabilized soil specimens. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) supplied with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM/EDX) was used to confirm the study findings. Adding ZT increases the availability of the silica and alumina needed for the pozzolanic reaction; test results revealed that adding ZT increases the maximum dry unit weight, CBR, UCS, resilient modulus, decreases plasticity, and permanent deformation. Temperature significantly affects the mechanical properties of geomaterials, particularly the creep behavior of soft clayey soils. Thus, an appropriate constitutive model to describe the time-dependent stress-strain behavior of clayey soils at various temperatures is necessary. This study performed temperature-controlled oedometer tests on two clayey soils: Hong Kong marine deposit (HKMD) and kaolinite clay (kaolin). The thermally-induced strain and creep strain rates under different temperature paths were investigated and discussed. A novel one-dimensional (1D) thermal elastic viscoplastic (TEVP) model was developed based on an existing 1D elasto viscoplastic (EVP) model. In the proposed model, the viscoplastic strain rate of soils can be described using three state variables: effective stress, strain, and temperature. The proposed model can be conveniently implemented in creep analysis with the equivalent time concept. This study investigated the different geotechnical characteristics of soil stabilization with the addition of lime and rice husk ash (RHA) in varying amounts (3%, 5%, 7%, and 9% lime, and 4%, 8%, 12%, and 16% RHA). A series of compaction, unconfined compressive strength (UCS), California bearing ratio (CBR), pH, and X-ray diffraction (XRD) tests were performed in the laboratory to assess the impact of the considered admixtures on the stabilized soil parameters. This study also proposes the successful integration of an artificial neural network (ANN) and a Gaussian process regression (GPR) with the experimental UCS observations. The lime concentration, RHA concentration, and curing period were considered as the input parameters, and UCS was considered as the response. The proposed framework was extended to analyze the compressive behavior of treated soil on the minuscule level. Such coupled machine learning-based experimental investigation can provide deep insight into the soil behavior which otherwise would have remained unexplored due to the prohibitive nature of performing laboratory experiments on a large scale. The findings demonstrated the effectiveness of RHA in addition to lime in stabilizing the considered expansive soil. Curing temperature and curing mode could affect the mechanical properties of cement-stabilized soil, which is of both scientific and practical importance for cement mixing performance. This paper aims to present the strength development of cemented soil cured in a water and 95% relative humidity (RH) environment with a series of curing temperatures (T) based on laboratory tests and model characterization. The base soil was low-liquid-limit organic clay (OL) classified by the Unified Soil Classification System (USCS). Unconfined compression (UC) testing was conducted in this study, and a combination of Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electronic microscopy (SEM), and energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) was used to further investigate the microcharacteristics of the stabilized specimens. Results showed that the unconfined compressive strength (UCS or qu) of cemented soil increased with the increment of temperatures T both at early (7 days) and long-term (90 days) curing periods. Nevertheless, the cemented soil cured in 95% RH mode constantly achieved higher strength compared with that cured in water. The qu of 28 and 90 days gained in 95% RH mode can be taken as 1.2–1.5 times and 1.4–2.0 times of that in the water bath. In addition, the crossover effect was observed in samples cured in water when T reached 80°C, which was verified by the decalcification of calcium silicate hydrates (C-S-H) formed inside cemented soil through microtests. Based on the observations, a modified hyperbolic model characterizing the strength development of samples was proposed, in which the effects of curing temperature and curing time could both be considered regardless of the crossover effect. Moreover, the failure pattern of samples under different curing conditions was also analyzed. A soil water unit weight of 9.8 kN/m3 has been universally considered to quantify soil volumetric phase properties such as void ratio and degree of saturation, but has been found to greatly vary depending on soil type and the volume scale with which it is defined. Recent experimental and theoretical evidence has indicated that the unit weight of soil water can be significantly greater than 9.8 kN/m3 for clayey soils when gravimetric water content is less than 30%. A soil water unit weight as high as 18.8 kN/m3 is evident for some expansive soils at low water content. The significance of abnormally high water unit weight in quantifying soil phase volumes, saturation, and void ratio was experimentally assessed for various clayey soils and theoretically interpreted as a function of water content and soil type. For clayey soils with low liquid limit, average soil water unit weight can be as high as 12.5 kN/m3 for gravimetric water content less than 10%. This leads to an overestimation of liquid-phase saturation and void ratio by as much as 8% if a soil water unit weight of 9.8 kN/m3 is used. For clayey soil with a high liquid limit, the average soil water unit weight can be as high as 18.8 kN/m3 for water content less than 18%, leading to overestimation of liquid-phase saturation by as much as 36% and void ratio by as much as 20% if 9.8 kN/m3 is used. Charts were developed to estimate average soil water unit weight as a function of soil specific surface area and water content, and as a function of liquid limit and water content. The commonly used value of 9.8 kN/m3 for water unit weight can lead to significant errors in estimating phase volumes, void ratio, and saturation for clayey soils. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper, a modified/extended rotational hardening (RH) rule is applied to the nonassociated simple anisotropic constitutive model, SANICLAY-D, for clayey soils. In the proposed model, the destructuration mechanism, as well as zero and nonzero fabric anisotropy at critical state (CS), are considered. A detailed model formulation with the RH rule that yields a unique CS in the e-ln(p′) space is presented including an appropriate form of the relatively simple substepping integration algorithm. In addition, the model is implemented into ABAQUS finite-element software using a User-defined Material (UMAT) subroutine and used in the simulation of various experimental tests. The modified SANICLAY-D model (SANICLAY-MD) is meticulously calibrated step by step for Saint-Alban sensitive soft clay. Drained and undrained triaxial tests after various consolidation paths as well as the direct simple shear (DSS) test are simulated for Saint-Alban and Bothkennar clays as a boundary value problem. Simulation results approve the SANICLAY-MD model's performance in the prediction of the natural soil behavior. Results show that neglecting the effect of fabric anisotropy at CS and destructuration of natural clays can lead to inaccurate prediction in the constitutive modeling of intact soft soils. Singapore has a relatively high water table. When liquefied natural gas (LNG) storage systems are built in soils below the water table in Singapore, the engineering properties of the surrounding soils could be improved through cement stabilization. Due to the extremely low temperature (T) of LNG (approximately −162°C), the effect of ultralow T on the physical and mechanical properties of cement-stabilized soil in case of accidental LNG leakage should be investigated. However, existing studies on cement-stabilized soils are limited to T above −20°C. Therefore, in this study laboratory experiments to quantify volumetric expansion, unconfined compressive strength (UCS), and Young's modulus (E) of cement-stabilized soils at −40°C, −80°C, and −120°C were conducted. The experimental results indicated that the stabilized soils' volumetric expansion reached ≤2.6% at −120°C. The UCS and E of the stabilized soils increased from 0.9 to 27.6 MPa and from 99.8 to 2,669 MPa, respectively, and the T decreased from 24°C to −120°C. In summary, the ultralow T induced limited volumetric expansion (<3%) for cement-stabilized soil and significantly increased its strength and E, which indicated that cement soil stabilization could be beneficial for underground LNG storage systems in Singapore when exposed to accidental LNG leakage. The performance of the novel fish anchor has been assessed through field tests. The tests were carried out at three different locations in the Swan River, Perth. The water depths were 2.91–4.73 m. The riverbed soils consisted of clay (Location 1), silty clay (Location 2) and silt (Location 3). The anchor was installed in the riverbed by dropping first through an air column followed by a water column, and finally striking the riverbed at an impact velocity of 10.4 (Location 1), 11.43 (Location 2), 11.72 (Location 3) m/s. The anchor tip embedment depth in the riverbed was measured at 1–2.5 times the anchor length. For similar impact velocity, the tip embedment depth in clay was 1.56–1.68 and 2–2.1 times of that in silty clay and silt, respectively. The capacity was found to reduce with loading angle at the padeye to the horizontal. The ultimate capacity was 1.5–2.6 times the weight of the anchor submerged in water for loading angle 90°, which increased to 8.2–15.6 times the weight for θ0=∼16°. The fish anchor dove, as opposed to pull out of the riverbed, for loading angles ≤37–47° , resulting in nonelliptical failure envelopes, which have been expressed mathematically. Several widely used field methods for estimating postliquefaction ground deformation are based on the laboratory data from one series of cyclic simple shear tests performed on one uniform clean sand reconstituted to three relative densities. It is not clear if the trends of this one data set are applicable to other clean sands, nonplastic silty sands, and nonplastic silts. A database of 579 test results on postliquefaction volumetric strain, including 299 test results that relate maximum shear strain to the factor of safety against liquefaction triggering, was compiled and used to examine trends for these soils. The database includes postcyclic test data on 10 clean sands, 2 gravels, 3 silty sands, 5 silts, and 3 clayey soils. The enlarged cyclic testing database was used to develop models that estimate postliquefaction volumetric strain and maximum shear strain as a function of soil type, state, and seismic demand. The models are applicable to uniform nonplastic soil. The state parameter was used in addition to relative density and void ratio to characterize the state of the soil. The drying phenomenon in clays is a multiphysical process accompanied by alterations in the thermal, hydraulic, and mechanical states of the multiphase system. Reversible and irreversible characteristics of shrinkage deformation have been observed experimentally in clayey soils for different ranges of moisture contents. The kinematics of drying due to evaporation and drying-induced shrinkage can be studied by utilizing a coupled thermo-hydro-mechanical (THM) model. An accurate evaluation of drying-induced shrinkage is needed to investigate the thermal cracking and damage of geomaterials. In this study, we developed a thermoporoelastoplastic constitutive framework assuming a non-associative plastic flow rule that can accurately model the transversely isotropic behavior of stiff natural clays in unsaturated conditions. All material parameters used in the non-associative transversely isotropic constitutive model were calibrated based on experimental observations of Boom clay. Then, the capability of the model was assessed by analyzing the convective drying experiment on natural Boom clay. The comparison of the numerical and experimental results confirms the plausibility of the hypotheses made in this study. The results show that the first stage of evaporation ends rapidly and the falling rate period (second stage of evaporation) is the dominant evaporation mechanism due to the intrinsic hydraulic properties of Boom clay and the high evaporative demand of the environment. The developed model reasonably captures the anisotropic elastic and plastic deformations of the clayey soil during the transient drying process. Numerical results demonstrate that drying shrinkage induces a 30% reduction in porosity in which approximately 82% of the total volumetric deformation in drying-induced shrinkage is irrecoverable (i.e., plastic). Moreover, the results indicate that most of the plastic deformation occurs in the first couple of hours of the drying process, when the soil's unsaturated condition is in a funicular state (i.e., where capillary pressure is dominant). Finally, the last section of this paper is devoted to a sensitivity analysis of the THM behavior of Boom clay with respect to its elastic and plastic strength. The parametric study shows approximately 10% more reduction in the final surface shrinkage when the difference between the slopes of the drying-induced compression line and the swelling line (i.e., λ−κ) is doubled. In this study, the suction induced by stress release was investigated by measuring the suction of instantaneously unloaded MX80 bentonite specimens after wetting in an oedometer either under different vertical stresses or under a constant-volume condition. Swell-consolidation tests were also performed, and the results were compared with those of specimens wetted under different vertical stresses or a constant-volume condition. The microstructure of the unloaded specimens was investigated using mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP). The water content and void ratio as well as the degree of saturation of specimens were also determined. Results showed that in the case of limited water exchange between macropores and micropores during stress release, the change in suction was equal to that of stress (−ds/dσv=1). By contrast, with water exchange between macropores and micropores, soil swelling occurred, and the variation of suction was higher than that of stress (−ds/dσv>1). A method was proposed allowing such water exchange between macropores and micropores to be determined (−ds/dσv−modified=1 , where σv−modified is the modified stress considering water exchange), evidencing the macropore drying due to stress release. Comparison of results from MX80 bentonite and other clayey soils showed that when the nonclay (grains such as quartz, calcite, and so on) fraction (NCF) was lower than 35% by mass, NCF had an insignificant effect on −ds/dσv−modified (equal to 1). By contrast, in the case of higher NCF (>35%), −ds/dσv−modified became lower than 1, and the higher the NCF, the lower the −ds/dσv−modified value. Pore-water pressure in soil is caused by three physically distinguishable sources: ambient (environmental) pressure, surface tension–induced capillary pressure, and the soil's electromagnetic potential–induced adsorptive pressure. The former two form the conventional concept of pore-water pressure, which is considered a constant within a soil-water-air representative elementary volume and can be directly measured by piezometer (under saturated and compressive states) or tensiometer (under unsaturated and tensile states). The third one can be called adsorption-induced pore-water pressure and is localized within a certain distance to the particle surface of soil or intercrystalline surface of swelling clay. The adsorption-induced pore-water pressure is always compressive and dictates the water phase transition in soil by altering water's freezing point, density, and viscosity, among other physical properties. A framework of quantifying the adsorption-induced pore-water distribution via the measured soil water isotherm is presented for any soil type under any given water content. It is demonstrated that the adsorption-induced pore-water pressure can be up to 1.6 GPa in the first few layers of hydration, but will diminish to zero at a distance equivalent to the gravimetric water content >1% for sandy soil and greater than a few percent for silty soil. In clayey soil, the adsorption-induced pore-water pressure can sustain tens of megapascals even at much farther distance, equivalent to ∼30% water content. In expansive clay, the adsorption-induced pore-water pressure inside the crystalline lamellae can exceed 800 MPa. The soil water density functions of a silty soil and a bentonite clay predicted by the proposed framework matched well with that measured independently from the conventional consolidation testing, validating the framework to determine the spatial distribution of the adsorption-induced pore-water pressure in soil. Smart irrigation is one application of digital agriculture that can be used to achieve improved crop yields while saving water and energy. Many variations of smart irrigation can be applied, but there is no consensus among the scientific community as to which method is the best practice. The objective of this research was to evaluate two smart irrigation methods: a soil moisture–based method using sensors and an evapotranspiration- (ET-) based technique. The selected crop was sweet corn. Growth variables (biomass, yield, harvest index, and water productivity) were compared for each of the two methods. Three irrigation regimes were applied for each method: 60%, 90%, and 120% of crop evapotranspiration (ETc) for the ET-based method, and 25%, 30%, and 35% of the total soil moisture for the soil moisture–based method. Corn sap flow was measured in response to the three treatments in the soil moisture–based experiment to measure transpiration. The results showed that the ET-based method is easier to implement with less infrastructure, and it can result in similar yields compared to the soil moisture–based method. Although the fresh yield was 16% higher using the soil moisture–based method, grain yield can be sustained with the ET-based method using 8% less water. Selection of an appropriate irrigation scheduling method should be based on marketable yield: keeping the soil water content near field capacity will result in a higher fresh yield but will not translate into more dry matter. If grain yield is the target, the ET-based method is less expensive and more farmer friendly, but care should be taken to properly estimate irrigation losses to avoid underirrigation. An evaporative stress index (determined using sap flow measurements) of 70% will cause a 22% reduction in fresh sweet corn yield but only a 7% reduction in grain yield. Time-dependent response of piled raft foundations (PRFs) in saturated, normally consolidated and moderately overconsolidated clayey soils under the single-drainage condition is investigated using three-dimensional, elastoplastic finite-element (FE) analysis with the modified cam clay (MCC) soil constitutive model. Four different types of clay (Boston Blue Clay, San Francisco Bay Mud, London Clay, and Shanghai Clay) with different values of overconsolidation ratio (OCR) (OCR=1 , 2, and 5) and 20 different configurations of rectangular PRFs are considered for the study. The settlement response and load sharing of PRFs are investigated. Regression analyses are performed with the FE analysis results to obtain fitted equations for immediate settlement, primary consolidation settlement, and degree of consolidation of PRFs. These equations are applicable to PRFs with cast in situ bored piles similar in size to those considered in this study. Efficient utilization of problematic soils such as soft clay by imparting additional strength using various stabilization techniques is done to improve soil properties. The application of nanomaterials in the area of soil stabilization has great potential to create a stiff skeleton, especially when blended with cementitious materials. Using the response surface method, this study focused on studying the effects of single and blended cementitious systems, comprising cement (0% to 20%), slag (0% to 20%), and nanosilica (0% to 2.4%), on the properties of soft clay in wet conditions [water-to-soil ratio (w/s) of 53% to 87%]. The mechanical [California bearing ratio (CBR), unconfined compressive strength up to 91 days] and durability (freezing-thawing durability factor) properties of stabilized clay were investigated, and the bulk trends were corroborated by thermogravimetry and microscopy analyses. Based on statistical analysis, incremental addition of cement, slag, and nanosilica led to the systematic increase in the properties of soft clay, albeit to different extents and with different mechanisms. At the low w/s (53%), superior mechanical and durability properties were obtained for soft clay stabilized with the ternary binder comprising cement, slag, and nanosilica. Numerical optimization showed that stabilizing this weak type of soft/expansive clay is possible, but the results (proportions, performance, cost) varied based on the target design criteria and application. Desiccation cracking in clayey soil, which may lead to soil erosion, geotechnical engineering accidents, or even environmental pollution, is a serious problem nowadays. This research proposed a multifield coupling discrete-element model of clayey soil, in which each element represented a certain volume of soil. Meanwhile, the uneven distribution and transfer of moisture were also achieved. By establishing the relationships between water content and element radius, Young's modulus, and tensile strength, respectively, the model coupled the moisture field with the stress field. Through a discrete-element simulation of desiccation cracking in a thin clay layer, the gradual development of crack network was successfully reproduced, and the proposed model was validated. The uneven moisture distribution in the numerical specimen indicates that cracks can intensify evaporation by increasing the area of soil-air interface. Layer thickness, evaporation intensity, soil-base interaction, and compressive strength are proved to have significant impacts on crack pattern by influencing the equilibrium between desiccation shrinking and cracking. To estimate the cyclic shear-induced ground settlement of clay layers, cyclic simple shear tests were carried out on three normally consolidated clays with different plasticity. The pore water pressure accumulation during cyclic shear and the settlement at the postcyclic recompression stage were measured in tests with unidirectional and two-directional shearing, with different phase shifts between the shear strains applied in the two orthogonal directions and a wide range of shear strain amplitudes. All tests were performed with 200 cycles. In conclusion, firstly, the discrepancies of the pore water pressure accumulation and postcyclic settlement between unidirectional and two-directional cyclic shear were quantified, and the effects of cyclic shear direction on these properties were then described by the total length of strain path. The unconfined compressive strength (UCS) of soils is essential for both researchers and practitioner geotechnical engineers. UCS is well-understood and standardized for laboratory and field tests. Nevertheless, the large number of environmental and physical governing factors makes the reasonable prediction of UCS complicated. In this paper, a deep learning approach using the multilayer perceptron regressor (MLP) method along with the genetic expression programming (GEP) are used to assess nine variables that contribute to form a reflective multivariate formulation of the UCS. These variables include clay mineral percent (CF), specific gravity (Gs), dry unit weight (γd), saturated unit weight (γsat), natural unit weight (γt), moisture content (MC), void ratio (e), degree of saturation (S), and porosity (n). MLP and GEP are implemented to classify, correlate, rank, and reduce the number of variables that govern the UCS through the application of classification algorithms, importance analysis, interrelations and interdependency analysis of the variables, and functional indicators that shape the UCS. The changes of UCS in line with the variations of void ratio are analytically formulated according to both the critical state soil mechanics and the inverse proportionality between the voided area and soil strength. Moreover, the validity of the UCS principle is examined as opposed to the variation of the clay percent in the soil. Findings show that there shall be a breakpoint (clay percentage) after which the concept of UCS is radically changed due to the presence of a significant amount of frictional and drainable materials in the soil. The breakpoint appears to be centralized between 40% and 55%. The study is concluded by identifying the fundamental soil parameters, providing practical models to evaluate UCS, developing fundamental relationships between UCS and void ratio, and defining the breakpoint of clay content. Plastic clays in subgrade may cause major engineering defects such as excessive heave or settlement during the wet season that contribute to the formation of uneven geometry at the pavement surface. Soil stabilization is often a requisite to ameliorate the engineering properties of soft soils or reactive clays. This study investigates the application of nano-silica and nano-alumina to improve the California bearing ratio (CBR) of a local clay. The clay was treated with cement (2%–8%), with nano-additive (0.1%–1.5%) and with cement and nano-additive (3% cement + 0.1%–1.5% nano-additive). The compacted sample was cured for 7 days and subjected to soaked and unsoaked CBR tests. The soaked CBR of the nontreated clay increased by 49% and 27% for 1% nano-silica and 1% nano-alumina treated clay, respectively. Although 3% cement addition improved the CBR of the soaked clay by 28%, the combination of 3% cement with 1% nano-silica and nano-alumina resulted in 196% and 164% increase in the soaked CBR of the nontreated clay, respectively. The combination of nano-additives and cement yielded the same soaked CBR as if 6%–7% cement would have been used. Clay treated with 1% nano-silica and 3% cement achieved the highest CBR value within the tested samples and the sample treated with 1% nano-alumina and 3% cement achieved the lowest free swell potential. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM) micrographs of the treated clay showed the formation of uniform fabric with fewer pore spaces and calcium silicate hydrate (CSH)/calcium aluminate hydrate (CAH) products within the fabric of nano-additive treated clay. Dispersive clays are one of the common problematic soils owing to their unstable structure, which causes numerous geotechnical problems in construction projects. One of the main strategies to ameliorate these weak soils is to modify their mechanical properties with additives. Because little research about the influence of nanomaterials on the problematic soils' characteristics is available, this study aims to evaluate the effect of nanosilica on the mechanical, mineralogical, and microstructural behavior of dispersive clay. A series of experimental tests, including the pinhole, double-hydrometer, and crumb tests, is conducted to determine the dispersivity potential of the soil treated with nanosilica. The Atterberg limits, standard compaction, unconfined compression (UCS), and direct shear tests are also carried out. Additionally, mineralogy and the microstructure of the base soil and treated specimens were analyzed through X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). The results indicate that adding the optimum amount of 1% nanosilica to the dispersive clay altered the soil characteristic into nondispersive. The liquid limit (LL), plastic limit (PL), and optimum moisture content (OMC) of the treated soil specimens increased; nevertheless, the plasticity index (PI) and maximum dry density (MDD) decreased with the application of nanosilica. Remarkable improvement in UCS, absorbed energy, secant elastic modulus (E50), and the direct shear strength was achieved in the specimens treated with 1% nanosilica content after 7 and 28 days curing. Desiccation cracking in clayey soils occurs when they lose moisture, leading to an increase in their compressibility and hydraulic conductivity and hence a significant reduction of soil strength. The prediction of desiccation cracking in soils is challenging due to the lack of insights into the complex coupled hydromechanical process at the grain scale. In this paper, a new hybrid discrete-continuum numerical framework, capable of capturing hydromechanical behavior of soil at both grain-scale and macroscale, is proposed for predicting desiccation cracking in clayey soil. In this framework, a soil layer is represented by an assembly of discrete element method (DEM) particles, where each occupies an equivalent continuum space and carries physical properties governing unsaturated flow. These particles move freely in the computational space following the DEM, and their contact network and the continuum mixture theory are used to model the unsaturated flow. The dependence of particle-to-particle contact behavior on water content is represented by a cohesive-frictional contact model, whose material properties are governed by the water content. In parallel with the theoretical development is a series of experiments on three-dimensional (3D) soil desiccation cracking to determine essential properties and provide data for the validation of mechanical and physical behavior. Very good agreement in both physical behavior (e.g., evolution of water content) and mechanical behavior (e.g., occurrence and development of cracks, and distribution of compressive and tensile strains) demonstrates that the proposed framework is capable of capturing the hydromechanical behavior of soil during desiccation. The capability of the proposed framework facilitates numerical experiments for insights into the hydromechanical behavior of unsaturated soils that have not been possible before. Recent research on the topic of pile base resistance has demonstrated that the guidelines provided by existing design manuals and codes are rather conservative in the case of clayey soils under undrained conditions. With the aim of investigating this topic more rigorously, a computationally intensive study was carried out to quantify the effect of the soil rigidity index on the response of pile base resistance. A precise assessment of the results led to the formulation of hyperbolic relationships that capture the development of the base resistance as a function of settlement. The relationships were implemented in a beam column analysis and validated against a full axisymmetric numerical analysis and also with respect to field data from a pile test performed using an Osterberg cell near the pile base. The validation process demonstrated the usefulness of the method and recommendations arising with respect to mobilization of the pile base resistance. The curve number (CN) method is the most widely used method to estimate the depth of runoff resulting from a given depth of rainfall. However, there are still doubts about the effect of rainfall characteristics and soil moisture conditions on the method's parameters (CN, and the standard initial abstraction ratio, λ). In this study, design rainfall distributions were used along with Hortonian infiltration characteristics to calculate CN and λ values for a highly clayey soil (>80%). Prerainfall infiltration conditions were characterized by the measured initial soil moisture content, and Hortonian infiltration model was obtained from experimental infiltration test measurements. The main results show that there is no influence of initial infiltration rates on CN values, and rainfall duration generates substantial influence on CN. The CN is inversely related to rainfall depth, and λ is dependent on the initial soil moisture. Further, neither tabulated CN nor standard λ corresponds to the simulated values obtained in this case. The soil freezing curve (SFC) is a fundamental constitutive relationship between liquid water content and temperature under subzero (0°C or 273.15 K) conditions. SFC governs mechanical and hydrologic behavior of soil in freezing and thawing environments. The state-of-the-art SFC paradigms have been established empirically based on the capillary pressure-based Clapeyron equation. Two practical challenges prevent the rigorous use of the capillary pressure-based Clapeyron equation for realistic prediction of the SFC: (1) unable to use the governing pressure (intermolecular water pressure) for defining water phase change; and (2) unable to account for variations in latent heat of fusion and water density. A new paradigm based on soil sorptive potential (SSP) to predict the SFC from the soil water retention curve is developed, directly using the intermolecular water pressure distribution and pure water phase diagram in lieu of capillary pressure and the Clapeyron equation. The latest theory of SSP is used to quantify intermolecular water pressure distribution. Experimental validation demonstrates that the proposed paradigm yields excellent matches to the experimental SFC data for different soil types, and is a significant improvement over the predictions by the capillary pressure-based Clapeyron equation paradigm. The proposed paradigm reveals that the SFCs for various soils below 273.15 K (0°C) are mostly dominated by adsorptive water. Furthermore, the proposed paradigm can fully explain the practically encountered phenomenon that the SFC for soils with high clay content depends on the initial water content, whereas it does not for sandy soils. Practical significance of the new paradigm in geotechnical engineering problems is demonstrated through predicting soil moisture profiles under freezing and thawing, and permafrost environments. Soil suction–based analyses are paramount to proper design of foundations in expansive soils, yet availability of field soil suction profiles from direct measurement is limited. A method was developed, using directly measured suction profiles obtained from sites across the US, by which routine geotechnical tests can be used to estimate soil suction to expand the database for estimation of field suction profiles. Herein, the expanded database is used to develop best-estimate clay soil suction envelopes for boundary conditions associated with covered or uncovered ground surface subjected to natural climatic surface flux. Where appropriate for site conditions, the proposed soil suction profile envelopes can be used with any suction-based heave/shrinkage analysis. Key features of the field suction envelopes, consistent with current popular approaches, include climate-dependent estimates for equilibrium suction at depth, depth to equilibrium (stable) suction, and variation in soil suction at the ground surface. Comparisons to existing soil suction envelope recommendations are made. This paper describes key research on expansive soils and the methods employed to characterize them; fallacies in the current characterization of expansive soils are also explained. Novel swell characterization models that account for hydro, chemical, and mechanical behaviors of soils are introduced and used to demonstrate in case studies to improve expansive soil stabilization practices. The first two case studies present the results of expansive soils stabilized by incorporating clay mineralogy and soluble soil sulfate measurements. An innovative design method for successful stabilization of expansive soil is introduced in the first case study, which incorporated both basic clay mineralogy and unsaturated soil behaviors as well as performance-based durability studies. Sulfate soil stabilization works on medium-to-high sulfate soils, including rigorous laboratory and field validation studies, are presented in the second case study. The third case study, which involves a steep earthen embankment built with expansive clayey soils and experiencing recurring surficial slope failures and maintenance issues, is also discussed. Forensic studies explaining the causes of slope failures and their mitigation methods are also included. All case studies reveal the need for detailed data about soil chemistry, including clay mineralogy and sulfate studies, to improve the current field stabilization and infrastructure design on expansive soils. The last section summarizes recent innovations for better health monitoring and management of civil infrastructure built on expansive soils using unmanned aerial vehicle platforms and visualization tools, which will be valuable for validating the application of new materials, designs, and construction processes. A novel statistical framework was developed to quantify the variability of the fitting parameters of the soil–water characteristic curve (SWCC). Reliable estimation of the mean, standard deviation, and associated probability density function (PDF) of the fitting parameters of SWCC is an important tool for addressing reliability-based designs in unsaturated soil mechanics. The assumption of either Gaussian or lognormal distributions may not be valid for representing a high degree of variability associated with fitting parameters. This study aimed to provide the most appropriate continuous PDFs by optimizing the mean and standard deviation such that errors associated with quantile, percentile, and cumulative distribution function (CDF) were as low as possible. A total of 261 and 111 sample points were collected from the most comprehensive experimental works on the fitting parameters of SWCC for clayey and silty soils, respectively. Optimum distributions suitable to the model fitting parameters of SWCC are highly dependent on the type of soil. The most appropriate PDFs for representing the fitting parameters af , nf , and mf of Fredlund and Xing's model were gamma, Weibull, and inverse Gaussian distributions, respectively. Similarly, fitting parameters af , nf , and mf for silty soils were represented by inverse Gaussian, Gumbel maximum, and Gumbel maximum distributions, respectively. This study found that the selection of inappropriate PDFs overestimated the probability of failure of unsaturated infinite slopes considerably, by 99.49% and 99.76%, respectively, for clayey and silty soils. Recommended mean, coefficient of variation (COV), and PDF are useful in the reliability-based design of unsaturated soil slopes and in judging the performance of existing infinite and finite slopes. The physical and mechanical behavior of soil polymer composites tightly depends on the properties and structures of both soil and polymer. This study aims to investigate the effect of glass transition temperature as one of the most important characteristics of adhesive resins of acrylic polymers on the geotechnical behavior of soils that have not been fully covered by previous studies. To achieve that, three similar copolymers of methyl methacrylate-co-butyl acrylate with different glass-transition temperatures of 1°C, 33°C, and 51°C were synthesized, and two representative specimens of cohesive (kaolinite clay) and noncohesive (sand) soils were chosen to perform a full investigation of the consequential changes in the physical and mechanical behavior. A series of laboratory tests, including the Atterberg limits tests, the unconfined compressive strength tests, direct shear tests in soaked and unsoaked conditions, swelling tests, and odometer tests, were conducted on untreated and treated soils with synthesized polymers. The results showed a salient enhancement in the cohesion and the unconfined compressive strength value of both soils. However, the polymer with a glass-transition temperature near to ambient temperature led to a greater increase in the compressive and shear strength of stabilized soil among its peers. Samples treated with the polymer having the lowest glass transition temperature revealed a more compression index (i.e., obtained from odometer tests) and lower unconfined compressive strength. A change in temperature induces thermo-osmosis (T-O) and thermofiltration (T-F) effects in soils, which can influence consolidation under certain conditions. Whether such conditions are met is not always known a priori. Therefore, this paper first develops a coupled model to assess these effects on the thermohydromechanical coupled behavior of saturated soils. The proposed model, which incorporates the extended Darcy's law and Fourier's law, is implemented in the finite-element method (FEM) solver OpenGeoSys version 6.3.3. To determine when T-O/T-F effects become relevant in an analysis, two characteristic numbers are then derived from the extended governing equations, which can be directly expressed by readily available soil and water parameters. Both theoretical and numerical analyses were conducted, and the results indicate that the T-F effect has little influence on heat transfer in typical soils, while the T-O effect appears to be significant for both sandy and clayey soils, provided the T-O coefficient exceeds 4.3 × 10-12 m²=ðs · KÞ. The T-O effect could even lead to the development of negative excess pore water pressure (PWP) and, consequently, soil compression, with relevance for the stability of geotechnical facilities subjected to temperature gradients. It is thus inferred that the T-O coefficient should be measured in conjunction with related necessary experimental work, in addition to soil permeability, to determine whether the T-O effect should be treated with caution. Many techniques, most notably soil stabilization, have been developed to enhance soil characteristics due to the growing trend of constructing structures on clayey soils. Therefore, it is imperative that researchers address clay-related issues utilizing geotechnical engineering achievements. This study evaluated the effect of volcanic ash (tuff) as a natural pozzolan on the improvement of cement performance in the clay stabilization. Various compositions of cement (0%–6% by dry mass) and tuff (0%–20% by dry mass) were added to clay and cured for 7 and 28 days. Then a set of tests, including modified Proctor, Atterberg limits, electrical conductivity (EC), pH, unconstrained compressive strength (UCS), California bearing ratio (CBR), wet-dry durability, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analyses, were performed on the untreated and treated samples. The secant modulus (E50) was measured to evaluate the stiffness of the specimens. The data showed that the incorporation of tuff into the studied cement-stabilized clay considerably enhanced the mixture mechanical properties and substantially reduced the plasticity index of the samples. After a 28-day period, the samples containing 6% cement and 15% tuff, as the optimum mixture, had increases of the UCS and CBR values of approximately twice those containing 6% cement. Moreover, the inclusion of tuff into the cement–soil blends increased the durability of the samples. According to the SEM and XRD analysis, the addition of tuff to the samples containing cement caused the formation of more cementitious compounds and fully changed the soil structure.
