Growth‐to‐standard models evaluate student growth against the growth needed to reach a future standard or target of interest, such as proficiency. A common growth‐to‐standard model involves comparing the popular Student Growth Percentile (SGP) to Adequate Growth Percentiles (AGPs). AGPs follow from an involved process based on fitting a series of nonlinear quantile regression models to longitudinal student test score data. This paper demystifies AGPs by deriving them in the more familiar linear regression framework. It further shows that unlike SGPs, AGPs and on‐track classifications based on AGPs are strongly related to status. Lastly, AGPs are evaluated in terms of their classification accuracy. An empirical study and analytic derivations reveal AGPs can be problematic indicators of students’ future performance with previously not proficient students being more likely incorrectly flagged as not on‐track and previously proficient students as on track. Most of the scientific research is focused on KOH-based alkaline electrolysers, while NaOH-based ones are unexplored although they present interesting features. This paper presents a semi-empirical model developed in the Python environment to predict a NaOH-based alkaline electrolyser's performance to cover such a research gap and perform an optimisation procedure of electrochemical parameters. A sensitivity analysis has been carried out to study how its performance changes while varying the: i) NaOH content, ii) pressure, and iii) both. Separately, the best result has been obtained with a NaOH content and an operating pressure of 8% and 6.5 bar, respectively. Furthermore, the same values have been recorded even by varying both the NaOH content and the operating pressure. Specifically, a maximum average efficiency increase of 3.57% at 35 ° C , 0.17% at 40 ° C , and 3.74% at 35 ° C in the case of NaOH content, pressure, and both, respectively. Tensile perpendicular to grain is an important mechanical property in the design of joints in timber structures. However, according to the standards, this strength can be determined using at least two different methods: uniaxial tensile and three-point static bending. In this context, the present paper aims to investigate the influence of these test methods on the determination of tensile strength perpendicular to grain of wood used in civil construction timber. Three wood species from Brazilian planted forests (Pinus spp., Eucalyptus saligna, and Corymbia citriodora) were used in this investigation. Twelve specimens of each species were used for each test method investigated. Moreover, a statistical analysis was performed to propose an adjustment to the equation of the Code of International Organization for Standardization 13910:2014 for the three-point bending test. Tensile strength values perpendicular to grain obtained from the uniaxial tensile test were significantly higher than those determined by the three-point bending test. It is proposed that the tensile strength perpendicular to grain can be determined more precisely with adoption of coefficient 5.233 in the term [(3.75·Fult)/b·Lh] of the equation specified by the Code of International Organization for Standardization 13910:2014 for the three-point bending test. A nonlinear log-Birnbaum–Saunders regression model with additive errors is introduced. It is assumed that the error term follows a flexible sinh-normal distribution, and therefore it can be used to describe a variety of asymmetric, unimodal, and bimodal situations. This is a novelty since there are few papers dealing with nonlinear models with asymmetric errors and, even more, there are few able to fit a bimodal behavior. Influence diagnostics and martingale-type residuals are proposed to assess the effect of minor perturbations on the parameter estimates, check the fitted model, and detect possible outliers. A simulation study for the Michaelis–Menten model is carried out, covering a wide range of situations for the parameters. This paper derives a general Bartlett correction formula to improve the inference based on the likelihood ratio test in a multivariate model under a quite general parameterization, where the mean vector and the variance-covariance matrix can share the same vector of parameters. This approach includes a number of models as special cases such as non-linear regression models, errors-in-variables models, mixed-effects models with non-linear fixed effects, and mixtures of the previous models. We also employ the Skovgaard adjustment to the likelihood ratio statistic in this class of multivariate models and derive a general expression of the correction factor based on Skovgaard approach. Monte Carlo simulation experiments are carried out to verify the performance of the improved tests, and the numerical results confirm that the modified tests are more reliable than the usual likelihood ratio test. In this paper, we have introduced a functional approach for approximating nonparametric functions and coefficients in the presence of multivariate and functional predictors. By utilizing the Fisher scoring algorithm and the cross-validation technique, we derived the necessary components that allow us to explain scalar responses, including the functional index, the nonlinear regression operator, the single-index component, and the systematic component. This approach effectively addresses the curse of dimensionality and can be applied to the analysis of multivariate and functional random variables in a separable Hilbert space. We employed an iterative Fisher scoring procedure with normalized B-splines to estimate the parameters, and both the theoretical and practical evaluations demonstrated its favorable performance. The results indicate that the nonparametric functions, the coefficients, and the regression operators can be estimated accurately, and our method exhibits strong predictive capabilities when applied to real or simulated data. The thermal decomposition and sintering kinetics of microfine magnesite were investigated to inaugurate a new One-step process for preparing high-density sintered magnesia. The optimal parameters for the discharging particle size of magnesite through ball milling were determined using an orthogonal experiment and Three-Way Measures ANOVA. The model for the thermal decomposition process of microfine magnesite was established through TGA-DSC and nonlinear regression analysis. Meanwhile, by describing the sintering process of microfine magnesite in detail through microstructure and CTE, the kinetic mechanisms of grain growth at different sintering stages were obtained. The results revealed that increasing the ratio of ball to powder can quickly obtain microfine magnesite which the bulk density reaches 3.45 g·cm−3 after One-step sintering. The thermal decomposition process required an activation energy of only 124.98 kJ·mol−1, which is much lower than existing technology and followed the Two-dimensional phase boundary reaction mechanism R 2. Additionally, the densification process was dominated alternatively by grain boundary diffusion and volume diffusion. Optimizing structural designs is crucial today, with additive manufacturing, particularly selective laser melting, gaining prominence. Thorough mechanical characterization of new materials remains vital. This paper investigates fatigue crack growth behavior in SLM 316L specimens under cyclic loading conditions. The study addresses result uncertainties by using CT specimens aligned along three building directions per ASTM E647 standards and a constant loading ratio (R = 0.1), necessitating mean value and confidence interval predictions. Departing from linear prediction models, innovative Bootstrap Polynomial and Power Regression Models and Bayesian Nonlinear Regression Model updated posterior distribution by Markov Chain Monte Carlo are employed. These approaches leverage bootstrapping to construct confidence intervals, offering robustness and flexibility in handling non‐normal data behavior and limited sample sizes. They provide tailored fits to data curvature, revealing limitations of linear prediction models in capturing observed nonlinear behavior, enhancing reliability in additive manufacturing applications, and advancing material science and engineering. The paper considers the problem of nonparametric estimation of nonlinear characteristic in the FIR Wiener system. Methods proposed so far have suffered from the so-called 'curse of dimensionality' and their practical applications have been limited to the very short impulse responses of the linear component. In the proposed approach, the class of (stochastically initialised) repeated exponential input excitations is introduced, and a modified kernel-based estimator is presented. It is shown that the rate of convergence to the genuine system characteristic is significantly improved and does not depend on the length of the impulse response of the linear dynamic block. The incorporation of conformal cooling systems has significantly enhanced the efficiency and quality of injection molding process. While several automated methods have been developed for creating conformal cooling channels in injection molds, the current optimization process for conformal cooling design parameters is hindered by labor-intensive iterative thermal simulation processes and the substantial reliance on empirical human knowledge. This paper presents an innovative machine learning method to assess the thermal performance of conformal cooling systems by employing a combination of a non-linear regression model and a neural network. By employing a logarithmic regression model describing the temperature graph and a neural network predicting the coefficients of the logarithmic regression model, the thermal performance of specified conformal cooling systems can be assessed and predicted precisely. This methodology empowers designers to evaluate the thermal efficiency of conformal cooling systems efficiently and effectively to further optimize the conformal cooling design parameters without relying on tedious manual thermal and fluid simulation processes. The Earth's climate is a complex system that can be influenced by various internal and external factors. Previous research has explored the relationship between climate and external forcings such as solar activity and GCR. However, the relations are intricate and intertwined into almost chaotic meteorological measurements. This paper delves deeper into understanding their interactions. GCR flux, Sunspot number (SSN), total solar irradiance (TSI), UV irradiance (UVI), and the Oceanic Niño Index (ONI) are the predictor variables, while total cloud amount (TCA) and low cloud amount (LCA) are the response variables. The analysis begins with standard statistical techniques and continues with multiple regression models including random forest, which is a machine learning (ML) method that can be used for non-linear regression. Subsequently, Recursive Feature Elimination (RFE) is employed to scrutinize the correlation among the predictor parameters. In the ML model, the final 25% of the dataset is held out and tested for validation, so, the predictive power of the algorithm is measured. Both geographical and temporal patterns have been investigated. Kernel methods are popular in nonlinear and nonparametric regression due to their solid mathematical foundations and optimal statistical properties. However, scalability remains the primary bottleneck in applying kernel methods to large-scale data regression analysis. This paper aims to improve the scalability of kernel methods. We combine Nyström subsampling and the preconditioned conjugate gradient method to solve regularized kernel regression. Our theoretical analysis indicates that achieving optimal convergence rates requires only (n) memory and (n n) time (up to logarithmic factors). Numerical experiments show that our algorithm outperforms existing methods in time efficiency and prediction accuracy on large-scale datasets. Notably, compared to the FALKON algorithm [A. Rudi, L. Carratino and L. Rosasco, Falkon: An optimal large scale kernel method, in Advances in Neural Information Processing Systems (Curran Associates, 2017), pp. 3891–3901], which is known as the optimal large-scale kernel method, our method is more flexible (applicable to non-positive definite kernel functions) and has a lower algorithmic complexity. This paper proposes methods for Machine Learning (ML)-based Beam Alignment (BA), using low-complexity ML models, and achieves a small pilot overhead. We assume a single-user massive mmWave MIMO, Uplink, using a fully analog architecture. Assuming large-dimension codebooks of possible beam patterns at  U E  and  B S , this data-driven and model-based approach aims to partially and blindly sound a small subset of beams from these codebooks. The proposed BA is blind (no CSI), based on Received Signal Energies (RSEs), and circumvents the need for exhaustively sounding all possible beams. A sub-sampled subset of beams is then used to train several ML models such as low-rank Matrix Factorization (MF), non-negative MF (NMF), and shallow Multi-Layer Perceptron (MLP). We provide an extensive mathematical description of these models and the algorithms for each of them. Our extensive numerical results show that, by sounding only  10 %  of the beams from the  U E  and  B S  codebooks, the proposed ML tools are able to accurately predict the non-sounded beams through multiple transmitted power regimes. The finite element limit analysis solution presented in this paper offers novel approaches for estimating the ultimate bearing capacity of annular foundations on Hoek–Brown criterion. The study examines the effects of five of dimensionless parameters, including the ratio of internal to external radii, the depth ratio, the adhesive factor, the yield parameter, and the geological strength index, on the findings of bearing capacity as well as the processes of collapse. Furthermore, one of the soft-computing regression methodologies, the multi-objective evolutionary polynomial regression analysis (MOGA-EPR) method, is utilized along with the requirement of the FELA outcomes as input data. This paper provides accurate limit-state predictions for annular footings on diverse rock masses using the MOGA-EPR model. By using the MOGA-EPR approach, the findings are highly precise and trustworthy, empowering designers to choose the best annular foundation design for various Hoek–Brown material varieties. Moreover, this study extends its scope by encompassing the application of multiple linear regression, multiple nonlinear regression, and artificial neural network models for an extensive comparative analysis. The amalgamation of these models widens the evaluative framework, fostering a more comprehensive exploration of predictive capabilities and insights into the stability assessment of annular footings across rock mass conditions. Buried pipelines, as the most common method of natural gas transportation, are prone to pipeline leakage accidents and are difficult to detect due to their harsh and concealed environment. This paper focused on the problem regarding the free dissipation of residual gas in buried gas pipelines and soil after closing the gas supply end valve after a period of leakage by numerical simulation. A multiple non-linear regression model was established based on the least squares method and multiple regression theory, and MATLAB 2016b mathematical calculation software was used to solve the problem. The research results indicated that compared to the gas leakage diffusion stage, the pressure and velocity distribution during the free dissipation stage were significantly reduced. The increase in leakage time, pipeline pressure, leakage size, and pipeline burial depth led to a large accumulation of natural gas, which increased the concentration and distribution range of gas on the same free dissipation stage monitoring line. A prediction model for natural gas concentration in the free dissipation stage was established with an average error of 7.88%. A calculation model for the safety repair time of buried gas pipeline leakage accidents was further derived to determine the safety repair time of leakage accidents. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study investigates the impact mechanism of the government's strategic leadership (SL) and environmental optimisation (EO) on the improvement of regional innovation performance (RIP) under the effects of the regional innovation system coupling synergy degree (RISCSD). Based on the nonlinear threshold regression model, the coupling synergy model and entropy value method, the threshold regression analysis is conducted by calculating the RISCSD. The results indicate that: under the effect of the RISCSD, the SL, EO, and RIP have distinct single and double threshold effects. With the improvement of RISCSD, the influence of SL on RIP has changed from inhibition to promotion; while the promotion effect of EO on RIP shows an upward trend at first, and then slightly weakening. Most anthropogenic carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions originate from urban areas. To improve understandings of urban and regional emissions, we design and construct a low-cost UAV coordinated carbon observation network (LUCCN) which uses mid-accuracy (±1 ppm) CO2 sensors. In this paper, we introduce our multi-variable non-linear regression method for calibrating the non-dispersive infrared (NDIR) CO2 sensors for LUCCN's ground stations. We tested our calibration method with concentration data collected at the Xinglong Atmospheric Background Observatory. With comparison against data simultaneously collected by a high-accuracy cavity ring-down spectrometer, we found the maximum standard deviation of LUCCN's sensors to be 0.782 ppm in a controlled laboratory environment with a 1-second window size and 0.53 ppm in an outdoor environment with a 1-hour running average window size. As validation of LUCCN's ground measurements, we identify and present consistent trends between local CO2 concentration variations and aerosol pollution events captured by the space-based moderate resolution imaging spectrometer (MODIS). The recent energy crisis has renewed interest in forecasting crude oil prices. This paper focuses on identifying the main drivers determining the evolution of crude oil prices and proposes a statistical learning forecasting algorithm based on regression analysis that can be used to generate future oil price scenarios. A combination of a generalized additive model with a linear transfer function with ARIMA noise is used to capture the existence of combinations of non-linear and linear relationships between selected input variables and the crude oil price. The results demonstrate that the physical market balance or fundamental is the most important metric in explaining the evolution of oil prices. The effect of the trading activity and volatility variables are significant under abnormal market conditions. We show that forecast accuracy under the proposed model supersedes benchmark specifications, including the futures prices and analysts' forecasts. Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to apply and verify Fourier series analysis in combination with non-linear regression as a tool of forecasting and planning of inputs in the logistics process of a retail chain store. Design/methodology/approach: For many popular products, a significant effect of seasonality of sales is expected; therefore, the method of Fourier series was chosen as one of the main forecast calculation techniques. However, the use of this method directly for forecasting sales has a limitation in the form of a complete reconstruction of the shape of the curve from of the given monitored time. Thus, the forecast is based only on the significant harmonic components from the Fourier series analysis that will participate in forecast forming. In addition, to respect the trend of series, the results of Fourier series analysis are combined with the non-linear regression. Findings: The results showed that the number of significant harmonic components from the Fourier series analysis is suitable to reflect the future behaviour of the sale in standard market conditions. Forecasting of the sale and accurate purchase planning of goods has a positive effect on reducing the waste of unsold products after their shelf and on increasing of a customer satisfaction. Research limitations/implications: This study has an application in a certain period of time (relatively calm behaviour of the food market) and only for a certain region. Therefore, it is not possible to generalize these results as the behaviour of consumers, e.g. within the state. It will also be interesting to monitor and forecast sales of other food items. Practical implications: This provides a practical and relatively simple tool for implementing or improving the process of forecasting seasonally dependent products in the food industry. Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to explain the effects of innovation, specialisation, qualifications and sectoral structure on the resilience of German regions (municipal level) facing the Great Recession in 2008/2009. Design/methodology/approach: To calculate the effects of various variables on the resilience of German regions against the Great Recession, the authors use quantile regressions. To measure resilience, the authors create a number of indexes representing different parts of the economy: resistance performance index, recovery performance index, shift-share resistance index, shift-share recovery index, manufacturing resistance index, manufacturing recovery index, service resistance index and service recovery index. Findings: The results of this study confirm that locations with employment growth before the crisis and with a good industry structure show better employment dynamics during and after the crisis. The authors find evidence for positive relationship between innovativeness, qualification, the share of the service sector, specialisation and resistance. The authors obtain positive results for related variety and both resistance and recovery. The share of the manufacturing sector only shows a positive relationship with recovery. Originality/value: The authors expand the existing literature in three aspects: First, instead of using regions as observation units, the authors conduct the analyses on the basis of municipalities and their surroundings. By doing so, the authors reduce the modifiable area unit problem because the authors do not rely on regions defined for administrative reasons. Second, the authors apply quantile regressions to detect nonlinear effects. Third, in addition to the resilience of the whole economy, the authors also study the resilience of the manufacturing and service sectors separately and examine the resilience of the local shift effect. Purpose: This paper aims to employ a multivariate nonlinear regression analysis to establish a predictive model for the final fracture area, while accounting for the impact of individual parameters. Design/methodology/approach: This analysis is based on the numerical simulation data obtained, using the hybrid finite element–discrete element (FE–DE) method. The forecasting model was compared with the numerical results and the accuracy of the model was evaluated by the root mean square (RMS) and the RMS error, the mean absolute error and the mean absolute percentage error. Findings: The multivariate nonlinear regression model can accurately predict the nonlinear relationships between injection rate, leakoff coefficient, elastic modulus, permeability, Poisson's ratio, pore pressure and final fracture area. The regression equations obtained from the Newton iteration of the least squares method are strong in terms of the fit to the six sensitive parameters, and the model follow essentially the same trend with the numerical simulation data, with no systematic divergence detected. Least absolutely deviation has a significantly weaker performance than the least squares method. The percentage contribution of sensitive parameters to the final fracture area is available from the simulation results and forecast model. Injection rate, leakoff coefficient, permeability, elastic modulus, pore pressure and Poisson's ratio contribute 43.4%, −19.4%, 24.8%, −19.2%, −21.3% and 10.1% to the final fracture area, respectively, as they increased gradually. In summary, (1) the fluid injection rate has the greatest influence on the final fracture area. (2)The multivariate nonlinear regression equation was optimally obtained after 59 iterations of the least squares-based Newton method and 27 derivative evaluations, with a decidability coefficient R2 = 0.711 representing the model reliability and the regression equations fit the four parameters of leakoff coefficient, permeability, elastic modulus and pore pressure very satisfactorily. The models follow essentially the identical trend with the numerical simulation data and there is no systematic divergence. The least absolute deviation has a significantly weaker fit than the least squares method. (3)The nonlinear forecasting model of physical parameters of hydraulic fracturing established in this paper can be applied as a standard for optimizing the fracturing strategy and predicting the fracturing efficiency in situ field and numerical simulation. The paper is devoted to the formal description of the running time of the user task on some virtual nodes in the computing network. Based on the probability theory framework, this time represents a random value with a finite mean and variance. For any class of user task, these moments are the functions of the node resources, task numerical characteristics, and the parameters of the current node state. These functions of the vector arguments can be treated as some surfaces in the multidimensional Euclidean spaces, so the proposed models are called the stochastic time complexity surfaces. The paper also presents a class of functions suitable for the description of both the mean and variance. They contain unknown parameters which should be estimated. The article includes the statement of the parameter identification problem given the statistical results of the node stress testing, recommendations concerning the test planning, and preprocessing of the raw experiment data. To illustrate the performance of the proposed model, the authors design it for an actual database application—the prototype of the passengers' personal data anonymization system. Its application functions are classified into two user task classes: the data anonymization procedures and fulfillment of the statistical queries. The use of a 3D range scanning device for autonomous object description or unknown environment mapping leads to the necessity of improving computer methods based on identical point pairs from different point clouds (so-called registration problem). The registration problem and three-dimensional transformation of coordinates still require further research. The paper attempts to guide the reader through the vast field of existing registration methods so that he can choose the appropriate approach for his particular problem. Furthermore, the article contains a regression method that enables the estimation of the covariance matrix of the transformation parameters and the calculation of the uncertainty of the estimated points. This makes it possible to extend existing registration methods with uncertainty estimates and to improve knowledge about the performed registration. The paper's primary purpose is to present a survey of known methods and basic estimation theory concepts for the point cloud registration problem. The shear behaviour of fibre-reinforced polymer reinforced concrete (FRP-RC) beams without web reinforcement suffers from low strength, low stiffness, more brittleness and wide and quick propagated cracks. Fortunately, the addition of various types of fibres could improve most of these weaknesses. On the other hand, the shear strength prediction of FRP-RC beams with various types of fibres is one of the most complex cases in structural engineering applications. Developing generalised, precise and consistent prediction models are necessary and very limited. This paper investigates the impacts of various types of fibres on shear strength and presents proposing four new prediction models, utilising artificial neural networks and empirical nonlinear regression analysis, and modifying the combination of available models based on a collected database of 49 shear test results of FRP-RC members with various types of fibres. The comparison of the developed models with the available equations from the literature indicates that the developed models yielded excellent performance, great efficiency and a high level of accuracy over all other existing models. Additionally, the parametric study confirmed that all the developed models have great abilities to accurately predict the actual response of each parameter, in spite of its complexity, on the shear strength of FRP-reinforced fibrous concrete beams without stirrups. The Linear Hinges Model (LHM) is an efficient approach to flexible and robust one-dimensional curve fitting under stringent high-noise conditions. However, it was initially designed to run in a single-core processor, accessing the whole input dataset. The surge in data volumes, coupled with the increase in parallel hardware architectures and specialised frameworks, has led to a growth in interest and a need for new algorithms able to deal with large-scale datasets and techniques to adapt traditional machine learning algorithms to this new paradigm. This paper presents several ensemble alternatives, based on model selection and combination, that allow for obtaining a continuous piecewise linear regression model from large-scale datasets using the learning algorithm of the LHM. Our empirical tests have proved that model combination outperforms model selection and that these methods can provide better results in terms of bias, variance, and execution time than the original algorithm executed over the entire dataset. Empirical and probabilistic risk analysis methods can relatively accurately predict the seismic vulnerability of reinforced concrete (RC) structures. Using various intensity measures to estimate and forecast the seismic hazard of RC structures can contribute to the development of typical structural seismic resilience and vulnerability models. However, traditional empirical and analytical vulnerability studies rely more on field observation data and seismic risk algorithms and less on numerical simulation analysis for validation and optimization, resulting in limitations and fuzziness in the accuracy of the developed structural risk models. To explore the damage modes of RC frame structures under different intensities, this paper innovatively combines numerical model algorithms with empirical vulnerability methods to conduct empirical vulnerability and numerical simulation analyses on RC structures. Using probability statistics and nonlinear regression analysis methods, a prediction model for estimating the fragility of RC structures was proposed, and 858 RC structure damage samples from a typical city (Dujiangyan) during the Wenchuan earthquake in China on May 12, 2008, were used for model verification and comparative analysis. Using seismic response analysis theory, 901,530 acceleration records of the Wenchuan earthquake detected by eight actual seismic stations were selected, and nonlinear dynamic time history analysis was conducted. A four-story RC structural model was established using finite element software, and numerical simulation analysis was conducted on the model using 117,863 real earthquake acceleration data points obtained from actual monitoring stations during the Wenchuan earthquake. The acceleration time history curves and incremental dynamic analysis curves of the RC structure under different intensity measures were generated. By combining the moire algorithm and numerical simulation technology, damage stress clouds of steel bars and concrete under different intensity measures were generated, and the accuracy of the developed empirical vulnerability model was verified via numerical simulation results. Multicollinearity among independent variables is one of the most common problems in regression models. The aftereffects of this problem, such as ill-conditioning, instability of estimators, and inflating mean squared error of ordinary least squares estimator (OLS), in the multivariate linear regression model (MLRM) are the same that of linear regression models. To combat multicollinearity, several approaches have been presented in the literature. Liu estimator (LE), as a well known estimator in this connection, has been used in linear, generalized linear, and nonlinear regression models by researchers in recent years. In this paper, for the first time, LE and jackknifed Liu estimator (JLE) are investigated in MLRM. To improve estimators in the sense of mean squared error, two known resampling methods, i.e., jackknife and bootstrap, are used. Ocean sound speed is important for underwater acoustic applications, such as communications, navigation and localization, where the assumption of uniformly distributed sound speed profiles (SSPs) is generally used and greatly degrades the performance of underwater acoustic systems. The acquisition of SSPs is necessary for the corrections of the sound ray propagation paths. However, the inversion of SSPs is challenging due to the intricate relations of interrelated physical ocean elements and suffers from the high costs of calculations and hardware deployments. This paper proposes a novel sound speed inversion method based on multi-source ocean remote sensing observations and machine learning, which adapts to large-scale sea regions. Firstly, the datasets of SSPs are generated utilizing the Argo thermohaline profiles and the empirical formulas of the sound speed. Then, the SSPs are analyzed utilizing the empirical orthogonal functions (EOFs) to reduce the dimensions of the feature space as well as the computational load. Considering the nonlinear regression relations of SSPs and the observed datasets, a general framework for sound speed inversion is formulated, which combines the designed machine learning models with the reduced-dimensional feature representations, multi-source ocean remote sensing observations and water temperature data. After being well trained, the proposed machine learning models realize the accurate inversion of the targeted ocean region by inputting the real-time ocean environmental data. This paper considers nonlinear regression models when neither the response variable nor the covariates can be directly observed, but are measured with exponential parametric distortion measurement errors. To estimate parameters in the distortion functions, we propose nonlinear least squares and weighted nonlinear least squares estimation methods under two identifiability conditions. After obtaining calibrated variables, the nonlinear least squares based estimators are proposed to estimate the parameters in the regression model. We studied the asymptotic results of estimators, especially we discuss the difference between the parametric calibrations and nonparametric calibrations. Flyrock is one of the major safety hazards induced by blasting operations. However, few studies were for predicting blasting-induced flyrock distance from the perspective of engineers. The present paper attempts to provide an engineer-friendly equation predicting blasting-induced flyrock distance. Data used in the present study contains s seven blasting parameters including borehole diameter, blasthole length, powder factor, stemming length, maximum charge per delay, burden, and flyrock distance is obtained. Data is inputted into Random Forest for feature selection. The selected features are formulated as two candidate equations, including Multiple Linear Regression (MLR) equation and Multiple Nonlinear Regression (MNR) equation. Those two candidates are respectively referred by Particle Swarm Optimization for searching optimum values for the coefficients of selected features. It is proved that MLR equation has better accuracy. MLR equation is compared with two empirical equations and the MLR equation based on least squares method. It is found that the coefficient of correlation of the proposed MLR equation reaches 0.918, which is the highest compared with the scores of other three equations. The present study utilizes feature selection process to screen inputs, which effectively excludes irrelevant parameters from being considered. The objective this paper is determine the highest performance of fresh mass and number of fruits in tomato crops using different nutrient solution. An absolute hybrid with a semi-determined growth was used. It was grown in a protected environment using a fertigated substrate inside plastic bags containing ten liters of solution. The experiment was completely randomized with four levels of fertilization and five replications. Two experiments were carried out in two cultivation cycles (spring 2018 and autumn 2019) by performing an analysis of variance and Scott & Knott test and estimating the parameters of nonlinear logistic model and its critical points for both variables in each treatment. The mean fruit mass per plant was 3.70 kg for the spring experiment and 3.80 kg for the autumn experiment. The mean number of fruits per plant was 10.50 and 10.70 fruits for spring and autumn, respectively. There are significant differences between the treatments KO46, KO45 and KO56 compared to KO69 for fruit mass in the autumn experiment. For the other variables and cultivation cycles, the treatments did not show statistical differences. The logistic growth model fitted the weight and number of tomato fruits according to days after transplanting the seedlings and evidenced production cycle data, highlighting the main differences between the nutrient solutions. The nutritional solutions KO46, KO45 and KO56 are recommended for growing Gaúcho tomatoes in substrate. The nutrient solution KO56 has the best performance because it has a higher K availability, meets the balance of loads and antagonism between nutrients, provides equal response of means mass and number of fruits, and has a lower N:K ratio and balance of K over Ca and Mg, thus favoring fruit production, precocity, and development. Colorimetric characterization is the basis of color information management in color imaging systems. In this paper, we propose a colorimetric characterization method based on kernel partial least squares (KPLS) for color imaging systems. This method takes the kernel function expansion of the three-channel response values (RGB) in the device-dependent space of the imaging system as input feature vectors, and CIE-1931 XYZ as output vectors. We first establish a KPLS color-characterization model for color imaging systems. Then we determine the hyperparameters based on nested cross validation and grid search; a color space transformation model is realized. The proposed model is validated with experiments. The CIELAB, CIELUV and CIEDE2000 color differences are used as evaluation metrics. The results of the nested cross validation test for the ColorChecker SG chart show that the proposed model is superior to the weighted nonlinear regression model and the neural network model. Conventional convergence analysis on mini-batch learning is usually based on the stochastic gradient concept, in which we assume that the training data are presented in a random order. Also, some convergence results require that the learning rate should decrease with the number of training cycles, and that the objective function is a smooth function. Practically speaking, a deterministic presentation scheme with a fixed learning rate is more preferable. Hence, there is a gap between theoretical results and actual implementation. This paper aims at filling the gap. We use the radial basis function (RBF) model for nonlinear regression problems as an example to analyze the convergence properties of mini-batch learning. This paper considers a nonsmooth objective function, which consists of three terms. The coexistence of these three terms is able to handle a number of situations. The first term is a conventional training set error. The second term is a quadratic term which is used to suppress the effect of imperfections in the implementation. The last term is an ℓ 1 -norm term which is used to select important RBF nodes for the resultant network. Note that the ℓ 1 -norm term is a nonsmooth function. Although a nonsmooth ℓ 1 -norm is included and the mini-batch algorithm is deterministic, we are still able to derive the convergence properties, including the sufficient conditions for convergence and range of learning rate. With our results, we have a better theoretical understanding on the behaviour of mini-batch learning and obtain some guidelines on choosing the learning rate. Given the current maturity of hydrogen technologies, accurate and computationally efficient numerical models are crucial for improving their understanding and development. Traditional models are either computationally prohibitive or lack the capacity to assess the spatial distribution of critical variables. The present paper suggests a hybrid numerical model for Fuel Cells (FCs) and electrolysers, articulating the coupling between a 1D analytical model and a Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) model via a nonlinear regression. Results present an initial validation of the 1D analytical model and the CFD model, and, once the validation is proven successful, the hybrid model is evaluated with a relatively long and highly varying loading profile that covers a wide range of the potential operational points of a FC. The hybrid model shows promising results, showing fidelity levels similar to CFD models, including the capacity to assess the spatial distribution, and a low computational cost. Hence, this hybrid model is demonstrated to be an attractive tool for the design of FCs and electrolysers, optimisation of thermal management and control strategies, degradation analysis, and techno-economic analysis. Weed harrowing is commonly used to manage weeds in organic farming but is also applied in conventional farming to replace herbicides. Due to its whole-field application, weed harrowing after crop emergence has relatively poor selectivity and may cause crop damage. Weediness generally varies within a field. Therefore, there is a potential to improve the selectivity and consider the within-field variation in weediness. This paper describes a decision model for precision post-emergence weed harrowing in cereals based on experimental data in spring barley and nonlinear regression analysis. The model predicts the optimal weed harrowing intensity in terms of the tine angle of the harrow for a given weediness (in terms of percentage weed cover), a given draft force of tines, and the biological weed damage threshold (in terms of percentage weed cover). Weed cover was measured with near-ground RGB images analyzed with a machine vision algorithm based on deep learning techniques. The draft force of tines was estimated with an electronic load cell. The proposed model is the first that uses a weed damage threshold in addition to site-specific values of weed cover and soil hardness to predict the site-specific optimal weed harrow tine angle. Treatment of wastewater and reuse of purified water in an industrial process can provide an alternative source of fresh water as well as reduce pollution load by discharging a lower quantity of wastewater. When adsorption is used for treatment, the regeneration of the used adsorbent may also account for a large portion of the operational cost and cause secondary pollution. This problem may be solved by cyclic repetition of adsorption/regeneration cycles using a column method. In this paper, a total of nine successive cycles of zinc capture and zeolite bed regeneration using a column method have been investigated. The derived form of the breakthrough curve was used for analysing mass transfer in the column. For that purpose, the Dose–response, the Thomas, the Bohart-Adams, the Yoon-Nelson and the Wolborska models were used for modelling the breakthrough curve by nonlinear regression analysis. Simulation results and mathematical similarities between the models were discussed. This is the first study that used derived form of Dose–response model to analyse the inflection points of the breakthrough curve and mass transfer during nine consecutive sorption-regeneration cycles of zinc ions on natural zeolite. Obtained peak shape rate profiles were analysed for all cycles. Optimal operation conditions were evaluated with respect to the inflection point, the model parameters, and the residence time. Recently, steel fiber–reinforced magnesium phosphate cement–based concrete (SFRMPCC) has attracted much attention due to its excellent properties. To apply this new type of concrete to practical engineering, this paper evaluates the effect of steel fiber (SF) content and curing age on the water and sulfate resistance of magnesium phosphate cement–based concrete (MPCC). Specimens containing fly ash and metakaolin and with different SF volume contents were prepared and subjected to curing in air, water, and 5% Na2SO4 solution. The mass change, cubic compressive strength (CCS), strength retention rate, deterioration factor, microstructure, and phase composition were analyzed. Empirical formulas for strength prediction are proposed using range, variance, and nonlinear regression analysis methods. The results showed that the specimens immersed in water and Na2SO4 solution had good mass retention. The compressive strength of air-cured specimens gradually increased with the curing age, and the addition of a proper amount of SF could improve the strength under air curing. However, the addition of SF had a negative effect on the compactness and strength of specimens immersed in water and sulfate solution. SFRMPCC and MPCC had good resistance to sulfate attack, which may be related to the new reaction in the magnesium phosphate cement (MPC) matrix. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper considers nonlinear regression models when neither the response variable nor the covariates can be directly observed, but are measured with multiplicative distortion measurement errors. We proposed the second order least squares estimator by including in the criterion function the distance of both the response variable to its conditional mean and the squared response variable to its second conditional moment given the predictor variables. The asymptotic results of the second order nonlinear least squares estimators for the regression parameter are derived. As a by-product, we construct confidence intervals by estimating the asymptotic covariance matrices. We also consider to use three existing calibration procedures to calibrate the unknown response and covariates, namely, the conditional absolute mean calibration, the conditional variance calibration and the logarithmic calibration. The simulation studies shows that these second order nonlinear least squares estimators with three calibration procedures are all superior than the ordinary nonlinear least squares estimators. Text regression is an important task in natural language processing (NLP), which aims to predict continuous numerical values associated with text. Previous work focused on linear text regression requiring manual feature selection for financial prediction. Recently, non‐linear text regression through neural network models has become a trend. However, most models rely only on convolutional neural networks (CNN) and suffer from insufficient interpretability. In this paper, we propose a deep neural network model named EM‐CBA for text regression and further interpret the model. The proposed model is powered by word EMbedding, CNN, Bidirectional long short‐term memory (Bi‐LSTM) and Attention mechanism. The proposed EM‐CBA takes financial report texts as input and predicts a financial metric named return on assets (ROA). We conduct comprehensive experiments on a dataset about the reports of enterprises. Experimental results show that the proposed model provides more accurate predictions of enterprises' metrics than previous convolutional neural network models and other classical models. The validity of each module of the model is also verified. Finally, we demonstrate a way of performing analysis in words change and results errors to intuitively interpret the effect of different text inputs on the model. This work presents a global surrogate modelling of mechanical systems with elasto-plastic material behaviour based on support vector regression (SVR). In general, the main challenge in surrogate modelling is to construct an approximation model with the ability to capture the non-smooth behaviour of the system under interest. This paper investigates the ability of the SVR to deal with discontinuous and high non-smooth outputs. Two different kernel functions, namely the Gaussian and Matèrn 5/2 kernel functions, are examined and compared through one-dimensional, purely phenomenological elasto-plastic case. Thereafter, an essential part of this paper is addressed towards the application of the SVR for the two-dimensional elasto-plastic case preceded by a finite element method. In this study, the SVR computational cost is reduced by using anisotropic training grid where the number of points are only increased in the direction of the most important input parameters. Finally, the SVR accuracy is improved by smoothing the response surface based on the linear regression. In this paper, we study the problem of estimating smooth Generalized Linear Models (GLMs) in the Non-interactive Local Differential Privacy (NLDP) model. Unlike its classical setting, our model allows the server to access additional public but unlabeled data. In the first part of the paper, we focus on GLMs. Specifically, we first consider the case where each data record is i.i.d. sampled from a zero-mean multivariate Gaussian distribution. Motivated by the Stein's lemma, we present an (ϵ, δ)-NLDP algorithm for GLMs. Moreover, the sample complexity of public and private data for the algorithm to achieve an l2-norm estimation error of α (with high probability) is O(pα-2) and Õ(p³α-2ϵ-2) respectively, where p is the dimension of the feature vector. This is a significant improvement over the previously known exponential or quasi-polynomial in α-1, or exponential in p sample complexities of GLMs with no public data. Then we consider a more general setting where each data record is i.i.d. sampled from some sub-Gaussian distribution with bounded l1-norm. Based on a variant of Stein's lemma, we propose an (ϵ, δ)-NLDP algorithm for GLMs whose sample complexity of public and private data to achieve an l∞-norm estimation error of α is O(p²α-2) and Õ(p²α-2ϵ-2) respectively, under some mild assumptions and if α is not too small (i.e., α ≥ Ω(1/√p)). In the second part of the paper, we extend our idea to the problem of estimating non-linear regressions and show similar results as in GLMs for both multivariate Gaussian and sub-Gaussian cases. Finally, we demonstrate the effectiveness of our algorithms through experiments on both synthetic and real-world datasets. Using data mining, the purpose of this study is to forecast and analyze the growth of the cotton cultivation industry and the policy financial support demands in the Aksu region. Data mining is a method for maximizing the value of data via the application of numerous algorithms. In contrast to conventional data mining, which adheres to specific algorithms, data mining employs a variety of analysis algorithms to analyze raw data, such as image and panel data, and produce accurate results. In this paper, we propose a data mining method that combines the semantic segmentation algorithm of remote sensing images with various nonlinear regression algorithms to predict the demand for policy-based financial support in a specific region based on a combination of multiple factors, including agricultural crop cultivation area, catastrophe analyses, agricultural price and inflation rates, etc. This paper intends to estimate and analyze actual data pertaining to the cotton cultivation industry in Aksu, and this methodology can further improve the policy-based financial inverse model. A reasonable prediction of the elastic modulus of rock and rock mass can provide sound basis for the design in tunnels and underground caverns. It is observed from the laboratory results that the elastic modulus not only depends on the confining pressure but also indicates certain sensitivity to the failure degree during the loading-fracturing process. This paper deduces a unified expression for the elastic modulus with the coupling effects of the plastic strain and confining stress, and fits the soft, moderate, hard rocks with different quality. In this paper, a method to determine the elastic modulus from the laboratory results is proposed. Through the method, the variation of the elastic modulus versus the plastic strain and confining stress for the soft, moderate, hard rocks is analysed. A unified deterioration model for the elastic modulus is developed by the nonlinear fitting regression method. This deterioration model can be employed in the analytical and numerical analysis of the tunnels and underground caverns, which enables to present a more realistic mechanical behaviour of rock mass. In many scientific fields, the dynamics of the system are often known, and the main challenge is to estimate the parameters that model the behavior of the system. The question then arises whether one can use experimental measurements of the system response to derive the parameters? This problem has been addressed in many papers that focus mainly on data from a deterministic model, but few efforts have been made to use stochastic data instead. In this paper, we address this problem using the following procedure: first, we build the probabilistic stochastic differential models using a natural extension of the commonly used deterministic models. Then, we use the data from the stochastic models to estimate the model parameters by solving a nonlinear regression problem. Since the stochastic solutions are not differentiable, we use the well-known Nelder–Mead algorithm. This article discusses the performance of an algorithm for detection of defect centers in semiconductor materials. It is based on direct parameter approximation with nonlinear regression to determine the parameters of thermal emission rate in the photocurrent waveforms. The methodology of the proposed algorithm was presented and its application procedure was described and the results of its application can be seen in measured photocurrent waveforms of a silicon crystal examined with High-Resolution Photoinduced Transient Spectroscopy (HRPITS). The performance of the presented algorithm was verified using simulated photocurrent waveforms without and with noise at the level of 10-2.
