Climate change has limited crop productivity worldwide. Understanding crop response to global climate changes is vital to maintaining agricultural sustainable development. A two-year experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of warming and drought on crop growth and winter wheat yield production. The results showed that both warming and drought shortened the crop growth period, reduced the leaf area index, and increased winter wheat biomass accumulation. Under sufficient water supply conditions, warming would increase photosynthetic and transpiration rates and water use efficiency, while under water deficit conditions, the opposite was observed. Under warming conditions, the grain yield of the water deficit treatment was 8.9% lower than that of the sufficient water supply treatment. Under non-warming conditions, the grain yield of water deficit treatment was 12.4% lower than that of the sufficient water supply. Under the conditions of water-sufficient supply, the grain yield of the warming treatment was 4.4% lower than that of the non-warming treatment, and under the conditions of water deficit, the grain yield of the warming treatment was 1.3% lower than that of the non-warming treatment. Warming tends to decrease wheat growth and grain yield, but sufficient water supply could improve winter wheat's water use efficiency and reduce the warming limitation on wheat production. Farm leftovers, particularly crop residues, are a key source of renewable energy in Canada. The nation's robust agricultural industry provides ample biomass, derived from forestry and agriculture resources, for energy generation. Crop residues, such as straws and husks, play a crucial role in this biomass reservoir, contributing to biofuel production and greenhouse gas mitigation efforts. Focusing on supply chains, waste management, and emission reduction, this study evaluates the sustainability of wheat straw, an agricultural biomass by-product. The environmental issues of various approaches to managing agricultural biomass were explored. Following an evaluation of biomass features, conversion methods, and economic and environmental advantages, the results show anaerobic digestion to be the most sustainable approach. Four metrics were examined in relation to social elements, and numerous aspects were considered as inputs in the evaluation of transportation costs. The use of electric trucks versus fuel-based trucks resulted in an 18% reduction in total operating costs and a 58% reduction in consumption costs. This study examined CO2 emissions over four different transportation distances. The data indicate that a significant reduction of 36% in kg CO2 equivalent emissions occurred when the distance was lowered from 100 km to 25 km. The direct-sown cotton after wheat harvest (DSCWH) cropping system has attracted wide attention due to reduced labor inputs compared to transplanting. However, the management strategy of slow-release nitrogen is unclear in such a system. This study aims to investigate the impact of different timings and dosages of slow-release nitrogen fertilizer on the yield, biomass accumulation and distribution, and nitrogen absorption and nitrogen utilization in the DSCWH cropping system. This study was investigated at the experimental farm of Yangzhou University, China in 2020 and 2021, with the short-season cotton variety "Zhongmian 50" used as experimental material. Three dosages of the slow-release nitrogen fertilizer (45 kg·ha−1, 90 kg·ha−1, and 135 kg·ha−1) were applied at two stages of growth (two-leaf and four-leaf). The results showed that applying a 90 kg·ha−1 dosage at the two-leaf stage achieved the highest yield, which was increased by 12.6% compared to the no-fertilization control. Applying 90 kg·ha−1 of the slow-release nitrogen at the two-leaf stage promoted biomass accumulation, especially in reproductive organs, and this increase in biomass of reproductive organs was attributed to optimum nitrogen accumulation in reproductive organs (80~140 kg·ha−1). In addition, when 90 kg·ha−1 was applied at the two-leaf stage, there was a significant enhancement in nitrogen recovery efficiency (NRE), nitrogen agronomic use efficiency (NAE), and nitrogen physiological efficiency (NPE), with increases of 7.2% to 13.0%, 5.7% to 5.8%, and 5.6% to 6.5%, respectively. These results revealed that applying slow-release nitrogen fertilizer with the optimal dosage at the seedling stage could significantly enhance nitrogen use efficiency, nitrogen accumulation and partitioning, and biomass accumulation and distribution, which ultimately resulted in a higher lint yield in DSCWH. Therefore, to optimize yield and NUE, 90 kg·ha−1 slow-release nitrogen applied at the two-leaf stage would be recommended in the direct-sown cotton after wheat harvest cropping system. Wheat yield and nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) have improved simultaneously with the genetic development of wheat varieties. However, wheat selection is carried out routinely in N‐rich field conditions, with breeding progress limited under low soil available nitrogen. Thus, we performed a 2‐year field investigation using eight milestone winter wheat varieties released between 1947 and 2017 in the Huang‐Huai‐Hai region of China with two N applications—normal (CK; 220 kg N ha−1) and reduced (RN; 110 kg N ha−1)—in Shaanxi, China, to examine changes in wheat yield, NUE, water use efficiency (WUE) and root biomass. Our findings revealed average annual yield increases of 49.615 kg ha−1 and 36.905 kg ha−1 under CK and RN, respectively. Notably, the NUE trend mirrored yield, increasing with the release year of wheat varieties, with average annual increases in NUE of 0.192 and 0.336 kg kg−1 under CK and RN, respectively. In the RN treatment, N uptake efficiency (UPE) increased with year of release, while N utilization efficiency (UTE) had no significant relationship. In the CK treatment, UTE increased with year of release, while UPE had no significant relationship. Across the 2‐year experiment, surface root biomass (0–20 cm layer) increased with year of release under CK but had no relationship under RN, while deep root biomass (20–200 cm layer) decreased with year of release under CK and increased under RN. The roots of modern wheat varieties responded better to soil nitrogen levels and produced higher yields, NUE and WUE than earlier varieties by adjusting root biomass distribution in soil. The aim of the present work was to investigate ash formation and associated interactions during the pulverized fuel co-combustion of biomass fuels. Combustion experiments were carried out with narrowly sized wheat straw (WS), sewage sludge (SS), and their blends in a drop tube furnace at 1100 °C and 1300 °C. The resulting residual ash and fine particulate matter (PM10) were characterized with various analyses. It was observed that co-combustion influences size distributions of the residual ash particles and generally generates larger residual ash particles close to those of SS combustion. The interaction of K capture by minerals enhances the melting and consequently increases the production of large and melting ash particles during co-combustion. It was found that blending SS with WS has not only the positive interaction of K capture by minerals from SS ash to significantly reduce submicron ash formation, but also the positive interaction of transforming alkali chlorides into alkali sulfates to reduce the corrosiveness of submicron ash particles. Co-combustion of SS with WS can also reduce the presence of alkali chloride at PM1–10, lowering the propensities of deposition and corrosion of the fine residual ash particles. Trichothecenes are sesquiterpenoid toxins produced by diverse ascomycetes, including Fusarium. The trichothecene analog deoxynivalenol (DON) produced by the Fusarium head blight (FHB) pathogen Fusarium graminearum is a virulence factor on wheat and a major food and feed safety concern. In Fusarium, the trichothecene biosynthetic gene (TRI) cluster consists of 7–14 genes. Most TRI cluster genes are conserved and their specific roles in trichothecene biosynthesis have been determined. An exception is TRI14, which is not required for DON synthesis in vitro but is required for spread of F. graminearum in wheat heads. In the current study, gene expression analyses revealed that TRI14 was highly induced in infected wheat heads. We demonstrated that TRI14 was not only required for F. graminearum spread but also important for initial infection in wheat. Although a prior study did not detect DON in infected seeds, our analyses showed significantly less DON and fungal biomass in TRI14-mutant (designated ∆tri14)-inoculated heads than wild-type-inoculated heads. Gene expression comparison showed that the level of expression of TRI genes was similar in the wheat tissues infected with ∆tri14 or the wild type, indicating the reduced toxin levels caused by ∆tri14 may be due to less fungal growth. ∆tri14 also caused less lesion and grew less in wheat coleoptiles than the wild type. The growth of ∆tri14 in carboxymethylcellulose medium was more sensitive to hydrogen peroxide than the wild type. Perennial wheat yields for several years after sowing, and develops a deep and dense root system, thereby improving soil structure and preserving soil fertility. It is also drought resistant, which increases its future potential under the ongoing climate change. Moreover, perennial wheat offers and effective strategy for carbon sequestration through increasing soil carbon stocks. However, the effect of perennial wheat on soil properties remains uncertain in the conditions of south-eastern Kazakhstan due to the lack of data. To fill this gap, we conducted a study in which five varieties of perennial wheat were grown in the Almaty region in soils of different fertility for two years. As a result, in the plot where topsoil was removed to a depth of 25 cm, total carbon increased by nearly three times, from 0.54% to 1.42%, and the number of microorganisms increased from 715.1x103±0.2x103 to 48.0x103±0.6x103 colony forming units per ml of soil. The photosynthetic performance of perennial wheat varieties in the experimental plot was not negatively affected by the removal of top soil suggesting that perennial wheat can successfully restore soil fertility and replenish soil with chemical elements involved in photosynthesis. Our results confirm that in the conditions of the south-eastern Kazakhstan perennial wheat makes a significant contribution to the soil carbon stock accumulation and development of soil biota; in our study, these effects were particularly strong in the case of degraded soil. Phosphoric acid-hydrogen peroxide (PHP) pretreatment is an effective method to obtain a cellulose-enriched fraction from biomass. In this study, artificial neural network (ANN) was used to predict PHP pretreatment efficiency of cellulose content (C-C), cellulose recovery (C-Ry), hemicellulose removal (H-Rl), and lignin removal (L-Rl) under various conditions of pretreatment time (t), temperature (T), H3PO4 concentration (Cp), and H2O2 concentration (Ch). The final optimized topology structure of the ANN models had 1 hidden layers with 9 neurons for C-C and 10 neurons for C-Ry, 10 neurons for H-Rl, and 12 neurons for L-Rl. The actual testing data fit the predicted data with R2 values ranging from 0.8070 to 0.9989. The relative importance (RI) revealed that Cp and Ch were significant factors influencing the efficiency of PHP pretreatment with total RI values ranging from 12% to 62.6%. However, their weights for the three components of biomass were different. The value of T dominated hemicellulose removal effectiveness with an RI value of 78.6%, while t did not seem to be a main factor dominating PHP pretreatment efficiency. Phosphorus (P) management in wheat grown under saline soil conditions requires a better understanding of how P placement and salt stress affect spatial root distribution, plant agronomic performance, and nutrient utilization. A column culture experiment was conducted with two wheat genotypes, Alice and LX99, five P placements ('Top Dressed High P', TopHP; 'Top Dressed Reduced P', TopRP; 'Deep Banded High P', DeepHP; 'Deep Banded Reduced P', DeepRP; and 'No P added', −P), and two salt stress levels ('salt stress', +S; 'non-salt stress', −S) to investigate differences in biomass accumulation, nutrient utilization, and root distribution (0–20 cm, 20–40 cm, and 40–100 cm) among treatments. Deep P placement under non-salt stress increased root distribution at 20–40 cm soil depth for both genotypes compared to top P placement. P application under salt stress increased root weight at all three soil depths in both genotypes and P accumulation in aboveground plant parts (except for LX99 under TopRP). The highest P utilization efficiency occurred in Alice with TopRP and in LX99 with DeepRP under non-salt and salt stresses. Overall, a coordinated adaptation in allocating biomass between belowground and aboveground plant parts, along with altered nutrient utilization, was necessary to reach a growth compromise in response to P supply changes and salinity. Radiation interception, radiation use efficiency (RUE) and harvest index (HI) are the key determinants of grain yield in cereal species. However, little is known about how these traits affect grain yield among spring wheat genotypes grown under low and optimum nitrogen (N) fertiliser supply. We used two experiments, in a field (Experiment 1; 2017–2018) and glasshouse (Experiment 2; 2018–2019) to investigate the effects of these traits on grain yield. Grain yield increased by 35% with increasing N fertiliser supply to 8.80 t/ha in Experiment 1 and 151% to 8.33 t/ha in Experiment 2. Grain yield was lowest for 'Reliance' and highest for 'Discovery' in both experiments. Differences in grain yield were not associated with HI. As the RUE did not differ among genotypes, the yield differences were attributed to the different amounts of radiation intercepted; a result of the faster leaf area expansion rate (LAER) and subsequent higher maximum green leaf area index (GLAI), and a longer leaf area duration (LAD). The differences in LAER and maximum GLAI among the genotypes were associated with a differences in specific leaf area (cm2/g). Our results suggest that improved grain yields in spring wheat can be achieved by focusing breeding efforts on canopy characteristics to increase radiation interception. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Selecting cultivars with greater biomass results in higher yields and greater carbon sequestration. Storage of atmospheric carbon in the plant/soil pool contributes not only to food security but also to mitigating climate change and other agroecological benefits. The objective of this study was to determine: (1) grain, residue, and root biomass yields; (2) harvest indexes; (3) residue-to-product ratio; (4) root-to-shoot ratio; (5) biomass carbon and nitrogen contents; and (6) C:N ratios for two new and two old winter wheat cultivars. The greatest yield difference was found between old Srpanjka (the lowest) and new Kraljica (the highest) cultivar where grain, residue, root, and total biomass yield was higher by 38%, 91%, 71%, and 64%, respectively. Total biomass was composed of 40–47% grain, 10–11% roots, 32–36% stems + leaves, 9–11% chaff, and 1–2% spindle. The range of HI was 0.45–0.53, RPR 0.91–1.25, and R:S ratio 0.12–0.13. For all cultivars, positive carbon and negative nitrogen balance within the plant pool was determined. The timely and accurate estimation of above-ground biomass (AGB) is crucial for indicating crop growth status, assisting management decisions, and predicting grain yield. Unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) remote sensing technology is a promising approach for monitoring crop biomass. However, the determination of winter wheat AGB based on canopy reflectance is affected by spectral saturation effects. Thus, constructing a generic model for accurately estimating winter wheat AGB using UAV data is significant. In this study, a three-dimensional conceptual model (3DCM) for estimating winter wheat AGB was constructed using plant height (PH) and fractional vegetation cover (FVC). Compared with both the traditional vegetation index model and the traditional multi-feature combination model, the 3DCM yielded the best accuracy for the jointing stage (based on RGB data: coefficient of determination (R2) = 0.82, normalized root mean square error (nRMSE) = 0.2; based on multispectral (MS) data: R2 = 0.84, nRMSE = 0.16), but the accuracy decreased significantly when the spike organ appeared. Therefore, the spike number (SN) was added to create a new three-dimensional conceptual model (n3DCM). Under different growth stages and UAV platforms, the n3DCM (RGB: R2 = 0.73–0.85, nRMSE = 0.17–0.23; MS: R2 = 0.77–0.84, nRMSE = 0.17–0.23) remarkably outperformed the traditional multi-feature combination model (RGB: R2 = 0.67–0.88, nRMSE = 0.15–0.25; MS: R2 = 0.60–0.77, nRMSE = 0.19–0.26) for the estimation accuracy of the AGB. This study suggests that the n3DCM has great potential in resolving spectral errors and monitoring growth parameters, which could be extended to other crops and regions for AGB estimation and field-based high-throughput phenotyping. Direct Methanol fuel cells (DMFC) have been limited in their utilization due to their slow cathodic oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) kinetics and the expensive cost of commercial Pt/C catalysts. It is critical to design an oxygen reduction process with high-efficiency catalysts. An approach for modulating the ratio of cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin in the wheat stalk (WS)/wheat stalk binder (WS binder) precursor materials is proposed in this work. WS binder from alkalization and hydrothermal treatment was added to the WS to change the structure and shape of WS-based carbon materials by varying the ratios, which increased the ORR catalytic activity. The half-wave potential (E 1/2) of the produced carbon material (15 wt% N/C (WS)) is 0.76 V, which was enhanced by 80 mV by adjusting the ratio of the WS/WS binder compared to 0 wt% N/C(WS). The E 1/2 of 15 wt% Fe–N/C (WS) (0.85 V) was greater than that of commercial Pt/C (0.84 V). Besides, its catalytic oxygen reduction process was close to the 4-electron transfer pathway and had good methanol tolerance. The power density obtained with a cathode catalyst of 15 wt% Fe–N/C (WS) for DMFC was 1.39 mW cm−2 at 30 °C and 3.33 mW cm−2 at 60 °C. At different temperatures, the power densities were 1.59 and 1.54 times greater than those of commercial Pt/C catalysts, respectively. Introduction The agriculture sector, as the biggest consumer of water to produce more food, has faced the challenge of water shortage. One of the problems ahead in the agricultural industry is the sustainable use of available resources such as land, water, and labor to increase agricultural production and development, which requires proper planning and management policies. Plant models can be used to investigate the long-term effects of quantitative and qualitative changes in irrigation water on crops, soil salinity, evaporation and transpiration, deep infiltration, and surface runoff. One of the widely used plant models is the AquaCrop model, which was presented and developed by the World Food and Agriculture Organization. The Aquacrop model is one of the crop yield estimation models that can be used for a wide range of crops including fodder crops, vegetables, grains, fruits, oil crops, and tubers. In this model, the state of various stresses including water and soil salinity, simulation of lack of irrigation, and crop yield are considered. Various studies have been conducted regarding the calibration and validation of crop forecasting models in our country, and much research has been conducted on wheat at the global level. In this research, the AquaCrop model was used to predict the biomass and grain yield of wheat in Qazvin. This model can be a good substitute for field measurements and can be used in areas where there is a lack of ground information. Materials and Methods In the present research, the data of water wheat cultivation in a lysimeter in Ismailabad, Qazvin were used. The input information of the AquaCrop model includes information on climate, soil, management, and plant characteristics. To calibrate and verify the model, some farm information was needed to be compared with the output of the AquaCrop model. The biomass of the wheat plant was determined by taking random samples of the 0.5×0.5 m2 with two replications per sampling hectare. To measure grain yield in the fields, four samples were taken at the end of the growing season at the end stage. The validated AquaCrop model was used to estimate the effect of three planting dates and three low irrigation conditions on wheat grain yield. In this step, the average regional information around the farms was used so that the implementation of the model is not unique to the conditions of a particular farm. Results and Discussion In terms of the investigated meteorological factors, the model has moderate sensitivity to maximum and minimum temperature and low sensitivity to rainfall. The change in the maximum temperature in this region increases the error of the simulation on average. Regarding the soil parameters, the sensitivity of the model to the crop capacity moisture, wilting point, saturated moisture, and saturated hydraulic conductivity, especially in saturated conditions, is low to medium. The most sensitive of the AquaCrop model was the change in the reference harvest index. The model simulated biomass values with higher accuracy than yield. In the calibration stage, the values CRM, NRMSE, and d for biomass were -0.15, 0.17, and 92% respectively. These values were obtained in the validation stage for biomass -0.1, 0.24, and 92 % respectively, and for yield -0.03, 0.06, and 80 % respectively. By running the model in different climatic scenarios, it was determined that the maximum delay in the planting date is on November 15. A 25% reduction in irrigation water reduced grain yield in wet, normal, and dry years by 15%, 20%, and 28 %, respectively, and a 50 % reduction in irrigation water reduced its amount by 20, 25, and 45 %, respectively. Conclusion Evaluation of the AquaCrop model for common plants in a region plays an important role in comparing crop performance in different conditions. In this research, the ability of AquaCrop 6 model to estimate the yield and biomass of wheat in Ismailabad Qazvin was investigated. The results showed that the model is capable of simulating these factors with high accuracy. The accuracy of the model in biomass simulation was higher than the grain yield. By implementing the calibrated model in different climatic scenarios, planting dates, and irrigation deficits in two regions, it was determined that to achieve optimal performance, the wheat planting date should not exceed 15 November. It was the use of calibration coefficients by spending a long time in the AquaCrop model so that a calibrated model can be used in many areas with proper accuracy. More accuracy in the simulated results can be achieved by using more calibration factors, but it is clear that the use of more calibration factors requires spending more time and money. Finding a general recalibrated model that can be used in large areas is a good solution in crop management at the farm-to-regional scale. Comparing the statistical parameters obtained in this study with previous studies on wheat yield modeling by the AquaCrop model shows that the results of this study are within an acceptable range. Soil sodicity is a major constraint to seedling emergence and crop production, potentially reducing plant growth due to physical and chemical constraints. Studying responses to ion imbalances may help identify genotypes tolerant to chemical constraints in sodic soils, thereby improving productivity. We evaluated the performance of four wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) genotypes in solutions with five sodium adsorption ratios (SARs) ranging from 0 to 60. For all four genotypes, seedling emergence and shoot dry matter (DM) decreased significantly with increasing SARs. A significant positive correlation was observed between Ca concentration in roots as well as both root and shoot DM for all genotypes. At SAR values > 20, the more tolerant genotype (EGA Gregory) displayed higher Ca concentrations in root tissues, whereas the more sensitive genotype (Baxter) exhibited Na-induced Ca deficiency. Thus, the selection of genotypes that are able to accumulate Ca in roots in sodic conditions may be a useful trait for selecting genotypes tolerant of soils with high ESP values. However, for soils that restrict plant growth at ESP (SAR) values of 6–10%, it is likely that growth is restricted by physical constraints rather than by a Na-induced Ca deficiency. The present work aimed to test selected microalgae strains from the Mosonmagyaróvár Algae Culture Collection (MACC) on germination ability and certain physiological processes in winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) plants. Germination tests showed substantial differences between the strains, meaning that certain strains (such as MACC-430, MACC-612, MACC-922) improved the germination processes while others performed worse (MACC-438, MACC-755) than the control in a concentration-dependent manner. The germination index of seeds treated with MACC-430 @ 1 g L−1 concentrations was 87, while that of the control was 45. The mungbean rooting bioassay proves that microalgae biomass may exhibit auxin-like activity, especially in strain MACC-612 (Nostoc sp.), which was characterized by the highest endogenous level of plant growth regulator indole-3-acetic-acid among the selected strains. Foliar spray on the leaves of developed plants did not significantly alter the photosynthetic processes, but it influenced the secondary metabolite composition. After the application of microalgae biomass, there were also changes in plant hormones, including salicylic acid, abscisic acid, and jasmonic acid-leucine/isoleucine conjugate compositions, which play a role in plant stress signaling in plants. A decrease in indole-3-acetic acid was also observed in the Mv Nádor cultivar. These results suggest that the application of certain microalgae strains can be used effectively to improve the germination of wheat seeds, and as a foliar spray, they may also modify the acclimation processes in a genotype-dependent way. Winter wheat production is threatened by drought stress under rainfed conditions; thus, screening high- and stable-yielding wheat varieties to ensure the sustainable development of wheat production and food security in the Huang-Huai-Hai Plain (HHHP) is vital. In this research, four-year field experiments with twelve winter wheat varieties were conducted during the winter wheat-growing seasons between 2016 and 2020 in order to: (1) screen high- and stable-yielding winter wheat varieties under rainfed conditions, (2) investigate the mechanism of high-yielding wheat yield formation and the relationships among grain-yield formation traits, and (3) investigate the nitrogen utilization efficiency (NUtE) of high-yielding wheat. The results showed that high-yield level wheat varieties (HL; Yannong999, Taimai1918 and Yannong173) obtained a higher average grain yield than medium-yield level wheat varieties (ML) and low-yield level wheat varieties (LL) by 10.1% and 29.0%, respectively. Compared with ML and LL, HL had a higher biomass at anthesis, higher spike dry matter at anthesis, higher spike partitioning index and fruiting efficiency (grain set per unit of spike dry weight at anthesis), and the highest grain number per square meter (24.2 × 103 m−2). Simultaneously, HL maintained a higher leaf area index (LAI) at anthesis and a higher net photosynthesis rate (Pn) of flag leaves after anthesis, which contributed to a higher post-anthesis biomass; HL also had higher maturity biomass, harvest index (HI), and biomass remobilization in comparison to ML and LL. The above results demonstrated that HL improved grain yield by increasing grain number per square meter, post-anthesis biomass, biomass remobilization, maturity biomass, and HI. Additionally, HL also obtained higher NUtE by improving grain yield. Biomass fuels play an important role in the field of fluidized bed combustion, but due to the diversity and uncertainty of fuels, there are usually some problems of high CO emission that cannot be directly solved by combustion adjustment. In this paper, a 75 t/h biomass fluidized bed was taken as the research object. It was observed from the field test that the gas incomplete combustion loss reached 12.13% when mono-combustion of wheat straw was conducted, and the CO concentration in the exhaust gas exceeded 30k ppm. Combined with the CPFD numerical simulation, the combustion characteristics and influence of secondary air layout on CO reduction performance were discussed in detail. The results revealed that the gas temperature gradually increased along furnace height under the initial condition, and the maximum temperature was more than 1000 °C at furnace outlet. The air curtain of the secondary air jets was insufficient, and the wheat straw rose rapidly as it entered into the furnace. By arranging adjacent secondary air ports above each fuel-feeding inlet, the residence time of particles in the furnace could be significantly increased, thus, the furnace temperature distribution was more reasonable and the CO emission was reduced by 58.6%. In this study, we investigated the genetic mapping of root biomass and root/shoot ratio. We utilized a large (n = 345) bi‐parental recombinant inbred line (RIL) population from the 'Penny' × 'Yecora‐Rojo' cross to investigate the partitioning of biomass above‐ and belowground and to identify the quantitative trait loci (QTL) that influence root biomass and root/shoot ratio. Genotyping of 345 RILs by using genotyping by sequencing produced 2918 single‐nucleotide polymorphism markers by which a genome‐wide map of 3507 cM was constructed. Phenotyping was conducted in an augmented design with large pots in controlled environment. We identified two significant QTL regions, QRt.peye‐5A and QRt.peye‐5B, which control root biomass and the root/shoot ratio. QRt.peye‐5A, marking a 3.15 Mbp region on chromosome 5A, explained 11% of variations in root biomass and 9.5% of variations in root/shoot ratio, with the narrow region harbouring 28 genes. QRt.peye‐5B, marking a 12.2 Mbp region on chromosome 5B, explained 7% of variations in root/shoot ratio and harbours 104 genes. The root/shoot ratio enhancing alleles at QRt.peye‐5A and QRt.peye‐5B come from 'Penny' and 'Yecora‐Rojo' respectively. These QTL regions contains genes such as the two MADS box transcription factors on the 5A QTL that are candidate genes for Vrn1 locus, and other genes previously postulated for root traits such as a COBRA‐like COBL2 and landmark hormonal responses genes such as IAA16, IAA4 and BRI1, DREB2A‐INTERACTING PROTEIN2 (DRIP2) and bHLH92 which has a role in amelioration of stress conditions. The genetic heritage of wheat (Triticum spp.) crops has been shaped by millions of years of predomestication natural selection, often driven by competition among individuals. However, genetic improvements in yield potential are thought to involve selection towards reduced competitiveness, thus enhancing adaptation to the crop environment. We investigated potential trade‐offs between individual plant fitness and community performance using a population of introgression lines carrying chromosome segments of wild emmer (nondomesticated) in the background of an elite durum cultivar. We focused on light as a primary factor affecting plant–plant interactions and assessed morphological and biomass phenotypes of single plants grown in mixtures under sunlight and a simulated canopy shade, and the relevance of these phenotypes for the monoculture community in the field. We found that responses to canopy shade resemble responses to high density and contribute to both the individual and the community. Stepwise regressions suggested that grain number per spike and its persistence under shade are essential attributes of productive communities, advocating their use as a breeding target during early‐generation selection. Overall, multiple phenotypes attained under shade could better explain community performance. Our novel, applicable, high‐throughput set‐up provides new prospects for studying and selecting single‐plant phenotypes in a canopy‐like environment. Summary: How plants distribute biomass among organs influences resource acquisition, reproduction and plant–plant interactions, and is essential in understanding plant ecology, evolution, and yield production in agriculture. However, the genetic mechanisms regulating allocation responses to the environment are largely unknown.We studied recombinant lines of wheat (Triticum spp.) grown as single plants under sunlight and simulated canopy shade to investigate genotype‐by‐environment interactions in biomass allocation to the leaves, stems, spikes, and grains. Size‐corrected mass fractions and allometric slopes were employed to dissect allocation responses to light limitation and plant size.Size adjustments revealed light‐responsive alleles associated with adaptation to the crop environment. Combined with an allometric approach, we demonstrated that polymorphism in the DELLA protein is associated with the response to shade and size. While a gibberellin‐sensitive allelic effect on stem allocation was amplified when plants were shaded, size‐dependent effects of this allele drive allocation to reproduction, suggesting that the ontogenetic trajectory of the plant affects the consequences of shade responses for allocation.Our approach provides a basis for exploring the genetic determinants underlying investment strategies in the face of different resource constraints and will be useful in predicting social behaviours of individuals in a crop community. Successfully evaluating and improving the salt tolerance of genotypes requires an appropriate analysis tool to allow simultaneous analysis of multiple traits and to facilitate the ranking of genotypes across different growth stages and salinity levels. In this study, we evaluate the salt tolerance of 56 recombinant inbred lines (RILs) in the presence of salt-tolerant and salt-sensitive control genotypes using multivariate analysis of plant dry weight, measured at 75 (PDW-75) and 90 (PDW-90) days from sowing, biological yield (BY), grain yield (GY), and their salt tolerance indices (STIs). All RILs and genotypes were evaluated under the control and 15 dS m−1 for two consecutive years (2019/2020 and 2020/2021). Results showed significant main effects of salinity and genotype as well as their interactions on four plant traits. Significant genotypic differences were also found for all calculated STIs. STIs exhibited moderate to strong relationships with the four plant traits when measured under either the control or salinity conditions and between each other. The principal component analysis (PCA) showed that the most variation among all analyzed variables was explained by the first two PCs, with the PC1 and PC2 explained at 61.8–71.8% and at 28.0–38.2% of the total variation, respectively. The PC1 had positive and strong correlations with the four plant traits measured under salinity conditions and STI, YI, REI, SWPI, MRPI, MPI, GMPI, and HMPI. The PC2 had strong correlations with BY and GY measured under the control conditions and SSI, TOL, RSE, and YSI. The PC1 was able to identify the salt-tolerant genotypes, while the PC2 was able to isolate the salt-sensitive ones. Cluster analysis based on multiple traits organized 64 genotypes into four groups varied from salt-tolerant to salt-sensitive genotypes, with the salt-tolerant group attaining higher value for plant traits under salinity conditions and the STIs related to the PC1. In conclusion, the use of multivariate analysis together with the STIs that evaluated the performance of genotypes under contrasting environmental conditions will help breeders to distinguish salt-tolerant genotypes from salt-sensitive ones, even at the early growth stages of plant development. The aboveground dry biomass (AGDB) of winter wheat can reflect the growth and development of winter wheat. The rapid monitoring of AGDB by using hyperspectral technology is of great significance for obtaining the growth and development status of winter wheat in real time and promoting yield increase. This study analyzed the changes of AGDB based on a winter wheat irrigation experiment. At the same time, the AGDB and canopy hyperspectral reflectance of winter wheat were obtained. The effect of spectral preprocessing algorithms such as reciprocal logarithm (Lg), multiple scattering correction (MSC), standardized normal variate (SNV), first derivative (FD), and second derivative (SD); sample division methods such as the concentration gradient method (CG), the Kennard–Stone method (KS), and the sample subset partition based on the joint X–Y distances method (SPXY); sample division ratios such as 1:1 (Ratio1), 3:2 (Ratio2), 2:1 (Ratio3), 5:2 (Ratio4), and 3:1 (Ratio5); dimension reduction algorithms such as uninformative variable elimination (UVE); and modeling algorithms such as partial least-squares regression (PLSR), stepwise multiple linear regression (SMLR), artificial neural network (ANN), and support vector machine (SVM) on the hyperspectral monitoring model of winter wheat AGDB was studied. The results showed that irrigation can improve the AGDB and canopy spectral reflectance of winter wheat. The spectral preprocessing algorithm can change the original spectral curve and improve the correlation between the original spectrum and the AGDB of winter wheat and screen out the bands of 1400 nm, 1479 nm, 1083 nm, 741 nm, 797 nm, and 486 nm, which have a high correlation with AGDB. The calibration sets and validation sets divided by different sample division methods and sample division ratios have different data-distribution characteristics. The UVE method can obviously eliminate some bands in the full-spectrum band. SVM is the best modeling algorithm. According to the universality of data, the better sample division method, sample division ratio, and modeling algorithm are SPXY, Ratio4, and SVM, respectively. Combined with the original spectrum and by using UVE to screen bands, a model with stable performance and high accuracy can be obtained. According to the particularity of data, the best model in this study is FD-CG-Ratio4-Full-SVM, for which the R2c, RMSEc, R2v, RMSEv, and RPD are 0.9487, 0.1663 kg·m−2, 0.7335, 0.3600 kg·m−2, and 1.9226, respectively, which can realize hyperspectral monitoring of winter wheat AGDB. This study can provide a reference for the rational irrigation of winter wheat in the field and provide a theoretical basis for monitoring the AGDB of winter wheat by using hyperspectral remote sensing technology. The source and sink relationships determine the amount and distribution of biomass in plants. Field and laboratory experiments were conducted to study the effect of nitrogen rate and spikelet removal on seed yield and germination traits of wheat. The field experiment was conducted employing sink manipulation (no spikelet removal and ½ spikelet removal) and source manipulation (nitrogen rate of 0, 75, and 150 kg ha-1 ). This study was performed as a factorial experiment in a randomized complete block design with three replications. Seeds obtained from the field experiment were subjected to determine the effect of the sink and source manipulation on seed germination traits in the laboratory experiment. Results showed that most traits under study were not affected by source and sink manipulation. Seed yield and seed weight were not affected by spikelet removal and varying nitrogen applications. Although some of the wheat spikelets have been removed, those plants have been able to maintain the number of seeds per spike and the weight of a single seed. The use of nitrogen at the spike emergence stage did not affect the seed yield of the Pishtaz cultivar. Nitrogen needed for the seeds could be compensated by the remobilization of nitrogen from various plant organs such as the stem. Nitrogen application of 150 kg ha-1 with the removal of ½ spikelets improved seed germination (%) and vigor comparing control (no spikelet removal with no nitrogen application). Considering that seed yield and seed weight did not change under the influence of source and sink manipulation, it can be concluded that Pishtaz wheat is more sink-limited than source-limited. Development of low-nitrogen (N) tolerant and N-responsive durum wheat genotypes is required since nitrogen efficiency has emerged as a highly desirable trait from economic and environmental perspectives. Two hundred durum wheat genotypes were evaluated at three locations under optimum (ON) and low (LN) nitrogen conditions to screen genotypes for low-nitrogen tolerance and responsiveness to an optimum N supply. The results showed significant variations among the durum wheat genotypes for low-N tolerance and responsiveness. The average reduction in grain yield under the LN condition was 48.03% across genotypes. Only 17% of the genotypes tested performed well (grain yield reduction <40%) under LN conditions. Based on the absolute grain yield, biomass yield, and normalized difference vegetative index value, on average, 32, 14, 17, and 37% of the tested genotypes were classified as efficient and responsive, efficient and nonresponsive, inefficient and responsive, and inefficient and nonresponsive, respectively. Considering the absolute and relative grain yield, biomass yield, normalized difference vegetative index values, and stress tolerance indices as selection criteria, 17 genotypes were chosen for subsequent breeding. Among the screening indices, geometric mean productivity, stress tolerance index, yield index, and stress susceptibility index exhibited positive and significant correlations with grain yield under both N conditions; hence, either of these traits can be used to select low-N-tolerant genotypes. The common genotypes identified as LN-tolerant and responsive to N application in this study could be used as parental donors for developing N-efficient and responsive durum wheat varieties. Drought stress seriously challenges wheat production and productivity. Grain biomass (GB) and related traits were assessed under drought stress and non‐stress for 285 and 185 durum wheat genotypes, respectively, in field and climate chamber experiments to identify quantitative trait loci (QTL). Significant correlations between traits estimated in field and climate chamber trials were observed (p <.001). Genotyping with the wheat 90 K iSelect single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) array revealed 11,919 polymorphic SNP markers distributed across the durum wheat genome. The FarmCPU (Fixed and random model Circulating Probability Unification) method was used for genome‐wide association studies (GWAS). A total of 191 significant (−log10p ≥ 4) marker‐trait associations (MTAs) were detected at a linkage disequilibrium (LD, r2 ≥.2) at 4.78 Mb and were clustered into 70 QTLs. A total of 69 (36%) of the MTAs passed a false discovery rate (FDR) of 5%. The numbers of QTLs detected were 21, 31, 9 and 9 under field drought stress (FDS), field non‐stress (FNS), climate chamber drought stress (CCDS) and climate chamber non‐stress (CCNS) conditions, respectively. About 43% and 57% of the QTLs were located on the A and B genomes, respectively. Some of the detected QTLs were in agreement with previously reported QTLs, while others are novel ones for the traits investigated. QTLs on 1A between 495694477and ‐501944537bp, on 3B between 416256124 and 430507900 bp, on 3B between 745357158 and 759608934 bp, on 4B between 593416763 and 605142497 bp and on 4B between 658785890 and 670511624 bp were selected for validation and may be used to increase grain yield under drought stress in marker‐assisted selection (MAS) schemes. In common root and crown rot (CRR), Bipolaris sorokiniana (Sace.) is one of the important in wheat, causing considerable yield losses globally. Sources of resistance can provide a feasible and effective method of control for plant disease management. However, knowledge on mechanisms of resistance is scarce.We screened 33 wheat genotypes against B. sorokiniana under greenhouse and field conditions. In addition, real‐time quantitative PCR (qPCR) analysis using ten novel candidate gene markers, Cre3, EDS1, LTP5, PGIP, PR‐1, PIEP1, TLP, UGT, Stb6 and PFT, was conducted on leaves and roots, along with changes in activity of antioxidant enzymes, peroxidase, catalase, β‐1,3‐glucanase, and phenolic content for their involvement in disease impact mechanisms.Lowest disease severity was in 'Alvand', followed by 'Baharan' and 'Bam' as resistant genotypes. Quantitative gene expression showed that, although the candidate defence genes were upregulated 1.24‐ to 3.5‐fold in wheat roots and leaves inoculated with B. sorokiniana, they were highly regulated in resistant varieties 'Alvand', 'Mehregan' and 'Bam'. Cre3, a resistance gene to cereal cyst nematode Heterodera filipjevi, was regulated in cultivars resistant to B. sorokiniana. Similar results were obtained for Stb6, a gene resistant to Septoria tritici blotch, EDS1 resistant to powdery mildew, Blumeria graminis, and the genes PR‐1 and UGT resistant to leaf rust, Puccinia triticina. Antioxidant enzyme activity also showed the highest increases in resistant genotypes.In conclusion, the T. aestivum–B. sorokiniana interaction in resistant wheat cultivars uses defence‐related genes and enzymes that protect wheat towards sustainable development. Background: Selenium (Se) fertilizer and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) are known to modulate cadmium (Cd) toxicity in plants. However, the effects of their co-application on wheat growth and soil microbial communities in Cd-contaminated soil are unclear. Results: A pot experiment inoculation with two types of AMF and the application of Se fertilizer under Cd stress in wheat showed that inoculation AMF alone or combined with Se fertilizer significantly increased wheat biomass. Se and AMF alone or in combination significantly reduced available Cd concentration in wheat and soil, especially in the Se combined with Ri treatment. High throughput sequencing of soil samples indicated that Se and AMF application had stronger influence on bacterial community compared to fungal community and the bacterial network seemed to have more complex interconnections than the fungal network, and finally shaped the formation of specific microflora to affect Cd availability. Conclusion: These results indicate that the application of Se and AMF, particularly in combination, could successfully decrease soil Cd availability and relieve the harm of Cd in wheat by modifying rhizosphere soil microbial communities. Climate change‐induced drought stress (DS) poses a significant threat to crop production, emphasizing the need for innovative strategies to mitigate its adverse effects. Prior studies have demonstrated the distinct capacities of salicylic acid (SA) and sodium hydrosulfide (NaHS) to augment plant resilience against drought‐related stressors. However, little is known about how they work together or the specific processes by which they increase DS tolerance. The purpose of this research was to determine how SA and NaHS affected the performance of wheat plants during the growing seasons of 2021–2022 and 2022–2023, when there was a drought. The research employed a block‐randomized experimental layout with split plots, where the primary factors included two irrigation levels: full irrigation (IW1, 100% of water requirement) and deficit irrigation (IW2, 50% of water requirement). Secondary factors included the application of mock control, 0.5 mM SA, and 0.3 mM NaHS, an H2S donor, either individually or in combination, administered before the onset of DS. The application of SA, NaHS, or their combination significantly enhanced wheat plant resistance to DS. Significant increases in a number of physiological markers, including proline content, relative water content (RWC), Fv/Fm, chlorophyll content, and antioxidant enzyme activity, demonstrated this improvement. Furthermore, in drought‐stressed wheat plants, SA and NaHS treatments decreased the amounts of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), malondialdehyde (MDA) content, and electrolyte leakage (EL). In conclusion, our study highlights the possibility of SA and NaHS, whether applied individually or in combination, to improve drought resistance in wheat plants, presenting a viable approach to lessen the effects of climate change on agricultural yield. Studying the long‐term effect of elevated atmospheric CO2 concentration (e[CO2]) on wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) over multiple generations has received increasing attention. Here, five wheat cultivars were grown under ambient CO2 concentration (a[CO2], 400 ppm) and e[CO2] (800 ppm), respectively, for three consecutive generations (G1 to G3) under two nitrogen (N) levels (1N and 2N). Compared to plants grown under a[CO2], e[CO2] increased shoot biomass and grain yield (GY) over three generations and the enhancement was greater in G3 than in G1. However, plant N concentration was lowered by e[CO2] and the reduction was not mitigated by higher N supply. The carbon (C) concentration significantly increased in leaf and stem but decreased in grain, indicating an inhibited C translocation to grain under e[CO2]. Most importantly, these negative impacts were exacerbated in G3. Concentrations of mineral nutrients in grain were significantly lowered by e[CO2] with larger reduction in G3 than in G1 in some micronutrients such as Zn, Cu and Fe. These findings suggest that long‐term exposure to e[CO2] sustained the positive effects on plant growth and production but aggravated the reduction of grain quality over multiple generations. Among the five cultivars, 325Jimai showed the greatest increase in shoot biomass and GY, and a greater sink capacity compared with the other cultivars, indicating its potential for future breeding strategies. Straw is a by-product from cereal cultivation. Using straw surplus as a biofuel is a popular means of its management. However, before being used for fuel purposes, straw can be successfully used as a sorbent. The present study investigated the sorption properties of wheat straw (Triticum aestivum L.) modified with ammonia water and epichlorohydrin against the reactive dye Reactive Black 5 (RB5). The tested sorbents were characterized based on FTIR, elemental analysis (C/N content), and pHPZC. The scope of the research included, among others, research on the effect of pH (pH 2–11) on the RB5 sorption efficiency, research on sorption kinetics, and determination of the maximum sorption capacity of the tested sorbents. The sorption efficiency of RB5 on the tested sorbents was the highest at pH 2–3. The experimental data from the research on the sorption kinetics of RB5 were best described by a pseudo-second-order model. The introduction of primary amine groups to the structure of sorbents significantly increased their sorption capacity towards RB5. The obtained sorption capacity of the aminated straw and the aminated straw pre-activated with epichlorohydrin was 24.12 mg RB5/g and 91.04 mg RB5/g, respectively, and it was higher by 44.3% and 444.5% compared to the unmodified straw. In this paper, wheat straw was used as raw materials, and the straw was converted into lactic acid, oxalic acid and fumaric acid under alkaline hydrothermal conditions. Improve the yield of organic acid by optimizing the reaction conditions such as NaOH concentration, reaction time and reaction temperature. The optimum reaction conditions were as follows: NaOH concentration 1.5 mol/L, reaction temperature 250ºC, reaction time 3 hours, total organic acid yield 13.5%, lactic acid yield 12.1%. The results can provide a new way for the green production of organic acids, and realize the efficient utilization of agricultural waste, reduce environmental pollution. Field experiments were performed in 2019 and 2020 to explore yield performance and biomass accumulation dynamics for different direct‐seeded rice methods after wheat straw return. The experimental treatments included two direct‐seeded rice methods (dry direct‐seeded rice and wet direct‐seeded rice) and two wheat straw return treatments (with and without wheat straw return). Wheat straw return had a negative impact on the yield and biomass of direct‐seeded rice. Compared with wet direct‐seeded rice, dry direct‐seeded rice was more negatively affected, with yield and biomass reduced by 6.7%–7.6% and 5.4%–6.5%, respectively. The yield loss was mainly associated with insufficient total spikelet numbers caused by reduced panicle numbers. A lower maximum tiller number caused by the restricted seedling tillering capacity was partly responsible for the inadequate panicle numbers in direct‐seeded rice after wheat straw return. Wheat straw return reduced the maximum and average rate of biomass accumulation, shortened the duration of effective biomass accumulation, and delayed the days to achieve the maximum rate of biomass accumulation for direct‐seeded rice. The negative effect of wheat straw return on direct‐seeded rice was concentrated mainly in the early stage; reduction in the average biomass accumulation rate in the early stage accounted for 61.1%–75.3% of the reduction in total average rate. Wet direct‐seeded rice had a higher average rate and amount of biomass accumulation at the early stage, a greater maximum tiller number, as well as a stronger photosynthetic ability and grain filling ability after heading, which contributed to improving panicle number and total spikelet number, ultimately increasing yield and biomass compared with dry direct‐seeded rice. These results demonstrate that wheat straw return reduced yield and biomass, mainly by inhibiting growth in the early stage of direct‐seeded rice. Developing an efficient and continuous biomass saccharification system provides significant insight into sustainable energy. In the present work, a constant and effective bacterial saccharification system was developed to degrade wheat straw (WS) into sugars. Newly identified Bacillus altitudinis X-10 was selected to optimize sugar release from wheat straw via Box-Behnken Design (BBD). The released reducing sugars were 38.5 mg/g under the optimal fermentation conditions of pH 6.98, a temperature of 29.5°C, and a solid-liquid ratio of 0.84%. In addition, B. altitudinis X-10 can produce low-cost enzyme cocktails, which contain remarkable xylanase activity (2.76 ± 0.19 U/ml). Roots are the main sensing organ, initiating multiple signaling pathways in response to abiotic factors, including nutrients, drought, and salt stress. A focus on improving the root system architecture is a key strategy to mitigate these stresses in wheat crop. In the present study, a diversity panel comprising indigenous landraces and historical cultivars from Pakistan was characterized for the root system architecture (RSA) and important loci were identified using a genome‐wide association study (GWAS). RSA of the diversity panel was characterized 30 days after sowing in brunch tubes, and root images were taken. A high‐throughput root imaging analysis using Rhizovision software was performed by setting the scale to extract the eight RSA traits and four plant biomass‐related traits. GWAS identified 323 association signals for 12 root and biomass traits present on all wheat chromosomes, while the most important and reliable genetic loci (based on pleotropic loci and candidate genes) were identified on chromosomes 2A, 2B, 5A, 5D, 6A, 7B, and 7D for RSA. SNP annotation and transcriptome profiling identified nine candidate genes regulating the RSA and plant biomass traits, including ROOTLESS WITH UNDETECTABLE MERISTEM1, MYB TRANSCRIPTION FACTOR4, BRASSINOSTEROID INSENSITIVE1, SLENDER RICE1, AUXIN‐RESPONSIVE FACTOR25, SCARECROW, NARROW LEAF2, PIN‐FORMED1 AND PHOSPHATE TRANSCRIPTION FACTOR1. Selenium (Se) biofortification by seed treatments has been poorly explored in wheat due to the difficulties in establishing seed treatments without compromising plant productive traits. We investigated the effects of Se seed soaking as a pre-sowing treatment in bread wheat. Five soaking periods and six Se concentrations were assessed on germination and seedling traits and compared to unsoaked seeds. Twelve hours of soaking was found beneficial for most tested Se concentrations. Then, we evaluated the effects of untreated, 0, 2.5 and 25 mM Se in 12 h seed soaking treatments along the wheat crop cycle under water-deficit (WD) and well-watered (WW) conditions in a pot experiment. Our results evidenced that 12 h of 2.5 mM Se soaking did not affect the germination percentage, and speed-up seedling emergence resulted in a considerable Se seed uptake. These plants also displayed enhanced antioxidant capacity and vegetative biomass accumulation, especially under WD. The treatment with 25 mM of Se negatively affected aerial biomass, suggesting potential toxicity. Physiological responses of Se-treated plants remained unchanged, as well as grain traits. Altogether, we propose that 12 h soaking with 2.5 mM Se is a promissory pre-sowing approach to enrich bread wheat grain and straw, particularly under water-limited environments. The co-pyrolysis characteristics and the thermochemical transformation of organic carbon of oil shale mixed wheat straw biomass were investigated at different temperature stages (t=348, 476, 521 ℃) by the fixed bed product classification recovery. GC-MS was used to analyze the structure of pyrolysis products qualitatively and quantitatively. The results show that the synergistic effect is mainly reflected in the catalysis of minerals in the pyrolysis process of biomass in oil shale at t=348 ℃, and it is also reflected in the influence of minerals in biomass ash at t=476 ℃ on critical asphalt molecular cracking process. The H/C atomic ratio of biomass pyrolysis products is significantly increased by the mixed pyrolysis, and the transfer of oxygen elements from pyrolysis oil to pyrolysis gas is promoted to improve the production of shale oil and promote the early pyrolysis of long straight carbon chains. The potent utilization of hemicellulosic fraction, which comprises one-third of carbohydrates in lignocellulosic biomass (LCB), is vital to strengthen the bioethanol production from it. Most studies on bioethanol production from LCB focused on cellulosic fraction only, or very low ethanol productivity is reported from hemicellulosic fraction. The present study investigated a process to convert the hemicellulosic fraction of wheat straw biomass to bioethanol effectively using Scheffersomyces stipitis. This work aimed to develop and demonstrate a systematic approach for scaling up the fermentation process, keeping the volumetric oxygen transfer coefficient (k L a) nearly constant in different scale bioreactors. It was found that 99.11±0.13% of synthetic xylose and 99.04±0.10% of lignocellulosic xylose were converted to bioethanol with a yield and productivity of 0.4706±0.0022 g/g and 1.5325±0.0020 g/Lh; 0.4290±0.0030 g/g and 0.7399±0.0043 g/Lh, respectively at an optimum k L a of 0.5776 (0.5735, 0.5817) min−1 and 0.6924 (0.6887, 0.6961) min−1, respectively in a 0.5 L bioreactor. After that, these optimum k L a were validated in 1 L and 5 L bioreactors. Several biogeochemical models have been applied to understand the potential effects of management practices on soil organic carbon (SOC) sequestration, crop growth, and yield. In this study, the denitrification and decomposition (DNDC) model was used to simulate soil SOC dynamics and harvested C-biomass in rice–wheat rotation under organic/inorganic fertilization with conventional tillage (CT) and reduced tillage (RT). Before calibration, DNDC underpredicted harvestable grain C-biomass of rice where percent difference (PD) varied from 29.22% to 42.14%, and over-simulated grain C-biomass of wheat where PD was −55.01% with 50% nitrogen–phosphorus–potassium (NPK) and 50% animal manure applied under the CT treatment. However, after calibration by adjusting default values of soil and crop parameters, DNDC simulated harvestable grain C-biomass of both crops very close to observed values (e.g., average PD ranged from −2.81% to −6.17%). DNDC also predicted the effects of nutrient management practices on grain C-biomass of rice/wheat under CT/RT using d-index (0.76 to 0.96) and the calculated root mean squared error (RMSE of 165.36 to 494.18 kg C ha−1). DNDC simulated SOC trends for rice–wheat using measured values of several statistical indices. Regression analysis between modeled and observed SOC dynamics was significant with R2 ranging from 0.35 to 0.46 (p < 0.01), and intercept ranging from 0.30 to 1.34 (p < 0.65). Leaf area index (LAI) and above-ground biomass are both vital indicators for evaluating crop growth and development, while rapid and non-destructive estimation of crop LAI and above-ground biomass is of considerable significance for crop field management. Owing to the advantages of repeatable and high-throughput observations, spectral technology provides a feasible method for obtaining LAI and above-ground biomass of crops. In the present study, the spectral, LAI and above-ground biomass data of winter wheat were collected, and 7 species (14 in total) were calculated based on the original and first-order differential spectrum correlation spectral indices with LAI. Then, the correlation matrix method was used for correlation with LAI. The optimal wavelength combination was extracted, and the results were calculated as the optimal spectral index related to LAI. The calculation process of the optimal spectral index related to above-ground biomass was the same as that aforementioned. Finally, the optimal spectral index was divided into three groups of model input variables, winter wheat LAI and above-ground biomass estimation models were constructed using support vector machine (SVM), random forest (RF) and a back propagation neural network (BPNN), and the models were verified. The results show that the correlation coefficient between the highest of the optimal spectral indices, the LAI, and the above-ground biomass of winter wheat exceeded 0.6, and the correlation was good. The methods for establishing the optimal estimation models for LAI and above-ground biomass of winter wheat are all modeling methods in which the input variables are the combination of the first-order differential spectral index (combination 2) and RF. The R2 of the LAI estimation model validation set was 0.830, the RMSE was 0.276, and the MRE was 6.920; the R2 of the above-ground biomass estimation model validation set was 0.682, RMSE was 235.016, MRE was 4.336, and the accuracies of both models were high. The present research results can provide a theoretical basis for crop monitoring based on spectral technology and provide an application reference for the rapid estimation of crop growth parameters. Context. Although waterlogging is known to decrease grain yield in wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) and barley (Hordeum vulgare L.), its effect on plant N traits is still unknow. Aims. This study evaluated biomass N dynamics and partitioning to grains, in wheat and barley plants subjected to waterlogging. Methods. Under contrasting environmental conditions, two pot experiments exposing wheat and barley plants to waterlogging events for 15–20 days at five different developmental stages, from emergence to maturity were performed. Grain N concentration, grain N content, biomass N concentration, N utilisation efficiency (NUE) and N remobilisation were recorded. Key results. Both species responded similarly to waterlogging for most N traits. Reductions in grain N content differed according to the moment waterlogging occurred. The greatest reductions (46–77% compared to the control) being for waterlogging from the beginning of stem elongation to anthesis, which also showed the highest reductions in N remobilisation, N uptake at maturity, and N partitioning to the grains, but only a slight decrease in NUE. Grain N concentration raised drastically (up to 45 mg N g DW−1 ) with minimal grain yields. N concentration of aboveground biomass decreased during waterlogging, recovering control values at maturity. N content at maturity was related to the total biomass. Conclusions. Waterlogging differentially reduced N uptake and remobilisation to grains of wheat and barley depending on the developmental stage when water excess occurred. Implications. The impact of waterlogging on N economy of wheat and barley appears indirect and predominantly related to carrying effects of the stress on carbon economy due to growth reductions. Spring wheat is currently dominating wheat production in Norway. The introduction of combine harvesting in the 1950s spurred breeding efforts to improve lodging and preharvest sprouting resistance, and to integrate good breadmaking quality in the locally adapted germplasm. Release of landmark cultivars Runar and Reno in the 1970s revitalized the country's production and marked the onset of modern wheat cultivation in Norway. Since that time, new cultivars have been developed but little is known about the genetic basis of the achieved yield gains. We collected 21 representative cultivars released since 1972 in Norway and tested them in a multiyear field trial including two fertilization rates: 75 and 150 kg ha–1 N. We assessed grain yield, plant height, heading, maturity, length of grain filling period, grain protein content, protein yield, aboveground biomass, harvest index, grain weight, test weight, grains per spike, grains per square meter, and spikes per square meter and their response to fertilization. We document an annual increase in grain yield of 17.8 kg ha–1 (0.34%), at both rates of N fertilization. None of the traits exhibited significant genotype × management interaction. Wheat breeding has led to the development of higher‐yielding cultivars with higher protein yield that mature later, have a prolonged grain‐filling period, and produce more grains per spike and grains per unit area. Increasing temperature is a key component of global climate change, affecting crop growth and productivity worldwide. Wheat is a major cereal crop grown in various parts of the globe, which is affected severely by heat stress. The morphological parameters affected include germination, seedling establishment, source-sink activity, leaf area, shoot and root growth. The physiological parameters such as photosynthesis, respiration, leaf senescence, water and nutrient relation are also affected by heat. At the cellular level, heat stress leads to the generation of reactive oxygen species that disrupt the membrane system of thylakoid, chloroplast and plasma membrane. The deactivation of the photosystem, reduction in photosynthesis and inactivation of rubisco affect the production of photoassimilates and their allocation. This ultimately affects anthesis, grain filling, size, number and maturity of wheat grains, which hamper crop productivity. The interplay of various systems comprising antioxidants and hormones plays a crucial role in imparting heat stress tolerance in wheat. Thus, implementation of various omics technologies could foster in-depth insights on heat stress effects, eventually devising heat stress mitigation strategies by conventional and modern breeding to develop heat-tolerant wheat varieties. In order to realize the rapid and non-destructive monitoring of wheat biomass, field wheat trials were conducted based on different densities, nitrogen fertilizers and varieties, and unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) was used to obtain RGB images in the pre-wintering stage, jointing stage, booting stage and flowering stage of wheat. The color and texture feature indices of wheat were obtained using image processing, and wheat biomass was obtained by manual field sampling in the same period. Then the relationship between different color and texture feature indices and wheat biomass was analyzed to select the suitable feature index for wheat biomass estimation. The results showed that there was a high correlation between image color index and wheat biomass in different stages, the values of r were between 0.463 and 0.911 (P<0.05). However, the correlation between image texture feature index and wheat biomass was poor, only 5 index values reached significant or extremely significant correlation level. Based on the above results, the color indices with the highest correlation to wheat biomass or the combining indices of color and texture features in different growth stages were used to construct estimation model of wheat biomass. The models were validated using independently measured biomass data, and the correlation between simulated and measured values reached the extremely significant level (P<0.01), and root mean square error (RMSE) was smaller. The R2 of color index model in the four stages were 0.538, 0.631, 0.708 and 0.464, and RMSE were 27.88, 516.99, 868.26 and 1539.81 kg/ha, respectively. The R2 of the model combined with color and texture index were 0.571, 0.658, 0.753 and 0.515, and RMSE were 25.49, 443.20, 816.25 and 1396.97 kg/ha, respectively. This indicated that the estimated results using the models were reliable and accurate. Renewable biomass fuels are frequently used for power generation. Biomass ash causes bed agglomeration in fluidized bed boilers due to the formation of alkali silicate melts. Very few prior studies have tested dolomite and kaolin bed additives for agglomeration mitigation with agricultural biomasses. In this work, pelletized miscanthus and wheat straw were tested in a pilot-scale 65kW th fluidized bed combustor with varying dosages of dolomite and kaolin on a silica sand bed. Neither additive improved defluidization time with wheat straw, whereas additive use at all dosages prevented bed defluidization with miscanthus. Agglomerates were studied through a novel, detailed SEM/EDX analysis across structural features. SEM/EDX analysis presented evidence of chemical reaction between both additives and fuels. Potassium in ash migrated into kaolin particle at depths of up to 60 μm. With dolomite, calcium and magnesium raised melt temperatures. Thermochemical modelling of the ash and additive combinations predicted that additive use would substantially reduce ash melt formation. It is proposed that the wheat straw pellet acted as a "ready-made" agglomerate structure due to release of molten ash to the pellet surface which bed material then sticks to, hence the lack of change to defluidization time regardless of additive use. This study aims to improve the quality and quantity of winter wheat by using the potential of combining the use of cold plasma and waste biorefinery products for improving wheat yield. Plasma was applied by a radio frequency (RF) plasma reactor operated with air for 180 s and 50 W. The waste biorefinery products, including pyroligneous acid, biochar, and azolla compost, were used as plant nutrition. The effects of cold plasma treatment and waste biorefinery products were determined by measuring plant photosynthesis, grain yield, and content of chlorophyll, carotenoids, anthocyanin, protein, and starch. The experiment was conducted during the cropping seasons 2016−18 in a randomized complete block design with four replications. The combination of cold plasma and pyroligneous acid increased the grain yield up to 40.0%. The photosynthesis rate was improved up to 39.3%, and total chlorophyll content up to 48.3% in both years. Seed plasma treatment combined with biochar application increased the starch content by 36.8%. Adding azolla compost increased the protein content by 35.4%. Using seed plasma treatment with biochar increased the microbial biomass carbon by 16.0%. The application of plasma and azolla compost increased the microbial biomass nitrogen by 29.0%. The study evaluated the variation of some physiological indices and productivity elements in wheat, in response to treatments with biodynamic preparations. Two preparations were used, applied singly and in combination, at the recommended dose (P500 and P501) or at half the dose (P500/2; P501/2), in five experimental variants (V1 - P5001; V2 - P500/2; V3 - P500; V4 - P500+P501; V5 - P500+P501/2). A control variant with untreated plants V6(Ct) was used for comparison. Plant height (PH, cm), biomass weight (BW, g) and grain number on ear (GNE, No) were evaluated. Plant height (PH) values ranged from 49 to 69 ±1.66 cm, biomass weight (BW) relative to one plant (mean values) ranged from 3.36 to 7.50 ±0.38 g, and grains number in ear (GNE) ranged from 20 - 38 ± 1.58. The GNE variation according to BW was described by a spline model, in conditions of 00162. 0 e = . The regression analysis facilitated the obtaining of an equation that described the variation of GNE as a function of PH and BW in statistical safety conditions, R2 = 0.998, p <0.001. According to PCA, PC1 explained 97.486% of the variance, and PC1 explained 2.0343% of the variance. It was found that in the case of variant V1 (product P501) there were negative increases, which shows that administered alone the product did not have a favourable effect on wheat plants, under the study conditions. This work has examined the effect of cellulose based substrates such as rice straw and wheat straw on the treatment of Reverse osmosis (RO) reject wastewater in a single chamber microbial fuel cell (SCMFC). At a substrate concentration of 125 mg/L (125 mg of substrate in 1 L of RO reject wastewater), the two type of MFCs with rice straw and wheat straw as substrates were operated along with the third one as the control without any substrate. MFC with the wheat straw as the substrate outperformed the MFC with rice straw substrate in respect to maximum power density and total dissolved solid (TDS) removal of 127 mW/m2 and 71.88 percent, respectively. Performance of MFC with the three concentrations of 125, 250, and 500 mg/L of the chosen substrate (wheat straw) were compared. Substrate concentration of 125 mg/L was found to be the most effective. Introduction: Clavulanic acid is the first B-Lactamase inhibitor that has been used clinically since 1981. This inhibitor is the natural product of the fermentation of Streptomyces clavuligerus and is useful for protecting B-lactams against lots of important B-lactamases such as Group A B-lactamases and Group D Cloxacillin lysis enzymes. The aim of this study was to optimize the composition of the fermentation medium in terms of the carbon source in the production of clavulanic acid. Materials and Methods: In this experiment, the influence of different concentrations of glycerol 15 g/L, wheat bran 17 g/L, and glucose 18.1 g/L on the production of clavulanic acid was tested. After passing the levels of sporulation, seeding, and fermentation, the influence of different concentrations of glucose, wheat bran, and glycerol on pH rates, biomass, and morphology of Streptomyces clavuligerus was tested by the light microscope. The concentration of clavulanic acid produced was measured by spectrophotometry. Results: According to the results, the highest production of clavulanic acid in all substrates was on the eighth day. The use of glycerol at a concentration of 15 g/l produced 238.3 mg/l clavulanic acid, which had the highest production rate and also reduced production costs. Discussion and Conclusion: Due to the price, availability, and also increasing the production of glycerol and wheat bran (compared to corn oil), the production of clavulanic acid in environments containing glycerol and wheat bran is easier and more convenient. Remote sensing-based crop harvest index (HI) information is of great significance for crop yield estimation, crop variety breeding and evaluation of crop cultivation effectiveness. The method for estimating HI using fG (fraction of post-anthesis phase biomass accumulation) has been widely used and shows good performance at the field scale, but the upscaled regional application of this method had not been achieved using remote sensing information. In this paper, a remote sensing method for estimating the dynamic harvest index (D-HI) based on the remote sensing-based dynamic fG (D-fG) was proposed to solve this problem and was verified based on D-fG and D-HI measurements. This approach was based on accurate D-fG parameters estimated by using the NDSI constructed from hyperspectral sensitive band centres. The results showed that the D-fG estimation, the overall verification accuracy of the D-HI estimation at different growth stages and the accuracy of the D-HI estimation in a single growth stage were highly accurate. In the overall D-HI estimation verification, the normalized root square mean error (NRMSE) was between 10.83% and 14.45%, and the mean relative error (MRE) was between 9.62% and 13.99%. At maturity, the D-HI estimation accuracy based on band centre λ (732 nm, 834 nm) was the highest, and the NRMSE and MRE were 9.62% and 9.27%, respectively. Based on these results, the proposed method is feasible and effective at accurately estimating the D-HI, thus providing a technical reference for the use of satellite remote sensing data to obtain regional crop HI information based on fG.
