This paper presents an effective approach for solving economic load dispatch problems contemplating the scheduling a set of thermal generating units to produce a specific power at low consumption costs. These problems can be thought of as nonlinear, non-convex, and highly constrained optimization problems with a large number of local minima. To cope with the above issues in solving such problems, a new meta-heuristic named capuchin search algorithm was adopted. To boost the search performance of this algorithm as well as to mitigate its early convergence and regression to the local optimum, it was hybridized with another algorithm and improved using several positive amendments. First, a memory element was added to this algorithm to ameliorate its position and velocity update mechanisms in order to exploit the most encouraging candidate solutions. Second, two adaptive parametric functions were used to manage the exploration and exploitation features of this algorithm and balance them appropriately. Finally, the hybridization was made using the gradient-based optimizer to strengthen the intensification ability of this algorithm and balance its searching ability to fulfill sensible search performance. The proficiency of the proposed algorithm was divulged by assessing it on computationally difficult economic load dispatch problems under 6 different tests with a generator of 3, 13, 40, 80, and 140 units, each with different constraints and load conditions. The proposed algorithm provided the best performance among many other competitors. This paper considers the offline assignment of fixed priorities in partitioned preemptive real-time systems where tasks have precedence constraints. This problem is crucial in this type of systems, as having a good fixed priority assignment allows for an efficient use of the processing resources while meeting all the deadlines. In the literature, we can find several proposals to solve this problem, which offer varying trade-offs between the quality of their results and their computational complexities. In this paper , we propose a new approach, leveraging existing algorithms that are widely exploited in the field of Machine Learning: Gradient Descent, the Adam Optimizer, and Gradient Noise. We show how to adapt these algorithms to the problem of fixed priority assignment in conjunction with existing worst-case response time analyses. We demonstrate the performance of our proposal on synthetic task-sets with different sizes. This evaluation shows that our proposal is able to find more schedulable solutions than previous heuristics, approximating optimal but intractable algorithms such as MILP or brute-force, while requiring reasonable execution times. In this paper, we propose a control framework for intelligent surgical robots under the Remote Center of Motion (RCM). The goal of a surgical robot is to assist surgeons in performing complex surgeries. RCM constraint implies that the surgical tip attached to the end-effector of the surgical robot does not slide away from the point of the incision while performing surgery. Implementation of a control algorithm to comply with RCM constraints is a complicated task because of the nonlinear model of the surgical robots and stringent conditions of accuracy imposed by the patient's safety. This paper proposes an optimization-driven approach to perform the surgical maneuver under RCM constraints. We then applied a bio-inspired optimization algorithm to solve the problem efficiently. For testing the performance of ZNNBAS, we used MATLAB to simulate a surgical procedure. A 7-DOF surgical robot (KUKA LBR IIWA 7) was used as a test bench for running the simulations. The simulation results show that the ZNNBAS is comparable with BAS, PSO, and GA and efficiently and robustly performed the task commanded maneuvers while enforcing the RCM constraints. The integration of the variable renewable energies makes the operation conditions of the power system ever-changeable. Consequently, the power system operational reliability evaluation is increasingly important. This paper introduces the concept of decision-dependent uncertainty (DDU) in the operational reliability evaluation. Unlike the exogenous uncertainties, DDU reveals that the decisions of the system operation could significantly affect the resolution of the uncertainties which influence the reliability metrics. In this paper, the proposed DDU modeling method links the device reliability indices, i.e., the forced outage rate, and the operational-decision variables. The impacts of DDU on operational reliability are analyzed based on a reliability-constrained stochastic unit commitment (UC) model. An adaptive reliability improvement UC (ARIUC) algorithm is proposed to efficiently solve the problem. In order to solve the problems of BBO such as insufficient search scope in the early stage and easy to fall into local optimization in the later stage, this paper proposed an improved El-BBO which based on El. Firstly, the algorithm searched for new habitat around the original habitat, it enhanced the diversity of the initialization population. Secondly, the algorithm made improved habitat expansion, it improved the convergence efficiency of the algorithm. Finally, the algorithm used gradient de scent to make quadratic convergence in the field of optimal solution, which improved the convergence accuracy of the algorithm. This paper carried out 50 Monte Carlo experiments on 12 optimized test functions commonly used in CEC2014, the experimental results show that the overall performance of El-BBO is better than the other three intelligent optimization algorithms in terms of optimal fitness value, average fitness value and standard deviation. Optimization problems are prevalent in almost all areas and hence optimization algorithms are crucial for a myriad of real-world applications. Deterministic optimization algorithms tend to be computationally costly and time-consuming. Hence, heuristic and metaheuristic algorithms are more favoured as they provide near-optimal solutions in an acceptable amount of time. Swarm intelligence algorithms are being increasingly used for optimization problems owing to their simplicity and good performance. The Dragonfly Algorithm (DA) is one which is inspired by the swarming behaviours of dragonflies, and it has been proven to have a superior performance than other algorithms in multiple applications. Hence, it is worth considering its application to the traveling salesman problem which is a predominant discrete optimization problem. The original DA is only suitable for solving continuous optimization problems and, although there is a binary version of the algorithm, it is not easily adapted for solving discrete optimization problems like TSP. We have previously proposed a discrete adapted DA algorithm suitable for TSP. However, it has low effectiveness, and it has not been used for large TSP problems. In this paper, we propose an optimized discrete adapted DA by using the steepest ascent hill climbing algorithm as a local search. The algorithm is applied to a TSP problem modelling a package delivery system in the Kuala Lumpur area and to benchmark TSP problems, and it is found to have a higher effectiveness than the discrete adapted DA and some other swarm intelligence algorithms. Adversarial sample generation problem is a hot issue in the security field of deep learning. Evolutionary algorithm has been widely used to solve this problem in recent years because of its good global search ability. However, existing methods still suffer from the "curse of dimensionality" when attacking high-resolution images. In this paper, a two-stage frequency domain generation algorithm of black-box adversarial samples based on differential evolution is proposed. In the first stage, a representative image-guided differential evolution method is proposed to quickly generate a universal adversarial perturbation with a high attack success rate in the frequency-domain. In the second stage, a space reduction strategy based on frequency-domain pixel blocks is designed to reduce the search space and alleviate the problem of "curse of dimensionality". In addition, a new space–frequency interaction sensitivity measure is introduced to evaluate the similarity between the adversarial samples and the original images. The adversarial perturbations obtained by the measure are more in line with the subjective perception of the human eye. This document presents in detail the mathematical formulation of the second renewable energy auction in Colombia, used for the allocation of long-term energy contracts, which was carried out through a double-sided auction, defined in Resolutions 4-0590 and 4-0591 of 2019 from the UPME. The mixed integer linear programming model developed in this paper solves an optimization problem that seeks the combination of offers that maximizes the benefit of the consumer, subject to operational and economic constraints proposed by regulatory mechanisms. The weapon target assignment (WTA) problem is an important task to tactical arrangements in military commitment operations. It describes the optimal method to allocate defense in opposition to threats in fighting situations. It is an NP-complete issue in which no accurate outcome for all conceivable situations is known. The time performance of created algorithms is a major challenge in modeling the WTA problem, which has only been lately considered in related papers. This article improves the recently developed algorithm called improved Tunicate Swarm Algorithm (iTSA) which is inspired by the natural behavior of tunicates to solve the WTA problem. Addressing non-convexity plays a fundamental role in solving the optimal electricity-gas flow models. In this paper, an improved spatial branch-and-bound algorithm is proposed to solve the non-convex problem, which is formulated as a mixed-integer bilinear programming, for its exact solution. The core of the algorithm is to divide the non-convex model into convex and small sub-models by branching on specific continuous variables, so that the non-convex problem can be equivalent to a rooted tree for exploration. The exactness of the algorithm is guaranteed by the same criterion as the classical branch-and-bound algorithm. To alleviate the computational burden, a novel two-stage spatial branching strategy is developed to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of the branching operations. The performance of the proposed algorithm is verified on two integrated electricity-gas systems with different sizes. Numerical results demonstrate that our method achieves a balance among feasibility, optimality, and efficiency. The comparison with another 6 convexification-based methods, 3 state-of-the-art non-convex optimization solvers, and 2 spatial branch-and-bound algorithms with classical branching rules further shows the superiority of our algorithm. The metaheuristic optimization algorithms are relatively new optimization algorithms introduced to solve optimization problems in recent years. For example, the firefly algorithm (FA) is one of the metaheuristic algorithms inspired by the fireflies' flashing behavior. However, its weakness in terms of exploration and early convergence has been pointed out. In this paper, two approaches were proposed to improve the FA. In the first proposed approach, a new improved opposition-based learning FA (IOFA) method was presented to accelerate the convergence and improve the FA's exploration capability. In the second proposed approach, a symbiotic organisms search (SOS) algorithm improved the exploration and exploitation of the first approach; two new parameters set these two goals, and the second approach was named IOFASOS. The purpose of the second method is that in the process of the SOS algorithm, the whole population is effective in the IOFA method to find solutions in the early stages of implementation, and with each iteration, fewer solutions are affected in the population. The experiments on 24 standard benchmark functions were conducted, and the first proposed approach showed a better performance in the small and medium dimensions and exhibited a relatively moderate performance in the higher dimensions. In contrast, the second proposed approach was better in increasing dimensions. In general, the empirical results showed that the two new approaches outperform other algorithms in most mathematical benchmarking functions. Thus, The IOFASOS model has more efficient solutions. Weighted multi-view clustering (MVC) aims to combine the complementary information of multi-view data (such as image data with different types of features) in a weighted manner to obtain a consistent clustering result. However, when the cluster-wise weights across views are vastly different, most existing weighted MVC methods may fail to fully utilize the complementary information, because they are based on view-wise weight learning and can not learn the fine-grained cluster-wise weights. Additionally, extra parameters are needed for most of them to control the weight distribution sparsity or smoothness, which are hard to tune without prior knowledge. To address these issues, in this paper we propose a novel and effective Cluster-weighted mUlti-view infoRmation bottlEneck (CURE) clustering algorithm, which can automatically learn the cluster-wise weights to discover the discriminative clusters across multiple views and thus can enhance the clustering performance by properly exploiting the cluster-level complementary information. To learn the cluster-wise weights, we design a new weight learning scheme by exploring the relation between the mutual information of the joint distribution of a specific cluster (containing a group of data samples) and the weight of this cluster. Finally, a novel draw-and-merge method is presented to solve the optimization problem. In this paper, an evolutionary optimization procedure is presented to generate band-pass metasurface-based filters in terahertz regime. As a measure of novelty, pass-band, transition, and out-band characteristics are investigated separately, all of which result in different metasurfaces for filtering applications. The presented approach is defined based on random hill climbing algorithm, regarding the established link between Matlab and HFSS software. A metasurface-based filter with specific properties is considered as the main problem to be solved by the optimization method. Moreover, the fuzzy theory, mean square method, and weighting coefficient procedure are considered to define an efficient fitness function evaluation approach. Also, a step-by-step procedure is used to generate desired structures with a great note of efficiency. The final generated structure has magnificent characteristics including sharp transitions together with transmittance around 0.68 and less than 0.04 at pass-band and out-band regions, respectively. The nonlinear programming (NLP) problem to solve distribution-level optimal power flow (D-OPF) poses convergence issues and does not scale well for unbalanced distribution systems. The existing scalable D-OPF algorithms either use approximations that are not valid for an unbalanced power distribution system, or apply relaxation techniques to the nonlinear power flow equations that do not guarantee a feasible power flow solution. In this paper, we propose scalable D-OPF algorithms that simultaneously achieve optimal and feasible solutions by solving multiple iterations of approximate, or relaxed, D-OPF subproblems of low complexity. The first algorithm is based on a successive linear approximation of the nonlinear power flow equations around the current operating point, where the D-OPF solution is obtained by solving multiple iterations of a linear programming (LP) problem. The second algorithm is based on the relaxation of the nonlinear power flow equations as conic constraints together with directional constraints, which achieves optimal and feasible solutions over multiple iterations of a second-order cone programming (SOCP) problem. It is demonstrated that the proposed algorithms are able to reach an optimal and feasible solution while significantly reducing the computation time as compared to an equivalent NLP D-OPF model for the same distribution system. With the proliferation of distributed generators and energy storage systems, traditional passive consumers in power systems have been gradually evolving into the so-called “prosumers,” i.e., proactive consumers, which can both produce and consume power. To encourage energy exchange among prosumers, energy sharing is increasingly adopted, which is usually formulated as a generalized Nash game (GNG). In this paper, a distributed approach is proposed to seek the Generalized Nash equilibrium (GNE) of the energy sharing game. To this end, we first prove the strong monotonicity of the game. Then, the GNG is converted into an equivalent optimization problem. An algorithm based on Nesterov's methods is thereby devised to solve the equivalent problem and consequently find the GNE in a distributed manner. The convergence of the proposed algorithm is proved rigorously based on the nonexpansive operator theory. Box-constrained optimization problems in the real m × n matrix space have been widely applied in big data mining. However, efficient solution of them is still a challenge. In this paper, a new nonmonotone line search rule is first proposed by extending the well-known ones and inheriting their advantages. Then, by analyzing and exploiting properties of this rule, a new nonmonotone spectral projected gradient algorithm is developed to solve the box-constrained optimization problems in the matrix space. Global convergence of the developed algorithm is also established. Numerical tests are conducted on a series of randomly generated test problems and those in the set of benchmark test problems. Compared with other existing nonmonotone line search rules, our rule shows its advantages in terms of the significantly reduced number of function evaluations and significantly reduced number of iterations. To further validate applicability of this research, we apply the studied optimization problem and the developed algorithm to solve the problems of image clustering. In recent years, many researchers have utilized metaheuristic optimization algorithms along with fuzzy logic theory in their studies for various purposes. The harmony search (HS) algorithm is one of the metaheuristic optimization algorithms that is widely employed in different studies along with fuzzy logic (FL) theory. FL theory is a mathematical approach to expressing uncertainty by applying the conceptualization of fuzziness in a system. This review paper presents an extensive review of published papers based on the combination of HS and FL systems. In this regard, the functional characteristics of models obtained from integration of FL and HS have been reported in various articles, and the performance of each study is investigated. The basic concept of the FL approach and its derived models are introduced to familiarize readers with the principal mechanisms of FL models. Moreover, appropriate descriptions of the primary classifications acquired from the coexistence of FL and HS methods for specific purposes are reviewed. The results show that the high efficiency of HS to improve the exploration of FL in achieving the optimal solution on the one hand, and the capability of fuzzy inference systems to provide more flexible and dynamic adaptation of the HS parameters based on human perception on the other hand, can be a powerful combination for solving optimization problems. Nature-inspired metaheuristic algorithms remain a strong trend in optimization. Human-inspired optimization algorithms should be more intuitive and relatable. This paper proposes a novel optimization algorithm inspired by a human search party. We hypothesize the behavioral model of a search party searching for a treasure. Motivated by the search party's behavior, we abstract the "Divide, Conquer, Assemble" (DCA) approach. The DCA approach allows us to parallelize the traditional gradient descent algorithm in a strikingly simple manner. Essentially, multiple gradient descent instances with different learning rates are run parallelly, periodically sharing information. We call it the search party gradient descent (SPGD) algorithm. Experiments performed on a diverse set of classical benchmark functions show that our algorithm is good at optimizing. We believe our algorithm's apparent lack of complexity will equip researchers to solve problems efficiently. • We consider active sound control with preservation of desired sound. • We apply a recently developed nonlocal control to tackle this problem. • We solve the problem of minimization of the number of controls and sensors for the first time. • We demonstrate that the optimal nonlocal control is not sensitive to the presence of desired sound. In the active sound control problem considered in the paper, a quite arbitrary closed region is acoustically shielded from ambient noise generated outside via implementation of secondary sound sources which are situated at the perimeter of the domain to be protected. It is presumed that the information available for the operation of control is only limited by the acoustic field that can be measured on a closed surface around the shielded region. The problem becomes much more complicated if there are desired sound sources situated inside the shielded region. In this case the input field is determined by contributions from noise, desired sound and controls. It is supposed that only the total acoustic field is available that makes the statement of the problem quite general and realistic. As the output, it is required to attenuate noise while preserving the desired field unaffected. To tackle the problem, a recently developed algorithm based on the nonlocal control is applied. From the point of view of a practical realization, the number of microphones and loudspeakers should be minimized. We propose for the first time some ways to essentially optimize distribution patterns of controls and sensors for the nonlocal control with preservation of desired sound. Numerical experiments are carried out for noise attenuation in a cube to study the trade-off between the level of noise reduction and number of sensors and controls. It is demonstrated that the nonlocal control can be efficiently realized with a reasonable number of sensors and controls. As shown, with only two controls per wavelength the achieved level of noise attenuation exceeds 10 dB. This result matches the optimal local control when any desired sound is absent. Among various topics explored in the transfer learning community, domain adaptation (DA) has been of primary interest and successfully applied in diverse fields. However, theoretical understanding of learning convergence in DA has not been sufficiently explored. To address such an issue, this paper presents the Stochastic Augmented Lagrangian method (SALM) to solve the optimization problem associated with domain adaptation. In contrast to previous works, the SALM is able to find the optimal Lagrangian multipliers, as opposed to manually selecting the multipliers which could result in significantly suboptimal solutions. Additionally, the SALM is the first algorithm which can find a feasible point with arbitrary precision for domain adaptation problems with bounded penalty parameters. We also observe that with unbounded penalty parameters, the proposed algorithm is able to find an approximate stationary point of infeasibility. One of the biggest challenge in the field of deep learning is the parameter selection and optimization process. In recent years different algorithms have been proposed including bio-inspired solutions to solve this problem, however, there are many challenges including local minima, saddle points, and vanishing gradients. In this paper, we introduce the Whale Optimisation Algorithm (WOA) based on the swarm foraging behavior of humpback whales to optimise neural network hyperparameters. We wish to stress that to the best of our knowledge this is the first attempt that uses Whale Optimisation Algorithm for the optimisation task of hyperparameters. After a detailed description of the WOA algorithm we formulate and explain the application in deep learning, present the implementation, and compare the proposed algorithm with other well-known algorithms including widely used Grid and Random Search methods. Additionally, we have implemented a third dimension feature analysis to the original WOA algorithm to utilize 3D search space (3D-WOA). Simulations show that the proposed algorithm can be successfully used for hyperparameters optimization, achieving accuracy of 89.85% and 80.60% for Fashion MNIST and Reuters datasets, respectively. Swarm intelligence is a discipline which makes use of a number of agents for solving optimization problems by producing low cost, fast and robust solutions. The dragonfly algorithm (DA), a recently proposed swarm intelligence algorithm, is inspired by the dynamic and static swarming behaviors of dragonflies, and it has been found to have a higher performance in comparison to other swarm intelligence and evolutionary algorithms in numerous applications. There are only a few surveys about the dragonfly algorithm, and we have found that they are limited in certain aspects. Hence, in this paper, we present a more comprehensive survey about DA, its applications in various domains, and its performance as compared to other swarm intelligence algorithms. We also analyze the hybrids of DA, the methods they employ to enhance the original DA, their performance as compared to the original DA, and their limitations. Numerous optimization problems have been defined in different disciplines of science that must be optimized using effective techniques. Optimization algorithms are an effective and widely used method of solving optimization problems that are able to provide suitable solutions for optimization problems. In this paper, a new nature-based optimization algorithm called Snow Leopard Optimization Algorithm (SLOA) is designed that mimics the natural behaviors of snow leopards. SLOA is simulated in four phases including travel routes, hunting, reproduction, and mortality. The different phases of the proposed algorithm are described and then the mathematical modeling of the SLOA is presented in order to implement it on different optimization problems. A standard set of objective functions, including twenty-three functions, is used to evaluate the ability of the proposed algorithm to optimize and provide appropriate solutions for optimization problems. Also, the optimization results obtained from the proposed SLOA are compared with eight other well-known optimization algorithms. The optimization results show that the proposed SLOA has a high ability to solve various optimization problems. Also, the analysis and comparison of the optimization results obtained from the SLOA with the other eight algorithms shows that the SLOA is able to provide more appropriate quasi-optimal solutions and closer to the global optimal, and with better performance, it is much more competitive than similar algorithms. There are increasing challenges for optimally distributing fresh products while adequately considering the uncertain demand of customers and maintaining the freshness of products. Taking the nature of fresh products and the characteristics of urban logistics systems into consideration, this paper proposes an improved genetic algorithm for effectively solving this problem in a computationally efficient manner. Such an algorithm can adequately account for the uncertain demand of customers to select the optimal distribution route to ensure the freshness of the product while minimizing the total distribution cost. Iterative optimization procedures are utilized for determining the optimal route by reducing the complexity of the computation in the search for an optimal solution. An illustrative example is presented that shows the improved algorithm is more effective with respect to the distribution cost, the distribution efficiency, and the distribution system's reliability in optimally distributing fresh products. Differential evolution is an effective and practical approach that is widely applied for solving global optimization problems. Nevertheless, its effectiveness and scalability are decreased when the problems' dimension is increased. Hence, this paper is devoted to proposing a novel DE algorithm named quantum-based avian navigation optimizer algorithm (QANA) inspired by the extraordinary precision navigation of migratory birds during long-distance aerial paths. In the QANA, the population is distributed by partitioning into multi flocks to explore the search space effectively using proposed self-adaptive quantum orientation and quantum-based navigation consisted of two mutation strategies, DE/quantum/I and DE/quantum/II. Except for the first iteration, each flock is assigned using an introduced success-based population distribution (SPD) policy to one of the quantum mutation strategies. Meanwhile, the information flow is shared through the population using a new communication topology named V-echelon. Furthermore, we introduce two long-term and short-term memories to provide meaningful knowledge for partial landscape analysis and a qubit-crossover operator to generate the next search agents. The effectiveness and scalability of the proposed QANA were extensively evaluated using benchmark functions CEC 2018 and CEC 2013 as LSGO problems. The results were statistically analyzed by the Wilcoxon signed-rank sum test, ANOVA, and mean absolute error tests. Finally, the applicability of the QANA to solve real-world problems was evaluated by four engineering problems. The experimental results and statistical analysis prove that the QANA is superior to the competitor DE and swarm intelligence algorithms in test functions CEC 2018 and CEC 2013, with overall effectiveness of 80.46% and 73.33%, respectively. • Proposing an optimizer algorithm (QANA) inspired by migratory birds' navigation behaviors. • Introducing LTM and STM memories to share information and partial landscape analysis. • Introducing a V-echelon topology to spread information flow throughout search agents. • Introducing a quantum mutation strategy equipped by two meaningful search strategies. • The proposed QANA optimizer is very competitive and superior to compared algorithms.
