Background: Existing studies confirm that some video games can change players' attitudes. However, since we do not know the specific elements responsible for attitude change, the potential of video games to achieve desired educational or behavioural outcomes often remains unfulfilled. Objectives: To fill the research gap, our study examined whether the perspective‐taking game mechanic in the serious game Czechoslovakia 38–89: Borderlands, which had previously been shown to affect attitudes, would have the same effect on another sample of players with different characteristics. Methods: We have assessed the effect of a historical video game using a perspective‐taking mechanic on players' explicit and implicit attitudes. Explicit attitude changes were measured at a general level, meaning a broad evaluation of a depicted historical event, and at a specific level, meaning a more detailed evaluation of specific aspects of the event. Simultaneously, we measured the effect of players' perceived attitude importance on attitude change. The study used a sample of 137 young adults. Results and Conclusions: This study's results indicate a significant pretest‐posttest explicit attitude change on the general level and on a specific level in comparison to the control group. Perspective‐taking game mechanics is particularly important for explicit attitude change. No change was found in implicit attitudes. The effect of the perceived attitude importance on attitude change was not confirmed. Takeaways: As one of the first to focus on the effects of specific game mechanics on attitudes, this study confirmed that perspective‐taking has stable, short‐term effects on attitude change even across different research samples. The mean absolute deviation (MAD) is a direct measure of the dispersion of a random variable about its mean. In this paper, the empirical likelihood (EL) and the adjusted EL methods for the MAD are proposed. The Bayesian empirical likelihood, the Bayesian adjusted empirical likelihood, the Bayesian jackknife empirical likelihood and the Bayesian adjusted jackknife empirical likelihood methods are used to construct credible intervals for the MAD. Simulation results show that the proposed EL method performs better than the JEL in Zhao et al. [Jackknife empirical likelihood inference for the mean absolute deviation. A series of recent experimental studies have cast doubt on the existence of a traditional tension that aestheticians have noted in our aesthetic judgements and practices, namely the problem of taste. The existence of the problem has been acknowledged since Hume and Kant, though not enough has been done to analyse it in depth. In this paper, we remedy this by proposing six possible conceptualizations of it. Drawing on our analysis of the problem of taste, we argue that the experimental results in question are not a real challenge to its existence. The strength and stiffness of a composite rockmass (intact material, defects, joints, bedding, etc.) are primary inputs for the engineering analysis of rock slopes and underground excavations. The Geological Strength Index (GSI) has served rock engineering for three decades as a rockmass assessment system based on the blockiness of the rockmass and discontinuity condition. GSI is used to factor the Hoek–Brown strength envelope for intact rock to represent jointed rockmasses in conventional equivalent-continuum numerical modelling. Modern numerical tools can represent networks of discrete (explicit) structure with assigned discontinuity properties. This provides an opportunity to compare explicit structural modelling with the conventional implicit equivalent-continuum approach. In this paper, explicit structural models are developed using elasto-plastic (constant-strength) constitutive models for intact rock and realistic parametric ranges for explicit structure properties. Explicit model results are compared to equivalent-continuum results, validating the classical implicit approach while also identifying key limitations. Explicit models with post-yield weakening of the intact and structural elements are then developed and compared to post-yield weakening implicit models that use post-yield dilation and empirical relationships between peak and residual GSI. The results provide guidance for practical modelling in strain-weakening rockmasses, including recommendations for post-yield dilation in the traditional implicit approach. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

To identify and describe the aims, methodological approaches, and major findings of studies on the use of STT among secondary pupils (age 12–18) with learning difficulties published from January 2000 to April 2022. This scoping review includes empirical studies published in peer-reviewed journals and grey literature between January 2000 and April 2022. Searches were conducted in April 2022 in three databases: ERIC, PsycINFO and Scopus. In addition, related reviews were manually screened for relevant papers. Eight peer-revied studies and five publications of grey literature were found to meet the inclusion criteria; two studies employed experimental designs, four employed quasi-experimental designs and seven employed explorative designs. Six studies described STT as an assistive technology (a compensatory aid for poor writing performance); two assessed STT as an instructional technology to determine whether it improves overall writing and related skills (e.g., reading). Results suggest that STT may increase pupils' abilities to produce texts with fewer errors, provide help with spelling and improve reading comprehension and word recognition. To date, there is a paucity of high-quality research on the use of STT among adolescents with LD. The scoping review shows that very little research has been conducted on the use of STT for adolescents with learning difficulties in secondary education. Findings from the studies identified five areas of interest: writing related skills, text assessment, writing processes, accuracy of the technology, and participants' experiences. Findings indicate that writing performance among students with learning difficulties improves when using STT. Parents, teachers, and pupils report positive experiences with the technology, particularly for students with severe reading and writing difficulties. There is a great need for more robust research on the use of speech-to-text technology (STT) in educational settings, especially on its effect on writing skills Studies describe STT as either an assistive (a compensatory aid for poor writing performance) or instructional technology (aiming to improve learning in general). It is important that practitioners are aware of the different aims and possible consequences of introducing STT to learners with writing difficulties. This study examines the academic definition of virtual museums and the factors determining whether South Korean art museums will offer virtual content. First, this paper collects definitions of virtual museums from previous studies and identifies the key attributes to then suggest a comprehensive definition. The final definition arrived upon is as follows: A museum built within a digital space with a collection of digitized objects, such as images, audio files, text-based documents, and using virtual reality to supplement, augment, and enrich the museum experience. Next, this study assesses the current digitalization level of South Korea's registered art museums and examines which museum attributes determine whether there is virtual content offered by the art museum. The research findings show that the number of museums with virtual content are quite limited. Additionally, the presence of collection information, the size of the collection, and the exhibition space's size all affect the presence of virtual content significantly. All-optical plasmonic switches (AOPSs) utilizing surface plasmon polaritons are well-suited for integration into photonic integrated circuits (PICs) and play a crucial role in advancing all-optical signal processing. The current AOPS design methods still rely on trial-and-error or empirical approaches. In contrast, recent deep learning (DL) advances have proven highly effective as computational tools, offering an alternative means to accelerate nanophotonics simulations. This paper proposes an innovative approach utilizing DL for spectrum prediction and inverse design of AOPS. The switches employ circular nonlinear plasmonic ring resonators (NPRRs) composed of interconnected metal–insulator–metal waveguides with a ring resonator. The NPRR switching performance is shown using the nonlinear Kerr effect. The forward model presented in this study demonstrates superior computational efficiency when compared to the finite-difference time-domain method. The model analyzes various structural parameters to predict transmission spectra with a distinctive dip. Inverse modeling enables the prediction of design parameters for desired transmission spectra. This model provides a rapid estimation of design parameters, offering a clear advantage over time-intensive conventional optimization approaches. The loss of prediction for both the forward and inverse models, when compared to simulations, is exceedingly low and on the order of 10−4. The effects of solar flares in the D-region ionosphere at two high-latitude stations: Maitri (70.75°S, 11.75°E) and Abisko (68.4°N, 18.9°E), located in different hemispheres are studied. We analyzed 37 M-class flares and 6 X-class flares of the year 2014, which occurred when either or both stations were in the sun- lit side of the Earth. Cosmic Noise Absorption (CNA) curves are obtained using the datasets of riometers located at the two stations and are analyzed for all the 43 events under study. This paper discusses: 1) relationship between CNA and flare magnitude, 2) relationship between CNA and solar zenith angle (SZA), 3) hemispheric asymmetry in the observed solar flare associate CNA (or SCNA), and 4) the effect of background ionospheric condition in the SCNA magnitude at the two high latitude stations. It is observed that the solar flare effect in SCNA strongly depends on the SZA and flare intensity. Our analysis reveals that the flare response in SCNA for the year 2014 was stronger at Abisko than at Maitri. There is an observed hemispheric asymmetry in the solar flare ionization at D-region ionosphere for the given latitude. This asymmetry can be attributed to the previously enhanced background ionospheric ionization during particle precipitation processes. This study shows the need to establish an empirical relationship between the observed CNA v[sub s]. flare intensity, SZA and latitudinal position; especially when we go higher in latitudes. Based on the decoupling theory, this paper analyzes the relationship between the embodied carbon productivity and the embodied value added in China's industrial sectors, evaluates the development mode of the sectors, and explores a reasonable path to promote the green and low-carbon transformation of the sectors based on the panel multinomial logit model. The empirical conclusions are as follows: (i) Except for the decrease in 2002–2005, the embodied carbon productivity achieved rapid growth in other time periods; during the period of 2002–2020, the embodied value added increased by 339.59 percentage points, with an average annual growth rate of 8.57%, and the embodied carbon productivity increased by 70.59 percentage points, with an average annual growth rate of 3.01%. (ii) As the embodied value added of the 28 industrial subsectors expanded, the changes in their embodied carbon productivity were different. This process can be roughly classified into three main phases: The first phase is the extensive growth period of 2002–2005, in which the embodied carbon productivity of most industrial subsectors declined while the embodied value added expanded; the second phase is the low-carbon transformation and development period of 2005–2012, during which the recessive positive-efficiency emission reduction became the dominant mode; and the third phase is the low-carbon development period of 2012–2020, in which the high-efficiency emission reduction became the dominant mode. (iii) When the industrial sectors are in an expansive state, increasing the substitution of capital for energy factors will make the transformation of industrial sectors more inclined to expansive high-efficiency emission reduction mode, and when the industrial sectors fall into recession, optimizing the energy structure will produce the same effect. A systematic correlation is established between the axial load-carrying capacity of the socketed piles and empirical methods. The axial load-carrying capabilities were calculated with the help of pile load tests for ten single piles in Navi Mumbai, India. Pile load tests were carried out to evaluate the skin friction and base resistance in overlying soil and rock. The test results of axially loaded bored piles socketed into the rock are mentioned in this paper. The pile socket involved rocks of various strengths such as gypsum, limestone, and basalt. In reality, axial capacity is calculated from skin friction of the pile, which occurs owing to a very small settlement in the rock socket. The unconfined compressive strength of the rock is collected from the laboratory test. The load-bearing capability of the socketed piles is determined using several empirical methods, which are usually evaluated by a back-assessment of the in-situ pile load test. However, the significant load-carrying capacity values derived from empirical correlations are found to be reasonably good compared with those estimated from pile load tests. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Early childhood education and care (ECEC) is a crucial intervention because of its long‐term impact on child development. However, information concerning the effectiveness of the ECEC in developing countries like India is sparsely available. This empirical study drew upon primary data collected from India's eastern state, West Bengal and investigated whether attending preschool contributed to children's cognitive and social skill development. The study found that attending preschool did not provide dividends in the form of cognitive and social skill accumulation. Furthermore, attending private preschool was associated with socioemotional development but no cognitive development. Moreover, parents' education seems to be a strong predictor for child's development. Given the findings of this paper, preschools in India, both in the public and private sectors, would need considerable quality improvement to deliver developmentally appropriate ECEC to children. It is particularly relevant in the context of the new National Education Policy in India, which emphasises the need to provide universal access to high‐quality ECCE to all young children across the country. Compensated dating is a contestable phenomenon. While most academic and public discourses have paid considerable attentions to young girls who provide compensated dating, little is known about men who buy it. Drawing from 33 in-depth interviews with male clients of compensated dating in Hong Kong, this empirical study provides a qualitative analysis of their experiences. The findings show that compensated dating is not only a platform where men can fulfill their desires and fantasies of youthfulness, passionate sex, and emotional intimacy, but also a place where they can forge meaningful relationships. Compensated dating relationships are dynamic, fluid, and negotiable, which could transform from bounded commercial/counterfeit ones to unbounded/authentic ones. Modularized floating solar farms exhibit the potential to replace conventional steel-frame ones, effectively remedying hydroelastic issues of a very large floating structure through discrete modules with mechanical connections. However, the response of the discrete modules under cyclic wave loading has not been fully understood. This paper assesses the motion characteristics and expansibility of modularized floaters in waves, based on computational results from fluid–structural interaction simulations. A crucial factor, denoted as the ratio of frame length to wavelength R = L s / λ , is determined to predict the motions of a large floating solar system in head waves. Results indicate that the motion characteristics is predictable based on the R value. The empirical relationship between the R value and the motion of every unit in an array is analyzed. In particular, the results calculated from using the multiple-rigid-bodies method are also compared with those from using the single-large-hydroelastic-body method, and it was found that these two results are similar when R > 1. This similarity allows for predicting the multi-hinged bodies' behavior in waves through a simplified hydroelastic approach. Overall, this study reports insights that are useful for the design and optimization of modularized solar farms and can help address cyclic loading and motion concerns for long-term durability. IRTree models have been receiving increasing attention. However, to date, there are limited sources that provide a systematic introduction to Bayesian modeling techniques using modern probabilistic programming frameworks for the implementation of IRTree models. To facilitate the research and application of IRTree models, this paper introduces how to perform two families of Bayesian IRTree models (i.e., response tree models and latent tree models) in Stan and how to extend them in an explanatory way. Some suggestions on executing Stan codes and checking convergence are also provided. An empirical study based on the Oxford Achieving Resilience during COVID-19 data was conducted as an example to further illustrate how to apply Bayesian IRTree models to address research questions. Online ride-splitting has rapidly evolved worldwide, providing new means to enhance the efficiency of urban travel and reduce the number of vehicles and traffic congestion. While ride-splitting is currently believed to improve vehicle occupancy rates and decrease total travel distances, passengers may perceive it as resulting in additional travel due to ride sharing. To gain a more intuitive understanding of the current operations of ride-splitting, this study delves into carpooling behavior and analyzes its relative impact using GPS trajectory data from DiDi Chuxing in Chengdu, China. The investigation focuses on the behavior of ride-splitting and examines its relative impact based on disparities in total vehicle miles traveled (VMT) and travel duration between ride-splitting traveling (RST) and corresponding separated traveling (ST), aiming to estimate the effect of RST on urban mobility. Following are the three main findings of this study: (a) The existing operation of RST induces 7%–10% extra VMT and 20%–35% extra duration for RST users; (b) The RST achieves 30%–35% VMT and 10%–20% duration saving for drivers who are willing to provide RST service; (c) The RST saves up to 10% VMT and duration varying by time in a day. During the last five decades, the scientific study of classroom talk has converged in the tradition of classroom dialogue. Empirical research has progressed, showing how dialogic forms of organizing classroom talk would be more conducive to student learning and development than monologic forms. However, two major problems remain unresolved. On the one hand, and despite the research mentioned above, teachers still mostly use a monological teaching method, thus arranging monological ways of organizing classroom discourse. On the other hand, our understanding of the psychological processes that would explain the relationship between the way of organizing classroom talk and learning is still limited. In the present article, we introduce a special section in which we have brought together six papers that sought to extend conceptually and methodologically the limits of the study of classroom talk by explicitly adopting the notion of discursive interactions in the classroom. We propose a novel approach to retirement risk and its measurement. We define retirement risk as a shortfall of financial resources to meet the needs of a retiree's household, which is different from the inability to maintain a standard of living in retirement. Taking a subjective approach to risk, we operationalise it using the Leyden approach to estimate the minimum satisfactory income for a retiree household and compare it to the pension value. Using a logistic regression model, we estimate the effect of pension value and household and reference person characteristics. The retirement risk level strongly depends on the pension value, household composition, and the reference person's education attainment level, which also moderates the impact of the pension. This paper contributes to the literature by proposing a subjective retirement risk measurement method and offering a methodological tool that can be used with similar data from other countries. Although initially plausible, the view that moral education should aim at the transmission of moral knowledge has been subject to severe criticism. In this context, one particularly prominent line of argumentation rests on the empirical observation that moral questions are subject to widespread and robust disagreement. In this paper, I would like to discuss the implications of moral disagreement for the goals of moral education in more detail. I will start by laying out the empirical and philosophical assumptions behind the idea that widespread and robust moral disagreement undermines the prospects of transmitting moral knowledge in educational settings. Having thus provided a specific interpretation of the epistemic dynamics behind this so-called 'challenge of disagreement', I will proceed by discussing its didactical implications. More specifically, I will defend two claims: first, I will argue that the challenge of disagreement is not an effective challenge, because it undermines the possibility of knowledge transfer only with respect to a limited set of moral propositions. Second, I will argue that the challenge of disagreement is not a specific challenge, because the epistemically destructive effects of moral disagreement also pose a challenge for other prominent accounts of moral education that were originally proposed as promising alternatives to knowledge transmission accounts. If convincing, my arguments show that knowledge transmission accounts of moral education are in a much better position than is usually expected to incorporate the fact that moral questions are notoriously controversial. The development of reasoning skills is often regarded as a central goal of ethics and philosophy classes in school education. In light of recent studies from the field of moral psychology, however, it could be objected that the promotion of such skills might fail to meet another important objective, namely the moral education of students. In this paper, I will argue against such pessimism by suggesting that the fostering of reasoning skills can still contribute to the aims of moral education. To do so, I will engage with the concept of moral education, point out different ways in which reasoning skills play an essential role in it, and support these considerations by appealing to further empirical studies. My conclusion will be that the promotion of ethical reasoning skills fulfils two important aims of moral education: First, it enables students to critically reflect on their ethical beliefs. Second, it allows them to explore ethical questions in a joint conversation with others. This article presents a commentary on Sen and Gredebäck’s “Methodological integrity assessment in the mobile paradigm literature: A lesson for understanding opportunistic use of researcher degrees of freedom in psychology” presented in this issue. The authors discuss the operant mobile paradigm in infant memory research as well as degrees of freedom and an evaluation of the paper’s simulation analyses.

Dance has entered mainstream empirical research: dance as an experimental stimulus, and dancers as movement experts. Informed by several sources, including primary sources (original, historical documents, and oral reports, such as interviews with practitioners and academic scholars of Iranian dance genres) and secondary sources (research literature), we describe what we label "Iranian classical dance" within this paper as an important resource for empirical research, not only in humanities scholarship but also, and importantly, for empirical aesthetics, emotion psychology, cross‐cultural psychology, and affective neuroscience. For this purpose, we (1) describe the aesthetics, characteristics, and history of Iranian classical dance; (2) outline issues of definition and systematization; and (3) give an overview of the cultural complexities and sociopolitical issues regarding Iranian classical dance in the past 40 years, which have shaped its current form. After the political revolution of 1979 (Iranian solar calendar year: 1358), dance in Iran—both as everyday practice and as a cultural heritage—was first forbidden, and now remains heavily restricted. International, interdisciplinary research teams can contribute to safeguarding Iranian classical dance in the future by firmly enshrining it into empirical research on human dance. Distortions and resource misallocation cause large productivity losses, especially in developing countries. But removing (all) distortions is infeasible in practice. Policymakers face second-best policy options at best. However, empirical studies typically do not show the productivity gain from a partial removal of distortions. In this paper we analyze the productivity gain from (only) removing ownership distortions within the Hsieh and Klenow (2009) framework using the Vietnam Enterprise Census over the period 2000–2015. We show analytically how the productivity gains from a removal of ownership distortions depends on their covariances with other distortions. Empirically, state-owned enterprises and foreign firms experience significantly lower capital distortions than private firms in most manufacturing industries. However, the removal of ownership distortions has little impact because of complementary size-dependent distortions in Vietnam. In Ireland as elsewhere, the value of putting evidence and scientific advice at the centre of public policy-making, has rarely been more evident. The prominence of the science-policy interface has renewed interest in the prospects for evidence based policy (EBP) in education. Notwithstanding the political rhetoric around EBP in education, little is known about the nature and extent of research use in Irish education policy. This paper reports results from a survey of educational researchers in Ireland (n = 69) which involved them completing a survey based on a reliable measure of research utilisation. Results show a poor record in the reported uptake of educational research by policy-makers. Twenty-two independent variables were identified and tested for their association with reported levels of research use. Results indicate that eleven variables have a statistically significant correlation with research utilisation. Regression analysis indicates that four variables can significantly predict variance in the dependent variable (research utilisation) they are, researcher-policymaker collaboration; institutional affiliation of researcher; policy orientation of researcher; and researcher reputation (Adjusted R2 =.545, p <.001). Psychological theory suggests that evaluators' individual values and traits play a fundamental role in evaluation practice, though few empirical studies have explored those constructs in evaluators. This paper describes an empirical study on evaluators' individual, work, and political values, as well as their personality traits to predict evaluation practice and methodological orientation. The results suggest evaluators value benevolence, achievement, and universalism; they lean socially liberal but are slightly more conservative on fiscal issues; and they tend to be conscientious, agreeable, and open to new experiences. In the workplace, evaluators value competence and opportunities for growth, as well as status and independence. These constructs did not statistically predict evaluation practice, though some workplace values and individual values predicted quantitative methodological orientation. It is recognized that most real systems and networks exhibit a much higher clustering with comparison to a random null model, which can be explained by a higher probability of the triad formation—a pair of nodes with a mutual neighbor have a greater possibility of having a link between them. To catch the more substantial clustering of real-world networks, the model based on the triadic closure mechanism was introduced by P. Holme and B. J. Kim in 2002. It includes a "triad formation step" in which a newly added node links both to a preferentially chosen node and to its randomly chosen neighbor, therefore forming a triad. In this study, we propose a new model of network evolution in which the triad formation mechanism is essentially changed in comparison to the model of P. Holme and B. J. Kim. In our proposed model, the second node is also chosen preferentially, i.e., the probability of its selection is proportional to its degree with respect to the sum of the degrees of the neighbors of the first selected node. The main goal of this paper is to study the properties of networks generated by this model. Using both analytical and empirical methods, we show that the networks are scale-free with power-law degree distributions, but their exponent γ is tunable which is distinguishable from the networks generated by the model of P. This paper investigated the local content programming and cultural imperialism in the Nigerian broadcast media with a view to determining the extent to which cultural imperialism influences radio and television stations in Nigeria local content programming and the impact of their programmes on the indigenous culture. The theories of cultural imperialism and cultivation Analysis were employed to underpin or support the study. A survey method was used to gather data for the study. Based on the empirical data obtained, it was revealed that broadcast stations in Nigeria are involved in local content programming but the extent is not significant as foreign programmes still take the lead in our broadcast stations. Even most of the programmes that are regarded as indigenous in our broadcast stations, are in most case, dominated by the content of foreign materials. This to a large extent has contributed to cultural imperialism as our indigenous programmes are in most cases relegated to the background even by the indigenous viewers. Findings also revealed that the reasons for this horrible and hideous situation is lack of finance for local programming, lack of digitalized equipment which constitutes poor quality programming and lack of austere monitoring by the NBC. The study concludes that broadcast media in Nigeria is still infantile as well as juvenile in terms of local content programming, thereby opening wider fissure for foreign programmes to fill in. The study recommends that the broadcast media in Nigeria should come back to the drawing board and pay keen attention to local programming as this is the only way our core values as a people and nation can be promoted. Background Dual sensory impairment (DSI), the combination of visual and hearing impairments, is associated with increased risk for age-related cognitive decline and dementia. Administering cognitive tests to individuals with sensory impairment is challenging because most cognitive measures require sufficient hearing and vision. Considering sensory limitations during cognitive test administration is necessary so that the effects of sensory and cognitive abilities on test performance can be differentiated and the validity of test results optimized. Objective To review empirical strategies that researchers have employed to accommodate DSI during cognitive testing of older adults. Methods Seven databases (MEDLINE, Embase, Web of Science, CINAHL, PsycINFO, Global Health and the Evidence-Based Medicine Reviews databases) were searched for relevant articles integrating the three concepts of cognitive evaluation, aging, and DSI. Given the inclusion criteria, this scoping review included a total of 67 papers. Results Twenty-eight studies reported five categories of strategies for cognitive testing of older adult participants with DSI: the assistance of experts, the modification of standardized test scoring procedures, the use of communication strategies, environmental modifications, and the use of cognitive tests without visual and/or auditory items. Conclusions The most used strategy reported in the included studies was drawing on the assistance of team members from related fields during the administration and interpretation of cognitive screening measures. Alternative strategies were rarely employed. Future research is needed to explore the knowledge-to-practice gap between research and current clinical practice, and to develop standardized testing strategies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Methodological nationalism as a critique of container-based and nation-state-focused theory and empirical research is currently strongly anchored within migration studies, where it was initially developed. While this has led to extensive literature and critical engagement with methodological nationalism, and ways to circumvent the national trap in many (sub-)disciplines, it has not much penetrated theories of social stratification. This conceptual paper will address this gap by discussing the social positioning of high-skilled migrants in contemporary stratified societies. This exemplary discussion will bring together a critical perspective of methodological nationalism on class and milieu theory. It will also confront the critique of methodological nationalism with the question of the origin of social power and dominance, which are the foundation of stratification theories. This article will specifically draw on Pierre Bourdieu's concept of social space and its derivative. Emphasis will also be given to Michael Vester's development of social milieu to highlight blind spots according to the critique of methodological nationalism. This paper shows that these theories have not grasped high-skilled migration thoroughly. It also outlines that migrant theories and their critique of methodological nationalism inadequately address the source of symbolic hierarchy and the formation of social stratification. Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to investigate factors affecting Vietnamese people's sustainable tourism intention (IN) with extended the theory of planned behavior (TPB). Design/methodology/approach: Preliminary quantitative research was carried out before large-scale formal quantitative research with a sample size of 628 Vietnamese people. Using the partial least squares structural equation modeling method with the SmartPLS tool, measurement and structural models 3.0 were evaluated before testing the research hypotheses about the influence of factors on the IN of sustainable tourism. Findings: This study uses the extended TPB model with original constructs and two additional constructs, travel motivation (TM) and moral reflectiveness (MR), to find out the factors affecting the sustainable tourism IN of Vietnamese people. All hypotheses are accepted, except for the hypothesis about the relationship between TM and attitude toward sustainable tourism. MR has been shown to have a more positive and stronger (insignificant) effect than other factors of the proposed research model on sustainable tourism IN. Thereby, this study contributes both theoretically and practically to policymakers, researchers and tourism enterprises in promoting sustainable tourism IN. Research limitations/implications: The main limitation of this paper is the deliberate sampling method and targeting the demographic proportion corresponding to the population has lost the randomness of the survey sample. Practical implications: The findings indicate that state management agencies and tourism enterprises in Vietnam need to pay attention to communication to raise awareness of environmentally oriented tourism and promote the ability to participate in sustainable tourism at a reasonable price as well as the opportunity for easy access and, at the same time, take measures to influence TM and have communication strategies that address the ethical value of participating in sustainable tourism. Originality/value: To the best of the authors' knowledge, this paper is the first empirical study to contribute to the existing literature on tourism by integrating TPB constructs with TM and MR to predict sustainable tourism IN. This paper presents a reconsideration and more in-depth discussion part of some the findings of the Home Office funded Sibling Sexual Abuse (SSA) project (King-Hill et al, 2023). The focus of the paper on the role of family systems, especially dysfunctional family systems, in the sexual abuse. The research is based on 17 semi-structured interviews with survivors of SSA (n=17 female), which were thematically analysed. This resulted in the research team being able to identify 10 commonly identified markers of SSA and family dysfunction. The 10 markers highlight that the family structure, systems, processes, and functionality all contribute to the conditions that enable Sibling Sexual Abuse to occur. The paper goes on to discuss the importance of understanding family systems, ACE's, and trauma in preventing and responding to Sibling Sexual Abuse. The paper concludes that the family system is a key player in Sibling Sexual Abuse and needs to be considered in prevention and treatment as the child who id harmed and the child that harms. The impact of this paper is both clinical and professional. It provides insights into the role of family systems in sibling sexual abuse cases and by result feeds into discussions around the effective prevention of and response to this form of sexual abuse. This paper combines reader-response analysis and stylistic insights to investigate what may be triggering perceptions of racism in Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness. It presents the results of a survey that asked participants to read extracts from the novel in which Africans are described and to highlight words and phrases they found problematic. Participants were then asked to answer some questions about their perception. Linking quantitative examination of the patterns emerging from participants' highlighting with a qualitative analysis of participants' answers, this paper provides a comprehensive picture of the linguistic features and structures that contribute to the perception of racism in Heart of Darkness. By doing so, this paper not only offers a novel perspective on the discussion about race and racism in Conrad's canonical text, but it also provides further empirical evidence of the relationship between language and reader response. Aims: The aim was to examine the extent and scope of empirical research concerning registered nurses' psychological capital. Background: In a time of global nursing shortage, identifying variables that could positively contribute to the retention of the nursing workforce is essential. Prior research has shown that psychological capital correlates positively with employees' better performance and well‐being. Design: A scoping review. Data sources A systematic literature search was conducted in the following databases: PubMed, CINAHL, PsycINFO, Web of Science and Scopus covering the period from 1 January 2005 to 7 May 2023. Review methods: The JBI methodological guidance for scoping reviews was followed. The results were summarized narratively. Results: A total of 111 studies reported in 114 peer‐reviewed articles were included. Studies were carried out across 20 countries, with the majority from China (45), Australia (nine), Pakistan (nine), Canada (eight), South Korea (eight) and the United States (eight). A positive correlation was found between registered nurses' psychological capital and desirable work‐related outcomes, such as work engagement, commitment and retention intention. Conclusion: A comprehensive overview of research evidence suggests that psychological capital is associated with many positive work‐related outcomes and might therefore be a valuable resource for reducing nurse turnover. Summary statement: What is already known about this topic? The concept of psychological capital has been originally developed in the field of positive psychology.Psychological capital has been positively associated with many employees' desired work‐related outcomes, for example better performance, positive attitudes and well‐being.Nursing workforce researchers are increasingly interested in psychological capital as an emerging concept. The purpose of this paper is to show what are the applicants' institution selection criteria in higher education in Hungary and what changes this will imply in higher education management and communication. These questions were investigated based on a review of the most relevant literature and the analysis of 1396 Hungarian higher education University of Pécs applicants in two consecutive years. Exploratory and confirmative factor analyses were used to identify the relative order of the application influencing factors: as a result, the first most important is the vivacity, followed by career and costs, fourth is image and the last one is the low commitment. In this context, the paper has shown that the identification of the application strategies requires renewed management and communication techniques. The results help the institutions to determine the possible actions to be implemented to attract more students and improve the level of offered services. The permanent system change of the Hungarian higher education as a phenomenon versus the applicants' institution selection criteria gives the uniqueness of the Hungarian situation, and this study provides information for researchers in higher education in this field additionally. This paper reconceptualised the interrelated learning constructs in higher education based on the Dynamic Systems Theory (DST). The university students' learning experience before, during and post the Emergency Online Learning (EOL) was investigated to explore the dynamic changes among the learning constructs in higher education. A case study of a Chinese university was conducted, and one hundred and ninety‐three university students participated in the questionnaire. The data collected from this empirical research identify different hierarchical constructs of the conceptualised learning environment and reconceptualise the period of system reformation influenced by the EOL. The key findings include the identifications of the attractors and repellors framed by the DST and the impact on the changes in the learning constructs. In this paper, based on an invited keynote given at the 2022 Colloquium of the Society for Educational Studies, I explore the question of the integrity of educational studies. I ask is whether educational studies in their current configuration are able to offer resistance to the instrumentalisation of education and the push towards empirical research that is only interested in finding out what works, but is unable to engage with this question in a properly educational way. Through a reconstruction of the history of educational studies in the English-speaking world, I show how educational studies are predominantly configured as an 'applied field'. The problem with this configuration is that educational studies lack the resources for generating educational questions about and an educational perspective on education. I show why this is a problem, also in relation to ongoing misunderstandings and misrepresentations of education. In the final part of the paper I outline two approaches, one focusing on educational concepts and one highlighting the unique and distinctive form of education, that may help to build a stronger identity for educational studies. This paper examines the current crisis in education research and how we might confront it. It begins by arguing that the 'coming crisis' facing empirical sociology identified by Savage and Burrows (2007) applies equally – if not more so – to empirical education research. Education researchers can no longer lay claim to specialist expertise in the analysis of social institutions and our 'tools of the trade' are increasingly unviable. These developments are compounded by the dominance of the 'cultural turn' within British education research which has made it difficult for education researchers to develop a cumulative evidence base, leading to a lack of traction with policymakers and a privileging of cultural inequalities in education over economic inequalities. The paper discusses how the education research community might respond to the challenges and considers whether we might do worse than follow the suggestion offered to sociologists that they should take 'a descriptive turn'. Taking such a turn will not be easy, but the alternative may be that education research in the UK will be even more marginalised as it becomes increasingly out-of-step with the developments in data, evidence and analysis being fostered outside the academy. Background: The implementation science literature acknowledges a need for engagement of key stakeholders when designing, delivering and evaluating implementation work. To date, the literature reports minimal or focused stakeholder engagement, where stakeholders are engaged in either barrier identification and/or barrier prioritisation. This paper begins to answer calls from the literature for the development of tools and guidance to support comprehensive stakeholder engagement in implementation research and practice. The paper describes the systematic development of the Implementation‐STakeholder Engagement Model (I‐STEM) in the context of an international, large‐scale empirical implementation study (ImpleMentAll) aimed at evaluating the effectiveness of a tailored implementation toolkit. The I‐STEM is a sensitising tool that defines key considerations and activities for undertaking stakeholder engagement activities across an implementation process. Methods: In‐depth, semistructured interviews and observations were conducted with implementers who were tailoring implementation strategies to integrate and embed internet‐based cognitive behavioural therapy (iCBT) services in 12 routine mental health care organisations in nine countries in Europe and Australia. The analytical process was informed by principles of first‐ and third‐generation Grounded Theory, including constant comparative method. Results: We conducted 55 interviews and observed 19 implementation‐related activities (e.g., team meetings and technical support calls). The final outcome of our analysis is expressed in an initial version of the I‐STEM, consisting of five interrelated concepts: engagement objectives, stakeholder mapping, engagement approaches, engagement qualities and engagement outcomes. Engagement objectives are goals that implementers plan to achieve by working with stakeholders in the implementation process. Stakeholder mapping involves identifying a range of organisations, groups or people who may be instrumental in achieving the engagement objectives. Engagement approaches define the type of work that is undertaken with stakeholders to achieve the engagement objectives. Engagement qualities define the logistics of the engagement approach. Lastly, every engagement activity may result in a range of engagement outcomes. Conclusion: The I‐STEM represents potential avenues for substantial stakeholder engagement activity across key phases of an implementation process. It provides a conceptual model for the planning, delivery, evaluation and reporting of stakeholder engagement activities. The I‐STEM is nonprescriptive and highlights the importance of a flexible, iterative approach to stakeholder engagement. It is developmental and will require application and validation across a range of implementation activities. This paper draws on findings from a wider project examining 'relational pedagogies' within Australian secondary schools. The paper considers the growing use of the 'relationships' concept as a descriptor of specific teaching practices. Normative descriptions of 'relationships' (and concordant descriptions of relational pedagogies) can be at odds with the empirical realities inherent to classroom practice. This paper suggests that accounts of the relational should consider the 'context' and the 'immediacy' of the relationships made possible in classroom settings. Arguing that designations of relational pedagogy require (i) consideration of the 'empirical realities' that contextualise pedagogical encounters and (ii) reflexive appraisals of teacher and student positionality, this paper draws on descriptions of relational pedagogy offered by a group of teacher–participants to illustrate the various ways that the 'relationships' concept gains form. The analysis outlined in this paper demonstrates that teachers define and enact relational pedagogies in idiosyncratic ways within their classrooms, rendering normative apriori conceptualisations of the 'relationships' concept incomplete and prone to irrelevance. A plausible view about the epistemic condition of blameworthiness holds the following. Reasonable Expectation (RE): S's state of ignorance excuses iff S could not have been reasonably expected to have corrected or avoided the ignorance. An important, yet underexplored issue for RE concerns cases where an agent had the capacities and opportunities to have corrected or avoided the state of ignorance yet failed to do because of the difficulty involved. When does the fact that it was difficult for the agent to have corrected or avoided the ignorance make an expectation to have done so an unreasonable expectation? Addressing this question is important for understanding what RE implies for a broad range of interesting cases where non-ideal agents out in the real world are ignorant because of commonplace difficulties (e.g., cognitive biases, complexity of large bodies of evidence, and misinformation). Whether commonplace difficulties excuse is an interesting and important topic that a satisfactory account of the epistemic condition needs to address. This paper proposes and defends an irreducibly normative account of when difficulty precludes a reasonable expectation to know better. This paper provides a review of empirical studies published with a decolonial epistemic approach in psychology. Our goal was to better understand how decolonial approaches are being practiced empirically in psychology, with an emphasis on community‐social psychology. We first discuss the context of colonization and coloniality in the research process as orienting information. We identified 17 peer‐reviewed empirical articles with a decolonial approach to psychology scholarship and discerned four waves that characterize the articles: relationally‐based research to transgress fixed hierarchies and unsettle power, research from the heart, sociohistorical intersectional consciousness, and desire‐based future‐oriented research to rehumanize and seek utopia. Community‐social psychology research with a decolonial approach has the potential to remember grassroots efforts, decolonizing our world. Background: Compensation mechanisms and multiplier effects may affect productivity losses due to illness, disability, or premature death of individuals. Hence, they are important in estimating productivity losses and productivity costs in the context of economic evaluations of health interventions. This paper presents a systematic literature review of papers focusing on compensation mechanisms and multiplier effects, as well as whether and how they are included in health economic evaluations. Methods: The systematic literature search was performed covering EconLit and PubMed. A data-extraction form was developed focusing on compensation mechanisms and multiplier effects. Results: A total of 26 studies were included. Of these, 15 were empirical studies, three studies were methodological studies, two studies combined methodological research with empirical research, four were critical reviews, one study was a critical review combined with methodological research, and one study was a cost–benefit analysis. No uniform definition of compensation mechanisms and multiplier effects was identified. The terminology used to describe compensation mechanisms and multiplier effects varied as well. While the included studies suggest that both multipliers as well as compensation mechanisms substantially impact productivity cost estimates, the available evidence is scarce. Moreover, the generalizability as well as validity of assumptions underlying the calculations are unclear. Available measurement methods for compensation mechanisms and multiplier effects differ in approaches and are hardly validated. Conclusion: While our review suggests that compensation mechanisms and multiplier effects may have a significant impact on productivity losses and costs, much remains unclear about their features, valid measurement, and correct valuation. Building on their influential body of work and expanding upon further empirical research across Ireland, Canada and the UK, their paper is a direct examination of the views and experiences of those concerned about socio-legal challenges in sexuality and gender. With my responses and provocations, I gesture towards a relational geographical framing, focusing on three main themes: the everyday and relationality, experience and difference, and praxis and allyship. The purpose of this paper is to assess the effects that the COVID-19 pandemic caused in the human–computer interaction (HCI) research field. Specifically, we aim to investigate how the HCI empirical research methodology changed due to the restrictions caused by COVID-19. For this reason, we analyzed all the papers published in the 2021 edition of The ACM Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems (CHI 2021), which is generally considered the premier international conference for the field of HCI. Through the analysis of CHI papers, we identified four main effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on HCI research: influence on participants; influence on apparatus; influence on experiment procedure; other influences. These effects are described in detail and broken down into additional subcategories. Moreover, papers on pandemic-related topics were also identified. In addition, we performed some comparisons with the previous and successive edition of the conference, and extended some analysis, e.g categorization, to CHI 2022 papers. The analysis found that 23% of CHI 2021 papers and 36% of CHI 2022 papers reported some influences of the pandemic, the most common being a change in the procedures researchers used to interact with participants in their studies, in most cases based on remote communication technologies. Conflicts are considered as vital elements of plural democracies in agonistic political and planning theory. According to this theory, antagonisms are to be tamed and channeled into agonistic disputes. Therefore, forms of participation in planning procedures play a key role in the resolution and regulation of conflicts. The central question of this paper is the role of participatory procedures in planning in order to resolve and settle conflicts, which occur in a particularly sharp way in the context of large-scale projects. The paper presents planning conflicts and forms of participation using the case of the settlement of the Gigafactory Tesla in the German state of Brandenburg. Within the framework of an empirical case study, the approval procedure of the project and a land use plan procedure of the municipality are analysed. Both procedures are characterized by a great acceleration, early preliminary decisions and participation deficits. The result shows that in the case of the settlement of Tesla, in addition to conflicts of interest, values and location, procedural conflicts also occur, which call the acceptance of planning into question. The forms of participation practiced do not prove suitable for taming conflicts, but rather produce mistrust among opponents and reinforce antagonistic dynamics. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Implementation science scholars argue that knowing 'what works' in public health is insufficient to change practices, without understanding 'how', 'where' and 'why' something works. In the peer reviewed literature on conflict-affected settings, challenges to produce research, make decisions informed by evidence, or deliver services are documented, but what about the understanding of 'how', 'where' and 'why' changes occur? We explored these questions through a scoping review of peer-reviewed literature based on core dimensions of the Extended Normalization Process Theory. We selected papers that provided data on how something might work (who is involved and how?), where (in what organizational arrangements or contexts?) and why (what was done?). We searched the Global Health, Medline, Embase databases. We screened 2054 abstracts and 128 full texts. We included 22 papers (of which 15 related to mental health interventions) and analysed them thematically. We had the results revised critically by co-authors experienced in operational research in conflict-affected settings. Using an implementation science lens, we found that: (a) implementing actors are often engaged after research is produced to discuss feasibility; (b) new interventions or delivery modalities need to be flexible; (c) disruptions affect how research findings can lead to sustained practices; (d) strong leadership and stable resources are crucial for frontline actors; (e) creating a safe learning space to discuss challenges is difficult; (f) feasibility in such settings needs to be balanced. Lastly, communities and frontline actors need to be engaged as early as possible in the research process. We used our findings to adapt the Extended Normalization Process Theory for operational research in settings affected by conflicts. Internal control is the key to achieve high-quality development of enterprises, but internal control failure cases frequently occur at home and abroad. Therefore, it is particularly important to explore ways to improve the quality of internal control and promote high-quality development of enterprises. Taking non-financial listed enterprises in China from 2015 to 2020 as research samples, this paper adopts empirical research methods to research the impact and mechanism of employee welfare on the quality of internal control of enterprises from the perspective of all-employee governance, aiming to explore ways for enterprises to improve the quality of internal control.The results showed that employee welfare can improve the quality of internal controls significantly. Furthermore, the effect is more significant in non-employee-intensive industries and high-marketization areas. Based on the analysis of internal control elements, the research found that employee welfare affects the quality of internal control mainly through two elements, risk assessment and control activities. However, the effects of employee welfare on the three other elements are insignificant. This paper enriched the relevant research on the economic consequences of employee welfare and the factors affecting the quality of internal control, and has certain enlightenment significance for the popularization of employee welfare, especially supplementary pension, and also provides a reference path for the improvement of the quality of internal control. Various philosophers authors have argued—on the basis of powerful examples—that we can have compelling moral or practical reasons to believe, even when the evidence suggests otherwise. This paper explores an alternative story, which still aims to respect widely shared intuitions about the motivating examples. Specifically, the paper proposes that what is at stake in these cases is not belief, but rather acceptance—an attitude classically characterized as taking a proposition as a premise in practical deliberation and action. I suggest that acceptance's theoretical usefulness in the ethics of belief has been hidden by its psychological obscurity. I thus aim to develop an empirically adequate and mechanistically specific psychological profile of acceptance. I characterize acceptance as centrally involving a cognitive gating function, in which we prevent a target belief state from having its characteristic downstream effects on reasoning, cognition, and action, and restructure those downstream processes. I then argue that there is substantial empirical support for the existence of the cognitive mechanisms needed to instantiate this view, coming from the science of emotion regulation. I argue that acceptance involves deploying the same mechanisms used in emotional response modulation to belief states: acceptance is doxastic response modulation. I then propose that having a better understanding of the psychological profile of acceptance leaves us better positioned to appreciate its potential usefulness for making progress on various puzzles within the ethics of belief.
