A systematic correlation is established between the axial load-carrying capacity of the socketed piles and empirical methods. The axial load-carrying capabilities were calculated with the help of pile load tests for ten single piles in Navi Mumbai, India. Pile load tests were carried out to evaluate the skin friction and base resistance in overlying soil and rock. The test results of axially loaded bored piles socketed into the rock are mentioned in this paper. The pile socket involved rocks of various strengths such as gypsum, limestone, and basalt. In reality, axial capacity is calculated from skin friction of the pile, which occurs owing to a very small settlement in the rock socket. The unconfined compressive strength of the rock is collected from the laboratory test. The load-bearing capability of the socketed piles is determined using several empirical methods, which are usually evaluated by a back-assessment of the in-situ pile load test. However, the significant load-carrying capacity values derived from empirical correlations are found to be reasonably good compared with those estimated from pile load tests. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Early childhood education and care (ECEC) is a crucial intervention because of its long‐term impact on child development. However, information concerning the effectiveness of the ECEC in developing countries like India is sparsely available. This empirical study drew upon primary data collected from India's eastern state, West Bengal and investigated whether attending preschool contributed to children's cognitive and social skill development. The study found that attending preschool did not provide dividends in the form of cognitive and social skill accumulation. Furthermore, attending private preschool was associated with socioemotional development but no cognitive development. Moreover, parents' education seems to be a strong predictor for child's development. Given the findings of this paper, preschools in India, both in the public and private sectors, would need considerable quality improvement to deliver developmentally appropriate ECEC to children. It is particularly relevant in the context of the new National Education Policy in India, which emphasises the need to provide universal access to high‐quality ECCE to all young children across the country. Because of urbanization, demand for housing is increasing day by day in India. Traditional clay brick leads to resource scarcity and environmental pollution. To overwhelmed this problem, manufacturing of bricks was done using the waste of thermal power plants like Fly Ash along with Sand and Cement (FAS-C Brick) as key ingredients. Fly ash is an Industrial by-product of thermal power plant. An experimental study of mix-design was carried out to increase the quality of the FAS-C brick. This paper attempt to formulate the mix design of fly ash based brick by process planning. Laboratory tests were conducted to determine the compressive strength and water absorption of the bricks. The main objective of the research study was to design the Fly Ash, Sand, Cement (FAS-C) brick and find the compressive strength using different mix design methods as a part of quality improvement process. Purpose: Even after COVID-19 pandemic, several organizations intend extending work-from-home (WFH), to the extent of making it permanent for many. However, WFH's impact on productivity remains uncertain. Therefore, this paper aims to study personal and job factors determining the likelihood of amount of work done at home being same/more vis-à-vis office. Design/methodology/approach: Employees' basic psychological needs and job crafting tendencies; job-related aspects of task independence, technology resources and supervisory support; and several demographic factors are examined as determinants. Firth logistic regression analysis of data from 301 Indian white-collar employees is performed. Findings: Demographically, longer exposure to WFH, greater work experience and being a support function worker increased the likelihood of same/greater amount of work done at home. Being a woman or married reduced the likelihood, while being a manufacturing/services worker was non-significant. Among psychological needs, greater needs for autonomy and relatedness decreased and increased the likelihood of same/greater amount of work done at home, respectively. Regarding personal and job resources, job crafting to increase structural job resources and supervisor support increased the likelihood of same/greater amount of work done at home versus office. Originality/value: This paper adds to the limited India-centric literature on WFH; uniquely examining influences of individual personal attributes on amount of work done by combining job demands-resources (JD-R) model and basic psychological needs theory. The paper investigates the twin deficit hypothesis in case of India. Furthermore, this paper examines the Ricardian equivalence hypothesis and the Feldstein‐Horioka puzzle to complement the twin deficit hypothesis. To substantiate objectives, annual time series data for the period 1970 to 2012 have been used. Time series econometrics techniques such as vector autoregressive model and auto regressive distributive lag model have been employed wherever necessary. The empirical findings suggest the rejection of twin deficit hypothesis and Feldstein‐Horioka puzzle. However, it validates the Ricardian equivalence hypothesis i.e the fiscal deficit does not affect the current account deficit. Purpose: This study aims to document the participation of intra-household decision-making activities by older adults in India. Design/methodology/approach: This study has used a nationally representative sample of 21,662 older adults (aged 60 and above) from the Longitudinal Ageing Study of India data of 2017–2018. Intra-household decision-making participation is measured based on decision-making activities that includes marriage of daughter/son, buying and selling of property, giving a gift to the family, education of family member and arrangement of social/religious events. This paper used bivariate analysis and binary logistic regression model to examine the factors associated with the participation of older adults in the intra-household decision-making activities. Findings: The result has shown that older persons' participation declined with increased age. This study has also found a difference in the participation of intra-households decision-making activities between male and female, rural and urban older adults, poor and rich older adults. Older adults with good health status who maintain social engagement and a good lifestyle are more likely to participate in the household's decision-making activities. Practical implications: Older adults with better economic and social status are more likely to participate in intra-household decision-making activities that make their life happier than the counterpart. Therefore, emphasis should be given to those vulnerable older adults who do not have any social and economic security in the society. Originality/value: There are limited studies available on intra-household decision-making participation by older adults. Sentiment analysis is an important research domain in text analytics and natural language processing. Since the last few decades, it has become a fascinating and salient area for researchers to understand human sentiment. According to the 2011 census, the Assamese language is spoken by 15 million people. Despite being a scheduled language of the Indian Constitution, it is still a resource-constrained language. Though it is an official language and presents its script, less work on sentiment analysis is reported in the Assamese language. In a linguistically diverse country like India, it is essential to provide a system to help people understand the sentiments in their native languages. So, the multilingual society in India would not be able to fully leverage the benefits of AI without the state-of-the-art NLP systems for the regional languages. Assamese language become popular due to its wide applications. Assamese users in social media as well as other platforms also are increasing day by day. Automatic sentiment analysis systems become effective for individuals, government, political parties, and other organizations and also can stop the negativity from spreading without a language divide. This paper presents a study on textual sentiment analysis using different lexical features of the Assamese news domain using machine learning and deep learning techniques. In the experiments, the baseline models are developed and compared against the models with lexical features. The proposed model with AAV lexical features based on XGBoost classifier predicts the highest accuracy of 86.76% with TF-IDF approach. It is observed that the combination of the lexical features with the machine learning classifier can significantly help the sentiment prediction in a small dataset scenario over the individual lexical features. Competitiveness of a country depends on the innovation capacity of its industries while sustainability relies upon the adoption of cleaner production processes. Hence, to promote economic development without negative environmental impact, it is imperative to have appropriate development policies and also a sound instrument to monitor the effectiveness of the supporting ecosystem. India, one of the world's largest economies with a huge base of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), makes it a perfect sample for creating an Index to measure innovation for sustainability and adds to the empirical literature. The study identifies the determinants of innovation and the key drivers using multivariate tools on the empirical data collected from the MSMEs in 4 key sectors that have Social, Economic, and Environmental relevance. The findings suggest that "Market sources" is the most influential determinant of innovation, followed by "Institutional sources", "Market sophistication" and "Business Membership Organisations". Further, findings of the Principal Component Analysis revealed that "Productivity and Profitability" consideration is the most important driver for adoption of innovation for sustainability by MSME units. The other drivers are "Regulatory and Occupational Health and Safety Needs"; "Immediate Survival Needs"; "Raw Material and other Cost Issues"; "Developmental Support", and "Competition from Similar Units". Based on the relative importance of these factors, an index is created to measure the effectiveness of the innovation ecosystem. The paper also suggests the use of this index to assess the strength of the ecosystem at the national, sectoral, regional or state, and district or cluster level. Issues with conventional depillaring techniques resulted in unscientific development of a number of coal seams into rectangular/square shaped pillars, mainly, located at shallow depths in different coalfields of India. Continuous miner based mechanised depillaring (MD) has been introduced to extract these coal pillars which is the main stage of production. The practise of leaving a proper sized rib/snook is a legal requirement as it decides the efficiency and safety of the MD operation. However, MD of square/rectangular shaped pillars created irregular-shaped-heightened-rib/snook. Conventional empirical formula is not capable to estimate strength of such ribs/snooks. These ribs/snooks should be of sufficient size to protect the adjacent slicing operation and junction as well as it should fail in a controlled manner when shifted inside the goaf. Field studies conducted at 39 panels of 7 different mines found a number of factors affecting the design of rib/snook. Proper assessment of performance of different sizes and shapes of ribs/snooks in field is difficult due to the complex and challenging underground mining environment of depillaring. These challenges prohibit a detailed study to be carried out in field. Therefore, parametric study on calibrated numerical model is conducted to estimate the strength of rib/snook with variation in sizes and heights of rib/snook and depth of cover. Further, an empirical relationship is developed to estimate the strength of rib/snook based on multivariate regression analysis. The values of strength estimated by the developed relationship is found to be least when compared with the popular pillar strength formulations due to effect of pillar/rib/snook spalling observed during field investigation with increase in depth of working.
