The sustainability of the transport sector is targeted by various policies adopted by the European Union, and their impact must be constantly monitored in order to maximize the desired objective. This paper, through a two-stage investigation, aims to present a systemic approach of the sustainability dimensions in transport and to introduce an innovative technique to analyze the interdependencies between them. In the first stage, relevant indicators were selected from the Eurostat database for the content of four dimensions: economic, environmental, social and technological. The robustness of the developed dimensions was assessed and validated through a confirmatory factor analysis. In the second stage, a Gaussian graphical model was estimated as a technique integrating graphical and statistical modeling to identify complex structures of linkages between variables (as components of each dimension of sustainability). The structure of the network clearly highlights the dependence of transport on fossil fuel consumption as the main determinant of pollution in the sector (CO2 emissions). In addition, the central role of railways in decarbonizing transport is highlighted, in contrast to the limited, and isolated at one end of the network, role of electric vehicles. The findings support that affordability of this new technology plays an important role in its impact on zero-emission transition. Concentrating on the period 2013–2022, at EU27 level, the results are relevant in the context of decarbonization policies, offering useful insights both for future research and policy makers. This paper presents a new technique for estimating the two-dimensional direction of departure (2D-DOD) and direction of arrival (2D-DOA) in bistatic uniform planar array Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) radar systems. The method is based on the reduced-dimension (RD) MUSIC algorithm, aiming to achieve improved precision and computational efficiency. Primarily, this pioneering approach efficiently transforms the four-dimensional (4D) estimation problem into two-dimensional (2D) searches, thus reducing the computational complexity typically associated with conventional MUSIC algorithms. Then, exploits the spatial diversity of array response vectors to construct a 4D spatial spectrum function, which is crucial in resolving the complex angular parameters of multiple simultaneous targets. Finally, the objective is to simplify the spatial spectrum to a 2D search within a 4D measurement space to achieve an optimal balance between efficiency and accuracy. Simulation results validate the effectiveness of our proposed algorithm compared to several existing approaches, demonstrating its robustness in accurately estimating 2D-DOD and 2D-DOA across various scenarios. The determination of a mobile terminal's position with high accuracy and ubiquitous coverage is still challenging. Global satellite navigation systems (GNSSs) provide sufficient accuracy in areas with a clear view to the sky. For GNSS-denied environments like indoors, complementary positioning technologies are required. A promising approach is to use the Earth's magnetic field for positioning. In open areas, the Earth's magnetic field is almost homogeneous, which makes it possible to determine the orientation of a mobile device using a compass. In more complex environments like indoors, ferromagnetic materials cause distortions of the Earth's magnetic field. A compass usually fails in such areas. However, these magnetic distortions are location dependent and therefore can be used for positioning. In this paper, we investigate the influence of elementary structures, in particular a sphere and a cylinder, on the achievable accuracy of magnetic positioning methods. In a first step, we analytically calculate the magnetic field around a sphere and a cylinder in an outer homogeneous magnetic field. Assuming a noisy magnetic field sensor, we investigate the achievable positioning accuracy when observing these resulting fields. For our analysis, we calculate the Cramér–Rao lower bound, which is a fundamental lower bound on the variance of an unbiased estimator. The results of our investigations show the dependency of the positioning error variance on the magnetic sensor properties, in particular the sensor noise variance and the material properties, i.e., the relative permeability of the sphere with respect to the cylinder and the location of the sensor relative to the sphere with respect to the cylinder. Sample selection is one of the most important factors in estimating the unknown parameters of distributions, as it saves time, saves effort, and gives the best results. One of the challenges is deciding on a suitable distribution estimate technique and adequate sample selection to provide the best results in comparison with earlier research. The method of moments (MOM) was decided on to estimate the unknown parameters of the Gumbel distribution, but with four changes in the sample selection, which were simple random sample (SRS), ranked set sampling (RSS), maximum ranked set sampling (MRSS), and ordered maximum ranked set sampling (OMRSS) techniques, due to small sample sizes. The MOM is a traditional method for estimation, but it is difficult to use when dealing with RSS modification. RSS modification techniques were used to improve the efficiency of the estimators based on a small sample size compared with the usual SRS estimator. A Monte Carlo simulation study was carried out to compare the estimates based on different sampling. Each year, numerous tornadoes occur in forested regions of the United States. Due to the substantial number of fallen trees and accessibility issues, many of these tornadoes remain poorly documented and evaluated. The process of documenting tree damage to assess tornado intensity is known as the treefall method, an established and reliable technique for estimating near-surface wind speed. Consequently, the demand for documenting fallen trees has increased in recent years. However, the treefall method proves to be extremely expensive and time-consuming, requiring a laborious assessment of each treefall instance. This research proposes a novel approach to evaluating treefall in large, forested regions using deep learning-based automated detection and advanced image processing techniques. The developed treefall method relies on high-resolution aerial imagery from a damaged forest and involves three main steps: (1) instance segmentation detection, (2) estimating tree taper and predicting fallen tree directions, and (3) obtaining subsampled treefall vector results indicating the predominant flow direction in geospatial coordinates. To demonstrate the method's effectiveness, the algorithm was applied to a tornado track rated EF-4, which occurred on 10 December 2021, cutting through the Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area in Kentucky. Upon observation of the predicted results, the model is demonstrated to accurately predict the predominant treefall angles. Parameter estimation is one of the most important tasks in statistics, and is key to helping people understand the distribution behind a sample of observations. Traditionally, parameter estimation is done either by closed-form solutions (e.g., maximum likelihood estimation for Gaussian distribution) or by iterative numerical methods such as the Newton–Raphson method when a closed-form solution does not exist (e.g., for Beta distribution). In this paper, we propose a transformer-based approach to parameter estimation. Compared with existing solutions, our approach does not require a closed-form solution or any mathematical derivations. It does not even require knowing the probability density function, which is needed by numerical methods. After the transformer model is trained, only a single inference is needed to estimate the parameters of the underlying distribution based on a sample of observations. In the empirical study, we compared our approach with maximum likelihood estimation on commonly used distributions such as normal distribution, exponential distribution and beta distribution. Ransomware attacks have emerged as a significant threat to critical data and systems, extending beyond traditional computers to mobile and IoT/Cyber–Physical Systems. This study addresses the need to detect early ransomware behavior when only limited data are available. A major step for training such a detection model is choosing a set of relevant and non-redundant features, which is challenging when data are scarce. Therefore, this paper proposes an incremental mutual information-selection technique as a method for selecting the relevant features at the early stages of ransomware attacks. It introduces an adaptive feature-selection technique that processes data in smaller, manageable batches. This approach lessens the computational load and enhances the system's ability to quickly adapt to new data arrival, making it particularly suitable for ongoing attacks during the initial phases of the attack. The experimental results emphasize the importance of the proposed technique in estimating feature significance in limited data scenarios. Gamma-ray spectroscopy (GRS) enables continuous estimation of soil water content (SWC) at the subfield scale with a noninvasive sensor. Hydrological applications, including hyper-resolution land surface models and precision agricultural decision making, could benefit greatly from such SWC information, but a gap exists between established theory and accurate estimation of SWC from GRS in the field. In response, we conducted a robust three-year field validation study at a well-instrumented agricultural site in Nebraska, United States. The study involved 27 gravimetric water content sampling campaigns in maize and soybean and 40K specific activity (Bq kg−1) measurements from a stationary GRS sensor. Our analysis showed that the current method for biomass water content correction is appropriate for our maize and soybean field but that the ratio of soil mass attenuation to water mass attenuation used in the theoretical equation must be adjusted to satisfactorily describe the field data. We propose a calibration equation with two free parameters: the theoretical 40K intensity in dry soil and a, which creates an "effective" mass attenuation ratio. Based on statistical analyses of our data set, we recommend calibrating the GRS sensor for SWC estimation using 10 profiles within the footprint and 5 calibration sampling campaigns to achieve a cross-validation root mean square error below 0.035 g g−1. The application of statistical estimation theory to Hong–Ou–Mandel interferometry led to enticing results in terms of the detection limit for photon reciprocal delay and polarisation measurement. In the following paper, a fully fibre-coupled setup operating in the telecom wavelength region proves to achieve, for the first time, in common-path Hong–Ou–Mandel-based interferometry, a detection limit for photon phase delay at the zeptosecond scale. The experimental results are then framed in a theoretical model by calculating the Cramer–Rao bound (CRB) and, after comparison with the obtained experimental results, it is shown that our setup attains the optimal measurement, nearly saturating CRB. Object detection and tracking are pivotal tasks in machine learning, particularly within the domain of computer vision technologies. Despite significant advancements in object detection frameworks, challenges persist in real-world tracking scenarios, including object interactions, occlusions, and background interference. Many algorithms have been proposed to carry out such tasks; however, most struggle to perform well in the face of disturbances and uncertain environments. This research proposes a novel approach by integrating the You Only Look Once (YOLO) architecture for object detection with a robust filter for target tracking, addressing issues of disturbances and uncertainties. The YOLO architecture, known for its real-time object detection capabilities, is employed for initial object detection and centroid location. In combination with the detection framework, the sliding innovation filter, a novel robust filter, is implemented and postulated to improve tracking reliability in the face of disturbances. Specifically, the sliding innovation filter is implemented to enhance tracking performance by estimating the optimal centroid location in each frame and updating the object's trajectory. Target tracking traditionally relies on estimation theory techniques like the Kalman filter, and the sliding innovation filter is introduced as a robust alternative particularly suitable for scenarios where a priori information about system dynamics and noise is limited. Experimental simulations in a surveillance scenario demonstrate that the sliding innovation filter-based tracking approach outperforms existing Kalman-based methods, especially in the presence of disturbances. In all, this research contributes a practical and effective approach to object detection and tracking, addressing challenges in real-world, dynamic environments. Noise removal is a critical stage in the preprocessing of point clouds, exerting a significant impact on subsequent processes such as point cloud classification, segmentation, feature extraction, and 3D reconstruction. The exploration of methods capable of adapting to and effectively handling the noise in point clouds from real-world outdoor scenes remains an open and practically significant issue. Addressing this issue, this study proposes an adaptive kernel approach based on local density and global statistics (AKA-LDGS). This method constructs the overall framework for point cloud denoising using Bayesian estimation theory. It dynamically sets the prior probabilities of real and noise points according to the spatial function relationship, which varies with the distance from the points to the center of the LiDAR. The probability density function (PDF) for real points is constructed using a multivariate Gaussian distribution, while the PDF for noise points is established using a data-driven, non-parametric adaptive kernel density estimation (KDE) approach. Experimental results demonstrate that this method can effectively remove noise from point clouds in real-world outdoor scenes while maintaining the overall structural features of the point cloud. Generative models have recently received a lot of attention. However, a challenge with such models is that it is usually not possible to compute the likelihood function, which makes parameter estimation or training of the models challenging. The most commonly used alternative strategy is called likelihood-free estimation, based on finding values of the model parameters such that a set of selected statistics have similar values in the dataset and in samples generated from the model. However, a challenge is how to select statistics that are efficient in estimating unknown parameters. The most commonly used statistics are the mean vector, variances, and correlations between variables, but they may be less relevant in estimating the unknown parameters. We suggest utilizing Tukey depth contours (TDCs) as statistics in likelihood-free estimation. TDCs are highly flexible and can capture almost any property of multivariate data, in addition, they seem to be as of yet unexplored for likelihood-free estimation. We demonstrate that TDC statistics are able to estimate the unknown parameters more efficiently than mean, variance, and correlation in likelihood-free estimation. We further apply the TDC statistics to estimate the properties of requests to a computer system, demonstrating their real-life applicability. Estimation of the region of attraction of the power system using sum of squares (SOS) programming theory is investigated in this paper. Firstly, the Taylor expansion formula is applied to explore the inherent polynomial structure of the swing equation. The single machine projection equation for a multi-machine system is proposed based on the amplitude characteristic of the rotor angle response in decoupled space. Secondly, the theory of SOS programming originating from the polynomial system is derived, and the theory about estimation of the region of attraction for the differential algebraic system is summarized. Thirdly, the method for estimating the region of attraction for the polynomial swing equation based on a V-S two-stage iterative procedure is proposed. Finally, a single machine infinite bus power system, an IEEE 3-machine power system, and an IEEE 4-machine power system are employed to validate the effectiveness and accuracy of the proposed method and analysis. We provide a formal statistical theory of consistent estimation of the set of all arbitrage portfolios that meet the description of being a stochastic arbitrage opportunity. Two empirical likelihood ratio tests are developed: one for the null that a given arbitrage portfolio is qualified, and another for the alternative that the portfolio is not qualified. Apart from considering generalized concepts and hypotheses based on multiple host portfolios, the statistical assumption framework is also more general than in earlier studies that focused on special cases with a single benchmark portfolio. Various extensions and generalizations of the theory are discussed. A Monte Carlo simulation study shows promising statistical size and power properties for testing the null, for representative data dimensions. Chlorophyll a and b content (Cab) and leaf area index (LAI) are two key parameters of crops, and their quantitative inversions are important for growth monitoring and the field management of wheat. However, due to the close correlation between the spectral signals of these two parameters and the effects of soil and atmospheric conditions, as well as modeling errors, synchronous retrieval of LAI and Cab from remote sensing data is still a challenging task. In a previous study, we introduced the optimal estimation theory and established the inversion framework by coupling the PROSAIL (PROSPECT + SAIL) model with the unified linearized vector radiative transfer model (UNL-VRTM). The framework fully utilizes the simulated radiance spectra for synchronous retrieval of Cab and LAI at the UAV observation scale and has good convergence and self-consistency. In this study, based on this inversion framework, synchronized retrieval of Cab and LAI was carried out by real wheat UAV observation data and validated with the ground-measured data. By comparing with the empirical statistical model constructed by the PROSAIL model and coupled model, least squares support vector machine (LSSVM), and random forest (RF), the proposed method has the highest accuracy of Cab and LAI estimated from UAV multispectral data (for Cab, R2 = 0.835, RMSE = 14.357; for LAI, R2 = 0.892, RMSE = 0.564). In this paper, we suggest a brand new extension of the inverse Lomax distribution for fitting engineering time data. The newly developed distribution, termed the transmuted Topp–Leone inverse Lomax (TTLILo) distribution, is characterized by an additional shape and transmuted parameters. It is critical to notice that the skewness, kurtosis, and tail weights of the distribution are strongly influenced by these additional characteristics of the extra parameters. The TTLILo model is capable of producing right-skewed, J-shaped, uni-modal, and reversed-J-shaped densities. The proposed model's statistical characteristics, including the moments, entropy values, stochastic ordering, stress-strength model, incomplete moments, and quantile function, are examined. Moreover, characterization based on two truncated moments is offered. Using Bayesian and non-Bayesian estimating techniques, we estimate the distribution parameters of the suggested distribution. The bootstrap procedure, approximation, and Bayesian credibility are the three forms of confidence intervals that have been created. A simulation study is used to assess the efficiency of the estimated parameters. The TTLILo model is then put to the test by being applied to actual engineering datasets, demonstrating that it offers a good match when compared to alternative models. Two applications based on real engineering datasets are taken into consideration: one on the failure times of airplane air conditioning systems and the other on the active repair times of airborne communication transceivers. The lymphocyte-specific protein tyrosine kinase (LCK) is a critical target in leukemia treatment. However, potential off-target interactions involving LCK can lead to unintended consequences. This underscores the importance of accurately predicting the inhibitory reactions of drug molecules with LCK during the research and development stage. To address this, we introduce an advanced ensemble machine learning technique designed to estimate the binding affinity between molecules and LCK. This comprehensive method includes the generation and selection of molecular fingerprints, the design of the machine learning model, hyperparameter tuning, and a model ensemble. Through rigorous optimization, the predictive capabilities of our model have been significantly enhanced, raising test R2 values from 0.644 to 0.730 and reducing test RMSE values from 0.841 to 0.732. Utilizing these advancements, our refined ensemble model was employed to screen an MCE -like drug library. Through screening, we selected the top ten scoring compounds, and tested them using the ADP-Glo bioactivity assay. Subsequently, we employed molecular docking techniques to further validate the binding mode analysis of these compounds with LCK. The exceptional predictive accuracy of our model in identifying LCK inhibitors not only emphasizes its effectiveness in projecting LCK-related safety panel predictions but also in discovering new LCK inhibitors. The design process of a borehole heat exchanger (BHE) requires knowledge of building thermal loads, the expected heat pump's COP and the ground's thermophysical properties. The thermal response test (TRT) is a common experimental technique for estimating the ground's thermal conductivity and borehole thermal resistance. In classic TRT, a constant heat transfer rate is provided above ground to the carrier fluid that circulates continuously inside a pilot BHE. The average fluid temperature is measured, and from its time-dependent evolution, it is possible to infer both the thermal resistance of the BHE and the thermal conductivity of the ground. The present paper investigates the possibility of a new approach for TRT with the continuous injection of heat directly into the BHE's grouting by means of electrical resistance imparted along the entire BHE's length, while local (along the depth) temperature measurements are acquired. This DTRT (distributed TRT) approach has seldom been applied and, in most applications, circulating hot fluid and optical fibers are used to infer depth-related temperatures. The distributed measurements allow the detection of thermal ground anomalies along the heat exchanger and even the presence of aquifer layers. The present paper investigates the new EDDTRT (electric depth-distributed TRT, under patenting) approach based on traditional instruments (e.g., RTD) or one-wire digital sensors. The accuracy of the proposed method is numerically assessed by Comsol Multiphysics simulations. Obtaining precise solar radiation data is the first stage in determining the availability of solar energy. It is also regarded as one of the major inputs for a variety of solar applications. Due to the scarcity of solar radiation measurement data for many locations throughout the world, many solar radiation models are utilized to predict global solar radiation. Indeed, the most widely used AI technique is artificial neural networks (ANNs). Hitherto, while ANNs have been utilized in various studies to estimate global solar radiation (GSR), limited attention has been given to the architecture of ANN. Thus, this study aimed to: first, optimize the design of one of the faster and most used machine-learning (ML) algorithms, the ANN, to forecast GSR more accurately while saving computation power; second, optimize the number of neurons in the hidden layer to obtain the most significant ANN model for accurate GSR estimation, since it is still lacking; in addition to investigating the impact of varying the number of neurons in the hidden layer on the proficiency of the ANN-based model to predict GSR with high accuracy; and, finally, conduct a comparative study between the ANN and empirical techniques for estimating GSR. The results showed that the best ANN model and the empirical model provided an excellent estimation for the GSR, with a Coefficient of Determination R 2 greater than 0.98%. Additionally, ANN architectures with a smaller number of neurons in the single hidden layer (1–3 neurons) provided the best performance, with R 2 > 0.98%. Furthermore, the performance of the developed ANN models remained approximately stable and excellent when the number of hidden layer's neurons was less than ten neurons ( R 2 > 0.97%), as their performance was very close to each other. However, the ANN models experienced performance instability when the number of hidden layer's neurons exceeded nine neurons. Furthermore, the performance comparison between the best ANN-based model and the empirical one revealed that both models performed well ( R 2 > 0.98%). Moreover, while the relative error for the best ANN model slightly exceeded the range, ±10% in November and December, it remained within the range for the empirical model even in the winter months. Additionally, the obtained results of the best ANN model in this work were compared with the recent related work. While it had a good RMSE value of 0.8361 MJ/m2 day−1 within the ranges of previous work, its correlation coefficient (r) was the best one. Therefore, the developed models in this study can be utilized for accurate GSR forecasting. This work uses resonant Raman spectroscopy (RRS) to investigate changes in carotenoid concentration in extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) as it oxidizes under accelerated thermal aging. Carotenoids are nutritious antioxidants and biomarkers that represent the general quality of olive oil. HPLC is the conventional method used to determine the concentration of carotenoids, but it is expensive, time-consuming, and requires sample handling. A simple optical technique for estimating carotenoid concentration in extra virgin olive oil is, therefore, desirable. This work shows that the normally weak carotenoid signal is strongly amplified when using the resonant Raman technique. The aging and oxidation of EVOO decreases the Raman intensities associated with carotenoids and increases the fluorescence and Raman intensities associated with fatty acids. The use of a 3D range scanning device for autonomous object description or unknown environment mapping leads to the necessity of improving computer methods based on identical point pairs from different point clouds (so-called registration problem). The registration problem and three-dimensional transformation of coordinates still require further research. The paper attempts to guide the reader through the vast field of existing registration methods so that he can choose the appropriate approach for his particular problem. Furthermore, the article contains a regression method that enables the estimation of the covariance matrix of the transformation parameters and the calculation of the uncertainty of the estimated points. This makes it possible to extend existing registration methods with uncertainty estimates and to improve knowledge about the performed registration. The paper's primary purpose is to present a survey of known methods and basic estimation theory concepts for the point cloud registration problem. The focus will be on the guiding principles of the estimation theory: ICP algorithm; Normal Distribution Transform; Feature-based registration; Iterative dual correspondences; Probabilistic iterative correspondence method; Point-based registration; Quadratic patches; Likelihood-field matching; Conditional random fields; Branch-and-bound registration; PointReg. The construction year of road bridges plays an important role in bridge management systems. Based on the age of road bridges and other factors, deterministic and probabilistic deterioration models can be used to calculate deterioration rates and predict the future physical condition of road bridges. Two new techniques are proposed in this manuscript for estimating the construction year of road bridges by analyzing the normalized difference water index 2 (NDWI_2). Technique 1 uses both the target bridge point (TBP) and a selected optimal reference control point, while Technique 2 uses only the TBP. Landsat 5 Thematic Mapper NDWI_2 data were analyzed at all 44 road bridges in Nago City, Japan of the bridges' overall length ≤ 100 m and construction year between 1990 and 2006. The sequential t-test analysis of the regime shift method, at a significance level α = 0.05 and cutoff length l = 2 to l = 27, was used to interpret the estimated construction year from the NDWI_2 for both techniques. Both techniques successfully determined the estimated construction year, which was statistically significant with p-values < 0.05, except for seven road bridges in Technique 1 and one road bridge in Technique 2. The correlation and comparative analysis of the actual and estimated construction years yielded R 2 = 0.24 and R 2 = 0.33, as well as an average deviation of S = 5.81 years and S = 4.08 years for Technique 1 and Technique 2, respectively. The findings suggest that Technique 2 is more accurate and provides a better estimate than Technique 1. It was observed that, as the cutoff length l increased, the absolute error between the actual and estimated construction year increased. Accurate determination of crop phenology information is essential for effective field management and decision-making processes. Remote sensing time series analyses are widely employed to extract the phenological stages. Each crop's phenological stage has its unique characteristic on the crop plant, while the satellite-derived crop phenology refers to some key transition dates in time series satellite observations. Current techniques primarily estimate specific phenological stages by detecting points with distinctive features on the remote sensing time series curve. But these stages may be different from the Biologische Bundesanstalt, Bundessortenamt and CHemical Industry (BBCH) scale, which is commonly used to identify the phenological development stages of crops. Moreover, when aiming to extract various phenological stages concurrently, it becomes necessary to adjust the extraction strategy for each unique feature. This need for distinct strategies at each stage heightens the complexity of simultaneous extraction. In this study, we utilize the Sentinel-2 Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) time series data and propose a phenology extraction framework based on the Derivative Dynamic Time Warping (DDTW) algorithm. This method is capable of simultaneously extracting complete phenological stages, and the results demonstrate that the Root Mean Square Errors (RMSEs, days) of detected phenology on the BBCH scale for corn were less than 6 days overall. Farmers utilize pesticides extensively on their farms to control weeds and insects, as well as increase crop productivity. Despite these advantages, their excessive use poses a serious threat, particularly to the population living at the nexus of urban and rural areas. Exposure to pesticide drift can be investigated using geospatial tools. Remote sensing technology and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) techniques have been used intensively and constitute trusted tools in different sectors, especially in agriculture. Remote sensing depends on processing the electromagnetic radiation reflected and emitted from the ground target and can be used to identify the main units of Land Use Land Cover (LULC), in addition to measuring crop areas exposed to pesticides. GIS has powerful tools for building a spatial geo-database of pesticide exposure drift. Therefore, the major objective of the research was to explore the effectiveness of using remote sensing and GIS techniques to estimate the exposure organophosphate pesticides drift over Macon County, Alabama. To achieve this objective, the Cropland Data Layer (CDL) dataset, the available pesticide usage data, and gridded population data were used to estimate the potential pesticide drift on the Macon County level. In addition, the AgDRIFT model was used to estimate the potential drift of pesticides from their intended targets at the field level. The results indicated that 6.6% of Macon County's residents are considered potentially severely exposed, and the potentially affected population resides primarily in rural areas. In comparison, 23% of residents of the urban-rural interface are considered to have potentially medium to high exposure. In addition, 38% of residents living in suburban areas are considered to have potentially low-to-medium exposure. The results indicated that both GIS and remote sensing could play an effective role in estimating pesticide exposure drift at the State or County level. The ability to sense airborne pollutants with mobile robots provides a valuable asset for domains such as industrial safety and environmental monitoring. Oftentimes, this involves detecting how certain gases are spread out in the environment, commonly referred to as a gas distribution map, to subsequently take actions that depend on the collected information. Since the majority of gas transducers require physical contact with the analyte to sense it, the generation of such a map usually involves slow and laborious data collection from all key locations. In this regard, this paper proposes an efficient exploration algorithm for 2D gas distribution mapping with an autonomous mobile robot. Our proposal combines a Gaussian Markov random field estimator based on gas and wind flow measurements, devised for very sparse sample sizes and indoor environments, with a partially observable Markov decision process to close the robot's control loop. The advantage of this approach is that the gas map is not only continuously updated, but can also be leveraged to choose the next location based on how much information it provides. The exploration consequently adapts to how the gas is distributed during run time, leading to an efficient sampling path and, in turn, a complete gas map with a relatively low number of measurements. Furthermore, it also accounts for wind currents in the environment, which improves the reliability of the final gas map even in the presence of obstacles or when the gas distribution diverges from an ideal gas plume. Finally, we report various simulation experiments to evaluate our proposal against a computer-generated fluid dynamics ground truth, as well as physical experiments in a wind tunnel. Subdivision schemes are equipped with some rules that take a polygon as an input and produce smooth curves or surfaces as an output. This presents the issue of how accurately the polygon approximates the limit curve and surface. What number of iterations/levels would be necessary to achieve the required shape at a user-specified error tolerance? In fact, several methods have been introduced in the case of stationary schemes to address the issue in terms of the error bounds (distance between polygon/polyhedron and limiting shape) and subdivision depth (the number of iterations required to obtain the result at a user-specified error tolerance). However, in the case of non-stationary schemes, this topic needs to be further studied to meet the requirements of new practical applications. This paper highlights a new approach based on a convolution technique to estimate error bounds and subdivision depth for non-stationary schemes. The given technique is independent of any condition on the coefficient of the non-stationary subdivision schemes, and it also produces the best results with the least amount of computational effort. In this paper, we first associated constants with the vectors generated by the given non-stationary schemes, then formulated an expression for the convolution product. This expression gives real values, which monotonically decrease with the increase in the order of the convolution in both the curve and surface cases. This convolution feature plays an important role in obtaining the user-defined error tolerance with fewer iterations. It achieves a trade-off between the number of iterations and user-specified errors. Canonical Correlation Analysis (CCA) infers a pairwise linear relationship between two groups of random variables, X and Y. In this paper, we present a new procedure based on Rényi's pseudodistances (RP) aiming to detect linear and non-linear relationships between the two groups. RP canonical analysis (RPCCA) finds canonical coefficient vectors, a and b , by maximizing an RP-based measure. This new family includes the Information Canonical Correlation Analysis (ICCA) as a particular case and extends the method for distances inherently robust against outliers. We provide estimating techniques for RPCCA and show the consistency of the proposed estimated canonical vectors. Further, a permutation test for determining the number of significant pairs of canonical variables is described. The robustness properties of the RPCCA are examined theoretically and empirically through a simulation study, concluding that the RPCCA presents a competitive alternative to ICCA with an added advantage in terms of robustness against outliers and data contamination. Today, synthetic aperture radar (SAR) satellites provide large amounts of SAR data at unprecedented temporal resolutions, which promotes hazard dynamic monitoring and disaster mitigation with interferometric SAR (InSAR) technology. This study focuses on big InSAR data dynamical processing in areas of serious decorrelation and large gradient deformation. A new stepwise temporal phase optimization method is proposed to alleviate the decorrelation, customized for deformation parameter dynamical estimation. Subsequently, the sequential estimation theory is introduced to the intermittent small baseline subset (ISBAS) approach to dynamically obtain deformation time series with dense coherent targets. Then, we analyze the reason for the unstable accuracy of deformation parameters using sequential distributed scatterers-ISBAS technology, and construct five indices to describe the quality of deformation parameters pixel-by-pixel. Existing video Quality-of-Experience (QoE) metrics rely on the decoded video for the estimation. In this work, we explore how the overall viewer experience, quantified via the QoE score, can be automatically derived using only information available before and during the transmission of videos, on the server side. To validate the merits of the proposed scheme, we consider a dataset of videos encoded and streamed under different conditions and train a novel deep learning architecture for estimating the QoE of the decoded video. Robust soil organic matter (SOM) mapping is required by farms, but their generation requires a large number of samples to be chemically analyzed, which is cost prohibitive. Recently, research has shown that visible and near-infrared (vis-NIR) reflectance spectroscopy is a fast and accurate technique for estimating SOM in a cost-effective manner. However, few studies have focused on using vis-NIR spectroscopy as a covariate to improve the accuracy of spatial modeling. In this study, our objective was to compare the mapping accuracy from a spatial model using kriging methods with and without the covariate of vis-NIR spectroscopy. We split the 261 samples into a calibration set (104) for building the spectral predictive model, a test set for generating the vis-NIR augmented set from the prediction of the fitted spectral predictive model (131), and a validation set (26) for evaluating map accuracy. We used two datasets (235 samples) for Kriging: a laboratory-based dataset (Ld, observations from calibration and test datasets) and a laboratory-based dataset with vis-NIR augmented predictions (Au.p, observations from calibration and predictions from test dataset), a laboratory-based dataset with vis-NIR spectra as the covariance (Ld.co) and augmented dataset with predictions using vis-NIR with vis-NIR spectra for the covariance (Au.p.co). The first one to seven accumulated principal components of vis-NIR spectra were used as the covariates when we used the measurement of Ld.co and Au.p.co. The map accuracy was evaluated by the validation set for the four datasets using Kriging. The results indicated that adding vis-NIR spectra as covariates had great potential in improving the map accuracy using kriging, and much higher accuracies were observed for Ld.p.co (RMSE of 5.51 g kg−1) and Au.p.co (RMSE of 5.66 g kg−1) than without using vis-NIR spectra as covariates for Ld (RMSE of 7.12 g kg−1) and Au.p (RMSE of 7.69 g kg−1). With a similar model performance to Ld.p.co, Au.p.co can reduce the cost of laboratory analysis for 60% of soil samples, demonstrating its advantage in cost-efficiency for spatial modeling of soil information. We make use of the powerful formalism of quantum parameter estimation to assess the characteristic rates of a continuous spontaneous localization (CSL) model affecting the motion of a massive mechanical system. We show that a study performed in non-equilibrium conditions unveils the advantages provided by the use of genuinely quantum resources—such as quantum correlations—in estimating the CSL-induced diffusion rate. In stationary conditions, instead, the gap between quantum performance and a classical scheme disappears. The half-logistic modified Kies exponential (HLMKEx) distribution is a novel three-parameter model that is introduced in the current work to expand the modified Kies exponential distribution and improve its flexibility in modeling real-world data. Due to its versatility, the density function of the HLMKEx distribution offers symmetrical, asymmetrical, unimodal, and reversed-J-shaped, as well as increasing, reversed-J shaped, and upside-down hazard rate forms. An infinite linear representation can be used to represent the HLMKEx density. The HLMKEx model's fundamental mathematical features are obtained, such as the quantile function, moments, incomplete moments, and moments of residuals. Additionally, some measures of uncertainty as well as stochastic ordering are derived. To estimate its parameters, eight estimation methods are used. With the use of detailed simulation data, we compare the performance of each estimating technique and obtain partial and total ranks for the accuracy measures of absolute bias, mean squared error, and mean absolute relative error. The simulation results demonstrate that, in contrast to other competing distributions, the proposed distribution can actually fit the data more accurately. Two actual data sets are investigated in the field of engineering to demonstrate the adaptability and application of the suggested distribution. The reliability of software has a tremendous influence on the reliability of systems. Software dependability models are frequently utilized to statistically analyze the reliability of software. Numerous reliability models are based on the nonhomogeneous Poisson method (NHPP). In this respect, in the current study, a novel NHPP model established on the basis of the new power function distribution is suggested. The mathematical formulas for its reliability measurements were found and are visually illustrated. The parameters of the suggested model are assessed utilizing the weighted nonlinear least-squares, maximum-likelihood, and nonlinear least-squares estimation techniques. The model is subsequently verified using a variety of reliability datasets. Four separate criteria were used to assess and compare the estimating techniques. Additionally, the effectiveness of the novel model is assessed and evaluated with two foundation models both objectively and subjectively. The breathing rate monitoring is an important measure in medical applications and daily physical activities. The contact sensors have shown their effectiveness for breathing monitoring and have been mostly used as a standard reference, but with some disadvantages for example in burns patients with vulnerable skins. Contactless monitoring systems are then gaining attention for respiratory frequency detection. We propose a new non-contact technique to estimate the breathing rate based on the motion video magnification method by means of the Hermite transform and an Artificial Hydrocarbon Network (AHN). The chest movements are tracked by the system without the use of an ROI in the image video. The machine learning system classifies the frames as inhalation or exhalation using a Bayesian-optimized AHN. The method was compared using an optimized Convolutional Neural Network (CNN). This proposal has been tested on a Data-Set containing ten healthy subjects in four positions. The percentage error and the Bland–Altman analysis is used to compare the performance of the strategies estimating the breathing rate. Besides, the Bland–Altman analysis is used to search for the agreement of the estimation to the reference.The percentage error for the AHN method is 2.19 ± 2.1 with and agreement with respect of the reference of ≈99%. Fault location on overhead power lines achieved with the highest possible accuracy can reduce the time to locate faults. This contributes to ensuring the stability of power systems, as well as the reliability of power supply to consumers. There are a number of known mathematical techniques based on different physical principles that are used in fault location on overhead power lines and whose errors vary. Fault location on overhead power lines uses techniques based on the estimation of emergency state parameters, which are referred to as distance-to-fault techniques and are widely used. They are employed in digital protection relay terminals and power-line fault locators. Factors that have a significant impact on the error of fault location on overhead power lines by emergency state parameters are design, manufacturing, and operation. The aim of this article is to analyze the existing techniques and to present a new analytical technique for estimating errors of fault location on overhead power lines by using emergency state parameters. The technique developed by the authors makes it possible to properly take into account a set of random factors, including various measurement errors of currents and voltages in the emergency state, which have a significant impact on the fault location on overhead power lines error. The technique allows one to determine more accurately the fault location and the size of the inspection area, which is necessary to reduce the time it takes to carry out emergency recovery operations. To meet the demand for the aerosol detection of single-angle and multi-band polarization instrument containing short-wave infrared bands, an inversion algorithm that makes full use of multi-band intensity and polarization information is proposed based on optimal estimation theory. This method uses the polarization information in the short-wave infrared band to perform surface and atmosphere decoupling without a prior information on the surface. This obtains the initial value of the aerosol, and then it uses the scalar information to obtain the final result. Moreover, the multi-band information of the instrument is used for decoupling the surface and atmospheric information, which avoids the inversion error caused by the untimely update of the surface reflectance database and the error of spatio-temporal matching. The measured data of the Particulate Observing Scanning Polarimeter (POSP) are used to test the proposed algorithm. Firstly, to verify the effectiveness of the algorithm under different surface conditions, four regions with large geographical differences (Beijing, Hefei, Baotou, and Taiwan) are selected for aerosol optical depth (AOD) inversion, and they are compared with the aerosol robotic network (AERONET) products of the nearby stations. The validation against the AERONET products produces high correlation coefficients of 0.982, 0.986, 0.718, and 0.989, respectively, which verifies the effectiveness of the algorithm in different regions. Further, we analyzed the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm under different pollution conditions. Regions with AOD >0.7 and AOD < 0.7 are screened by using the AOD products of the Moderate-Resolution Imaging Spectroradiomete (MODIS), and the AOD of the corresponding region is inverted using POSP data. It was found to be spatially consistent with the MODIS products. The correlation coefficient and root mean square error (RMSE) in the AOD high region were 0.802 and 0.217, respectively, and 0.944 and 0.022 in the AOD low region, respectively, which verified the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm under different pollution conditions. Estimating the amount of solar radiation is very important in evaluating the amount of energy that can be received from the sun for the construction of solar power plants. Using machine learning tools to estimate solar energy can be a helpful method. With a high number of sunny days, Iraq has a high potential for using solar energy. This study used the Wavelet Artificial Neural Network (WANN), Wavelet Support Vector Machine (WSVM), and Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy Inference System (ANFIS) techniques to estimate solar energy at Wasit and Dhi Qar stations in Iraq. RMSE, EMA, R2, and IA criteria were used to evaluate the performance of the techniques and compare the results with the actual measured value. The results showed that the WANN and WSVM methods had similar results in solar energy modeling. However, the results of the WANN technique were slightly better than the WSVM technique. In Wasit and Dhi Qar stations, the value of R2 for the WANN and WSVM methods was 0.89 and 0.86, respectively. The value of R2 in the WANN and WSVM methods in Wasit and Dhi Qar stations was 0.88 and 0.87, respectively. The ANFIS technique also obtained acceptable results. The diagnostic fracture injection test (DFIT) is widely used to obtain the fracture closure pressure, reservoir permeability, and reservoir pressure. Conventional methods for analyzing DFIT are based on the assumption that a vertical well is drilled in ultra-low permeability reservoirs with potential multiple closures but fails to consider horizontal wells. There is still significant debate about the rigorousness and validity of these techniques due to the complexity of the hydraulic fracture opening and closure process and assumptions of conventional fracture detection methods. The paper introduces a new method for detecting fracture closure pressure using the continuous wavelet transform (CWT). The new method aims to decompose the pressure fall-off signal into multiple levels with different frequencies using the CWT. This "short wavy" function is stretched or compressed and placed at many positions along the signal to be analyzed. The wavelet then convoluted the signal yielding a wavelet coefficient value. The signal energy is observed during the fracture closure process (pressure fall-off) and the fracture closure event is identified when the signal energy stabilizes to a minimum level. This work studies the underwater detection and tracking of diver targets under a low signal-to-reverberation ratio (SRR) in active sonar systems. In particular, a particle filter track-before-detect based on a knowledge-aided (KA-PF-TBD) algorithm is proposed. Specifically, the original echo data is directly used as the input of the algorithm, which avoids the information loss caused by threshold detection. Considering the prior motion knowledge of the underwater diver target, we established a multi-directional motion model as the state transition model. An efficient method for calculating the statistical characteristics of echo data about the extended target is proposed based on the non-parametric kernel density estimation theory. The multi-directional movement model set and the statistical characteristics of the echo data are used as the knowledge-aided information of the particle filter process: this is used to calculate the particle weight with the sub-area instead of the whole area, and then the particles with the highest weight are used to estimate the target state. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm is proved by simulation and sea-level experimental data analysis through joint evaluation of detection and tracking performance. Quiescent faults may be capable of creating catastrophic earthquakes in locations with moderate and/or low seismic activity, such as Egypt. This study combines structural, remote sensing ( R S ), geophysical, and seismic activity data to examine and analyze the relationship between tectonic structures and seismotectonic activity in Egypt. In a new seismo-lineaments map of Egypt, tectonic lineaments of the Egyptian mainland were delineated and classified. The database contains 8000 lineaments that were divided into distinct geographical zones using statistical analysis and general features. Delineated lineaments were integrated with digitized geological and geophysical surface and subsurface faults and geographic information systems ( G I S ) processing techniques were applied to produce 4249 faults. The spatial distribution of seismic activity was determined to extract 1968 competent faults out of 4249 capable faults (i.e., greater than 10 km and suitably orientated concerning the existing stress field). Maximum expected magnitudes ( M m a x ) were calculated for distinct seismogenic locations in Egypt, taking into account the nature of the regional rupture. At the national scale, empirical scaling relations between fault lengths and earthquake magnitude were employed for all mapped faults in Egypt. The findings concerning the faults were highly consistent with traditional geological information. The results suggest that our technique for estimating the highest predicted magnitudes produces similar values and might be used to evaluate Egypt's possible future seismic hazard. Vehicle teleoperation has the ability to bridge the gap between completely automated driving and manual driving by remotely monitoring and operating autonomous vehicles when their automation fails. Among many challenges related to vehicle teleoperation, the considered ones in this work are variable time delay, saturation of actuators installed in vehicle, and environmental disturbance, which together limit the teleoperation performance. State-of-the-art predictive techniques estimate vehicle states to compensate for the delays, but the predictive states do not account for sudden disturbances that the vehicle observes, which makes the human-picked steer inadequate. This inadequacy of steer deteriorates the path-tracking performance of vehicle teleoperation. In the proposed successive reference-pose-tracking (SRPT) approach, instead of transmitting steering commands, the reference trajectory, in the form of successive reference poses, is transmitted to the vehicle. This paper introduces a method of generation of successive reference poses with a joystick steering wheel and compares the human-in-loop path-tracking performance of the Smith predictor and SRPT approach. Human-in-loop experiments (with 18 different drivers) are conducted using a simulation environment that consists of the integration of a real-time 14-DOF Simulink vehicle model and Unity game engine in the presence of bidirectional variable delays. Scenarios for performance comparison are low adhesion ground, strong lateral wind, tight corners, and sudden obstacle avoidance. The literature since Apollo contains exhaustive material on attitude filtering, usually treating the problem of two sensors, a combination of state measuring and inertial devices. More recently, it has become popular for a sole attitude determination device to be considered. This is especially the case for a star tracker given its unbiased stellar measurement and recent improvements in optical sensor performance. The state device indirectly estimates the attitude rate using a known dynamic model. In estimation theory, two main attitude filtering approaches are classified, the additive and the multiplicative. Each refers to the nature of the quaternion update in the filter. In this article, these two techniques are implemented for the case of a sole star tracker, using simulated and real night sky image data. Both sets of results are presented and compared with each other, with a baseline established through a basic linear least square estimate. The state approach is more accurate and precise for measuring angular velocity than using the error-based filter. However, no discernible difference is observed between each technique for determining pointing. These results are important not only for sole device attitude determination systems, but also for space situational awareness object localisation, where attitude and rate estimate accuracy are highly important. In this paper, a new filter referred to as the alpha sliding innovation filter (ASIF) is presented. The sliding innovation filter (SIF) is a newly developed estimation strategy that uses innovation or measurement error as a switching hyperplane. It is a sub-optimal filter that provides a robust and stable estimate. In this paper, the SIF is reformulated by including a forgetting factor, which significantly improves estimation performance. The proposed ASIF is applied to several systems including a first-order thermometer, a second-order spring-mass-damper, and a third-order electrohydrostatic actuator (EHA) that was built for experimentation. As there is an urgent need to protect rapidly declining global diversity, it is important to identify methods to quickly estimate the diversity and heterogeneity of a region and effectively implement monitoring and conservation plans. The combination of remotely sensed and field-collected data, under the paradigm of the Spectral Variation Hypothesis (SVH), represents one of the most promising approaches to boost large-scale and reliable biodiversity monitoring practices. Here, the potential of SVH to capture information on plant diversity at a fine scale in an ecological network (EN) embedded in a complex landscape has been tested using two new and promising methodological approaches: the first estimates α and β spectral diversity and the latter ecosystem spectral heterogeneity expressed as Rao's Quadratic heterogeneity measure (Rao's Q). Both approaches are available thanks to two brand-new R packages: "biodivMapR" and "rasterdiv". Our aims were to investigate if spectral diversity and heterogeneity provide reliable information to assess and monitor over time floristic diversity maintained in an EN selected as an example and located in northeast Italy. We analyzed and compared spectral and taxonomic α and β diversities and spectral and landscape heterogeneity, based on field-based plant data collection and remotely sensed data from Sentinel-2A, using different statistical approaches. We observed a positive relationship between taxonomic and spectral diversity and also between spectral heterogeneity, landscape heterogeneity, and the amount of alien species in relation to the native ones, reaching a value of R2 = 0.36 and R2 = 0.43, respectively. Our results confirmed the effectiveness of estimating and mapping α and β spectral diversity and ecosystem spectral heterogeneity using remotely sensed images. Moreover, we highlighted that spectral diversity values become more effective to identify biodiversity-rich areas, representing the most important diversity hotspots to be preserved. The current work makes use of the geometrical configuration of the two lower-altitude Swarm satellites (Swarm A and C), moving side by side with a longitudinal distance of 1.4°, to estimate a two-dimensional (2D) model of the lithospheric magnetic anomaly field over Egypt using gradient data. The gradient in both the north–south and the east–west directions have been inverted using the weighted damping least-squares fit technique to estimate the best model coefficients of the 2D model. The best model coefficients have been obtained under the expansion of the Legendre polynomial from degree n = 7 to n = 56. Results showed that the gradient of the field in the north–south direction is always much smoother than that in the east–west direction. The noise in the east–west direction is attributed to the different environmental conditions surrounding both satellites. The botanical and chemical composition of diets consumed by ruminants is different from the composition of plant species available in the rangeland or pastures on which they graze. Exploring alternative and improving existing methods of estimating botanical composition (diet selection) is imperative in advancing sustainable feeding practices in extensive production systems. The ability to predict the intake and digestibility of the diet consumed is important in designing grazing management for different feeding systems as well as supplementation strategies. This facilitates the efficient use of feed resources for optimal animal performance. This review assesses the merits, limitations, and potential advancements in techniques used to estimate botanical composition, forage intake, and digestibility in ruminants. Supplements containing sufficient quantity and identifiable n-alkanes can be used to determine the total forage intake in grazing ruminants without dosing the animals with synthetic even-numbered n-alkanes. When the botanical composition, intake, and digestibility of diet are estimated using internal markers, the results should be validated with those of faecal near-infrared reflectance spectroscopy (NIRS) or plant cuticular compounds to enhance the prediction accuracy. This should be done to determine the degree of error in the use of internal markers. Conclusively, the use of internal markers with automated solver routine software is a prudent approach to predicting botanical composition due to the analytical ease of the markers involved and the associated model assumptions. There is high demand for techniques to estimate human mental workload during some activities for productivity enhancement or accident prevention. Most studies focus on a single physiological sensing modality and use univariate methods to analyse multi-channel electroencephalography (EEG) data. This paper proposes a new framework that relies on the features of hybrid EEG–functional near-infrared spectroscopy (EEG–fNIRS), supported by machine-learning features to deal with multi-level mental workload classification. Furthermore, instead of the well-used univariate power spectral density (PSD) for EEG recording, we propose using bivariate functional brain connectivity (FBC) features in the time and frequency domains of three bands: delta (0.5–4 Hz), theta (4–7 Hz) and alpha (8–15 Hz). With the assistance of the fNIRS oxyhemoglobin and deoxyhemoglobin (HbO and HbR) indicators, the FBC technique significantly improved classification performance at a 77% accuracy for 0-back vs. 2-back and 83% for 0-back vs. 3-back using a public dataset. Moreover, topographic and heat-map visualisation indicated that the distinguishing regions for EEG and fNIRS showed a difference among the 0-back, 2-back and 3-back test results. It was determined that the best region to assist the discrimination of the mental workload for EEG and fNIRS is different. Specifically, the posterior area performed the best for the posterior midline occipital (POz) EEG in the alpha band and fNIRS had superiority in the right frontal region (AF8). Quantum Fisher Information is considered in Quantum Information literature as the main resource to determine a bound in the parametric characterization problem of a quantum channel by means of probe states. The parameters characterizing a quantum channel can be estimated until a limited precision settled by the Cramér–Rao bound established in estimation theory and statistics. The involved Quantum Fisher Information of the emerging quantum state provides such a bound. Quantum states with dimension d = 2 , the qubits, still comprise the main resources considered in Quantum Information and Quantum Processing theories. For them, Pauli channels are an important family of parametric quantum channels providing the most faithful deformation effects of imperfect quantum communication channels. Recently, Pauli channels have been characterized when they are arranged in an Indefinite Causal Order. Thus, their fidelity has been compared with single or sequential arrangements of identical channels to analyse their induced transparency under a joint behaviour. The most recent characterization has exhibited important features for quantum communication related with their parametric nature. In this work, a parallel analysis has been conducted to extended such a characterization, this time in terms of their emerging Quantum Fisher Information to pursue the advantages of each kind of arrangement for the parameter estimation problem. The objective is to reach the arrangement stating the best estimation bound for each type of Pauli channel. A complete map for such an effectivity is provided for each Pauli channel under the most affordable setups considering sequential and Indefinite Causal Order arrangements, as well as discussing their advantages and disadvantages.
