It is difficult to predict the detailed morphodynamic processes induced by heavily sediment-laden floods in alluvial rives, due to the complexity in topography and the significant channel evolution rates, especially in a braided reach of the Lower Yellow River (LYR). A two-dimensional morphodynamic model using a coupled solution approach was firstly developed, with the effects of sediment concentration and bed deformation being directly considered in the hydrodynamic governing equations. The finite volume method with the HLL-MUSCL scheme was adopted in the numerical solution, which can obtain second-order accuracy in space and time. In addition, unstructured meshes were used to accommodate the irregular boundaries. The proposed model was validated using measurements in the braided reach of the LYR during the flood events of 2020 and 2004, with general agreement obtained between the calculated and measured hydrographs of flow and sediment concentration. The highest accuracy was achieved in the simulation of discharge, with a Nash-Sutcliffe efficiency coefficient (NSE) of 0.92. The simulation accuracy in sediment concentration was improved by the coupled approach, with the relative error of the calculated peak value decreasing from 17 % to 9 %. In addition, transport characteristics of graded suspended sediments were well simulated, with the fine fraction being transported downstream and the medium fraction depositing in the study reach. Influences of channel adjustments on the sediment transport processes were investigated during a flood event. The results demonstrated that the incised channel in 2020 was characterized by a larger water depth and smaller velocity, as compared with the shallow channel in 2004. Consequently, the peak discharge decreased and the flood propagation time was extended under the 2020 topography, associated with the lower sediment discharge at the outlet due to the reduced sediment transport capacity. Atolls islands are biogenic landforms that are intrinsically capable of adjusting their size, position, and elevation to changing sea levels. The vulnerability of atoll islands to sea level rise is not intrinsically due to their low elevation but primarily due to the loss of their island building capacity. The geophysical processes that control atoll island accretion are being impacted on global and local scales. Protecting and restoring the natural geophysical processes of atoll island accretion through local conservation actions is key to unlocking nature-based opportunities for enhancing atoll resilience to global change. Atoll islands are often perceived as inevitably lost due to rising sea levels. However, unlike other islands, atoll islands are dynamic landforms that have evolved, at least historically, to vertically accrete at a pace commensurate with changing sea levels. Rather than atoll islands' low elevation per se , the impairment of natural accretion processes is jeopardising their persistence. While global marine impacts are deteriorating coral reefs, local impacts also significantly affect accretion, together potentially tipping the scales toward atoll island erosion. Maintaining atoll island accretion requires intact sediment generation on coral reefs, unobstructed sediment transport from reef to island, and available vegetated deposition sites on the island. We have analyzed concentrations of Mo, Re and U in the suspended particles, water column, underlying carbonate-dominated sediments and pore waters of two contrasting marine lakes situated on the Adriatic Coast of Croatia. Our data are the first for Re in these lakes. Rogoznica Lake is mainly euxinic, but subject to occasional oxygenation events, whereas Mljet Island's Malo Jezero is currently oxic year around but historically was seasonally euxinic. These characteristics make the lakes useful testing grounds for redox proxies. We devote particular attention to Re/Mo ratios, which have great promise as redox proxies. In marine sediments, the range of log[Re auth /Mo auth ] exceeds 2, and typical analytical uncertainty is ±0.05, providing resolving power similar to δ98Mo. Authigenic [Re s /Mo s ] ratios in sediments depend on varying supplies of three components: FeMo,Re)S 4 coprecipitates, Fe(III) oxyhydroxides (plus Mn(III,IV) oxyhydroxides in some cases) and a still-uncharacterized Re-rich, Mo-poor component possibly of biological origin. Removal of the latter component explains a 50% depletion of Re aq without Mo aq from Rogoznica's oxic waters. Water column concentrations of Mo aq and Re aq , as well as [Re s /Mo s ] ratios in Rogoznica's suspended particles are predicted successfully by a model that attributes these elements' removal from sulfidic seawater solely to coprecipitation in Fe(Mo,Re)S 4 , assuming a partition coefficient of 0.6. However, to predict sediment compositions, additional authigenic Mo supplied by mainly Fe(III) oxyhydroxides during sporadic oxygenation events must be considered. In Malo Jezero, sulfide concentrations are too low even in pore waters for precipitation of Fe(Mo,Re)S 4. Consistent with earlier work, U aq profiles are best explained by eddy diffusive transport to the sediment rather than capture by a precipitate in the water column. In Rogoznica pore waters, Mo aq extracted through 0.45 μm pore size filters exceeds by 50-fold concentrations predicted by the model and measured previously with 0.15 μm filters. This observation implies presence of ferrothiomolybdate colloids, which could be important, overlooked participants in the sedimentary geochemistry of Mo. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Multistep physical and biological processing of organic matter in marginal seas modifies its composition, sedimentary pathway, and burial efficiency. This study examines how organic geochemical signals pertaining to the source and transformation in surface sediments are transported and preserved in the conduit portion of source-to-sink sedimentary systems in marginal seas such as the Taiwan Strait (TS). The aim is to gain more insight in not only the total OC burial in this highly dynamic region, but also to establish a quantitative assessment of the provenance and age of this carbon. Our study revealed that terrestrial plant wax n -alkanols represent a portion of terrestrial organic matter, characterized by refractory property and strong mobility leading to efficient transfer from the river mouth to the shelf. Soil bacteria-derived branched glycerol dialkyl glycerol tetraethers (br-GDGTs) represent the portion of terrestrial OM characterized by labile properties and low transmissibility restricted within the river mouth under normal conditions, except for episodic and pulse delivery situations. Sedimentary OC in the TS is typically characterized by a large amount of ancient OC with intensive oxidation, indicated by extremely old 14C ages (<13000 ± 180 yr) and lower petrogenic OC content in marine sediments than that of rocks sourced from the land. Diverse sourced OC supply and accumulation patterns in shallow marine conduit systems mainly influenced by complex physical processes. Quantitative source apportionment of sedimentary OC using a ternary mixing model based on the bulk δ13C and Δ14C proxies combined with sediment mass accumulation rates revealed 0.01–3.44, 0.002–3.79, and 0–3.38 mg C cm−2 yr−1 of marine, terrestrial biospheric, and petrogenic OC burial loadings in the TS. Marine OC burial could only explain 30% of net air–sea CO 2 sequestration in a narrow conduit system such as the TS, which is characterized by high sediment resuspension and strong hydrodynamic processes due to strong tidal currents and wind-driven circulation. In this article, we construct and analyze a second-order time-accurate, linear, decoupled fully-discrete discontinuous Galerkin (DG) pressure-projection numerical scheme for the hydrodynamic and sediment transport model. The proposed algorithm is based on DG method for spatial discretization, Crank-Nicolson (C-N) scheme for temporal discretization, linearly extrapolated scheme for the nonlinear term and coupling term and pressure-projection method for the Navier-Stokes equations. Moreover, we rigorously prove the unconditional stability and optimal error estimates of the proposed fully-discrete scheme. We make use of the techniques developed by Pietro et al. to prove the optimal error estimates for pressure rigorously. Sediments are considered to be refractory materials with limited influences on dissolved iron (dFe) pool in the ocean. However, recent field observations and laboratory experiments suggest that iron released from resuspended sediment particles and transported from continental margins is prone to fertilize large areas of the world ocean. Here we conducted a dissolution experiment to quantify the amount of dFe released from two types of resuspended sediments (silicate and calcite-rich) to open ocean surface seawater under two temperatures (5 and 15 °C). We followed pH, dissolved oxygen (dO 2), phosphate, silicate, dissolved Fe and Mn concentrations (dFe and dMn), and bacterial abundance over 250 days. Extremely low and undetectable phosphate concentrations (<50 pmol kg−1) were measured throughout the duration of the experiment, causing limited bacteria growth and stable pH and dissolved O 2 concentrations under all conditions. Silicate and dFe concentrations increased through time and high temperature (15 °C) induced more iron dissolution from the two sediments than low temperature (5 °C). Temperature had no effect on the dissolution of Mn. Our results further show that Fe and Mn are not released concurrently from the sediment source and that their distribution can be very different. Scavenging of Fe likely caused a decrease of dFe observed during the experiment, which was probably linked to the formation of Mn oxides. We also observed elevated dissolved Fe isotope ratios after dissolution, around +0.16 to +0.27‰. Isotopically heavy Fe was released from sediments to the dissolved pool during the dissolution but no difference in Fe isotope ratios was observed between the two temperature conditions. The Fe isotope fractionation can likely be attributed to ligand complexation and scavenging of Fe. These two mechanisms can be important factors not only in controlling the amount of Fe released from sediments but also in fractionating Fe isotopes at the sediment–seawater boundary. A three-dimensional coupled hydrodynamic and morphodynamic numerical model was developed to analyze sediment dynamics in the Rance estuary, in response to the tidal power station (TPS) built near the mouth in the 1960s. The Rance estuary is a relatively small low-discharge steep-sided ria , located along the Brittany coast in northern France, with a maximum spring tidal range of 13.5m. Taking advantage of this significant tidal regime, the first and currently the second largest operational tidal power station in the world was built at the estuary's mouth, with peak output capacity of 240MW. After calibration and validation of the model for present-day conditions, suspended sediment concentration (SSC) and bed level evolution were evaluated at tidal and fortnightly scales for different scenarios, with and without TPS. Peak SSC are reached during spring tides and specifically during the estuary's infilling (flood) stage where both turbines and sluice gates are open. Unbalanced with sediment transport during ebb, sediments are accumulated in the main channel of the upper estuary. Under natural tidal forcing (i.e., without TPS), simulations show that an estuarine turbidity maximum forms in the upper estuary, and sediment deposition is significant. However, sedimentation rates are two times lower than those observed in the presence of the TPS. A possible alternative for reducing sediment accumulation in the upper estuary would be the opening of sluice gates simultaneously with the turbines during falling tide, to enhance ebb currents that would allow particles transport towards the estuary's downstream. Sheet flow driven by a near-breaking transient wave is numerically investigated using SedFoam, a two-phase Eulerian sediment transport model in the OpenFOAM framework. SedFoam resolves the full profile of sediment transport processes within the bottom boundary layer based on closures for intergranular stresses and fluid–particle interactions. Compared with large-scale wave flume data, good agreements are obtained for streamwise flow velocity profiles, sediment concentration profiles, and the sheet flow layer thickness. Model results show near-bed velocity and sediment profile evolution within the sheet flow layer. Intense sediment suspension trailing the wave crest generates stable density stratification that dampens near-bed turbulent kinetic energy and contributes to decreasing bed shear stress. Results suggest that the buoyant flux dominates turbulent kinetic energy dissipation after the passing of the wave crest, coinciding with the reduction of bed shear stress. The instantaneous upper bound of the sheet flow layer exists in different log-law regimes under the transient wave, giving rise to a near-bed velocity profile that is highly dependent on the variable sheet flow layer wall unit. The effect of the profile shape parameter on bedload sediment transport is studied where the bedload predicted using the time-varying optimal profile shape parameter yields good agreement compared to the directly modeled bedload. Modeled sediment transport rates demonstrate that reduced bed shear stress caused by density stratification limits bedload and results in a suspended load-dominant mode. In this paper, we propose a numerical simulation of two-phase shallow granular flows through a moved bed with a variable irregular topography via a predictor corrector scheme. This method consists of predictor and corrector stages. The predictor stage contains a parameter to control the numerical diffusion that is performed by utilizing limiters and Riemann invariant theory. The corrector stage recovers the balance conservation equation. In the first part, we solve numerically the one-dimensional equation for two-phase shallow granular flows over a fixed bed with irregular topography. In the second part, we consider the model equations for the bed-load sediment transport, the governing model equations consist of two components, specifically, a geophysical flows part and interstitial fluid. • An improved Eulerian method with the movable IBM is employed to study the deformation of the river bed. • A Simultaneous Bed Adjustment Method is proposed to consider the sand sliding on the riverbed in the DNS. • A Segment Plane Method is proposed to calculate the geometrical parameter of the complex riverbed. • The improved Eulerian method can capture both the development of the local scour and the flow structure in detail. An improved Eulerian method with a novel morphologic model is developed based on the direct numerical simulation (DNS) approach to study the local scour. A movable immersed boundary method is proposed to prescribe the geometry of the riverbed. Two techniques, namely the Simultaneous Bed Adjustment Method (SBAM) and (Segment Plane Method) SPM, are proposed to model the complex time changing geometry of the riverbed. The SBAM technique considers sand sliding in the model and the SPM is an algorithm calculating the geometrical parameter of the complex riverbed. A wind tunnel experiment obeying Reynolds similarity and measuring the pressure in a fixed scour hole is carried out to compare with the numerical results. The results show that the movable immersed boundary method performs well in capturing the local scour and qualitatively agrees with the experimental study in how the scour hole develops. The numerical results also show that the DNS can capture the formation of the local scour in details at the beginning and find that the Reynolds stress u'v' plays an important role in an erosion at the leading edge of the cylinder. Sediment samples were collected with a piston sampler (114 samples) and a box core sampler (266 samples) during research cruises on the R/V Tamhae 2 of the Korea Institute of Geoscience and Mineral Resources (KIGAM) from 2015 to 2019, to examine the characteristics of seafloor sediments from the western South Korea Plateau of East Sea. The in situ velocity was measured at four sites using a seafloor acoustic probe developed by KIGAM (KISAP). The samples were analyzed for their physical properties and the resulting data were examined to gain insights into the distribution patterns of the sediments and how the physical properties varied by burial depth. The actual velocity of the seafloor sediments was investigated by comparing the velocities in the laboratory and in situ velocity measurements at four sites. Overall, the physical properties agree well with the expected characteristics of marine sediments but there is considerable variation in the mean grain sizes. The sediment distributions either increases or decreases gradually with depth, reflecting transport from topographically high areas (e.g., possible source and/or shelf areas). The relationships between the physical properties of samples from two transects, one east-west and the other south-north, are different, and reflect the presence of tephra with a low grain density at the specified depth intervals. The laboratory velocity is higher (approximately 20–40 m/s) than the in situ velocity measured by the KISAP because of differences in the temperature (approximately 22 °C) and pressure (∼100 atmospheric pressure). However, the corrected laboratory velocity agrees well with the in situ velocity. Inconsistencies in the data, such as the measurement frequency and condition of each system, measurement interval, and sediment grain size, are probably responsible for some of the variations in the physical property data. The currently available prediction formulas for the scour development around a pile predominantly rely on empirical fittings, lacking clear physical mechanisms. This study integrates the principle of sediment mass conservation, the flat-bed sediment transport model, and the phenomenological theory of turbulence to propose a semi-analytical model for predicting clear-water scour development around circular piles. This model overcomes scale-related issues and is governed by three fundamental parameters: the equilibrium scour depth, the characteristic time, and the ratio of the scour depth coefficient to the primary horseshoe vortex coefficient. The results demonstrate that the proposed model is consistent with experimental data. The proposed model offers significant improvements by addressing two critical issues observed in existing models: (i) empirical formulas expressed purely in mathematical terms exhibit low prediction accuracy for long-term scour, resulting in underestimation of the extrapolated equilibrium scour depth and premature attainment of equilibrium conditions; (ii) other models exhibit a divergence phenomenon, where the extrapolated equilibrium scour depth greatly exceeds the pile diameter, contradicting prevailing understanding. Applying the proposed model allows for a substantial reduction in test duration while accurately capturing the subsequent scour development process. • A semi-analytical model for predicting clear-water scour development around circular piles is proposed by incorporating the phenomenological theory of turbulence. • A comparison of existing empirical and theoretical models reveals significant advantages of the proposed model. • The proposed model is capable of significantly reducing the duration of tests while effectively capturing the subsequent process of scour development. Soil erosion rates after wildfire are strongly controlled by intrinsic properties such as topography, weather, climate, soil, and vegetation. These landscape and hydroclimatic properties are important in determining post-fire erosion rates; however, their influence on post-fire erosion and their interaction with the intensity of a wildfire remains uncertain. A key limitation in resolving this uncertainty is the lack of conceptual models and frameworks for organising data related to the geomorphic sensitivity of landscapes to wildfire. Our aim is to develop a framework for consolidating understanding of post-fire erosion in the context of hydroclimatic conditions which contribute to system states, for example soil and vegetation properties, and wildfire regime. The framework is developed around a simple conceptual model where the change in erosion due to wildfire is a product of change in runoff generation and sediment supply, which is strongly related to landscape net primary productivity (NPP). We hypothesised that geomorphic sensitivity to wildfire should vary as a unimodal humped relationship across a gradient of NPP, peaking at an intermediate level. To develop this framework and to test the hypothesis, we first review intrinsic soil and vegetation properties related to the supply and transport of sediment from burned and unburned hillslopes. Net primary productivity is systematically related to these intrinsic properties because it integrates many processes involved in soil and vegetation development. Empirical data indicate a trend in the change in surface runoff generation with NPP after wildfire, peaking at an NPP of approximately 15 Mg C ha−1 y−1. A simple model of fuel availability and soil heating are correlated with a similar "humped" trend in sediment supply. These results are consistent with our conceptual model, which indicates that sediment supply and runoff contribute towards a distinct peak in wildfire effects on erosion at an intermediate level of NPP. We propose that landscapes of intermediate NPP typically have the highest quantity of fuel available to burn, which cause large changes to the soil surface properties. Landscapes at intermediate NPP also tend to produce intrinsic soil and vegetation properties that promote erosion after wildfire. The interplay between these short and long-term landscape characteristics is strongest at intermediate levels of NPP. Our proposed biogeographic model of geomorphic sensitivity to wildfire was supported by erosion data from burned hillslope and zero-order catchments studies from a range fire-prone landscapes in Australia and North America. We employed idealized numerical experiments using Delft3D to investigate how the interactions of coalescing buoyant river plumes with mangrove vegetation affect sediment transport and deposition in the coastal zone. Our model system, based on the Firth of Thames in the North Island of New Zealand, is designed to represent two mangrove-lined rivers debouching into a coastal bay. Sediment transport patterns into the three adjacent mangrove forest regions (central, western, and eastern) were assessed by quantifying the sediment fluxes over a tidal cycle. The interactions between the buoyant river plumes resulted in a coalesced river plume that flowed along the central mangrove forest between the rivers. The dominant contributors to the total sediment transport into the mangrove forests varied with both the total and the relative flows through the two rivers. When both rivers were forced with their respective flows at the 50th percentile of observed flow, the analysis of sediment transport fluxes along the central forest revealed sediment deposition inside the mangrove forests lining the river mouth nearly four times greater than in the intermediate regions along the central forest; consistent with satellite imagery of the Firth of Thames. Winds of 5 m s−1 modify the overall sediment transport patterns by deflecting the river plume in the direction of the wind. The magnitude of sediment flux is the highest (nearly 80% compared to the no-wind scenario) in the case of an easterly wind scenario as the alongshore transport is enhanced by Coriolis deflection and wind direction aligned with the alongshore flows of the larger plume. • Plume-to-plume interactions result in a coalesced river plume. • Sediment plume bulge of one river inhibits along-shore sediment transport of the other. • The presence of winds altered sediment transport patterns. Dunes form where winds blow over a bed of mobile sediment grains — conditions that are common in our solar system. On Earth, dunes abound in arid continental interiors and along sandy coastlines. Dune fields have also been recognized on Venus, Mars, Saturn's moon Titan, and Pluto. In response to the different boundary conditions and other environmental forcings, dunes adopt a rich diversity of shapes, sizes, and behaviors. Thus, people around the globe and over centuries have developed a rich vocabulary to describe dunes and their complexity. As a result, existing dune nomenclature often includes redundant terms with differing definitions across scientific communities. Previous studies have endeavored to link dune shape to environmental forcing, usually by means of correlation. Although instructive, correlation-based classifications can be misleading if not based on underlying mechanics or if dune morphogenetic classes are not uniquely defined. Here, we synthesize existing dune terminology and use the last two decades of research on dune morphodynamics to propose three complementary dune classification schemes based on: (1) descriptive dune geomorphology, (2) morphodynamic processes, and (3) fluid mechanics and physics of sediment transport. The first classification relates dune types to geomorphic setting, the presence or absence of vegetation or obstacles, and dune shape (including planform shape, and cross-sectional symmetry or asymmetry). Dune classes can be further subdivided where the direction of sand transport is known independently. The second classification relates dune types and shapes to bed properties (sand-covered vs partially starved bed) and wind forcing (directional variability or the relative strengths and directions of wind modes) that together influence dune dynamics (growth, migration, elongation) and select the dominant processes by which dunes are shaped and oriented relative to the resultant transport direction. The third classification relates, for different planetary environments, the range of possible dune sizes, from minimum to maximum wavelength, to fluid flow regime (rough or smooth) and the response of sediment flux, which influence the coupling between sand bed topography, fluid flow, and sediment transport. These characteristic lengths are useful scales for comparative geomorphology. The three classification schemes provide complementary information. Together, they form a unified framework for geomorphologists, sedimentologists, geographers, physicists, and others to describe windblown sand dunes on Earth and beyond through their shape, dynamics, and size as a response to winds and boundary conditions. We present the implementation of a new fully distributed multiclass soil erosion module. The model is based on a 2D finite volume solver (Iber+) for the 2D shallow water equations that computes the overland flow water depths and velocities. From these, the model evaluates the transport of sediment particles due to bed load and suspended load, including rainfall-driven and runoff-driven erosion processes, and using well-established physically-based formulations. The evolution of the mass of sediment particles in the soil layer is computed from a mass conservation equation for each sediment class. The solver is implemented using High Performance Computing techniques that take advantage of the computational capabilities of standard Graphical Processing Units, achieving speed-ups of two orders of magnitude relative to a sequential implementation on the CPU. The formation and evolution of coastal dunes result from a complex interplay of eco-morphodynamic processes. State-of-the-art models can simulate aeolian transports and morphological dune evolution under certain conditions. However, a model combining these processes for coastal engineering applications was not yet available. This study aims to develop a predictive tool for dune development to inform coastal management decisions and interventions. The aeolian sediment transport model AeoLiS is extended with functionalities that allow for simulations of coastal landforms. The added functionalities include the effect of topographic steering on wind shear, avalanching of steep slopes and vegetation processes in the form of growth and wind shear reduction. The model is validated by simulating four distinct coastal landforms; barchan-, parabolic-, embryo dunes and blowouts. Simulations, based on real-world conditions, replicate the landform formation, migration rates and seasonal variability. • Dune shaping processes are implemented into AeoLiS enabling landform simulations. • Four distinct landform types are simulated utilizing AeoLiS. • AeoLiS replicates accurate landform shapes and dynamics under real-world conditions. • Capabilities added to AeoLiS enable its use for a range of engineering applications. The main purpose of the research was to develop appropriate tools for forecasting the effects of storms. The use of the high-resolution SWAN wave model powered by AROME wind fields to couple it with the SWANOneSed sediment transport model and a model using the Ruggiero formula, predicting the extent of the flooded shore, allowed the development of reliable tools for forecasting the effects of storms. Validation using qualitative analysis showed that the results obtained from the coupled SWANOneSed model are characterized by high consistency in intensification and direction of changes. The model using the Ruggiero formula obtained a high value of the correlation coefficient, i.e. 0.970 and 0.992 for the Satbałtyk-Xbeach model data, based on the Hunt&Mase formula, and the high-resolution Pleiades Neo satellite data, respectively. By combining models from the SWAN family, i.e. the SWAN and SWANOneSed wave model and a model using the Ruggiero formula, it was possible to obtain reliable and compatible tools enabling an uninterrupted and synchronized operational process of generating forecasts of storm effects. • A novel model integrating hillslope and in-stream sediment processes is developed. • We quantified the effects of soil-water conservation (SWC) on the Loess Plateau. • SWC contributes to 54.4% and 91.9% of the decline in discharge and sediment load. • Sediment reduction effect of hillslope SWC is more lasting compared to that of check dams. Soil erosion and sediment transport processes, which are intimately connected with hydrological processes, strongly affect land surface morphology and earth system dynamics. Over the past 60 years, intensive Soil-Water Conservation (SWC) measures implemented on the Loess Plateau have significantly reduced sediment load and concurrently exacerbated runoff declines, while the quantitative evaluation of the effects of SWC measures remains challenging. This study develops a sediment module which simulates the hillslope and in-stream sediment processes, and then incorporates the module into a Geomorphology-Based Ecohydrological Model (GBEHM). Besides, the model also couples with an explicit representation of different types of SWC measures, including both Hillslope SWC (HSWC) and River-network SWC (RSWC) measures. The newly developed hydro-sediment model is then applied to the Kuye River basin, a typical river basin on the Loess Plateau, and used for quantifying the effects of SWC measures on river discharge and sediment load during 1982–2019. Compared with Period 1 (1982–2000), the river discharge decreased by 48.7% in Period 2 (2001–2019), while the sediment load experienced a more substantial decrease of 95.3% between the two periods. Based on the numerical experiment results, HSWC and RSWC contributed to 25.4% (58 million m3/yr) and 28.9% (66 million m3/yr) of the annual runoff decline, as well as 58.1% (36 million t/yr) and 33.9% (21 million t/yr) of the annual sediment load reduction between the two periods, respectively. Besides, HSWC plays an increasingly important role in sediment reduction in recent years due to check dam silting. Developing a process-based soil erosion model that comprehensively considers the effects of vegetation is complex but crucial for evaluating sediment reduction during vegetation restoration. Current understanding of the effect of vegetation on sediment reduction along hillslopes across different land uses is limited. In this paper, we developed a dynamic model of hillslope erosion that integrates the effects of vegetation on soil detachability and hydrodynamics (VED) based on the feedback mechanism between soil detachment and sediment transport. The VED was calibrated and validated with runoff plot data for woodland, grassland, and farmland in the Wuding, Yan, Jing and Wei Rivers of the Loess Plateau in China. Unified baseline parameters and decay coefficients of vegetation were obtained. The model validation results indicated that the coefficient of determination, Nash–Sutcliffe simulation efficiency and relative error ranged from 0.59 to 0.99, 0.56 to 0.90, and −45.99 % to 46.36 %, respectively. The decay coefficients for soil detachment capacity (Φ), sediment transport capacity (T c), and the sediment reduction effect of vegetation exhibited the following order: woodland > grassland > farmland. Compared with VED, existing process-based soil erosion models failed to effectively characterize the influence of vegetation on Φ and T c on the Loess Plateau, with differences of several orders of magnitude. The individual contributions of runoff, soil detachability, and hydrodynamics with vegetation impact on sediment yield were quantified by VED. The contribution rates of vegetation to sediment reduction decreased gradually with increasing slope length because the soil detachment capacity of bare slopes exceeded that of vegetated slopes, resulting in a faster increase in sediment yield. The contribution rates of vegetation to sediment reduction for woodland, grassland, and farmland with 20 %–60 % vegetation covers were 66.75 %–99.95 %, 57.43 %–99.63 %, and 27.91 %–88.63 % in the boundary conditions of this study, respectively. The results reveal the potential for integrating VED into other distributed watershed hydrological and sediment models to assess the effects of vegetation restoration on sediment reduction at a watershed scale. Sediment fingerprinting has proven highly efficient and rapid in identifying the sources and hotspots of sediment, thereby facilitating the targeted implementation of control measures. However, the unpredictable effect of particle sorting during sediment transport on source identification has increased the uncertainty associated with this method. Here, laboratory sieving experiments were carried out to simulate particle sorting during sediment transport. The conservatism of the five widely used tracers (geochemical elements, mid-infrared, near-infrared, visible, and color properties) and the accuracy of sediment source fingerprinting were investigated in the process of sorting. The results highlight that selected tracers exhibited high source contribution prediction accuracy (mean MAE 6.6 %) without particle sorting, with the exception of the color tracer. In contrast, the predictive ability of all tracers significantly reduced (mean MAE 16.2 %) in simulated particle sorting groups (especially for 125–31 μm) due to the enrichment of fine particles. Moreover, the correction factor failed to improve the accuracy of source contribution prediction in this study. The uncertainty caused by particle sorting can be effectively resolved by narrowing the source and sediment particle sizes to <63 μm (for all five tracers) or <31 μm (except for color tracer). This study contributes a deeper understanding of the role of particle size in sediment source fingerprinting, providing valuable insights to guide future tracer selection and associated particle size criteria. In this work, we consider biotic and abiotic reactive transport processes through marine sediment vertical profiles. The mathematical model is described by a multicomponent transport and formation of dissolved and solid sediment components with coupled nonlinear reaction terms. We present an efficient decoupled multiscale algorithm based on the implicit–explicit time approximation schemes, operator-splitting techniques, and multiscale finite element method. We start with a finite volume approximation by space on the fully resolved grid (fine grid). We present an implicit–explicit scheme (ImEx) for time approximation to construct the efficient numerical algorithm and localize the coupled nonlinear reaction part. The explicit time approximation is constructed for the slow, non-reactive transport subproblem. The nonlinear reaction part uses the implicit approximation. To overcome a more significant time step restriction induced by an explicit approximation of the diffusive part, we combine Operator Splitting with an implicit–explicit scheme for the non-reactive transport part (OS-ImEx). To reduce the size of the non-reactive transport system, we propose a multiscale lower-dimensional model for the non-reactive transport in marine sediment column. By combining the multiscale method with the Operator splitting scheme and implicit–explicit approximation for the non-reactive part, we obtain an efficient decoupled approach that localizes the nonlinear coupled reaction part and performs a faster solution of the non-reactive transport part. Delta are vital habitats for people and biotic communities. Many of the world's large river deltas are shrinking because of relative sea level rise and intensifying human interventions in the basin. Among these, the Yellow River Delta (hereafter YRD) has been enormously impacted by frequent channel avulsions and a Water-Sediment Regulation Scheme (WSRS) through upstream reservoirs since 2002. However, it remains undisclosed how the YRD responses to these human interventions. Here, modern sedimentation and inter-annual to multi-decadal timescales evolution of the YRD were studied using a dataset including 10 sediment cores collected in the subaqueous delta during the 2014 WSRS, satellite images, hydrographic and bathymetric data from 1976 to 2014. Our results show that the sedimentation of the delta can be divided into three stages: 1976–1995, 1996–2001, and 2002–2014. The area of subaerial delta generally increased from 3884 km2 to 4441 km2 during the whole 1976–2014 period except for a net land loss during 1996–2000. >70% of the delta coastline became artificial after 2000. Bathymetric data reveals that the subaqueous delta was seriously eroded after 1996 due to a shortage of sediment supply, with an estimated 2.3 × 108 t/yr and 1.1 × 108 t/yr of sediment respectively transported to the delta's adjacent sea during 1996–2001 and 2002–2014. The deltaic sediment became coarser due to the impact of the WSRS. Radionuclide 7Be uncovers a rapid sediment accumulation of ∼12 cm at the active delta front during the 2014 WSRS. The evolution of the YRD has become complex under the influence of natural and anthropogenic factors. The YRD thus provides an exemplar shift from natural to human-dominated delta. Understanding sediment transport processes on natural sandy beaches is essential for gaining insights into beach recovery and making effective coastal management decisions. This study examines surfzone sediment transport rates related to beachface morphological variations on an embayed mesotidal sandy beach located on the northwestern coast of the Baja California Peninsula in Mexico. Data were collected during a week-long field experiment conducted in June 2016 under low-to-moderate wave energy conditions (H s = 0.4 − 1.3 m). Daily topographical surveys and continuous measurements of near-bottom suspended sediment fluxes were conducted alongside the application of an extended energetics-based model that accounted for velocity and acceleration skewness. Results reveal contrasting accretionary and erosive patterns in the inner surfzone, along with consistent sediment deposition in the swash zone throughout the study period. Onshore sediment transport is found to be related to short-period calm wave conditions (H s < 0.7 m; T p < 10 s) and a weak undertow (<0.2 ms−1). Alongshore nonuniform wave breaking, influenced by irregular bathymetry and moderate-energetic oblique waves from the northwest, contributes to an alongshore gradient in sediment transport rate, leading to erosion in the northern part of the intertidal beach and accretion in the southern part. Suspended sediment flux measurements at 0.2 m above the bed suggest offshore mean transport predominates over oscillatory transport throughout the field experiment. Nevertheless, this observation should be interpreted with caution, as the flux is not vertically integrated across the water column and does not consider fluid acceleration. The model predictions effectively replicate sediment transport rates and consequent volumetric changes (Accuracy = 55– 63 % ; RMSE = 44–69 m3; Bias = − 2 to −61 m3), although they underestimate observed accretion by a factor of three and overestimate erosion by a factor of two. Overall, this research highlights the complexities of natural sandy beach recovery processes in mesotidal environments and emphasizes the importance of considering both cross-shore and longshore components in sediment transport assessments. Effective coastal management requires an understanding of sediment dynamics. This study examines the distribution of heavy minerals (HMs) in two distinct coastal regions: the mainland and spit, each with unique sediment deposition patterns. The spit accumulates sediment through alongshore sediment transport (AST), while the mainland experiences erosive processes and significant human impacts. The hydrodynamic behaviour and weathering resistance of HMs enables source identification. This has helped to reveal differences between the two regions, with apatite being characteristic of spit sediments and garnet of mainland beaches. Coastal processes, such as erosion, sediment transport, and accumulation, significantly shape the distribution of the HMs, with garnets dominating erosive shores and amphiboles dominating accumulative shores. Furthermore, the study found that human-made coastal infrastructure also affects the composition of HMs and the sediment distribution through AST. This research has implications beyond the local level, providing global insights into the complexities of coastal dynamics. The study emphasises the importance of using HM analysis in conjunction with grain size analysis to understand the distribution of beach sediment composition. An extended three-dimensional unstructured ocean model for simulating impacts of tidal stream turbines on tidal current, turbulence and surface waves has been applied to study the interactions between a tidal turbine farm and its surrounding environment. The present study aims to reveal three-dimensional local and regional changes due to the operation of a proposed turbine farm in natural coastal environment. Fine mesh size is assigned at the turbine farm location to capture the details of local wake dynamics, hydrodynamics and suspended sediment transport. Large geographic coverage of the model provides details of changes in regional features. Results showed that the proposed turbine farm comprised of 18 turbines (15–20 m in diameter) with approximately 20% power extraction from the average available power (averaged over five and half tidal cycles) led to local variation of surface elevation within the range of −10 to 3 mm, flow acceleration on both sides of the turbine farm, flow acceleration of ∼ 0.4 m/s near the bed in the vicinity of the turbine farm which caused bed shear stress to rise up to 2.5 N/m2 (corresponding to the critical stress of a range of fine gravel and finer sediment particles), locally increased TKE of 0.09 m2/s2, reduced wave height of 0.01–0.05 m, and upward sediment transport in the water column. On a regional scale, most of the changes on amplitude and phase of M 2 constituent were observed within 10 km (∼ 15 times the array width) from the centre of the turbine farm, and the wake in terms of 95% flow rate recovery was found to be 9 km long (∼ 14 times the array width). Noticeable changes were also found in surface waves, bed shear stress and suspended sediment transport on regional scale as result of moderation in tidal and flow dynamics, although much less prominent than the local effects. Large wood (LW) and log jams have important implications for sediment dynamics within river systems. Although many case studies explore this topic, far fewer synthesize these results at the reach and basin scales. In this paper, we present a conceptual model that relates valley setting and landscape history of forested, mountain streams to spatiotemporal patterns of sediment storage and transport via the formation and decay processes of logjams. This conceptual model explores the function of logjams as sediment transport moderators, significantly influencing sediment retention, channel morphology, and lateral and longitudinal connectivity. Detailed wood inventories, channel topographic surveys, and channel morphology from four case studies are used to illustrate the range of channel responses to logjam formation, evolution, and decay in different valley contexts. Valley setting is shown to influence logjam formation and dynamics by determining the mechanisms and timing of sediment and wood recruitment. In steep and narrow (and thus coupled, confined) reaches, colluvial processes are the dominant mechanisms of wood and sediment delivery, and logjams grow vertically as sediment is stored in a wedge behind the jam (longitudinal disconnectivity). In contrast, in unconfined reaches (decoupled hillslopes), wood and sediment recruitment occurs primarily through fluvial processes, and logjams grow laterally as the channel shifts across the valley bottom. These logjams have long lifespans, often over a century, and gradually release sediment as the logjam decomposes. Sediment deposits stabilized by riparian vegetation behind these structures may persist long after logjam decay. This study reveals the morphological transformations of a deep-water channel system within the Rakhine Basin in the northeastern Bay of Bengal through a comprehensive analysis of high-resolution 3D seismic data integrated with drilling logs. Employing the "source-channel-sink" paradigm, this investigation examined the impact of various factors, including tectonic transformations, sediment influx, slope dynamics, climatic changes, and relative sea-level fluctuations, on the evolutionary trajectory of these channel systems. Applying precise time-slicing techniques integrating root-mean-square amplitude attributes, coherent amplitude attributes, and horizontal amplitudes on seismic profiles, this investigation recognized three distinct stages in the evolution of channel-levee complexes (CLCs): the Middle Miocene erosional deep-water channel-levee complex (CLC-1), the Pliocene erosional-depositional deep-water channel-levee complex (CLC-2), and the Pleistocene depositional deep-water channel-levee complex (CLC-3). Comparative analysis revealed that the CLC-3 exhibits unique characteristics, including shallower channel depth (D), wider channel width (W C), extensive U-shaped cross-sectional area (S), broader natural levee width (W L) and height (H), and the highest tortuosity coefficient (L C /L S) when contrasted with the other two CLCs. Furthermore, this study substantiated how tectonic processes, primarily the collision between the Indo-Eurasian plates, resulting in the Himalayan and Indo-Burma Range orogenies, have shaped the region's geological and climatic framework, thereby influencing monsoon circulation and precipitation patterns, which in turn augmented detrital material influx into the basin. Moreover, this tectonic collision has led to gradual changes in the slope gradient of the Rakhine Basin and its deep-water areas, impacting internal flow velocities and channel curvature, thus governing deep-water channel systems' development and spatial distribution. Also, episodic sea level fluctuations were identified as significant contributors to sediment transport from shelves to deep-water regions and sediment deposit reworking. Overall, this study underscores the role of tectonic changes after the Eocene in driving the evolutionary dynamics of the deep-water channel system within the Rakhine Basin, Myanmar. Foredunes provide many environmental and ecosystem services including protection from wave erosion and flooding hazards during storm events. While the impact of human interventions on the short-term evolution of coastal dunes is reasonably well understood, less is known about their contemporary influence on current wind and sediment dynamics several decades after implementation. The coastal dunes in Leucate (SE, France) have been anthropogenically constructed and are dominated by offshore wind conditions. Since their construction 20 years ago, a distinct variation in their longshore morphology has developed that is inherited from its original construction. The northern part of the dune has a symmetrical profile with a 28° degree stoss slope, 30° lee slope and a single crest. The southern part is asymmetric, with a gentler stoss slope (12°), 26° lee slope, and a double crest. To explore the potential geomorphic impacts of this distinct difference in morphology, several numerical simulations with varying wind speeds and direction were conducted. We used Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) to explore the spatial variations of the near surface wind flow, shear stress and aeolian sediment transport. show that for each scenario, near surface wind speed accelerated toward the dune crest on the windward slope of the dune. The maximum wind speed varied with incident wind direction, the highest speeds occurring when incident wind flow was perpendicular to the dune crest. The double crest in the southern section of the dune affected the wind flow by inducing two consecutive speeds-up zones, with a greater maximum wind speed than on the single crested dune. Wind flow separation was observed where a steep lee slope was present (single crested dune), and only during perpendicular winds. This suggests that the shape of the dune and the direction of the wind are key parameters rather than wind speed. The area affected by reversed separated flow was spatially limited and did not extend beyond the dune toe but was below the threshold for aeolian sediment transport. Elsewhere in the lee of the dune, the wind was only deflected by an order of 15° for the oblique winds (310 and 330°), and less than 10° for the perpendicular wind (290°) on the southern part. In these locations, the shear velocity exceeded the threshold, notably on the southern dune, which coincided with the formation of undulating aeolian deposits in the lee of vegetation on the dune crest. The spatial differences observed in wind flow and aeolian sediment transport processes on this human-made dune were directly inherited from differences in their construction two decades ago. The swash zone is an important region for the coastal morphodynamics. Often, model studies of the swash zone use depth-averaged models. These models typically assume a vertically uniform velocity and sand concentration for calculating the sand transport flux. However, this assumption is not always accurate in the swash zone. In order to investigate the vertical distribution of velocity and sand, we use a depth-resolving model that is able to capture these vertical variations. We simulate the flow and suspended sediment transport induced by bichromatic waves using a 2DV depth-resolving RANS model. Our verification of the model shows that special care needs to be taken to deal with bubbles in 2DV simulations. Furthermore, we show that turning off the (Wilcox, 2006, 2008) limiter for turbulence, increases the modelled turbulent kinetic energy that is induced by wave-breaking, resulting in improved predictions of sediment concentrations. Using the depth-resolving model, we show that the vertical distribution of velocity and sand is far from uniform in the swash zone. The results show that if one assumes vertically uniform depth-averaged velocities and concentrations, one can overpredict the sediment flux by 50%. • Air bubbles can stay unrealistically long near the bed in 2DV swash simulations. • Bubbles near the bed lead to lower shear stresses and lower sediment pick up. • Increased wave-breaking turbulence leads to increased onshore sand transport. • A model assuming a vertically uniform flux of sand can underpredict the flux by 50%. We synthesize evidence suggesting a chain of global cause-effect relationships, linking population and economic development with cumulative effects on changes in landscape dynamics, including denudation and sediment transport/deposition. Temporal trends in global patterns of geomorphic processes or process combinations such as denudation, sedimentation, or frequency of geomorphic disasters, appear to reflect growing human pressure. Erosion rates, intensified by anthropogenic factors, are currently one to two orders of magnitude greater than prior to the 20th century, and are growing further. Per capita human transfer of Earth materials has increased tenfold. A considerable increase in the frequency of disasters related to geomorphic processes has also taken place in just over half a century, outpacing changes in other natural disasters. It is especially significant that the ratio between the frequency of geomorphic (implying water/land interaction, obviously influenced by climate change) disasters and frequency of purely climate-related disasters has increased more than ten-fold since the early 20th century. The changes described in geomorphic processes (global geomorphic change) appear to respond mainly to land surface modification, which reflects a "Great Geomorphic Acceleration" after the mid-twentieth century. However, these stressors, characteristic of the "Anthropocene", likely interact with climate change, increasing concerns about future implications for Earth surface dynamics and underscoring the need to not only reduce GHG emissions, but also improve land use practices, which modify the conditions of the terrain. Uranium mill tailings (UMT) present a significant environmental concern due to high levels of radioactive and toxic elements, including uranium (U), thorium (Th), and lead (Pb), which can pose serious health risks to aquatic ecosystems. While Pb isotopic tracers have been widely utilized in environmental studies to identify elemental sources and geological processes, their application in U geochemistry remains relatively limited. In this study, we investigate the distribution and migration of U in stream-river sediments surrounding a decommissioned U hydrometallurgical area, employing Pb isotopes as tracers. Our findings reveal significant enrichment and ecological risk of U, Pb, and Th in the sediments. Uranium predominantly associates with quartz and silicate minerals, and its dispersion process is influenced by continuous leaching and precipitation cycles of typical U-bearing minerals. Furthermore, we establish a compelling positive relationship (r 2 = 0.97) between 208Pb/207Pb and 206Pb/207Pb in the stream-river sediments and sediment derived from UMT. Application of a binary Pb mixing model indicates that anthropogenic hydrometallurgical activities contribute to 2.5–62.7% of the stream-river sediments. Notably, these values are lower than the 6.6–89.6% recorded about 10 years ago, prior to the decommissioning of the U hydrometallurgical activity. Our results underscore the continued risk of U pollution dispersion even after decommission, highlighting the long-term environmental impact of UMT. Variability in supply of terrestrial sediments to the coastal zone impacts sediment transport processes and ecological dependencies. This study investigated surface sediment distribution and transportation within a 2020 km2 shallow embayment following a period of flood induced sediment supply. Extensive field sampling of 221 common sites between 2015 and the 2019 follow-up survey presented, identified significant reduction in fine sediment fractions, evident through a 367 km2 decrease in surface mud coverage. Wind-wave sediment transport processes controlled the spatial distribution of fine sediments, exporting 23 million tonnes of mud from the shallow sedimentation zones. In a broader context, sensitive benthic habitats such as seagrass meadows exhibited signs habitat recolonisation coinciding with areas of reduced mud content. • Flume experiments were conducted to assess the impact of submerged flexible vegetation on regular wave attenuation and beach morphology. • The presence of vegetation prevented further erosion of the beach, resulting in a reduction of 7% to 63% in experiments. • The attenuation caused by vegetation results in the wave breaking point being closer to the shoreline on vegetated sand, leading to shoreline retreat. • A dimensionless equation was developed to characterize the behaviour of the cross-shore beach profile under the protection of flexible vegetation. Laboratory flume experiments were conducted to investigate the effect of submerged flexible vegetation on the regular wave attenuation and cross-shore profiles on the artificial plane beach under varying hydraulic conditions. Variations in the waveform, wave spectrum, and wave height were analysed in the vegetation zone. Results show vegetation distorts the waveform and accelerates the attenuation process of the wave energy, and wave height evolution behaves differently from the theoretically obtained attenuation by Mendez and Losada (2004) due to the underestimating vegetation-induced attenuation and neglecting sediment-induced attenuation. Additionally, the formation process of the winter and summer profiles of the vegetated beach was analysed by the screenshots. Regenerated wave breaking becomes more apparent with increasing wave periods. The critical surf similarity parameter of the vegetated beaches was found to be lower than that of a smooth, impermeable slope because of the energy dissipation. Vegetation did not alter the type of the beach profiles, as compared to the final profiles and their characteristic parameters of the unvegetated beaches. Instead, it reduced the erosion depth and brought the eroded area closer to the shoreline. Dimensionless parameters were formulated to characterize the response of the cross-shore beach profile under the shelter of flexible vegetation, and an empirical equation about maximum erosion depth was developed within the scope of the experiment. Chirp profiles collected on the southern Brazilian shelf were combined with sedimentological and hydrodynamic data to characterize shelf geomorphology, focusing on the development of outer shelf bedforms and their genetic links with major oceanic currents. Outer shelf sediment accumulations are interpreted as two scales of bedforms, such as dunes and sand ridges. In the São Paulo Bight, cuspate bedforms are bounded landward by a geomorphological scarp. The sector between Florianopolis and Mostardas also exhibits frequent asymmetric bedforms, whereas the inner- middle shelf is covered by semitransparent sheets. The southern Rio Grande Cone is characterized by stratified deposits covering vast outer shelf areas. Surficial sediment samples reveal a dominantly muddy composition and relatively high carbonate contents. Hydrodynamic data indicate a major influence of the Brazil Current over the São Paulo Bight. The prolific bedform outer-shelf environment is assumed to be mostly relict formed in a transgressive shallow-water setting. The sand ridges are believed to have evolved from a moribund stage characterized by morphological degradation to a relict stage, with preservation enhanced by fine-grained winnowing, coarse sediment armoring, and early cementation. Bedform migration seems to be occurring on the São Paulo Bight due to the presence of a nearly permanent meander of the Brazil Current. Over most of the inner shelf, the northward advection of sediments mainly led by the Brazilian Coastal Current has formed extensive fine-grained deposits. The occurrence of a relict shelf scarp may have conditioned the formation of the outer-shelf bedform environment. The vast spatial distribution of bedforms over most of the outer shelf seems comparable with other shelf areas, such as the south African shelf, dominated by the influence of unidirectional oceanic currents. The Bohai Sea is the receiving basin of the Yellow River (Huanghe), one of the largest contributors of global terrestrial materials to the sea. An area of fine-grained sediment deposition extends northeast of the Yellow River and its formation mechanism is still unclear. A calibrated, high-resolution coupled model of the Bohai and Yellow Seas was used to investigate sediment transport pathways in the region under the influence of strong and varying winds in winter. Numerical results highlight the importance of storm events in modifying the regional sediment resuspension and transport. During winter, the prevailing winds are typically from the northeast and northwest, interspersed by relaxation periods with weak winds. Winds influenced the currents and sediment movement in the Bohai Sea through several processes: local wind waves and resuspension, coastal-trapped waves in the Bohai Sea, and remotely forced coastal-trapped waves in the Yellow Sea. During northwesterly winds, sediment off the Yellow River Delta was mainly transported eastward along the south coast of Bohai Sea and escaped the Bohai Sea through the southern Bohai Strait. When northeasterly winds prevailed, sediment transport split into three branches: westward into the Bohai Bay, northeastward to the central Bohai Sea, and eastward along the south coast of Bohai Sea. Modeling results driven by synoptic winds indicate a more complex sediment transport pattern than previously understood with monthly average wind forcing. Marsh creeks are perceived as important conduits for transporting water and sediment between mudflats and marshes. In order to advance the understanding of the transport mechanisms in creeks, the source and ultimate sink of sediment which moves between mudflats and marshes through creek channels need further investigation. Therefore, two field campaigns were conducted in two intertidal systems with varying sediment availability. The water depth, flow velocity, suspended sediment concentration, and bed level change were measured simultaneously in a marsh creek and on the adjacent mudflat in Chongming Island (China) and in Paulina Saltmarsh (the Netherlands). Paulina Saltmarsh is much smaller, more frequently flooded, and has lower sediment concentration than Chongming. These contrasting conditions allow for a comparison of transport mechanisms and functioning of the creek. Both systems first show that the high suspended sediment concentration (SSC) measured in marsh creeks is mainly the consequence of sediment advection rather than local erosion. In addition, erosion in marsh creeks is usually limited during ebb tides, reducing the export of sediment through these creeks. However, differences have been observed between two systems. The measured SSC was highly asymmetric between flood and ebb tides in Chongming. Large peaks in SSC during the flood period can be observed for most tidal cycles. The marsh creeks in Chongming therefore function as conduits for sediment import. Additionally, there are distinct overbank and underbank tides in Chongming. Sediment was trapped and retained in creeks during underbank tides, which can then be eroded and transported to the marsh during subsequent overbank tides. We also observed that mudflats in Chongming quickly recovered after erosion. These mechanisms have not been observed in Paulina Saltmarsh, where net sediment export via the marsh creek was observed due to a lack of abundant sediment in suspension during flood tides. Furthermore, the remaining bed surface of mudflats after an erosion event was stronger than before, limiting further erosion in Paulina Saltmarsh. The Holocene sedimentary history of the Turbio River valley in semi-arid north-central Chile and its relationship to climate variability is presented in this study. Fluvial landforms and sedimentary deposits serve as essential records for studying the long-term dynamics of fluvial systems in response to external factors such as tectonic and climatic influences. The study area, located in the Andean Mountain range, is highly sensitive to hydrodynamic changes and sediment transport processes, making it suitable for studying fluvial dynamics and their relationship to climate fluctuations over millennia. In particular, the transitional semi-arid conditions of this region provide an opportunity to link Holocene fluvial sediments to climatic shifts. This study presents the analysis of well-preserved sedimentary deposits that outcrop along the valley walls, including grain-size distribution, stratigraphy, geochemical composition and radiocarbon dating to establish the chronological context. Facies association analysis, along with geochemical data, allowed the interpretation of depositional sub-environments and their evolution through time. We interpret the Holocene sedimentary evolution for the Turbio River valley as six time periods that reflect shifts in sediment source, energy regime, flow types, and sedimentary processes linked to fluctuations between wet and dry climatic conditions. The sedimentary sequence is interpreted as reflecting an initial high-energy period with continuous surface runoff followed by two periods of formation of extensive lakes, likely separated by periods of runoff intensification. The later part of the sequence reflects a more stable fluvial landscape that led to the excavation of the sedimentary fill. This sedimentary record provides valuable insights into past climate variations and their impact on the hydrodynamic conditions of the fluvial system in the region. Floodplains are really important for the environment as they provide various functions for waterways, including ecological, hydrological, and geomorphic ones. During overbank flows, there are complex hydrodynamic conditions that occur as water interacts with the rough floodplain vegetation and drag forces due to the vegetation that changes the flow pattern. However, we still don't fully understand how floodplain vegetation influences channel-altering hydrodynamic forces and sediment transport. To address this, we conducted flume experiments and measured flow pattern and sediment transport under varied floodplain geometry and rigid and flexible conditions. For this purpose, a physical model was constructed in the laboratory, in which plastic rods with a diameter of 10 mm will be used as trees, and artificial grass will be grass vegetation. Thus, 36 experiments were conducted in which the sedimentation and hydraulic parameters of the flow were calculated by measuring the flow velocity, water surface, and sediment transport rate. The results show that in the floodplain with dense (rigid and flexible) vegetation, the friction coefficient (f) is even 1.5 times higher than in the floodplain without vegetation. The parameters such as flow velocity, bed shear stress and Darcy Weissbach friction coefficient increase in the vertical plane between the main channel and floodplains due to the difference in roughness between the main channel and floodplains. In addition, in the main channel, the flow resistance is almost constant and does not depend on the vegetation density. The Darcy-Weissbach friction coefficient is greatly increased in the presence of grass and tree vegetation on the floodplain, and the larger contribution of f is due to the grass vegetation. The results also showed the sediment transport rate has a direct relationship with the angle of divergence and density of vegetation and an inverse relationship with the relative depth of the flow. Therefore, as the sediment transport rate decreases in the diverging compound channel, the wavelength and height of the dunes increase. At smaller divergence angles, the dunes tend to the top of the zero line (the level of the sediments before the formation of the bed form). In the presence of vegetation, due to the increase in the roughness ratio of the floodplain to the main channel, the contribution of the main channel to the flow rate increases. Atolls in the South China Sea comprise 15% of the world's total in area. In contrast to most reef flats in the Indo-Pacific region, which typically develop up to contemporary sea level, a significant portion of their reef flats in the South China Sea are inundated at depths of 5–20 m. To gain insights into modern processes and determine whether these subtidal reef flats are actively shaped by hydrodynamics, we carried out an in situ observation on a 12 m-deep southwest-facing reef flat over a period of 8 months. The measurements revealed a prevalence of seasonally varying waves and stable tidal currents. While the reef flat remained sheltered from the northeast monsoon (January–May), the southwest monsoon (June–September) led to prolonged reef exposure to substantial waves (mean significant wave height of 1.3 m, with an orbital velocity of 0.22 m/s on average). Such an exposure resulted in the formation of mobile bed ripples and entrainment of coarse-grained coral sands. Estimates of potential bedload transport rate indicated that the combined action of waves and currents caused material loss from the reef flat, with movement into the lagoon or down the fore-reef slope of the atoll. This sediment loss was equivalent to reef bed erosion of up to 28 mm during the observation period. As these potential losses may be compensated by coral reef growth, our measurements implied that modern sediment budgeting has played a significant role in the maintenance of subtidal reef flats, in terms of bed elevation. Hence, the deep reef flat does not necessarily belong to the previously identified give-up pattern; a balance of coral sediment supply and transport-induced loss may result in an equilibrium morphology, or a "lock-up" pattern. • Combination of wave orbital motions and oceanic currents resulted in substantial shear stresses. • Sediment on the reef flat was mobile for over 75% of the 8-month observation period. • The morphology of the subtidal reef flat was maintained by modern processes. • On the global scale, there are "lock-up" atolls, in addition to keep-up, catch-up and give-up ones. During extreme conditions, the transport of the wave-averaged suspended sediment concentrations in the inner surf zone affects dune erosion. Although large-scale laboratory experiments have provided insight in what drives these sediment concentrations, corresponding field data are lacking. To fill this gap, novel field observations of suspended sediment concentrations are compared to drivers that govern sediment suspension during storm conditions known from literature. A total of 128 time intervals of 20 min are analysed, spread over 10 different high water events with different hydrodynamic conditions. For each time interval, the wave-averaged (i.e. 20 min mean) suspended sediment concentration is computed and compared to three suspension drivers. The studied drivers are (1) bed shear due to near bed velocities that originate from mean currents in combination with wave-induced orbital flow, (2) the horizontal pressure gradients under steep wave fronts that increase the forces on the bed material, and (3) bore-induced turbulence that is generated at the free surface and reaches the bed. The derived bore-induced turbulence generates the greatest correlation with the mean suspended sediment concentrations (r = 0.74, p = 4.47E-23). Samples that deviate from this correlation correspond to time intervals with lower values of derived bore turbulence, less wave energy saturation in the inner surf zone, and stronger mean currents. The correlation with the mean suspended sediment concentrations increases when the shear stress originating from mean currents is used for these time intervals (r = 0.83, p = 1.63E-33). For time intervals during which more energetic conditions persist and the wave energy is saturated in the nearshore, bore turbulence was the dominant mechanism in stirring up sediment. Based on the interactions between vegetation and hydrological processes, the dynamics of marsh-edge scarp movement were also captured with a high match degree by using the coupled model. The model coupling biotic and abiotic processes revealed the simulation superiority in the spatiotemporal heterogeneity of tidal marsh biogeomorphology with high vegetation and hydro-sedimentary dynamics. • A novel framework for prediction and early-warning of bank erosion is proposed. • The proposed framework captures major bank erosion sites in the MYR. • A model ensemble is better to improve the accuracy of bank erosion prediction. Bank erosion can cause serious damage to flood control infrastructures in alluvial rivers, and thus threaten the safety of riparian residents and industry in heavily populated river systems, such as the Middle Yangtze River (MYR), China. The current study proposes a novel framework for the prediction and early-warning of bank erosion. The prediction of bank erosion is implemented by coupling a dynamic model with a data-driven random forest model. To determine the early-warning level, four indices are proposed corresponding to bank erosion intensity and dangerous degree, respectively. These indices are combined into a final early-warning level of bank erosion. The proposed framework is applied to the MYR, with its performance being evaluated by the corresponding flow, sediment, and topographic measurements. The results show that: (1) the dynamic model reproduces the flow and sediment transport process well in the MYR, with relative errors being less than 6%, 33%, and 4% for the water discharge, sediment discharge, and river stage, respectively. The model is also able to capture the major bank erosion sites well; (2) The performance of the data-driven model is increased when the input data groups are balanced, with a recall rate of 0.67 and an precision of 0.80 being obtained; (3) the calculated distributions of early-warning sites are generally in accordance with the observations in 2020, and the dangerous areas locate close to the outlet of the Jingjiang Reach of MYR. Besides, a model ensemble is probably a better way to improve the prediction of bank erosion, as compared with solely relying on the refinement of a dynamic model. Concentrated Solar Power (CSP) plants are typically located in gravelly desert (Gobi) regions because of their level, steady land, and abundant sunlight. The Gobi region has many sand sources, and strong winds accelerate aeolian processes, leading to windblown sand and dust at CSP sites. Large-scale CSP plant heliostats and central building clusters affect Gobi surface aerodynamic roughness and flow field characteristics, leading to a distinct aeolian transportation mechanism compared with that of a natural Gobi surface. Field observations from the 100 MW large-scale Gobi central-tower CSP facility in Dunhuang, China, were used to study a typical aeolian transportation event to gain insight into windblown sand and dust movement in CSP plants. The plant experienced a 36 % reduction in wind friction velocity owing to the increased aerodynamic roughness compared to that in the external environment. The facility reduces the minimum wind friction velocity for sand particle initiation to 0.37 m s−1, which is 30 % lower than that over the typical Gobi surfaces, however, sand accumulation between the heliostats resulted in a 1.8 times higher sediment transport quantity than that transported externally. The blown sand mean saltation layer height in the plant was 0.09 m, similar to that of a sandy desert. The plant surface emits dust, causing PM10 levels to increase to 20,000 μg m−3. The occurrence of extreme rainfall events over mountain catchments is likely to trigger mass failure processes on hillslopes and sediment transport within the channel network. Understanding the degree of linkage between the sediment sources and transfer pathways downstream is essential in those catchments where settlements are affected by hydro-geomorphic processes, in order to plan suitable interventions for risk mitigation. A recent storm (October 2020) named "Alex", estimated to be an extratropical cyclone with a more than 100-year return period, hit the Mediterranean Alps at the border between Italy and France, triggering deadly landslides and flooding processes. This work focuses on two adjacent mountain catchments located in the Liguria region (Italy) which share the same outlet, where a small village was damaged by high-magnitude sediment transport and deposition processes during the storm. In order to analyze sediment dynamics at the catchment scale leading to severe damage to the urban settlements at the outlet, an integrated approach was used. Very high resolution (0.5 m) satellite imagery was employed to map the mass failure processes on the hillslopes with a visual interpretation. This dataset was then compared with a map of the Index of Connectivity created using the SedInConnect 2.3 software to characterize the pre-event structural connectivity in both catchments. The integration of these two datasets permitted understanding that debris slides evolving into debris flows downstream supplied most of the sediments to the channel network. These processes concentrated mainly in a specific catchment where hillslopes have the highest connectivity with the valley bottom. This outcome provided a clear evidence that inventory maps developed soon after an extreme event, coupled with sediment connectivity datasets, can provide relevant information for future land management and risk mitigation strategies. Energetic tidal current in the study area results in a significant amount of sediment being eroded into the water during spring tides, causing the resuspension age to consistently remain lower during spring tides compared to neap tides. Spatially, consistently low resuspension ages occur in the North Branch and turbidity maximum because suspended sediment in these areas primarily originates from local erosion. While advective sediment dominates in the HZB, leading to highest resuspension age there. During the wet season, the South Branch experiences an average resuspension age surpassing 10 days, primarily due to particles predominantly transported from the river. Sediments deposited on the seabed during the wet season become the primary source of suspended sediment after being eroded into the water column during the dry season, leading to a reduction in resuspension age. Likewise, the decrease in resuspension age in the Subei Coast during the dry season is closely associated with the appearance of sediment mass advected by the northern branch plume. When stratification occurs, the upward diffusion of sediment is impeded, constraining newly eroded sediment close to the bed. Some of the most disruptive effects of climate change are projected to be felt along the coastlines. The combined effects of future changes in water levels and wave climate along coastal areas constitute one of the most serious threats to their sustainable evolution, compromising critical infrastructures, resources, ecosystems, and communities. Understanding long-term changes in coastal areas remains challenging, however, due to their multivariate and multi-time-and-space-scale nature. In this study, we propose an innovative methodology for a complete vulnerability assessment of sandy low-lying coastal areas, based on dynamic, ensemble-based projections from the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project phase 5 (CMIP5). In the current Part I study, the effects of sea level rise (SLR) and nearshore wave climate changes on future shoreline evolution are assessed at five key-locations along the Portuguese coastline. Longshore sediment transport (LST) projections are computed, and sedimentary imbalances are quantified. Overall, robust shoreline retreat of up to 300 m is projected, especially along the Portuguese northern and central coastal areas, with continued erosion driven mainly by sediment imbalance and SLR. The projected decrease in future nearshore wave energy is responsible for a slight alleviation in erosion trends, up to 6.33%, whereas the increase of northerly incoming waves is expected to lead to northward beach rotations along western Mainland Portugal. The resulting shoreline evolution, responsible for the loss of up to 0.786 km2 of dry land by 2100 along the 14 km of analysed coastline, is projected to threaten several Portuguese urban areas, calling for the implementation of adequate coastal management and adaptation plans, to reduce the impacts of climate change on population, infrastructures, livelihood, and ecosystems. • An innovative methodology for a coastal vulnerability assessment is proposed. • Impact of SLR and wave climate changes on future shoreline evolution are assessed. • Robust shoreline retreat up to 300 m is projected along the Portuguese coastlines. • Shoreline evolution is responsible for loss of up to 0.786 km2 of dry land by 2100. The morphodynamics of inlets and ebb-tidal deltas often exhibit cyclic behaviour, controlled by wave-tide interactions and the influence of these on sediment-bypassing processes. Variation in the form and timing of inlet dynamics can occur in response to changes in the key sediment transport processes and sediment supply, and particularly the relative dominance of differential wave direction driving alongshore sediment transport. This paper investigates the morphodynamics of the Deben ebb-tidal delta through multivariate analysis of multi-annual bathymetry and metocean parameters covering the period 1991 to 2023. Results show that sediment bypassing and associated morphological change in this ebb-tidal delta follows variable behaviour mid-cycle, leading to change in the morphology and configuration of the ebb-delta from cycle to cycle. In the most recent cycle (since 2003), delta volume followed a stepwise growth driven by sediment influx periods, evident primarily in the updrift shoal, followed by cross-shore redistribution. Interannual variability in wave climate was clustered into four groups that capture the relative balance between the dominant NE and SW forcing. Sediment influx periods are mostly associated with subdued SW and increased NE forcing, but the summer and winter NE wave climate play different roles on the up- and downdrift, and upper and lower components of the ebb-delta system. Tide level has increased in the last 33 years, which is strongly correlated with ebb-delta volume increase. Wave and tide conditions have discrete and independent effects on the ebb-tidal delta, whereas wave-tide interactions do not significantly change these underlying influences. • Differential within-cycle behaviour was found in multidecadal bypassing cycles. • Ebb-tidal delta volume has increased via a stepwise growth. • Sediment influx is related to reduced SW and increased NE wave forcing. • Wave and tide conditions have independent effects on the ebb-tidal delta. Submarine canyons are primary conduits for turbidity currents transporting terrestrial sediments, nutrients, pollutants and organic carbon to the deep sea. The concavity in the longitudinal profile of these canyons (i.e. the downstream flattening rate along the profiles) influences the transport processes and results in variations in turbidite thickness, impacting the transfer and burial of particles. To better understand the controlling mechanisms of canyon concavity on the distribution of turbidite deposits, here we investigate the variation in sediment accumulation as a function of canyon concavity of 20 different modern submarine canyons, distributed on global continental margins. In order to effectively assess the isolated impact of the concavity of 20 different canyons, a series of two-dimensional, depth-resolved numerical simulations are conducted. Simulation results show that the highly concave profile (e.g. Surveyor and Horizon) tends to concentrate the turbidite deposits mainly at the slope break, while nearly straight profiles (e.g. Amazon and Congo) result in deposition focused at the canyon head. Moderately concave profiles with a smoother canyon floor (e.g. Norfolk-Washington and Mukluk) effectively facilitate the downstream transport of suspended sediments in turbidity currents. Furthermore, smooth and steep upper reaches of canyons commonly contribute to sediment bypass (i.e. Mukluk and Chirikof), while low slope angles lead to deposition at upper reaches (i.e. Bounty and Valencia). At lower reaches, the distribution of turbidite deposits is consistent with the occurrence of hydraulic jumps. Under the influence of different canyon concavities, three types of deposition patterns are inferred in this study, and verified by comparison with observed turbidite deposits on the modern or paleo-canyon floor.
