Despite the many contributions of nonhuman animals in history, nonhuman animal representations are seldom crafted with care and accuracy in curricular texts. Because of the anthropocentric vantage point of textbook creation, the nonhuman animal is often portrayed as an object, but as our relationship with the nonhuman world continues to deteriorate, we need now more than ever to consider the agency and subjectivity of nonhuman entities across time and space. In this article, I will use critical contextual analysis as a research method to examine the representation of the horse in a commonly used textbook in middle and high schools in the United States titled World History: Patterns of Interaction to raise larger questions about how to engage with nonhuman animal presence in history with students. Using critical animal studies as a theoretical framework to illuminate the data, the findings reveal that the horse is depicted as agentless and is shown merely as a means for human animals to expand empire and perpetuate social norms. The exploration identifies a gap in the social studies scholarship that neglects the historical contributions of nonhuman animals in curriculum. This article will argue that juxtaposing anthropocentric curricular texts such as the one under investigation with narratives that illuminate nonhuman animal subjectivity is essential for building a more empathetic world and for cultivating a more inclusive historical narrative. The Covid-19 pandemic and Black Lives Matter protests have given renewed impetus to campaigns against racial inequality. In education, the issue of curriculum – and particularly the history curriculum – has been at the centre of campaigns to "decolonise the curriculum". While barriers to the teaching of "diverse" British histories in England's classrooms have long been recognised, relatively little research has been done on the crucial role of history teacher educators and teacher training in developing a diverse profession, practice, and curriculum. This paper seeks to address these gaps through analysis of interviews with history teacher educators, trainee history teachers and key stakeholders. In particular, it explores the responses of history teacher educators to recent calls for curriculum reform, charts how these demands for change have influenced thinking and practice in Initial Teacher Education (ITE) in history and identifies ongoing challenges to the development of more inclusive curriculum and pedagogic practice. History education that deals with the controversial and sensitive past is a vehicle for peacemaking in conflict‐affected societies. However, its success is dependent on teachers taking risks to challenge entrenched 'us versus them' views of history. How does a student teacher in Northern Ireland grapple with risk‐taking when learning to teach controversial history? What tensions are involved in bringing a different perspective into the classroom that challenges identity‐based understandings and emotions? This paper analyses interview data from a study on the preparation of preservice teachers for teaching controversial issues. It uses dialogical self theory to examine competing voices that animate a student teacher's practice and reveal how her interpretation of pedagogical lessons from university coursework and professional norms bump up against her identity, family loyalty and related emotions. AbstractEmotions and feelings play an important role within history education. Yet, the affective dimensions (feelings, emotions, connections) of learning about the past are understudied within research on historical empathy—defined here as a cognitive-affective process of attempting to understand the thoughts, feelings, experiences, decisions, and actions of people from the past within their historical contexts. Drawing from interviews with secondary school history teachers in Canada, this article offers insight into teachers’ perspectives on constructive ways that they approach the affective dimensions within history classrooms, as well as problems and challenges that arise when they intentionally elicit emotions or encounter them unexpectedly. In doing so, the article aims to further conceptualize the affective dimensions of historical empathy and expand understandings of emotions in history and social studies education, while positioning these discussions in relation to history education in Canada. The author examines the portrayal of former U.S. President George Washington in children's biographies using critical multicultural analysis and a justice-oriented approach to teaching history. Topics discussed include the selection of books for the study, facts about Washington's will to free his enslaved people, the use of glossary terms in nonfiction books for young readers, and the choices on layout made by the biography books as an exercise of power over civic discourse.

Situating NYC's Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) history curriculum initiative as part of the nationwide movement for K-12 ethnic studies, this article aims to explore perspectives and experiences of six Asian American and migrant elementary teachers regarding the new AAPI history curriculum initiative in NYC. Teachers' stories, critiques, and proposals for change focused on (1) enhancing teacher education in ethnic studies pedagogy and curriculum; (2) inclusive and community-led process of ethnic studies curriculum development; (3) utilizing multimodal and local community-relevant resources; and (4) centering ethnic communities' resistance and agency as well as power and oppression in the curriculum. By delving into the teachers' experiences, hopes, and insights regarding the AAPI history curriculum implementation, this article adds to the literature on the current and future praxis of ethnic studies in K-12 education and teacher education. Learning history is vital for students' intellectual, spiritual, emotional, and physical development. Students perceive history subject as difficult and boring because they must memorize facts and understandthose facts, concepts, time, and historical events. Interactive multimedia can increase students' enthusiasm and make the teaching and learning process more interesting to make the history "alive." Game-based learning uses game elements and principles to effectively deliver teaching and learning process in the classrooms. Yamashita's Treasure: A Quest to Find the Treasure is a game-based instructional material designed for grade 7 students of the Philippine K-12 curriculum that aims to teach significant lessons and events occurred in the Philippines over the last century. In this paper, we present findings from an assessment of an instructional material in teaching Philippine history. A System Usability Scale (SUS) was used to test the system's usability which generated a positive score. Respondents were highly satisfied with the game's usability scoring 87.5 on the SUS. This study explores how Hong Kong’s latest Chinese history curriculum hybridizes Romantic and Enlightened approaches and how that hybridization converges with/diverges from mainland China’s, given the two societies’ increased integration in the People’s Republic of China. Data were drawn from Hong Kong’s and mainland China’s latest junior-secondary Chinese history curricula policies and textbooks and Hong Kong’s earlier curriculum. Despite approaching mainland China’s Chinese history in curriculum structure and promoting China as a unified multi-ethnic nation, Hong Kong’s latest history curriculum retains its earlier orientation towards the Communist Party of China and the Enlightened approach. Hong Kong’s junior-secondary Chinese history curricula try to balance Romantic and Enlightened approaches, while mainland China’s symbolically promotes and selectively uses the latter to serve the former. "Digital Thrace: Mapping the History and Culture to Enhance the Tourist Economy" is a three-year (2021–2023) research project conducted by the Democritus University of Thrace. "Thrace," a geographical rather than a regional or political designation, is divided into three nation-states (Greece, Bulgaria, and Turkey). Despite historical nationalist conflicts and ethnic stereotypes, Thrace maintains its multicultural character. This article shows that the Digital Thrace Project not only generates research but also transforms it into knowledge and cultural experiences for visitors. It bridges the gap between academic historiography and cultural studies on one side and the public space on the other. This multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary project employs cutting-edge technologies to provide two main components to its users: a digital platform primarily aimed at researchers and educators, and a digital tour application for the general public. Special attention is devoted to the project's pedagogical section. Based on the principles and methodologies of intercultural and democratic education, over 30 educational projects have been designed for primary and secondary school classes. Stephen Jackson, the 2023 AHA Eugene Asher Distinguished Teaching Award winner, traces the controversial rise and uses of state history standards for K-12 education and offers teachers a flexible lesson plan that encourages them to draw upon the standards in their own state to help students better understand the complexities of how local constructions of official knowledge are formulated. Jackson provides a quick history of the rise of state history standards in the American context beginning in the 1970s and 1980s; an ensemble of discussion questions about what history standards include, what they leave out, and how they balance critical thinking and content coverage; and a writing assignment that asks students to identify and revise what they see as a problematic single history standard. This article explores how recent curricular reform in Australia has been responsive to a culture of redress. It argues that taken together, the 2008 National Apology to the Stolen Generations and the 2010 national curriculum reform marked a turning point, whereby settler colonial injustices have since been systematically included in the curriculum. This is explored through a case study analysis of the two iterations of the Victorian Curriculum: History post-Apology— 2012 and 2016—the latter of which remains in current use. Using discourse analysis methods, this article argues that the inclusion of colonial injustice in the post-Apology era signals a consensus that has emerged around the significance of representing injustice in history curriculum, and by extension, for shaping future citizens. Through close textual analysis of the curriculum documents, this article finds that representations of historical injustice have been organized by four frames: memorialization, equivalence, personalization, and human rights. It argues that these frames curtail opportunities for the development of an understanding of the structural character and effects of settler colonialism, and limit consideration of the longer history of Indigenous sovereignty and self-determination. These failures raise questions about how impending reforms might respond to the contemporary political context where treaty negotiations and formal truth-telling with First Nations' polities are unfolding. National canons of history sparked intense debate among historians over the last years, history educators have regularly shown concerns regarding these canons. The main arguments are that history is instrumentalized for political purposes, and that canons are incompatible with multiculturality. In this study, the cases of the Netherlands and Belgium (Flanders) are used to discuss these concerns. The aim of this article is to gain a more complex understanding of the use of canonical discourse in the setting of history education. The current study actualizes and reconsiders Banks' typologies of knowledge, and applies them to multicultural history education. Hence, the canon debates in the low countries are contextualized from an international perspective of debates on canon and history teaching. It is argued that both national canons specifically intend to confront popular knowledges and historical myths with academic historiographic discourses. More particularly both canons seek to include discourses on minority groups and multiculturality, which may benefit the use of transformative knowledge in history education. The use of canonical discourses however must not be reduced to transmission. Beside qualification history education also strives towards socialization and subjectivation. In the study presented in this article, the aim is to further the understanding regarding the differences between pupils (aged 15–16) from schools with low or high socio‐economic status (SES), regarding the amount and diversity of content knowledge in history that they have acquired by the end of compulsory schooling. Following a definition of historical content knowledge, we situate the concept in relation to other aspects of the history school subject. This is done to visualize historical content knowledge's central role in more complex aspects of the subject. The empirical material used in the study is pupils' responses on both selected and constructed response items on the Swedish national test in history. In the study, a combination of qualitative and quantitative approaches is used. The results show not only that pupils in low‐SES schools provide fewer examples of historical content knowledge. We can also establish that the historical content knowledge of pupils from high‐SES schools represents several perspectives while there are few perspectives present in the responses from pupils in low‐SES schools. The results are used to discuss how the differences between pupils in low‐ and high‐SES schools may affect their possibilities for educational success and active participation in society. A growing body of research has underscored the importance of inquiry-based methods in history teaching, yet the organisational and cultural contexts within which teachers work and how these impact teachers' practices have received little attention. This article employs the job demands-resources theory to examine factors that inform the classroom methods of secondary history teachers in Ghana. A qualitative approach involving in-depth interviews and lesson observations was used to explore this issue. Results show that teachers in Ghana report high levels of workload that are disproportionate to the resources available in their schools of practice. This resulted in pressure and anxiety to achieve curriculum coverage in response to testing and accountability regimes. The article concludes that tensions between job demands and resources form a disincentive against the implementation of inquiry-based pedagogies in Ghanaian schools. The article explores an experiential learning approach for undergraduate and graduate students through a potions lesson experiment, which is part of the history course offering Secrets of Nature in the Iberian World. Topics discussed include students' creation of ink using recipes from herbal notes and manuscripts, the study of Iberian bookmaking traditions, and the preparation and execution of the experiment.

The article discusses the benefits of including more hands-on experimental archaeological projects into history college curriculum. These benefits include facilitating deeper transformative student learning, providing opportunities for interdisciplinary and community connections, and reinforcing teaching of historiography. Other benefits include expanding student experiences and providing photo opportunities.

In recent decades, history and education scholars in the Western world have argued for a constructivist approach to disciplinary thinking in the teaching and learning of History, known as historical thinking. Yet, there has been little classroom-based empirical research exploring how teachers engage with historical thinking theory, enact related practices in the classroom, and, in Canada, utilize historical thinking concepts. The multiple-case study outlined here addresses this gap, by offering descriptive details and insights regarding four Canadian secondary school teachers’ attitudes, understandings, implementation, and applications of historical thinking in lessons and assessments. Differences among these teachers’ perceptions and practices indicate that historical thinking is not a singular pedagogical approach. Yet, common elements revealed two broadly drawn typologies that may serve as inspiration and provide concrete examples for history teachers wishing to develop their own historical thinking practices. Rich descriptions also provide unique insights into how the teachers use their judgment and knowledge in the choices and decisions they make to move theory to practice. Understanding local history is fundamental to fostering a comprehensive global viewpoint. As technological advances shape our pedagogical tools, Virtual Reality (VR) stands out for its potential educational impact. Though its promise in educational settings is widely acknowledged, especially in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields, there is a noticeable decrease in research exploring VR's efficacy in arts. The present study examines the effects of VR-mediated interventions on cultural education. In greater detail, secondary school adolescents (N = 52) embarked on a journey into local history through an immersive 360° VR experience. As part of our research approach, we conducted pre- and post-intervention assessments to gauge participants' grasp of the content and further distributed psychometric instruments to evaluate their reception of VR as an instructional approach. The analysis indicates that VR's immersive elements enhance knowledge acquisition but the impact is modulated by the complexity of the subject matter. Additionally, the study reveals that a tailored, context-sensitive, instructional design is paramount for optimising learning outcomes and mitigating educational inequities. This work challenges the "one-size-fits-all" approach to educational VR, advocating for a more targeted instructional approach. History is a subject that students often find uninspiring in school education. This paper explores the application of social VR metaverse platforms in combination with interactive, nonlinear web platforms designed for immersive storytelling to support learning about a sensitive historical event, namely the Asia Minor Catastrophe. The goal was to design an alternative method of learning history and investigate if it would engage students and foster their independence. A mixed-methods research design was applied. Thirty-four (n = 34) adult participants engaged in the interactive book and VR space over the course of three weeks. After an online workshop, feedback was collected from participants through a custom questionnaire. The quantitative data from the questionnaire were analyzed statistically utilizing IBM SPSS, while the qualitative responses were coded thematically. This study reveals that these two tools can enhance historical education by increasing student engagement, interaction, and understanding. Participants appreciated the immersive and participatory nature of the material. History curricula are shaped by factors such as historiography, pedagogical ideals, political goals, international initiatives, and broader societal conditions and processes. This article examines ideas about purposes, content, and methods, of history education, in history curricula that were used in Swedish and Norwegian theoretical upper secondary schools between 1920 and 1960. These schools aimed at preparing students for university studies and providing general education (Bildung). While having close connections to academic disciplines, these schools were also influenced by political goals of democratization and ideas of progressive pedagogy. There are tensions in the curricula between material aspects of Bildung, focusing on content, and formal aspects of Bildung, focusing on students' development. Although material aspects remain essential, formal aspects are increasingly emphasized through individual projects, student interaction, more active use of historical sources, and, in the latest Swedish documents, critical thinking. Limitations of progressive methods are also acknowledged. The Norwegian and Swedish curricula differ in attitudes to nationalism and the state. These differences can be explained by different starting points for nation-building and differences between Norwegian and Swedish historiography. There is a more dramatic shift in the Norwegian curricula, from a highly teacher/material-centred approach, to an ideal of active and independent students. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

According to the verses of the Noble Qur'an, the people of Aad were strong and large, who lived a good and prosperous life and used their power for oppression and oppression, and lived in ignorance, they did not believe in the teachings of Hazrat Hud, their prophet, and adopted idol worship. The Ad people did not believe in any of the beliefs and principles of religion. Prior research on classroom interaction has investigated how the teacher's feedback turn following students' responses can be used to transform students' turns into academic expressions during whole class discussions. Nevertheless, more empirical studies are needed to explore how teachers' translanguaging practices can play a role in shaping students' contributions into pedagogical opportunities for introducing academic terminologies in English-Medium-Instruction (EMI) classrooms. Adopting translanguaging as an analytical perspective, this study explores how an EMI history teacher deploys available linguistic and multimodal resources to connect students' responses with academic concepts and terminologies. The study draws its data from a larger linguistic ethnographic project that took place in an EMI secondary history classroom in Hong Kong. The classroom interaction data is examined using Multimodal Conversation Analysis, and this analysis is further triangulated with video-stimulated-recall-interviews that are analysed using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis. This paper argues that the EMI teacher's translanguaging practices facilitate the process of transforming student contributions into academic terminology and concepts. The process of deploying translanguaging for transforming student contributions highlights translanguaging as an important component of the teacher's classroom interactional competence for constructing new configurations of language practices and achieving specific pedagogical purposes. This study seeks to understand the development of teacher professional knowledge about models and modeling of a Chemistry Education associate professor, experienced and specialized in modeling-based teaching from a longitudinal socio-historical perspective. To do so, we analyzed her statements about her life history in terms of school and academic education, as well as professional practices for the last 18 years. Data were constructed from the transcription of those statements and interpreted according to theoreticalmethodological procedures based on both a microgenetic analysis, promoting the decontextualization of contexts, and a macrogenetic analysis, from the recontextualization of contexts. This made it possible to trace her experiences from the student context at the secondary school to the experiences as university professor about to teach a course on models and modeling to a class of future teachers. The data analysis showed that, in her teaching history, various educational situations and contexts involving modeling-based teaching influenced her teacher professional knowledge about models and modeling, as well as how some turning points influenced and took part of the development of such knowledge. This study favors an understanding of the constitution of the subject (the associate professor) as it allows entering into her life contexts in which developmental paths of her teacher professional knowledge were identified and characterized. Furthermore, it contributes to the understanding of how science teachers can develop such knowledge from a longitudinal socio-historical perspective, which may have implications for teachers education. In this study, it is aimed to reveal the view of Turkish history in Turkmenistan and Turkmenistan-Turkey relations through textbooks. In the study, historical research, one of the qualitative research methods, was used. The main data of the study consist of the history textbooks currently taught in the Turkmenistan education system from the fifth to the eleventh grades. In this context, ten different textbooks were analysed in line with the purpose of the study and the relevant parts written in Turkmenistan Turkish were transferred to today's Turkish. Subsequently, the data obtained were categorised and evaluated under the headings of Turkish History and Republic of Turkey. When the findings of the research are analysed, it is seen that history education in Turkmenistan is presented with a national narrative and Turkish history in Turkmen history textbooks is evaluated on the axis of Turkmen national history. As a matter of fact, in this narrative, which starts with the Oghuz Turkmen State and continues in the direction of Gokturk-Karahanli-Gazneli-Seljuk-Ottoman states Turkmen identity has a global character. With this feature, Turkmens are considered as the descendants of a generation that established great states in history. In addition to political and military developments in Turkish history, the textbooks also include elements of culture and civilisation. In Turkmenistan history textbooks, the National Struggle, the republic and some revolutions in the first years of the republic were also mentioned. Atatürk was given a special place and his role and importance in history was emphasised. It is noticeable that Turkmenistan's relations with modern Turkey have been covered on the axis of domestic and foreign policy. In this context, the focus is on Turkish domestic politics, political developments and elections, starting from the Turgut Özal era and continuing with the AK Party era. In foreign policy, Turkey's situation during the Cold War period and NATO are mentioned, and information about Turkey's foreign policy on the east-west and regional axis until the beginning of the 21st century is given. At the end of the Turkey chapter in Turkmenistan history textbooks, Turkmenistan-Turkey relations are emphasised. It is noteworthy that this information presented in Turkmenistan history textbooks constitutes an opportunity for the preparation of common history education and history textbooks of the Turkic world. Concepts, which are the basic building blocks of knowledge, play an important role in history education. This study was conducted to reveal the perceptions and misconceptions of social studies teacher candidates about historical concepts. The study was carried out using qualitative research method. Purposeful sampling method was used for selecting the research participants. Equal numbers of female and male Social Studies teacher candidates studying at a state university were selected as research participants in the study. A semi-structured interview form was used to reveal the participants' perceptions about the concepts under scrutiny. Descriptive data analysis technique was used to analyze the collected research data. As a result of the data analysis, it was found that the pre-service teachers had difficulty in giving scientific definitions of the historical concepts examined in the study, and they defined the concepts on the basis of the connotations and analogies in their minds. It was also found that most of the pre-service teachers could not fully define the concepts, and they experienced confusion and misconceptions about some historical concepts. The reasons for their misconceptions are attributable to their incomplete and incorrect knowledge about concepts or their inability to associate the concepts with each other within the context of the relevant subject learned. The Utopía y Praxis Latinoamericana magazine has published its 105th issue, which focuses on social and cultural criticism, environmental sustainability, resistance through symbolism and cultural practices, and methodology and epistemology in social research. The articles explore the connections between the local and the global, the ancestral and the contemporary, and the individual and the collective, with the aim of promoting broader social and epistemic justice. The reflection on identity and community is highlighted, as well as the questioning of established structures of power and knowledge. The author emphasizes the importance of axiology and normativity in the dynamics of symbols in the Latin American symbolic universe, mentioning examples such as the reinterpretation of "Caliban" and the resistance symbolized by the Virgin of Guadalupe and the handkerchief of the Mothers of Plaza de Mayo. It is concluded that symbols play a crucial role in articulating discourses and practices of resistance, liberation, and cultural and social vindication in Latin America. In addition, the magazine includes book reviews on the end of the cycle of anticapitalist revolutions, the role of the Inquisition in colonial Chile, psychological practice from cosmobiocentric perspectives, the life and work of Pablo González Casanova, and the theoretical, historical, and political evolution of social change in Latin America. The ways in which the recent past of political violence is presented to the students is one of the fundamental tasks of contemporary education. However, it is often constricted by the rational and cognitive objectives of the duty of memory. In response to this, in this paper I propose an ethnographic gaze, attentive and sensitive to the textures of its daily performance, in order to contribute in a more solid and realistic way to the pedagogy of the duty of remembrance. This look has allowed me, in an investigation carried out in La Plata (Buenos Aires, Argentina) in 2018, to account for the intertwining of the work around the recent past with the school culture and the disciplinary code of history, with the relationships that the subjects have with each other and, through the links they build between different temporalities, with multiple attitudes and values. Background: The conduct of rare disease clinical trials is still hampered by methodological problems. The number of patients suffering from a rare condition is variable, but may be very small and unfortunately statistical problems for small and finite populations have received less consideration. This paper describes the outline of the iSTORE project, its ambitions, and its methodological approaches. Methods: In very small populations, methodological challenges exacerbate. iSTORE's ambition is to develop a comprehensive perspective on natural history course modelling through multiple endpoint methodologies, subgroup similarity identification, and improving level of evidence. Results: The methodological approaches cover methods for sound scientific modeling of natural history course data, showing similarity between subgroups, defining, and analyzing multiple endpoints and quantifying the level of evidence in multiple endpoint trials that are often hampered by bias. Conclusion: Through its expected results, iSTORE will contribute to the rare diseases research field by providing an approach to better inform about and thus being able to plan a clinical trial. Amsterdam's National Holocaust Museum is due to open in March 2024. It is the first and only museum to tell the story of the attempt by the Nazis to eradicate Jews from the Netherlands, a history of segregation, persecution, and murder. Yet the story is also one of rescue, survival, and solidarity. One of the museum's main goals is to engage visitors by involving them in a learning experience, in particular, to encourage young people to study and to develop the skills they need to be able to understand the past, to see how this impacts the present, and to recognize and challenge discrimination and antisemitism today. This article begins by sketching the presentation in the new museum and examines how the museum's educational facilities (presentation and programs) encourage audiences to think about what they can do to combat discrimination in general, and antisemitism in particular. The purpose of this study was to explore the effects of an educational video game on high school students' motivation, self-efficacy and knowledge. The game tells the story of Mariano Melgar, a Peruvian thinker, patriot and hero. The authors used a quasi-experimental design and conducted pre- and post-tests to estimate the effect of the video game. The sample consisted of 67 students from two schools in Lima. The students were randomly assigned to one of two conditions: playing a video game or watching a documentary. Results show that playing the video game was more effective in increasing students' knowledge, whereas watching a documentary increased demotivation and decreased self-efficacy through vicarious experience. The rapid integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools, specifically text-to-image generators, across various domains has had a profound impact on numerous fields. Despite this, the potential applications of AI image generators in architectural education, particularly in teaching the history of architecture, remain underexplored. This research aims to uncover the possibilities of utilizing AI image generators, with a specific focus on the capabilities of Leonardo AI, to enhance communication and engagement. This study employed an experimental methodology to investigate how the integration of AI image generators in education on the subject of "History of Architecture" promises to elevate the learning experience, offering new perspectives, visualizations, and interactive tools. Two workshops were conducted with university students to explore AI image generators' potential applications in architectural history education. The first workshop utilized an iterative approach, while the second aimed to assess students' analytical skills. The ultimate objective was to determine the capabilities of this tool and stimulate discussions regarding its potential future implementations. Following the workshops, online questionnaires were administered to students, and interviews were conducted with educators. The findings of this research underscore the need for validating AI-generated images, establishing guidelines to prevent misuse, and designing tailored AI tools for History of Architecture courses, thereby paving the way for further advancements in architectural history education. Most of the history education research that addresses controversial issues suggests that disputes arising in the history classroom are rooted in students’ diverse identities that relate differently to history. Therefore, a history education that wants to ease tensions must try both to make these different identities and their relations to history visible and to enable an understanding of different relations to history based on identity. This paper analyses the Solidarity movement narratives, focusing on church representatives, religious issues, and symbols in the Polish history textbooks for upper secondary schools between 1991 and 2018. The analysed textbooks prove to reinforce Poland's national and religious identities, with John Paul II and the priest Popiełuszko being the primary national heroes of the Solidarity movement. The Catholic Church is presented as a protector of national values during the Solidarity period. The study also reveals the gradual reduction and simplification of the textbooks' content. This tendency is a trigger for the polarisation of the historical discourse, posing a weapon for secular policies to misuse the ideological and symbolic roles of the Church in reproducing the Pole-Catholic pattern in history textbooks. Using historical thinking for analyzing the teaching and learning of secondary school history, this paper contributes to literature and debates on the pedagogical potential of museums in this endeavor. Despite the existence of museums and expansive literature on their historical significance in various world settings, there has not been much effort to connect history teaching and learning to this institution. Drawing our arguments from literature on historical thinking and museum studies, we explore the value of museums in the teaching and learning of secondary school history. We commend the inherent value in museums if their educational programs are packaged effectively for this purpose. Apart from connecting learners to cognitive activities as well as fostering an understanding and application of its disciplinary competencies, museums also engage with elements of historical thinking. Disciplinary competencies of history include critical thinking, extrapolation, evaluation of sources and detection of bias. Elements of historical thinking which makes museums stand out as potentially significant in secondary school pedagogy are empathy, historical significance, primary source evidence, cause and consequence and continuity and change. However, despite their esteemed pedagogical value, operationalizing teaching and learning of history using various museums facilities comes with several challenges which include high cost of organizing lessons, a strain on the school timetable, complexities associated with logistical and legal demands of out of school visits. This case study of the Russian Empire, based on the analysis of more than 100 primary sources in the form of textbooks on domestic history (uchebniki otechestvennoi istorii) and archival documentation, is intended to help understand the evolution of the formation of domestic history as a school subject as an integral part of the imperialist state's historical policy. The essence of the work was an attempt to periodise the development of the educational narrative as one of the components influencing the mentality of the Russian population – or rather, certain segments of it – and the extent of this phenomenon from the point of view of postcolonial studies. Special attention was also paid in the text to considerations based on discourse analysis of how the history of rulers-tsars gradually became the history of the people-Russians. As one of the most literary and transdisciplinary cultural practices, speculative design has become one of the best mediums for discussing emerging technologies, the Anthropocene and the ecological crisis. When design history is merely perceived as established knowledge about the past and fails to engage in dialogue with reality or individual interaction, it often struggles to inspire students' agency in learning and willingness to deep involvement in research. Alternative design history, however, serves as a type and method of historiography that actively constructs history and alternatively imagines the past. It aims to situate historical knowledge as the context for design problem exploration rather than an end goal of education. This approach guides educators and learners to co‐speculate on historical design knowledge. By 'reversing' specific elements of historical experience, such as gender mentioned in this article, and employing alternative imagination to form what‐if scenarios and pose inquiries about existing historical facts, a distinct form of 'counterfactual history' emerges that diverges notably from traditional design history. Throughout speculation within 'counterfactual history', students can distinguish between historical facts and realities, which enables students to comprehend the construction of historical knowledge, the individuality of historical narratives, and the standpoint of historical discourse. In this way, it helps students cultivate a historical interest that 'starts from the self', guiding them to foster resilient historical thinking and a critical awareness of reality. The goal of this study is to try to understand how history teachers in Arab high schools in Israel navigate their way between the official curriculum and their Palestinian-Arab identity. I examine how they broach learning material that contradicts their beliefs and their understanding of recent history in the region. To this end I used qualitative research based on interpretative phenomenological analysis. The participants included Arab teachers, both men and women, who we interviewed using in-depth open interviews. In the literature review and from the findings we can see that the state, through the education system in general and through history teaching in particular, tries to disconnect the Palestinian-Arabs from their history, their people, and their national identity. These practices fit the descriptions of settler-colonialists' behavior toward indigenous populations. The findings show that the teachers use one of three approaches to deal with the state's educational policy. One group of teachers focuses on achievement using the material they are given in order to stay out of trouble. Another group finds creative ways to cautiously expose the students to the Arab narrative. The third group faces the challenge head on, presenting the students with the Palestinian narrative in addition to the Jewish Zionist one. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
