The cosmogenic meteoric 10Be that is produced in the atmosphere and mainly scavenged by rainfall is a valuable tool for determining dates and rates of Earth surface processes. A key prerequisite for its applications is the knowledge of the long-term 10Be depositional flux to Earth's surface. Previous efforts on obtaining 10Be depositional fluxes include general atmospheric circulation modelling (GCM), empirical fitting of rainfall 10Be records, and determining the inventory of soil profiles of known age. Here, we derive 10Be depositional fluxes from Holocene river terrace 10Be inventories across the Taiwan mountain belt. We measured 10Be and 9Be concentrations from three terrace profiles, with 14C ages ranging between 3.83 and 9.05 cal. kyr BP and sampling depths of up to 6.2 m. Based on 10Be inventories of our river terraces, the calculated long-term 10Be depositional fluxes vary from 0.32 to 0.49 × 106 at/cm2/yr in the Taiwan orogen. We identify partial Be retention, surface erosion, multi-phase sediment deposition, and incomplete sampling depth in these terraces as potential causes of flux underestimation. When accounting for each of these factors and their uncertainties, the resulting flux estimates of each terrace show an overlapping range of 0.66–0.88 × 106 at/cm2/yr. This newly constrained flux range representative over millennial timescales is thus recommended for Earth surface applications in the fast-eroding Taiwan orogen, especially in regions with similar climatic conditions as the studied terraces. When comparing to flux estimates from other approaches, the flux from the rainfall-based fitting equation exceeds our new terrace-derived flux by more than a factor of two. We consider such high flux to be unlikely for the Taiwan orogen, and suggest that the control of precipitation on the 10Be flux here may be overestimated in rainfall data fitting. The GCM-derived flux overestimates the 10Be depositional flux in this setting to a smaller degree (at least 23%), which is in accordance with findings from previous global data compilation of 10Be fluxes. • We constrained Holocene 10Be depositional flux in Taiwan using 3 terrace profiles. • Measured terrace-derived flux is 0.32–0.49 × 106 at/cm2/yr. • These fluxes are similar to global flux models when considering flux uncertainties. • Such local calibration is essential to use meteoric 10Be in Earth surface studies. • Geological and cosmogenic data from Corsica reveal two-stage river capture events. • Clast lithologies demonstrate a progressive reduction of the Paleo-Ostriconi basin. • River capture led to the formation of a large Pliocene-Quaternary submarine fan. • Focused erosion can affect sites of former river capture after millions of years. • Corsica is still adapting to the disequilibrium caused by uplift of Alpine Corsica. Quantitative analysis of fluvial topography and sediment yield changes are often independently used to detect major river capture events and episodes of drainage reorganization. Here we use a unique set of geological and in situ 10Be cosmogenic data from Corsica, Western Mediterranean, to provide evidence of major river capture events affecting the former Paleo-Ostriconi river catchment during the Pliocene, and to illustrate how the landscape of Corsica is still reacting to the disequilibrium caused by the late Miocene uplift of Alpine Corsica. We found that ∼1280 km2 of basin area originally draining towards the Ligurian Sea were abruptly connected to the Tyrrhenian Sea by the capturing Tavignano and Golo rivers, which led to the formation of a large Pliocene-Quaternary submarine fan offshore the Tyrrhenian coast. The increased sediment yield towards the Tyrrhenian margin after river capture in the Pliocene was three times greater than the average sediment yield in the same source-to-sink system during the Holocene (410±100 t·km−2· a −1 vs ∼131±8 t·km−2· a −1) and greater magnitude than any subsequent peaks in sediment yield during late Pleistocene glaciations. 10Be-derived denudation rates reveal that focused erosion still affects retreating knickpoints near the sites of former river capture in central Corsica, suggesting persistence of landscape disequilibrium for several millions of years. Our results demonstrate the potentially large impact of river capture on the stratigraphic record and highlight the importance of full consideration of landscape response times to onshore disturbances for any reliable interpretation of the offshore sedimentary archive. Detrital thermochronology is often employed to assess the evolutionary stage of an entire orogenic belt using the lag-time approach, i.e., the difference between the cooling and depositional ages of detrital mineral grains preserved in a stratigraphic succession. The impact of different eroding sources to the final sediment sink is controlled by several factors, including the short-term erosion rate and the mineral fertility of eroded bedrock. Here, we use apatite fertility data and cosmogenic-derived erosion rates in the Po river catchment (Alps–Apennines) to calculate the expected percentage of apatite grains supplied to the modern Po delta from the major Alpine and Apenninic eroding sources. We test these predictions by using a cutting-edge dataset of trace-element and Nd-isotope signatures on 871 apatite grains from 14 modern sand samples, and we use apatite fission-track data to validate our geochemical approach to provenance discrimination. We found that apatite grains shed from different sources are geochemically distinct. Apatites from the Lepontine dome in the Central Alps show relative HREE enrichment, lower concentrations in Ce and U, and higher 147 Sm/ 144 Nd ratios compared to apatites derived from the External Massifs. Derived provenance budgets point to a dominant apatite contribution to the Po delta from the high-fertility Lepontine dome, consistent with the range independently predicted from cosmonuclide and mineral-fertility data. Our results demonstrate that the single-mineral record in the final sediment sink can be largely determined by high-fertility source rocks exposed in rapidly eroding areas within the drainage. This implies that the detrital thermochronology record may reflect processes affecting relatively small parts of the orogenic system under consideration. A reliable approach to lag-time analysis would thus benefit from an independent provenance discrimination of dated mineral grains, which may allow to proficiently reconsider many previous interpretations of detrital thermochronology datasets in terms of orogenic-wide steady state. The temporal evolution of erosion over million-year timescales is key to understand the development of mountain ranges and adjacent fold-and-thrust belts. While models of orogenic wedge dynamics predict an instantaneous response of erosion to pulses of rock uplift, stream-power based models predict that catchment-wide erosion maxima significantly lag behind a pulse of rock uplift. Here, we explore the relationships between rock uplift, erosion, and sediment deposition in the Argentine Precordillera fold-and-thrust belt at 30°S. Using a combination of 10 Be-derived paleo-erosion rates, constraints on re-exposure using 26 Al/ 10 Be ratios, geomorphic observations and detrital zircon provenance, we demonstrate that the attainment of maximum upland erosion rates lags the maximum rate of deformation over million-year timescales. The magnitudes and causes of the erosional delays shed new light on the catchment erosional response to tectonic deformation and rock uplift in orogenic wedges. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Deciphering the response of sediment routing systems to climatic forcing is fundamental for understanding the impacts of climate change on landscape evolution. In the Kangra Basin (northwest Sub-Himalaya, India), upper Pleistocene to Holocene alluvial fills and fluvial terraces record periodic fluctuations of sediment supply and transport capacity on timescales of 10 3 to 10 5 yr. To evaluate the potential influence of climate change on these fluctuations, we compare the timing of aggradation and incision phases recorded within remnant alluvial fans and terraces with climate archives. New surface-exposure dating of six terrace levels with in-situ cosmogenic 10 Be indicates the onset of incision phases. Two terrace surfaces from the highest level (T1) sculpted into the oldest preserved alluvial fan (AF1) date back to 53.4 ± 3.2 ka and 43.0 ± 2.7 ka (1 σ ). T2 surfaces sculpted into the remnants of AF1 have exposure ages of 18.6 ± 1.2 ka and 15.3 ± 0.9 ka , while terraces sculpted into the upper Pleistocene–Holocene fan (AF2) provide ages of 9.3 ± 0.4 ka (T3), 7.1 ± 0.4 ka (T4), 5.2 ± 0.4 ka (T5) and 3.6 ± 0.2 ka (T6). Together with previously published OSL ages yielding the timing of aggradation, we find a correlation between variations in sediment transport with oxygen-isotope records from regions affected by the Indian Summer Monsoon. During periods of increased monsoon intensity and post-Last Glacial Maximum glacial retreat, aggradation occurred in the Kangra Basin, likely due to high sediment flux, whereas periods of weakened monsoon intensity or lower sediment supply coincide with incision. It has been proposed that at short timescales of 102–105 yr, climatic variability can explain variations in sediment flux, but in orogens with pronounced climatic gradients rate changes caused by the oscillating efficiency in rainfall, runoff, and/or sediment transport and deposition are still not well-constrained. To explore landscape responses under variable climatic forcing, we evaluate time windows of prevailing sediment aggradation and related paleo-erosion rates from the southern flanks of the Dhauladhar Range in the western Himalaya. We compare past and present 10Be-derived erosion rates of well-dated Late Pleistocene fluvial landforms and modern river sediments and reconstruct the sediment aggradation and incision history based on new luminescence data. Our results document significant variations in erosion rates ranging from 0.1 to 3.4 mm/yr over the Late Pleistocene. We find that, during times of weak monsoon intensity, the moderately steep areas (hillslope angles of 27 ± 13°) erode at lower rates of 0.1–0.4 mm/yr compared to steeper (>40°) crestal regions of the Dhauladhar Range that erode at 0.8−1.3 mm/yr. In contrast, during several millennia of stronger monsoon intensity, both the moderately steep and high slope areas record higher erosion rates (>1-3.4 mm/yr). Lithological clast-count analysis shows that this increase of erosion is focused in the moderately steep areas, where Lesser Himalayan rocks are exposed.
