Along the western coastal plain of the Red Sea, the discovery of lithic tools proved that the occurrence of archaeological remains belonged to the Stone Age era. Unfortunately, until recently, most of the Stone Age site plans in the western Red Sea periphery have been unknown because of change in climate in addition to covering these sites with a large layer of sand. Recently, remote sensing (RS) data have proven to be effective at identifying buried archaeological sites using radar satellite imagery due to their ability to penetrate the land surface. This paper aims to identify and reconstruct several potential Stone Age sites using radar satellite images in the Tokar region, North-Eastern Sudan, on the western plain of the Red Sea. Radar (Sentinel-1 SAR GRD: C-band) data were processed utilizing the advantages of the Google Earth Engine platform and Snap software. The results of this research showed that some potential settlements belonging to the Stone Age era (expectedly dating back to the end of the Pleistocene and/or the initial phase of the Holocene) have subcircular shapes with some interior subcircles. These results shed new light on the potential construction technique, size, and function of the settlement in the Stone Age era and can provide some initial insights into the ancient lifestyle in this region. Observations of clouds and precipitation in the microwave domain from the active dual-frequency precipitation radar (DPR) and the passive Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) Microwave Imager (GMI) onboard the GPM Core Observatory satellite are used in synergy with cloud tracking information derived from infrared imagery from the GOES-13 and Meteosat-7 geostationary satellites for analysis of the life cycle of precipitating cloud systems, in terms of temporal evolution of their macrophysical characteristics, in several oceanic and continental regions of the tropics. The life cycle of each one of the several hundred thousand cloud systems tracked during the 2-yr (2015–16) analysis period is divided into five equal-duration stages between initiation and dissipation. The average cloud size, precipitation intensity, precipitation top height, and convective and stratiform precipitating fractions are documented at each stage of the life cycle for different cloud categories (based upon lifetime duration). The average life cycle dynamics is found remarkably homogeneous across the different regions and is consistent with previous studies: systems peak in size around midlife; precipitation intensity and convective fraction tend to decrease continuously from the initiation stage to the dissipation. Over the three continental regions, Amazonia (AMZ), central Africa (CAF), and Sahel (SAH), at the early stages of clouds' life cycle, precipitation estimates from the passive GMI instrument are systematically found to be 15%–40% lower than active radar estimates. By highlighting stage-dependent biases in state-of-the-art passive microwave precipitation estimates over land, we demonstrate the potential usefulness of cloud tracking information for improving retrievals and suggest new directions for the synergistic use of geostationary and low-Earth-orbiting satellite observations. In this paper, a 3D conformal meta-lens designed for manipulating electromagnetic beams via height-to-phase control is proposed. The structure consists of a 40 × 20 array of tunable unit cells fabricated using 3D printing, enabling full 360° phase compensation. A novel automatic synthesizing method (ASM) with an integrated optimization process based on genetic algorithm (GA) is adopted here to create the meta-lens. Simulation using CST Microwave Studio and MATLAB reveals the antenna's beam deflection capability by adjusting phase compensations for each unit cell. Various beam scanning techniques are demonstrated, including single-beam, dual-beam generation, and orbital angular momentum (OAM) beam deflection at different angles of 0°, 10°, 15°, 25°, 30°, and 45°. A 3D-printed prototype of the dual-beam feature has been fabricated and measured for validation purposes, with good agreement between both simulation and measurement results, with small discrepancies due to 3D printing's low resolution and fabrication errors. This meta-lens shows promise for low-cost, high-gain beam deflection in mm-wave wireless communication systems, especially for sensing applications, with potential for wider 2D beam scanning and independent beam deflection enhancements. Surface air pressure is one of the most important parameters used in Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) models. Although it has been measured using weather stations on the ground for many decades, the numbers of measurements are sparse and concentrated on land. Few measurements from buoys and ships are available over ocean. Global measurements can only be achieved by using remote sensing from Space, which is challenging; however, a novel design using Differential Absorption Radar (DAR) can provide a potential solution. The technique relies on two facts: first the electromagnetic fields are absorbed mainly by oxygen and water vapor, and second that oxygen is well mixed. In this work we discuss a space‐borne concept, which aims at providing, over the ocean, consistent, and regular observations for determining surface air pressure from space by a design of a multi‐tone radar operating on the upper wing of the O2 absorption band with tones from 64 to 70 GHz. Simulations of radar vertical profiles based on the output of a state of‐the‐art microphysical retrievals applied to the A‐Train suite of sensors are exploited to establish the performance of such a system for surface pressure determination. In particular the identification and quantification of errors introduced by the presence of water vapor, cloud liquid water and rain water and the potential of a correction via the three‐tone method is discussed. Errors introduced by surface measurement noise and temperature profile uncertainties are discussed as well. Results show that accuracy between 2 and 5 hPa is at reach. Plain Language Summary: Pressure is an important atmospheric variable. A radar‐based remote sensing techinque to measure surface pressure is proposed. The methodology is based on the darkening of the surface return when moving closer to the center of the 60 GHz oxygen absorption line. Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellites (GOES) Radar Estimation via Machine Learning to Inform NWP (GREMLIN) is a machine learning model that outputs composite reflectivity using GOES-R Series Advanced Baseline Imager (ABI) and Geostationary Lightning Mapper (GLM) input data. GREMLIN is useful for observing severe weather and initializing convection for short-term forecasts, especially over regions without ground-based radars. This study expands the evaluation of GREMLIN's accuracy against the Multi-Radar Multi-Sensor (MRMS) System to the entire contiguous United States (CONUS) for the entire annual cycle. Regional and temporal variation of validation metrics are examined over CONUS by season, day of year, and time of day. Since GREMLIN was trained with data in spring and summer, root-mean-square difference (RMSD) and bias are lowest in the order of summer, spring, fall, and winter. In summer, diurnal patterns of RMSD follow those of precipitation occurrence. Winter has the highest RMSD because of cold surfaces mistaken as precipitating clouds, but some of these errors can be removed by applying the ABI clear-sky mask product and correcting biases using a lookup table. In GREMLIN, strong echoes are closely related to the existence of lightning and corresponding low brightness temperatures, which result in different error distributions over different regions of CONUS. This leads to negative biases in cold seasons over Washington State, lower 30-dBZ critical success index caused by high misses over the Northeast, and higher false alarms over Florida that are due to higher frequency of lightning. The Biomass Proxy is a new cloud-free vegetation monitoring product that offers timely and analysis-ready data indicative of above-ground crop biomass dynamics at 10m spatial resolution. The Biomass Proxy links the consistent and continuous temporal signal of the Sentinel-1 Cross Ratio (CR), a vegetation index derived from Synthetic Aperture Radar backscatter, with the spatial information of the Sentinel-2 Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), a vegetation index derived from optical observations. A global scaling relationship between CR and NDVI forms the basis of a novel fusion methodology based on static and dynamic combinations of temporal and spatial responses of CR and NDVI at field level. The fusion process is used to mitigate the impact on product quality of low satellite revisit periods due to acquisition design or persistent cloud coverage, and to respond to rapid changes in a timely manner to detect environmental and management events. The resulting Biomass Proxy provides time series that are continuous, unhindered by clouds, and produced uniformly across all geographical regions and crops. This review article provides an overview of various aspects of lunar exploration, including missions to the Moon, collection and analysis of lunar sample data in laboratories, and the processing and analysis of remote sensing data, particularly using radar techniques. Both remote sensing and in-situ methods are critical for advancing our understanding of the lunar surface and its properties. This review article focuses on the identification and quantification of water–ice deposits located in areas such as Permanently shadowed areas (PSRs) and the lunar poles (section " Lunar Poles and PSRs: A Special Environment "). These volatile resources have the potential to serve as valuable sources of fuel for future missions, making it crucial for the lunar community to determine their abundance and distribution. After thoroughly examining lunar samples using high-precision laboratory techniques, many preconceptions were dispelled which is highlighted in the section " Laboratory Investigation of Lunar samples ". But as in-situ observations are difficult to acquire, especially terrestrial bodies samples, remote sensing techniques allow the global understanding of the surface. The article specifically highlights the importance of understanding the electrical characteristics of the lunar surface and how radar inversion can provide valuable information in this regard. The " Conclusion " section of this review article serves as a key takeaway for readers, underscoring the critical role that both in-situ and remote sensing techniques play in advancing our understanding of the Moon. The tropical forests in the Amazon store large amounts of carbon and are still considered a carbon sink. There is evidence that deforestation can turn a forest landscape into a carbon source due to land use and forest degradation. Deforestation causes fragmented forest landscapes. It is known from field experiments that forest dynamics at the edge of forest fragments are altered by changes in the microclimate and increased tree mortality ("edge effects"). However, it is unclear how this will affect large fragmented forest landscapes, and thus the entire Amazon region. The aim of this study is to investigate different forest attributes in edge and core forest areas at high resolution, and thus to identify the large-scale impacts of small-scale edge effects. Therefore, a well-established framework combining forest modelling and lidar-generated forest structure information was combined with radar-based forest cover data. Furthermore, forests were also analyzed at the landscape level to investigate changes between highly fragmented and less-fragmented landscapes. This study found that the aboveground biomass in forest edge areas is 27% lower than in forest core areas. In contrast, the net primary productivity is 13% higher in forest edge areas than in forest core areas. In the second step, whole fragmented landscapes were analyzed. Nearly 30% of all forest landscapes are highly fragmented, particularly in the regions of the Arc of Deforestation, on the edge of the Andes and on the Amazon river banks. Less-fragmented landscapes are mainly located in the central Amazon rainforest. The aboveground biomass is 28% lower in highly fragmented forest landscapes than in less-fragmented landscapes. The net primary productivity is 13% higher in highly fragmented forest landscapes than in less-fragmented forest landscapes. In summary, fragmentation of the Amazon rainforest has an impact on forest attributes such as biomass and productivity, with mostly negative effects on forest dynamics. If deforestation continues and the proportion of highly fragmented forest landscapes increase, the effect may be even more intense. By combining lidar, radar and forest modelling, this study shows that it is possible to map forest structure, and thus the degree of forest degradation, over a large area and derive more detailed information about the carbon dynamics of the Amazon region. The use of WiFi signals for sensing purposes has attracted a lot of interest from both the radar and communications communities and several techniques have been explored. In the attempt of meeting the requirements for small sensor size, compactness, and easy deployment, the authors consider reference‐free approaches, namely approaches that do not require a good copy of the transmitted waveform to be available at the radar receiver. To this end, the authors first resort to a passive radar‐based processing scheme that only exploits the invariant a priori known initial portion of the physical layer protocol data unit, that is, the PHY Preamble, and its limitations in practical applications is investigated. Specifically, the authors show that, with this approach, an accurate time, phase, and frequency synchronization is essential and a possible strategy is investigated. As an alternative solution the authors consider a forward scatter radar‐based approach where only the amplitude modulation of the received signal is exploited to detect the presence of a moving target thus avoiding the need to know the transmitted signal. For the first time, the authors comparatively investigate advantages and drawbacks of the two reference‐free approaches and present practical strategies to handle the limitations observed. The surface currents in coastal areas are closely related to the ecological environment and human activities, and are influenced by both local and remote factors of different timescales, resulting in complex genesis and multi-timescale characteristics. In this research, 9-year-long, hourly high-frequency radar (HFR) surface current observations are utilized together with satellite remote sensing reanalysis products and mooring data, and based on the Empirical Orthogonal Function (EOF) and correlation analysis, we revealed the multi-timescale characteristics of the surface currents in Fremantle Sea (32°S), Southwestern Australia, and explored the corresponding driving factors as well as the impact of El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) on the nearshore currents. Results show that the currents on the slope are dominated by the southward Leeuwin Current (LC), and the currents within the shelf are dominated by winds, which are subject to obvious diurnal and seasonal variations. The strong bathymetry variation there, from a wide shelf in the north to a narrow shelf in this study region, also plays an important role, resulting in the frequent occurrence of nearshore eddies. In addition, the near-zonal winds south of 30°S in winter contribute to the interannual variability of the Leeuwin Current at Fremantle, especially in 2011, when the onshore shelf circulation is particularly strong because of the climatic factors, together with the wind-driven offshore circulation, which results in significant and long-lasting eddies. The southward Leeuwin Current along Southwestern Australia shows a strong response to interannual climatic variability. During La Niña years, the equatorial thermal anomalies generate the westward anomalies in winds and equatorial currents, which in turn strengthen the Leeuwin Current and trigger the cross-shelf current as well as downwelling within the shelf at Fremantle, whereas during El Niño years, the climate anomalies and the response of coastal currents are opposite. This paper provides insights into the multi-timescale nature of coastal surface currents and the relative importance of different driving mechanisms. It also demonstrates the potential of HFR to reveal the response of nearshore currents to climate anomalies when combined with other multivariate data. Ecosystem functions and services are severely threatened by unprecedented global loss in biodiversity. To counteract these trends, it is essential to develop systems to monitor changes in biodiversity for planning, evaluating, and implementing conservation and mitigation actions. However, the implementation of monitoring systems suffers from a trade‐off between grain (i.e., the level of detail), extent (i.e., the number of study sites), and temporal repetition. Here, we present an applied and realized networked sensor system for integrated biodiversity monitoring in the Nature 4.0 project as a solution to these challenges, which considers plants and animals not only as targets of investigation, but also as parts of the modular sensor network by carrying sensors. Our networked sensor system consists of three main closely interlinked components with a modular structure: sensors, data transmission, and data storage, which are integrated into pipelines for automated biodiversity monitoring. We present our own real‐world examples of applications, share our experiences in operating them, and provide our collected open data. Our flexible, low‐cost, and open‐source solutions can be applied for monitoring individual and multiple terrestrial plants and animals as well as their interactions. Ultimately, our system can also be applied to area‐wide ecosystem mapping tasks, thereby providing an exemplary cost‐efficient and powerful solution for biodiversity monitoring. Building upon our experiences in the Nature 4.0 project, we identified ten key challenges that need to be addressed to better understand and counteract the ongoing loss of biodiversity using networked sensor systems. To tackle these challenges, interdisciplinary collaboration, additional research, and practical solutions are necessary to enhance the capability and applicability of networked sensor systems for researchers and practitioners, ultimately further helping to ensure the sustainable management of ecosystems and the provision of ecosystem services. This paper presents studies on using Sentinel-1 imagery data to determine the attributes of mixed forest stands. The fieldwork is carried out in Kostroma, Vologda, and Arkhangelsk oblasts and the Udmurt Republic. The study reveals that quantitative and qualitative forest characteristics correlate with radar survey parameters; the value of this correlation is identified. The proliferation of radar technology has given rise to a growing demand for advanced, high-performance transmitter front-ends operating in the 24 GHz frequency band. This paper presents a design analysis of a radio frequency (RF) transmitter (TX) front-end operated at a 24 GHz frequency and designed using 65 nm complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) technology for radar applications. The proposed TX front-end design includes the integration of an up-conversion mixer and power amplifier (PA). The up-conversion mixer is a Gilbert cell-based design that translates the 2.4 GHz intermediate frequency (IF) signal and 21.6 GHz local oscillator (LO) signal to the 24 GHz RF output signal. The mixer is designed with a novel technique that includes a duplex transconductance path (DTP) for enhancing the mixer's linearity. The DTP of the mixer includes a primary transconductance path (PTP) and a secondary transconductance path (STP). The PTP incorporates a common source (CS) amplifier, while the STP incorporates an improved cross-quad transconductor (ICQT). The integrated PA in the TX front-end is a class AB tunable two-stage PA that can be tuned with the help of varactors as a synchronous mode to increase the PA bandwidth or stagger mode to obtain a high gain. The PA is tuned to 24 GHz as a synchronous mode PA for the TX front-end operation. The proposed TX front-end showed an excellent output power of 11.7 dBm and dissipated 7.5 mW from a 1.2 V supply. In addition, the TX front-end achieved a power-added efficiency (PAE) of 47% and 1 dB compression point (OP1dB) of 10.5 dBm. In this case, the output power is 10.5 dBm higher than the linear portion of the response. The methodologies presented herein have the potential to advance the state of the art in 24 GHz radar technology, fostering innovations in fields such as autonomous vehicles, industrial automation, and remote sensing. We present a comprehensive quality-controlled 15-month dataset of remote sensing observations of low-level mixed-phase clouds (LLMPCs) taken at the high Arctic site of Ny-Ålesund, Svalbard, Norway. LLMPCs occur frequently in the Arctic region and extensively affect the energy budget. However, our understanding of the ice microphysical processes taking place in these clouds is incomplete. The dual-wavelength and polarimetric Doppler cloud radar observations, which are the cornerstones of the dataset, provide valuable fingerprints of ice microphysical processes, and the high number of cases included allows for the compiling of robust statistics for process studies. The radar data are complemented with thermodynamic retrievals from a microwave radiometer, liquid base height from a ceilometer, and wind fields from large-eddy simulations. All data are quality controlled, especially the cloud radar data, which are accurately calibrated, matched, and corrected for gas and liquid-hydrometeor attenuation, ground clutter, and range folding. We finally present an analysis of the temperature dependence of Doppler, dual-wavelength, and polarimetric radar variables, to illustrate how the dataset can be used for cloud microphysical studies. The recent development of satellite products for observing precipitation based on different technologies (microwaves, infrared, etc.) allows for near-real-time meteorological studies. The purpose of this article is to evaluate 11 satellite products (GHE, PDIR, IMERG-Early v6, IMERG-Late v6, CMORPH v0.x, CMORPH-RT v0.x, GSMaP-NRT v7, GSMaP-NRT-GC v7, GSMaP-NOW v7, GSMaP-NOW-GC v7, and DATABOURG) currently available and compare them to 2 ground-based radar networks (PANTHERE and OPERA) and the French rain-gauge network RADOME. Two case studies of intense precipitation over France (22 to 25 April 2022 and 24 to 29 June 2022) were selected. The radar estimations are closer to the RADOME observations than the satellite-based estimations, which tend to globally underestimate the precipitation amounts over the areas of interest while OPERA tends to strongly overestimate precipitation amounts during the June case study. The PANTHERE radar product and the carrier-to-noise product DATABOURG shows promising results. Near-real-time satellite products tend to have closer precipitation amounts to the reference dataset than satellite products with a shorter latency. The interferometric radar altimeter (IRA) is an innovative remote sensing sensor that enables the observation of mesoscale and submesoscale (meso–submesoscale) ocean dynamic phenomena. The charge-neutral atmosphere introduces path delay and bending in signal propagation. In this study, three types of sea surface height (SSH) errors caused by charge-neutral atmosphere propagation path for IRA were identified: differential delay error (DDE), path delay error (PDE), and path bending error (PBE). Among them, DDE exhibits a proportionality to the negative zenith neutral delay (ZND) and demonstrates a significant increase with the incident angle; PDE is solely reliant on the ZND; PBE is like DDE in trend and magnitude resembling a ramp. Intriguingly, PBE exhibits insensitivity to variations in the charge-neutral atmosphere, behaving more like a systematic error. Theoretically, PBE leads to an increase in the SSH error of about 1.2 cm at far range for SWOT. The ZND spectrum fitted from the Jason-3 zenith delay correction data is additionally utilized to simulate the spatial distribution of ZND anomaly within the SWOT observation swaths. Then, the impact of PDE anomaly (PDEA), PBE, and DDE anomaly (DDEA) on the observation performance of SWOT is also considered in conjunction with SSH data provided by HYCOM. The findings indicate that both PDEA and PBE significantly reduce IRA's performance in oceanic phenomena, while the impact of DDEA can be disregarded. The PBE can distort the sea surface trend and increases the mean sea level within the range, requiring further attention. Significance Statement: This paper focuses on how the signal path affects the accuracy of measuring sea surface height (SSH) using the interferometric radar altimeter (IRA) in the charge-neutral atmosphere. The present paper defines three types of SSH errors caused by propagation path to IRA, namely, differential delay error (DDE), path delay error (PDE), and path bending error (PBE). Three types of SSH errors will make a significant impact on the altimetry performance of IRA. Among them, PDE spatial anomaly and PBE will reduce the expected observation performance of the meso–submesoscale ocean phenomena in IRA's swath, while PBE has not received enough attention in previous studies. In classical radar imaging, such as in Earth remote sensing, electromagnetic waves are usually assumed to propagate in free space. However, in numerous applications, such as ground penetrating radar or non-destructive testing, this assumption no longer holds. When there is a multi-material background, the subsurface image reconstruction becomes considerably more complex. Imaging can be performed in the spatial domain or, equivalently, in the wavenumber domain (k-space). In subsurface imaging, to date, objects with a non-planar surface are commonly reconstructed in the spatial domain, by the Backprojection algorithm combined with ray tracing, which is computationally demanding. On the other hand, objects with a planar surface can be reconstructed more efficiently in k-space. However, many non-planar surfaces are partly planar. Therefore, in this paper, a novel concept is introduced that makes use of the efficient k-space-based reconstruction algorithms for partly planar scenarios, too. The proposed algorithm forms an image from superposing sub-images where as many image parts as possible are reconstructed in the wavenumber domain, and only as many as necessary are reconstructed in the spatial domain. For this, a segmentation scheme is developed to determine which parts of the image volume can be reconstructed in the wavenumber domain. The novel concept is verified by measurements, both from monostatic synthetic aperture radar data and multiple-input–multiple-output radar data. As an important part of remote sensing data, weather radar plays an important role in convective weather forecasts to reduce extreme precipitation disasters. The existing radar echo extrapolation methods do not utilize the local natural characteristics of the radar echo effectively but only roughly extract the whole characteristics of the radar echo. To address these challenges, we design a spatiotemporal difference and generative adversarial fusion model (STDGAN). Specifically, a spatiotemporal difference module (STD) is designed to extract local weather patterns and model them in detail. In our model, spatiotemporal difference information and spatiotemporal features captured by the model itself are fused together. In addition, our model is trained in a generative adversarial network (GAN) framework; it helps to generate a clearer map of future radar echoes at the image level. The discriminator consists of multi-scale feature extractors, which can simulate weather models of various scales more completely. Finally, extrapolation experiments were conducted using actual radar echo data from Shijiazhuang and Nanjing. The experiments have shown that our model has a more accurate prediction performance for predicting local weather patterns and overall echo change trajectories compared with previous research models. Our model achieved MSE, PSNE, and SSIM values of 132.22, 37.87, and 0.796, respectively, on the Shijiazhuang radar echo dataset. In addition, our model also showed better performance results on the Nanjing radar echo dataset. The results show that the MSE was 49.570, the PSNR was 0.714, and the SSIM was 30.633. The Sissingué Gold Project is in Northern Côte d'Ivoire and part of the southern extension, a large peneplain of the landscape in South Mali. The area has experienced extensive weathering and erosion over a long time, resulting in a widespread and complex regolith cover. This diverse and vast regolith cover poses considerable difficulties for exploration. To overcome this problem, we adopted mapping of regolith units using machine learning (ML) with support vector machine (SVM) and artificial neural network (ANN) algorithms. The main objectives were to (1) make the predictive regolith map of the study region using these algorithms with data obtained from Landsat-8 operational land imager, Advanced Land Observing Satellite Phased Array Type L-Band Synthetic Aperture Radar digital elevation model and Sentinel-1A; (2) show the method of pre-processing and processing the required data and (3) develop the regolith landform unit (RLU) map from the predictive regolith map and collected data based on the Relict – Erosional – Depositional model. Tests using the SVM and ANN algorithms showed that both ML tools could accurately map regolith landforms. An innovative method of optimizing data using parameters is presented. The results showed that ANN outperformed SVM with an overall accuracy of 87.01% and a kappa coefficient of 0.84, whereas the corresponding values for SVM were 86.69% and 0.84, respectively. However, the validation data obtained from SVM-based prediction exhibited a better score than that of validation data obtained from ANN-based prediction. The Sentinel-1A radar band combined with Landsat-8 data reduced the vegetation-masking effect and improved the classification results. The RLUs of this area are composed primarily of relicts at 24.91%, including lateritic residuum and soil, depositional material at 36.39% with exotic sediments and ferrierite and the remaining 38.7% of erosional material made of saprolite, colluvial fragments, and mottled zones on flanks. The measurement of global precipitation is important for quantifying and understanding the Earth's systems. While gauges form the basis of conventional measurements, global measurements are only truly possible using satellite observations. Over the last 50–60 years, satellite systems have evolved to provide a comprehensive suite of observing systems, including many sensors that are capable of precipitation retrievals. While much progress has been made in developing and implementing precipitation retrieval schemes, many techniques have concentrated upon retrievals over regions with well-defined precipitation systems, such as the tropics. At higher latitudes, such retrieval schemes are less successful in providing accurate and consistent precipitation estimates, especially due to the large diversity of precipitation regimes. Furthermore, the increasing dominance of snowfall at higher latitudes imposes a number of challenges that require further, urgent work. This paper reviews the state of the current observations and retrieval schemes, highlighting the key factors that need to be addressed to improve the estimation and measurement of precipitation at mid-to-high latitudes. This paper outlines the construction of a new Multiplatform Precipitation Feature (MPF) framework designed to facilitate storm‐based analyses of data sets from multiple independent observing platforms for convective studies. The MPF approach is applied to ground‐ and space‐based precipitation observations and retrievals from the Global Precipitation Measurement mission Validation Network with space‐based lightning measurements from the Lightning Imaging Sensor on board the International Space Station to create a prototype MPF database. The data are synthesized in a thunderstorm‐like, feature‐based framework that enables broad statistical analyses of the storm‐based relationships between the microphysics, kinematics, and electrical properties of convection that can contribute insight into their morphological, regional, and seasonal variations. This manuscript details how MPFs are defined from precipitation data and how observations from multiple additional platforms are combined within the context of an MPF thunderstorm boundary and used to characterize the feature. A demonstration of the prototype database as a proof‐of‐concept showcases its flexibility to conduct both large‐scale storm‐based statistical studies as well as MPF‐facilitated thunderstorm case studies. These studies focused on the quantitative assessment of the surface displacement velocities and rates and their natural and man-made controlling factors as the potential risks along the seismically active 70 km section of buried oil and gas pipeline in Azerbaijan using Persistent Scatterer Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (PS-InSAR) and Small Baseline Subset (SBAS-InSAR) remote sensing analysis. The diverse spatial distribution and variation of ground movement processes along pipelines demonstrated that general geological and geotechnical understanding of the study area is not sufficient to find and mitigate all the critical sites of subsidence and uplifts for the pipeline operators. This means that both techniques outlined in this paper provide a significant improvement for ground deformation monitoring or can significantly contribute to the assessment of geohazards and preventative countermeasures along petroleum and gas pipelines. Using global Sentinel-1 radar backscatter data, we systematically map the locations of glaciers with surge-type activity during 2017–22. Patterns of pronounced increases or decreases in the strongest backscatter between two winter seasons often indicate large changes in glacier crevassing, which we treat here as a sign of surge-type activity. Validations against velocity time series, terminus advances and crevassing found in optical satellite images confirm the robustness of this approach. We find 115 surge-type events globally between 2017 and 2022, around 100 of which on glaciers already know as surge-type. Our data reveal a pronounced spatial clustering in three regions, (i) Karakoram, Pamirs and Western Kunlun Shan (~50 surges), (ii) Svalbard (~25) and (iii) Yukon/Alaska (~9), with only a few other scattered surges elsewhere. This spatial clustering is significantly more pronounced than the overall global clustering of known surge-type glaciers. The 2017–22 clustering may point to climatic forcing of surge initiation. The monitoring of Natura 2000 habitats (Habitat Directive 92/43/EEC) is a key activity ensuring the sufficient protection of European biodiversity. Reporting on the status of Natura 2000 habitats is required every 6 years. Although field mapping is still an indispensable source of data on the status of Natura 2000 habitats, and very good field-based data exist in some countries, keeping the field-based habitat maps up to date can be an issue. Remote sensing techniques represent an excellent alternative. Here, we present a new method for detecting habitats that were likely misclassified during the field mapping or that have changed since then. The method identifies the possible habitat mapping errors as the so-called "attribute outliers", i.e., outlying observations in the feature space of all relevant (spectral and other) characteristics of an individual habitat patch. We used the Czech Natura 2000 Habitat Layer as field-based habitat data. To prepare the feature space of habitat characteristics, we used a fusion of Sentinel-1 and Sentinel-2 satellite data along with a Digital Elevation Model. We compared outlier ratings using the robust Mahalanobis distance and Local Outlier Factor using three different thresholds (Tukey rule, histogram-based Scott's rule, and 95% quantiles in χ2 distribution). The Mahalanobis distance thresholded by the 95% χ2 quantile achieved the best results, and, because of its high specificity, appeared as a promising tool for identifying erroneously mapped or changed habitats. The presented method can, therefore, be used as a guide to target field updates of Natura 2000 habitat maps or for other habitat/land cover mapping activities where the detection of misclassifications or changes is needed. Wind retrievals from high‐frequency radars (HFRs) provide high‐density, hourly wind estimates over the ocean near the coast. These wind retrievals are a promising new source of near‐surface wind estimates in coastal regions where it is difficult to deploy large networks of buoys and where scatterometers cannot observe because of land contamination. In addition to improving ocean monitoring, these wind retrievals are also useful in numerical weather prediction. The wind estimates are retrieved from the HFR Doppler spectra in conjunction with the Simulating WAves Nearshore (SWAN) model, HFR forward model, and HFR adjoint model. In this work, wind retrievals were generated from three Coastal Ocean Dynamics Applications Radar (CODAR) SeaSonde HFR sites located near the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay in August 2017 and assimilated in the Coupled Ocean/Atmosphere Mesoscale Prediction System® (COAMPS) model. The impact of the assimilated HFR wind retrievals on near‐surface weather forecasts is measured with adjoint‐derived forecast sensitivity observation impact (FSOI) and a comparison to forecasts from a data‐denial observing system experiment (OSE). The FSOI measurement indicates the HFR winds had neutral impact on the 12‐h forecast while the OSE comparison suggests a small improvement in the 10‐m u and v winds at lead times up to 36 h. Compared to a similar study in the Southern California Bight, the small impact on the forecast seen in this Chesapeake Bay study could be related to there being a smaller number of wind retrievals in a smaller region during a period where the HFR wind retrievals were already similar to the background wind field. We suggest that HFR wind retrievals used for numerical weather prediction may be more beneficial when generated for long swaths of coastlines rather than small, isolated areas. Close-range sensors are employed to observe glaciological processes that operate over short timescales (e.g. iceberg calving, glacial lake outburst floods, diurnal surface melting). However, under poor weather conditions optical instruments fail while the operation of radar systems below 17 GHz do not have sufficient angular resolution to map glacier surfaces in detail. This letter reviews the potential of millimetre-wave radar at 94 GHz to obtain high-resolution 3-D measurements of glaciers under most weather conditions. We discuss the theory of 94 GHz radar for glaciology studies, demonstrate its potential to map a glacier calving front and summarise future research priorities. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Ice-penetrating radar sounding is a powerful geophysical tool for studying terrestrial and planetary ice with a rich glaciological heritage reaching back over half a century. Recent years have also seen rapid growth in both the radioglaciological community itself and in the scope and sophistication of its analysis of ice-penetrating radar data. This has been spurred by a combination of growing datasets and improvements in computational resources as well as advances in radar sounding instrumentation and platforms. We present a machine-learning approach to detect and analyze meteor echoes (MADAME), which is a radar data processing workflow featuring advanced machine-learning techniques using both supervised and unsupervised learning. Our results demonstrate that YOLOv4, a convolutional neural network (CNN)-based one-stage object detection model, performs remarkably well in detecting and identifying meteor head and trail echoes within processed radar signals. The detector can identify more than 80 echoes per minute in the testing data obtained from the Jicamarca high power large aperture (HPLA) radar. MADAME is also capable of autonomously processing data in an interferometer mode, as well as determining the target's radiant source and vector velocity. In the testing data, the Eta Aquarids meteor shower could be clearly identified from the meteor radiant source distribution analyzed automatically by MADAME, thereby demonstrating the proposed algorithm's functionality. In addition, MADAME found that about 50 percent of the meteors were traveling in inclined and near-inclined circular orbits. Furthermore, meteor head echoes with a trail are more likely to originate from shower meteor sources. Our results highlight the capability of advanced machine-learning techniques in radar signal processing, providing an efficient and powerful tool to facilitate future and new meteor research. More than two billion birds migrate through the Gulf of Mexico each spring en route to breeding grounds in the USA and Canada. This region has a long history of complex natural and anthropogenic environments as the northern Gulf coast provides the first possible stopover habitats for migrants making nonstop trans‐Gulf crossings during spring migration. However, intense anthropogenic activity in the region, which is expanding rapidly at present, makes migrants vulnerable to a multitude of obstacles and increasingly fragments and alters these habitats. Understanding the timing of migrants' overwater arrivals has biological value for expanding our understanding of migration ecology relative to decision‐making for nonstop flights, and is imperative for advancing conservation of this critical region through the identification of key times in which to direct conservation actions (e.g. temporary halting of wind turbines, reduction of light pollution). We explored 10 years of weather surveillance radar data from five sites along the northern Gulf of Mexico coast to quantify the daily timing and intensity of arriving trans‐Gulf migrants. On a daily scale, we found that migrant intensity peaked an average of nine hours after local sunrise, occurring earliest at easternmost sites. On a seasonal level, the greatest number of arrivals occurred between late April and early May, with peak intensity occurring latest at westernmost sites. Overall intensity of migration across all 10 years of data was greatest at the westernmost sites and decreased moving farther to the east. These findings emphasize the differential spatial and temporal patterns of use of the Gulf of Mexico region by migrating birds, information that is essential for improving our understanding of the ecology of trans‐Gulf migration and for supporting data‐driven approaches to conservation actions for the migratory birds passing through this critical region. When forming the radar situation of a terrain, in order to increase its information content and to extract useful information, multi-position spatially distributed systems for integrating multi-angle radar data established by small-sized UAV-based airborne radars are used. In this case, each radar station belonging to a multi-position system as a probing signal must have its own unique marked signal. Such a setup will allow the signals reflected from ground objects and zones to be "attached" to specific receiving-transmitting positions of the multi-position system. This requirement results from the fact that each transceiver position emits one probing signal, and then receives all the echo signals reflected from the underlying surface and previously emitted by other radar devices of the multi-position system. Such a setup of multi-position systems requires the researcher to look for and investigate specialized systems of marked code structures used to modulate the probing signals in order to identify them in a joint radar channel. Thus, the problem at hand is how to look for and investigate novel marked code structures used to generate a system of probing signals, the use of which will allow it to be "attached" to a specific receiving-transmitting position of a multi-position onboard system and to identify them in a joint radar channel in the course of the remote sensing of the underlying surface. The purpose of this work is to conduct a study on the subject of the squeak and choice of a system of code structures that have a low level of side lobes of autocorrelation functions and uniformly distributed values of the levels of the cross-correlation function. To achieve this goal, the relevance of the study is substantiated in the introduction. The second section analyzes the level of side lobes for classical and modified Barker codes with an asymmetric alphabet. On the basis of this analysis, it was concluded that it is expedient to apply this approach for codes longer than Barker codes. Therefore, in the third section, the features of the generation of M-sequences are considered. The fourth section presents a technique for searching for new marked code structures, taking into account their mutual correlation properties for modifying M-sequences in order to implement multi-positional systems. The fifth section presents computer experiments on the search for marked code structures based on the modifications of M-sequences and presents the numerical characteristics of the correlation properties of the considered marked codes. And finally, in the sixth section, the final conclusions of the study are presented and recommendations are given for their further practical application. The practical significance of this study lies in the fact that the proposed new marked code structures are necessary for the synthesis of probing signals in the implementation of spatially distributed systems that function for the high-probability detection and high-precision determination of the coordinates of physical objects and are also necessary for the formation of radar images in a multi-position mode. Synthetic aperture sonar (sas) systems are designed to observe stationary scatterers located near the sediment interface. Less commonly, a sas system may be used to observe scattering features located above the sonar in the water column. The Undersea Remote Sensing (USRS) project, sponsored by the Office of Naval Research, was a collaborative Directed Research Initiative (DRI) focused on studying dynamic estuarine water column features. During the USRS DRI, researchers from multiple institutions gathered to observe tidal features at various estuaries along the coast of the United States using both in situ and remote sensing techniques, including sas. The first studied estuary was the mouth of the Connecticut River (CTR). Data captured by a sas system deployed during a tidal event were post-processed to create three-dimensional observations of the structure of the leading edge of the CTR's ebb plume front. From these observations, lobed structures similar in scale to previously reported instabilities are revealed, with the present observations providing additional insight regarding the structure of the bubble distribution behind the front. Velocity estimates of plume features were also determined from sas data and shown to compare favorably with concurrent marine radar estimates. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper intends to propose an automated deep learning-based land cover classification model of remote sensing images. The model includes (i) pre-processing, (ii) feature extraction and (iii) classification. The captured synthetic-aperture radar (SAR) and Landsat-8 images are initially pre-processed using the Gabor filtering model. Subsequently, from SAR images the gray-level-co-occurrence matrix-based texture characteristics are extracted, and temperature vegetation index-based characteristics, normalized vegetation index-based features, normalized difference index-based features and coloration index features are extracted from Landsat-8 images. Finally, the extracted features are subjected to an optimized deep belief network (DBN), where the weight is fine-tuned by the optimization logic. For this, a new Sunflower adopted Red Deer (SARD) algorithm is introduced in this work that hybrids the concept of Red Deer algorithm and Sunflower optimization. The performance of the proposed classification model is compared over other conventional models concerning different measures. Especially, the accuracy of the presented work (SARD+DBN) for Testcase3 is 5, 7, 6 and 30% better than existing DA + DBN, JA + DBN, SLnO+DBN and LA + DBN methods, respectively. A new instrument has been proposed for measuring surface air pressure over the marine surface with a combined active/passive scanning multichannel differential absorption radar to provide an estimate of the total atmospheric column oxygen content. A demonstrator instrument, the Microwave Barometric Radar and Sounder (MBARS), has been funded by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration for airborne test missions. Here, a proof-of-concept study to evaluate the potential impact of spaceborne surface pressure data on numerical weather prediction is performed using the Goddard Modeling and Assimilation Office global observing system simulation experiment (OSSE) framework. This OSSE framework employs the Goddard Earth Observing System model and the hybrid 4D ensemble variational Gridpoint Statistical Interpolation data assimilation system.Multiple flight and scanning configurations of potential spaceborne orbits are examined. Swath width and observation spacing for the surface pressure data are varied to explore a range of sampling strategies. For wider swaths, the addition of surface pressures reduces the root-mean-square surface pressure analysis error by as much as 20% over some ocean regions. The forecast sensitivity observation impact tool estimates impacts on the Pacific Ocean basin boundary layer 24-h forecast temperatures for spaceborne surface pressures that are on par with rawinsondes and aircraft and estimates greater impacts than the current network of ships and buoys. Waterfowl migrations are large‐scale events that involve millions of birds moving over broad geographic extents, which make them difficult to quantify and study. Historically, wildlife managers have relied mostly on field surveys, such as visual counts from the ground or air that sample at small spatial or temporal extents, or both. Combining field surveys with remote sensing data comprehensively collected over large spatial extents at high temporal frequency may improve the study of migrating waterfowl distributions. We tested the strength of the relationship between broad‐scale weather surveillance radar data and fine‐scale field surveys of waterfowl abundance at wetlands within the Rainwater Basin of Nebraska, USA, from 2017–2019. Radar reflectivity of waterfowl at the peak exodus of evening flights was positively correlated with diurnal waterfowl count data, although there was unexplained variation in the relationship. The association was also very similar across various time scales ranging from daily to monthly averages of waterfowl abundance. We suggest that human‐based ground surveys can calibrate and leverage more comprehensive remote sensing data to get a broad understanding of waterfowl distributions during migration. Several confounding factors, such as spatial displacement between radar and survey observation, individual variation in orientation and body size, and identification of avian species sampled by radar, remain on the path to improving radar‐based waterfowl estimates. Vegetation structural complexity (VSC)—the three‐dimensional distribution of plants within an ecosystem—is an important ecological trait. To date, research has focused primarily on the effects of VSC on ecological patterns and processes, but comparatively little is known about what drives variation in VSC.Recent advances in active remote sensing technology, particularly light detection and ranging and radio detection and ranging, have allowed the measurement of VSC at unprecedented spatial scales and resolutions. Out of this and earlier work has emerged evidence that VSC is typically associated with greater ecosystem functioning (especially microclimate regulation, productivity, faunal diversity and habitat provisioning), making restoration of vegetation complexity a potentially powerful restoration tool.Recent studies of VSC across natural and experimental gradients of plant diversity have also revealed that more diverse plant communities tend to be more structurally complex. However, the shape and generality of this relationship—and the mechanism(s) by which phytodiversity might contribute to structural complexity—remain poorly understood.Here, we review how active remote sensing has facilitated recent VSC research and shaped our understanding of the relationship between vegetation complexity and ecosystem function. We then present a theoretical framework for the relationship between phytodiversity and VSC based on classic biodiversity‐ecosystem functioning principles. Finally, we evaluate the evidence for the notion that diverse plant assemblages tend to be more structurally complex and explore the shape of the relationship between phytodiversity and VSC using data from 13 recent remote sensing studies.Synthesis. The relationship between phytodiversity and VSC appears to be almost universally positive. Preliminary evidence further suggests that the most common relationships between phytodiversity and VSC are linear or saturating, indicating that the extent of functional redundancy between species varies across plant communities and ecosystems. In contrast, we find little evidence for exponential or negative relationships between plant diversity and VSC, suggesting that even modest increases in plant diversity could markedly increase structural complexity. Additional investigations of phytodiversity‐VSC relationships are necessary to establish whether the observed positive relationships are causal (and, if so, in which direction) and to clarify the potential impact of plant community restoration on structural complexity and broader ecosystem function. Clouds cover substantial parts of the Earth's surface and they are one of the most essential components of the global climate system impacting the Earth's radiation balance as well as the water cycle redistributing water around the globe as precipitation. Therefore, continuous observation of clouds is of primary interest in climate and hydrological studies. This work documents the first efforts in Italy in remote sensing clouds and precipitation using a combination of K- and W-band (24 and 94 GHz, respectively) radar profilers. Such a dual-frequency radar configuration has not been widely used yet, but it could catch on in the near future given its lower initial cost and ease of deployment for commercially available systems at 24 GHz, with respect to more established configurations. A field campaign running at the Casale Calore observatory at the University of L'Aquila, Italy, nestled in the Apennine mountain range is described. The campaign features are preceded by a review of the literature and the underpinning theoretical background that might help newcomers, especially in the Italian community, to approach cloud and precipitation remote sensing. This activity takes place in interesting time for radar sensing clouds and precipitation, stimulated both by the launch of the ESA/JAXA EarthCARE satellite missions scheduled in 2024, which will have on-board, among other instruments, a W-band Doppler cloud radar and the proposal of new missions using cloud radars currently undergoing their feasibility studies (e.g., WIVERN and AOS in Europe and Canada, and U.S., respectively). Inundation dynamics are the primary control on greenhouse gas emissions from peatlands. Situated in the central Congo Basin, the Cuvette Centrale is the largest tropical peatland complex. However, our knowledge of the spatial and temporal variations in its water levels is limited. By addressing this gap, we can quantify the relationship between the Cuvette Centrale's water levels and greenhouse gas emissions, and further provide a baseline from which deviations caused by climate or land-use change can be observed, and their impacts understood. We present here a novel approach that combines satellite-derived rainfall, evapotranspiration and L-band Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) data to estimate spatial and temporal changes in water level across a sub-region of the Cuvette Centrale. Our key outputs are a map showing the spatial distribution of rainfed and flood-prone locations and a daily, 100 m resolution map of peatland water levels. This map is validated using satellite altimetry data and in situ water table data from water loggers. We determine that 50% of peatlands within our study area are largely rainfed, and a further 22.5% are somewhat rainfed, receiving hydrological input mostly from rainfall (directly and via surface/sub-surface inputs in sloped areas). The remaining 27.5% of peatlands are mainly situated in riverine floodplain areas to the east of the Congo River and between the Ubangui and Congo rivers. The mean amplitude of the water level across our study area and over a 20-month period is 22.8 ± 10.1 cm to 1 standard deviation. Maximum temporal variations in water levels occur in the riverine floodplain areas and in the inter-fluvial region between the Ubangui and Congo rivers. Our results show that spatial and temporal changes in water levels can be successfully mapped over tropical peatlands using the pattern of net water input (rainfall minus evapotranspiration, not accounting for run-off) and L-band SAR data. We present a comprehensive quality-controlled 15-month dataset of remote sensing observations of low-level mixedphase clouds (LLMPCs) taken at the high Arctic site of Ny-Ålesund, Svalbard, Norway. LLMPCs occur frequently in the Arctic region, and extensively affect the energy budget. However, our understanding of the ice microphysical processes taking place in these clouds is incomplete. The dual-wavelength and polarimetric Doppler cloud radar observations, which are the cornerstones of the dataset, provide valuable fingerprints of icemicrophysical processes, and the high number of cases included allows for the compiling of robust statistics for process studies. The radar data are complemented with thermodynamic retrievals from a microwave radiometer, liquid base height from a ceilometer and wind fields from large-eddy simulations. All data are quality controlled, especially the cloud radar data, which are accurately calibrated, matched, and corrected for gas and liquid-hydrometeor attenuation, ground clutter and range folding. We finally present an analysis of the temperature dependence of Doppler, dual wavelength, and polarimetric radar variables, to illustrate how the dataset can be used for cloud microphysical studies. The goal of this paper is to propose a method to achieve a higher classification rate in Polarimetric Synthetic Aperture Radar (PolSAR) image classification. In our work, PolSAR features are extracted from Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) and also Graph Convolutional Networks (GCNs). Due to the construction of the adjacency matrix on all the data, traditional GCNs usually suffer from a substantial computational cost, particularly in large‐scale remote sensing (RS) problems. To this end, first of all, we propose a new mini‐batch GCN (called Mini‐GCN), which allows to train large‐scale GCNs in a mini‐batch fashion. More significantly, our designed mini‐GCN is capable of inferring out‐of‐sample data without re‐training networks and improving classification performance. Furthermore, as CNNs and GCNs can extract different types of PolSAR features, an intuitive solution to break the performance bottleneck of a single model is to fuse them. Since mini‐GCNs can perform batch‐wise network training (enabling the combination of CNNs and GCNs), we can use the feature fusion strategy. Therefore, in this paper, a local graph‐based fusion method is proposed to couple dimension reduction and feature fusion of the information extracted from the designed CNN and Mini‐GCN. Experimental results on real PolSAR data are very encouraging. Compared to the methods using only single feature and stacking all the features together, the proposed feature fusion method improves the overall classification accuracy on the real PolSAR data sets for more than 5%. Moreover, the experiments conducted on PolSAR datasets, demonstrate the advantages of the used mini‐GCNs over the traditional GCNs and the superiority of the proposed feature fusion method with regards to the single CNN or GCN models. This paper proposed a novel texture feature extraction technique for radar remote sensing image retrieval application using adaptive tetrolet transform and Gray level co-occurrence matrix. Tetrolets have provided fine texture information in the radar image. Tetrominoes have been employed on each decomposed radar image and best pattern of tetrominoes has been chosen which represents the better radar image geometry at each decomposition level. All three high pass components of the decomposed radar image at each level and low pass component at the last level are considered as input values for Gray level co-occurrence matrix (GLCM), where GLCM provides the spatial relationship among the pixel values of decomposed components in different directions at certain distances. The GLCMs of decomposed components are computed in (1). (0, π/2, π, 3π/2), (2). (π/4, 3π/4, 5π/4, 7π/4) (3). (0, π/4, π/2, 3π/4, π, 3π/2, 5π/4, 7π/4) directions individually and subsequently a texture feature descriptor is constructed by computing statistical parameters from the corresponding GLCMs. The retrieval performance is validated on two standard radar remote sensing image databases: 20-class satellite remote sensing dataset and 21-class land-cover dataset. The average metrices i.e., precision, recall and F-score are 61.43%, 12.29% and 20.47% for 20-class satellite remote sensing dataset while 21-class land-cover dataset have achieved 67.75%, 9.03% and 15.94% average metrices. Due to its maneuverability and agility, the shipborne high-frequency surface wave radar (HFSWR) provides a new way of monitoring large-area marine dynamics and environment information. However, wind direction ambiguity is problematic when using monostatic shipborne HFSWR for wind direction inversion. In this article, an unambiguous wind direction measurement method based on wind direction interval limitation is proposed. The two first-order spectral wind direction estimation methods are first presented using the relationship between the normalized amplitude differences or ratios of the broadened Doppler spectrum and the wind direction. Moreover, based on the characteristic of a small wind direction estimation error in a large included angle between the spectral wind direction and the radar beam, the wind direction interval is obtained by counting the distribution of radar-measured wind direction within this included angle. Furthermore, the eliminated ambiguity of wind direction is transformed to judge the relationship between the wind direction interval and the two curves, which represent the relationship between the spreading parameter and the wind direction. Therefore, the remote sensing monitoring of ocean surface wind direction fields can be realized by shipborne HFSWR. The simulation results are used to evaluate the performance of the proposed method and the multi-beam sampling method for wind direction inversion. The experimental results show that the errors of wind direction estimated by the multi-beam sampling method and the equivalent dual-station model are large, and the proposed method can improve the accuracy of wind direction measurement. Three widely used wave directional spreading models have been applied for performance comparison. Assimilating the proper amount of water vapor into a numerical weather prediction (NWP) model is essential in accurately forecasting a heavy rainfall. Radar data assimilation can effectively initialize the three-dimensional structure, intensity, and movement of precipitation fields to an NWP at a high resolution (±250 m). However, the in-cloud water vapor amount estimated from radar reflectivity is empirical and assumes that the air is saturated when the reflectivity exceeds a certain threshold. Previous studies show that this assumption tends to overpredict the rainfall intensity in the early hours of the prediction. The purpose of this study is to reduce the initial value error associated with the amount of water vapor in radar reflectivity by introducing advanced remote sensing data. The ongoing research shows that errors can be largely solved by assimilating satellite all-sky radiances and global positioning system radio occultation (GPSRO) refractivity to enhance the moisture analysis during the cycling period. The impacts of assimilating moisture variables from satellite all-sky radiances and GPSRO refractivity in addition to hydrometeor variables from radar reflectivity generate proper amounts of moisture and hydrometeors at all levels of the initial state. Additionally, the assimilation of satellite atmospheric motion vectors (AMVs) improves wind information and the atmospheric dynamics driving the moisture field which, in turn, increase the accuracy of the moisture convergence and fluxes at the core of the convection. As a result, the accuracy of the timing and intensity of a heavy rainfall prediction is improved, and the hourly and accumulated forecast errors are reduced. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Remote sensing plays an increasingly important role in climate research, and as remote sensing observation files span longer periods of time, we are receiving more and more data on climate parameters such as clouds. Four decades ago, it was proposed that the area of planar shapes change with their perimeter following the power law. The exponent of this relation for the areas of clouds (typical and noctilucent) and rain determined by satellites and radar is 1.35 close to 4/3 of the classical turbulence theory of 1941. In this paper, we propose a new relationship between the area and the perimeter of rain and clouds using remote sensing observations. Earth's ionosphere has long been targeted as a medium for remote sensing of explosive terrestrial events such as earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, and nuclear/conventional weapon detonations. Until now, the only confirmed ionospheric detections have been of very large events that were easily detectable through other traditional global sensor systems (e.g., seismic). We present the first clear, confirmed detections of relatively low yield 1‐ton TNT‐equivalent chemical explosions using pulsed Doppler radar observations of isodensity layers in the ionospheric E region. The shape and spectra of the detected waveforms closely match predictions from the acoustic ray tracing and weakly nonlinear waveform propagation models. The explosions were roughly three orders of magnitude lower yield than any previous confirmed ionospheric detection and represent the first conclusive evidence that explosions of this size can have clear impacts on the ionosphere. This technique could improve the remote detection of both anthropogenic and natural explosive events. Plain Language Summary: Explosions, even of modest yield, generate copious amounts of acoustic waves across a wide range of frequencies. While the high frequencies are quickly absorbed by the atmosphere, the lowest frequencies, in the sub‐audible infrasound part of the spectrum, are capable of traveling to great distances. Typically this infrasound is detected on the ground using highly sensitive listening equipment such as microbarometers. We present a different method, however, where we utilize the fact that the upper atmosphere is ionized (the ionosphere) and is therefore a good target for a radar. As the sound wave passes through the ionosphere it sloshes the bulk ions such that it shows up an oscillating radar target. We use this new technique to clearly detect explosions with yields of 1‐ton TNT equivalent. These detections are 500 times smaller than previous confirmed detections using the ionosphere as a sensor for explosions. We describe results from coastal radar systems that observed anomalous current flows generated by the volcanic eruption in the Tongan archipelago on 15 January 2022 UTC, reporting the first radar detection of a volcanic tsunami. The eruption caused small tsunamis along the western U.S. Coast, generating some damage in a few harbors. The highest tsunami signal in U.S. tide gauge data from the California coast occurred at Arena Cove, with significant heights detected at Port San Luis and Crescent City. We analyze correlated wave orbital velocity detections by High Frequency (HF) radars along the coast between Gerstle Cove and Santa Barbara. Signals observed by the radars indicate that the event had two phases, each with its own distinct genesis: an initial weak surface disturbance, most likely generated by the wave of atmospheric pressure that moved outward from the blast source at just below the speed of sound, followed by a stronger disturbance that arrived approximately 3.5 h later, matching the arrival time for a wave moving entirely through the water from the volcano to the U.S. West Coast. We conclude that this phase consists of a conventional water wave tsunami and weaker waves generated by the pulse. We also report the detection of a small pulse-generated event off the west coast of Florida. Radar observations are compared with water level measurements at nearby tide gauges and a DART buoy, and with observations of barometric pressure. We point out that a Proudman near-resonance at the Tonga Trench is unlikely to explain the second phase observations. Comparison with tide gauge signals at San Francisco, generated by the Krakatoa eruption in 1883, support our conclusions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Satellite radar backscatter contains unique information on land surface moisture, vegetation features, and surface roughness and has thus been used in a range of Earth science disciplines. However, there is no single global radar data set that has a relatively long wavelength and a decades-long time span. We here provide the first long-term (since 1992), high-resolution (∼8.9 km instead of the commonly used ∼25 km resolution) monthly satellite radar backscatter data set over global land areas, called the long-term, high-resolution scatterometer (LHScat) data set, by fusing signals from the European Remote Sensing satellite (ERS; 1992–2001; C-band; 5.3 GHz), Quick Scatterometer (QSCAT, 1999–2009; Ku-band; 13.4 GHz), and the Advanced SCATterometer (ASCAT; since 2007; C-band; 5.255 GHz). The 6-year data gap between C-band ERS and ASCAT was filled by modelling a substitute C-band signal during 1999–2009 from Ku-band QSCAT signals and climatic information. To this end, we first rescaled the signals from different sensors, pixel by pixel. We then corrected the monthly signal differences between the C-band and the scaled Ku-band signals by modelling the signal differences from climatic variables (i.e. monthly precipitation, skin temperature, and snow depth) using decision tree regression. The quality of the merged radar signal was assessed by computing the Pearson r , root mean square error (RMSE), and relative RMSE (rRMSE) between the C-band and the corrected Ku-band signals in the overlapping years (1999–2001 and 2007–2009). We obtained high Pearson r values and low RMSE values at both the regional (r≥0.92 , RMSE ≤ 0.11 dB, and rRMSE ≤ 0.38) and pixel levels (median r across pixels ≥ 0.64, median RMSE ≤ 0.34 dB, and median rRMSE ≤ 0.88), suggesting high accuracy for the data-merging procedure. The merged radar signals were then validated against the European Space Agency (ESA) ERS-2 data, which provide observations for a subset of global pixels until 2011, even after the failure of on-board gyroscopes in 2001. We found highly concordant monthly dynamics between the merged radar signals and the ESA ERS-2 signals, with regional Pearson r values ranging from 0.79 to 0.98. These results showed that our merged radar data have a consistent C-band signal dynamic. The LHScat data set (10.6084/m9.figshare.20407857; Tao et al., 2023) is expected to advance our understanding of the long-term changes in, e.g., global vegetation and soil moisture with a high spatial resolution. Background: One of the most critical topics in sports safety today is the reduction in injury risks through controlled fatigue using non-invasive athlete monitoring. Due to the risk of injuries, it is prohibited to use accelerometer-based smart trackers, activity measurement bracelets, and smart watches for recording health parameters during performance sports activities. This study analyzes the synergy feasibility of medical radar sensors and tri-axial acceleration sensor data to predict physical activity key performance indexes in performance sports by using machine learning (ML). The novelty of this method is that it uses a 24 GHz Doppler radar sensor to detect vital signs such as the heartbeat and breathing without touching the person and to predict the intensity of physical activity, combined with the acceleration data from 3D accelerometers. Methods: This study is based on the data collected from professional athletes and freely available datasets created for research purposes. A combination of sensor data management was used: a medical radar sensor with no-contact remote sensing to measure the heart rate (HR) and 3D acceleration to measure the velocity of the activity. Various advanced ML methods and models were employed on the top of sensors to analyze the vital parameters and predict the health activity key performance indexes. three-axial acceleration, heart rate data, age, as well as activity level variances. Results: The ML models recognized the physical activity intensity and estimated the energy expenditure on a realistic level. Leave-one-out (LOO) cross-validation (CV), as well as out-of-sample testing (OST) methods, have been used to evaluate the level of accuracy in activity intensity prediction. The energy expenditure prediction with three-axial accelerometer sensors by using linear regression provided 97–99% accuracy on selected sports (cycling, running, and soccer). The ML-based RPE results using medical radar sensors on a time-series heart rate (HR) dataset varied between 90 and 96% accuracy. The expected level of accuracy was examined with different models. The average accuracy for all the models (RPE and METs) and setups was higher than 90%. We use dual-polarization C-band data collected in the Southern Ocean to examine the properties of snow observed during a voyage in the austral summer of 2018. Using existing forward modeling formalisms based on an assumption of Rayleigh scattering by soft spheroids, an optimal estimation algorithm is implemented to infer snow properties from horizontally polarized radar reflectivity, the differential radar reflectivity, and the specific differential phase. From the dual-polarization observables, we estimate ice water content qi, the mass-mean particle size Dm, and the exponent of the mass–dimensional relationship bm that, with several assumptions, allow for evaluation of snow bulk density, and snow number concentration. Upon evaluating the uncertainties associated with measurement and forward model errors, we determine that the algorithm can retrieve qi, Dm, and bm within single-pixel uncertainties conservatively estimated in the range 120%, 60%, and 40%, respectively. Applying the algorithm to open-cellular convection in the Southern Ocean, we find evidence for secondary ice formation processes within multicellular complexes. In stratiform precipitation systems we find snow properties and infer processes that are distinctly different from the shallow convective systems with evidence for riming and aggregation being common. We also find that embedded convection within the frontal system produces precipitation properties consistent with graupel. Examining 5 weeks of data, we show that snow in open-cellular cumulus has higher overall bulk density than snow in stratiform precipitation systems with implications for interpreting measurements from space-based active remote sensors. Airborne scatterometer capability depends on not only the device's technical characteristics but also the scheme used for surface observations. Typically, a rotating-beam scatterometer uses a circular scheme for sampling normalized radar cross-sections (NRCS) at wind measurements over the sea. Here, we investigate wind retrieval using an updated semicircular scheme, providing the NRCS sampling at various combinations of incidence angles within the range 30° to 60°. The effectiveness of the wind retrieval using our semicircular sampling scheme was evaluated using Monte Carlo simulations, and we then developed corresponding wind algorithms that used a geophysical model function (GMF). As a result of the study, we found that a semicircular sampling scheme is well suited for wind retrieval over the sea using a rotating-beam scatterometer. We showed that a semicircular scheme can provide wind retrieval accuracies similar to those achievable with a conventional circular scheme, although the semicircular scheme requires approximately three times the number of NRCS samples integrated in each azimuth sector. Most importantly, however, the semicircular scheme enabled a maximum altitude for wind retrieval of twice the height possible with a circular scheme. In this study, we also demonstrate that the wind speed accuracy tends to increase with an increase in the incidence angle and similarly for the wind direction accuracy. Nonetheless, we then show that the simultaneous use of the NRCS sampling scheme at several incidence angles can increase the wind retrieval accuracy, especially when three or four incidence angles are used. The obtained results can be used to enhance airborne scatterometers and multimode radars operated in a scatterometer mode, including airborne high-altitude conical scanning radars, and can be applied to new remote sensing systems' development. In this study, the spherical particle model and ten nonspherical particle models describing the scattering properties of snow are evaluated for potential use in precipitation estimation from spaceborne dual-frequency precipitation radar. The single scattering properties of nonspherical snow particles are computed using discrete dipole approximation (DDA), while those of spherical particles are determined using Mie theory. The precipitation profiles from WRF output are then input to a forward radiative transfer model to simulate the radar reflectivity at Ka-band and Ku-band. The results are validated with Global Precipitation Mission Dual-Frequency Precipitation Radar measurements. Greater consistency between the simulated and observed reflectivity is obtained when using the sector- and dendrite-shape assumptions. For the case in this study, when using the spherical-shape assumption, radar underestimates the error of the cloud's top by about 300 m and underestimates the error of the cloud's area by about 15%. As snowflake shapes change with temperature, we use the range between −40 °C and −5 °C to define three temperature layers. The relationships between reflectivity (Z) and precipitation rate (R) are fitted separately for the three layers, resulting in  Z = 134.59 · R 1.184  (sector) and  Z = 127.35 · R 1.221  (dendrite) below −40 °C.
