Aim A discussion on how informatics knowledge and competencies can enable nursing to instantiate transition to integrated models of care. Background Costs of traditional models of care are no longer sustainable consequent to the spiralling incidence and costs of chronic illness. The international community looks towards technology-enabled solutions to support a shift towards integrated patient-centred models of care. Design Discussion paper. Data sources A search of the literature was performed dating from 2000-2015 and a purposeful data sample based on relevance to building the discussion was included. Discussion The holistic perspective of nursing knowledge can support and advance integrated healthcare models. Informatics skills are key for the profession to play a leadership role in design, implementation and operation of next generation health care. However, evidence suggests that nursing engagement with informatics strategic development for healthcare provision is currently variable. Implications for nursing A statistically significant need exists to progress health care towards integrated models of care. Strategic and tactical plans that are robustly pragmatic with nursing insights and expertise are an essential component to achieve effective healthcare provision. To avoid exclusion in the discourse dominated by management and technology experts, nursing leaders must develop and actively promote the advancement of nursing informatics skills. For knowledge in nursing practice to flourish in contemporary health care, nurse leaders will need to incorporate informatics for optimal translation and interpretation. Aim: To report the results of a mapping exercise by the European Federation of Nurses on current advanced practice nursing frameworks and developments across Europe. Design: Online, cross‐sectional, questionnaire study. Methods: An online questionnaire was distributed among 35 national nurses' associations across Europe in March 2021. The questionnaire solicited input on 60 items concerning key features of advanced practice nursing, intending to map existing developments and better understand the current state of advanced practice nursing in Europe. Data analysis used descriptive statistics, including counts and percentages, tabulation; open‐text responses were handled with thematic synthesis techniques. Results: The definition, sense‐making and operationalization of advanced practice nursing vary across Europe. Important variations were noted in the definition and requirements of advanced practice nursing, resulting in different views on the competencies and scope of practice associated with this role. Importantly, the level of education and training required to qualify and practice as an advanced practice nurse varies across European countries. Furthermore, only 11 countries reported the existence of a national legislation establishing minimum educational requirements. Conclusion: Significant variation exists in how countries define advanced practice nursing and how it is regulated at academic and practice levels. More research is needed to clarify whether this variation results from designing models of advanced practice nursing that work in different contexts; and what impact a standardized regulatory framework could have to grow the volume of advanced practice nurses across Europe. Impact: The current paper exposes the lack of clarity on the development and implementation of advanced practice nursing across Europe. We found significant variation in the definition, recognition, regulation and education of advanced practice nurses. Our data are essential to policymakers, professional associations and employers to ensure a coordinated and systematic effort in the consistency and ongoing development of advanced practice nurses across Europe. Aims: To perform temporal validation of a risk prediction model for breast cancer‐related lymphoedema in the European population. Design: Temporal validation of a previously developed prediction model using a new retrospective cohort of women who had undergone axillary lymph node dissection between June 2018 and June 2020. Methods: We reviewed clinical records to identify women who did and did not develop lymphoedema within 2 years of surgery and to gather data regarding the variables included in the prediction model. The model was calibrated by calculating Spearman's correlation between observed and expected cases. Its accuracy in discriminating between patients who did versus did not develop lymphoedema was assessed by calculating the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC). Results: The validation cohort comprised 154 women, 41 of whom developed lymphoedema within 2 years of surgery. The value of Spearman's coefficient indicated a strong correlation between observed and expected cases. Sensitivity of the model was higher than in the derivation cohort, as was the value of the AUC. Conclusion: The model shows a good capacity to discriminate women at risk of lymphoedema and may therefore help in developing improved care pathways for individual patients. A code of ethics for the practice of nursing seeks to capture, in a written document, the normative values, ethical principles and standards of good care to guide nurses – qua moral agents. A codification of the accepted collective values of nursing can play a constitutional and directional role for the profession. It can further stimulate discussions about nursing that reflect the dynamic essence of the profession. Consequently, there is merit to continually reflecting on a code's function and role especially when a new or revised code is introduced to the nursing profession and the wider public such as the European Nursing Council's Code of Ethics and Conduct for European Nursing. This paper examines codes of ethics in general and the European Nursing Council Code in particular using the framework of Gaumnitz and Lere. Although the European Nursing Council Code has all the ingredients of a contemporary professional ethics code, our position is that future iterations or addenda to this Code should be aligned to the UN Sustainable Development Goals and take a more radical step in becoming an exemplar of a nursing code that can be a catalyst for the advancement of the Sustainable Development Goals. Abstract: Aim: This paper explores the concept of migrant women as used in European healthcare literature in context of pregnancy to provide a clearer understanding of the concept for use in research and service delivery. Methods: Walker and Avant's method of concept analysis. Results: The literature demonstrates ambiguity around the concept; most papers do not provide an explicit or detailed definition of the concept. They include the basic idea that women have moved from an identifiable region/country to the country in which the research is undertaken but fail to acknowledge adequately the heterogeneity of migrant women. The paper provides a definition of the concept as a descriptive theory and argues that research must include a clear definition of the migrant specific demographics of the women. This should include country/region of origin and host, status within the legal system of host country, type of migration experience, and length of residence. Conclusion: There is a need for a more systematic conceptualization of the idea of migrant women within European literature related to pregnancy experiences and outcomes to reflect the heterogeneity of this concept. Aim: This paper introduces the study on the European Union Project on complementary therapies and discusses project outputs and results. The goal of the European Union Project was to improve the professional knowledge and skills of women's health and oncology nurses regarding CT. Background: The increasing and widespread use of complementary therapies in the women's health and oncology population requires nurses to be educated about their suitable and safe use. Many nurses do not have proper training in complementary therapies and therefore should not inform their patients about them. Methods: The 'Improving the Nursing Care with Best Complementary Therapy Strategies Based on European Union Standards' (BestCARE) project was a strategic partnership within Erasmus plus for vocational education and training. The BestCARE project was coordinated by the Akdeniz University Nursing Faculty and was carried out with six partners from Turkey and Europe. Results: Fifteen nurses from Turkey and Italy were trained in complementary therapies in England. In addition, training courses and seminars were held in Turkey and Italy for women's health and oncology nurses. The BestCARE programme consisted of 14 work packages. The BestCARE programme was implemented via websites, an e‐learning training programme, training videos, reference and handbook, a curriculum proposal on complementary therapies and a simulation laboratory. Conclusion and implications for nursing and/or health policy: The BestCARE project allowed nurses to gain knowledge, experience and skills about complementary therapies and created a cultural awareness and sensitivity towards patients, caregivers and health professionals. Aims and objectives The aim of the Paediatric International Nursing Study was to explore the utility of key performance indicators in developing person-centred practice across a range of services provided to sick children. The objective addressed in this paper was evaluating the use of these indicators to benchmark services internationally. Background This study builds on primary research, which produced indicators that were considered novel both in terms of their positive orientation and use in generating data that privileges the patient voice. This study extends this research through wider testing on an international platform within paediatrics. Design The overall methodological approach was a realistic evaluation used to evaluate the implementation of the key performance indicators, which combined an integrated development and evaluation methodology. Methods The study involved children's wards/hospitals in Australia (six sites across three states) and Europe (seven sites across four countries). Qualitative and quantitative methods were used during the implementation process, however, this paper reports the quantitative data only, which used survey, observations and documentary review. Results The findings demonstrate the quality of care being delivered to children and their families across different international sites. The benchmarking does, however, highlight some differences between paediatric and general hospitals, and between the different key performance indicators across all the sites. Conclusions The findings support the use of the key performance indicators as a novel method to benchmark services internationally. Whilst the data collected across 20 paediatric sites suggest services are more similar than different, benchmarking illuminates variations that encourage a critical dialogue about what works and why. Relevance to clinical practice The transferability of the key performance indicators and measurement framework across different settings has significant implications for practice. The findings offer an approach to benchmarking and celebrating the successes within practice, while learning from partners across the globe in further developing person-centred cultures. Purpose: This discussion paper aims to explore the need of a clarified definition of master's level mental health nursing competencies in terms of knowledge, skills and attitudes in a European context. Mental health service users have, in spite of their right to equal overall health, higher rates of physical illness and are more likely to experience premature death than the general population. Implementation of a holistic concept of health comprising mental, physical and social aspects of health in mental health services has previously proved to be challenging. Methods: Master's level mental health nursing competencies in recent literature are discussed and illuminated in terms of knowledge, skills and attitudes in order to enable the promotion of equal overall health among service users in mental health services. Results: The discussion show contents, values and utility of master's level mental health nursing competencies in mental health services and contribute to reduced role ambiguity by distinguishing master's level responsibilities from undergraduate nursing tasks and obligations of other professionals in mental health care. Introduction: Nurse education in Europe differs between countries and usually adapts to the changes in clinical practice and the needs of society.1 Transformation and adaptation have been especially noticeable in the last decade because development of medical sciences and advances in technology have significantly changed clinical practice. It's completely clear that these changes lead to the alterations, expanded demands and challenges in nursing practice.2 Those challenges demand certain changes in the systems of education, continuous improvement and vocational training of nurses. Therefore, development of specific educational program for cardiac nurses is needed to answer the needs of modern society, as well as follow the trend in developed countries where specialized nursing professions have been created. Occupational standard that contains the key information on the defining occupational properties, employer needs and workplace specifics will form the basis for development of quality educational programs. This paper will show the results of the Survey on cardiovascular nursing occupational standard. Methods: The data has been collected in the organizations that employ workers in the afore-mentioned occupation, the attributes of the described workplace, needed education, key jobs that workers on those workplaces perform, and the skills and knowledge needed for practice. The survey also collected information on the needed level of development of key competencies for lifelong learning, needs for specific generic skills, psycho-motoric capabilities and working conditions. Results: Survey on cardiovascular nursing occupational standard was conducted in Croatia during 2018. Research processed answers of 41 representatives of employers that mostly belong to the group of large employers. The jobs that the participants indicated as key in the occupation cardiac nurse can be summed in 28 job groups. Jobs that were mostly specified were conduction of diagnostictherapeutic procedures, nursing care, educating patients and families, administering therapy, monitoring of patient status and administration. Knowledge and skills needed to work in the career of a cardiac nurse have been categorized in a total of 72 groups that include generic skills and personality traits. The employers mostly cite that workers should know the process of nursing, communication skills, conducting treatments, monitoring of patient state, education of staff, education of patient, know cardiovascular diseases and possess good communication skills. Most needed key competencies for life-long learning, according to the employer's assessment, are oral communication in Croatian language, willingness to learn, written communication in Croatian language, having initiative and willingness to act. From the offered generic skills, the employers found responsibility, team work, focusing on patient needs and empathy to be crucial. From the psychophysical skills, the employers found the time of reaction and maintaining focus to be the most important. According to the employer's assessment for the cardiac nurse occupation the most suitable level of qualification according to the Croatian qualification framework, which would comprise of university graduate studies or specialist graduate technical studies. Conclusion: Cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of mortality in European countries, which has led to a renewed interest in developing specialized nursing education that is needed to bring forward the full potential of nurses that work in cardiovascular treatment centers. Background Despite missing theoretical clarity, quality of life (Qol) has become a major concept as outcome in intervention studies in dementia research. There is no generally accepted definition of Qol for people with dementia. Lawton's model (1991), which includes subjective and objective components, is widely used as framework for the development of Qol measurements and interventions. The aim of the study is the identification of factors that affect dementia-specific quality of life (Qol). Material and methods The meta-synthesis (PROSPERO 2013:CRD 42013005014) followed four methodological steps: (a) database search without time limit including forward and backward citation tracking, (b) data extraction, (c) quality appraisal using formal criteria from the Critical Appraisal Skills Programme, (d) synthesis of findings based on principles and procedures of grounded theory. In particular, the constant comparative method leads the coding, identification of categories and synthesis. Two independent reviewers carried out all four methodological steps. Results The literature search and removal of duplicates revealed 3475 abstracts; 63 full texts were screened for eligibility. Eleven studies from seven countries, published between 1996 and 2011, were included. The papers comprised reports on the perspectives of 410 people with dementia in all stages of dementia on their Qol. The studies were based on narrative and semi-structured interviews and focus group interviews, the latter partly supported by music and art therapy. Conclusions The meta-synthesis will contribute to the theoretical development of the concept of Qol of people with dementia. The resulting model of factors which affect dementia-specific Qol will provide a framework for the development, adaption and validation of dementia-specific Qol measurements and development of psycho-social nursing interventions.
