Abstract Mega nourishments are a novel approach to stimulating coastal safety and resilience. Mega nourishments are intended to spread along the coast on a decadal time scale by natural sediment transport processes with a minimum of intrusion into the natural coastal system. The supratidal morphodynamic behaviour of mega nourishments is not well understood due to complexities introduced by limitations in sediment availability to aeolian sediment transport. Consequently, the effectiveness of mega nourishments to stimulate coastal safety and to influence coastal landscape and habitat development remains unknown. In this paper we present a detailed 4-year hindcast of the morphological development of the Sand Motor mega nourishment in The Netherlands. We use the aeolian sediment transport and availability model AeoLiS that focuses specifically on the simulation of spatiotemporal variations in sediment availability. The model includes the recurrence relation between sediment availability and aeolian sediment transport through self-grading and beach armoring. We show that the model is able to reproduce multi-annual aeolian sediment transport rates in the Sand Motor domain in the four years after its construction. The RMSE is 3 ⋅ 10 4 m 3 (7% of the total sediment accumulation) and R 2 is 0.93 when comparing timeseries of total sediment accumulation in the dunes, dune lake and lagoon. The combination of spatial and temporal variations in aeolian sediment availability, due to the combined influence of soil moisture, sediment sorting and beach armoring, is essential for an accurate estimate of the total sedimentation volume. The simulated feedback between aeolian sediment availability and transport is required for accurately describing compartmentalization of the beach and locating the aeolian sediment source areas in the Sand Motor domain. Abstract Quantifying flow resistance and sediment transport rates in steep streams is important for flood and debris flow prediction, habitat restoration, and predicting how mountainous landscapes evolve. However, most studies have focused on low gradient rivers and the application of this work is uncertain for steep mountain streams where surface flows are shallow and rough, subsurface flows are not negligible, and there is form-drag from bed- and channel-forms that differs from those in low gradient rivers. To evaluate flow resistance relations and sediment transport rates for steep channel beds, experiments were conducted using a range of water discharges and sediment transport rates in a 12 m long recirculating flume with bed slopes of 10%, 20%, and 30%, and a bed of nearly uniform natural gravel. Flow resistance for planar beds and beds that developed bedforms match empirical models that account for bedload-dependent roughness. Some bedforms were atypical for natural rivers at these bed slopes, such as stepped alternate bars and upstream migrating alternate bars. Total flow resistance increased with decreasing particle submergence and energetic sediment transport and drag on bedforms. Using linear stress partitioning to calculate bed stresses due to grain resistance alone, sediment flux relations developed for lower gradient rivers perform well overall, but they overestimate fluxes at 20% and 30% gradients. Based on previous theory, mass failure of the bed, which did not occur, was predicted for the highest Shields stresses investigated at 20% and 30% bed slopes; instead a concentrated layer, four to ten particle diameters deep, of highly concentrated granular sheetflow was observed. Sediment transport and soil erosion can be determined by a variety of field and modelling approaches. Computer based soil erosion and landscape evolution models (LEMs) offer the potential to be reliable assessment and prediction tools. An advantage of such models is that they provide both erosion and deposition patterns as well as total catchment sediment output. However, before use, like all models they require calibration and validation. In recent years LEMs have been used for a variety of both natural and disturbed landscape assessment. However, these models have not been evaluated for their reliability in steep forested catchments. Here, the SIBERIA LEM is calibrated and evaluated for its reliability for two steep forested catchments in south-eastern Australia. The model is independently calibrated using two methods. Firstly, hydrology and sediment transport parameters are inferred from catchment geomorphology and soil properties and secondly from catchment sediment transport and discharge data. The results demonstrate that both calibration methods provide similar parameters and reliable modelled sediment transport output. A sensitivity study of the input parameters demonstrates the model’s sensitivity to correct parameterisation and also how the model could be used to assess potential timber harvesting as well as the removal of vegetation by fire. Changes in land use can affect local geomorphology and sediment dynamics. However, these impacts could conceivably lead to changes in geomorphological processes beyond the area of land use change, thereby evidencing a geomorphic connectivity in the landscape. We conduct a numerical modelling experiment, using the CAESAR landscape evolution model, to investigate the extent and nature of such connectivity in the River Swale basin. Six simulations are run and analysed. Two of these are reference simulations, where the basin has a hypothetical total grassland cover or total forest cover. In the other four simulations, half of the basin is subjected to either deforestation or reforestation during the simulation. Simulations are analysed for temporal trends in sediment yield and for spatial trends in erosion and deposition across the basin. Results show that deforestation or reforestation in one half of the basin can indeed affect the geomorphology of the other half, thus implying a geomorphological connectivity across the basin. This connectivity is locally very high, with significant morphological impacts close to where de- or re-forestation occurs. Changes are observed both downstream and upstream of the areas where the land use changes occurred. The impacts are more pronounced in the downstream direction and are still apparent in the basin scale sediment yields, as deforestation of half the basin can increase decadal sediment yields by over 100%, whilst reforestation of half the basin can lead to 40% decreases. However, our results also indicate a reverse connectivity whereby erosion and deposition in upstream headwaters and tributaries can, for the first time, be conclusively attributed to land use changes several kilometres downstream, due to alterations in the valley floor base level resulting from incision and alluviation. In the face of rapid climate warming, rapid glacier recession should lead to a marked increase in the spatial extent of the paraglacial zone in glaciated drainage basins. The extent of the paraglacial zone has been well established to be transient but there are very few studies of this transient response and what it means for sediment export. There is good reason to expect that glacier recession could increase basin-scale sediment connectivity as: sediment becomes less dependent on glacier surface transport; proglacial streams are more able to migrate laterally than subglacial streams and so access sediment for transport; and glacier debuttressing may aid the development of gullies that can dissect moraines and so aid hillslope to proglacial zone connectivity. By using records of the flushing of hydroelectric power installations we were able to develop a record of coarse sediment (sand and gravel) export from a basin with a rapidly retreating valley glacier, the Haut Glacier d'Arolla, from 1977 to 2014. Modelling suggested that these data could only be partially controlled by transport capacity implying an important role for sediment supply and potentially for the influence of changing sediment connectivity. Indeed, there was evidence of the effects of glacial debuttressing upon gullying processes and hence a possible increase in the ease of connection of upstream basins to the proglacial area. More recently, we were able to show possible temperature control on sediment export, which may only have become apparent because of the progressive development of better sediment connectivity. However, whilst rapid glacier recession should result in theory in a progressive increase in connectivity of sediment sources to the basin outlet, the supply to capacity ratio does not increase continually with glacier recession until maximum capacity is reached. We identified two possible examples of why. First, gullying was also accompanied by the sediment accumulation at the base of moraines that was too coarse to be transported by the proglacial stream, maintaining disconnection of the upper basins. Second, the sediment capacity ratio appeared to be elevated during periods of more rapid retreat and we attribute this to the importance of a continued supply of unworked glacial till before fluvial reworking and sorting of freshly exposed sediment increased the resistance of sediment to entrainment and hence export rates. Thus, the transient geomorphic response of glaciated basins to glacier recession may involve negative feedbacks that can reduce the extent to which increases in connectivity elsewhere in the basin lead to increased sediment export. Landscape evolution models typically parse the environment into different process domains, each with its own sediment transport law: e.g., soil creep, landslides and debris flows, and river bed-load and suspended-sediment transport. Sediment transport in all environments, however, contains many of the same physical ingredients, albeit in varying proportions: grain entrainment due to a shear force, that is a combination of fluid flow, particle-particle friction and gravity. We present a new take on the perspective originally advanced by Bagnold, that views the long profile of a hillsope-river-shelf system as a continuous gradient of decreasing granular friction dominance and increasing fluid drag dominance on transport capacity. Recent advances in understanding the behavior and regime transitions of dense granular systems suggest that the entire span of granular-to-fluid regimes may be accommodated by a single-phase rheology. This model predicts a material-flow effective friction (or viscosity) that changes with the degree of shear rate and confining pressure. We present experimental results confirming that fluid-driven sediment transport follows this same rheology, for bed and suspended load. Surprisingly, below the apparent threshold of motion we observe that sediment particles creep, in a manner characteristic of glassy systems. We argue that this mechanism is relevant for both hillslopes and rivers. We discuss the possibilities of unifying sediment transport across environments and disciplines, and the potential consequences for modeling landscape evolution. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Computer based landscape evolution models can provide insight into both erosion rates and processes (i.e. sheetwash, rill, gully erosion). One important data requirement of these models is long term, high quality, high-temporal resolution rainfall data (given that the physical nature of the erosion process is strongly related to rainfall). However, in many cases such data is limited - data is often short, incomplete or not of a sufficient temporal resolution. Therefore, the aim of this study was to test the sensitivity of modelled erosion rates to small changes in rainfall input. To achieve this we firstly assess the existing rainfall data from an established weather station and secondly, stochastically generate rainfall time series based on the longest and most reliable rainfall data. We then test the sensitivity of different rainfall sequences on sediment output using a well-tested landscape evolution and sediment transport model (CAESAR-Lisflood) over a simulated period of 100 y on a proposed rehabilitated mine landform. It was found that each rainfall scenario produces a unique pattern of erosion (i.e. the location and extent of the gullies is variable). Further, each rainfall scenario produces a unique pattern of sediment output that suggests non-linear processes. Importantly, this is the first time stochastically generated rainfall has been employed in landform evolution modeling and provides a statistical approach to quantify sediment transport and landform evolution. The method demonstrates a risk based approach and allows rainfall, runoff and sediment transport studies to be conducted in data poor environments. The findings clearly demonstrate that rainfall variability can greatly affect sediment transport and form of erosion as well as landscape evolution. A new modeling platform was developed to simulate spatially distributed sediment production and transport in agricultural landscapes. The sediment production at the grid scale was computed using the stand-alone Water Erosion Prediction Project-Hillslope Erosion code, while an advection-dispersion equation represented sediment transport. The model's performance was tested in the Water Resources and Erosion watersheds at the Oklahoma and Central Plains Agricultural Research Center, El Reno, OK, USA. Results showed that this modeling approach could capture the complex behavior of sediment under different management practices in the watersheds. The modeling framework provides mechanistic processes to simulate the fate and transport of sediment across the watershed at spatio-temporal scales that are useful in assessing the environmental impacts of management schemes. Data from field plots describing how new surfaces evolve in the first few years post-construction are scarce in the literature. Here we examine sediment output from four similar 30 m by 30 m plots on a rehabilitated mine site over a six year period. Field measurements from the trial plots found that there is an initial high pulse of sediment over the first three years which rapidly reduces to rates similar to that expected for a natural or undisturbed surface. At 6 years the sediment output is equivalent to that expected from the surrounding undisturbed landscape. This plot data was compared to predictions from a calibrated landscape evolution model. The landscape evolution model used two sets of parameters, one derived from bare waste rock and one derived from an older vegetated surface. The simulations using bare waste parameters produced sediment output that matched the plot data in the first few years while the vegetated parameters produced sediment output which compared well with the field plot data at times > 3 years. The results demonstrate that when correctly calibrated the landscape evolution model is able to reliably predict sediment output from these field plots. These results suggest that there is the potential to employ the bare waste rock dump parameters for the first 3–4 years then switch to vegetated parameters for the longer term modelling. Both the field plots and landscape evolution model simulations displayed considerable annual variability in total load. This variability is the result of different surface structure from imposed surface roughness (ripping by a bulldozer) and their unique topographic structure. Degradation in the landscape results when the interactions of climate, substrate, and biota dislodge and transport sediment that is mantling landforms. Rates of degradation through time control landform stability and resiliency. Therefore, records of past degradation rates can be used to inform us on how a given landscape responded to significant changes in past climates. For example, climate has varied at many temporal scales, and some of the largest recent shifts enabled the glacial advances and retreats in time scales of 20–100 ka. Therefore, it is reasonable to expect that the rate of landscape degradation has also varied at similar time scales. However, the general hillslope diffusion equation that is commonly used to model cross-profiles of hillslopes on time scales of thousands to tens of thousands of years typically relies on a constant and optimized rate parameter to generate a model cross-profile approximating the current observed landform cross-profile. Using a time-varying diffusivity parameter, we generated three separate degradation scenarios for the Mono Basin moraine in the eastern Sierra Nevada, CA, USA, in order to assess the potential impact of varying past climates on sediment transport. We used published paleoclimate records in the study area and modern rates of surface degradation from climates that correspond broadly to those paleoclimates. The results indicate that, in this case, the climate driven and, therefore, time-dependent degradation model produces a good fit between the modeled and observed landform profiles. Results showed that, when the surface elevations of the reference case (constant optimized diffusivity) were compared through time to the surface elevations of the time-dependent model, the differences were relatively small. The largest deviation was found to occur during the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM). We found that for investigations into the geological effects of climate change in glacial and polar regions, the use of time-varying diffusivity offers improved estimates of landform degradation through time. The rates of surface lowering that change through time are important for analyses of the depths of past exposures, exposure dating, and renewal or preservation of surfaces, all of which are relevant in landscape dating, in interpretation of paleoecology, and in modeling landscape evolution. A dynamic landscape evolution modelling platform (CLiDE) is presented that allows a variety of Earth system interactions to be explored under differing environmental forcing factors. Representation of distributed surface and subsurface hydrology within CLiDE is suited to simulation at sub-annual to centennial time-scales. In this study the hydrological components of CLiDE are evaluated against analytical solutions and recorded datasets. The impact of differing groundwater regimes on sediment discharge is examined for a simple, idealised catchment, Sediment discharge is found to be a function of the evolving catchment morphology. Application of CLiDE to the upper Eden Valley catchment, UK, suggests the addition of baseflow-return from groundwater into the fluvial system modifies the total catchment sediment discharge and the spatio-temporal distribution of sediment fluxes during storm events. Tsunamis transport large amounts of sediment and can leave recognisable signatures in the landscape. The form and composition of onshore tsunami deposits are a function of wave dynamics, sediment availability and characteristics of the local environment, the latter of which also partially controls preservation of the deposit. This research reviews these relationships in a global context and assesses the connection between tsunami deposit particle size and four controlling parameters: climate (temperature and rainfall), density of tsunami sediments, degree of coastal protection and distance between tsunami source and sediment deposition. An international dataset of tsunami deposit locations and texture was compiled from published literature and existing databases. Values for environmental variables were calculated for each location from global datasets of temperature, rainfall, coastline shape and tsunami source locations. Spearman's rank-order correlation, Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and hierarchical Cluster Analysis (CA) were used to analyse relationships between these variables. PCA results show an inverse relationship between particle size and sediment density, climate variables and distance from source. CA results support this, suggesting a cluster structure controlled primarily by particle size and secondly by climate and sediment density. These relationships can be explained by the influence of the environment on antecedent morphology and the composition of sediments available for tsunami transport. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

An important part of planning for the rehabilitation of a mine site is the design of stable final landforms for waste rock dumps or spoil piles. Whilst able to be assessed over the short-term (years to decades), the longer term behaviour (centuries to millennia) of such landscapes is not within any meaningful human time frame of observation. Predictive numerical models, therefore, form an important tool with which current landscape behaviour and longer term trajectory can be assessed. However, an important issue associated with the use of models is the ability to assess the reliability and accuracy of the model. Here the SIBERIA and CAESAR-Lisflood Landscape Evolution Models (LEMs) are used to simulate and assess the geomorphic stability of a conceptual rehabilitated landform of the Ranger uranium mine in the Northern Territory, Australia, for a simulated period of up to 1000 years. Utilising both models in this study enabled an independent assessment of likely landscape processes and evolution as well as each model. Results show that SIBERIA and CAESAR-Lisflood produce erosion rates and patterns that are broadly similar. At millennial time scales, short-term processes such as gullying appear to be the dominant erosion features in the proposed landforms and may produce substantial erosion in terms of size and amount of hillslope material eroded and transported downslope. The Jinsha River, the upper reaches of the Yangtze River, winds and incises through the eastern margin of the Tibetan Plateau, where Asian monsoon climate prevails. Along the Jinsha River, extensive and thick Quaternary valley fillings and multiple river terraces have been developed. However, their specific relations to climate change and tectonics remain elusive. In this study, we conducted field investigation, chronological studies and numerical modeling in its lower reaches. Our study indicates that the extensive valley fillings in the Wudongde-Menggu segment were formed in cold-arid climate with Optically Stimulated Luminescence (OSL) ages of ~23–19 ka B.P., coinciding with the timing of the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM). We suggest that the post-LGM warming and humidifying, by restrained sediment supply while enhanced discharge, switched the valley from prevailing aggradation into incision. Multiple subsequent fill-cut terraces, postdating the LGM, were formed and nested in the valley fillings. OSL data indicate that sediments of three terraces (T1–T3) were formed at ~10 ka B.P., ~11.5–12.5 ka B.P. and ~13.5 ka B.P., respectively. Our study suggests that these terraces are sensitive records of millennial and sub-millennial cold-arid climate perturbations superimposed over the post-LGM deglaciation. Our modeling highlights a high sensitivity of valley aggradation and incision to cold-arid and warm-wet climate change, as well as a fast valley landscape response in the Jinsha River characterized by high sediment transport influx. We propose that valley landscape and terraces serve as a timely record for climate change in certain rivers with short response time threshold characterized by high sediment transport influx. • Valley filling was driven by the cold-arid climate in the LGM. • Fill-cut terraces record sub-millennial cold-arid climate perturbations. • Modeling supports a sensitive and fast response of Jinsha River to climate change. • The present valley landscape remains in a transient adjustment since the LGM. The concept of the geomorphic cycle is a foundational principle in geology and geomorphology, but the topographic evolution of a single landscape from inception to maturity has been difficult to demonstrate in nature. The onlapping dunes of the Cooloola Sand Mass (CSM) in eastern Australia provide an ideal chronosequence to evaluate landscape evolution. Here commonly assumed properties on which landscape models are based (i.e., conservation of mass and major factors contributing to landscape change) can be physically measured and accounted for. Our field based measurements and forward numerical models demonstrate that dunes, like other landscapes, relax in an exponential manner. The emplaced dunes evolve through an initial phase of rapid topographic adjustment associated with the dominance of landsliding. This phase continues for ∼1 kyr until hillslope gradients are lowered below their angle of repose (0.65 m m−1 or 33°). Once sufficiently lowered, the dunes evolve through slow, soil creep processes. These findings of dual transport regimes are validated by stratigraphic records at all excavated dune foot-slopes and we propose that this evolution can be measured by the distribution of curvature (C) of a landform, specifically its standard deviation (σ C), as a measure of surface roughness. Surface roughness smooths with time through diffusional sediment transport that lowers local relief. The value and its rate of smoothing can define the stage in evolutionary development and help infer processes, which makes it an important morphometric tool for understanding landscapes. These observations highlight that under stable evolutionary conditions, the development of the landscape is governed by the physical properties of the dune's parent material. Catchment hydro-morphological response is mainly conditioned on rainfall properties, such as rainfall intensity, storm duration and frequency, and the timing of these events. Rainfall spatial variability is likewise a major determinant affecting streamflow, erosion, and sediment transport, and is explored largely in the context of heavy rain triggering floods and fast morphological changes on hillslopes and in channels. In this study, we examine how the spatial structure of rainfall influences landscape evolution at the catchment scale over hundreds of years. To achieve this, multiple realizations of hourly rainfall fields, each differing only by their spatial distribution but identical in all other respects, were simulated using a weather generator. The impact of storm spatial-heterogeneity on the catchment morphology was then assessed with a landscape evolution model (CAESAR-Lisflood). A virtual "open-book" type catchment was used for this numerical experiment. The mean streamflow and low-flows remained the same while the magnitude of the annual peak streamflow increased by up to 12% in response to higher rainfall spatial heterogeneity. However, the erosion and deposition rates significantly increased (up to 50%) and the net erosion and deposition areas changed (increased by up to 9% and decreased by 13.5%, respectively) when the rain became less uniform in space. Furthermore, new gullies were found to be longer, deeper, and more branched in response to increased rainfall heterogeneity. The results suggest that heterogeneity in rainfall spatial patterns speeds up landscape development, even when rainfall volumes and temporal structures are the same. The Salt River and Verde River watersheds provide downstream metropolitan Phoenix, Arizona, USA with much of its water supply, and this paper explains how these rivers integrated in an extensional tectonic setting. Near the end of the Pliocene, segments of the proto-Salt and proto-Verde watersheds of central Arizona consisted of local drainage networks supplying water and sediment into internally drained basins, including depressions occupied by late Pliocene natural lakes occupying the Verde Valley and Tonto basins. A key location, the lower Verde River valley (LVRV), is where the modern-day drainages of the Salt and Verde now meet downstream of these Pliocene lakes. At the time of the Nomlaki tuff deposition ~3.3 Ma, a condition of sediment overfill existed in the LVRV, although there was no exoreic drainage and a playa was still maintained. A fanglomerate unit, named here the Rolls formation, spilled over a bedrock sill and an alluvial-fan ramp transported sediment into the Higley Basin that underlies the eastern part of metropolitan Phoenix. Lithologies of preserved remnants of this Pliocene alluvial-fan system match well cuttings of buried sediment in the Higley Basin with a cosmogenic burial isochron age of 3.90 ± 0.70 Ma. Based on cosmogenic burial isochron ages, ancestral Salt River gravels started depositing on top of this fan ramp between 2.8 and 2.2 Ma. Deposition of Salt and Verde river gravels in the Higley Basin continued for ~2 million years and eventually led to an aggradational piracy event that overtopped a bedrock ridge immediately east of Phoenix's Sky Harbor Airport. A cosmogenic burial age of 460 ± 23 ka is a rough maximum age for this river avulsion that relocated the Salt River into the Luke Basin that underlies western metropolitan Phoenix. Available chronometric data are not precise enough to determine whether the Salt River or Gila River integrated first. All of the exoreic rivers of western North America's Basin and Range Province — the lower Colorado, Gila, Rio Grande, Salt, and Verde rivers — employed lake overflow to integrate across half-graben, graben, rift and supradetachment tectonic settings. Dunes are key elements of coastal landscapes in almost every latitude. They host high levels of biodiversity and provide important benefits to society; e.g. protection against floods and erosion, or recreation. Coastal dune growth is constrained by intrinsic factors, which are critical when managing dune systems or choosing coastal dune restoration as an alternative green solution for coastal protection. Here, the evolution of a beach-dune system, characterized by a reflective coarse sandy beach and low dunes, is explored to identify the favourable and optimal conditions for dune growth in these settings. Dune growth capacity is evaluated by analysing the topographical changes observed along a coastal dune over two different temporal scales (interannual and event scale) and comparing the observations with theoretical approximations of sediment transport potentials. Observations and predictions over interannual scale document that (1) temporal variability in external conditions (wind regime) and spatial variability of estimated wind fetch length, alone, fail to explain alongshore dune growth patterns and (2) optimal conditions for dune growth occur when storms (strong winds) impact the study area, jointly with low runup levels, at zones of shoreline progradation and absence of direct human influence. Conversely, lowest values of dune accumulation are associated with areas where shoreline retreat was documented. Observations from event timescales suggest that sediment transport potential can be reached over zones with no significant signs of beach erosion, if runup levels remain low and the event duration is shorter than the time scale of sand surface depletion within the upper beach.
