Measurements with a 763 nm channel, located within the oxygen A-band and equipped on the Second-generation Global Imager (SGLI) onboard the JAXA's Global Change Observation Mission – Climate (GCOM-C) satellite, have the potential to retrieve cloud base height (CBH) and cloud geometric thickness (CGT) through passive remote sensing. This study implemented an algorithm to retrieve the CBH using the SGLI 763 nm channel in combination with several other SGLI channels in the visible, shortwave infrared, and thermal infrared regions. In addition to CBH, the algorithm can simultaneously retrieve other key cloud properties, including cloud optical thickness (COT), cloud effective radius, ice COT fraction as the cloud thermodynamic phase, cloud top height (CTH), and CGT. Moreover, the algorithm can be seamlessly applied to global clouds comprised of liquid, ice, and mixed phases. The SGLI-retrieved CBH exhibited quantitative consistency with CBH data obtained from the ground-based ceilometer network, ship-borne ceilometer, satellite-borne radar and lidar observations, as evidenced by sufficiently high correlations and small biases. These results provide practical evidence that the retrieval of CBH is indeed possible using the SGLI 763 nm channel. Moreover, the results lend credence to the future use of SGLI CBH data, including the estimation of the surface downward longwave radiative flux from clouds. Nevertheless, issues remain that must be addressed to enhance the value of SGLI-derived cloud retrieval products. Satellite radar backscatter contains unique information on land surface moisture, vegetation features, and surface roughness and has thus been used in a range of Earth science disciplines. However, there is no single global radar data set that has a relatively long wavelength and a decades-long time span. We here provide the first long-term (since 1992), high-resolution (∼8.9 km instead of the commonly used ∼25 km resolution) monthly satellite radar backscatter data set over global land areas, called the long-term, high-resolution scatterometer (LHScat) data set, by fusing signals from the European Remote Sensing satellite (ERS; 1992–2001; C-band; 5.3 GHz), Quick Scatterometer (QSCAT, 1999–2009; Ku-band; 13.4 GHz), and the Advanced SCATterometer (ASCAT; since 2007; C-band; 5.255 GHz). The 6-year data gap between C-band ERS and ASCAT was filled by modelling a substitute C-band signal during 1999–2009 from Ku-band QSCAT signals and climatic information. To this end, we first rescaled the signals from different sensors, pixel by pixel. We then corrected the monthly signal differences between the C-band and the scaled Ku-band signals by modelling the signal differences from climatic variables (i.e. monthly precipitation, skin temperature, and snow depth) using decision tree regression. The quality of the merged radar signal was assessed by computing the Pearson r , root mean square error (RMSE), and relative RMSE (rRMSE) between the C-band and the corrected Ku-band signals in the overlapping years (1999–2001 and 2007–2009). We obtained high Pearson r values and low RMSE values at both the regional (r≥0.92 , RMSE ≤ 0.11 dB, and rRMSE ≤ 0.38) and pixel levels (median r across pixels ≥ 0.64, median RMSE ≤ 0.34 dB, and median rRMSE ≤ 0.88), suggesting high accuracy for the data-merging procedure. The merged radar signals were then validated against the European Space Agency (ESA) ERS-2 data, which provide observations for a subset of global pixels until 2011, even after the failure of on-board gyroscopes in 2001. We found highly concordant monthly dynamics between the merged radar signals and the ESA ERS-2 signals, with regional Pearson r values ranging from 0.79 to 0.98. These results showed that our merged radar data have a consistent C-band signal dynamic. The LHScat data set (10.6084/m9.figshare.20407857; Tao et al., 2023) is expected to advance our understanding of the long-term changes in, e.g., global vegetation and soil moisture with a high spatial resolution. The datasets have been collected at five different sites. A W-band Doppler cloud profiler and a multi-angle snowflake camera (MASC) have been deployed in the immediate proximity of the main building of the station. An X-band dual-polarization Doppler scanning weather radar was installed 1.9 km southeast of PEA. Information on the various hydrometeor types have been derived from its measurements and from the images collected by the MASC. The remaining three sites were located in a transect across the mountain chain south of the base, between 7 and 17 km apart from each other. At each site, a K-band Doppler profiler and an automated weather station have been deployed. A pyrgeometer and a pyranometer accompanied the instruments at the site in the middle of the transect. The radar variables and the measurements collected by the weather stations and radiometers are available at 10.5281/zenodo.7428690. Dual-wavelength (3.2 and 0.32 cm , i.e., X- and W-radar bands) radar ratio (DWR) measurements in ice clouds and precipitation using Canada's National Research Council Institute for Aerospace Research airborne radar are compared to closely collocated particle microphysical in situ sampling data in order to develop relations between DWR and characteristic hydrometeor size. This study uses the radar and in situ data sets collected during the In-Cloud ICing and Large-drop Experiment (ICICLE) campaign in midlatitude frontal clouds. Since atmospheric particle scattering at X band is predominantly in the Rayleigh regime and the W-band frequency is the highest frequency usually used for hydrometeor remote sensing, the X–W-band combination provides a relatively strong dual-wavelength reflectivity difference. This study considers radar and in situ measurements conducted in relatively homogeneous cloud and precipitation conditions. Measurements show that under these conditions, the difference between the X-band radar reflectivities observed with vertical and horizontal pointing of the radar beam are generally small and often negligible. However, W-band reflectivities at vertical beam pointing are, on average, larger than those for horizontal beam pointing by about 4 dB , which is a non-Rayleigh scattering effect from preferentially oriented non-spherical particles. A horizontal radar beam DWR–mean volume particle size relation, Dv , provides robust estimates of this characteristic size for populations of particles with different habits. Uncertainties of Dv retrievals using DWR are around 0.6 mm when Dv is greater than approximately 1 mm. Size estimates using vertical radar beam DWRs have larger uncertainties due to smaller dual-wavelength signals and stronger influences of hydrometeor habits and orientations at this geometry of beam pointing. Mean relations among different characteristic sizes, which describe the entire particle size distribution (PSD), such as Dv , and other sizes used in various applications (e.g., the mean, effective, and median sizes) are derived, so the results of this study can be used for estimating different PSD characteristic sizes. However, there is no single global radar data set that spans more than two decades. This has limited the use of radar data for trend analysis over extended time intervals. We here provide the first long-term (since 1992), high resolution (~8.9 km) satellite radar backscatter data set over global land areas, the C-band Scatterometer (CScat) data set, by fusing signals from European Remote Sensing satellite (ERS, 1992-2001, C-band, 5.3 GHz), Quick Scatterometer (QSCAT, 1999-2009, Ku-band, 13.4 GHz), and the Advanced Scatterometer (ASCAT, since 2007, C-band, 5.255 GHz). The six-year data gap between C-band ERS and ASCAT was filled out by modelling an equivalent C-band signal during 1999-2009 from Ku-band QSCAT signals and climatic information. Towards this purpose, we first rescaled the signals from different sensors, pixel by pixel, using a new signal rescaling method that is robust to limited overlapping observations among sensors. We then corrected the monthly signal differences between the C-band and the scaled Ku-band signals, by modelling the signal differences from climatic variables (i.e., monthly precipitation, skin temperature, and snow depth) using decision tree regression. The quality of the merged radar signal was assessed by computing the Pearson r, Root Mean Square Error (RMSE), and relative RMSE (rRMSE) between the C-band and the corrected Ku-band signals in the overlapping years (1999-2001 and 2007-2009). We obtained high Pearson r values and low RMSE values at both the regional (r ≥ 0.93, RMSE ≤ 0.16, rRMSE ≤0.37) and pixel levels (median r across pixels ≥ 0.80, median RMSE ≤ 0.38, median rRMSE ≤ 0.64), suggesting high accuracy for the data merging procedure. The merged radar signal was then validated with a continuous ERS-2 data set available between 1995 and 2011. ERS-stopped working in full mode after 2001 but observations are occasionally available for a subset of the pixels until 2011. Because the period of 1995-2011 fully overlaps with the working period of QSCAT (1999-2009), comparing the merged radar signal against the ERS-2 data in 1995-2011 is the most direct validation available. We found concordant monthly dynamics between the merged radar signals and the ERS-2 signals during 1995-2011, with Pearson r value ranging from 0.79 to 0.98 across regions. Ground-based remote sensing of atmospheric parameters is often limited to single station observations by vertical profiles at a certain geographic location. This is a limiting factor for investigating gravity wave dynamics as the spatial information is often missing, e.g., horizontal wavelength, propagation direction or intrinsic frequency. In this study, we present a new retrieval algorithm for multistatic meteor radar networks to obtain tomographic 3-D wind fields within a pre-defined domain area. The algorithm is part of the Agile Software for Gravity wAve Regional Dynamics (ASGARD) and called 3D-Var, and based on the optimal estimation technique and Bayesian statistics. The performance of the 3D-Var retrieval is demonstrated using two meteor radar networks: the Nordic Meteor Radar Cluster and the Chilean Observation Network De Meteor Radars (CONDOR). The optimal estimation implementation provide statistically sound solutions and diagnostics from the averaging kernels and measurement response. We present initial scientific results such as body forces of breaking gravity waves leading to two counter-rotating vortices and horizontal wavelength spectra indicating a transition between the rotational k-3 and divergent k-5/3 mode at scales of 80–120 km. In addition, we performed a keogram analysis over extended periods to reflect the latitudinal and temporal impact of a minor sudden stratospheric warming in December 2019. Finally, we demonstrate the applicability of the 3D-Var algorithm to perform large-scale retrievals to derive meteorological wind maps covering a latitude region from Svalbard, north of the European Arctic mainland, to central Norway. A better understanding of the hydrological functioning of irrigated crops using remote sensing observations is of prime importance in semi-arid areas where water resources are limited. Radar observations, available at high resolution and with a high revisit time since the launch of Sentinel-1 in 2014, have shown great potential for the monitoring of the water content of the upper soil and of the canopy. In this paper, a complete set of data for radar signal analysis is shared with the scientific community for the first time to our knowledge. The data set is composed of Sentinel-1 products and in situ measurements of soil and vegetation variables collected during three agricultural seasons over drip-irrigated winter wheat in the Haouz plain in Morocco. The in situ data gather soil measurements (time series of half-hourly surface soil moisture, surface roughness and agricultural practices) and vegetation measurements collected every week/2 weeks including aboveground fresh and dry biomasses, vegetation water content based on destructive measurements, the cover fraction, the leaf area index, and plant height. Radar data are the backscattering coefficient and the interferometric coherence derived from Sentinel-1 GRDH (Ground Range Detected High Resolution) and SLC (Single Look Complex) products, respectively. The normalized difference vegetation index derived from Sentinel-2 data based on Level-2A (surface reflectance and cloud mask) atmospheric-effects-corrected products is also provided. This database, which is the first of its kind made available open access, is described here comprehensively in order to help the scientific community to evaluate and to develop new or existing remote sensing algorithms for monitoring wheat canopy under semi-arid conditions. The data set is particularly relevant for the development of radar applications including surface soil moisture and vegetation variable retrieval using either physically based or empirical approaches such as machine and deep learning algorithms. The dataset includes observations from an X-band dual-polarisation Doppler radar, a W-band Doppler cloud profiler, a multi-angle snowflake camera and a two-dimensional video disdrometer (10.1594/PANGAEA.918315,). Classifications of hydrometeor types derived from dual-polarisation measurements and snowflake photographs are presented. The dataset covers the period from 15 November 2017 to 18 March 2018 and features nine precipitation events with a total accumulation of 195 mm of equivalent liquid precipitation. This represents 85 % of the climatological accumulation over this period. To illustrate the available data, measurements corresponding to the four precipitation events with the largest accumulation are presented. The synoptic situations of these events were contrasted and influenced the precipitation type and accumulation. The hydrometeor classifications reveal that aggregate snowflakes were dominant and that some events featured significant riming. The combination of dual-polarisation variables and high-resolution Doppler spectra with ground-level snowflake images makes this dataset particularly suited to study snowfall microphysics in a region where such measurements were not available before. Remote sensing observations at sub-millimeter wavelengths provide higher sensitivity to small hydrometeors and low water content than observations at millimeter wavelengths, which are traditionally used to observe clouds and precipitation. They are employed increasingly in field campaigns to study cloud microphysics and will be integrated into the global meteorological observing system to measure the global distribution of ice in the atmosphere with the launch of the Ice Cloud Imager (ICI) radiometer on board the second generation of European operational meteorological satellites (Metop-SG). Observations at these novel wavelengths provide valuable information not only on their own but also in combination with complementary observations at other wavelengths. This study investigates the potential of combining passive sub-millimeter radiometer observations with a hypothetical W-band cloud radar for the retrieval of frozen hydrometeors. An idealized cloud model is used to investigate the information content of the combined observations and establish their capacity to constrain the microphysical properties of ice hydrometeors. A synergistic retrieval algorithm for airborne observations is proposed and applied to simulated observations from a cloud-resolving model. Results from the synergistic retrieval are compared to equivalent radar- and passive-only implementations in order to assess the benefits of the synergistic sensor configuration. The impact of the assumed ice particle shape on the retrieval results is assessed for all retrieval implementations. We find that the combined observations better constrain the microphysical properties of ice hydrometeors, which reduces uncertainties in retrieved ice water content and particle number concentrations for suitable choices of the ice particle model. Analysis of the retrieval information content shows that, although the radar contributes the largest part of the information in the combined retrieval, the radiometer observations provide complementary information over a wide range of atmospheric states. Furthermore, the combined observations yield slightly improved retrievals of liquid cloud water in mixed-phase clouds, pointing towards another potential application of combined radar–radiometer observations. This represents 85% of the climatological accumulation over this period. To illustrate the available data, measurements corresponding to the four precipitation events with the largest accumulation are presented. The synoptic situations of these events were contrasted and influenced the precipitation type and accumulation. The hydrometeor classifications reveal that aggregate snowflakes were dominant and that some events featured significant riming. The combination of dual-polarisation variables and high-resolution Doppler spectra with ground-level snowflake images makes this dataset particularly suited to study snowfall microphysics in a region where such measurements were not available before. Ground-based observatories use multi-sensor observations to characterize cloud and precipitation properties. A challenge is how to design strategies to best use these observations to understand the atmosphere and evaluate atmospheric numerical prediction models. This paper introduces the Cloud resolving model Radar SIMulator (CR-SIM), which uses output from high-resolution atmospheric models to emulate multi-wavelength, zenith-pointing, and scanning radar observables and multi-sensor (multi-radar and radar-lidar) integrated products. CR-SIM allows comparisons of the same variables between an atmospheric model simulation and remote sensing products using a forward modeling framework consistent with the microphysical assumptions used in the numerical model simulations. In this paper, we present several applications of CR-SIM for evaluation of a numerical model, quantification of retrieval uncertainty, and optimization of radar sampling strategy using observing system simulation experiments. These applications demonstrate that the application of CR-SIM as a virtual observatory operator on high-resolution model output helps interpret the differences between model results and observations and also improve under-standing of the representativeness errors due to the sampling limitations of the ground-based observatories. Wildfires are unintentional fires that damage natural environments but do also contribute to ecological sustainability. Monitoring wildfires is therefore a vital component in the management of natural ecosystems. Remote sensing techniques such as burn indices derived from optical data have been used widely to monitor wildfires. The most prevalent focus within the literature of remote sensing of wildfires is on wildfires that occur in large plant forms such as forests and savannas (e.g., Xulu et al., 2021; Shekede et al., 2021). Many studies have applied remote sensing in the mapping of wildfires in South Africa; however, most of these studies focused on the use of a ingle type of remotely sensed data, mainly optical data (e.g., Ngadze et al., 2020; Urban et al., 2020; Belenguer-Plomer et al., 2021). The use of optical data is limited to convenient seasons since technology works optimally in cloud free conditions. Cloud electrification and related lightning activity in thunderstorms have their origin in the charge separation and resulting distribution of charged iced particles within the cloud. So far, the ice distribution within convective clouds has been investigated mainly by means of ground-based meteorological radars. In this paper we show how the products from Cloud Profiling Radar (CPR) on board CloudSat, a polar satellite of NASA's Earth System Science Pathfinder (ESSP), can be used to obtain information from space on the vertical distribution of ice particles and ice content and relate them to the lightning activity. The analysis has been carried out, focusing on 12 convective events over Italy that crossed CloudSat overpasses during significant lightning activity. The CPR products considered here are the vertical profiles of cloud ice water content (IWC) and the effective radius (ER) of ice particles, which are compared with the number of strokes as measured by a ground lightning network (LINET). Results show a strong correlation between the number of strokes and the vertical distribution of ice particles as depicted by the 94 GHz CPR products: in particular, cloud upper and middle levels, high IWC content and relatively high ER seem to be favourable contributory causes for CG (cloud to ground) stroke occurrence. Within the framework of sea-level rise projections, there is a strong need for hindcast validation of the evolution of polar ice sheets in a way that tightly matches observational records (from radar, gravity, and altimetry observations mainly). However, the computational requirements for making hindcast reconstructions possible are severe and rely mainly on the evaluation of the adjoint state of transient iceflow models. Here, we look at the computation of adjoints in the context of the NASA/JPL/UCI Ice Sheet System Model (ISSM), written in C++ and designed for parallel execution with MPI.We present the adaptations required in the way the software is designed and written, but also generic adaptations in the tools facilitating the adjoint computations.We concentrate on the use of operator overloading coupled with the AdjoinableMPI library to achieve the adjoint computation of the ISSM.We present a comprehensive approach to (1) carry out type changing through the ISSM, hence facilitating operator overloading, (2) bind to external solvers such as MUMPS and GSL-LU, and (3) handle MPI-based parallelism to scale the capability. We demonstrate the success of the approach by computing sensitivities of hindcast metrics such as the misfit to observed records of surface altimetry on the northeastern Greenland Ice Stream, or the misfit to observed records of surface velocities on Upernavik Glacier, central West Greenland. We also provide metrics for the scalability of the approach, and the expected performance. This approach has the potential to enable a new generation of hindcast-validated projections that make full use of the wealth of datasets currently being collected, or already collected, in Greenland and Antarctica. The multifrequency range imaging technique (RIM) has been implemented on the Chung-Li VHF array radar since 2008 after its renovation. This study made a more complete examination and evaluation of the RIM technique to facilitate the performance of the radar for atmospheric studies. RIM experiments with various radar parameters such as pulse length, pulse shape, receiver bandwidth, transmitter frequency set, and so on were conducted. The radar data employed for the study were collected from 2008 to 2013. It has been shown that two factors, the range/time delay of the signal traveling in the media and the standard deviation of Gaussian-shaped range-weighting function, play crucial roles in ameliorating the RIM-produced brightness (or power distribution); the two factors are associated with some radar parameters and system characteristics. The range/time delay of the signal was found to increase with time; moreover, it was slightly different for the echoes from the atmosphere with and without the presence of significant precipitation. A procedure of point-by-point correction of range/time delay was thus executed for the presence of precipitation to minimize the bogus brightness discontinuity at range gate boundaries. With the RIM technique, the Chung-Li VHF radar demonstrates its first successful observation of double-layer structures as well as their temporal and spatial variations with time. A simplified approach is presented for assessing the microwave response to the initial melting of realistically shaped ice particles. This paper is divided into two parts: (1) a description of the Single Particle Melting Model (SPMM), a heuristic melting simulation for ice-phase precipitation particles of any shape or size (SPMM is applied to two simulated aggregate snow particles, simulating melting up to 0.15 melt fraction by mass), and (2) the computation of the single-particle microwave scattering and extinction properties of these hydrometeors, using the discrete dipole approximation (via DDSCAT), at the following selected frequencies: 13.4, 35.6, and 94.0 GHz for radar applications and 89, 165.0, and 183.31 GHz for radiometer applications. These selected frequencies are consistent with current microwave remote-sensing platforms, such as CloudSat and the Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) mission. Comparisons with calculations using variable-density spheres indicate significant deviations in scattering and extinction properties throughout the initial range of melting (liquid volume fractions less than 0.15). Integration of the single-particle properties over an exponential particle size distribution provides additional insight into idealized radar reflectivity and passive microwave brightness temperature sensitivity to variations in size/mass, shape, melt fraction, and particle orientation. Active remote sensing of marine boundary-layer clouds is challenging as drizzle drops often dominate the observed radar reflectivity. We present a new method to simultaneously retrieve cloud and drizzle vertical profiles in drizzling boundary-layer clouds using surface-based observations of radar reflectivity, lidar attenuated backscatter, and zenith radiances under conditions when precipitation does not reach the surface. Specifically, the vertical structure of droplet size and water content of both cloud and drizzle is characterised throughout the cloud. An ensemble optimal estimation approach provides full error statistics given the uncertainty in the observations. To evaluate the new method, we first perform retrievals using synthetic measurements from large-eddy simulation snapshots of cumulus under stratocumulus, where cloud water path is retrieved with an error of 31 gm-2. The method also performs well in non-drizzling clouds where no assumption of the cloud profile is required. We then apply the method to observations of marine stratocumulus obtained during the Atmospheric Radiation Measurement MAGIC deployment in the Northeast Pacific. Here, retrieved cloud water path agrees well with independent three channel microwave radiometer retrievals, with a root mean square difference of 10-20 gm-2. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The HYD2M project (HYDrodynamics of Raz Blanchard: Measurements and Modelling) constitutes a research program designed to study how surface waves and extreme events modify the tidal stream energy estimate, with the ultimate goal of improving such estimates. In order to achieve this goal, the project relies on a combination of models, in situ measurements, and remote sensing. The later group is represented by a pair of HF radars set to transmit at two frequencies, 13.5 MHz and 24.5 MHz, with measurements at each frequency being collected twice in each hour. In this work, the performance of HF radar in measuring the wave field and the highly energetic current of the Alderney Race (Raz Blanchard in French) is examined by comparing its results against measurements collected by a bottom-mounted ADCP deployed in the area. In addition, the spatial currents are compared against numerical results obtained with MARS3D. Discrepancies between methods increase with increasing current speeds, and in relation to the location within the radar's field of view. Over a tidal cycle, the bias between the radar and ADCP velocity estimates is 11 cm/s, while the absolute differences range between few mm/s to a maximum of 53 cm/s at the time of maximum current velocity. Similarly, inspection of the radar's wave results indicate a variation on the quality and extent of the results over the tidal cycle.
