Kara Walker is best known for her depictions of sexualized violence and gendered racism during slavery in the form of black paper silhouettes. Hundreds of photographs and videos were uploaded to social media sites with people making gestures towards the figure that some critics deemed highly inappropriate. This paper explores how A Subtlety both understands and undermines representations of Black women's bodies and how Black artists in the African diaspora contend with complex cultural signs of the past in the present. Utilizing studies of Black feminist theory and visual culture, I argue that Walker's A Subtlety – and her art more broadly – offers theoretical and geographic space to ponder where Black pleasure and collective memory can exist in systems of misogynoir, as well as in the Black nostalgic imagination. Robotic automation is proving itself indispensable in the modern Chemistry laboratory, but adoption is slowed down by the technical challenges of implementing such systems. This paper reports on a novel adaptive gripper mechanism that can easily and reliably grasp cylindrical and prismatic objects of various sizes with limited clearance required. The proposed design exploits the inherent compliance of a cable that is driven to fully envelope the target object. The cable is run through a rigid finger, allowing the loop to be placed around objects with minimal clearance required and to provide support for the object once the grip is complete. Thanks to the compliant nature of the mechanism, the gripper requires minimal control effort to complete a gasping task. A prototype of the gripper has been designed and built for chemistry automation tasks, where it showed very high grasp reliability with ≤ 1 % grasp failures. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

AbstractPurposeMaterials and methodsResultsConclusionsIndividuals with reduced vision may rely on handheld magnifiers for near reading of texts on household items such as food packaging and far reading of information notices and signposts. Smartphones have become favoured magnification devices due to their pervasiveness. Users typically take a photo of the text, view the image with magnification and explore details by panning in two-dimensions. However, two-dimensional panning is cumbersome, confusing and slow.To improve the magnification experience, we implemented a proof-of-concept magnifier that reflows text to fit the device’s viewport width. The user navigates through the text by scrolling up/down. Our implementation relies on a novel pixel-based text reflow image analysis algorithm.The prototype can successfully reflow text printed on sheets of paper such as notices. Initial tests showed that users preferred the smart digital magnifier over ordinary magnification.More work is needed to successfully handle other important use cases such as electronic information boards and household product packaging. AbstractPurposeMethodsResultsConclusions\nIMPLICATIONS FOR REHABILITATIONThe manual, user-operated Arise Standing Wheelchair (SWC) is the end result of multiple design iterations based on findings and feedback from user trials. The Arise SWC provides standing functionality, outdoor mobility, affordability, and customisability. This paper describes a long-term community integration study of the Arise SWC.All participants (N = 8; 7 Male, 1 Female) were persons with spinal cord injuries. During the study period (six months), the participants integrated the Arise SWC into their daily routines. To assess the impact of the Arise SWC on various outcome measures, participants’ responses were captured using a Likert-scale questionnaire at the beginning of the study, after 30 days, and after 180 days of Arise SWC usage.The long-term usage of the Arise SWC positively impacted the users’ standing performance (ability to stand regularly, stand at different locations, and stand in community settings), productive ability (accessibility to environmental controls and ability to perform overhead reaches), and pathophysiology (spasticity and ability to get proper sleep). Optical fiber tweezers offer a simple, low-cost and portable solution for non-invasive trapping and manipulation of particles. However, single-fiber tweezers require fiber tip modification (tapering, lensing, etc.) and the dual-fiber approach demands strict alignment and positioning of fibers for robust trapping of particles. In addition, both tweezing techniques offer a limited range of particle manipulation and operate in low flow velocity regimes (a few 100 μm s−1) when integrated with microfluidic devices. In this paper, we report a novel opto-hydrodynamic fiber tweezers (OHT) platform that exploits the balance between the hydrodynamic drag force and optical scattering forces to trap and manipulate single or multiple particles of various shapes, sizes, and material compositions in a microfluidic channel. 3D hydrodynamic flow focusing offers an easy and dynamic alignment of the particle trajectories with the optical axis of the fiber, which enables robust trapping of particles with high efficiency of >70% and throughput of 14 particles per minute (operating flow velocity: 1000 μm s−1) without the need for precision stages or complex fabrication. By regulating the optical power and flow rates, we were able to trap single particles at desired positions in the channel with a precision of ±10 μm as well as manipulate them over a long range upstream or downstream with a maximum distance of 500 μm.
