Stormwater run-off ponds have become increasingly important as "extreme precipitation events" have become more common, creating flash floods that overwhelm and overflow municipal defences, spilling toxins and filth into the local ecosystem. There's nothing controversial or terribly dramatic about the paper or the results; it's just a small study of the dragonfly and damselfly populations around Ottawa's urban stormwater catchments as compared with natural ponds in neighbouring rural areas. During the Ottawa study, the researchers found that most populations of nymph subspecies were lower near the stormwater ponds than in their natural equivalents. [Extracted from the article]
