A direct mass spectrometry method utilizing reactive paper spray ionization was developed for sensitive cannabinoid quantitation in biofluid matrices. The ca. 2-minute sample measurements used on-paper derivatization to significantly increase paper spray mass spectrometry (PS-MS) positive ion mode sensitivity while minimizing sample preparation steps. Calibrations demonstrate high linearity, with R2 > 0.99 for (−)-trans-Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) in oral fluid and 11-nor-9-carboxy-Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC-COOH) in urine. The limit of detection and lower limit of quantitation were 0.78 and 10 ng mL−1 for THC in oral fluid and 1.3 and 10 ng mL−1 for THC-COOH in urine, respectively. THC-COOH levels measured by reactive PS-MS in seven spiked human urine samples showed bias of −9.4 to 5.9%, and percent difference values of −16.8 to 9.8% in comparison with a reference LC-MS method. Based upon the method simplicity, validation experiments, sensitivity, and rapidity, we conclude that reactive PS-MS has potential applications for rapid cannabinoid drug testing in urine and oral fluid. For the first time, functionalized GQDs were synthesized and stabilized on the surface of hydrophobic fiber-glass with simple manufacturing and assembly strategy towards colorimetric chemosensing of ions including iron, copper, cobalt, mercury, chrome, manganese, and nickel. For this purpose, GQDs are functionalized by various organic species including cysteamine, decanethiol, and mercaptopropionic acid (MPA) towards specific electrostatic interaction with metal ions of Fe (II), Cu (II), Co(II), Hg (II), Mn (II), and Ni (II). Therefore, an innovative GQDs-based miniaturized chemo-system was proposed for the environmental analysis. Additionally, the results were confirmed using fluorescence spectrometry as an optical detection method. Finally, this simple and efficient colorimetric platform was used for facile metal ions detection in human urine models, and environmental fluids, which can provide a commercial device for sensing contaminants by non-professional users in biomedical/environmental mixture. As an economical technique, this platform presents a "mix-and-sense" system without dye (as a side substance) or chemical treatments. Rationale: Smoking is responsible for one in five deaths around the world. Thus, governments have been trying to reduce the number of active smokers by increasing taxes on products. This scenario creates a new problem by raising the consumption of illegally traded cigarettes, which are often seized and analyzed by police forces. Methods: Legal and illegal cigarette samples were extracted and analyzed using paper spray ionization mass spectrometry (PS-MS). The mass spectrometer was set to operate in full-scan positive ion mode to yield representative chemical profiles of each sample. The results were used to build a chemometric model using partial least squares discriminant analysis (PLS-DA) to discriminate between both sets of samples, i.e. legal and illegal. Results: The PS-MS procedure was fast, simple and efficient, yielding high-quality and reproducible mass spectra with a very good signal-to-noise ratio. Even though all samples displayed visually indistinguishable mass spectra, the PS-MS data handled by the PLS-DA approach furnished a model that reached sample classification with rates of 100% and 80% for the training and validation sets, respectively. Conclusions: A novel methodology was successfully developed associating the PSMS technique with chemometric analysis to differentiate between legal and illegal cigarettes. The PS-MS technique proved to be adequate for obtaining fingerprints of such types of samples despite high complexity, and a PLS-DA model was successfully constructed achieving 82.1% accuracy. The fluid description is widely used for the multi-dimensional modeling of low temperature plasmas with complex chemistries due to their relative low computational cost. It relies, however, on a series of simplifying assumptions and some truncation of the moment equations for describing the non-equilibrium between the electrons, positive ions, negative ions, and the neutrals. In this paper, the classical assumption of isothermal negative ions is revisited for electronegative plasmas and, more particularly, for the fluid modeling of the transition between the plasma and its sheath. To do so, and in contrast to previous studies, the energy balance equation for the negative ions is also computed, and it allows us to derive the polytropic coefficient γ of the negative ions in addition to one of the positive ions. Strong variations in the sheath and presheath of the negative ions temperature and their polytropic coefficient are observed. The polytropic coefficient is shown to be a strongly varying function of space having for consequence that the negative ions are isothermal only in a very narrow extension of the presheath. For the case considered in this paper, both positive and negative ion flows are nearly adiabatic at the sheath-edge and become adiabatic inside the sheath. This paper shows that classical fluid modeling assumptions need to be verified for each system under consideration, most particularly while modeling the transition from plasma to a wall. Cationized birch xylan was prepared and its use as a papermaking chemical was evaluated. The focus was on studying the effects of cationized birch xylan on the wet and dry strength of fine paper. The results of the laboratory experiments show that the addition of 3 percent of cationized birch xylan to birch kraft pulp improved the initial wet strength of the web by 30 percent compared to base stock at a solids content of 55%. Furthermore, the tensile stiffness of the wet web increased by approximately a third and the dry tensile strength improved by 26%, while the dry elastic modulus was not changed. The improvements in the strength properties were clear when compared to the base stock, but not as high as achieved with conventionally used cationized starch. Here, we report a highly water‐soluble colorimetric and fluorescent pH probe that works in the pH range 0.2–3.0. The probe showed a rapid response, high stability, and excellent reversibility to acidity. Moreover, the fluorescence of probe was not influenced by the existence of high concentration of cations. The pKa of probe was calculated to be 2.25 ± 0.06. Furthermore, the pH test papers coated with the probe exhibited a distinct color change in acidic conditions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Accumulation of interfacial space charge in oil-paper interface is a critical issue in insulation diagnostics of transformers. This interfacial charge mainly accumulates due to the conductivity difference of oil and paper. Accumulation of interfacial charge leads to localized field enhancement, which further leads to partial discharges and acceleration in the aging of insulation. Therefore, from the point of view of transformer insulation diagnostics, assessment of interfacial charge is very important. However, it is not easy to estimate interfacial space charge behavior from the transformer diagnostics methods currently in use. In case of Polarization-Depolarization Current (PDC) measurement, a well known method for transformer condition monitoring, the effect of interfacial charge is reflected in the non-linearity of current response during polarization and de-polarization. During de-polarization process, a part of the interfacial charge accumulated during polarization period is absorbed by the electrodes producing a current, which is difficult to separate using conventional linear dielectric theory. In this paper, an attempt has been made to separate this current component from de-polarization current through considering charge de-trapping mechanism. Terming this current component as de-trapping current, its relationship with other parameters of transformer insulation is discussed. The developed methodology has been applied on several practical transformers. High-power lasers are routinely used to generate energetic positively charged ions, and this paper reports on the observation of negative ions in these experiments. A large number of negative ions and neutral atoms at MeV energies was obtained from the interaction of a high intensity laser pulse with a water spray along with positive ions [Abicht et al., Appl. Phys. Lett. 103, 253501 (2013)]. Beams of negative ions and neutral atoms have the same properties as beams of positive ions. However, the mechanism of negative ion formation and acceleration is still under discussion. In order to gain more information about physics of generation negative ions and neutrals, we present a new experiment where all species, positive, negative ions, and neutrals, are spatially separated, and the electron capture and loss of each in water spray is evaluated. The formation of negative ions and neutral atoms of hydrogen and carbon with energies up to 140 keV and 1.2 MeV, respectively, is confirmed. Cation exchange is a versatile post-synthetic method to explore a wide range of nanoparticle compositions, phases, and morphologies. Recently, several studies have expanded the scope of cation exchange to magic-size clusters (MSCs). Mechanistic studies indicated that MSC cation exchange undergoes a two-stage reaction pathway instead of the continuous diffusion-controlled mechanism found in nanoparticle cation exchange reactions. The cation exchange intermediate, however, has not been well-identified despite it being the key to understanding the reaction mechanism. Only indirect evidence, such as exciton peak shifts and powder x-ray diffraction, has been used to indicate the formation of the cation exchange intermediate. In this paper, we investigate the unusual nature of cation exchange in nanoclusters using our previously reported CdS MSC. High-resolution mass spectra reveal two cation exchanged reaction intermediates [Ag2Cd32S33(L) and AgCd33S33(L), L: oleic acid] as well as the fully exchanged Ag2S cluster. Crystal and electronic structure characterizations also confirm the two-stage reaction mechanism. Additionally, we investigate the Cu/CdS MSC cation exchange reaction and find a similar two-stage reaction mechanism. Our study shows that the formation of dilutely exchanged intermediate clusters can be generally found in the first stage of the MSC cation exchange reaction. The non-stick properties of parchment papers are achieved by polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) coatings. During baking, PDMS can thus be extracted from the silicone-coated parchment into the baked goods. Positive-ion direct analysis in real time (DART) mass spectrometry (MS) is highly efficient for the analysis of PDMS. A DART-SVP source was coupled to a quadrupole-time-of-flightmass spectrometer to detect PDMS on the contact surface of baked goods after use of silicone-coated parchment papers. DART spectra from the bottom surface of baked cookies and pizzas exhibited signals because of PDMS ions of the general formula [(C2H6SiO)n + NH4]+ in the m/z 800-1900 range. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The use of non thermal plasma (NTP) to improve indoor air quality (IAQ) has grown considerably in recent years. This paper demonstrates the advantage of NTP for IAQ improvement in terms of particulate matter (PM) removal. The PM removal mechanism using active air ions and radicals has been investigated. From the developed dielectric barreir discharge (DBD) air plasma reactor, the total PM removal efficiency of 61.72% has been achieved at an optimised concentration of negative and positive air ions in 2 hours of continuous operation. Due to the utilised sensor's limit of quantification (LOQ), PM 2.5 and PM 10 have been reduced to a certain value. The objective of this study was to investigate the synthesis of zeolites from paper sludge ash, and to evaluate their applications for water purification to simultaneously remove NH4+ and PO43- in aqueous solution. Paper sludge ash had a low abundance of Si and a significant Ca content, due to the presence of calcite that was used as paper filler. Na2SiO3 was added to the NaOH solution to increase Si content in order to synthesize zeolites with high cation exchange capacity. The original ash without addition of Si yielded hydroxysodalite with a cation exchange capacity of ca. 50 cmol/kg. Addition of Si to the solution yielded Na-P1 (zeolite-P) with a higher cation exchange capacity (ca. 120 cmol/kg). The observed concentrations of Si and Al in the solution during the reaction explain crystallizations of these two phases. The product with Na-P1 could simultaneously remove NH4+ and PO43- from the solution between pH 4 and 9. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: This study examines and quantifies the effect of cationic polyacrylamide (CPAM) dissolution kinetics and charge density on the adsorption and aggregation state of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) on paper and the resulting Surface Enhanced Raman Scattering (SERS) performance. Dissolution kinetics of CPAM of different charge density was studied by monitoring their viscosity and hydrodynamic diameter over regular intervals of time. It was found that the degree of dissolution of CPAM greatly affected the surface coverage and aggregation of AuNPs on the CPAM pre-adsorbed paper substrate and their SERS reproducibility. CPAM of higher charge density dissolves faster and produced a more uniform aggregation and higher surface coverage of AuNPs on paper for a higher and more reproducible Raman EF. Understanding the CPAM dissolution process enables the optimization of SERS performance of the AuNPs-paper as a bio-diagnostic platform. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: This study examines and quantifies the effect of cationic polyelectrolyte adsorption on paper on the aggregation and retention of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) to optimize their Surface Enhanced Raman Scattering (SERS) enhancement factor and sensitivity. Aggregation of metallic nanoparticles is known as a key factor for intense SERS enhancement. Paper substrates were treated with aqueous solutions of cationic polyacrylamide (CPAM) varying in concentration, charge density, and molecular weight to control the AuNPs’ aggregate size distribution and surface coverage on paper. The Raman Enhancement Factor of AuNPs-CPAM paper was almost an order of magnitude greater than for the untreated AuNPs paper. The high loading and uniform distribution of AuNPs aggregates on CPAM pre-treated paper contributed toward the excellent SERS reproducibility, sensitivity, and high enhancement factor. This configuration of AuNP on paper was favoured by treating the substrate with CPAM solutions of higher concentrations, higher charge density, and greater molecular weight. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: The use of aluminium salts in papermaking has been linked well for over a century with causing degradation of paper. This is because the typical salts used in papermaking hydrolyse to release acid, which is a known catalyst that promotes degradation of cellulose, reducing both its degree of polymerisation and intrinsic strength. However, data reported here show that simplistic statements about the acidity of aluminium salts hide an interesting and complicated chemistry. In particular the presence of anions capable of coordinating with aluminium in solution is shown to exert an overwhelming influence on degradation reactions catalysed by the metal. Furthermore, the work highlights potential ways of pacifying aluminium cations contained in paper, effectively reducing or eliminating the degradation reactions they promote. Abstract: We report on the synthesis of cellulose paper bearing a cationic porphyrin, designed for antimicrobial applications. Tricationic porphyrin has been covalently grafted on paper, without previous chemical modification of the cellulosic support, using 1,3,5-triazine derivative as linker. The obtained porphyrin-grafted paper was characterized by infrared (ATR-FTIR), UV–visible and diffuse reflectance UV–vis (DRUV) spectroscopies to confirm the triazine linkage. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) was used to investigate thermal properties of grafted paper. Antimicrobial activity of porphyrin–cellulose material was tested under visible light irradiation against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. The two bacterial strains deposited on the resulting photosensitizing filter paper are efficiently killed after illumination. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

The Raman and infrared (IR) wavenumbers were computed for the Aurivillius structure ABi4Ti4O15 (ABT) (ACa, Sr, Ba) in an orthorhombic space group (A21am, No. 36, C122v) using normal coordinate analysis. This study aimed to investigate the impact of A‐site cations on vibrational phonons. The analysis of zone center phonons primarily involved numerous stretching and bending bonds, serving as force constants. These force constants were utilized to assign the calculated wavenumbers in the examined phase for the first time. The theoretical findings in this paper exhibited a favorable correlation with the wavenumbers reported in the literature. Comparisons of force constants, bond lengths, and wavenumbers were conducted to elucidate A‐site cation disordering in these intricate compounds. The outcomes indicated that, in the studied complexes, the Sr atom exhibited an ideal radius for fitting into the structure. The mass of the A‐site cations was identified as a factor contributing to tilts in the octahedra. An additional analysis was carried out to assess the impact of A‐cations on both the affected equatorial and axial bonds, providing a clearer understanding of the structure. Outer octahedra displayed greater sensitivity to A‐site cations compared with inner octahedra. A study of potential energy distribution was also conducted in this work to determine the significance of each force constant in all calculated wavenumbers. It was observed that higher wavenumbers were predominantly influenced by vibrations in oxygen atoms, while lower wavenumbers were mainly affected by A‐site cations. It is important to study the steel corrosion inhibition behavior in complex chloride salt environments. This paper uses the fact that calcined layered double hydroxides (CLDHs) have a certain memory effect, which means that it can reabsorb water and anions and partially restore the lamellar structure under certain conditions. This work investigated the influence of cation types on the steel corrosion inhibition behavior of CLDH in saturated calcium hydroxide solution using equilibrium isotherms of Cl− uptake, the electrochemical method, X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) techniques. The results show that the corrosion inhibition of the CLDH is affected by the cation types in the following order: Ca2+>Mg2+>K+≈Na+·Na+ and K+ increase the pH of the solution and decrease the corrosion inhibition of CLDH. The addition of Mg2+ can promote the reconstruction of Mg-Al-Zn-Cl hydrotalcite. The addition of Ca2+ can promote the formation of new Ca-Al layered double hydroxide (Ca-Al-LDH) and improve the corrosion inhibition. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Owing to its high natural abundance compared to the commonly used transition (precious) metals, as well as its high Lewis acidity and ability to change oxidation state, aluminium has recently been explored as the basis for a range of single‐site catalysts. This paper aims to establish the ground rules for the development of a new type of cationic alkene oligomerisation catalyst containing two Al(III) ions, with the potential to act co‐operatively in stereoselective assembly. Five new dimers of the type [R2Al(2‐py′)]2 (R=Me, iBu; py′=substituted pyridyl group) with different substituents on the Al atoms and pyridyl rings have been synthesised. The formation of the undesired cis isomers can be suppressed by the presence of substituents on the 6‐position of the pyridyl ring due to steric congestion, with DFT calculations showing that the selection of the trans isomer is thermodynamically controlled. Calculations show that demethylation of the dimers [Me2Al(2‐py′)]2 with Ph3C+ to the cations [{MeAl(2‐py')}2(μ‐Me)]+ is highly favourable and that the desired trans disposition of the 2‐pyridyl ring units is influenced by steric effects. Preliminary experimental studies confirm that demethylation of [Me2Al(6‐MeO‐2‐py)]2 can be achieved using [Ph3C][B(C6F5)4]. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A new approach for the chemical modification of the surface of paper based on the application of colloidal mixtures containing cationic starch and polyoxometalates on uncoated base paper is presented. Polyoxometalates with the Keggin-type structure and physical properties similar to those presented by coating pigments, namely H3PW12O40∙23H2O, H4SiW12O40∙24H2O, and K7PW11O39∙9H2O, have been used in order to improve the quality of inkjet printing. The analysis of the different samples by FTIRATR spectroscopy showed the presence of the polyoxometalates (and the cationic starch) on the top surface of the paper. In addition, the determination of surface energy parameters, namely the polar component (σsp) and the dispersive component (σsd) of the surface energy, by contact angle measurements revealed that, for the new samples, the polar component level was much higher than that of the uncoated base paper. Abstract: Large numbers of soil samples are routinely analyzed using methylene blue (MB) titration to determine clay content. Although, the MB filter paper spot test titration is simple, it is labor-intensive, subjective, and leaves no record for subsequent re-examination. Preliminary thermometric monitoring of the titration indicated a switch from endothermic to exothermic reaction during titration. We examined this nearly universal property of physicochemical processes as a potential replacement method to automate the MB clay titration, making use of literature data. We translated the isothermal enthalipmetric titration of montmorillonite using MB by Rytwo and Ruiz-Hitzky to an adiabatic thermometric titration (2003). The plot of temperature versus titrant volume gave two intersecting linear segments dependent on the titrated percentage of the clay''s cation exchange capacity (CEC). The MB filter paper spot test endpoint reflects the first excess MB that persists in the solid suspension, which also happens to be a function of the clay''s CEC. The spot test endpoint is correlated to the thermometric indicator point and, for montmorillonite, the two are related by an exact factor of two. Although this factor will naturally be dependent on the clay minerals in the samples, the analyses show that the thermometric indicator titration method is a viable replacement for the spot test. In this work, the effects of various high molecular weight cationic poly(vinyl alcohols), CPVAs, on the fiber morphology and the properties of papers made from fractionated refined fibers were investigated. At first, bleached sulfite fibers were refined under various revolutions and then refined fibers were fractionated under various time intervals to obtain refined fibers with a similar fiber length and fines content. Then, 20 mg/g CPVAs with various charge densities was adsorbed on the fractionated refined fibers prior to making hand sheets. The results showed that the lower the charge density of CPVA, the higher the effectiveness of CPVA in improving the paper strength at any refining revolution. The reasons for such a phenomenon were perhaps the different configurations of CPVAs on the surface of the fibers and the different adhesion/repulsion forces developed between CPVA-modified fibers in hand sheets. Also, by reducing the freeness of the fractionated fibers (increasing the refining revolutions), the effect of CPVA in improving the paper strength was reduced. In this case, the CPVAs tended to cover the fibrils on the fiber surface, which was demonstrated by SEM observations, thus reducing the contact area of the fractionated refined fibers. DFT calculations with full geometry optimization have been performed on the series (CpM)2(as-indacene) and (CpM)2(s-indacene) (M = Mn, Fe, Co, Ni), as well as on the cations of the Fe, Co and Ni complexes. The compounds where M = Fe and Ni (as-indacene series) and M = Mn, Fe and Co (s-indacene series) were found to possess closed-shell ground states. In the mixed-valent cations as well as in the other open-shell species, the degree of metal–metal communication and the participation of the ligand into the spin density were evaluated. The results of applying heterogeneous chemiluminescent analysis for determination of micro-components are generalized, and the possibility of using this method for determination of toxic anions in waters is demonstrated. Anions undergo conversion beforehand, which causes formation of new analytical forms, i.e., derivates being active in chemiluminescent reactions with luminol. If volatile products are generated as analytical forms, they undergo gas extraction from the matrix with detection using a chemiluminescent indicator in the carrier gas stream at the interface gas-liquid (aqueous solution of luminol). Thus, the techniques for determination of Cl, Br, I, ClO, BrO, IO, NO, NO, S, CrO, AsO, Cl and chloramines are developed. The detection limit (DL) is 0.5-5.0 μg/l, and the analysis time is 2-9 min. In another case, products of conversion are sorbed from the solution on a solid sorbent, and detection is carried out by a luminol solution on the solid surface. A series of heteropoly acids (phosphorus, arsenic, silicon, and germanium) and their ion associates with cation surfactants, along with other large anions, are determined in the form of sorbable ion associates. The DL is 0.02-0.7 μg/l, and the analysis time is 30 min. The advantages of application of heterogeneous chemiluminescent analysis over analysis in homogeneous media are indicated, and the prospects for development of the theoretical bases and field of application are demonstrated. Photoisomerization of a coordinating, photochromic dithienylethene bearing a pyridine and a methylpyridinium group was investigated as a means to reversibly modulate the luminescence from CdSe–ZnS core–shell quantum dots. Resonance energy transfer and electron transfer are both plausible quenching mechanisms based on an increase in the spectral donor–acceptor overlap and an anodic shift in the reduction potential accompanying the isomerization reaction of the dithienylethene photoswitch. Photochemical degradation of both the quantum dot and photochromic quencher was observed after repeated cycling between the two isomers, suggesting irreversible electron transfer from the quantum dot to the dithienylethene as the dominant luminescence quenching mechanism. The photochromic, thermochromic and metallochromic behaviour of a series of three spiro[indoline-8-(benzothiazol-2-yl)-benzopyrans] has been investigated. The thermodynamic and kinetic parameters of their thermal equilibrium between the ring-closed (spiro) and ring-opened (merocyanine) isomeric forms have been determined using UV-Vis absorption and 1H NMR spectroscopies. By adding Co(ii) and Ni(ii) ions in acetonitrile solution, 1 : 1 and 1 : 2 metal : merocyanine complexes are formed simultaneously. Using appropriate numerical methods, the kinetic analysis of the complexation allowed us to determine accurately key thermodynamic and spectroscopic parameters of the metal complexes. Results showed that the complexation strength is very sensitive to the size of the indoline nitrogen substituent. Complexation can be reversed by shining white light on the coloured complexes which regenerates the inactive spiropyran form, and releases the metallic ion; hence, these systems display fully reversible negative photochromism. The Zn(ii) complexes exhibit intense fluorescence in the 600–800 nm wavelength range. All these behaviours make these spiropyrans bearing benzothiazole heterocycles promising building blocks for the future construction of photodynamic chemosensors for transition metal ions. A series of task-specific ionic liquids (TSILs) based on glycerylimidazolium cations have been prepared by reaction of 1-chloropropanediol, a compound obtainable from glycerol (a widely available and in-expensive waste product), with the appropriate base (1-H-imidazole, 1,2-dimethylimidazole and 1-methyl-1-H-imidazole). The reaction of 3-(1H-imidazol-1-yl)propane-1,2-diol with chloroalkanes, bromoalkanes and alkyl mesylates gave the corresponding salts which were characterized. We present a comprehensive method for proteome analysis that integrates both intact protein separation and proteolytic fragment characterization mass spectrometric approaches. Strong cation exchange chromatography (SCX) was used as the first separation dimension and capillary reversed-phase liquid chromatography (cRPLC) was integrated as the second separation dimension. Fractions from SCX were collected offline and loaded onto cRPLC. Effluents from cRPLC were directly deposited onto the MALDI target plates and further digested by using a rapid on-probe tryptic digestion technique. This approach minimizes the amount of time and extensive labor required for traditional in-solution digestion followed by exhaustive sample cleanup and transfer. MALDI-TOF/TOF was used for subsequent analyses. The sensitivity of on-target digestion is showed by analyzing 0.07 ng of myoglobin, 0.07 ng of cytochrome c and 0.7 ng BSA. The high efficiency of the overall system was demonstrated by the analysis of intact proteins extracted from normal human liver tissue. Phosphates, whose obvious disadvantage is the relatively small birefringence, can be overcome by the introduction of post-transition metal cations containing stereochemically active lone-pair electrons. In this paper, two new compounds were successfully explored in the A–Sb–P–O system, i.e. Cs2Sb3O(PO4)3 (CsSbPO) and (NH4)2Sb4O2(H2O)(PO4)2[PO3(OH)]2 (NH4SbPOH). Transmission spectra show that CsSbPO has a surprising transmission range with a UV cutoff edge of 213 nm. First-principles calculations show that both compounds have a wide band gap (5.02 eV for CsSbPO and 5.30 eV for NH4SbPOH) and enlarged birefringence (Δn = 0.034@1064 nm for CsSbPO and Δn = 0.045@1064 nm for NH4SbPOH). The results of real-space atom-cutting investigations show that the distorted [SbOx] polyhedra originating from the asymmetric lone pair electrons give the main contribution to the total birefringence and overcome the disadvantage of small birefringence of phosphates but maintain wide transition windows. White light solid-state lighting applications still face significant challenges due to insufficient efficient and stable red light emitting materials. Therefore, a series of orange-red fluorescent materials, CaLu 2-x Mg 2 Si 3 O 12 :xCe3+ (CLMS:xCe3+; x = 0.02, 0.04, 0.06, 0.08, 0.10, 0.12) were prepared in this paper. Luminescence spectra testing revealed that the optimal concentration of Ce3+ ions in the crystal lattice is x = 0.04. At 460 nm excitation, the emission wavelength is approximately 592 nm. To enhance the thermal stability and luminescence performance of CLMS:Ce3+, the CaLu 1.96-y Me y Mg 2 Si 3 O 12 :0.04Ce3+ (Me = Sr, Ba; y = 0, 0.02, 0.05, 0.10, 0.15, 0.20) fluorescent materials were successfully prepared. It was found that phosphor's fluorescence intensity was enhanced after the introduction of Sr2+ or Ba2+ ions. Meanwhile, the phosphors were tested for thermal stability, and the emission intensities of CLMS:0.04Ce3+, CLMS:0.04Ce3+,0.10Sr2+, and CLMS:0.04Ce3+,0.05Ba2+ phosphors decreased to 77.60%, 85.53%, and 87.63% at 423 K, respectively. In the past 20 years, perovskite-related research has attracted wide attention. The related research into two-dimensional/quasi-two-dimensional perovskite has propelled the research of perovskite materials to a new height. To improve the properties of quasi-2D perovskite, improve the stability of materials, and achieve specific functions, using different types, volumes, and lengths of organic spacers is an essential method. In this paper, quasi-2D perovskites with EDA (ethylene diammonium), PDA (1,3-propanediammonium), and BDA (1,4-butanediammonium) (m = 2–4) as organic spacers were prepared, and the effects of different organic spacers on the 2D perovskite were investigated. The results show that the length of the organic spacer significantly impacts the perovskite's properties. A shorter organic spacer can effectively reduce the quantum confinement and dielectric confinement in perovskite. This paper comprehensively investigates the oblique propagation of ion-acoustic solitary waves (IASWs) with arbitrary amplitude in a magnetoplasma consisting of inertialess non-Maxwellian (nonthermal) electrons, inertialess Maxwellian positrons, and inertial adiabatically heated ions. It is postulated that the positive ions demonstrate adiabatic behavior that is distinguished by anisotropic thermal pressure. The study utilizes Sagdeev's pseudopotential theory to analyze the fluid equations of the plasma model and reduce them to the energy equation. Different plasma configuration factors, such as nonthermal parameters, positron concentration, and parallel and perpendicular ion pressure, are being studied to see how they affect the properties of solitary waves with large amplitudes. The findings demonstrate the simultaneous coexistence of compressive and rarefactive IASWs, significantly influenced by positrons and nonthermal electron parameters. Recently, polymer inclusion membranes (PIMs) have surfaced as a viable solution for selective transport and metallic ions separation. The efficiency of such membranes is subject to a number of factors, including the preparation method and relevant physico-chemical characteristics. In this paper, an improvement of a novel category of PIMs for performing ions separation is reported. The membranes were prepared using a mixture of two polymers: cellulose triacetate (CTA) and poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA), three different carriers, Aliquat 336 (basic), di-(2-ethylhexyl) phosphoric acid (D2EHPA) (acid) and tributyl phosphate (TBP) (neutral) and plasticized by dioctyle phthalate (DOP). All synthesized membranes were characterized using Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). A study of the transport of Co(II), Cu(II), Ni(II) and Pb(II) species using the synthesized membranes was conducted. 1-octadecanol is known to be a highly effective agglomerating agent for laser toner ink. However, the office waste paper used in the actual production often contains various types of inks. The effect of the offset ink and types of surfactants with different charge characteristics were studied relative to the agglomeration of the laser toner ink under neutral pulping conditions. It was found that the addition of a small amount of the offset ink printed waste paper was beneficial for the agglomeration of the laser toner ink. The optimal percentage of addition is 12.5% to 25%. The offset printed ink had a positive charge of 0.001±0.0005 mEq/g when the offset ink was treated by 70°C water at neutral conditions. Addition of a proper amount of cationic surfactant was beneficial to improve the agglomeration at any ratio of the mixed laser printed and offset waste papers. When the percentage of offset waste paper was less than 50%, the addition of anionic surfactant and nonionic surfactant was harmful for agglomeration, and there was no significant effect at higher offset content. Accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) measurements of 10Be almost invariably utilize the BeO- molecular negative ion. Molecular ions experience the process of 'Coulomb explosion' when dissociated by a stripper in the high-voltage terminal of a tandem accelerator, resulting in energy and angular spread of the subsequently-accelerated positive ions. In this paper, the phenomenon is studied in detail for both foil and gas stripping of BeO, using the 14UD pelletron accelerator at the Australian National University operating at 8.5 MV. In this work, we have reviewed non-covalent interactions in technetium hexahalide compounds and obtained eight new compounds of the CatnTcHal6 type, where Cat = dimethylammonium, tetramethylammonium, caffeinium, benzothiazolium, nicotinamidium, and pyrazolium, and Hal = Cl, Br. SCXRD studies were carried out for new compounds. In some compounds, halide anions and/or crystallization water were present. In the compounds obtained, an essential influence on the formation of structures and crystal packing is exerted by the molecules of crystallization water and halide ions. Diethylammonium and nicotinamidium compounds, whose structures do not contain other ions and contain sufficiently strong non-covalent interactions, best bind hexahalotechnetates. π-Stacking interactions, anion–π interactions, and halogen bonds were found in the structures. The percentage contribution of the H⋯Hal/Hal⋯H interactions in the transition from fluorine to bromine in TcHal62− anions decreases, while the contribution of interactions of other types increases. The greatest variety of interactions in anions is observed for compounds of caffeinium and nicotinamidium with TcBr62−. The paper considers the processes of thermolysis of some new and previously known CatnTcHal6 compounds with various cations. It is shown that the thermal stability of the compounds is only due to the properties of the organic cation and does not depend on the nature of the halogen. The simplest way to produce high density hydrogen plasmas is to form an arc between the arcing electrode and the plasma chamber (cathode). For arc-based hydrogen plasma generation, a pulsed power supply that delivers 2 ms-long constant current pulse has been developed. This pulsed power supply employs a high frequency buck converter topology with a nonlinear filter inductor. This paper describes the development and testing of a constant current pulsed power supply that operates at 50 A and 550 V with a pulse width of 2 ms and a pulse repetition rate of 2 Hz. By changing the arc current, the arc impedance and the positive hydrogen ion current were also measured. The extraction of positive hydrogen ions was carried out using a three-electrode extraction design, which results in a current of 80 mA of positive hydrogen ions at an energy of 50 keV. The Cairns-distributed electrons and positive ions in a plasma made up of a negative dust fluid are taken into account to examine the presence of arbitrary amplitude dust-acoustic solitons. It has previously been noted that nonthermal ions and thermal electrons generate both compressive and rarefactive solitons. In this paper, we noticed that nonthermal electrons together with nonthermal ions are responsible for producing the rarefactive solitons. It is found that the Sagdeev potential strongly depends on plasma parameters, such as nonthermal index α and Mach number, which, in turn, influence the Sagdeev potential and solitons significantly. We also found that the critical match number and height of soliton increase with the nonthermal parameter α. We further note that the Sagdeev potential as a function of potential φ becomes more negative and the amplitude of the soliton also enhances as the value of Mach number rises. It is concluded that the model presented here based on nonthermal ions and electrons in a negative dust fluid provides a worthy interpretation for electrostatic solitons observed in space plasmas. Two-color (1 + 1′) zero-electron-kinetic-energy (ZEKE) and photoionization efficiency (PIE) spectra are reported via different levels in the S1 ← S0 ( A ̃ 1 A 2 ← X ̃ 1 A 1 ) one-photon transition of jet-cooled N-methylpyrrole. The laser radiation is produced using two dye lasers, one with an 1800 l/mm grating and one with 2400 l/mm. We report spectra where the excitation and ionization radiation are produced with both combinations of the dye lasers; these spectra differ markedly. This is attributed to Wood's anomalies with the 2400 l/mm grating: one aspect is a loss in light intensity over a range of wavelengths, attributed to a resonance anomaly. Another is the appearance of a "shadow" ZEKE spectrum and PIE curve at apparently higher ionization wavenumbers; under some conditions, a third ZEKE spectrum was observed—these latter observations arise from higher-order dispersion effects, likely caused by a Rayleigh anomaly. We comment on these observations and report more representative ZEKE and PIE spectra than those presented in a recent paper by our group [A. R. Davies, D. J. Kemp, and T. G. Wright, J. Chem. The outcomes of this work highlight the development and validation of a rapid and simple manifold for determination of exchangeable cations [calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), sodium (Na), and potassium (K)] and cation exchange capacity (CEC) in soil. First, the performance of the manifold was evaluated to determine the best conditions to use: filter assembly, volume and number of aliquots of extracting solution, and the use of vacuum. Second, the analytical performance was study from trueness and precision analysis. For that, soil samples with assigned values, an in house reference material and unknown soil samples, were used, comparing their results with those obtained using the classical extraction method (agitation, centrifugation, and filtration). The performance study showed that a filter system assembled with S&S Nº859 type filter paper, cotton, and plastic piece is better to the other studied options. Four aliquots of 10 mL extracting solution and a few seconds of vacuum between additions is recommended to achieve the best recovery. The extraction procedure proposed using the manifold demonstrated to be accurate, and so can effectively replace the classical method for the extraction of exchangeable cations and CEC in soils. Regarding simplicity, rapidity, and simultaneity, the manifold method could be the method of choice for extraction up to 24 samples. Moreover, the manifold method significantly reduces the laboratory supplies and instrument used in the extraction steps in the classical method, attaining better efficiency and reducing costs associated to this stage of the analysis. Hydrochromic materials, which change color in response to moisture, are highly sought‐after due to some unique applications such as moisture detection, humidity monitoring, anti‐counterfeiting, and sweat‐pore mapping. We herein report a new thioxanthene‐9‐ols/thioxanthylium cations hydrochromic system. The hydrochromic thioxanthylium cations can be generated/regenerated by exposing a chemically stable thioxanthene‐9‐ol to trifluoroacetic acid (TFA). The intensely colored thioxanthylium cations can be chemically reverted to the colorless thioxanthene‐9‐ol. Interestingly, the conversion between thioxanthene‐9‐ol and its cation species was found to be highly reversible in most cases (up to 50 activation‐deactivation cycles). The color and moisture‐sensitivity of thioxanthylium cations were also validated to be tunable via functionalization of the thioxanthene core with different aliphatic and aromatic groups at its 9 or 2,7‐positions. A selective colorimetric behavior of PMHBOA for the prompt detection of Cr(ΙΙΙ) and Co(ΙΙ) can be observed with naked eyes. The 1H, 13C{H} NMR, and infrared spectroscopy disclosed the ligand binding capability for selective metal ions, ascribed to a 1:1 complex formation with Cr(III) and Co(II) cations in isopropanol. The limit of detection (LOD) values were calculated as 580 and 850 nM for Cr(ΙΙΙ) and Co(ΙΙ), respectively, accompanied with suitable LOQs as 1.95 µM for Cr(III) and 2.85 µM for Co(II), respectively. Moreover, a TLC-based fabricated paper strip successfully applied PMHBOA as a chemosensor for synchronous visible detection of Cr(III) and Co(II) in their alcoholic solution.
